Henne remains the starter, but evaluation coming

Despite another three-interception game, Chad Henne remains the Dolphins starting quarterback -- for now.

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said Monday he is not considering benching Henne (again), this time for Tyler Thigpen. "No, I don’t think so right now," Sparano said.

But ...

Sparano admitted some re-evaluation will take place by the Dolphins at the quarterback position. Perhaps not now, but eventually? Absolutely. Like at the end of the season.

“Listen the guy’s a young player right now. He’s, I think, getting better at a lot of things. At the end of the year we’ll have to sit down and from our standpoint we have to evaluate the whole big picture, I mean, we really do but there’s obviously some areas there where Chad needs to continue to improve and he would tell you that. One of the areas is, is this, this turnover thing.

"We just cannot, nobody can; I mean I’m watching one of the best in the league the last couple weeks have some problems that way (Peyton Manning), so you just can’t overcome them in this league. The margin is, it’s just too hard to overcome those kind of turnovers and unfortunately what you see is the guy throwing the football doing it. We don’t see all the other factors around it and there are a lot of other factors that go into how the quarterback plays in general and, and I think what the outcome is. In other words the result of an interception or all and any of those things.

"I mean, we had two protections yesterday where for all intensive purposes we’ve blocked these protections 150 times during the course of the season and what occurred yesterday on those two protections should never occur in that particular protection but it did and he got hit as he was throwing and at the end of the day you don’t convert a third and four. That stops a drive and that kills you in some of those things. The quarterback kind of takes the blame for that and there’s a lot of people around him.

"I feel like we got to make sure that the people around him are getting better as well. That’s probably a long answer to a short question but I do think this guy’s getting better. We’re going to have to evaluate everything at the end of the year."

Seems like Henne will get at least this coming game to get out of the Cleveland hole he dug himself. If he wins, he continues. If he loses, well, he probably continues because benching him at that point would be moot. The Dolphins would be out of the playoffs for sure, rather than almost definitely out of the playoffs.

The only reason Sparano would have for benching him at that point is if the coach believes Thigpen has a better chance to win him some games and he feels the need to get himself some wins for his own job security.

It otherwise seems wise that Henne might just keep his job until the end of the season and gets those games to prove himself.

Either way, it seems the Dolphins will go quarterback shopping this offseason. They will either try to find backup help or a quarterback that can compete for the starting job. That, of course, will all depend on that evaluation of Henne that will come when 2010 is over.

Hard to get rid of that goat odour, right?

Henne is human, lay off. Yes he's making mistakes, but so is everyone else. Do we run out and cry for a new cornerback everytime one of our guys drops an easy interception? Did we go running for a new running back when Ricky and Ronnie were fumbling against Minnesota? Cmon folks, have faith in him. He didnt start at Michigan for 4 years for nothing. Im proud to say I'll be in the Meadowlands Sunday wearing my Henne jersey.

One thing you have to admire about Belichek, he is the master of the revenge game. When we embarassed him with the WC two years back, he destroyed us the following game that season. Same now with the Jets, they lost to them in NY and now they embarassed them on the rematch. He's a coach that makes a difference. Sparano is a coach celebrates 2nd and 9.

Everyone is banging on Henne for his poor game Sunday. Give him a little break. Clevlands defense should matbe get some of the credit for playing well. Remember this is the same defense that shut down the Pats, and Tom Brady a few weeks ago. The same offense that has many of you on your knees with your mouths open after last nights game. This happens with young qb's. 2 good games, a lousy one. I'm not saying that some of those mistakes couldn't have been avoided. But that Cleveland defense was to much for Henne, and we were over matched. But again, instead of taking the ball out of his hands. We abandoned the run, and put it on his shoulders to lose the game. Half of the time the Browns had 6-7 db's in the game. And we were still throwing into those coverages. WTF

Regarding the comments posted by Art:the problem is that "checkdown Chad"is,in fact, slinging "it".Unfortunately I am not referring to the football or touchdowns--use your imagination here.

I preferred Lepages.

Man, that was downright cruel. Rex won't forget. Bet on it.

10-2...............BEST RECORD IN THE NFL .........PATS

I like The air breathers chances this Sunday, I see the jets doing there typical blitzing garbage as they usually do but Chad(Neck fat)Henne has been good the last 2 games against the blitz(Tenn. and Oakland)The guy can hit a receiver(Assuming nobodys there to cover said receiver)Ergo blitzes.....

Danny Woodhead is a fckn Oompa Loompa... the difference is that on most teams, the skill players get a chance to see the field. Not here. It is the same 4-5 players that get the ball. Arguably the best 2 games this offense has played were against the Titans, and the Raiders. EVERY skill player got a chance to play in those games. EVERY skill player(with the exception of LEX) got a touvh in those games. There is a reason that we feel lile we have no depth. Our guys never see the field.

Wow DD, Posting about the Titans and the Raiders at the exact same time........

Henne just needs to play. This coaching staff makes things hard on him by shuffling him in and out of the game, paired with awful and predictable play calling. What QB wants to stand on the sidelines and watch two unproductive wildcat plays and then come in on 3rd & long??? He also doesn't get many opportunites to balance his INTs with TDs b/c he's often not on the field in the red zone until 3rd down. I have an idea! How about we play action pass on 1st down inside the 10 to give the kid a chance to succeed!!! I guess it makes more sense to run two garabage wildcat plays and have Henne try to force the ball on 3rd and goal against 8 DBs, doesn't it Mr. Henning? Get a new OC, let the kid play, and if we're having the same conversation next year (or 2012 given the lockout) then maybe we trade the house for the chance to draft a top qb.

Hey Henne is looking better so Sparano says, my wife is starting to look like Kim Kardashian too, we both smoking the same thing

The Jets are gonna be real mad come sunday. They probably will want to beat the hell out of our phins. We have to be ready for their emotion.

Boulder, The jets were shown that they were the frauds that we knew they were, but yeah, there gonna be POed....

I said it yesterday, and I will say it again today, and I will say it again tommrow if/when necessary....

We only have 1....1 more meaniful game...that is this Sunday @ 4:15 PM against the jets....This will be the last team to play all their starters all game long in an effort to win

So.....we have 1 game....1 GAME left to Evaluate Henne....as do the coaches.....1 game makes 24 meaniful stars for MR. Henne.....It will not be enough to decide weather he is the MAN or not....We will go into the off-season "handcuffed" (how ironic)....and can only hope that Henne blossoms into what so many here believe he can be next year....Hope you guys are right

WikiLeaks says Ireland & Sparano will be fired on Jan 3rd....more to come.

These sports writers need to add more direct questions. Ok, the players stats are getting better. Fine. I'm sure if you coached a team of crippled people their stats would improve too. Mr. Sparano, how much better do that stats need to get before we can win two games in a row?

Scott from Delaware is absolutley right. I live in the Philly region, too, and Kolb is no better than Henne. Henne is probably even better.
Not only does Philly have a better o-line, better wideouts, and a probowl, reliable running back, but they have a better offensive coordinator. And guess what. Kolb could not do anything. And you want him leading the poor man's Philadelphia Eagles down in South Beach? Please. Let's be realstic. This was the man who couldn't take Donnavon's job when, and he couldn't hold onto his own through 4 games into the season.

Bottom Line: If you want really want to look north at Philadelphia, you should only be looking at Michael Vick. Start praying.

I remember when people said we were set at QB this year with Pennington, Henne, and Thigpen. Also remember this one too: Who needs Michael Vick when we've got Pat White? LOL! Just one screw-up after another. Henne just doesn't have it, Folks! The Dolphins need to cut him loose immediately. Don't even wait for the end of the season. Just get rid of him NOW.

I know Henne is inconsistent week to week, but maybe a lot of it can be attributed to our offensive game planning, as opposed to him just being erratic.

Things work great one week, or certain players stand out....The next week our opponent shuts our prior success down and our offense almost looks lost.

Believe me, I know Henne is responsible for some bad decisions, but our OC doesn't seem able to put schemes out there that put pressure on an opposing defense.

They coach too safe, and all opposing defenses know this.

Anyone know the odds from Vegas about who will be going to the Super bowl???, My guess is New England for the AFC, but who do you guys seeing going for the NFC??? Atlanta??

Kolb couldn't keep his starting job in Philly, what makes anyone think he'd keep it here? Stupid.

That comment is STUPID. The 2nd coming of Jesus Christ Superstar TOOK that job. Kolb was playing very well to start the season and went down with an injury. Vick took over, won a couple games and then he went down with an injury. Kolb took back over and did well, but Vick got the nod. Have you watched the Eagles this season? How about that Mon. night record-setting performance by Vick. (Who I might add could have been added to the Dolphins very cheaply, but that brilliant front-office GM Ireland wouldn't even bring him in for a workout. He was too busy finishing up his rough draft of interview questions for Dez Bryant.)

2011 Draft Review:

Miami traded down its #1 and #3 for three #5 and two #6 in order to keep pace with the Pats who now have 17 picks (9 in the first round). Here are their selections:

Long Jake - LT/Pern star
Veal Carney - RT/Grill Cook
Larry Ledfoot - Returner/Cement Mixer
Whitey Patrick - WC Specialist/Ghost
Ham Hocker - DE/Pit Roaster

Cuban Manace,
I think Atl, or Philly in the NFC and either Pats, or Ravens in AFC, but can't count out Steelers. I know our team hasn't even been in this conversation since...since.., oh, hell, I can't remember when our team was even in the conversation. That's sad. I long for the days of the Orange Bowl, when we had a real home-field advantage.

Agree Hardcore, The Orange Bowl was a great venue no doubt, the fins havent been the same since they left, and neither has the "U"....shame really..

CM, I like the Giants in the NFC. I think they have a complete roster and the experience from a couple of years back - they also will get healthier by season's end.

But I put a disclaimer - I also liked San Diego from the AFC - until they crapped the bed against the Raiders at home on Sunday. If you think we are mad, the Charger faithful must be livid. They have an excellent team and will most likely miss the playoffs unless Kansas City blows a tire.

Wow the jets are favored 5.5 points this game. I guess vegas thinks we're getting blown out

I think the biggest thing was the seats were so close to the field vs. the football/baseball stadium we play in now where the seats are set way back. I went to the last game Mia played in the OB against the Pats. 1985 AFC Championship game and we got beat. Same yr. we beat the Bears on Mon. night keeping them from being undefeated.

Stillhardc...so you're saying kolb was playing good then went down then vick played good and went down then kolb took over and did so well that they gave it back to Vick. Uh huh. Yeah, right, got it, makes perfect sense. Try googling 'kolb benched' and you will find his own coach dissing his performance. We need to UPGRADE at QB, not move sideways or down.

Stop the talk about Kolb...he's NOT coming to Miami.
The real unanswered question is this:
Does Ross keep the Ireland/Sparano team in place?
If yes, then u can expect Henne to be competing for the QB job come training camp...
if Ross pulls the plug on the "Tuna Experiment" then all bets are off with Henne.

Mark Your right about the Charger Faithful,Norve Turner has been Under achieving his entire coaching career, I see his job on the line more then the fist pumper...

Norv can't win the big games...

CM, I think he's gone if they ose to KC b/c their season would be over anyway.

How great is the new Bronco coach's name? Studesville?

Welcome to Studesville, population ME! Hhaaha, he must have a million great lines he used in the bars over the years.

NH, Looks like Norve is now having a tough time winning period....

0x80: That explains why the Eagles gave him a huge 2 yr. contract extension early this year because he sucks. Kolb is light years ahead of what we have. Quit watching Google and watch the games, you might learn something.

NHFINSFAN: Exactly. If the dumbfecta is here next year (I think they will be),Henne will be also, but they will bring in a veteran free agent QB to compete. If Ross cans them, all bets are off.

Give them a chance to "cool off".

Dear Tony Sparano,
Please make the trade for Tim Tebow ASAP!

Don't want Corn on the Kolb with my team. Remember A.J. Feely. That's what I think of Kolb. we need to draft a Quarterback with somes skills and balls to come in and take the job from Henne. Henne moves to number 2. If you all are haveing trouble understanding Sparano I will interpret. "It's over for Henne after we evaluate the whole situation. Being the stat man I am, the stats don't lie. Henne is Turn-Over Prone". Sparano won't do anything now because it will further damage a problematic Quarterback situation. Henne stares receivers down and he is very inconsistent and inaccurate. He also coninues to throw to a player that is blanketed. I have watched NFL for years and Henne ain't the one. Let move on to the next QB contestant. NEXT!

Hardcore, The Fins are close, They have a good Defense, a bad Special team and a underachieving offense..,...On second thought, your right..

Shaggy earlier in this thread pointing out the records of would be hall of fame QB’s ought to provide some perspective. Man, so many people want to place this on Henne. I don’t see it.
JB, Utdolphan and others have pointed out the same thing I see in that Sparano coaches this kid into being scared to make a mistake. Then you have the inept game plan of Henning. Plus add in how totally inconsistent the O-line has been and how can you evaluate Henne?
The answer is you really can’t. He is a young QB with a choke artist HC, totally incompetent OC, and a mediocre 150 Million $ O-line.
Ill add that Ireland didn’t do him any favors by failing to acquire a speed WR.
Like JB pointed out, there are no other better options. And spare me the Kolb talk, just like the Philly area fans have mentioned he had a better team across the board and did nothing. He is no better than Henne.

Oliver, Have you been hang out with Aloco???????

stillhard, contracts mean nothing. McNabb was recently benched and they still gave him a 5 year contract, with lots of easy outs for them to exit early if they want to dump him. I've been watching the games, watching Kolb warm the bench. If he isn't good enough for another team to keep (if they were to give him up), we certainly don't need him.

Norv Turner is 10 times the coach Sparano is.
Turner lost his first game in December since 2005 this weekend and has repeatedly fielded playoff teams. Sparano has done nothing.
Oh sorry Sparano put together a miracle season against a extremely weak schedule.

Sparano is on a much hotter seat than Turner.

Did someone here really ask for Tim Tebow?!
Give me a break that is just silly.

I'd KILL for Norv Turner. You think our offense would be this bad with Norv? You think Ricky would only have 1-100yd rushing day with Norv? Go back and watch the past 10 years in football, and many of the dominant offenses were thanks to Norv Turner.

Back to Henne. For all of you feeling better than Sanchez tanked last night, comparing him and Henne. Remember, Sanchez was facing the 9-2, division-leading Patriots. We were facing the lousy, last-place, 1-player defense Browns. There IS no comparison. Other than winning the remaining games in historic fashion, for this dolfan, there's nothing Henne can do to erase the memory of Sunday. As good as the defense played, as terrible as Cleveland was, I really have no excuse for Henne's performance. You all can talk about him "growing up" all you like, you can talk about Henning's vanilla offense, but that game was one of sheer, utter incompetence on the part of the QB, Chad Henne.

He has a steep mountain to climb to get back in my good graces.

does not matter who we put behind this oline. the reason we dont run withe 7 dbs on the field is we CANT the wild cat is not to get the best players on the field it is to get more blockers we suck in base formation

I'd like to see Mike Martz as OC, I like Norv though as an OC. I'd like to get Jeff Fischer as HC, no way Gruden or Cowher, don't understand the monkey love for those two.

DC, Norve was once the Offensive Crdinator for the fins when they had Dan(God of all QBs)Marino, He's a good coach, but cant get past the 1st round of playoffs........

DC is absolutely right Norv would be a huge improvement over Sparano.

Norv understands how to bring a modern passing offense. Sparano does not.

Dc Sanchez sucked against the browns also
