« Browns beat Dolphins, 13-10 | Main | Henne remains the starter, but evaluation coming »

Ross skips out on postgame locker room -- again

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano or general manager Jeff Ireland or both have a problem -- and it has nothing to do with what you think.

It doesn't have to do with the fact quarterback Chad Henne is inconsistent and both are tied to Henne as the franchise QB. It has nothing to do with the fact no one in Miami's defensive backfield can be trusted to catch a potential interception delivered directly to the hands. It also has nothing to do with the fact the running game, around which the offense is supposed to be built, has been absent the entire season.

Those problem pale for Miami's top football men compared to this: Owner Stephen Ross is clearly not happy.

And Ross makes the final call on both Sparano's and Ireland's job status.

Ross was at Sunday's 13-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns at Sun Life Stadium. But when the Dolphins lost, he made himself scarce. Unlike other games in which Ross goes from his suite to the team's locker room, Ross skipped the trip on Sunday.

And it was at least the second home loss after which Ross skipped joining his team in the locker room after the game. He wasn't there after the shutout loss to Chicago Nov. 18. So that's two consecutive games after which Ross does not go see his team.

This, by the way, may not seem significant to you. But how the owner's feels about his team is something the football people must be keenly monitoring if they want to enjoy some sort of job security. And it is clear those absences are a sign of disapproval.

It doesn't end there.

Ross is clearly not happy with Miami's 1-5 home record. That record is terrible for any team, but particularly frustrating for a team that has managed a 5-1 record on the road. Clearly, if a team can win on the road, it should be able to manage some wins at home as well. If that isn't happening, it suggest they are under-achieving at home. Certainly, Sunday's loss to the previously 4-7 Cleveland Browns suggests that.

And that is bad because Ross wants his home games to be fun and entertaining and an event. He has spent many resources -- celebrities, concerts, noise, etc ... -- on making home games a bigtime experience.

The problem is all the appetizer and side dish stuff loses its meaning when the main course, the actual football team, is not palatable on its home turf. What's more, the Dolphins are not only seldom successful at home this year, they are boring in the process.

The Dolphins are averaging 16.3 points per game at home this year. They are averaging 19.5 points on the road.

That is not good. And it is especially not good when the owner is so keen on entertainment and showtime and offering people a compelling reason to attend games.

That leads me to the next issue: The Dolphins have two more home games at Sun Life Stadium this season. Never mind whether they win or lose those games against Buffalo (Dec. 19) and Detroit (Dec. 26).

The fact is neither one of those games is sold out at this time. The fact is, barring some unexpected series of events, neither of those games is likely to sell out in time to avert the local television blackout.

That sets a bad tone, folks. Home games that are not sold out make the owner (more) unhappy.

And that is increasingly an issue for folks like Sparano and Ireland.

[I'll be discussing this very topic on my radio show, Armando and the Amigo, today from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. I'm sure the other local morning hosts that read this blog for material will pick up on this, but I would encourage you to listen to me directly so I can share other tidbits on this topic with you. i hope henne is watching brady work.....branch is awesome

lol DB

Hopefully the cameras will be on Rex when his lapband snaps.

DID YOUI GUYS NOTICE THAT BELICHICK NOT EVEN SMILING ,I CALL THAT COACHING .NO FIST BUMP AND NO TALK OF LET'S HAVE FUN

I really hope Ross keeps at least Sporano! he is a good coach. players love playing for him! He didnt pass on Dez! at that time, who would have taken Dez over Marshall??? your a liar if you say you would have!!
we all know Henning is gone next year, this guy is 75% of the reason we are 6-6. i would say bring in McDaniles but, Nolan hates him and Nolan is the reason we have a good De!! him an Wake. Miami has the talent, we need a QB who isnt scared! Can we get a mild vet like Kolb??
Also, Ireland is 50/50 on pick ups! for every Jake Grove we picked up a Cam Wake, Wilford for Bess! Vontae for White!!! he can stay....
FYI, the season isnt over till its over!!

RIght Aloco. Mike Tomlin is like that. Pitt scores and he has no expression afterwards. He acts like he has been there before, nothing new. Sparano acts like he just won the spelling bee.

Bobbyd12,

If Rex Ryan keeps taking both Belichek and Brady's c o c k s so deep down his throat we'll see that lapband snap!!!

DC, SOUND GOOD BUT WHEN YOU ENDED BY SAY ...MEDETRANAIN DELIGHT ,I GOT SCARED .THEY USE THESE WOEDS IN ANY BAD RESTURANT

We all need to realize Henne is really our only viable answer at QB for the rest of this year and next season. Who else is there? Maybe Titans release V. Young. Do we need this head case? Maybe Redskins release D. McNabb. Even if we draft another QB,he wont be a factor next season (and we should draft one). The Fins need a new coaching staff (Jim Harbaugh would be a nice fit) . Most of all we need to fix the O-Line and get a new stable of runningbacks (Thanks for everything but so long Ricky & Ronnie). Never lose faith GO DOLPHINS!!!

Speaking of Sparano and speaking of speaking period. After listening to Sparano's press conferences how would you like to be lost and he's the only one around to try and give you directions?

THAT'S RIGHT DEYDRETER, THESE ARE PRO PLAYERS MAKING MILLION ,THEY DON'T NEED CHEERING FROM THEIR COACH .IT'S THEIR JOB .

DyingB, its a sign of limited intelligence. It really is, and I mean that, I really do.

Guys,

I think I've figured out what our team problem is. You've all heard Sparano press conferences right? So can you just imagine how confused our players are after his pregame speech.

Mr. Ross, please ban Tony Sparano from giving pregame speeches. We'll go 19-0 next season.

Wow. I'm glad I missed the firestorm this weekend. Henne is still the same Qb. that we were all waxing poetic about after the Raider Game. Did anyone really think that he was going to play perfect the rest of the year? This isn't a slam on the guy, but I think it is safe to say we can sum up Henne in 1 word. Inconsistant. On almost every team the quarter back play mirrors the team as a whole. So nobody should be to shoacked that Henne, and the Team laid another egg. It's just who we are. We have all argued it here, but we don't know if Henne will be the long term answer. He is going to get a shot again next year, except he won't have the security blanket of Henning.Or the excuse that he is developing if his play does not improve. This said. Hopefully Henne bounces back from this game, and plays well this next game against the jets. This is the pattern with younger qb's (up and down, can't handle prosperity)

Pats are using Woodhead with absolutely no grease. Thoroughly clogging the Jets tailpipes. Hope thier in a well ventilated area!!!

Darryl Dunphy,

I already stated Henne get placed in far more 3rd and longs and 3rd and forevers than any young qb should be placed in.

JT IS COOKING MEATBALLS ON THE SIDELINE

Pats are f^cking the Jets so hard right now Im starting to get a woodhead.

Is Belichek that good or is it Brady that is so good at making decisions? Or both?

Rex Ryan is going to take out his frustrations on a bent over Mark Sanchez.
And Mark Sanchez will like it.

4 DRIVES=4 SCORES

Jets are beginning to resemble a giant pink and wet p^ssy clothed in green and white panties!!!

LMAO, Jets cant lose by enough tonite. Bellichek has never backed off a beating and i hope he doesnt tonite.

I HAVE A PLAN FOR THE FINS SINCE BRADY WILL BE AROUND FOR ANOTHER 3 YEARS ;

1- HIRE A PIZZA GUY AS HC
2-LET HIM RUN THE TEAM TO THE GROUND FOR 3 YEARS
3-EVERY YEAR WE GET FIRST DRAFT PICK
4-BY YEAR FOUR WE FIRE THE PIZZA GUY AND HIRE A NEW HC
5-WE WIN THE SUPER BOWL

This games beginning to resemble a hard core p o r n movie. The Jets are responding like a first time a n a l!!!

Aloco, thats what we have now, a pizza guy.

Guys for some reason I think we should draft Kellen Moore. I know some of you people will say, "Oh he plays with a weak schedule blah blah blah". But watching the big Boise State games the last couple of years, that kid has "it". He almost won that game against Nebraska, in fact he would have pulled one of the greatest plays in Boise State and possible college football history had that kicker not screwed it all up with the chip shot field goal. I know a QB when I see one, and all of you people begging for Cam Newton are crazy. He's not a NFL level QB. Im sorry but his game style won't work in the NFL. I really hope the Dolphins take a look at Kellen Moore, I know he doesn't have the size, but really, who else could we draft? Andrew Luck might be the best other bet, but he looks like another Leinart. Lets hope for the best, sad that we might be having this discussion.

I GOT THE IDEA FROM DB BY PLAYING POORLY TO GET DRAFT PICKS

Here comes 31pts guys.

GRUDEN JUST SAID.....BRADY AND WELKER SHOWING US A CLINIC

i cant believe we let NE have welker, we never used him right!

ne inttercept or force fumble

hope DB is right, then another 31 for ne in second half....

redsky we did use him right! That is why Beli wanted him, Welker tore them up all the time. It was just a plain stupid trade, thought he was too small.

Well, we are going to be going into an angry nest next week. Both teams coming of an embarrassing loss. We'll see what we got.

Redsky,

Hate to say this but Belichek did us a favor by trading for Welker. Pornstasch wasnt going to match his free agent offer sheet anyway. So instead of getting nothing for him Belichek gave us a gift 2nd rd pick.

For Belichek it was like spotting your baby brother 50yds in a race you know he wont win.

Db.. That is a great point. We are always playing "behind the chains" If there was a stat for down and distance. I'm sure we would be in the bottom half of the league. This puts a lot of pressure on the offense, and gives the advantage to the defense. I'm sure that was part of your point. Now this does not excuse Henne from the stinker on Sunday. He just played poorly. It doesn't help that the recievers played as bad if not worse. Henne missed a lot of throws. But the recievers did a bad job of getting open. Especially getting off the ball. This is something that has been going on with our WR's all year.

Darryl Dunphy,

There are always numerous causes for our huge amount of 3rd and longs.

Ronnie Brown ballerina dancing at line of scrimmage, holding calls, sacks, dropped balls by recievers, untimely use of wildcat, some on Henne himself(some of the inaccuracies), and then there's Dan Henning's outright boneheaded playcalls.

So as you see that's far too much for a veteran qb to deal with let alone expect a 3rd yr qb to deal with and try to look like the coming of a franchise qb. That's what those in rush to crucify Henne do not consider. They have tunnel vision and are not looking at the entire picture.

Darryl Dunphy,

Smart OC's try and get a young qb 2-3 really easy completion throws on his first possession. Just to allow him to build a rythym. I never see Henning do this with Henne.

As an Oc you have to get your young qb easy completion throws to build his rythym and get his confidence going. Then he responds better to what you are asking him to do latter on in the passing game. With young qb's its more so about rythym and confidence than it is with your wiley veterans.

Not sold on putting all the blame on Henning. It's up to the QB to make the reads and the throws. Henne frequently misses throws and reads. Players need to make plays. What if he hit Hartline wide open? Most likely we win that game.

Former Gator and Pats rookie linebacker just did something its taken former Gator and Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder 6yrs to do. He's gotten a pick in his rookie season. It just happened against the Jets.

Henne has a strong arm, but nerve seems to have a feel for the game. He is streaky. He'll torch the field for one or two quarters and then turn into a knucklehead. Or he'll be a knucklehead the entire game like last game. He has been inept in the redzone the entire season, now it appears they've lost confidence in his execution abilities. Yeah, Henning makes some odd calls. I'm just saying I think the problem lies more in Henne than the OC. I know 80% disagree with me, but thats how I see it.

Oh yeah, that rookie lb's name is Brandon Spikes.

its more henne than henning, one of his came when he forced a throw instead of throwing to a wide open fasano twelve yards to the right....ne just picked sanchez in their redzone...

Db- You make good points. But here is is an angle that nobody talks about. Maybe the playcalling is a reflection of Hennes inability to fully comprehend the fll spectrum of the offense. Maybe Henning is handcuffed a bit because Henne still has trouble recognizing defenses, and getting into the right protections. This is a common problem with younger Qb's. That their brain gets in the way of their natural ability. I know this doesn't excuse how we attack on certain downs. But it could explain a little as to why the play calling looks a lot like the Junior Varsity handbook. There is ton the qb has to be able to process before the playbook opens up. Maybe this is why Parcells was fed up with Hennes progress, and 1 reason that the offense has struggled at times

its over johnny. its over.

how come our guys cant make those picks and hold on to them

PATS........... 231
JETS.............. 3

td ne!!!! welker

lol aloco

sad this is a rebuilding year for the pats

How are we going to catch up to NE? They have twice as many picks as we do and are already way ahead of us. The Jets will fade away after this season.

WE NEED A REAL QBBBBBBBBBBBBBB

THEN WE DON'T NEED TO POST AS MUCH TALKING LIKE WOMEN ALL DAY LONG .

ESPN is blowing it, they should have one camera showing Rex's face the whole time. Anybody think we'll beat the Jets next week?

Sanchez has a lot more talent around him than Henne, a more creative OC, the best O-line in the NFL with a great running game and he looks like crap!!!! I think it's way too early to give up on Henne, so unless we can draft one of the top QBs coming out, the Fins should get a seasoned FA vet to compete with Henne and lets see what happens. A new OC is a must! Saw Henning up close in Carolina where he turned a team favored to reach the Super Bowl into an ultra-conservative mess that barely scored points. I don't trust the guy's judgment and playcalling!!!

Ross CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH! I'm sure he ran from the cameras because he doesn't have a legitimate explanation for his failure. We might not have team to take us to the promiseland but one thing for sure, we have the players who are fully capable of scoring more than 16 pts a game. We don't even attempt to confuse the defense. No flea flicker, hook n latter, notta, zip, zilch....Henning's playcalls mirror our offense performance!
Perhaps Ross should consult with his stockholders.....that seemed to be his priority earlier in the year.
btw: all those Bills fans who added their input better look at AFC East standings! Jets fans we expect that from you because we know you are delirious in beleiving you are having a successful season.

Another Sanchez pick.... told you he sucks!!! J-E-T-S BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!

Jets = total humiliation
This is even worse than our ST meltdown against the Pats.

lol jets suck sanchez cant play in cold weather must bench him now 2 int

We need a dynamic TE.... the Pats have 2 and the Jets as well!!!! A good TE is a young QB's best friend!!!
