Ross to consider many things, including $$$$$

The Miami Dolphins are not a disaster. Let's get that clear right from the top.

The team was a disaster three years ago when Bill Parcells was hired and he, in turn, hired general manager Jeff Ireland and head coach Tony Sparano. In the last three years, Miami hasn't won a championship, but neither has is it become a stagnant organization.

The Dolphins are probably four or five starters from being a Super Bowl contender -- a quarterback, a running back, someone in the defensive backfield that is a dynamic playmaker, a speed receiver, and probably a really good interior offensive lineman.

[UPDATE: Some of you are noting that four or five starters is a lot to ask. Really? Miami's defense this year has a new NT, SOLB, MILB, WOLB, and FS. It would be five new starters if first round pick Jared Odrick had not been injured, which would have put him at RDE and Starks a first-time starter at NT. And the defense went from tied for 25th in the NFL in points allowed to tied for No. 9 currently. Miami's offense is 29th in the NFL in points scored now.]

It is against that backdrop that owner Stephen Ross will decide in the next couple of weeks whether to retain Ireland and Sparano or cut ties and search for a "star" head coach. A "star" coach, by the way, almost certainly comes with his own choice for a general manager, which is why Ireland is in play in this scenario, and his own staff.

Ross would fire Sparano only if he believes he can improve the situation with that star coach, I'm told by one person familiar with the owner's thinking.

Why?

Because, at its roots, this decision on a coach is a money decision. Ross hates losing, which is good reason enough, but beyond that, he is bitterly disappointed his grand plan to make Dolphins home games an experience and an event has been spoiled by the fact Miami finished 1-7 at home this year.

It doesn't matter how many concerts, celebrities and face-painters you have at the stadium on game days if the team on the field doesn't win. Fans cannot go home happy without victories. And those that go home frustrated, upset and angry are apt not to come back.

Beyond that, the fans Ross wants to attract who now have reasons to stay away are likely to continue finding other activities to fill their game days.

So Ross is apparently under pressure from within his own circle to make a change.

Those people are telling Ross that a star coach will reinvigorate the fan base, increase season ticket sales, and ultimately help Miami win. Notice the order I just gave you. Some of the business-marketing-partnership people talking to Ross see the business side of changing a coach first and the on-field result as almost secondary.

Money is first in their minds.

So, again, money is a major variable in this coming decision. Well, here's a money matter Ross should weigh before he makes his decision:

If he fires Sparano and brings in a "star" coach who then brings his own general manager type, the cost is going to be exceptional. Ross will be on the hook for paying the final year of Sparano's contract (approximately $3 million), he'll be on the hook for Ireland (approximately $2 million), he'll be on the hook for Bill Parcells ($4 million), he'll be on the hook for assistants (including Mike Nolan), and he hasn't even started paying the folks that will be actually working for him.

Ross will have to pay that "star" coach and that will cost approximately $6-$8 million. He'll have to pay for the new GM, which will be another $2 million or so, and of course, he'll be paying for a new coaching staff while stay paying off the contracts of the assistants still under contract that the new coach does not retain.

Do the math. Changing administrations could cost Ross between $18-$24 million.

No big deal, you say? Really?

Are you aware Ross moved heaven and earth to try to work a $7.9 million relief on his stadium debt payments recently? I'm not saying he's counting his pennies, but I am saying he's not going to dismiss having to possibly pony up $24 million to make a change without some serious thought.

The argument from the business people might be that Ross will make back the money in season-ticket sales. The Dolphins were slightly over 50,000 season tickets this year and believe a new "star" coach could push them another 6,700 to 10,000 more, depending on who it is and what moves the new guy makes in free agency and the draft.

That is, of course, a short-term view of the situation.

It should be noted when Jimmy Johnson took over from Don Shula in 1996, season ticket sales jumped by about 7,000. And the next year they fell back by about 5,000.

When Nick Saban, the hot coach at the time, took over in 2006, season sales actually fell by 2,000. And the hiring of Parcells as the Football Czar didn't help one iota, as sales fell off the table after 2007 from 54,646 to 46,131.

The point is the hiring of a big name doesn't come with a guarantee that ticket sales will soar. And when they have soared in the past, they have leveled off the following year.

So the season ticket argument is a short-sighted one, if history is to be believed.

Think about that. Stephen Ross probably will.

Craig M.. I agree with a lot of what your saying. We all have these wish lists of possible quartebacks that might land in our laps.(myself included)The reality is that the list of available guys isn't great. Are there other possibilities? Sure. But as bad as Henne is, and has been. He might be the defacto starter next year just because he may end up being the best we have...again. I won't say never to anything as far as player moves(I was one of a few that said Marshall would never be a Phin) But the scenarios that would land us an upgrade at Qb. don't equate.

This organization has been decadent since Shula "delegated" his duties to Marino and Marino became the diva he was. It has not changed much, if at all, since then. When I compare this team to Pittsburg, New England, Baltimore, Atlanta (among other good teams), I can't fail to notice how these teams recovered from adversity in a reasonable period of time as a result of good coaching, good draft picking and good decisions in general. The Miami Dolphins organization has supported mediocrity and worse for over twenty-five years. The fans have witnessed one comedy of errors after another and one cluster fk after another. It is time to change; it is time to poop or get off the pot. It is time to get a real head coach (the type that doesn't give or accepts any excuses), real players who can think, play aggressively and are not affraid to get hit, a real GM and a real front office. Anything else would be another waste of time and money; another insult to the fans.

THE GANG OF DEFEAT ARE REAL MAD .lol

All this talk a new coordinator will make a huge difference hasn't watched close enough. I'm a henne supporter but I will concede that he is average at best. He stairs down receivers badly, he has limited leadership skills because if he did he would naturally challenge the coaches to allow him more freedom to change calls and open it up. My vote is to either keep him or bring in Donovan and take a chance in the draft. If pennington got it done why couldn't mcnabb. The cost would be minimum which allows us to fill other holes at the same time.

Why do people say it would cost $24M to make a change?? You can't add the cost of the current staff AND the cost of the new staff. According to yor #'s the GM in either case will cost $2M so that will be a $2M incremental. The new "star" coach will be $6M ($8M is ridiculous). That is an incremental $3M. So now you have $5M to replace HC and GM. Parcells is a sunk cost - you lost that money either way since he won't be doing squat for Miami this year. You can't add that $4M in. He has done more for SF already than he will for Miami this upcoming year. IF you keep Nolan then there is no incremental there for your DC and Henning is gone so you have to get a new OC there. SO where is the huge cost to change for Ross?? I see $5M plus I'm not sure the status of the asst's contracts so maybe another $1M total or so. That is a reasonable amount for a new owner to come in and bring in his own guy and not BP's anymore. If i was Ross and was handed BP and his cronies and then he deserted the team why would i have loyalty there?

ONE REPORTER BY THE NAME ..BEN VOLIN REPORTING THE SMAE THING ABOUT HENNE AND MARSHALL LAST SUNDAY ..................................

DENNISE ,GO TAKE A LOOK AT IT

ALoco...Who are the Gang of defeat?

The dim sum turned out awful. I will leave the dumpling making to the pros. The chickens feet didn't work out either. I ended up eating pizza for dinner.

All reports say Ross and Sparano have NOT met, and only spoke on the phone, they will meet next week. So Aloco you are basically just GUESSING Sparano is staying because EVERYBODY knows how finally difficult it will be on Ross to bring in a new regime and keep the old one at the same time.

I'm breaking the news that it will rain in 2011, I have inside info on it.

A Bengals or Lions fan would laugh at any Dolphin fan talking about their "suffering"

They might punch them, too.

Good points Matt Tracy.....I have been calling for McNabb or Plamer but i missed that reasoning....i'll 2nd that post

THE STORY OF THAT HENNE AND MARSHALL HAVE EXCHANGED HEAVY WORDS AND THEY R AT ODDS IS THE NEWS NOW ..GO CHECK A REPORTER BY NAME OF ...BEN VOLIN

Leave ALoco alone!!!

Went through the Herald and the Sun-Sentinel and couldn't find ANY mention of Henne and Marshall "nearly coming to blows."

Can you please provide the source for that story, ALoco.

Oh, that's right. There is no source aside from your own imagination.

Please make up another one soon. You never know when someone stupid enough to believe it might show up here.

Sorry, but I don't have to follow orders from you. I'll respond to whatever and whoever I want here. Got it?

I don't care about star names. I care about results. Winning creates the stars.

I want to see some actual football intelligence on Sundays from our head coach and QB. Too many times over the last few seasons I've had to yell "what the f are they doing?!?" when it comes to offensive philosophy, playcalling, situational football, clock management, and overall execution.

I'm tired of field goals, tired of watching a team play not to lose, and tired of hearing we need to give so-and-so more time, tired of the shoulda coulda woulda, tired of every excuse that gets used. We just lost consecutive games at home to the Browns, Bills, and Lions. Really what other proof do you need to see that Sparano, while he may be a great guy, is in over his head and can't get this team ready to play? Can we please just call a spade a spade?

And Ireland? I understand you win some you lose some in the draft, but we have absolutely wasted our top draft picks for far too long. Look, it's not impossible to turn things around in the NFL - look at the Rams, the Chiefs, even the 3 teams that just beat us are at least on an upward trajectory.

If Stephen Ross doesn't care enough to put the right people in place, then why should I, or any other longtime Fins fan continue to support this organization?

I became a fan 30 years ago. The Dolphins were about winning. They played aggressively. They blew teams out and put teams away when they had the chance. They scared other teams. They were exciting to watch. They expected to win. They contended just about every year. They had one of the greatest home field advantages in the NFL. They had a great coach, a star QB and mostly a bunch of role players who just played hard, smart, and did whatever it took to win (sounds a little bit like one of our division rivals, doesn't it?).

The blueprint is there. It's always been there. The ball is in your court, Mr. Ross. What you choose to do, or not do, will say everything about what you want the brand of the Miami Dolphins to stand for.

SORUCES SAYING WADE PHILIPS TO BE NEW MIAMI COACH AND DNOVAN MCNAB OUR NEW QB.

Matt Tracy,

How do you KNOW that Henne is average at best? You haven't seen him under the right conditions. What did we do to help him on offence this year other than add Marshall? I think it's fair to say our OL and running game were worse this year to, so basically the whole offence was worse this year than last. What if you gave Henne a new Oc to work with and some weapons to work with? Wouldn't you rather take another year to evaluate him under those conditions, than to throw away a 25 year old QB and acquire someone else at a steep price. Forget McNabb! If both Reid and Shanahan don't think he has it any more, then that's good enough for me.

Parcells is a sunk cost - you lost that money either way since he won't be doing squat for Miami this year. You can't add that $4M in. He has done more for SF already than he will for Miami this upcoming year.

Rich-LS

If your reffeing to Parcells convicing Ross to keep Sporano.....then truer words have never been spoken

Lol @ Aloco @12:28...Nice

DENNIS..ARE YOU SMOKING.........GO TO BEN VOLIN ,HE REPORTED THE STORY ON HIS TWEET ,YOU CAN FIND IT IF YOU WANT .

THAT WAS FAKE ALOCO AT 12.28 ,THAT COULD BE DARRYL...LOL

Way to go Mando! I agree! Keep Coach Tony and give Henne a shot of B-12 before every game (just kidding) but he does need a new OC and QB coach somebody that will teach him to be more aggressive and get some confidence and a shorter memory.

MESAGE FROM HOME PLANET: BLOB GREISY AND DAWN SHOELA TO COACH DOLPHINS.

I hear you Denisse, hahaha, ALoco cracks me up.

YOU ASKED FOR A SOURCE,I GAVE ONE TO YOU IN THE NAME OF(( BEN VOLIN )) ,HE REPORTED THE SAME THING OF FIGHTING WORDS BETWEEN HENNE AND MARSHALL............DENNIS , WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED FROM ME ?

IT'S FUNNY ,AFTER I SHUT THEM UP BY PROVIDING A SOURCE THEY TURN TO MAKING JOKES .....

BEN VOILN
BEN VOLIN.........A ONE SOURCE FOR THE STORY .TIME FOR MY MEATBALL SUB.

ALoco I've never impostered before. Not going to start now. You know I have no beef w/ you.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY........ BEN VOLIN

You don't find it even SLIGHTLY curious that not a single player, coach, or reporter that was actually IN the locker room saw or heard any exchange between Henne and Marshall? Not ONE?

But some idiot 'tweets' this nutjob fabrication and you run with it. You're EXACTLY the kind of person conspiracy buffs love to find.

NOW DENNISE IS SAYING THAT ALSO BEN VOLIN MAD IT UP ,HE'S A REPORTER AND WORRY ABOUT HIS NAME ALSO .

WHAT MAKES YOU KNOW IT DIDN'T HAPPEN ?

YOU OWE ME AN APOLOGY DENNISE .

DARRYL, I WAS MAKING A JOKE.....PEACE TO YOU

DENNISE......YOU OWE ME AN APOLGY BEFORE YOU CHANGE YOUR SCREEN NAME ON US .

DENNIS, I AM WAITING FOR THE APOLOGY .I GAVE YOU A SOURCE AND YOU CONFIRMED IT .

I would like to keep sparano, but if we have a real chance at cowher we should take it ,He is a better coach for sure. Now about the 4 or 5 players, we definitely need to upgrade the O line but the real problem has been the play of the QB , it does not look like he will be a good NFL Qb and that is a big problem because you just can't go out and find one that easy, maybe with a better QB coach and a new OC, Henne would be a different player so at the very least we HAVE TO BRING IN A NEW QB COACH AND OC, HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE

DENNISEEE...WHER DID YOU GO ?lolllllllllllllllll

I just looked up the whole Ben Volin stuff, ALoco, and there is absolutely NOTHING in his reports about Henne and Marshall "nearly coming to blows" as you so breathlessly told everyone.

To repeat: There is NOTHING in any story or tweet from Ben Volin reporting that.

The fact remains you FABRICATED it.

And it's YOU who owes people an apology for making things up and insulting people by thinking they're stupid enough to swallow your nonsense.

mark, do you know where dennise is ?

Dennis.....you called Aloco out and he produced....even though he embelished a bit....the bottom line is the rift was there....what say you now?

Armando,
The key is not how much it costs to get rid of those guys - that thinking puts businesses out of business.
The cost of the 3 sttoges is not thier salary. It is the cost of thier salaries plus all of the mistakes they make:
Wilford ($6mil), Pennington ($10mil + $2.5mil), Wilson ($8mil), Grove ($6mil).
No free agents will sign here unless we make them the highest paid player at thier position (Dansby). And that was before Ireland tolds the press that Dez' mother was a prostitute.

On that note...It is -15 degrees here and i have to go hook u the heat tape on the pipes at the bar so they don't freeze.. Happy New Year to everyone.Hopefully 2011 brings good luck and happiness to everyone on the blog, your families, and The Miami Dolphins

Dennis...that was indeed an adequate response....Aloco did indeed embelish....didn't see your last post before I wrote

dennise........you CAN'T LIE LIKE THAT, I STAND BY WHAT BEN VOLIN SAID,THAT MARSHALL AND HENNE GOT INTO FIGHTING WORDS AND THEY R AT ODDS .....FIRST YOU CAME YOU SAID HOW I CAN RUN W/THAT THEN NOW YOU SAYING HE DIDN'T SAY ANY THING .........

EVERY ONE SHOULD GO TO CHECK HIS TWEETS AND HE WILL FIND THAT'S TRUE .

I HOPE NEXT YOU R A MAN ENOUGH TO ADMIT YOU R WRONG

No, he did NOT "produce"

I just spent 10 minutes going through this whole 'Ben Volin' business and found absolutely NOTHING that would back ALoco's contention that Marshall and Henne "nearly came to blows."

That's not a slight exaggeration, dude, it's a COMPLETE FABRICATION.

Sorry, but I just don;t suffer fools and liars gladly. And this guy happens to be both.

Thanks for the article, Mando. Good assessment of the situation. I don't care about the financial side of the decision, but I still say you give the guys their fourth year. apart from Henning of course.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

FOR MARSHALL TO SAY (( I AM NOT SURE ABOUT HENNE )) YESTERDAY AND PRAISE ONLY THE COACH IT CONFIRMES TO ME THAT STORY OF BEING IN ODDS W/HENNE AND INDEED A FIGHING WORDS HAS HAPPENED .

BEN VOLIN
BEN VOLIN

HAPPY NEW YEAR DENNISEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

you'll get no argument from me.....

ALoco, not sure who Dennise is - I've seen a Denny post here before - I liked Denny's posts.

DD, HNY to you and yours!!

Just exactly how many years does it take to realize that when running out the clock late in the 4th quarter you need to actually let the play clock tick down to 1 or 2 seconds before snapping the ball? Everyone on this board knows that yet twice this season Henne has forgotten. Not acceptable once, unforgiveable twice. I'll just come out and say it, Henne isn't a gifted enough athlete to overcome his lack of intelligence. Will say it again, 22 Wonderlic. If you've taken the test you'll realize that's not good for you or I let alone the future of a multibillion dollar company. I'm not indicting him as a person, just as the quarterback of the Miami Dolphins. I hold, and you should too, that position to a higher standard.

The arguement that Henning doesn't call plays to go downfield was debunked by Marshall, who I assume knows what plays are being called in the huddle. He flat out said Henne isn't willing to throw it downfield or take a chance. That mentality got Matt Leinart kicked out of Arizona and into a 3rd string QB position in Houston. And if that was "coached" into him that's just too bad. It is what it is. It's there now and again is unacceptable. I'm not willing to wait another three years to see if it can be coached out of him.

While I agree it's not a great year for QBs in free agency or drafting in the mid first round we have no choice but to grab both in 2011.

DENNISE,I GIVE YOU A WAY OUT............

BEN VOLIN, GO ARGUE WITH HIM FOR HIS STORY ,HE'S JOURNALIST...I AM NOT .

FOR MARSHALL TO SAY (( I AM NOT SURE ABOUT HENNE )) YESTERDAY AND PRAISE ONLY THE COACH IT CONFIRMES TO ME THAT STORY OF BEING IN ODDS W/HENNE AND INDEED A FIGHING WORDS HAS HAPPENED .

Ah, so now your story changes to "not sure about Henne."

In other words, all you have is the same quotes from Marshall that were reported EVERYWHERE,

No argument between them, no "nearly coming to blows."

Thanks for admitting the obvious. You fabricated the rest of it.

Happy New Year and thanks for playing.

This is why you're the best Mando - Great Read!

DENNISE...YOU R VERY TRICKY, I DIDN'T SAY THESE WORDS ,MARSHALL SAID IT WHEN HE WAS ASKED ABOUT HOW HE FEELS ABOUT HENNE YESTERDY AND HEEEEEEEEE SAID ,,,,,,,,, HIS WORDS (( I AM NOT SURE ))...................

BEN VOLIN

BEN VOLIN IS MY HERO NOW

aloco you are right, after the game marshall confronted henne and told him how bad he sucks and he was lobbying for them to put thigpen in there. a new name has surfaced for a possible hc. his name is cravin morehead!

Well said Chris 623.....and yes we will probably get both......no doubt we will have a vet....If we go into the draft to get one they need to make a BIG TIME MOVE....via the jets, (even though sanchez is just slightly better that Henne)....Bucs, Ravens (i think) giants of a few years ago....chargers......

That means mortgage the future for your FRANCHISE QB....TRADE UP and get WHO YOU WANT......it has worked out well for those teams....consistent playoff, and sometimes SBs.....

Personnally I want NEWTON...because his game has more room for error...but who ever they go after they need to GO ALL IN!!!!! other wise you are just another Henne

"Tricky?"

I'm not the one fabricating stories, pal.

All you have is what Marshall said regarding his frustration with the offense. THAT'S what Ben Volin and everyone else has already reported.

There WASN'T any altercation or "nearly coming to blows." That suff is a product of your imagination and is reported by NOBODY for the simple reason that IT NEVER HAPPENED.

For Christ's sake, you just ADMITTED as much by saying "not sure about Henne."

Sorry to expose you like this but maybe you should stick to actual FACTS in the future or at least add a disclaimer to your remarks that they are based on imagination and speculation rather than actual events.

just draft

PICK YOUR BEEF WITH BEN VOLIN...YOU ASKED ME FOR A SOURCE AND CONFIRMED THE STORY .....GO PLAY WITH HIM .
