Miami future cloudy for Brown, Williams

It is clear the Dolphins have no intention of signing either Ronnie Brown or Ricky Williams to contract extensions before the end of the season. That's interesting because both are scheduled to be free agents for 2011 (assuming there's a season) and neither are absolutely certain of being back with the team for varying reasons.

Both Williams and Brown have addressed the issue to some extent this week. Ronnie Brown was on my radio show, Armando and the Amigo this week, and his words clearly suggested he'd like to be in South Florida, but ...

"It's really out of my control," Brown said. "I want to be here, I love playing for the Dolphins, but that's kind of out of my hands."

The Dolphins and Brown are not currently negotiating a new deal, at least not with any sort of consistency. The Dolphins also haven't slipped Ricky Williams a post-it note with contract extension numbers -- something Bill Parcells did with Williams the last couple of times he offered Williams an extension.

(Obviously, Parcells is gone but I wonder if general manager Jeff Ireland picks up the practice from his mentor.)

Williams, enigmatic and unpredictable, speaks with the local media only rarely for reasons known only to himself. But he addressed his future, sort of, with the New York media on a conference call Wednesday.

"I have no idea," Williams said when asked if he sees himself in Miami next year. "I mean, I'll be a free agent after this year ... after this year it's kind of wait and see. You know if someone wants me and they can convince to do this one more year, I definitely would be open to the opportunity. But if not, I'm happy with what I've been able to accomplish in my career."

It seems to me one or the other, but not both Williams and Brown will return to the Dolphins next year.

Fact is it would be cheaper for the Dolphins to draft a running back and replace one of the two veterans, then depend on one of the two along with rookie during the coming season. Of course, Miami could blow both Brown and Williams out and go with a rookie and Lex Hilliard and someone else in the backfield.

Fact is Brown is likely to get some offers in free agency if he gets to that start of the open market because while he has not put up elite statistics with the Dolphins, he has been solid and could be better behind a better offensive line.

And maybe the Dolphins simply need to change things up a bit with their running back dynamic. I know the Dolphins like Williams and Brown together but neither of them is a break-away back. The Dolphins could definitely use a back that adds more speed to the backfield because the current duo isn't going to pop a 70-yard run to stun a defense very often.

That, by the way, is just my opinion. The Dolphins, plodding and even a bit slow on offense, seem to think Williams, for example, is quite fast, thank you.

"[He] still shows me that he’s got good top end and good burst and runs the ball hard, physical,” coach Tony Sparano said Wednesday.

Stephen Ross better fire tony sparano, chad henne, ronnie brown, ricky williams, and dan henning by the end of the year or like his team hell be considered a total joke we are not contenders and wouldnt even make it in the ladies football league cause the dolpgins are all soft just like the coaches and management

Is time to see Lex Hilliard and what he can do, or draft another RB in the mid round,I would much see them draft a QB with the 1st pick. The Patriots got really lucky with Brady, the Fooball God has been good to the Patriots,I would not consider that a steal, is more of a highway robbery.

I have to admitt, I want to keep Ricky, I love Ronnie, and his patience as a runner, but is time for new.
If we are rebuilding, then lets do just that, and a stated by Wang Chung, I have a hard time arguing those facts.
Lets face it, if the F.O. put in as much as us fans do, then my friends, a Team we would have.

Ronnie needs to go but I could see Williams one more year. Even though our O line is terrible (with the exception of Long), Ronnie doesnt look the same since his injury and Ricky doesnt have breakaway speed. We need to draft more speed on BOTH sides of the ball, Im tired of giving up big plays and never getting any. Slow powerful football teams cant compete with the speed teams of today.

Great plan.

We could go into the off season with a top 5 defense.

Then all we would need is a head coach an offensive coordinator, a starting quarterback, a backup quarterback, and a star running back or two.

Not to mention the center, guard, tackle, tight end and speed receiver we already need.

Oh yeah, don't forget the inside linebacker we need too replace Crowder.

But hey, why not, we still got most of our draft picks.

I agree that Ronnie hasn't looked the same this year. He seems more hesitant. I notice Ricky hits the holes hard and should have been given more opportunities.

As sad as i'd be to see the dismantling of the R&R express, I think Ronnie Brown will probably not be around next year. I hope we keep Ricky for another year - he still has good burst and he can play mentor for a year to another young RB, perhaps a rookie.

Guaranteed, we let Ronnie go and belicheck will pick him up in a heartbeat, same thing goes for Cobbs. I am rally surprised Cobbs hasnt been used more in the passing game.

IF anything this year has not been fair to either back, I understand wanting a fresh back in the game, but WTH happened to giving it to the hot back?

Build a line and half our problem is solved we need two consistent linemen.

Did Ricky not wanna go on Armando and the Amigo ?

Draft Cam Newton, that's all folksssssss.

Lex Hilliard will not be a good starting RB. I hope they're not planning on that.

Any kind of violent action taken against anybody in response to something written in Internet will result in the end of Humanity as we now know it.

Let's ask Home what he thinks we should do.

I gaze down at the dirty floor and think of my fellow gorillas.

Here we are. Another day. We rise with the sun, scratch each other, and forage for food.

No hunting. We're vegetarians. Nothing aside from the occassional bug needs to be killed to produce our massive size and strength.

Why did the humans have to resemble those violent and morally bankrupt chimpanzees, anyway?

Ronnie would be used right if He went to New England and they would run him 20-25 times per game....

Ronnie should look at this video because i havent seen him run that hard all season

Why do you always forget about Cobbs, Mando?? Draft RB. You still have Cobbs (who filled in nicely when Williams & Brown were injured) Hilliard & Kory Sheets. I'm sure some late 20-something RB will be available in FA or after 1st cuts to fill a void if necessary.

The dolphins would be dumb not to bring back brown

I'd like to see Brown resigned. Why doesn't his agent contact them? Because these agents are telling them to holdout. They are s@#%house lawyers chasing ambulances. How bout Brown saying "lets deal" maybe 3mil a year. But that is kinda hard to live on these days,"how will I pay my bills?" whoa is me!! I need 8mil. Thats why this league is the way it is. You cant buy a $150 jersey with a players name on it, cuz he ain't staying long. It needs to stop but actually getting worse. Some guys getting 50 mil. c'mon!!!

a decent oline would make our backs look good. imagine what bellichek/brady could do with our offensive personell. we really have an old school coach;it just doesnt work in todays nfl. the nfl is a qb driven league with quick strike capabilities.

I like Hilliard bette than Cobbs....but my plan would be to draft 2 running back....or draft 1 and bring in the other via FA....we need some speed

Is Sparano ever going to stop wearing the fat lady caftans a la Laine Kazan? And, for Goodness' sake....English communication classes, please. Who can read or understand his interviews??? Not even the reporters or transcribers. Shame.

We should have got Traded Ronnie last offseason, we could have rode Hilliard and RW this season then acquired a RB in this year's draft, now Ronnie will likely leave for free straight into Bellichek's waiting arms, at least we could have chose the team he ended up with if we traded him.
Yet another example of a quality player not being utilised right and let go for nothing, we'll be seeing just what Ronnie can do next year, twice!!!

Who cares what home thinks? I can't stand the guy!

I like our RBs, but Mando's right, we need more speed in many areas of the offense. So, it's basically a toss-up to me who stays and goes. Ronnie has a longer lifespan (as he is younger) but is more injury-prone and would cost more. Ricky, along with Cobbs, Hilliard and a quicker back would get the job done IMO.

On another note, why does a guy (me) feel shaky about his QB this week on a fantasy squad that has Peyton Manning and Matt Cassell? I don't get it. Should never happen, but alas, it has. NFL season's are like an extended trip into the Twilight Zone.

The Best of Ronnie Brown video always amused me because the first clip shows him running into the end zone by bowling over Jason Allen.

I don't get it. Don't some of you 'Fans' actually watch the games? Don't you understand that this offensive line is well below average? A bad O-line makes everything look bad on offense. That doesn't take away from the other arguments - the skill players must make plays when given the opportunity. ...ask this how many games has this O-line played together? Then ask - the best Offenses - how many games has their O-lines had together? ...do you get the picture yet?

I agree with Turd: what's wrong with Cobbs all of a sudden? From what I remember, Sparano was high on him.

Armando, c'mon man! You have to be kidding me with this sentence:

"Williams, enigmatic and unpredictable, speaks with the local media only rarely for reasons known only to himself."

Have you forgotten how brutally the media (people like you) tore him up, mocked and ridiculed him for years??? He hasn't forgotten.

>Any kind of violent action taken against anybody in response to something written in Internet will result in the end of Humanity as we now know it.

Don't tempt me.

The offensive line hasnt given them much to work with this year for sure, but...It also seems like Ronnie hasnt run as "hard" this year as in the past. You can always tell when Ronnie wants an extra yard or two cause he turns around and runs backwards driving with his legs. I dont think ive seen him push the truck more than a few times all season. Ricky is still a beast. I think their productivity has gone down not only because of the shitty OLINE but the bad timing of Dan Hennings play calling. To much focus on Henne has pulled Sporano's team away from their strengths (Ricky and Ronnie).

Looking at the video footage of Ronnie, you forget how good he actually was. We haven't seen ANY of that this year. I think we need to take a back in the first round and replace Brown. I would bring Williams back for one more year. I think he still has some value and could spell the rookie. And I agree, this OL needs to get figured out and stuck with before our backs can do anything.

I want to change the topic for a second. What do the Dolphins have to finish for Sparano to keep his job? Personally I think the Dolphins need to get to 8-8, which means they have to at least split their next four games. I bring it up because I think Jeff Fisher is going to come available as a potential head coach for next year and I wonder how many people would like to see him in Miami? I'd be happy with that. There's going to be some good coaches available this offseason in Fisher, Gruden, Cowher, John Fox and even Jim Harbaugh. Do we make the change at the end of the year or have confidence in Sparano for another year and maybe miss out on some good candidates?

Craig - I say Fischer all the way. Maybe Harbaugh, no on the others. I've said it many times, while Sparano is a good guy and the players really like playing for him, he just isn't the brightest bulb in the socket. That won't change. I don't see him ever matching wits with the top coaches in this league.

To me it has appeared that the line has been well below average on running plays this year and for the most part adequate to above average on passing plays. That being said there were two games which come to mind where they sucked against the pass also but I'm talking in generalities. Based on that and the irratic play calling I don't think this is a good year to judge either Ricky or Ronnie. If you can get them cheap bring them back, if not see ya.

Resign Ricky & Hilliard & try to sign Deangelo Williams. If not, draft a FAST RB, not a plodder. Williams would give us that home run threat & only with a speed runner will this team have a change of pace back. Ricky won't command a long term deal & still has a year or two left. Ronnie will be looking for a big pay day & sadly, he just isn't worth the investment in terms of years of big $$$

If this coaching staff is back..Ronnie Brown will be probalbly be back, because they love the wildcat and Ronnie is the only one currently on the team that can run it. The dolphins will draft a running back this year and that will seal Ricky or/and Ronnie's career hear in Miami, pending the type back they draft.

The real ELEPHANT in the room is who will play QB? Why isn't there a QB controversy? Why hasn't one writer this week called for Thigpen to be the starter this week to see what value he has for this team? Henne has shown his stripes and he is a skunk. Lets see what Thigpen has these last four games and then go into the offseason with enough film to evaluate both these guys. Mark my words you will here it again from Sparano that he does not have enough game film on Thigpen with this team to give him a fair evaluation. Duffas! Maybe everyone knows something about Thigpen that I haven't realized yet. Can he really be worst than Henne?

God, I was screaming for them to trade Ronnnie for a draft pick last year! Now we got $hit.

Ronnie and Ricky are no longer breaking tackles like they used to. They both go down way too easy. The younger Ricky was a beast to get down, intimidated everyone, plowed over people like they were bananas, he was feared. I can still see keeping Ricky one more year, not Brown. Another point forgotten, Ricky has great hands, as good as any back and can be real productive in the passing game.

Thigpen is a FA after the season isn't he? So Miami has to sign a FA QB & draft a QB since Penny likely won't be here. Not only do we have no RB's signed for next year, we also have no Qb's other than Henne. LOL The foresight of this GM & mng't team is mind boggling!

I have a feeling HIlliard will end up being a FB when the fins decide to get rid of Polite. We are going to draft a RB somewhere in the draft bank on it.

Armando said:

"Fact is it would be cheaper for the Dolphins to draft a running back and replace one of the two veterans, then depend on one of the two along with rookie during the coming season."

Huh!? Isn't that the same thing? "Draft a running back and replace one of the two veterans...", or "...depend on one of the two along with (a) rookie during the coming season."

What am I missing here? Either way he is saying to keep one of the two and draft a RB (rookie) or depend on one of the two, ie. keep one but not both along with a rookie (a drafted RB).

Fins going to see Broadway show before Jets game. Jeezus. This is our superbowl. Nothing like some showtunes to get the guys pumped. How South Florida is that? Fabulous! Are they talking about treatments in ST meetings? Suddenly, it's all starting to make sense.

Run Ricky, Run!

Ricky Williams believes the Dolphins would run the ball better if they ran it more.

And he believes the Wildcat offense has likewise sputtered because of lack of use.

Going into Sunday's game against the New York Jets, Miami ranks last in the AFC in scoring, and a so-so ground game is part of the problem. Neither Williams nor Ronnie Brown has had a 100-yard game this season.

Last season, Williams ran for 1,121 yards, the Dolphins ranked fourth in the NFL in rushing. This season, they're 18th.

"I don't think we've done it enough," Williams said Wednesday during a conference call with New York media. "Last year, we ran it for 100 yards several times, and it was because we were running the ball. Whether we're getting down in games or coach likes the passing game plan, we just haven't run the ball enough."

Williams wasn't necessarily criticizing play-calling, noting the addition this season of Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall made passing a more appealing option.

Williams said the situation's the same with the Wildcat. Last season, the package featuring Brown and Williams averaged 4.7 yards per play and 28 per game; this season, the averages are 3.0 per play and 12 per game.

"We just haven't run it enough," Williams said. "I don't think we've called it enough in games. I don't think we've run it enough and worked on it in practice enough to make it a big part of our offense."

Williams himself remains productive at age 33. As Brown's backup, he has averaged 45 rushing yards per game and 4.5 per carry. The latter figure is higher than his career average of 4.1.

"He's having a good season," Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said. "He's done a good job for what we've asked him to do. He's running the ball well -- still shows me that he's got a good burst and runs the ball hard and is physical."

For more on the Miami Dolphins, check out the latest from our bloggers.

Williams, the 2002 NFL rushing champion, has rushed for 9,436 yards, meaning he might reach 10,000 if he plays next season. He needs 431 yards to surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer Larry Csonka as the leading rusher in Dolphins history.

Williams is undecided about whether or not he'll return in 2011.

"I'll be a free agent after this year," he said. "I'll be 34 next year. It's kind of wait and see. If someone wants me and they can convince me to do this one more year, I'll definitely have the opportunity. If not, I'm happy with what I've been able to accomplish in my career."

Miami Dolphins Sunday 4:15 pm vs New York Jets

No we've all seen emough of Thigpen and he's not the answer. Do you honestly think he did a good job against the Bears? He ran the offence at a 1,000 miles an hour. I don't get people's fascination with this guy. He's NEVER won in this league, as his 1-12 record indicates and isn't that the most important thing you want your quarterback to do. I think he's an adequate backup but if he ends up somewhere else next year, then so be it. He won't lead a team to the playoffs.

Hilarious.....I just read that they are blasting Peyton Manning in Indy for his performance over the last few weeks. They think he should be benched and that the Colts should be drafting his successor in the draft this year. Sounds like they've lost their marbles in Indy too.

Glad to see that you've, somehow,
managed to skirt those fake charges in
Stockholm to send posts to the Herald!

Both Ronnie & Ricky are "run between the tackle" type RB's.
Since our O-line cannot open holes to save their lives, the RB's look bad.
I agree we need a speedy RB who can get outside and "turn the corner", neither one of our RB's can do it.
Henning tries to tun the "end around" with Hartline or Bess with poor results.

This man held as a scapegoat, lost 100 million dollars and was sentenced to 2 years of in a maximum security prison to pay for the sins of his own and all, has been and should have been forgiven

Mike Vick had 729,838 fan votes, nearly 39,000 more than second-place Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, the NFL said Wednesday. Manning topped the balloting two weeks ago.

God Bless
The "New Mike Vick"

15 passing TDs
6 rushing TDs

only 2 Ints

Home is a big proponent of the man who has paid for his sins ... Mike Vick

If you don't have a clue, please just read and don't write, oh wait, that would mean 90% of you wouldn't write.

Only in America can someone F**k up as bad as Vick aid and reinvent himself.
PS Home - Vick was not a scapegoat, he murdered hundreds of dogs in very inhuman ways.

Were all sinners....enough already.

Let's discuss how we can fix our running game!

If Indy doesn't want Peyton, we will take him!

Still with this Vick and dogs nonsense? He already paid WAY too big a price for what he did. Let it go. A million dog lives could not even add up to one human life. Who cares already?? It wasn't cool but it's done, the price was paid, everyone move on. I never understood this attitude of holding cats and dogs up on a pedestal in this continent.

He's paid his dues guys....time to move on from the past.

i want to trade for the guy in that video up there. ... is it possible that ronnie's lisfranc fracture is just taking a really long time to heal? that he'll turn it back up next year?

You do realize Vick plays in the pass happy spread em out and pad stats vs inferior teams like Lions, Jax, Washington and so on. Vick, Kolb, McNabb and AJ "freaking" Feeley have put up 300 yards in Andy Reid's offense. Kolb won this year vs. the best team (record 10-2) Atlanta in the NFL. The Eagles are great with Vick but can win without him. Kolb doesn't make the offense as dynamic but he would be easily throwing for 300 yards in a pass every down, send everyone out on routes offense.

The NFL MVP is clearly, I repeat CLEARLY Tom Brady followed by Philip Rivers if the Chargers find a way into the playoffs.

Ronnie will not end up in NE. He does not fit the Belecheat model of RB at all. Where I can see Ronnie is in a place like Indy. They could use a power back and would be able to keep Manning on the field longer with him. Personally, I do not feel that Ronnie is worth what he will cost.

I feel Miami should try and Keep Ricky interested. He is much fresher then most 33 (34 by next year) running backs because he takes very good care of himself anf he did not play for a few years in the NFL. Ricky has also never had any Knee, Ankle, Foot or Hip issues and that is Always good news as running backs go. Ronnie came go down at any point and has shown that over the years.

"If Nothing Changes... Nothing Changes"

Miami needs to draft a Back, a good back. A First round back if they can. Ingram because of his lack of elite speed may be available when Miami pick, Mikel Leshoure out of Illinois will CERTAINLY be there and I feel he is the quiet steal of the draft.

One way or another we must split these two up... They have actually hurt each of them by not allowing them to get into a grove and bang the lines. Switching them every series I feel has hurt our running game... I do not see Adrian Peterson being replaced every other series... Do YOU?

How would Tommy look in Patriots offense with Henning as OC?

Happy Holidays to U & your family Andy J

I can't wait until Ronnie is gone. He is a 230 lb ballerina. He runs with NO authority and hasn't for 2 seasons. He is done. The NFL shelf life is souring and will be expiring on Brown's time in the NFL. He at his best in spot duty not as a full time starter.

I'd love to see Miami draft a RB in the 3rd or 4th round and pair them with Ricky. However, Ricky will most likely be gone next year too.

Miami was supposed to be smash mouth football this year and there were epectations of Ronnie and Ricky producing 1000 yard seasons but it didn't happen. Ricky can still rush for 1000 if he gets the carries but splitting time with a bum like Brown he won't
