Tony Sparano has not seen Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is some time and consequently has not received any assurances he will continue to be the Dolphins head coach in 2011. But, in case you're wondering, he is endorsing offensive coordinator Dan Henning as his guy.
Sparano was asked during today's press conference if he has met with Ross recently.
“I haven’t visited with him, no, and that’s not my problem right now,” Sparano said. “My problem is to get ready for the Detroit Lions. That’s what I’m charged with.”
For the sake of clarification, I asked Sparano if he's received any sort of endorsement or assurance from Ross that he will be the Miami coach in 2010. He has not.
“I just need to get my team to get ready to play this week," he said. "That's what I need to do. Everything is else is beyond my control. Let someone else deal with it."
Sparano must deal with picking a coach to run Miami's offense in 2011. I have reported previously that most people in the Dolphins facility expect offensive coordinator Dan Henning to retire. But if Henning were to get a wild-hair idea about returning in 2011 after his unit finished 31st in the NFL in scoring (where it currently ranks), Sparano sounds like he'd be fine with that.
“I think that Dan Henning, for Tony Sparano, has been tremendous,” Sparano said, using the often fatal third-person reference to himself in his speech. “I think the guy has done a wonderful job during my time here. I look at the entire body of work, you guys just look at the last three or four games.
"I look at the whole body of work and this guy has done a tremendous job. He’s the same guy that we were all talking about, ‘Man oh man, he finds the ways to use the personnel to the best of their ability.’ That was you people saying that not me. So I would tell you for Tony Sparano Dan Henning has been tremendous. It's easy to point blame, fellas, and I get it. it comes with the territory. That's the way it goes. I need to do a better job. Tony Sparano needs to do a better job.”
Here's my thinking: Sparano went overboard to defend Henning. I don't believe that was by accident. And I hope he fully intends to see Henning off with a gold watch or whatever the Dolphins give their retiring assistants who had terrible seasons.
Ultimately, Sparano will be judged by whether, in fact, Henning returns next year. I believe if he makes the pitch to Ross that he just made to the public about Henning, he will lose all credibility with the owner. I don't think that will happen. I think, I hope that was just for public consumption.
I just wish coach would realize we're not stupid. Dumb, maybe. But not stupid. We understand he's saying something that ultimately won't mean squat. So why say it and hurt your credibility?
... Unless, of course, he actually means this stuff with the zeal he used, in which case I would seriously worry about this franchise's future.

Also Craig last year when TS was shoving PAT WHITE down our throats! What did we accomplish? Nothing I believe when the wildc a r p was put in Penn didn't like the fact he was taken out when he was in a rhythm. Noooo but TS never change it even if his players didn't like it, but today's press conference I didn't hear a apology out of TS for not making at least the playoffs and loosing all this games at home, when fans spend lots of money for tickets and at the stadium what a loser TS is!!!

dolphken...careful what you wish for.
"young, savy, energetic up and coming coach"
Is that not what Denver had over the last two seasons?....look what that got them.
I'll take Cowher over Daniels (or any young coach) anyday!

Henning is gone - bank on it.
He is this year's punching bag like Pasqualoni was last year.
Sparano and Ireleand get one more year.
Ross imposes a "do or die" provision on them as it relates to getting the offense going.
The "X" factor in all this this Mike Nolan.
Where does he end up in 2011.

Posted by: t | December 20, 2010 at 03:21 PM
NHFINSFAN,
You are dreaming!! Of the four you list, Nolan back as DC is the ONLY one likely to come true. If this team trades up for Cam Newton I will be DONE with this team. We will become the complete laughing stocks of this league (and no guys, we're not right now, we are 7-7, there are a lot of teams a lot worse).
I'd love to know the fascination with Cowher. What's that based on? We're going to blow everything up to bring in Cowher? What makes you guys think Nolan will be DC next year if Cowher comes in? He's going to want his own guy. So you guys are prepared to blow EVERYTHING up, in a lockout threatened season, where you'e going to have a new OC, a new DC, a new HC, possibly a new GM and possibly a new defensive system and the coaches aren't going to have any access to the players until after the lockout? Are we trying to finish with the first pick in 2012? Wouldn't it just be easier to change the OC and add some pieces on offence?
Posted by: Craig M | December 20, 2010 at 03:21 PM
Craig, wasn't it on one of these blogs that I read the Miami Dolphins had the highest payroll in the league? It cost a boat load of money to bring in Dansby and Marshall. I could be wrong I guess. Still, I'm pretty sure it's up there with the top ones. I also said I held Sparano accountable for not getting rid of Henning and REPLACING him with David Lee, not getting rid of him. I just think Lee would of been a lot more creative offensively than Henning. This offense is way too vanilla for my liking, I don't like hearing opposing players saying they knew which plays were coming and all that sort of thing. Henning should of been fired a long time ago and wasn't. That's on Sparano. He fired his ST's coach for that bad game against New England. Well, sorry to say, but Miami's offense the last 3 games has been just as bad as the special teams against New England. Shouldn't be any different if you ask me.

Why the love for Bill Cowher?? 1 Superbowl in 15 years with a STRONG front office behind him.
Think Dan Henning is/was conservative?
Pittsburgh under him was run. run. dink on third, punt, and play defense.
What QB's did he develop? Yes, he got Ben R. at the end, but in the meantime you had Cordell Stewart, Neil O'Donnell, and god knows whom. That's 13 years, thereabouts, with no QB.
Yeah, Cowher is the messiah. Same as Jimmy when you clowns wanted to get rid of Shula. Same as Saban, "the god of the college ranks," same as Cameron, "finally, an offensive coach."
Like it or no, Sparano is the best coach we have had since Shula.
Changing coaches like changing underwear will weaken your team as much as Dave Wannstedt picking your draft.
Posted by: Matt in NC | December 20, 2010 at 03:23 PM
IMO, Sparano shouldnt be brought back merely on the sole merit it's a mismatch for him going up against Belichek alone. The road to the afc east crown goes right thru Foxboro.
If we dont have a HC capable of at least coming close to matching the wizard of Foxboro(Belichek)our chances of becoming a dominant team falls apart in that heap too. Only when we retain a HC remotely capable of this, will we ever even become remotely capable of unseating Belichek and the Pats.
The Pats are the only measuring stick for the rest of the afc east right now. Also right now, even at the mention of the Miami Dolphins in Belichek's presence. He sort of shakes his head and brightly smiles.
This my fellow fin fans is totally and indeniably unacceptable!
Posted by: DyingBreed | December 20, 2010 at 03:23 PM
Heard the Cowher thing too. Just don't know how that fits though. He'll want to run his own defense so Nolan would be a gonner. Also we'd still be looking at a very vanilla ofense, when's the last time you saw an aggressive Cowher offense?
Personally I think Sporano gets the benefit of the doubt and they let him play out the last year of his contract before running him. It will be playoffs or bust for Sporano to get any kind of extension beyond 2011.

t,
Why don't you and everyone else come up with a PLAN for next year and beyond rather than just 'parroting' what everyone else is saying in 'fire Sparano and Henning'. Tell me what the plan is next for next season please because knee jerk stuff never works.
Posted by: Craig M | December 20, 2010 at 03:24 PM
A coach knows he's in trouble when the press starts asking if he's received any endorsement/assurance from the owner.
BTW, PFT just picked up this blog post. So now Sparano's endorsement of Henning has gone national. What's your response, Mr. Ross?
Mr. Ross?
Hello?
P.S> Great job, Armando!

Armando, just say it, fire henning or you're next on the hit list tony.

Blow everything! Craig this season already blows! You must be a Pats fan, to continue to let Sparano at the helm, is asking for mediocrity!
Posted by: t | December 20, 2010 at 03:26 PM
They started last season with Pennington again and it was working until he went down for the year with injury.
Posted by: Craig M | December 20, 2010 at 02:27 PM
Craig I'm suffering from some mortal derpression and a binge hangover, so I could be wrong.
But didn't Pennington and Hennings offense start out 0-3 last year.
Pennington struggled in Hennings offense the year before until the Wildcat snuck up on everybody.
Jake Delhomme struggled the last time we saw Hennings offense before coming to Miami.
I know it could possibly just be Pennington, Delhomme, Henne and Thigpens fault, but starting out a season 0-3 is exactly what I would call "working".
Posted by: odinseye | December 20, 2010 at 03:26 PM
So Boulder,
Under your plan who is gone for next year and who is back and what are we doing in the draft? PLEASE tell me you're not asking for a QB in the first round.
Posted by: Craig M | December 20, 2010 at 03:26 PM
Craig,
Word on the street is the labor deal will be inked by Jan 31st. so no lock out.
Ross invested hundreds of million of dollars into this team and is not getting any ROI on his money.
Ross is NOT HAPPY and the probability of him cleaning house is over 80%+
Newton has some serious mobility skills and brings the type of excitement that Ross is seeking.
Cowher has 4 superbowl appearences and comes from one of the most stable ownership structures in all of sports...he knows how to win over the long haul.

Well said, DB @ 3:23!

Craig you may be right by giving sparano and Ireland and Henne 1 more year but if there is a chance we could get cowher we should in a heartbeat, He did win 1 superbowl but has been to many playoff games and AFC championship games he knows what it takes, this should be looked at for sure.I say give Bill a call to see if he is interested.

Last season Vontae Davis started talking in the 3rd person
End of this season Tony Sparano is talking in the 3rd person
Home met these guys several times, talked to them, shook their hands and had them sign Dolphin memorabilia
Do U think unfoiled Home may have HAARP Mind Controlled CB Davis & HC Sparano

The more I think about that last (41sec) "drive," the madder I get.
Sheer Keystone Kops Ineptitude. And then you see Big Ben, in a similar time bind, at least get his team into a fighting chance to win at the buzzer, and you realize Henne & co. are LIGHT YEARS from adequacy, let alone pretty-goodness.
Posted by: The Seer | December 20, 2010 at 03:29 PM
I say get a stop gap QB while we groom a new QB...fire Henning for sure! I could give Sparano another year ONLY if Henning is fired/retired...I do have a problem with Sparano defending henning..but that's classic Sparano working around questions instead of giving a straight answer. Maybe Tony has to go, I'm not sure...I am sure Henne and henning should be gone with no questions asked...
Posted by: cowkilla | December 20, 2010 at 03:30 PM
No under my plan. henning is gone. If we can get cowher I hope sparano is also gone.
But my feeling is sparano, ireland and parcells get to finish their last year of contract. We get a new OC but we also draft a QB probably not in the first round but if one falls to us then why not?
I also think we bring in a veteran to compete with henne and the QB we drafted.
The biggest issue with the phins offense this year is the running game. We have to get the running game going or it doesn't matter who the QB is.

Love these Cowher bashers one legged fans. Just like the one legged man have only one solid point to stand on. Remember a one legged man can easily take a fall.
1 SB in 15yrs you argue? How about this:
"THE DOLPHINS HAVENT BEEN TO A SB IN 24 YEARS"!
The Clock's Still Running! 15yrs vs 24yrs looks very good to me right now. It should too you too! 24 Super Bowl-less seasons and still counting.
Cowher-bashers you're still on the clock. So what you gonna do geniuses?
Posted by: DyingBreed | December 20, 2010 at 03:32 PM
Odin,
That was a typo....I changed it in the post underneath. That should have said 'WASN'T WORKING'.
Montreal, Oakland at the highest payroll at $152 million and we are middle of the pack (right where we are in the standings) at $144 million.
I'll go back to my original post, you are assuming that at the end of last season Sparano had the authority to replace Henning as OC. We don't know what nthose conversations were but we do know that Henning is an old buddy of Parcells. It's likely that Henning was protected for another year. I still believe there's not a chance in Hell that Henning will be back next year.

with millions of global players
There is an option in defeating your opponent
This option is "mind control" thru the use of RF waves
U can take over your enemies mind for 10 seconds and have him do anything u wish
Including suiciding himself by having him jumping off a cliff
Wonder where they would have ever got the idea that HAARP mind control was real and could be used for a weapon

NHFINSFAN,
Where are you hearing the labour deal will be signed by January 31st? Would love to know where you are getting that information. Everything I'm hearing says that there's an 75-80 per cent chance of a lockout. Under those circumstances, I think teams would be nuts to make too much change. I think we could kiss the playoffs goodbye for another season.

Sean Smith watched the 1st Bills TD go right by him and Dansby
Fitzpatrick also hit Steve Johnson for a 13-yard touchdown in the third quarter on a post route past Poser Boy Fraud CB Sean Smith, who admitted he should have pressed Johnson more at the line. That ended an 86-yard drive, the Bills' only long drive of the day
Sean Smith dropped yet another easy interception that hit him in both hands against the Bills
Kim Bokamper reported Sean Smith dropped 4 or 5 interceptions the week b4 and gave up the longest TD play of the day a 42 YDer the Poser Boy Fraud got again, burned on
Bokamper confronted Smith who said he needed both hands to count all his dropped interceptions this season
think he might need to use his toes also
There was a reason Sean Smith was benched the very first game of the season against Buffalo
Sean did not see the field for even one play
and of course the Dolphins Won that 1st game against the Bills

Yet the word ball skills and Sean Smith are still used in the same sentence

AS LONG AS OUR SOLE OBJECTIVE IS NOT TRYING TO MAKE BELICHEK BELICHEK OUR OUR ONE AND ONLY LIFE LONG MISSION TO UNSEAT. WE WILL CONTINUE TO HIRE DUDS AS COACHES AND FIELD DUDS AS PLAYERS.
If everything we do becomes centered around beating Belichek. Then by default we become capable of beating 99% of the rest of the league.

Dumb,Dumber,Dumbest.. That's the next NFL football Follies film, starring Henne,Henning, and Sparano. Of course Sparano does not want to hurt Henning feelings, that is like telling your girlfriend she's a loudsy cook !! I've watched enough games on Henne to know that he is average, if he was on the Bills team he would be 3rd string behind John Beck and Fitz.
Posted by: Wang Chung | December 20, 2010 at 03:43 PM
You're just asking for another revolving door in Miami, guys. We'll be having this same conversation next year or the season after. We can all agree that Henning is not the answer. I'm saying we've got a great defence out there, let's get the offence straight and it starts with the OC and we add with the draft and FA.
Posted by: Craig M | December 20, 2010 at 03:43 PM
No way Ross blows this whole thing up and fires Sparano with a year left on the contract. He will get the benefit of the doubt for next season but will need to make a very strong run...as in playoffs to get any kind of extension. Henning is gone though.
Posted by: wolfman1313 | December 20, 2010 at 03:44 PM
If there is going to be a new coach - his name better be Jim harbaugh - or just go with Sparano one more year with an offensive refresh.

HAARP - New World Order Mind Control
and Weather Warfare Weapon
United States Secretary of Defense William Cohen apparently stated in a press briefing, while commenting on new technological threats possibly held by terrorist organizations: "Others are engaging in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, (and) volcanoes remotely, using the use of electromagnetic waves." Dr Begich's news release adds: "While the Secretary of Defense suggests this capability might be possessed by terrorist organizations, the U.S. military continues to deny that they also control such technology."

Was Vontae Davis and Tony Sparano "mind controlled by HAARP?

Craig, I'm talking about at some point during this season, he should of fired Henning. Not before obviously. We've been ranked 30th and 31st offensively in the NFL all year long. That doesn't cut it. Bonemago (sp?) was fired cause special teams were terrible. Wouldn't you call our offense that exact word? It has no life, no running game, opposing db's know which plays are coming. It all sucks. Why does Henning get a free pass and Bonemago didn't? It's your responsability as a head coach to fix those issues, if you don't, you're failing. David Lee deserves a chance, I don't think he could of done worse than Henning could he?
Posted by: #1 Dolphin Fan in Montreal | December 20, 2010 at 03:46 PM
The major problem is you're not there to play football (as far as the NFL), you're there as entertainers (that's why they get paid so well). IF you're not entertaining, then fans don't show their support. If fans don't show support, then the team either becomes obsolete or moves somewhere else.
So, whatever anyone here thinks about Sparano, what's pretty evident is the Miami Dolphins are no longer entertaining. They are boring. Predictable. And that's going to hurt Sparano more than anything else. Do what you want on the road, but at home, in front of PAYING fans, you need to win, and be entertaining. They've done neither.

Mark I Toronto - unfortunately I don't think Harbaugh is going to the pros tight now. Everything I've heard from the guy indicates no interest. He is far more interested in going to Michigan.

High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program HAARP is being used as directed-energy weapon, weather control, earthquake induction device and/or for mind control.
Soon all the slaves will succumb to HAARP victims of the New World Order

Aren't successful teams in the NFL constantly upgrading at all positions? This applies to Head Coaches/Assistants, GMs, etc. etc. Wouldn't Gruden/Cowher/Billick all be upgrades over Sparano? I could see keeping Sparano if he's showing signs of genius and just dominating everyone as a fairly newcomer, but he's not. The NFL network had a hard time finding highlights for this game from yesterday--that's how bad it is. This team may finish 7-9 and that's inexcusable from where we were two years ago. The defense is better than last year, but this season is not progress.

Changing coaches like changing underwear will weaken your team as much as Dave Wannstedt picking your draft.

As much as you might not like to change your underwear, you should!
It can lead to infections that could take out your star player, balls and all.

Face IT!
The only ball skills sean smith has is when he jerks on his nut sack!
...just saying

YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BEAT BELICHEK BY BRINGING IN SOME RINKY DINK UNPROVEN COACH OR ANOTHER EGO-MANIAC UNCAPPABLE OF SEEING LIFE BEYOND HIS OWN BROW EITHER.

DC,
Your point is well made at 3:47pm. That might be the thing that hurts Sparano. However, you've got to ask yourself, do you want your owner making a decision based on what's best for the organization or what's best for business. I believe with all the uncertainty surrounding the CBA, it's best to have as little upheaval as possible. This is where, from a fans' standpoint, you hope your owner surrounds himself with football people and not business people. I'm not convinced, based on the circus-like atmosphere he's created around the team and with the celebrities he's gotten invloved that he's all about the product that's on the field and that he's more about the Dolphins as a business and entertainment venture. It may also be partly why Parcells left town.

ONCE YOU COME CLOSE TO MATCHING WITS AND TALENT WITH BELICHEK. bY DEFUALT YOU ALSO BECOME CAPABLE OF BEATING 99% OF THE REMAINING NFL TEAMS.
WHEN WILL SOME DOLPHIN FANS GET IT? YOU SAY YOUVE GROWN WEARY OF LOSING BUT ONLY POST HOW WE CAN CONTINUE DOING SO.

wolfman, if that's the case then just go with Sparano with the offensive refresh for oe more year.
I have just been burnt too much by the big names coming to rescue Miami. Johnson, Saban, Parcells - all big names, all big resumes, all left the job half assed. Saban not even half assed - maybe quarter assed.
I think Cowher/Gruden would do the same.

can tony sparano be fired already i am tried of him already. Can steven ross go get cowher now and draft a qb.
