Sparano has no endorsement but gives one to Henning

Tony Sparano has not seen Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is some time and consequently has not received any assurances he will continue to be the Dolphins head coach in 2011. But, in case you're wondering, he is endorsing offensive coordinator Dan Henning as his guy.

Sparano was asked during today's press conference if he has met with Ross recently.

“I haven’t visited with him, no, and that’s not my problem right now,” Sparano said. “My problem is to get ready for the Detroit Lions. That’s what I’m charged with.”

For the sake of clarification, I asked Sparano if he's received any sort of endorsement or assurance from Ross that he will be the Miami coach in 2010. He has not.

“I just need to get my team to get ready to play this week," he said. "That's what I need to do. Everything is else is beyond my control. Let someone else deal with it."

Sparano must deal with picking a coach to run Miami's offense in 2011. I have reported previously that most people in the Dolphins facility expect offensive coordinator Dan Henning to retire. But if Henning were to get a wild-hair idea about returning in 2011 after his unit finished 31st in the NFL in scoring (where it currently ranks), Sparano sounds like he'd be fine with that.

“I think that Dan Henning, for Tony Sparano, has been tremendous,” Sparano said, using the often fatal third-person reference to himself in his speech. “I think the guy has done a wonderful job during my time here. I look at the entire body of work, you guys just look at the last three or four games.

"I look at the whole body of work and this guy has done a tremendous job. He’s the same guy that we were all talking about, ‘Man oh man, he finds the ways to use the personnel to the best of their ability.’ That was you people saying that not me. So I would tell you for Tony Sparano Dan Henning has been tremendous. It's easy to point blame, fellas, and I get it. it comes with the territory. That's the way it goes. I need to do a better job. Tony Sparano needs to do a better job.”

Here's my thinking: Sparano went overboard to defend Henning. I don't believe that was by accident. And I hope he fully intends to see Henning off with a gold watch or whatever the Dolphins give their retiring assistants who had terrible seasons.

Ultimately, Sparano will be judged by whether, in fact, Henning returns next year. I believe if he makes the pitch to Ross that he just made to the public about Henning, he will lose all credibility with the owner. I don't think that will happen. I think, I hope that was just for public consumption.

I just wish coach would realize we're not stupid. Dumb, maybe. But not stupid. We understand he's saying something that ultimately won't mean squat. So why say it and hurt your credibility?

... Unless, of course, he actually means this stuff with the zeal he used, in which case I would seriously worry about this franchise's future.

Was Vontae Davis and Tony Sparano "mind controlled by HAARP?

I'm not sure the good teams are about constantly upgrading as they are about continuity. For example, you didn't see the Pats running out and trying to get better co-ordinators after Crennel and Weiss left the team. A lot of the play-calling was taken over by Bellichik and a young up and coming coach like Mangini and then McDaniels. They didn't run out and hire the hottest 'co-ordinator of the month'. Same with the Colts when they lost Dungy, they hired from within. They lost their offensive co-ordinator and line coach but it wasn't about bringing in a 'name' guy. Same with the Steelers when Cowher went into retirement. They didn't go out and get the 'name' guy, they took an up and coming assistant from another team and Mike Tomlin has become one of the best young coaches in the game today. If our fans had their way we'd be blwoing this up every couple of years. It's not the blue print for success. What makes you think ANY of those guys are better than Sparano? Based on what? Past history? Not necessarily.....

Yeah, why did Dan Henning do a better body of work last year than this year? Yeah, why did Chad Henne play much better last year than this year? HMMMMMmmmm

It seems plausible to me that the US Government would use advanced weapons to control the the outcome of a football game. I mean, isn't that why they built the stuff?

Sparano could'nt cook a dinner, what makes you think he can be a headcoach in the NFL!

Mark in Toronto,

Totally agree with your last post. We promised success with Johnson, Saban and Parcells. What do we have to show for it? A couple of playoff losses. The guy we've got right now is committed to the success of this team and shows up with the same energy and attitude every week. He's not going to bail on this team mid-sentence.....that's what you are going to get with one of the other guys....and then what? Change the offence, change the results!!

To all you stinking fish fans who posted in the NY papers last week after that early Christmas present you were handed, enjoy the rest of your season and look forward to watching the JETS in the playoffs!

The Lions are playing tough physical football up front on both sides of the ball.

Their 3rd string QB is throwing the ball all over the field.

Have no fear Captain CoachSpeak endorses Hap A Long Henning, It's RoboHenne to the rescue!

Oh God, the Lions are going to hand us our a s s e s! It's 7-9 time AGAIN!

I wonder if drinking anti-freeze will really kill me?

Mark in Toronto - totally agree with you on the big name coaches.....and I think they'll. Give TS the benefit of the doubt for.the final year of his contract. Dolphins will have to come up big in 2011 for him to get any kind of extension though.

To bad about Harbaugh he's a he'll of a coach.

Happy to watch the Jet's, if that what it takes to lose Sparano!

For the daring, forget Homer, and have a glance at this, at least skim through that first page:

After reading this how the hell can anyone want Sparano back if he is so blind that he can't even see one of the most obvious problems that everyone else in the league can see??? I like Tony but if this is his attitude than I can't take him seriously at all. Henning is a joke and that's putting it mildly. He couldn't call a college game at this point. He is predictable and doesn't know how to use players worth a damn.

Does everyone realize the chances of a 2011 season are currently slim? Not sure if current contracts automatically get extended if there is no season or if they terminate, probably in the fine print of each contract.

I would prefer that Ross take this team(and himself)to another City rather than to go through another incredibly fu----up embarassing season.

Stephen Ross begin 2010 making and having super bowl aspirations.

All that remains is to see exactly what those changes will be.

Mark R,

That's what he's saying publicly. You don't know what hes saying privately. One thing you have to respect about Tony is he doesn't throw any of his players or coaches under the bus. That's important! It's supposed to be a family and the guys will go through a wall for somebody like that. It's the type of thing that will want to bring FAs to Miami and cause guys to want to stay here. Say what you will about Tony but the guy has CLASS.....something a lot of you on here wouldn't even know how to spell.

Rob Ryan- Rex's slimmer, better looking (ha!) twin is only a DC. Maybe he could be our next head coach.

Rob vs. Rex twice a year... that would be interesting.

Odin, thanks for reminding me, I just changed my underwear

HOT NEWSFLASH FOR ALL DOLFANZ! ESPN just reported that Bill Cowher is very interested in returning to coaching in the NFL. Giants #1 and Dolphins #2 on his list. IT'S TIME TO SET ASIDE THE BS AND GIVE THESE PLAYERS A REAL COACHING STAFF!!! We need coaches who will make things happen, not wait for things to happen and blame the players for failing to execute!

Betting, hoping, praying!!!

It's not only HAARP, it's not only the U.S. government, it's little allegiance to anything that is not $. Right?

Go hire Josh McDaniels as the next O.C. he made kyle orton and brandon lloyd look like Montana and Rice.

jocol, believe me, I will enjoy watching the Jets get knocked out of the playoffs, just like they have for the past 41 years. Go choke ur meat bone jackass

Matt in NC,

I was enjoying your posts today. You made some very solid points. Until that last one of course. Please tell me you were kidding....

Ugh...The negativity around here is terrible!!

Off with everyone's heads...then what?? Another two years (or more) in the wilderness?

The reason why this franchise has stunk since the early part of the last decade is instability at the leadership positions.

Merry Christmas to all!!

"Fans, what we need is more experience at the top, NOT less. Therefore, effective immediately, Tony Sparano has been relieved of duty and Dan Henning will move up to Head Coach for the foreseeable future."

Thanks for your patience, we will get there!

Matt Ryan will always be better than Chad Henne. Has nothing to do with clowns. The only clown in all this is you dude. LOL!

montrenothing, this shows your ignorance. Atlanta is stacked with talent from line to tight end. Like i said stick to pee wee canadian ball you can comprehend that OBVIOUSLY

If we didnt already have Brandon Marshall and Mike Nolan I would be fully on the Josh McDaniels as OC bandwagon. But those two things bring about too much potential friction and that's the last way you want to start out as a new regime.

Pointing fingers of blame is really just asking for accountability Coach Sparano....who is responsible for this season? You? Mr. Ross? Dan Henning, the players? the Grinch? Who? We, the loya (for now) fans just want accountability and some stability, instead of the year in year out excuses and mismanagement of this franchise. Someone step up and or step out.

correction:loyal fans

Right on man....and these guys don't get it. They just want to keep moving people in and out of here when things don't go well. It's the reason we haven't been to the Super Bowl in 26 years. You look at the good teams....Pittsburgh has has THREE head coaches in their history, New England's Bellichik has been there forever and Jeff Fisher for a very long time. Result?......many seasons in the playoffs....us?.....let's shufle things up every few years.....AWFUL!!

Montreal Phin fool thinks Its all on Henne. It all starts with the line kid.

Craig, the best reason to keep Sparano is the lockout. If you fire him, and hire a new coach, they wouldn't be able to start OTAs until after the agreement is made. If it's like March/April, that means a new coach wouldn't even SEE his team until after the draft sometime. That puts a team WAY, WAY back in progress.

So, if the agreement isn't made by end of season, I think there IS no choice (they have to keep Sparano). That's why I was lukewarm on the replace Sparano talk.

It's just that these last few games, he's making me extremely nervous that he's just Cam Cameron in sheeps clothing, and not a Parcells/Bellicheck-type guy. I hope to h*ll I'm wrong. I hope Henne gets it together. I hope all good things to everyone in the organization EXCEPT Henning (I hope he kicks the can, honestly).

But, Jan. 31 (if you believe that post earlier) is TOO late to hire a coach. From the rules, I think that still means the coach would be locked out from starting OTAs until after the draft. I think, I heard that somewhere. Have to recheck.

If we had Matt Ryan it would all be different this year...........Idiot.

Actually, Jan. 31st is still in this year (since the SuperBowl is in Feb.). So, if they got the agreement by then, I think a coach would have time to implement OTAs right away. But that's playing it very close.

Finzfan - saw that too. My biggest issue with some like Cowher is....does he realize three years into his rebuild that he's truly burned out.....ala Jimmy Johnson. Also Cowher is pretty old school approach offensively, much like we currently have. Lastly, the only good thing we have going for us.....Nolan.....would be gone as Cowher would want to install his own defense......which as I recall is a 4 -3......so we'd. Be starting from scratch again on that front.

It might time for Nolan and Marshall to show thir professionalism and bury the hatchett. McDaniels is at the top of my list for OC, followed closely by the soon to be fired Gary Kubiak. We had Mularkey here and by changing regimes.....YET AGAIN.....we lost a good man to Atlanta. There's a lot of talk he will be considered for a head coaching job somewhere and yes, I know, he did poorly in Buffalo.

My blog went down, this is just a test...I believe Home directed HAARP rays in my direction....I just finished covering my roof with aluminum foil.....

The afc east is now the house that Belichek has built. The good ole days of being the house that Shula had built have long since past.

Unless every single move we make from here on out is centered around attempting to match wits and counter Belichek-like moves. We will continue to be marred in middle of the pack status at best.

As I stated before, matchup with Belichek then you become capable of matching up with the other 99% of the nfl teams.

Check, Craig M

Time for change........

This is word for word what you said above I am just pasting it below.

For the sake of clarification, I asked Sparano if he's received any sort of endorsement or assurance from Ross that he will be the Miami coach in 2010. He has not.

Asked Sparano if he will be the Miami coach in 2010 he has not. The Miami coach in 2010? 2010??????????????

Mando thats like the Dolphins 21-21 victory over Green Bay in October??????? I am just qouting you Mando. Boy, Sparono,Ireland,Henning, and Henne are rubbing off on you Mondao

Easiest way to fix the problem. Get Josh mcdaniels for OC and new quarter back. Even if it's mcnabb. Till we can draft one

Hello all, Sorry I have not been around much latly. I am just disgusted with this. I am a die-hard here in MA, die-hard like most of us in these posts. I got negative so I just read and steamed instead of posted. I hat to say that I think I was wrong about Henne, he has really digressed. My only thought is, Maybe a different coach/OC can find a way to use the good tolls this guy has. Just my opinion here, but I think Parcells is a joke, and mostly because he quit on his mistakes. Ireland is a puppet and I am not sure he has a clue about talent. and Spoarano, well, I really want to like him, however this season tained me on him. Same crap statements after a loss. I do not see the talent on the team as a whole getting better. And I saw more effort out of the 1-15 team than I do this one. That means players support him, but don't bleed for him. I think I would like to see Ross clean house, and try this all over again. This hurts/sucks. I can not believe this franchise has not won a playoff game in this decade.

How many points has Miami scored the last 3 games??? 34 ????, I wonder if Dan(Dead man walking)Henning Knows that a team can score 34 in 1 game in todays NFL???

Jeff Ireland should come out of hiding and took the stand today. He should have said "look, we have made mistakes, we are not going to the playoffs so for are last two games we are going to proceed with a different approach. Dan Henning will be replaced by David Lee" We are obviously going to have to go in a different direction with our offense, today we start" Come out of hiding Jeff

Y would u get rid of a coach that players like. That would be pointless.

You're preaching to the choir, man. None of these guys who want him gone think about this stuff. They just spout off because they are frustrated. There's no actual thought that goes into anything. And DC, I think you forget just how bad it ACTUALLY was under Cameron. We were hopeless!! We weren't even in a lot of the games and the effort wasn't there. Cleo Lemon played for us and as bad as a lot of the guys wants to make out how bad Henne is, he is nowhere near as bad as Lemon was.

Wolfman, you're right on. You're talking about a new coach, a new system, a new DC, which means new players because our guys have been drafted to play in a 3-4 and not a 4-3. It would be chaos!

Craig M, on your post to DB, you're absolutely right.....it is time for Nolan and Marshall to show professionalism and bury the hatchet.....in Henning's forehead! LOL

Sky, Wont hurt Henning(Hatchit to the had),He's been dead for sometime now....

Cardinals are currently 4-10 and dead last in the nfc west. Still offensively they have score more points(255pts) than us(239pts). Somehow he's managed that with an even worse qb than Chad Henne(17th ranked). He's done it with Derek Anderson(27th ranked).

Say the Cards finish 4-12 and Ken Whisenhunt is fired. Cowher becomes our HC, since the two have worked together before, Whisenhunt percievably is named our HC.

So what would you think about a Dolphin coaching staff of:

HC- Bill Cowher
OC- Ken Whisenhunt
DC- Mike Nolan

Whoops, you're right, I think he was one of the actors in Zombieland!

If Ross were to go to the players they would stick up for Sparano. He treats them like professionals and doesn't throw them under the bus, as other coaches do. Practice hard, have a good attitude, keep your nose clean and show up on Sunday and you will play on Sparano's team? It partly why he liked Patrick Cobbs, pre-injury. Another reason to like this coach, we have heard no-infighting from this team and they still show up and give effort every Sunday. I think the players are well aware of what the problem is on this team. Change the OC, add some players to the offence and it's a whole different team.

Also a staff of Bill Cowher, Ken Whisenhunt, and Mike Nolan all have SB experience. This would sound like a match made in heaven for our franchise. Plus you have both OC and DC to bring Cowher quickly up to speed concerning today's nfl.

We just basically would need Cowher's "gameday experience" which the inexperienced Sparano sorely lacks. Plus with Cowher team discipline remains instilled.

Craig, I agree, But my only concern is they really like him, but on Sunday, they all are not bleeding to win for him or themselves. I watched Vonte, Smith, Crowder, Dobbins and a few others jog once they were beat, instead of sprinting to make a play from behind. that is not the effort these players should be giving. I guess my point is, they like him because he respects them, but they may not be giving the best effort for him...

The teams ownership was not commited to winning when 3 years ago they sought out the Tuna to fix a team that is stuck in the shadow of the era that ened 14 years ago and has never been even close to being any better than Shula's worst with one demensional Marino.

This is a winning franshise that has not won a SB in nearly 40 years or least contend for one in years, we need a marquee coach and staff with a marquee QB.

Bye, Bye Sparano you've proven that your just an offense line coach that was faking it and now you've been found out - quit at the end of the season so that the owners are forced to react as they've been asleep at the wheel!

What I LOVED about Sparano in '08 is how he made a huge deal of winning in Dec. He talked about it frequently. And Miami historically was a team that won early and lost late. But Sparano changed that (at least the mindset).

But last year (and this year), we're reverting, and now not so great at the beginning of the season either. This team needs to learn how to play it's best ball in DEC (like San Diego). That's when it all matters.

First of all, I don't believe the Cards will fire Whisenhunt. Everyone knows that the team has gone downhill without Warner and with the depratures of Rolle, Dansby and Boldin. I think the Cards will draft a QB this year and I think they will want Whisenhunt there to bring the young QB along. I get the Cowher/Whisenhunt connection but I'm not sure it works with Nolan. they have no connection to each other and I'm pretty sure Cowher would want to bring his own DC in.

ok first. If thats what is really coming out of sparano's mouth than he isnt watching the same games we as fans are watching. How can he sit there and defend Henning?.

Sparano is still loyal to the Tuna and with Henning, Sparano, Ireland, and Parcells all being part of that coaching tree we hear so much about, what else is Tony going to spew. Anyone with half a brain knows Tony has to protect a longtime parcells guy.

Mr Ross

if you read this blog and im sure you do as this blog can be like a stock watch of your investiment. We the stock holders are not happy and are fed up with shoddy offensive thinking and using gimmicks and tricks to fool vanilla defenses.

This once proud franchise is just another NFL team with no Championship in the past 30 + yrs. Too many years have been wasted on broken promises and prima donna coaches and overrated players being added to this roster and not coming through when most needed. Do what needs to be done and put your stamp on this front office. Fire all reminace of the Parcells era, as hes just an ego who ran off with your money and didnt care what things looked like at the end of the day. Fire his guys in Sparano and Ireland and lets clenze the Tuna smell out of the building

Help us Mr Ross, your our only hope.
