RoboHenne is back and that is not a good thing

One of the things I perceive is a problem with quarterback Chad Henne is his robotic, unfeeling, almost zombie-like approach to playing his position.

Henne would never think of calling a freak audible that isn't dictated by the defense or coaching staff. He follows his progression of reads even if it means throwing a 4-yard pass to Ricky Williams with 23 seconds to play from his own 28 yard line when he's got no timeouts and needs to go 45 yards to line up for a game-tying FG.

Heart? Passion? Emotion? Nowhere to be found.

It drives me crazy.

Henne had one game when he played like a guy with a big heart in his chest and emotion coarsing through his body this season: The Raiders game on November 28. He has since gone back to the uninstinctive, unemotional, uninspired, unsatisfactory play that we saw before he got benched.

On Sunday, however, Henne took robotics to a new high. He did it on the field. And he did it in his post-game press conference to the point he is starting to lose credibility.

To recap: On Sunday the Dolphins lost their sixth home game in seven outings. The offense was largely ineffective against one of the worst defenses in the NFL. The loss eliminated the Dolphins from the playoffs.

The pain and meaning of the day was captured by perfectly by Brandon's Marshall, who issued a finely tuned apology to his defensive teammates for the offense's poor play. Marshall also said it was everyone's fault, including coaches, that the offense is not producing. (You can read Marshall's statement in the previous post.)

Henne followed less than a minute after Marshall spoke. And he totally lost me.

(On Brandon Marshall’s comments apologizing to the defense) – “I mean it’s not embarrassing. Obviously we didn’t do what we wanted to do out there execution wise and finishing the game but we win and lose as a team; there’s no pointing fingers. That’s about it; we win and lose as a team.”

What he should have said: I can't blame Brandon for feeling the way he does. I can't disagree, either. No one with a brain would.

(On whether it was frustrating being taken out of the game late while the Wildcat was run) – “Well I mean that’s the coach’s decision. They make the call and if they feel they can run something with the Wildcat and make some positive yards, we’ll do that.”

What he should have said: Frankly, yes. I think Wildcat has a great place in our offense but when the game is on the line, I want the ball in my hands. And I don't want to comment beyond that.

(On whether the fans were justified in booing with only one home win) – “They’ve been booing the last couple weeks so I guess we’re used to it. We, we don’t want to go out that way. It’s a sick feeling for us. I mean to not have home field advantage in this league is, it’s tough and it’s not like we’re not trying out there not to win at home. I mean there’s a lot of guys out there with a lot of heart playing, playing their hearts out out there for our fans and our home field advantage out there.”

What he should have said: Yes. We work for them and we haven't given them enough reasons to cheer, enough reasons to show up in droves, enough reasons to be happy. It is on us. They react to us. We don't react to them.

(On what he would change to get more touchdowns rather than field goals) – “I mean put it on our shoulders. Whatever is called, we’re not going to point our fingers at our coaches or players. Whatever is called we have to execute. We had some negative plays there, some penalties that hurt us. It’s just execution. We’ll put it on our shoulders as players to execute the play that’s called and making the decision after that.”

What he should have said: I would change my execution. It needs to improve. I'm the starting QB. I touch the football on every play. If I perform at a certain level, we'll score more points. Having said that, I'm still learning and I need to get better. Be patient. I'll get there.

I believe the Dolphins will go searching this offseason for a quarterback that doesn't play robotic and isn't seemingly walking on egg shells because the coaches have brow beaten him and turned him into a double-talker.

The Chad Henne I've seen this year is not that quarterback.

He should get a new contract Aloco....he just need to be sat down for anothr year or 2...you don't just let an arm like that walk away....He may just be a late bloomer...like brees, but you don't cut him...just pay him cheap and sit him down

CHRIS......... HOW YOU WANT HENNE TO BE A LEADER TO PLAYERS WHO MAKE MORE MONEY THAN HIM HAND OVER FIST .

P.S...SORY FOR USING THE WORD FIST AS FIST BUMP .

Chris in the 623 @ 10:23- thats a good funny!!!! LOL

Mark, in the Jets game & this last game, Henne was on the ground or contacted in 3 seconds or less. The "clock" in the qb's head everyone always talks about is 3 seconds. He can't even get to 3 seconds. He has gotten completely rattled this year & like Beck, not sure he'll recover from it.

Just how much of it is Henne under strict control of the dictators, and how much of it is Henne just not developing, if not regressing, seems impossible to gauge from the living room. I'd sure like to here from an insider on what is really going on with that situation. One thing seems obvious, Henne isn't the type to take the bull by the horns and make something happen. He seems to have this pattern of 5 bad quarters followed by 1 good one all season now.

Kyle, he gets more than 3, haha. Oh crap.

Kris, trading a pick for Palmer and his $11 million a year contract? I wouldn't give an unprocessed niblet of corn from my crap for that.

NO MORE TRADING PICKS!!! Especially not for retread vets like Palmer - HE STINKS!

I for one don't think Henne played THAT BAD yesterday. I think it's incredible that Henne actually amassed 270 passing yards with constant 2 man WR sets. This team only dresses 4 wr and 1 TE and can't run block. How in the blue heck are you supposed to score through the air? Where's the speed to score on the big play? This guy is young and shell shocked and getting absolutely no help from the play calling or design.

One deep pass to Curtis, which Henne overthrew. Henne should be throwing deep at least 5x a game No deep throws over the middle. Almost all Marshall and Bess routes are outs. Fasano? Always used for ONE series per game then Henning forgets about him. Henne moving ball downfield on last series, we go to WildCat? Henne three for close to 300 yards.

HENNE IS VERT CLEARLY UNDER ORDERS FROM THE DICTATORS AND THAT AFFECTS EVERY THING IN HIS PLAY ,NOW HE SMILES B/C HE KNOWS IT'S NOT WORKING THE WAY THE DICTATORS INSIST ON IT.HE SAYS TO HIMSELF ,WHY IN HELL FOR 600,00 I HAVE TO RE INJURE MYSELF AGAIN FOR THE DICTATORS AND THE RICH OL PLAYERS .

I AM VERY SMART .lol

Why oh why on 3rd and long Henne is constantly moved back under center?

Everyone take a good long look at Detroits Drew Stanton. Hes a third string QB with all the throws and runs good. Hes a playmaker and very smart. Some lucky team will trade for him this off season.

At best Henne right now is a Qb that needs to be in the right system and have good personnel around him to be effective. He needs a good run game - he needs a good OL. And I don't think there is any other Qb out there you can take and put in this exact same system not named Peyton Manning or Phillip Rivers or Ben Rothliesberger or Drew Brees that could make this shambles of an offense a playoff team. Not even Tom Brady could do it? Everyone knows Brady crawls into the fetal position when he gets hit once - he would put himself on IR with this OL protecting him.

Drew Stanton is garbage.

The Dolphins wont be able to draft higher then say 10th which means all top shelf QB's will be gone before Dolphins pick. Stanton makes good sense. Take a look.

Henne is not immune from blame. His mechanics are poor and his accuracy is off on some throws. With that said, if anyone thinks this isn't a direct result of the pressure & hits he is taking is out of his mind.

He is a sitting duck waiting for guys to come open. All his sacks the last 2 games he has been on the ground in 3 seconds or less. This isn't cause of his mobility or him being too dumb to feel pressure, it's protection. He takes the shorter routes cause he doesn't have time to wait for other things to develop.

What's all this talk about Palmer? Palmer has more int's than Henne I believe and he has Owens & Ochocinco to throw to. If he can't get it to them, I don't see him doing any better here.

Mark,

how you know drew stanton is garbage sitting on your sofa ? he scored 3 td yesterday .another player in det is shawn hill .i believe they will not trade either of them due to the prone injured stanford w/his shoulder .

Excellent post JoeSchmoe. We will lose Nolan if he doesn't become HC. He wasn't good in SF but Belichek wasn't good in Cleveland either. Nolan as HC (no DC necessary with him at the helm) with a ballsy OC (yeah, I'd take Kubiak but there are probably more candidates out there).

Nolan has turned this D around in less than one full season (some issues remain, sure, but they are very good overall). If he had a strong, inventive OC under him, he'd not have to worry. And neither would we.

Ox80 coaching. When Henne said a month ago in an interview that the coaches told him his job is to not make mistakes, I knew he wasn't being coached right. You tell your young QB, take charge. You tell him, go out there and keep slinging, mistakes will happen but you learn from those mistakes. You tell your QB you have confidence in him. You DON'T tell him, manage the game like we tell you and make no mistakes. This coaching staff has Fu@ked this kid up.

ALoco, because I've seen enough of Drew Stanton over the years to know for sure. He was one of those 2nd round qbs that came out in 2007 with Trent Edwards and John Beck. They all stink.

2 good points made- both go hand and hand i think..

Mark- This guy(Henne) is young and shell shocked and getting absolutely no help from the play calling or design

bobbyd12- Almost all Marshall and Bess routes are outs

MARK, may be he got better ,beck in was getting the praise of the hc there .you need to be patient w/you second and third qb .

mark, what are you going to have fo christmas ,meat wise ?

every one else ,same question ,no pork allowed .

Sparano is not HC material. I don't think he ever will be. He isn't going to outwit the top coaches in this league. The players like playing for him, that is a huge plus, but he can't manage a game or properly lead his staff.

Last night I watched a Rookie QB take the Pats to a worried end....yet the Dolphins make excuses for a QB that has yet shown to have any kind of fire in him....has yet shown he has "it". After two years of playing...I have seen enough to already know that Henne will never be a QB that can take ANY team to the Superbowl and the simple fact that the coaching staff still has faith in him should tell us that they don't know much about QB's.
Is it Henne's total fault...no...but heavy is the head that wears the Crown. Goodbye Henne, Goodbye Henning and Goodbye Sparano.

kap

ross should fire dictator no 1 henning and wait on dictator no 2 sparano for next year . the hire a con artist for OC to trick the teams w/plays .he got be young and not known very well .

i want a qb with a pulse

Go to YouTube and search for Chad Henne Sucks. All your questions will be answered.

Between Sparano's inability to solidify an O-line, improve a poor ST unit in 3 years, inability to win home games, fail to produce even a mediocre NFL offense, arguably destroy a young QB's confidence...I think those are grounds for firing. He just isn't HC material.

If keeping Nolan means making him HC, then you do it. There is justification for letting Sparano go. He was a position coach who knew the right people. That's the ONLY reason he is a HC today.

Some talent is there, it's not like they can't start over. It's not 2007 anymore. Teams make mistakes with coaches all the time. The mistake is not turning over & making a change. The real mistake is sticking with the mistake in hopes it somehow gets better. The past is the best predictor for future events. In Miami, that is NOT a good thing.

Fact is Henne didn't play like this at Michigan, this robotic, type style was coached to him. Kid plays scared

it's not a joke BUT MATT FLYNN CONTRACT.....46O,000 A YEAR

DREW STANTON CONTRACT PER YER ...............660,000 MORE THAN HENNE AFTER SUFFERING 2 KNNE INJURES W/LIONS

Guys let's look at this team a year ago. The defence was horrible! Missed assignments, missed tackles, too many plays off, lack of effort some games....just a mess! What did we do? DC gone!! Some of the vets like Taylor, Porter, Wilson gone!! We draft heavily on the defence bringing in guys like Misi, Dansby and Jones, play Wake full time and the best new addition of all Mike Nolan. We're now looking at a top 5 defence....VIOLA!!

Offence this year looks horrid! Out with the OC and focu on offence in the draft. I don't think it's inconceivable that we can't do with the offence what we did with the defence last year. I don't see any reason why we can't be a top team next year under Sparano with the proper changes. At 7-7 I don't believe we are that far away. I'll remind everybody that No went 8-8 the year before they won the Super Bowl. I believe that's us. The top games we started the year with against the Bills and Vikings were as good a games as I've seen us play. We need more of that next year.

Graig M- thats a feel good positive look! as a life long Fin Fan, i dont feel as confident today man

Do they do drug testing for coaches? Call the Commish> Maybe they should start after those play calls yesterday.

FishyPete, you sound like the same fans who said Drew Brees would never be a QB. In fact fans begged for Brees to be canned for his first 4 years. NO ONE can say a QB is or isn't going to be a good QB after 25 games.

Joe excellent post re:Sparano. The guy strikes me as being a mental midget. Took him 3 years to figure out his special teams coach stunk - 2 to find out his def co-ordinator stunk, and 3 to find out his off co-ordinator was absolutely lost. parcells was pretty crap in drafting and free agents with us too. Luckily we had ownership who handed over a large cheque book time and time again to cover up for some of his bunk. Just our luck - we get the senile Parcells instead of the genius.

Can we start a petition to hire Bill Cowher?

Aloco - standing rib roast

Anyone listen to Mike &Mike this a.m. Rumor is that covert is very interestted in the Phone.

I agree Bobby, Henne should be around - but they've got to push him. It's next year or bust with henne. Even I, one of the most hard ass Henne backers knows that the time is growing thin for him to put up or go.

SHAUN HILL THE NO 2 QB IN DET HIS CONTRACT WAS EXTENDED THROUGHT 2011 ,,HE ALSO WAS VOTED THE SECOND BEST BACK QB

HIS CONTRACT,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 4.2 MILLION FOR THIS COMING SEASON ONLY .

And I do not want any Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden hirings - I don't want these old vet coaches who got used to the fat life to come back with us and figure out he doesn't want it anymore like JJ or Saban.

I want young, hungry, driven, intelligent coaches - like Jim harbaugh. The life of a OC is not an easy one and you have to figure out if you have the heart and stomach for it. Mike Nolan would also be an interesting option - I think you need to keep his defensive style around.

THE SLEEPER QB IN NEW ENGLAND IS HOYER THE GREAT .

HOW IN HELL DID WE SIGN CHAD.P TO BE THE BACK UP FOR HENNE ?

Comment was supposed to read......Cowher is interested in the Phish. Stupid smart phone.

I have really been thinking things over sinc last night first off screw Cowher we dont need him we already have the best defensive mind in Mike Nolan. Hopefully he stays bc he has done a tremendous job for us. But I hate to admit it but Gruden might be the best choice here. He is much better at reforming the offense. Look he won a super bowl with trent frickin dilfer. That says alot to me. You combine both Gruden and Nolan and you have the potential to be a winner. I would keep Ireland bc he has helped build a great D and had some great pickups (to the haters we all make mistakes no team is perfect not even NE). As far as the OC goes Kubiak (if fired) should be the top choice but next up a sleeper by the name of Steve Mariucchi. He helped Steve Young maybe he can help our young padawan. I guess we can all start looking forward to the draft now. I have a feeling that Jake Locker is going to slip to the mid to late first round but we shall see. The bigger question is do we take him if he is there? Another question is can we completely rebuild the OL through FA I dont have the answer. By the way a trade down is possible as well. Lamichael James is a interesting prospect.

The Fins owner, Stephen Ross is missing from all the blog post...he is the man who can change everything.
Ross wants the "ultimate fan experience" and Henne is not it.

I one act on Jan 3rd Ross can fire
Sparano, Ireland and the entire coaching staff and bring in his own people.

Then, tell his new coach to TRADE UP on draft day and get Cam Newton...no matter what it cost.

Newton is a younger, stronger, faster version of Vick and someone who will get the fans butts into the seats to fulfill Ross's vision of the "Ultimate Fan Experience"

Guys I'm a broken record today but I REPEAT...How bad was our defence last year? It was dismal! We turned it around. We can do the same with the offence.....watch!

For all those guys who want Henne gone and a QB taken in the FIRST round...you're a bunch of idiots! The guy is 25 years old and you don't give up on 25 year old QBs. We CANNOT afford to waste another first round pick on a QB, who we have no clue if he will play at this level. You guys criticize Henne but I ask you, what is Sam Bradford's teams record this morning? How about Drew Stafford? Jason Campbell? Alex Smith? NONE of these guy's teams have a better record than the Dolphins this morning....NONE. You're asking us to waste another first round pick, we have no second and we have an OL that is broke, with no running game, missing a pass-catching TE and another WR. It's a recipe for disaster and plan that will move us closer to 1-15 than to a Championship. You will get no immediate return next year and that's what we need....not to tread water. Go out and sign a guy like Marc Bulger or Brody Croyle to give Henne some competition next year but let's see how Henne works with someone like Gary Kubiak or Josh McDaniels before we write him off completely.

Craig, I hear you, but it's Sparano's mindset that dictates a change there. That and his inability to manage a game when it's crunchtime. In three years he is still making the same time management mistakes and is still playing not to lose.

Nolan for HC, bring in a strong, ballsy new OC and you've got what you need. As far as GM, I don't know. There's a lot about Ireland I don't like and the results have been mixed - but I can't see Peterson as a better choice and, frankly, I don't know who else there is (not saying there aren't candidates, I just don't know who they might be.

As far as QB, we are stuck with mediocrity. We won't draft high enough to get an ace and we won't trade the farm for a guy like Kolb. That leaves us with Henne, Thigpen and somebody like an Orton or a Stanton or Edwards. Nothing special. I like Thigpen the best of the those even if he is short. He has chutzpah. However, I am not naive enough to think he is anything but a fun stopgap. It may be that the Fins have to build an offense without a premier QB for now. They have some pieces but need (other than QB):

RT
RG (although, I think Jerry will be okay here, or you could move Carey inside)
C (for sure as Berger is a backup)
RB (Ricky is better than Ronnie and has another year in him so you keep him and find a fast, lateral runner - drop/trade Ronnie - he has an option year left I think)
WR - Need a true #2 with speed. Hartline is just okay. Curtis seems to have speed, just not a QB who can get it to him.
TE - for sure as Fasano is pedestrian. Should have had Hernandez or Gronkowski. Couldn't believe it when they could've pulled the trigger and didn't.

Defensively:

Sign Soliai
FS/SS (Bell is getting old, Jones could play SS but then you'd need an upgrade over Clemons who is average but better than Wilson.
Better depth at corner. Smith keeps getting lambasted here but he learns to catch and he's actually playing very well. Davis is good, just needs to mature a tad. Let early praise go to his head I think.
Otherwise this D seems pretty well stocked. Esp. with Edds as a possibility and if Odrick can stop breaking his legs, he could be good.

I wonder if Henne is just mailing it in, because he sees the writing on the wall. He is done.

NHFINSFAN - even Nolan? I think he's.been pretty good.

I HOPE HENNE HAVE A REAL SMART AGENT ,THIS COMING CONTRACT MUST PAY HIM IN THE RANGE OF 6 MILLION PLUS .

Alright...Nolan stays

Offseason priorities involving personnel for me:

Re-Sign Soliai & Mcdaniel long term
Re-sign Ricky & Thigpen for 1 year
Sign Denagelo Williams or Michael Bush
Draft a RB
Draft a QB
Draft a TE with speed
Move Jones to FS or sign a Vet & move Clemmons behind or ahead of Bell
Sign R. Cooledge to play LG
Sign Ryan Kalil at Center
Move garner to RG
Give Carey a shot again at RT or draft a RT
Sign 2 CB's like R. Marshall, K. Jennings
Make a BIG play to sign B. Smith! Returns, WR, QB & Wildcat skill set!

I don't think we've taken a QB in the first round since 83. Am I wrong?

I know its a blog and we all make typos...but....can some of you at least learn how to spell 'OFFENSE' and 'DEFENSE'? You read these two words every single day in the football section yet still can't spell them, pathetic.

COPhan,

That is a completely ridiculous post you made at 11:26am. Did you even watch the game yesterday? Henne ended up with 276 yards passing with one pick and one TD. Which part of that did you think he was mailing in?

uys, don't discount if the team loses the last two, that Ross cans eveybody and brings in Carl Peterson and John Fox. If the team finishes 1-7 at home this year it's not going to sit well with the coach. He may decide there is good talent out there in the coaching ranks and decide to make the move this year instead of next.

Right on Poindexter...was begining to think we were living in England or something.

JOE SCHMO, I ASSURE YOU NO THING WILL HAPPEN FROM YOUR LIST .THE DOLPHINS NEXT YEAR WILL COPY THE NEW ENGLAD TEAM AS MIKE DEE THE VP WILL HELPING W/PLAN .

SIGN HENNE FOR A NEW CONTRACT
ALL HANDS ON DECK TO SIGN 2 QB'S
DRAFT RB

I LIKE TO ADD;

DRAFT A QB IF NOT 2

I am torn between "sign" a QB vs. "draft" a QB.
Everytime we've "signed" a QB we've been burned and the list is too long for me to copy herein.
"Draft" a QB has not gone well either...including the current Henne experiment.
Last time we drafted in the first round is was some guy named "Marino" and he turned out pretty good.

DRAFT NEWTON U F**CING MORONS

I personally don't want Fox, Cowher or Gruden. Gruden has essentially destroyed 2 franchises with aging players. His last stint in Tampa, their offense was abysmal and had 3 different QB's.

Fox is in the lines of Sparano & Henning. Wasn't Henning his O coordinator once? Not to mention, aside from his Super Bowl appearance, what has he done? The totally tanked 2 years ago with home field advantage CLINGING to a QB that was obviously in decline. He seems as out of touch as the present guys we have in place.

Based on how much emphasis Ross puts on the home atmosphere, he is probably thinking change. The longer he stays quiet, the more I think it's bad news for Sparano. You can't go 1-6 at home, it can't be tolerated.

So who starts next week? I will believe Henne should start the final two weeks as he gives the team the best chance to win. But public outcry may force Sparano to go another direction. Especially since Sparano knows Ross wants butts in the seats and the status quo won't do that. I predict Sparano HAS to start Thigpen against Detroit. That's my prediction for the week.
