Rex Ryan: Dolphins offense loaded

I had to go pick myself off the floor before I could get around to posting this so please forgive the delay. New York Jets coach Rex Ryan was just on a conference call with the South Florida media and he was routinely interesting. The guy simply has a compelling way of grabbing and keeping one's attention.

But ...

Sometimes Ryan shoots past the the line separating saying things that are interesting and saying things that are just crazy. He was clearly in crazy territory today when he called the Dolphins offense "outstanding" and "loaded."

"The Miami offense is far from being poor," Ryan said. "That's an outstanding offense. You have two great running backs, a young quarterback that always plays great against us, for some reason. I was hoping they'd bench him for our game. To be honest with you, you have the big wide out, Brandon Marshall.

"This is a team that's loaded."

Huh?

To be real with you, please understand the Dolphins are ranked No. 29 in the NFL in points per game. Some fans and media (me included) believe offensive coordinator Dan Henning is not doing a good job. And quarterback Chad Henne was benched earlier this season, if only for three plays.

And Ryan expects us to believe he believes they're good? C'mon, man!

If Ryan truly believes the Dolphins offense is loaded then he must think the coaching staff is doing a terrible job with that talent because the results have been poor. Ryan doesn't thinnk Miami is terribly coached. He said as much.

So, he was just blowing smoke, right?

To his credit, Ryan turned off his coachspeak filter later in the session when he was talking about his own defense. In fact, he was extremely hard on his No. 8-ranked defense.

"We have to play better, there's no question about that," Ryan said. "We have to tackle better. We're not making any plays. We're not getting any interceptions. We're just out there. It doesn't seem like we've been as successful. I think we're eighth in th league in defense which is poor for our standards. We have to get it going better. Our communication hasn't been great ..."

So it sounds like the Miami offense is poised to pummel the Jets defense, right coach?

"... this is a big challenge this week," Ryan said, "but I think our guys will respond, I really do."

On paper we are loaded..At RB,and big time WR. Our defense is rank 4th..We are like the Jets..at RB and WR, well they have the edge on WR, but our defense is better in the rankings..We both have Qb on their second year, the difference coaching!!Executing plays better..Between Sanchez and Henne nothing they both make the same mistakes..

the difference between sanchez and henne is 3 more wins and 3 less losses, and henne makes mistakes far more often than sanchez.

Gruden's offenses his last few years in Tampa ranked near the bottom in nearly every category. His offensive "genius" reputation only lasted as long as he had the players to get things done.

The guy just doesn't excite me at all and I think people are hot for him just because they see him on tv a lot. The Bucs WERE a total shambles when he left--that's a fact.

IF a change occurs (and I doubt it will) I'd much rather see the team go after a young assistant on their way up. Leslie Frazier type (who is going to be hired by somebody, guaranteed)

Darryl great point. Guys always say it was Dungy's team but EXACTLY what you said he had Super Bowl caliber teams in Oakland. If anyone remembers Oakland was horrible before he got there and horrible every year but the following year after he left. He made Rich Gannon a league MVP and Brad Johnson a Super Bowl winning QB.

You guys are nuts that don't see Grudens worth and offensive expertise!

Darryl don't lose hope of Sparano getting canned. The Jets are going to want to revenge and another embarrassing loss for this team and they might quit on Sparano. Biffalo is playing with heart and way better then a dead Dolphins team and Detroit plays hard as well. That was once Sparano's savior that his guys play hard for him but 2 years now of nothing but REGRESSING for this organization the writing should be on the walls for Sparano.

Andy in NJ- I don't know if you remember this but when Gruden went to the Bucs, it was via a trade..kind of. The Bucs lost their first round picks in 2002, 2003 and their second round picks in 2003, 2004. They also had a ton of Salary cap problems that stemmed from before the Gruden era. A mess Dungy left behind. People fail to talk about that when speaking of Grudens so called failure in Tampa Bay. They had some losing seasons, but they also had a 12 win year with Brian Griese, and Chris Simms. And another playoff team that shut it down that last month that lost to the Giant team that won the Super Bowl. I'm almost positive the qb on that team was Trent Dilfer. He gets a ton out of his quarterbacks, this cannot be argued.

Sparano has a higher winning percentage right now than Gruden did over his tenure with the Buccaneers (57-55).

The guy is a .500 coach, folks, sorry.

JON GRUDEN IS IN THE NEWS AGAIN ,THIS TIME FOR THE FLORIDA HEAD COACH SPOT SINCE URBAN MAYER STEPPING DOWN ,THE FL JOB IS WAY A BETTER JOB THAN THE UM

Jim,

You are going to sit there and tell me he didn't coach a career back up into an MVP of the league in Rich Gannon? He didn't ressurrect Oakland as a franchise? He won a Super Bowl with Brad Johnson, Charlie Garner and Michael Pittman, Ken Dilger, Joe Jervicious, Keenan McCardell who was way past his prime. These aren't exactly names going to Canton.

He failed at drafting players not coaching them up. The Bucs blew everyone in the playoffs out that year because he out coached everyone. The Bucs blew the 49ers (Steve Mariucci) out like 30-10 and bombed the Eagles in Philly (Andy Reid) by double digits and we all remember how he out coached and out classed Callahan in the SB. None of them coaches were even in Grudens league!

If a change is to be made, the LAST people Ross should listen to is the fans.

It was fan demands that largely led to JJ and Saban being hired.

Change if you must, Mr. Ross, but talk to actual football people in doing so.

Darryl D,

I do remember that Oakland had to give compensation to Tampa Bay. I do think Gruden is a great offensive mind but not a great talent evaluator when it comes to the draft.

I guess my point is I want Gruden as a head coach and prefer a GM but every great coach learns from their mistakes and even if Gruden was given full control I would be in favor of it. I think he is that good of a COACH and it has nothing to do with him being on TV.

neither is parcells or ireland or sparano for that matter.

LOL dolphin77. I know on the surface it seems they didn't do much for Miami but they did make a few hits as well as misses. I think they laid a good but not great foundation. It can be very hard to find a dominant Left Tackle and Miami did go Long over Matt Ryan but it is what it is. Long is still a great player. Brandon Marshall is a great WR he is having a tough time holding the ball but the limited opportunities he has had to make up for his drops in the red zone is appalling. Bess is a great slot receiver (not starter), a bull dozer FB in Polite and a very good kicker. Henne can't hit the ocean from the wet sand and Henning well enough said. On D they have some decent linemen in Starks who is a DE not a NT, Langford and possibly Odrick but who knows with him. Cam Wake is a player coaches have to game plan for. Vontae although only 1 int this year has QB's not throwing at him as much so that stat is a little over rated on the surface. Dansby has been very good as well. The cupboard isn't completely dry like it was before they got here. They had a tough job but someone else needs to come in and ADD some real play makers and play makers and SPEED!

This team is stale and needs an infusion of speed and talent and a new direction.

There is a great story about Kieth Fitzhugh. He is the kid that passed up a chance to sign with the jets this week to keep his job as a train conductor so he could care for his ailing father. His job as train conductor pays well, but nothing like what a contract with the jets would have paid. He was asked if he regrets passing up a chance to play with the jets and perhaps being on a team that has a chance to go to the Super Bowl. He answered that being able to care for his parents is better then playing in the NFL, or any Super Bowl. This is a good man, and a great story.

yes, definitely speed.

Lombardi is in my Head. Thankyou.

He passed up a job for a few weeks, not any long term contract. Only a fool would give up the only job they have to care for their family for a few weeks of glory and not all that much money.

The rap on Gruden is that the players and staff hated him. I'm not a Sparano fan, but at least the team likes playing for him, you need that. I don't want to see Gruden or Cowher. I'd rather see Jeff Fischer here, maybe lure Mike Martz or Norv Turner(he'll be fired) as an OC.

My guess is that if the team finishes the season strong, Ireland and Sparano are back for another year. If they really fold, we'll see whether or not Ross has any balls.

Hard to deal with a capricious Boss, isn't it? At the same time, now he's being scrutinized by many, who have no Boss.

FUNNY TRUE STORY .....WHEN CHAD.P HAD HIS INJURE COMES BACK ON THAT GAME AFTER 2 MINUTES ,HE WENT TO R.BROWN AND SAID TO HIM CAN YOU PULL ON THAHT SHOULDER ?

R.BROWN ANSWERED , (( NO WAY I AM NOT GOING TO TOUCH THIS SHOULDER ))...

The question is: will Ross dump Sparano if we go 8-8?

The coaching staff isn't the real problem: Chad Henne is. He stinks, he couldn't move the offense if he had a heavy-duty forklift and a semi trailer. Sparano admitted as much when he realized he had to bench him; unfortunately his replacement was injured immediately so there was little choice but to play him. Henne has been awful and he's shown no signs that he's developing into anything special. The guy has been in the league for three years now and he still plays like a frightened rookie. With a halfway decent QB the Dolphins could be 8-4 or even 9-3 by now.

NO NEED TO DUMB SPARANO EVEN IF HE WANTS OUT OF MIAMI HIMSELF AS REPORTED .WITHOUT A HELP FROM A RWAL QB THE FINS WILL FIND IT TOUGH TO GET INTO THE PLAYOFFS

Aloco,What the Deuce are you babbling about????????

CAN SOME ONE TRANSLATE THIS QUOTE TO ME ....SAPARANO SAID IN NY >(( OUR BACKS ARE AGAINST THE WALL ,BUT WE ARE INSIDE THE WALL )) END OF QOUTE .

CUBAN, WAKE UP THE EMPRESS AND LET HER TRANSLATE THID QOUTE FOR ME OR YOU .

Was'nt that from pink floyds "The Wall"????

Aloco, I don't know if a real QB is going to be available. We won't have a top ten pick. The reality is we probably have to give Henne one more year to show us something. If not, then we pull out all the stops to draft a #1 QB.

cefablohof,

Yeah Henne just doesn't have it anymore. Not like he did way back two and three weeks agao.

Way back then he could come off then bench and win games. I remember one time, a long time ago, he played a flawless game. I think it was against some team called Oakland. He led the team to heavy duty forklift like 31 points, SIGH!

Boy, those were the good ole days.

ROTFLMAO, this blog is getting too stupid to even read anymore.

Fire, sporano-stop the chem trails, trade brandon marshall, draft a quarterback of trade for Kolb.

Oh wait, scratch that last one. Even if we drafted the second coming of Dan Marino, Davis lee would teach him how to run off the field for the wildcat and Henning would ruin his career. That reminds me, who was that great QB playing for Hennings back before the last time he was fired?

DiiR!

NO ,DEYTERED ,....WE DRAFT THE QB NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

By the end of the Play probably half the Team will be asleep in their seats.

The end of the Great Fortunes has come and gone.

Pardon me(I'm writing just like Armando). The Era of the Great Fortunes has come and gone.

U people must be HIGH if you think getting rid of Henne is the answer!! He will need another year of work before we should decide if he's our man. Did you see the stats on last nites blog. Shaggy had the best stats on the leagues best QB's and Henne has the same #TD/INT ratio as greats like Aikman and Elway Griese and Manning and Farve thru 26 games.. Not to many ever started with better numbers.. Lets take a Timeout and Pray we get better at OL next season where we can run and Henne will be fine!! I still would like Cowher in FLA. though??

odin, oakland is not exactly a winning team, can we be SOOO impressed with his performance? What about Henne's entire body of work this season? Is it really 100% the OC's fault? He has been inept in the redzone the entire season, that as well can't be all on the OC. A QB has to find a way to make plays, don't you think? And what about that Cleveland game, must have been his very worst performance as a pro. When his back was to the wall, and we needed a drive, a do or die win, he got nothing done. 3 pics. Not encouraging.

Oscar, do you have any cats at home ?????

We need to draft a quarterback EVERY MOTHER FREAKING YEAR.

I'll bet we draft one this year.

I'll also bet it won't be in the 1st or 3rd round.

I would also try to get a decent vet in Free Agency if at all possible.

You GO Aloco!!!!

No, but my neighbor does. And Lombardi said this, zzz, and Lombardi said that, zzzzzz, .....

- Tony, did you like the Play? - Hmm, well, you know(honestly), I don't remember.

Huh?

Usually, in Internet, when you perceive some hostility you can find out why. Learn it, People.

oscar, do you have any dogs ?

And you guys thought Internet was a toy. You better be prepared to be scrutinized every minute, every second of your Life(you too, Mr. Ross).

It can be done. Sure.

Yes, one, and his name is Charly(as in the movie, you know).

i just saw ted GINN ON YOUTUBE ,how can we trade that guy ?

cHAD hENNING

He is saying that because he knows the Fins are going to be fired up and pissed after last weeks pathetic loss to the Browns.
Henne needs to play A LOT better and Henning's play calling has been horrible this year and should be fired. Too old, too conservative, and too predictable.

deytreder,

I just posted a novel back to you and the Cuck suckers that run this freaking blog wouldn't let it through.

Henne's body of work has essentially been a rookie starting for a season. Another idiot earlier said he's been in the league 3 years. People make these stupid comments, mix in some inaccurate info just to bolster their even STOOPIDER shyt.

To answer your question/statement, yeah Hennings can be blamed for about 90% of our offensive problems in the red zone.

In 12 games this season, when we cross the 35 yard line, Hennings uses 4 receivers LESS than 15% of the time. These aren't wide receivers either. One is always a running back, fullback or TE. His stats for using 3 receivers in these situations is only slightly better.

Once in the red zone, he has repeatedly went to max protect sending ONLY Marshall on a route. He does this repeatedly, knowing Marshall is routinely double teamed in the red zone. Explain that. Does that make any sense to you?

In a two score game with less than 3 minutes left, Sporano blows our time outs and Henning uses a FULLBACK AND A RUNNING BACK in our two minute spread offense. A FULL BACK AND A RUNNING BACK in our spread offense. How is a young inexperienced quarterback supposed to deal with that? He has to beat the defense and his own offensive coordinator. Audibles are limited. They're even more limited by personnel packages. How is a young quarterback supposed to shine in the middle of this kind of OBVIOUS retardation. A FULL BACK and A RUNNING BACK in the SUPPOSED two minute spread offense.

That's not to mention all the runs on third and 18, 3rd and 8 and all the other, lets play for a field goal garbage. In todays passing NFL, the field goal strategy of Sporano and Henning doesn't cut it.

I do all kinds of breakdowns on quarter, down and distance and field position. Hennings play calls can barely compare to the worst offensive teams in the league.

His offensive is so inept, that opposing defenses can actually call out our receivers routes before the snap of the ball. Belicheat and McDaniels wouldn't even waste tape illegally filming Dan Hennings pitiful offensive system. There's no NEED!

I've done the statistical analysis on Hennings. I've studied his play calls vs. down and distance. It wouldn't matter if we had Mannings and Vicks inbred son playing quarterback here.

Yeah, lets stick with Hennings and cut Henne! The ignorance I see on this blog sometimes rivals ONLY DAN HENNINGS OFFENSE and DAN HENNINGS OFFENSIVE PLAY CALLS!

Who ever decides what gets through and what doesn't, I'm going to repost this a couple times to thank you for causing me to waste 15 minutes on a my novel.

We should create an annual Olivadotti Award for the lamest Dolphin of the season. The unanimous choice for this inaugural award goes to Dan Henning. Congratulations, sir! Now pick up your award, pink slip and last paycheck on the way out.

I was thinking we need to fire Hennings now and promote David Lee as the interim OC. I thought this would help us get a head start on next season.

This was a terrible oversight on my part. I admit it. I was totally wrong.

I still think we need to fire Henning and promote Lee just for the sake of the players and us fans. But as far as this being a head start, I was being completely ignorant.

As much as Henning has regressed, or for as much as his senility has advanced(depending on whether you're a half full of half empty type), the bad play calls pale in comparison to the offensive system as a whole.

I was ignorant in thinking it was just the play calling as opposed to the entire system.

Whether it was Pennington, Henne or Thigpen, when is the last time anyone can remember us running an effective two minute offense?

What about even a marginally successful spread attack?

How about the no huddle?

Seriously, think about those last three questions. Unfortunately, the most dynamic offense this team has had to offer since Parcells and Hennings arrival has been the retreaded 1919 single wing, or better known as the wild fluke. This wasn't even introduced as an innovation so much as it was a need in desperation. Even Pennington couldn't get it done in this Henning offense. As good as everyone thought he was here, the sad truth is we rode the wild fluke to the AFC East championship.

You can hide your heads in the sands of denial all you want, the cold, hard facts are that not even Pennington could get it done under Hennings watch. The only success we could muster was when we could run the ball 75% of the time out of the "FLUKE"!

Pennington couldn't make Hennings archaic and absurd offense work. Thiggy couldn't make Hennings senility work, yet Henne should be able to come in as a rookie starter and defeat opposing teams as well as his own offensive coordinator?

You take away the success of David Lee's wild fluke and what you have left is the sum of Dan Hennings body of work since "landing" here in Miami. To be more accurate I should say, since Dan Henning was fired by Carolina.

Wild fluke, wildcat, Pennington, Henne, none of it matters as long as Hennings is sitting in that press box. It doesn't matter if a young Joe Freaking Montana was here. Until we get a sane offensive coordinator with a slightly coherent system and a game plan, no quarterback in the WORLD will win much in MIAMI!

Seriously, take away Ronnie and Rickys heroics in David Lee's wildfluke and tell me what has Hennings managed to accomplish?

The wildfluke was an early testament to Hennings over the hill inadequacies! We wouldn't have even needed the wildfluke if Henning was doing his job.

Odin,

Great novel.

Wish I could jump to the last chapter to see how this whole thing finishes.

Odin - just came back and saw this now. It's late, so I won't respond with a novel. In a nutshell, while I agree the play calls have often been questionable, at times I think they are so conservative because they don't trust Henne, because Henne has just failed too often in certain situations. At the same time, I'm not discounting your points. I am by nature the devils advocate. So with that in mind, not that I am really trying to defend the OC, but I can see some pretzel logic in some of those 'ridiculous' calls. For example, 3rd and long and they go wild cat. Sure, everyone thinks What the Fuh??? On the other hand, just maybe they want to see how well the WC formation works when the D is totally geared towards pass protection. Why not try it? My other take is simply this, strictly regarding the offense...what has changed since the last two years when we had a great running attack freeing up the passing game? The ONLY thing that has changes is the interior oline, and they are not cutting it. All's I want to say is that I don't think Henning has suddenly gone senile, out of touch with todays offenses, or any of that poppycock. I can't buy it. He sees more than any of us watching film. Not saying he is totally exempt by any means, but to suggest he is 80% of the problem as well I reject. People say he was fired previously, yeah so was Belicheck, so was Cameron who has his Ravens playing pretty good offense. Henne is an enigma. I was 100% behind him, and thought for sure he'd blow the shorts off Sanchez this season. Instead, he really has regressed, been disappointing. And that cleveland MUST win game, he just didn't seem to have the 'karma' to carry the team on his shoulders and MAKE something happen. I can see giving him one more year, fine, but regardless of the OC, injuries and whatever, he hasn't given us a whole lot of cause for optimism this year. (Ok, so I wrote a novel!)

Dammit, i thought rex spoke the complete truth no matter who gets hurt. Thats a load of BS and more full of it than he already was, I wouldnt trust this offense in the arena football league right now. And thats being kind!!!!

odin you are killing me with the multiple posts, lol! as ive said before, let henne sink or swim the rest of the season, but i would also like no huddle and shotgun.....im keeping it short, youve said enough!

UT,

Don't skip to the last chapter!

You'll miss out on all my drunken rantings and ravings.

You wouldn't want to do that would ya?
