If you were expecting offensive coordinator Dan Henning to come into his final press conference of the 2010 season and announce his retirement to much pomp and circumstance, you are disappointed. There was no pomp. No circumstance. No announcement on Thursday.
As expected, the man who often says he only need answer to his supervisor Tony Sparano, isn't sharing anything with the media or fans.
"I'm coaching a game here, men," Henning said when asked if he is retiring. "I'm not thinking about nothing but coaching this game in New England ..."
Henning was in defend mode today. He defended Chad Henning, comparing him to Steve Young, Jim Plunkett and Phil Simms, saying they didn't hit their stride years and years into their careers. And he kind of defended himself, too when addressing the issue of scapegoats.
"It's easy to find scapegoats. It's not easy to find solutions. When you determine this guy is it and you take him out of the mix and find out it wasn't him, you find out you're wrong. So you better do the due diligence. You better dig. You better find out why you think its wrong. Why did this change. Why did the chemistry change. Are we doing the right things here, there and everywhere. That's the easy part to pinpoint someone out and take him out of the mix.
"If I am the problem, Dan Henning. If I'm the problem and you take me out of the mix and it works great after I'm gone with the same operation, hey, I'd love to be able to say, 'Take me outta here.' I don't believe that. I don't believe it's any other one individual on the offense that has caused the offense to settle down and not be as good as it has been in the past."
Correct, it's a bunch of individuals. Henning is not alone. But he has responsibility to bear for the problems, too. So does Chad Henne. So does the offensive line. So does Ronnie Brown. So does quarterback coach David Lee. So does Tony Sparano.
You don't get to be 29th in the NFL in points scored by having just one person struggle.

Will the Dolphins please hire Marvin Purvis to catch this John Dillenger and end this crime spree
Yahhh seee
Soiled :)

Who cares. What bothers me is that someone could read that post and then come in here and say "unbelievable" as if Henning was supposed to announce his retirement before the last game of the season. You know guys, Armando isn't trying to make you feel one way or the other on this and just because he has an opinion , that wasn't even stated, doesn't mean you have to follow that like sheep. Maybe try to think for yourself once and a while? Henning not announcing his retirement is no where near "unbelievable" but seems to fit more in the category of, 'yeah, no s**t what did you expect'.

Cya Dan.
Thanks for the NE Wildcat beat down a few years ago.
The Fins will manage... Cheers!

Well I hope they figure out the offense as well as they did the defense last year. For OC I'm beginning to like the idea of Mcdaniels. He can go after belicheat with his own type of offense.
I also wouldn't mind brad childress. I doubt kubiak comes here even if he's fired. Denver will grab him
Posted by: BoulderFinFan | December 30, 2010 at 02:12 PM
Jeff good point.. At this point it makes no difference. I mean I would pour free shots of Patron at the bar for any interested. But besides the Hangover, and loss of personal revenue nothing would change. Now in a week if Henning announces he is off to pasture. Great. We can move forward, and try and right this ship. If months go by and Henning is around for OTA's and other team functions. Then we can start the great freakout.

"It's easy to find scapegoats. It's not easy to find solutions," Henning warned.
This is what he says? It's easy to find scapegoats?!
Yeah Dan we know, you've been using a young QB as one for an entire season.
I'm not a big Henne supporter anymore, he has to prove he can get better before I jump back on that bus and it doesn't seem likely.
But I can't stand the fact that a 60 something year old man has no problem throwing a kid (Henne) under the bus all year while taking absolutely ZERO blame for the offensive woes this team has faced all season. It's easy to find a scapegoat as he knows all too well, he needed to look no further than his starting QB.
But consider this, Pennington, Henning and Sparanos "guy", went 11-5 against the easiest schedule in the league. Would he have done it again with this schedule and Henning calling the same plays? I think not. So his record would more closely resemble Hennes IMO andthen who would Henning have to blame? NO ACCOUNTABILITY FIRE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting, Football's Future web site lists Kyle Orton as a free agent after this season. Can anyone confirm or deny this? He surely won't be franchised - he should be signed if available.

THEY HAVE TO GET A GOOD PLAYER AND GOOD COACHS. THE GOOD TEAM HAS GOOD PLAYER AND GOOD COACHS!!

OMG!!! This guy is a narcissist. How can he not see he is at least part of the problem? This team plays uninspired football week in and week out. I like Tony but I just don't think he is in charge of anything. I think Tuna and Dan are in charge. Tony is just along for the ride.

KYLE ORTON SIGNED FOR 2011.DENVER MOVED HIM 3 DAYS AGO BACK TO NO 3 QB AFTER TEBOW AND BRADY QUINN ,THE REASON BEING HIS INJURED RIBS AND THE BRONCOS DON'T LIKE TO RISK ORTON AT THE END OF THE SEASON .

THE FAKE ALoco is on joe ,please forgive him
Posted by: ALoco | December 30, 2010 at 02:42 PM
Oh, he is signed? I know there's a bunch of players who are kind of trapped until this CBA thing is resolved. Ronnie Brown is one of them. Either way, I don't think the Dolphins want him back.

Posted by: #1 Dolphin Fan in Montreal | December 30, 2010 at 02:52 PM
I will defend Henning SLIGHTLY. His recent offenses have always been based on 2 TE's.
Fasano/Martin or Haynos.
Becht & Baker.
Witten & Fasano.
This year we have Fasano & every practice squad TE in the NFL. For his offense to even have a chance of success, it must have 2 TE's. Morono & Ireland have not come through. With that said, Henning & his dementia definately need to go.

All those asking for McDaniels, do you guys not understand that there is a big issue between him and Mike Nolen?
If you don't mind losing Nolen then yeah pray for McDaniels, but there is not enough room in Joe Robbie Stadium or even in Miami, Florida to contain both Josh McDaniels and Mike Nolen so pick your poison.
I can guarantee that if McDaniels steps foot on Dolphin turf Nolen leaves, plain and simple!
I don't understand how so many people can just blindly say let's get this guy or that guy without figuring out the consequences. Sure in a perfect world there would be no conflict of interests and my son wouldn't have to go off to Afghanistan to fight a war!
This ain't Alice in Wonderland folks. Figure it out before you spew.

Mtl, there are plenty of off options in free agency right now but not surprisingly with 10 teams unsettled at QB - not many at that position.
The Dolphins will NEED to spend big in free agency again this year. Here's a name we haven't mentioned in a while - Randy Moss? His value has never been lower. He still can fly and catch and it's clear Tenn only grabbed him so NE wouldn't get him back and make the league look like clowns again.
I also like the speedster from Houston for special teams - Jacoby Jones.
