Sparano has no endorsement but gives one to Henning

Tony Sparano has not seen Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is some time and consequently has not received any assurances he will continue to be the Dolphins head coach in 2011. But, in case you're wondering, he is endorsing offensive coordinator Dan Henning as his guy.

Sparano was asked during today's press conference if he has met with Ross recently.

“I haven’t visited with him, no, and that’s not my problem right now,” Sparano said. “My problem is to get ready for the Detroit Lions. That’s what I’m charged with.”

For the sake of clarification, I asked Sparano if he's received any sort of endorsement or assurance from Ross that he will be the Miami coach in 2010. He has not.

“I just need to get my team to get ready to play this week," he said. "That's what I need to do. Everything is else is beyond my control. Let someone else deal with it."

Sparano must deal with picking a coach to run Miami's offense in 2011. I have reported previously that most people in the Dolphins facility expect offensive coordinator Dan Henning to retire. But if Henning were to get a wild-hair idea about returning in 2011 after his unit finished 31st in the NFL in scoring (where it currently ranks), Sparano sounds like he'd be fine with that.

“I think that Dan Henning, for Tony Sparano, has been tremendous,” Sparano said, using the often fatal third-person reference to himself in his speech. “I think the guy has done a wonderful job during my time here. I look at the entire body of work, you guys just look at the last three or four games.

"I look at the whole body of work and this guy has done a tremendous job. He’s the same guy that we were all talking about, ‘Man oh man, he finds the ways to use the personnel to the best of their ability.’ That was you people saying that not me. So I would tell you for Tony Sparano Dan Henning has been tremendous. It's easy to point blame, fellas, and I get it. it comes with the territory. That's the way it goes. I need to do a better job. Tony Sparano needs to do a better job.”

Here's my thinking: Sparano went overboard to defend Henning. I don't believe that was by accident. And I hope he fully intends to see Henning off with a gold watch or whatever the Dolphins give their retiring assistants who had terrible seasons.

Ultimately, Sparano will be judged by whether, in fact, Henning returns next year. I believe if he makes the pitch to Ross that he just made to the public about Henning, he will lose all credibility with the owner. I don't think that will happen. I think, I hope that was just for public consumption.

I just wish coach would realize we're not stupid. Dumb, maybe. But not stupid. We understand he's saying something that ultimately won't mean squat. So why say it and hurt your credibility?

... Unless, of course, he actually means this stuff with the zeal he used, in which case I would seriously worry about this franchise's future.

Dying.. This is a serious question, I don't want to come across as a complete bafoon. But who does the hiring as far as staff? Does it depend on how much power the head coach has? Or does the hiring come from the manegment-owner? Did Sparano have any say in the hiring of Henning? It seems like he was put into place, the same way Sparano was. By Parcells. I think it ultimatley comes down on the owner. I would like for him to make a statement the day after the season ends about the staff. If this means bye bye Tony I wouldn't lose much sleep. If it meant Sparano gets a stay of execution, I would be fine with that as well. If the hammer does come down, and Sparano gets sacked. My hope would be that the new regime would bring in an attitude that can change the culture of this team that seems to be stricken with mediocraty.(easier said then done)

LP,

Right bro! There isn't much to say to Brees throwing ints. His team won a Super Bowl and for that matter Eli has one too. However, Bress throws for 300 3 TDs and 1 int and his team wins. Henne throws for 300 2 TDs and 2 Ints in a LOSS.

Mike Vick Rules!

Any Questions!?

canned ravioli again, eh ALoco? lol

We all would like to have that magical fantasy coach. A coach where we win 10 consecutive SB's and rule the division and nfl with impunity. Welcome to reality, the closest thing to that coach resides in Foxboro.

Our best chances of once again becoming consistently legitimate is setting our mark at the wizard of Foxboro.

Reality check again: "Of the available Candidates" available being the key word here guys, Who offers the the highest percentaged chance of coming closest to matching the wizard of Foxboro?

Dont know what everyone elses conclussion is but mine by default of "Available" coaches is clearly Bill Cowher. Is he the absolute perfect HC? I think not.

Is he the best available coach when highly considering creedence of track record? I overwhelmingly arrive at an answer of HELL YES!!!

I am not as concerned about Henne's int's as much. Even the best throw them. what I am concerned about is his lack of pocket presence. he does not feel pressure, and under pressure he makes some of the most god awful decisions I have seen in a while.

that being said, some or many of those decisions might be because he is playing scared, and looking over his shoulder at his coaches.

GRAIG M, Can you tell the masses what WADE . P CAN CO ORDINATE ?

The New World Order great recession will be followed by the great HAARP freeze of 2010 & 2011

Have a HAARPy day :(

Hug your children
God Bless

Don't let him dogsit tho!

WTF Aloco, and I go home to leftover Pizza??? Somethings not right here...

Andy NJ -i hope it's just my pessimism......I just have this gut wrenching feeling that they're going to let sparano play out the last year of his contract. I'm also very concerned that more than a few teams are going to be interested in Nolan.

ALoco,

As a defensive co-ordinator Wade P is one of the best in the business. However, he is NEVER a head coach in this league, nor should he ever be considered for one again.

THANKS,GRAIG .I DIDN'T KNOW THAT .

Craig,

Does your opinion of Sparano change if he keeps Henning as his OC as the columnist suggests?

NFL MVP Mike Vick had a monster game in Sunday's 38-31 win over the Giants, throwing for 242 yards with three touchdowns and running for 130 yards with a score on the ground.
Spin: Vick was awesome in the second half, throwing for over 200 yards, making a bunch of long runs, and accounting for four touchdowns to help Philadelphia overcome a 21-point deficit. Vick had somewhat struggled against strong defenses, feasting on weaker opponents, but that was not the case Sunday - he was spectacular.

wolfman1313,

Only a team that already has a strong offense, pultrid defense and lousy record would be interested in Nolan. To me he would most likely be tailor made to go back to Denver as HC under those conditions.

Just dont see Pat Bolen bringing him back to Denver after firing the man that pretty much fired him. But still I see Denver as the strongest candidate to want Nolan as HC.

Then still without Josh McDaniels offensive style and guidance will they still be offensively potent? A safer bet is Nolan lands on no one's list as HC. I expect maybe an interview or two will be the full extent of it.

M.VICK HE CHANGED HOW FOOTBALL SHOULD BE PLAYED.

TOM BRADY HAS CHANGED HOW PEOPLE LOOK AT MIDGETS.

Absolutely returnmeigs! He's gone if he tries to keep Henning. It didn't work this year....we need to makes changes.

I am an idiot.

Merry Christmas

How can Drew Stanton of Detroit a 3rd string QB do better with a Detroit team and win and look better than Henne in his last two games. He show more emotion and the coaches must have something to do with it.

Vick!

and Penne,Henne and Pigpen,
well ... ... ... ..... ... u know :(

No way Sparano get's to play out his last year here with, especially Cowher, publically stating Miami as #2 on his landing spots list. Giants will make the playoffs, more than likely will advance to the 2nd rd of the playoffs in a weak nfc, and I have never seen an nfl coach fired when accomplishing those two things.

Basically Cowher publically announced to Stephen Ross that he want the Miami job while not neccessarily solely stepping on Tony Sparano's toes. Why else announce the Giants as the #1 destination when their record states its the most likely place where the HC wont be fired?

Only sense that would make is if Coughlin privately confided in Cowher he would retire at seasons end no matter what. If this didnt happen it's a very strong message to Mr. Ross of "give me a call" if you feel the same way too.

canned spam sandwiches on bleached bread and no name yellow mustard again, Darryl lol

wolfman1313,

Good point on Nolan. There is a chance another team offers him a promotion before Miami does. I haven't thought about that one. Good point!

The point of this season has been to sell mass quanities of liquor during the home games! The wildcat has been euthanized, ultimate responsibility falls on the head coach, just because he wants to dole out the bus tossing postseason in private, does not make him Mr. Niceguy. Compared to Saban he may seem like a saint, but in this case self preservation is the piper he follows. Like timeouts he only has so many fingers to point, like the poker player, only revealing as little of his hand, till you know he's been bluffing all along!

THE HC HAS INTEGRITY SOME THING MOST BLOGGERS IN HERE NEVER HEARD OF ,HE STICK BY HENNING B/C HE HAS INTEGRITY AND HENNING DID A LOT OF GOOD LAST FEW YEARS .

DARRYL. MERRY CHRISTMAS

Darryl, it's different with every team. Some coaches have total control. Others have GMs that hire and fire.

The way this abortion happened was, Huizenga hired Parcells as vice pres football op. He hired everybody else incl our ball boy GM.

Cowher realistically will be what puts fannies in the seats in Chemtrail Death Stadium next year

Without Cowher and almost no points scored at Chemtrail Death Stadium

Expect fans to say no thanks

Now Sparano deserves to get fired
We pay to see a good contest and score points at Home

Sparano refused to deliver
and did not have the balls to get rid of the problem ... Dan Henning

No he must walk the plank!

AndyJ,

I believe both you and wolfman1313 are very wrong. Nolan will recieve 1 or 2 coaching vacancies interviews at best. One here and he may even interview in Denver. He'll be neither team's final choice.

He may recieve one other darkhorse candidate interview but greater chances are he's turned down for that job too. Hope neither you nor wolfman1313 hold your breaths on Nolan becoming a HC in 2011.

But he may end up somewhere else in 2012 by default when those HC vacancies open up.

DRRYL, I WENT LAST NIGHT TO A CHRISTMAS PARTY AND THEY THE SHRIMP COCKTAIL CRAP ,I CAN TELL THE SHRIMP WAS FROZEN COLD IN VIETNAM AND TASTED LIKE RUPPER .

DB,

You're right Denver would be a good spot for Nolan but I have a funny feeling Bowlen will want a 'name' Head Coach and I have a funny feeling that Gruden will get first crack at it. I know Gruden is hugely enamored with Tebow and would love the chance to work with him.

And DB, let's remember this stuff about where Cowher wants to coach...I have YET to hear Bill Cowher come right out and say it. There's a lot of agent talk etc going on right now and until I actually hear it from him I would believe a thing. Let's remember Parcells stiff the Bucs once in a coaching gig and then the Falcons in the same role he took with us.

DB,

If Sparano doesn't get the job done next year, I would be fine with Nolan being considered for the HC job for 2012. I agree he may still have a chance as a HC but I'm not ready to turn this team over to him for 2011. Sparano is who I want back for next season. No question....

you tube seach henne is a joke...

you'll laugh and laugh and laugh

DyingBreed,

I was just saying wolf made a good point there is a possibility and I didn't think of it yet but it is a realistic chance. He is a great and I mean GREAT D coodinator. He turned around Denver and Miami in respective years. I think he has an eye for exploiting match ups and getting the most from his players. There are many Offensive and Defensive coordinators who are good but fail as coaches I understand that but I just like him and his attention detail. He failed because his first round draft pick and #1 overall failed in Alex Smith. That would set any coach back especially a relatively unknown coach.

I'm not sure who Miami's next Head Coach is but I would prefer Mike Nolan because he knows the team already and has done HIS JOB this year.

In order I would prefer Nolan, Gruden and then Cowher.

How I think the team would see it out of them 3 and not saying they would hire any of them but Id say they'd do Cowher, Gruden, Nolan.

I'll remind everyone that there were rumours that Cowher would get fired before he won his Super Bowl with Pittsburgh and rumours that Coughlin would get fired before his Super Bowl win in New York. Both those guys survived and it was the right decision for the organization.

Home,

Correct, Cowher will put fannies back at our home games.

Cocoajoe,

In my eyes the abortion began when Joe Robbie died. We werent officially on our way to the abortion clinic until his siblings sold to Wayne Huizenga. The abortion was officially consumated when JJ gave passed all power over to Wannstadt and Huizenga blessed it.

Little did any of us know at the time of Joe Robbie's death, that our frachise was headed for abortion from what we once new it.

I am a crackhead.

GOOD POINT GRAG M @ 6;25 PM. DYING BREED LOVES TO GET COHWER THEN STAB HIM WITH KNIVES AT FIRST CHANCE .

Stanford and Flynn looked way better than Henne has...and they had control of the speed of the NFL

Craig M> I definitely agree we have to have at minimum a new OC. I still think we can improve at Head Coach with who's out there.

My concerns about Sparano are many, but lack of "big game" efforts really are troublesome. The two (or three) "elimination games" last year resulted in three absolutely miserable first half efforts versus Titans, Texans, and Steelers. A poor playoff appearance against the Ravens, and now this year's absolute collapse at home in must win games against the Browns and Bills. His teams don't seem to be inspired with the season on the line, I don't know if he can show great improvement with a new offensive coordinator. Is it worth the risk of losing a potentially great coach for the next several years to see if Sparano is the real deal???

His undying support of Henning brings clearly into the open exactly why the Dolphins find themselves in the place they are. A fair description of the offense that Parcells, Ireland, Sparano, Henning and David Lee have put together using this incompetent, robotic, clueless experiment of a QB (from Michigan..LOL) called Chad Henne would be to liken it to a bunch of monkeys trying to f*ck a football! Tell me it ain't so?

COWKILL... YOU MEAN DREW STANTON AND MATT FLYNN NOT STANFORD WH'S HAVING A SHOULDER INJURY .

THE MEDIA LOVE FOR SPARANO TO GET FIRED TO INCREASE THEIR BIZ AND MORE VICTIMS TO ATTACK .

Lotta truth in that Dying. Huizenga wanted a winning team but didn't know how to go about it.

Everybody knows these billionaire owners don't know football. But you would think with their money, they would hire a warehouse full of experts to advise them. Maybe it's just ego on their part.

CraigM,

We all know Mr. Ross has a flair for the extravagant and one of his primary goals is to put fans back into the stadium seats. This wont happen if Sparano gets another year nor will it happen promoting Nolan to HC. This alone pretty much rules out Sparano's return or Nolan's promotion.

This brings us to the most obvious question Cowher or Gruden? I believe with Mr. Ross Cowher will be the first choice. If for some reason Cowher isnt available I see Gruden landing here.

Knowing Mr. Ross' primary goal is also bring fans back to the stadium. I believe there are only 2 viable candidates in his eyes. "Cowher or Gruden." Its Ross' wallett and as fans we can wish whatever we want.

Bottomline with Ross: The HC hiring will be based soley on best opportunity to win and filling the home stadium. Cha-ching$$$$$$

returnmeigs,

I think you have to put some of that a young quarterback still learning and still trying to find himself in the NFL and working in a system that isn't suited for him. Don't forget we were able to win the first two cames of the year and we did win in Green Bay and beat the Jets last week. Those are no small feats.

IN TYHE MOVIE ( SCENT OF A WOMAN ) , AL PACINO IN A VERY GOOD SCENE OF THE MOVIE HE WAS TALKING ( CHRIS O'DONNELL ) WHEN HE SAID TO HIM ....CHARLIE ,YOU HAVE INTEGRITY CHARLIE .

SPARANO , YOU HAVE INTEGRITY TONY

Just saw this on ESPN....that Cowher was interested in coaching the Dolphins,Giants and Texans !

Guys,

Plus if Ross promoted Nolan to HC when both Gruden and Cowher were available, can you imagine the backlash by fans after every loss?

If Nolan didnt direct us to a title Ross would easily surpass Wayne Huizenga in staus of villainousness in they hatred marred eyes of Miami fans.

what if the giants go for cowher. I think if that happens we need to get rid of sparano and grab coughlin right away. He's much better than sparano

are we the only nfl team that doesnt have a 2 minute "hurry up" offense?????? they should all go on the offense;sparano, henning, henne and david lee! high schools run better hurry up offenses. our guys dont even rush to line-up or have 2plays called. like tom brady said "line em up and spread em out". why doesnt sparano run tape on pats offense to LEARN.

when an opposing player tells you they knew what was coming on several plays during crunch time and they defensed them correctly,i think that pretty much says it all.3 years of terrible drafts and free agency moves have left us where we started,no qb,no o-line,no playmakers,no player that the opponent has to game plan for,no team speed,a wannestedian approach to offense, its pathetic, ive been rooting for the fins since they began playing.i dont know how much more i can stand of complete incompetence from all levels of the organization.please make it stop d.ross

I JUST SAW THAT IN ESPEN, COHWER WANTS TO GO TO WHOME EVER CAN GIVE him THE MOST money W/THE MOST PRO COHWER CONTRACT .lol

DB,

Ross only cares that he's getting the sellouts and the streak is up to 100. Would it be nice to get the fans out to the game and spending money, of course. I don't believe fans come out because of a coach, be it Cowher or Gruden or anyone else. I believe fans will come out to support a winning product and I feel the best way to do that, for next season, is to give Sparano a new OC and give Henne some new weapons on offence. Having said that, I could see Ross seeing things from your point of view, however, I will suggest that I believe it is short-sighted thinking.

Bill Cowher - That's all I have to say!

DyingBreed - what about Houston? I think they fit that bill. Great offense....no defense. How about Carolina.....they don't have a great anything. I'm more worried about miami losing the best coach they have at this point.

In regards to Cowher.....just not sold that he wouldn't want to go back to that 4 - 3 and we have 3 - 4 personnel. What does Cowher bring to the table offensively? I wanna love him and I did when he was in Pitt but not sold on this fit.

Cowher's first three years as Head Coach:

1992 Division Champions lost AFC divisional
1993 2nd in Division, lost Wild Card
1994 Division Champions, lost AFC Championship
and after:
1995 Division Champions, Lost Super Bowl
1996 Division Champions, Lost AFC Divisional
1997 Division Champions, Lost AFC Championship

1998 3rd Place
1999 4th place
2000 3rd place
2001 1st Place, lost AFC Championship
2002 1st Place, lost AFC Divisional
2003 3rd Place
2004 1st Place, Lost AFC Championship
2005 2nd Place, Super Bowl Champions
2006 3rd Place

Sparano:

2008 1st Place, Lost AFC Wildcard
2009 3rd Place
2010 3rd Place

whatever you think of Sparano, Cowher has an impressive resume in my opinion...

My God...

This news is nothing short of absolutely terrifying, horrifying and mortifying!!!

Seriously, does Sparano WANT to give every DolFan a heart attack???

He couldn't have done a better job of making sure nobody comes to the Lions game if he tried.

Boulder,

Coughlin would be an intriguing option. I still think we've got the best option in place right now, at least for one more year.
