« Browns beat Dolphins, 13-10 | Main | Henne remains the starter, but evaluation coming »

Ross skips out on postgame locker room -- again

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano or general manager Jeff Ireland or both have a problem -- and it has nothing to do with what you think.

It doesn't have to do with the fact quarterback Chad Henne is inconsistent and both are tied to Henne as the franchise QB. It has nothing to do with the fact no one in Miami's defensive backfield can be trusted to catch a potential interception delivered directly to the hands. It also has nothing to do with the fact the running game, around which the offense is supposed to be built, has been absent the entire season.

Those problem pale for Miami's top football men compared to this: Owner Stephen Ross is clearly not happy.

And Ross makes the final call on both Sparano's and Ireland's job status.

Ross was at Sunday's 13-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns at Sun Life Stadium. But when the Dolphins lost, he made himself scarce. Unlike other games in which Ross goes from his suite to the team's locker room, Ross skipped the trip on Sunday.

And it was at least the second home loss after which Ross skipped joining his team in the locker room after the game. He wasn't there after the shutout loss to Chicago Nov. 18. So that's two consecutive games after which Ross does not go see his team.

This, by the way, may not seem significant to you. But how the owner's feels about his team is something the football people must be keenly monitoring if they want to enjoy some sort of job security. And it is clear those absences are a sign of disapproval.

It doesn't end there.

Ross is clearly not happy with Miami's 1-5 home record. That record is terrible for any team, but particularly frustrating for a team that has managed a 5-1 record on the road. Clearly, if a team can win on the road, it should be able to manage some wins at home as well. If that isn't happening, it suggest they are under-achieving at home. Certainly, Sunday's loss to the previously 4-7 Cleveland Browns suggests that.

And that is bad because Ross wants his home games to be fun and entertaining and an event. He has spent many resources -- celebrities, concerts, noise, etc ... -- on making home games a bigtime experience.

The problem is all the appetizer and side dish stuff loses its meaning when the main course, the actual football team, is not palatable on its home turf. What's more, the Dolphins are not only seldom successful at home this year, they are boring in the process.

The Dolphins are averaging 16.3 points per game at home this year. They are averaging 19.5 points on the road.

That is not good. And it is especially not good when the owner is so keen on entertainment and showtime and offering people a compelling reason to attend games.

That leads me to the next issue: The Dolphins have two more home games at Sun Life Stadium this season. Never mind whether they win or lose those games against Buffalo (Dec. 19) and Detroit (Dec. 26).

The fact is neither one of those games is sold out at this time. The fact is, barring some unexpected series of events, neither of those games is likely to sell out in time to avert the local television blackout.

That sets a bad tone, folks. Home games that are not sold out make the owner (more) unhappy.

And that is increasingly an issue for folks like Sparano and Ireland.

If we brought Josh McDaniels in as OC it would most likely be under stipulations Marshall must go. I just dont see Josh McDaniels accepting a OC position in Miami with Marshall or Nolan on the team.

So please lets rule out all Josh McDaniels to Miami talk. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeze.........

ALoco,

Its all over espn right now too.

Stephen Ross:

Hello Josh, Stephen Ross Miami Dolphins. Sorry to hear about the bad news, buddy.

Josh McDaniels:

Before you go any further Mr. Ross, as long as Brandon's there forget about it.

Stephen Ross:

Let me get back to you on that ok Josh?

Mike Nolan is going to be looked at for HC at Denver

My ass has finally healed. Any Jets fans wanna give this bottom a good hard one?

I hope not loseing nolan would be a huge loss for the fins

Spygate!

Well, he is a Bill Belicheat disciple.

Josh is thinking: I'm fired? Last time it only cost me a draft pick. Heck, they even let us keep our rings.....................

Stephen Ross is going to run the Miami Dolphins franchise into the ground. He might be the worst owner of any professional sports team.

Clearly, Tony Sparano is a good coach. He's not the problem.

Nolan and Marshall are smiling ear to ear right now.

Belicheats legacy is unfolding before our very eyes.

And the CHEAT goes on........................

JOSH IS KNOWN FOR HIS FIST PUMP ,I REMEMBER LAST YEAR WHEN HE WON VS NEW ENGLAND IN BOSTON AND AFTER THE GAME HE FIST PUMP BIG TIME AND NOW HE' HISTORY .

Mike Nolan is going to be looked at for HC at Denver

Boulder,

That's what I would be worried about after this season. If it wasn't for McDaniels, Nolan would probably be in Denver right now.

This defense has kept us in many games this year. Would hate to lose him.

NOW THE DOORS ARE WIDE OPEN TO SEND MARSHALL BACK TO DENVER

I don't want us to hire Josh unless we can sign T.O., Randy Moss, Vincent Jackson.............oh yeah and Shawn Merriman too!

DB ,

CAN WE SEND MARSHALL BACK AND GET OUR 2 DRAFT PICKS BACK ?

ALoco,

Can only return Marshall and get our picks back if Ireland got them agreeing to that on video tape.

Aloco,

Marshall back to Denever?

Couldn't we just send them Crowder?

First Phillips now McDaniels. 2 HCs fired during the season. Hmmm, I see a trend here.

The Dolphins don't need to make tons of totally implausible trades or hire totally implausible coaches or GM's. They need to find a QB who's capable of leading scoring drives on a consistent basis, like they had in 2008 when they won 11 games and made the playoffs. Right now, they have the worst QB in the division and maybe the conference. Even a healthy Pennington could have Miami at 8 wins by now; for all his flaws the guy delivered W's and got the offense in the end zone on occasion.

While it truly sucks that the Dolphins need to waste more time & more resources on looking for a QB yet again, there's no way you can go into 2011 with Henne and a few re-treads at QB. Maybe Henne comes out next year and sets the world on fire; that'd be swell but you certainly can't count on that happening based on what he's shown so far.

cocoa,

Don't forget Childress.

I don't want us to just blindly follow any trends.

Maybe we can "test the waters" by firing Henning first!

ODIN, WE SEND THEM ;

CROWDER
FASANO
AND WE GET OUR PICKS BACK

sure it is. i say it time after time after time. iam not a supporter of henne, never will be, don't want to be. hopefully ross will grow some balls and get rid of the rest of the garbage.

Yeah, we don't want to waste any time trying to develop another Quarterback.

Can you imaging having to give a guy an entire season to develop-SHEESH!

I mean, if they don't come out of their Momma's twats reading defenses and throwing TD's who needs them.

I want to draft a quarterback that can catch the pass, call the play and handoff to himself. Oh yeah and block to. My quarterback has to be a good blocker because my expert ofeensive coordinator calls those great pass playe where you only send out one guy on a pattern. I mean Marino could make the hall of fame with Vernon Carey, Anthony Fasano, Dan Henning and Ted Ginn.

I am so smart! I can even pretend to be a griesebag and then talk to myself about it. Look at me go everybody, look at me GO!

that's too much information.

We very well may lose Nolan now. I say flush Sparano and promote Nolan, can't let him get away. Best coach on this staff in a very long time.

deytreder ,

YOU SAY GET NOLAN as HC AND BEFORE LONG THE KNIVES WILL BE OUT AT NO TIME .

odinseye,

I agree with your take on the whole Dolphin situation. We have been close in almost every game this year. If our qb play was a little better, we would be in the thick of the playoff race. Why blow the whole thing up?

I was hoping Henne would be the guy. Who knows...maybe some real competition from a veteran qb next year will light a fire. Not sure who will be available. Brees sure elevated his game after the Chargers brought in Rivers. Not saying it would happen with Henne, but real competition couldn't hurt.

Kitna might have gotten us into the playoffs this year, lol.

aloco, he brings the heat on himself. someone who runs their mouth about they are a starting qb in this league and not a backup, then goes out there and looks like a fool, yeah he brings it on himself!

Ireland has to go. Henning has to go. Sparano has to go. And last but not least, Henne has to go. Start Thigpen and lose to rest of games and get a better draft pick. Go Fins in 2011!

Aloco the knives are already out.

Why do we need a better draft pick?

You guys would want to use it on a quarterback. Then you would want to cut the guy two days into rookie camp.

I got a great shortcut. Lets fire everybody, cut everybody, bring in a bunch of has beens and give them three more years to develop something none of us will wait half a season for.

No wonder your wives and girlfriends cheat on you imbeciles!

The man always looking for a shortcut, ALWAYS cuts himself short.

I miss the Robbie Family. We had good teams when they owned the team. Please help us Stephen Ross. Be a great owner and get us to the playoffs as a wild card at least. That would be an awesome Christmas present for next year. And p.s. hire new draft experts. Because ours suck! Thank you.

THE RB COACH WILL BE THE NEW VICTIM HC FOR THE BRONCOS

hopefully ross will follow this trend. if you are the owner then take control, stop letting these parcells rejects run the show.

SEEMS NO ONE WANTED THE JOB AS INTERM COACH SO THE OWNER GAVE TO THE RB COACH FOR THE LAST 4 GAMES OF THE SEASON .

i would even rather vince young over henne.

Odin, you're right, I did forget about Childress, that's 3 so far.....is that some sort of record?

I wonder why we use so much play action and we can even get a 100 yard rusher?! Bad play calling and shame on Henne for not using his audibles. The guy hurries when he doesn't need to and hold the ball when he's pressured. Bad QB play equals Dolphin fans waiting for the draft each and every year.

I LOVE FRIED WHITING FISH . THE ONLY FISH WHEN YOU FRY WHOLE YOU CAN EAT THE WHOLE THING NOT WORRY ABOUT BONES .

Well since we didn't get Matt Ryan, maybe we can make up for it by bringing back Ryan Leaf AND Ryan Mallet.

Then again, Mallet couldn't even beat out the second stringer at Michigan.

Oh well, I'd take Ryan Leaf over Leaf Garret!

Head coaches are motivated to fail badly. They get fired and still get paid. Josh will get paid for the next two years. Shanahan is still getting paid by the Broncos and of course the Skins. Denver will be paying 3 coaches salaries for the next two years. Well, thats one problem we don't have.

Aloco, ever try speckled trout? Fresh, (only a few hours out of the water) bake, lemon juice and salt. Mmmmm, good.

YEA I DID cocajoe. whole fish no thing like it .

Hilarious how Henne's personal ball-washers still want to believe, even though his own coach benched him this very season for ineffective and all-around crappy play. Sure, maybe after a few more seasons of leading the offense to several FG drives a game he'll "develop" all of a sudden and be the next Big Thing. Third year in the league, 24 TD's to 29 picks. 12 & 15 through 12 games this year. Joey Harrington could do that. They go into 2011 believing in Henne as a starter, Sparano might as well pack his bags and leave them near his office door because they'll be going nowhere fast again.

"I'm deeply disappointed in Chad Henne", Bill Parcells, September 2010

Number one - I'M A HUGE SPARANO FAN, LET THE COACH DO HIS WORK. GIVE HIM SOME TIME HE'S THE BEST COACH WE'VE HAD SINCE SHULA. Number two - STAR STRUCK OWNER STEPHEN ROSS IS NOT ABOUT FANS HE WOULD RATHER HAVE MIKE DESS TO DO ALL THE FAN BASE FOR HIM. TO ME THAT IS A VERY VERY POOR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE FANS. Number three - AT LEAST MR.HUIZENGA MADE TIME FOR THE DOLPHIN FANS AND NOT HAVING SOMEONE ELSE DO THE WORK. MISS YOU MR. HUIZENGA MY FRIEND. SINCESHULA.

i love it. ross is getting pissed and this could lead to the gm and coaching change. its def what we need, these guys are losing and are boring in the process. nobody wants a staff that just tries to keep it close and hope luck wins it in the end. we should finish 7-9 so have a solid pick and ross can fire these clowns.

Go Pats - beat the Jets!
After that the Pats can go to h3ll.

Earl,

You saw the TD to int ratio list of the hall of famers earlier just like everyone else.

Henne was right there with all of them. What are you comprehensionally challenged.

Say what you want, Ross is Michigan alumni and he and I love Henne clean balls and all.

He'll be starting for us next year and you'll still be comprhensionally challenged.

SAY, you ain't related to Dan Henning are you? You sound just as..................

Nothing against Jake Long, but Matt Ryan should of been the pick. That was the first mistake this regime made, and many others followed year in and year out.

pats will def bury the jets tonight. jets have lucked out all season, they will lose tonight and at pit and at chicago. this team wont go anywhere in the playoffs. sad to say the pats will get another sb ring this year

finman - how can you say Sparano is the best coach we've had in some time? The team has been worse each successive year with him. Now, he may be the most likable coach we've had in awhile, but hasn't been superior in results to the others.

Personally, I like the guy, but I happen to think he is the dumbest coach we've ever had. He is nowhere on par with his peers in terms of intellect.

We need another pass rusher, cause aside from Wake, we suck at rushing the passer. We obviously need a QB, we need to get younger at the RB position, we need a SS who can cover a TE once in a while, CB is also an area that has to improve, Davis is having a decent year but Sean Smith sucks. The jury is still out on Chris Clemons. The interior o-line sucks pretty bad. A lot of work ahead guys.

only thing this staff ever did was the first year when they went 11-5, and we all know that was because of the easiest schedule ever. got hammered in the first rd. we need a new staff, one that has done it for a long time. not another first time guy. cowher would be awesome but i dont see that happeneing but u never know cause carl peterson is looming

Earl, can I stick my tongue up your ass? I will give you a great rim job

Well there is not much to say that already hasn't been said, or debated about what happened yesterday.
If any of you make it Vegas check out the sports book at the Palazzo(Venetian) It's a stadium style arena with personal couches, servers, "luxury boxes" betting windows, and a huge HD big screen the size of a movie theater. AWESOME.. If Nolan Carrol makes that pick six I hit one of my parlays but nooooooo!

Tom Brady did cut his hair short.

Mr Ireland...

Let's just say for the sake of argument that Dez Bryant's mom was a ho. Who the heck cares? The Cowboys got themselves a great punt returner and a future star of a WR, wouldn't of that solve 2 needs for this team? 2 needs such as a punt returner, (we don't have one) and someone to play with Marshall? You think Marshall would be double and triple covered if Bryant was on the field? Probably not. But let's get a DL because his mom might be a ho. Brilliant.
