The day-after QB frustration and tripping indignation

The Dolphins remain a hopeful bunch this morning.

Coach Tony Sparano will hold his day-after press conference in a couple of hours and, at some point, likely point out that the Dolphins remain in the playoff chase with a handful of other 7-6 teams and so, "Why not us?"

The Dolphins should win the next two games. They host the Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions. Those teams have combined for six wins. But it is that season-finale at New England that looms difficult for the Dolphins if the Patriots are of the mind to play all their players and not lay down.

That game could be the difference between 10-6 and a chance to be in the playoffs, and 9-7 and practically no chance to be in the playoffs. Of course, the Dolphins must do work against Buffalo and Detroit first. It is still a long shot and, as I point out in my column today, Miami's quarterback situation is not good right now.

Don't get me wrong. Miami's QB play is fine compared to the reeling Jets. But compared to playoff teams, particularly the New England Patriots? Not so good.

The truth is it seems Chad Henne is regressing. He used to have one good game, one questionable game. Since coming back from his knee injury, he's had one good game (Oakland) and two bad games (Cleveland and New York).

Very frustrating for any Dolphins fan hoping for a franchise QB, hoping for playoff relevance, hoping for a chance to have their team do something special.

Dolphins fans, by the way, were angry Sunday evening after Jets strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi tripped Miami special teams flyer Nolan Carroll along the Jets sideline. It was a dirty move and Alosi eventually released a statement in which he apologized for the "unsportsmanlike" move.

But while Carroll, who eventually got an apology from Alosi, didn't think much of it, several Miami players were indignant. Consider their reaction in this Miami Minute courtesy The Herald's Jeff Darlington:

Lookit - After Brady, Manning and Roethlis. is Henne really that far off from the rest of the QBs in the AFC? Even Manning is lost now w/o Harrison and Clark and Addai.

I don't see any upgrades at QB for next year we draft a WR with some speed (wallace on Pitt or Jackson on Phila); OL, RB and stop yanking Henne off the field every 5 secs so he can just play and not think as much. And FGS dump the kittycat like yesterdays litter box. Henne throws his best pass of the game to Fasano and then Henning yanks hims and runs the kitty cat. Next play he fumbles.

tdeck, there was a reason Thigpen has been third string QB all this year. There was a reason he was 1-11 not 1-15 btw in KC. There is a reason that the football coaches, who watch Thigpen practice, day after day why they are not putting him in. Thigpen is not a starting QB, he was not drafted to be a starting QB.Thigpen is an emergency QB, third string backup in the minds of the experts, the football coaches, need to respect that people have more knowledge about Thigpen then you and me.

Mr. Salguero, there are no gimmes in the NFL.

It's a beautiful gray day in NY, overcast, dreary, temps in the 30's and miserable Jerks fans all over the place. Happy Monday!

Don't know what's going on with the Jets(they have a good Team) but don't really care. I have enough worries with my own.

Nice post 2:59 Odin,

The team is totally hamstrung with Henning. With an innovative OC who had the courage and vision to utilize strengths and protect weakness in talent the team could have several more wins.

Also, let's not forget this is Sparano's offense and he has signed off on this nonsense all season long.

aloco,henne still sux.lol

If the choice is elevate or lose Nolan...........buh-bye Tony. And Take Gramps with you, and also Young Master Chaddeus if possible.

Posted by: The Seer

How dare you question Young Master Chaddeus??!! He is a master @ developing into being a good NFL QB! The majority of this mob will find and behead you if you ever dare agin to question the Young Master Chaddeus!!!!

History repeats.

1986 Jets crippled and ended the career of Dolphin Hall of Fame Center Dwight Stephenson in a post play cheap shot. The offender was former Stephenson ALA teammate Marty Lyons.

This time it was a NFL coach out of play. And the official who let it go. This is a Jack Tatum Conrad Dobler style of criminal play.

Maximum penalty and firing of Jet coach is required here. If not, payback is imminent.

hardcore, right now, it's not a matter of being a franchise QB or not - simply - he's the best qb on the roster - and guess what - he will also be the best qb on the roster for next year too. There aren't enough qbs to go around. Not even the best teams have 2 qbs who can play and more than half don't even have one - so nobody is going to hand you one. So what options do you have - hate on Henne and be happy when he fails or support him as a fan and hope he can find the groove again this year and carry it into next year - that's it!

Do you really think Trent Edwards or Jon Kitna or even Carson palmer are better than Henne? I don't think so. So what choice do we have? Hope Henne comes around and draft a qb in April - that's it.

Nice post, Odin.

It seems this whole team (not just offense) is held hostage by Henning. We're reliant on Carpenter to score points and Fields to make up for ungained grounds. Nolan and the defense are going to have to find ways to win here on out. This puts the onus on defense to catch INTs. Likewise, Sparano's fate is in Henning's hands as well.

Did anyone notice what the Dolphins were going to do on 3rd and 7 before Henne fumbled? Run in order to kick a field goal. This so we could get the 10 point lead in the 3rd qtr.

Any thoughts?

Real nice post Odin BTW

Thanks Aloco,

The roof on MY HOUSE is about to collapse from snow and my freaking pipes are freezing up, but I'm HAPPY.

I'm happy because the defense Nolan has got together. I am looking to next season and that sucks, but this defense will help us get through a lot of tough offensive problems. If we can put together any kind of offense at all, this defense will make us competitive right away. So yeah as a Miami Dolphin fan I'm HAPPY!

As far as Chad Henne, it is what it is. He's a talented young QB experiencing some big sophomore troubles.

I think the answer is quite simple though. We really have no choice at this point other than let him continue to develop. He either sinks or swims and we find out sooner rather than later.

We keep Thigpen and bring in as many QB's as we can to push Henne, whether they be rookie draft picks or vets.

The most important thing, I think, is to get a solid innovative OC that's not stuck on stupid. Whatever QB wins the training camp battle, we need to have a legitimate system in place and surround them with as much talent as we can possibly dredge up.

I don't think it's any big mystery and I'm personally getting tired of hearing all the crybabies.

I'm HAPPY because this DEFENSE is going to make any offense we put on the field instantly competitive next year!

AwRiiiight MIAMI!!!!

Mark in Toronto,

Playing for FG's is what Sparano/Henning have done all year and it has cost the Dolphins several games.

Henning wastes at least half the drives every game.

Im going all the way to the top floor of the Empire State building and jumping off with this one. So PLEEZE give me a huge net.

Henne either exorcised ALL demons yesterday or he'll flat out suck the rest of very limited nfl career. Doesnt get any worse than 5 completions for a extremely meager 58yds for any nfl qb over 4qtrs of football.

Henne cant do any worse and there's nowhere to go but up now for Henne. The worst of the worst is over. Next game will be the single most important game of Henne's entire brief carrer. Im basing next game on whether Henne's in or out as our future qb,

As I said, Im jumping top floor of the Epire State building. PLEEZE give me a huge net. LOL..........

Mark in Toronto, that is exactly what they were going to do. Which I know is aggravating as hell but that's how they think. I would rather see them go for the kill but as usual we get to wait till the last seconds to know if we are gonna win or lose

The question remains who will be the next OC?

For some reason I think Chucky wants an aggressive offense and could be an answer. I dont think the Eagles OC is going anywhere.

I like how aggressive Chip Kelly up here at Oregon is but he is not going anywhere.

Odin, I will give you a giant net because I don't think the staff will give Henne much opportunity to throw. The Bills have the worst rush D in the league. Henning is dreaming of 48 differenct wildcat plays as we speak. This game will look muhc like week 1 although it will be difficult to hold Fitzpatrick to 10 points - he can play.

If Ross can find the balls to cut bait with Sparano/Henning/Ireland one upside is the emerging D.

Odin is right, the D is getting to where is some offense can be added then this team is not far away from being competitive.

However, the Dolphins will never be primer with Sparano. IMO.

A BUST OR NOT A BUST ? RATTING OF 69......................

just to put the QB stinkage in perspective, here's Bob Griese's stats line from the 1972 superbowl...

8-11 for 88 yards. 1 TD and 1 INT. Long pass of 28 yards.

Griese had 5 games with under a 100 yards passing that year. I know it's a different era, but I don't think it's all on Henne.

the bills dont have the talent we do but are playing well and overachieving. fitzpatrick can run and throw;seems confident in his ability's. maybe it will rub off on henne who cant play any worse. he is really struggling in the pocket;acts like a scared rabbit.

If there's any kind of professional football player and personal pride left in Henne after 5-18 for 58yds, he should have one of his best career games Sunday. If not, you can stick a fork in him and turn off the ovens because he's definitely done.

I'm holding out on giving him just one more game to prove his worth. Anything less than a 89 qb rating and 2 passing tds, we can take out the garbage. Because Henne will have proven to byond all doubt, that's all he'll ever be.

After a 5-18 58yd passing performance, it's beyond just a crappy coordinator and all about integrity, pride, and intestinal fortitude.

It can't be mere coincidence that six Jets staff members stood in unison right on the sideline. This Tripping-Gate is about to get uglier. Alosi is just the beginning. Bring in Bernstein and Woodward!

Larry Czonka broke and set a new rushing yardage mark in SBVI. We didnt need to pass. Were you even born then little buddy?

Where was the Fake Spike Play!
I demand Answers!

Sid Rosenberg is on with his ex-partner up on WFAN in NY. He is saying Henne has nothing to work with compared to Sanchez, as far as talent surrounding him. Ricky n Ronnie are not in their prime, and besides Marshall and Bess, it's not a lot of talent to work with.

Instead of drafting a qb, because we wont be in position to draft one even worthy of shaking a contract at. Luring Carson Palmer away from Cincinatti may be our best option.

Before you guys crucify me think about how well would any of the other great qb's do in that 3 Ring Circus called the Bengals. Carson Palmer has gotta want out of that already by now.

TJH, good point, but Griese had Larry Czonka, who was almost unstoppable running the ball for 4-5 yds or more each down. with the running game Griese had, he didnt need to pass the ball, they just ran it 95% of the time!

Where was Vinny Touchthebirdy!

Henne doesn't have a problem. The team has a problem. Everyone is in this guys head. Penne is on the sideline with the qb coach, the recievers all jabbering bs, do this or do that or do this and then that with this.
Are they showing him defences?,,, Nope, they are telling him to throw it away or outside and this is how you should do it.

Like trying to coach a guy in the middle of his golf swing.
Henne needs to get in a fight. Win or lose. He also needs to get caught doing something mean. Like a low block or something.

Everyone should just tell him to do his job and get off his case and leave him alone.

The defence played great.

Santonio Holmes to his Bookie; "Ya Happy now Foo!" "We Even!"

Telling it like it is!!

Cameron Wake is Clubber Lang! Relentless!

Game Ball to the PUNTER! LMAO!

One of his Punts equals all of Henne's passing yards!

Same old Dolphin fans....whine and complain....blah, blah, blah.

Atrocious game yesterday by Henne.....no doubt!
But let's take the victory and move on. I have no doubt that Sparano will be back next season, unless the team does a complete tank job the last three games and I don't see it happening. The players are still playing hard for themselves and this coach.

DyingB, i guess we were thinking along the same lines regarding TJH, Palmer has to want to get away from TO and 85.....TO is blaming Palmer for everything....but he'd only be a stopgap measure.....i dont know he'd be the answer. just my opinion

My DVR reached its Punt limit and didn't get to see the last 37 of them! If FGs are Fist Pumps, what are Punts?

I watched the whole game with a bad Hammy, a broken finger, and a shoulder brace.

To those feeling bad for Henne: Please don't. He's a man. He needs to strap on a pair and either lead the team and stop making bonehead plays, or get the f*** out of town.

The Dolphins Can't win at "Home'

There's Too much Music and Distraction at "Home"

How many people have ever heard of a Home Stadium that is so unfriendly to the 'Home Team?'

Let the players play F O O T B A L L !!!

heh heh, I was born, and even out of diapers by 1972. I'll buy the "Czonka made passing unnecessary" argument as well, but I'm not ready to give up on Henne just yet. Maybe I'm just being a dumb fan, but I gotta root for the guy.

On a serious note...

Seeing marked improvement on-

Special Teams and limiting big plays on Defense from the start of the year. Definitely no quit in these guys. Sparano gets another year from where I sit. Gotta get Nolan back somehow too.

I guess you didn't watch the Cinci/Pit game yesterday? The pick that Palmer through to the Steelers on his own ten that was taken in for a TD was something that Henne on his worst day would do. I agree that Palmer needs a change of scenery but I'm not sure what bringing him to Miami would do. He would be a short term answer and I don't know what that would do for our franchise going forward. I'll also remind everyone that Henne now has a won/loss record of 14-12 in his career as a starter, not great, bit certainly not bad for a two year starter. I think it's something to build on.

Seems like Palmer has been around forever doesnt it. Guess what, this is only his 8th season. it's not uncommon for a good qb to be around 12-13 seasons.

Palmer has at least 4-5yrs of really high level of tread left on his nfl tires. To me he's a better option than the 2011 draft because anyone outside of Andrew Luck is a borderline insane gamble.

Henne is done! Pack him up and sell him while he brings some value. Try like heck to get Andrew Luck that's the guy on whose shoulders you can build a franchise. It's not that Henne has bad physical aptitude it's his mental ineptitude that completely baffles me. You can tell he has been told over and over again "...don't make a mistake throw the ball away." Heck, he is listening for the footsteps so he can throw the ball away and only as a an afterthought will he look to throw the ball to a receiver. He will never find or I should say he will seldom find a receiver wide open in the NFL. He has to learn to fire the ball in to a receivers gut or loft it up to a Brandon Marshall and let him fight for it, Marshall is not called "The Beast" for nothing. It's because he is a beast when he goes for the ball BUT get the ball to MARSHALL any where near him. If you miss Oh well but at least you tried. I hated seeing him throw all those balls away. Henne needs to have a little FUN while playing ball... it is, after all a GAME.

I don't really understand all the negativity after a Dolphin VICTORY on the road! What must the comments be from Jet fans today, who once again are falling apart when it matters most.

We got the victory guys.....it's time to get off the 'replace Henne' bandwagon and start thinking about our next game. And I'll throw this one out there too...I'm not making excuses for Henne because he's had some games where he's really struggled but do any of us actually know just how healthy he is? He has a reputation for being tough and playing through pain but can any of us actually say what kind of condition he's in? I fully expect he'll need surgery on his knee after the season. So go ahead and rip him game in and game out but none of you the seriousness of his injury.

I don't know why Sanchezz not being any better than Henne is a surprise to anyone or even a topic of discussion - I'v been saying this for months. Even referencing the weapons - and some people talked about his 4th qtr comebacks or his team records.

Fact the jets only beat the Lions because they gooned their kicker and forced Suh to make an extra point. And they only beat the Browns because Stuckey fumbled in field goal range in overtime.

The line seperating the Dolphins and Jets right now is not as big as the disparity in their records. It's paper thin. And add to that how much younger our team is than theirs and I feel much more confident about our future. And the Jets don't have much of a present either. Even if they do sneak into the playoffs - they will lose thier first game against either San Diego or Indy.

TJH, just cause you criticize part or all of the team doesnt mean youre not a fan. we are all frustrated to some extent with something or other. its just that this year, the defense has improved and the offense has not, so the point man for the offense is henne, so he takes most of the heat, deserved or not. frankly, i dont think he is THE guy, not under this current system.

Craig M @ 4:43, you stole my post.

Carson palmer - already matured is no better than Henne - that would eb a move down in my opinion.

I've also been saying for awhile that Sanchez is no better than Henne. All this hype about him etc....blah, blah, blah.... The Dolphins should have beat the Steelers and Browns. The Jets should have lost to the Browns, the Lions and even the Broncos. They have a lot of free agents after this season, with guys like Holmes and Edwards and they've traded draft picks for the guys they have. They were going for it this year and they are going to come up short. I would rather be in our position with Henne and our defence than the Jets position. They also have a much older team.

And for all you clowns who want a 'can't miss' quarterback taken in the first round, I'll remind you that Sanchez was a top five pick. They are now thinking of benching him for his 38 year old backup. Think about these things before you decide you want to give up on a 25 year old quarterback and invest time, effort and money into some guy who was good in College. Some of you guys never learn.....

DyingB, you used car salesman, lol, youre good at making your point, but how about kyle orton, things are changing in denver, he might become available and he definitely has 'chemistry' with marshall. throw in bess hartline and fasano......orton would look good. just a thought for discussion.
