« Browns beat Dolphins, 13-10 | Main | Henne remains the starter, but evaluation coming »

Ross skips out on postgame locker room -- again

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano or general manager Jeff Ireland or both have a problem -- and it has nothing to do with what you think.

It doesn't have to do with the fact quarterback Chad Henne is inconsistent and both are tied to Henne as the franchise QB. It has nothing to do with the fact no one in Miami's defensive backfield can be trusted to catch a potential interception delivered directly to the hands. It also has nothing to do with the fact the running game, around which the offense is supposed to be built, has been absent the entire season.

Those problem pale for Miami's top football men compared to this: Owner Stephen Ross is clearly not happy.

And Ross makes the final call on both Sparano's and Ireland's job status.

Ross was at Sunday's 13-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns at Sun Life Stadium. But when the Dolphins lost, he made himself scarce. Unlike other games in which Ross goes from his suite to the team's locker room, Ross skipped the trip on Sunday.

And it was at least the second home loss after which Ross skipped joining his team in the locker room after the game. He wasn't there after the shutout loss to Chicago Nov. 18. So that's two consecutive games after which Ross does not go see his team.

This, by the way, may not seem significant to you. But how the owner's feels about his team is something the football people must be keenly monitoring if they want to enjoy some sort of job security. And it is clear those absences are a sign of disapproval.

It doesn't end there.

Ross is clearly not happy with Miami's 1-5 home record. That record is terrible for any team, but particularly frustrating for a team that has managed a 5-1 record on the road. Clearly, if a team can win on the road, it should be able to manage some wins at home as well. If that isn't happening, it suggest they are under-achieving at home. Certainly, Sunday's loss to the previously 4-7 Cleveland Browns suggests that.

And that is bad because Ross wants his home games to be fun and entertaining and an event. He has spent many resources -- celebrities, concerts, noise, etc ... -- on making home games a bigtime experience.

The problem is all the appetizer and side dish stuff loses its meaning when the main course, the actual football team, is not palatable on its home turf. What's more, the Dolphins are not only seldom successful at home this year, they are boring in the process.

The Dolphins are averaging 16.3 points per game at home this year. They are averaging 19.5 points on the road.

That is not good. And it is especially not good when the owner is so keen on entertainment and showtime and offering people a compelling reason to attend games.

That leads me to the next issue: The Dolphins have two more home games at Sun Life Stadium this season. Never mind whether they win or lose those games against Buffalo (Dec. 19) and Detroit (Dec. 26).

The fact is neither one of those games is sold out at this time. The fact is, barring some unexpected series of events, neither of those games is likely to sell out in time to avert the local television blackout.

That sets a bad tone, folks. Home games that are not sold out make the owner (more) unhappy.

And that is increasingly an issue for folks like Sparano and Ireland.

[I'll be discussing this very topic on my radio show, Armando and the Amigo, today from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. I'm sure the other local morning hosts that read this blog for material will pick up on this, but I would encourage you to listen to me directly so I can share other tidbits on this topic with you. Armando and the Amigo is on 640 Sports in South Florida.]

Ross actually has himself to blame. All this home losing didn't start until he brought all his celeb friends in and turned the place from a football stadium into a Hollywood club. He deliberately created an atmosphere that is anything BUT football-friendly and needs to realize this but probably never will.

Well keeping the early games at 100 pm would definitely help. He is from Michigan, what does he know.

And that would affect how the actual Football Players "Play" on the field, HOW?? Come on, I dont care about all the celebrity crap either, but that has nothing to do with how Henne throws, Marshall catches, or Crowder tackles..the players look very unmotivated playing...changes are coming, just depends on if they will be for the better or worse. I for one, was excited for the Tuna to come, but the way he left indicated that there were internal issues, and it still feels that way..Miami just does not have "IT" right now...How we get "It"...I just dont know...something is just missing...but it aint Ross' fault...he let/s Tuna/Ireland/Sparano do their thang...just because he has a vision of entertainment to the actual stadium has nothing to do with the players...he has always removed himself from that...

Yes DolFan 316, Ross is to blame for the losing. Are you kidding me?!

The angrier Ross gets, the closer we get to Gruden, and to Dan Henning's retirement party.

And Chucky's first order of business should be buying Mike Nolan a big lobster dinner and saying, "Keep on doing what you're doing, baby."

As an NFL organization, the Miami Dolphins have some serious issues to address.
The Dolphins are no closer to winning a Superbowl than they were with JJ, Whineystadt, Satan, or Camoron.
It's friggin' depressing and it's been going on since Shula got canned.
It would be nice if we could at least defend the home turf but we can't even do that.
If Ross is serious about winning, he can toss any personal relationships out the door and bring in a crew that knows how to kick some gridiron butt.

What Ross has done off the field has nothing to do with the on-field performance. Celebrities being at the game has nothing to do with it. Look at the Lakers, they're only the most successful NBA team in history. Yes, Fergie is the reason the Dolphins can't score. Kicking Fergie out of the stadium will win us the Super Bowl!

People please stop blaming the fact that the Dolphins offense is mediocre at best on trivial things. You're starting to sound like Cowboys fans who blamed a loss on Jessica Simpson instead of just admitting the Cowboys are choke artists.

I think the blaming of the changes Ross has brought to the home games are more racist related than football related. He has not taken anything away from the players to give to the "Celebs" its not like he is paying them to come to the game and then not paying for the gatorade for the players... please take your narrow mind some place else... when you are ready to talk football come back.

IMO, It would be great if they fire henning tomorrow and start looking for a replacement now, do some different play-calling on this last games and lets see how much of the problem WAS the game-calling and what is the players/execution.

I was hoping to see Thigpen in the 4th quarter just to see something different! I feel bad for him because the only chance he got was with a shredded O-line...At least if he plays good it improves his trade value.

Sadly I do believe we have to go QB on the 1st round now...

I wonder if they get Dan to give the QBs a small clinic on Pro-QB'ing in the NFL ;-)

I should be sleeping, bye!

Amen, Adam.

Looks like 7-9 again! Maybe you beat Detroit, sure as hell are not touching the Jets, Pats or Bills!

the drafts have been good, so IMO Ireland gets a pass. But agreed, Tony better watch his ass.

If there's a change, which I hope there is not, Nolan should be given a chance. Always liked him over here in SF when he was coaching. a great leader, he just got screwed by drafting Alex Smith.

But, Tony and Henne should be given next year to prove themselves.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

****************************************************************************

OBVIOUSLY...THE TEAM IS DISTRACTED BY THE

'THREE RING CIRCUS'

THAT TAKES PLACE AT EACH HOME GAME!

****************************************************************************

The OWNER has no one to blame but HIMSELF !!!!
.
.

The only 3 Dolphins earning their money are the Punter,Field Goal kicker and the Long Snapper. Miami needs a new back field. Brown has had it, Williams is next and Henne never had it.

dolfanSF...Wat? Drafts have been good, so Ireland's a keeper? The not ready for the NFL Head Coach should get another year with his game losing QB "I Robot" Frankenchad?

You really should stay away from the crack pipe before posting, meng! Don't you see our pain; or at least feel it? lol

Football Fans go to
Football Stadiums
to watch FOOTBALL!!
.
.

Don't blame the owner, put it on the 53 clowns on the roster.

Throwing Ints,Dropping ints,Letting field goals get blocked,Yeah you guys are right the owner is a rotten ball player. It's all his fault.

Your not a good ball club, coaching or player wise. End of story~~~

down goes miami, down goes miami hahahahaha

Ideally that Stadium should be closer to the City of Miami and not Broward County. Barring that, the present Stadium is NOT football friendly, players look like bacterium, crowd noise does not impact the game in a +/- way. People, Las Vegas does not give a 3 point home field advantage for nothing, don't you think?

Get lost Jet Fool, you'll get yours Monday night!

The writing was on the wall when they lost back to back home games against NY and NE. The entire offense has taken a huge step backwards this season, and its obvious Sparano has nothing more than a cuckoo for a brain. He isn't HC material.

I forgot to mention special teams, abysmal. I've never seen so many ST mistakes from one team in one season, and they are far from correcting them.

Parcells is a game day coach, thats what he does. The VP gig was not his strength, and only took it to be involved with something less strenuous than day to day coaching. He brought his two puppets over to march to his strings, but they are both in over their heads. Chalk it up to a failed experiment.

Tonight you be able to watch a good EXCITING football game on TV. Pats vs Jets, something that Fin fans have not seen in person for a very long time.

It would be a waste of pick to go QB in first round. We have too many other needs than to waste a pick on a QB first. We don't even have a 2nd. Henne has to get more consisitently good.

Maybe someone should take Henne to the eye doctor?????

The Parcell's experiment is over. We must go into 2011 with a new GM, Head Coach. Bring in Carl Peterson as GM and Gruden as Head Coach. Sign some significants free agents and hit a home run on the draft. The owner must take charge now and demand it's employees to perform better on the field.

I think this staff should be replaced in entirety. I just dont think Carl Petersen is the answer. He has never had any real success to speak of. I do like Gruden though.

BC, HOW COME DENVER WENT FOR TEBOW WHILE HAVING A DECENT QB IN ORTON WHO'S ATTING AT .....93

AT 6;18 AM ON 12/7/2010 WE NEED BAD TO DRAFT A QB IN THE FIRST ROUND .

Bite the bullet; two firsts for Kolb.

IT'S FUNNY, TUNA KNEW HE'S GONE ,HE SIGNS A DAMGE GOODS IN CHAD.P JUST TO WATCH GAMES FOR FREE FROM THE SIDELINE.

Q........HOW COME CHAD.P NEVER CAME TO TALK TO THE MEDIA AFTER HIS INJURY ?

Ross is a tool. He cares about rubbing elbows with celeb's. He doesn't want to sweat so he takes away the home field advantage by playing Sept. & October games on the road or at night. Shula never would've put up with all this nonsense.

I don't blame the owner, it has been coaching and poor QB play, better QB play and we win 2 or 3 more games this year and we are in the playoffs. I hate seeing them use timeouts because they are not ready on offense that falls on Henne, but also coaching you would think they would also work on this in practice, I am not sure if I am in favor of getting rid of Tony, But Ireland on the other hand probably should go, but then again maybe give him some more time as well the biggest problem is they were wrong about Henne, you have to have a good QB and we don't

I still don't think we are that far off, I would use the picks for the O line and maybe Dline next year, still not sure what we would do at QB though, Let Thigpen play the rest of the season and see if he can win some games our season is over we might as well see him for a few games, the last time out he did not have much help and all the injuries we had give him a shot, it is very disapointing season at the start I thought we had shot at the playoffs if the D was any good at all and they have played well except for all the dropped INTS just think how much our season would be different if we caught all the INTS this year

Not to take anything away from Jake Long, but we should have drafted Matt Ryan 1st overall. That was our chance to get our franchise QB.

We have ot have Gruden!! Hewas a Quarterbacks coach and recognizes Q.B. talaent. Watch his shows on ESPN. God knows we need a Quarterback!!! Actually 3!!! Send Sparano back to the Cowboys or whereever The Fat Tuna goes next to screw up!!! I know everyone blames Henning for the lack of offense but the idiot Henne is the one throwing the INT.s!!!

mando is there a way for me to lisren to your radio show over my iphone if not maybe you should talk to the brass about it

Everyone start calling the stadium and leave messages about firing Sparano, I'm so freakin' tired of seeing his fat a## jump up and down when they make a field goal!!!

Time to start thinking of 2011 season
1) Draft speed
2) Sigh a Cowboy RB they have 3 good ones AGAIN!
3) Fire Henning!!!
4) Find a QB with a pulse!!!

Thats all i want for Christmas!!!!!!!!!!

I was just telling my wife yesterday that this is the reason Sparano would get fired at the end of the season. A business decision pure and simple. Sparano said at the start of the season that this was the most complete team he's fielded. Complete except for coaching. The coaching decisions that shuffled players on and off the team and all over the O-line during preseason and even the first few weeks of the regular season have IMO adversely affected the results from Special Teams and the running game specifically and the team's record overall. With big names like Gruden and Cowher out there, Sparano definitely should be looking over his shoulder.

Sparano and Ireland must go. Period.
Under this regime, the team has REGRESSED every year.
Sparano is a position coach, Ireland an assistant GM. No more.

Look at the successful teams over the last 5 years (Pats, Colts, Saints,Chargers, ect) they all have good, consistant qb play. Then look at the bottom feeders of the league and tell me what they have for qb play.

If we truly want to be a top team, we need a franchise qb in the draft. We need to trade whatever to get him, but get him.

DRAFT A NEW QB AT FIRST DRAFT PICK .UNLESS YOU CAN FIND SOME WAY BY MOVING UP IN THE DRAFT BY TRADING DANSBY OR MARSHALL .

While I hate to endorse a change at coach -- knowing the upheaval that means to the whole org (when we're honestly not far from being good) -- I've about had it too. ... Still, I don't want to touch Gruden. He inherited the team that won his Super Bowl and his record got progressively worse.

THE falcons are 10-3 and their coach never jumps up for a field goal .by jumping up you telling your players you r the world and now you can go to sleep.

Coaching, players, the GM, ownership. These four items are the reason the Dolphins are not winning. And whining. Henne, as Ive posted many times is not the answer at QB. Sparano has been tinkering with the OL the entire season, thats the free agent OL brought here by the GM, Ireland and Parcells. Special teams coach got fired and they still play like shitzz. Ross needs to hire a new head coach, NOY Gruden, he aint done crap. Gruden is a news media driven head coach. All talk, no go. The Dolphin need a young fireball coach who coaches the word fear. Fear of losing your job.

This Parcells rebuilding job is a failure. The first year was great we had Penny and a good o-line. Then every year Fat Tony would tear the o-line apart, you can't win like that. What we thought were good even great drafts and free agents haven't worked out. Stick a fork in this turkey it's done, were screwed.

The O line is our biggest issue. Not only does it hold back the running and passing game it also is a large part of why we have had so many kicks blocked. Blocked kicks and poor kick coverage have cost us more games than Henne's blunders. The D is young and will be dominant. Our receivers are solid, when healthy. We need O line, quick receiving RB,receiving TE and of course the obvious, a new OC. Henne may not be the answer but we arent going to sign a great QB in free agency and the draft takes a few years to develop. Add some weapons, a better line, new OC and see whether Henne can get it done. If not we move on to the next great Miami QB.

Yawn. And so ends another fraudulent saviour era in Miami. JJ, Saban, the Trifecta (snickers). Who is the next savior?

No one comes here to win. They come for the weather, a break from coaching college, to retire, etc. Dolphins have now become irrelevant in every NFL market except for in the division. Sad.

Hee hee hee.

Defense wins championships but Offense puts fans in the seats.
Please football gods, please...get Ross to realize that he needs a set of leaders in place that will understand that although winning a SB is great, it isn't everything.
When I go to Miami to watch a game or pay almost 300 bucks a year to Direct TV to watch the Dolphins on NFL ticket I want to do so with the thought that my team will not only win, but be exciting to watch as well.
Bring in Gruden or Martz or anyone with an offensive mind that is grounded in great QB play.
What made Shula great was that he flexed his team from a ground pound to air attack based upon the skills of his QB's. He didn't try to force an old model to work in the modern era.

You really didn't think a MICHIGAN QB could beat a team from OHIO did you?

Obviously I am just as pissed as everyone else but I always try to find the positives. I for one don't think Ireland will be gone he has helped put together one of the now better defenses in the league. Besides how much power did Parcells really give him in the drafts. Sparano could be buzzard bait if he isnt careful. However, Gruden is not the answer. He is way overhyped and will be like JJ was when he took over, just a name. As far as the 1st rd goes there are no qaulity QBs in the numbers we will be picking. With all the holes in the OL it would be smart to trade down and get the 2nd Rounder back. Maybe RT 1st RD.

GRUDEN BUYER BEWARE!

Gruden won the SB with the Bucs with Dungy's personnel.

He might be a good coach but keep him AWAY FROM PERSONNEL DECISIONS. He ran the Bucs into the ground after the SB win.

He ran off McKay to the Falcons who are doing just great.

Instead of Gruden promote NOLAN to Head Coach and bring in McKay as personnel director. Get rid of Ireland.

Guy's I do think it's time for a coaching change,Tony(Fist pump)Sparano has brought in a good core of players but I dont see the fins going more then 8 And 8 with Fist pump as head coach, even next year it will be 8 and 8, And I know what your saying,Cuban not another Regime ,no more rebuilding please, But that dosnt have to be the case, All you have to do is take a look at a certain team wearing puke green to see that a change can be good, Look throughout history there's plenty of instances where a head coach was installed with a half way decent team and he brought them to the promise land, Lets faceit guys Thew Fist pumper is not the guy.... Sorry if I hurt any feelings, I just want to see the fins win a super bowl before I go to the promise land.......

Yeah the drafts have been great. Henne, Pat White, for example.

Not Dez Bryant, JARED ODRICK.

We are back to square one, with only Jake Long and Vontae to show for it.

Gruden can come with his 2 brothers ,one for OC and the other for DC .

Any GM that asks a player if his mother was a prostitute is a SERIOUS red flag. Any GM that consistantly dips into his former team's castoffs is another red flag. And a GM that signs his own mediocre players to long extensions (Crowder, Carey, Fasano) well, 3 strikes & your out.

Swamy, That's another example that says a coaching change wont be bad, and by the way Gruden was canned after 2 8 and 8 seasons, not saying that Chucky is the answer but theres still Dungy,And Cower still out there....

Ross should be ticked.

He opens up his wallet to stock his shelves with he believes are top quality products (free agents, etc.) but it seems he bought counterfeit products from China.

His customers (fans) aren't happy with the quality of the product they're paying to see.

Which leads to black outs and less revenue.

SOMEONE is going to pay for this bill of goods.

Show me a great QB and I'll show you a great coach. Who are the great coaches in this league? All the ones with great QB's.
