The day-after QB frustration and tripping indignation

The Dolphins remain a hopeful bunch this morning.

Coach Tony Sparano will hold his day-after press conference in a couple of hours and, at some point, likely point out that the Dolphins remain in the playoff chase with a handful of other 7-6 teams and so, "Why not us?"

The Dolphins should win the next two games. They host the Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions. Those teams have combined for six wins. But it is that season-finale at New England that looms difficult for the Dolphins if the Patriots are of the mind to play all their players and not lay down.

That game could be the difference between 10-6 and a chance to be in the playoffs, and 9-7 and practically no chance to be in the playoffs. Of course, the Dolphins must do work against Buffalo and Detroit first. It is still a long shot and, as I point out in my column today, Miami's quarterback situation is not good right now.

Don't get me wrong. Miami's QB play is fine compared to the reeling Jets. But compared to playoff teams, particularly the New England Patriots? Not so good.

The truth is it seems Chad Henne is regressing. He used to have one good game, one questionable game. Since coming back from his knee injury, he's had one good game (Oakland) and two bad games (Cleveland and New York).

Very frustrating for any Dolphins fan hoping for a franchise QB, hoping for playoff relevance, hoping for a chance to have their team do something special.

Dolphins fans, by the way, were angry Sunday evening after Jets strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi tripped Miami special teams flyer Nolan Carroll along the Jets sideline. It was a dirty move and Alosi eventually released a statement in which he apologized for the "unsportsmanlike" move.

But while Carroll, who eventually got an apology from Alosi, didn't think much of it, several Miami players were indignant. Consider their reaction in this Miami Minute courtesy The Herald's Jeff Darlington:

That's a hugely dysfunctional family dwelling in Cincy.

If we could draft Ingram, get Palmer, then we dont have to scrap Henne just yet. Henne would be Palmer's backup and have a legit qb to compete with for the starting job over the next 4-5 seasons.

If Palmer wins the starting job in cakewalk the next 2-3 seasons or so. Then we definitively know Henne will never be starter material.

At least we'll be able to use Henne as a bridge to our next future franchise qb after the next 5yrs when Palmer's possibly done. In 5yrs Henne would have had 8yrs of starter and backup experience underneath his belt.

Palmer gives the great possibility of a better right now and better future. It allows for Henne to gain more longterm grooming and if still not fully ready to be an upper echelon starter upon Palmer's exit, would be at least a more stable bridge into the qb'ing future.

Right now Kyle Orton would be great too. He is the 4th rated nfl passer. In 498 throws has only 9 picks and 20td's. Thats pretty phenominal for so many pass attempts.

Yes, if there is a way to get Orton I would be all in. LOL..........

Hey from what I see bobby12, Henne is a toss up backup QB himself. Put in Thigpen last 3 games(still not enough time) and see who the better 2nd Stringer is....fair is fair.

Let the fans decide, not the guy who invested a 2nd rounder on a QB he has an umbilical attachment too. If Penny wouldnt have gotten hurt, Henne actually WOULD be ridin the pine anyway.

I also see Orton is only in his 6th season right now. Telling me his numbers are no fluke. Orton is hitting upper echelon qb status right underneath everyone's noses.

He was only in his 4th season when he left the Bears. Wow, did they give up on this kid far too early! LOL..........

I can understand the Henne doubt here. But what I cannot understand at all is replacing him with Thigpen. Thigpen doesnt even look like a good backup for any nfl team.

Josh McDaniels has done GREAT work with Orton. The Broncs would be absolute fools to let him get away!

First of all guys, you are not going to just GET Kyle Orton. Why would Denver give him up? So that they can start Tim Tebow, who nobody knows if he can even play in this league or not. It would have been the equivalent of us getting rid of Pennington and turning things over to Pat White. It was never going to happen. And if you think Denver will trade Orton for a pick or picks, we can forget that idea too....we're not trading any more picks!

DB, I don't see why you are giving Palmer a free pass for Cinci being dysfunctional. As a vet in this league doesn't he have to take some responsibility for his poor play this year? Not sure what his INT numbers are but I know they are high. Some of you guys are crucifying Henne for his picks but giving Palmer a free pass. I don't think you can have it both ways. My feeling is that Palmer is pretty beat up after years of inadequate offensive line play. He's had numerous injuries that I think affect his play today. I'm not convinced he is ever going to be a good QB in this league again. Is he a FA or are you proposing we trade for him? I think if you are going that route it pretty much says to Henne we are done with you and let's move on. Get some competition for Henne next year but he starts the year as the starter under a new OC and with an improved running game.

redsky, now orton is an intriguing option.

Thigpen doesnt seem like he'll ever be more than just a 3rd string backup option. Most teams only carry two qb's on the entire roster. LOL.........

Craig, I'm with you - palmer looks to be done. he was once a great young Qb then he got injured in that Steeler playoff game, got a few more injuries and has never been the same

Most of us have joked about the Jets being "scumbags" or similar-type language but after yesterday it has begun to ring true.

It's amazing to me they didn't fire that moron ON THE SPOT after he ADMITTED to his juvenile and dnagerous behavior.

It's clear that franchise (at least the decison-makers) has adopted Rex Ryan's obnoxious behavior.

To still have this idiot employed and "under review" is absolutely ludicrous.

Guys....you are nuts!!....Denver is NOT giving up on Kyle Orton. Based on what? That they have a first rounder sitting on the bench? They don't even know if Tebow can play yet. I believe Kyle Orton is under for contract for at least one more year. We're no trading any more picks to aquire someone like Orton.

Settle down buddy. lol

Carson Palmer didnt make Cincy a dysfunctional team. They were that from day one when he walked thru the door.

Craig, in a bash Henne laden blog someone has to offer possible solutions. None of have crystal balls and know what this ownership will actually do. So bouncing things off of eachother is our only solutions.

We could all just continue bashing Chad. But that's the blind obvious here already. LOL...........

I think it's hilarious that guys want Thigpen for the rest of the season. What has he done to convince people he can play in this league? Is the starting QB's job not to win games? We did that yesterday. Henne starts next week....end of discussion.....next topic!

Yeah,,,,,gggrrrrreeeaattttttt idea, "let the fans decide" who the starters and backups should be. Do you people take yourselves seriously because you might need psychiatric care.

Why don't you try bashing Carson Palmer instead. For a guy who's been in the league 8 years his numbers are atrocious!!

I think we've got a pretty dysfunctional team too. We've got an OC on the team who everyone knows his time is up and he's cost us at least 2-3 games this year with his playcalling. If we're sitting at 9-4 right now, we're not even having these discussions about Henne.

I laughed at that one too.

Redsky only mentioned Orton's name. lol....

Can we at least throw around names that are upgrades to what we have without being burned at the stakes. lol.....

Assuredly I'ld be burned at the stakes for witchcraft if I dare mention how nice it would be to have a "Tom Brady-like" qb. lol........

Take it easy on us and dont let your blood presure rise so high on this. Ok, buddy? lol....

It's going to be very hard for the Dolphins to acquire a veteran QB who would be a dramatic upgrade, barring something unforeseen.

That's just being realistic. The options are very limited.

They just dont have much in the way of draft picks to offer.

I'm not at all suggesting they don't TRY. They pretty much have to. Only that there really not in great position to get it done that way.

As for the rookie prospects, nobody here really has any clue how any of those guys will do. There isn't an Elway or a Manning coming out. Doesn't mean they shouldn't draft one---only that it's a crapshoot.

I give Henne a pass for that game due to the weather. A win is a win, especially against the Jets. Sparano needs to keep him in the game for every available snap this season. No one except maybe Tom Brady would have had success in those elements. Frankly, if we can't get Luck, Mallett, Newton or possibly Locker I don't see the point of thinking of a QB in 2011. And there's not one free agent out there who would be a significant upgrade at the position.

That being said my concerns about Henne this year have not been changed by his play to this point. And trust me I want on the bandwagon but am not blind either. I have been critical of Henne this year, and will continue to be if warranted by the way, but being critical and yet rooting for someone to succeed are not mutually exclusive. We're a hell of a lot closer to a championship if we already have the right QB than if we have to start over, and I want a championship as soon as possible.

Craig M and DB

What has Henne done to show that HE can play in this league?? What has Thigpen done to NOT deserve to play that Henne HAS done??

You bash with no substance. Bash Henne the same way you bash Thigpen. Henne has waaaay too many downsides. None of us have seen enough of Thigpen bash. One game? really? What about when he came in for Penny and Henne when they both went down? Did he suck then? Or did he lead us to victory? He looked good off the bench.

Henne got benched for a real good reason. How quickly we forget.....

Henne may not be the answer and I'm definitely leaning on the NOT side of the fence but thinking Thigpen, ((a guy who has been in the league longer than Henne, couldn't beat out some pretty mediocre qbs for a starting job, can't see over the offensive lines which is why Herm used to roll him out 80% of the time, and hasn't won the confidence of a coaching staff looking to replace their starter)), deserves a shot when we're still in the playoff hunt is so ridiculously moronic I don't even know what else to say.

I repeat,,,,,the Dolphins coaches would love to bench Henne and go with someone that gives them a better chance to win AND STILL won't give Thigpen the nod!!!! Does that not tell you something? Or do you truly believe you know more about the players abilities than the people who watch them workout, practice, play, eat, sleep, study, s**t, etc.? REALLY?

Im out. This blog is heading for the wolves. Great thing is its probably the only meal the wolf gets all season. "Feed The Wolf."

Positive or not, I still appreciate all of you as fellow fin fans baby! LOL...........

Orton,Palmer? what are you guys smoking? Bunch of naysayers.

These are losing QBs. They dont have the drive to win games.

Palmer is a loser. He can't win, He will never be a winning QB. As of now, Bengals have the #2 pick in the draft, and are already thinking about drafting QBs.

Here comes that stupid trolley again, along with the weird guy in the sweater.

It's bad enough I have to hang out with a talking owl and this supposedly "Good" King Friday who is an incompetent despot.

I hate this life.

"Let the fans decide" was meant in the sense to "let us see what he can do". (especially if we get eliminated soon from contention)

Not my intention to pick the roster....

Your looping me in with the wrong needle buddy. Im not a Henne basher. Im a Henning basher. IMO, first and foremost Dan Henning's offensive system period isnt young qb friendly.

My take is Henne could possibly be another Kyle Orton in the waiting in a better young qb friendly system. Those wanting to draft a qb will be in for quite a shock when finally realizing we not only need to get rid of Henning. But also need to either totally revamp or scrap our entire un-young qb friendly offensive system.

That's my realistic take and official stand buddy. LOL..............

The Bengals are such a dysfunctional mess (starting with their awful owner) that plenty of great players have passed through there and lost far more than they've won. It's pretty much the LAST place anybody wants to play---and for good reason.

I wouldn't totally discount Palmer resurrecting his career elsewhere. I liken it a bit to Archie Manning, who often played at an extremely high level but very rarely for a team that wasn't atrocious.

Not saying that would absolutely be the case with Palmer, only that he's been FAR from the main problem in Cincy. That starts right at the top.

To put it another way with Palmer, I honestly think if you switched him with Roethlisberger---Ben with Cincy and Carson with the Steelers---they're careers would have a similar arc and W/L record.

I hope crowder gets traded to the jets after this season, god that would be the perfect fit for his mouth and his lack of skill.....or maybe the bills can take him, hell lets just give him away for free, no compensation neccessary.

TEAMS make some players.

Much as I love Bob Griese for what he meant to the Dolphins, ask yourself this: Had Griese played for one of the perenially woeful teams from that era like the Eagles or Pats do you think he'd have a bust in Canton today? C'mon.

Alex Smith. He will be CHEAP, has a chance to be really good, and if he isn't he will be an excellent number two quarterback because he is really smart.

dr roberts,

At least the last 3 seasons prior to what amounted to a career endding shoulder injury Greise was easily a top 3 rated nfl qb. He was not surrounded with championship calibre then.

During this period Griese was known by the unmistakeble nickname "the surgeon." In this period when hearing the term "the surgeon" you unmistakebly knew it was a reference to Bob Griese.

Actually had Griese not became a great qb after the championship era he would have never made Canton. During the championship era the rap against Griese was that any dummy could have quarterbacked those teams to a SB title.

It was clearly what Griese did after the championship years, then rubberstamping it with the two championship rings, that made his trip to Canton a foregone conclussion.

Yes! Before Griese's career ending shoulder injury he was definitely an ELITE nfl qb. LOL..........

Belcos, are you dreaming ,alex SMITH is becoming a star in SF .

Atomic bomb make everything glow.

DB--I was also around to see that part of Bob's career, and while I would certainly agree he was generally underrated (even disrespected) to some degree---especially how well he played the mental aspect of the game---I'd still maintain that had he played with one of the true sad sack franchises from that era he would have struggled to win and likely never would have got to Canton, as deserved as it may have been.

Again, Archie Manning's career is kind of the polar opposite in this regard. Nobody from that era, and I mean NOBODY didn't recognize his tremendous ability, but the Saints franchise was just a perennial mess back then and he couldn't lift them himself.

Had Manning played for the Steelers, Raiders, Dolphins, etc. of that era I have zero doubt he'd have his rings and place in the HOF.

dr roberts,

Also, funny thing about that quarterbacking period is that throwing for over 200yds a game was a hallmark achievement. The bar wouldnt be raised until then phenom Charger qb Dan Fouts would emerge to finally raise that passing benchmark forever more.

Fouts would consistently throw for 300yds per game under then offensive guru Sid Gilman. Ironically it would be a Dolphins qb that would come along and erase Fouts records while throwing for 300 plus yards with Exlax regularity too.

Marino nearly made passing for 400yd look like it could become just regular normal child's play.

Yeah...memory may fail me but I think Miami threw a TOTAL of something like 16 passes in the 73 AFC Championship and Super Bowl COMBINED.

Different era, for sure (and one helluva OL and run game!)

I get as frustrated watching Henne as anyone else, but you have to take emotion out of it. The fact is Henne should be given 1 more year under a new OC. Many good QB's dont blossom in their 1st 2 years, i.e. Brees, Aikman, Young, Elway. He's shown enough flashes in his first 20+ something starts to be given a longer leash. I'd hate to see him mature in to a Pro Bowler in another uniform

dr roberts,

I cant entirely agree Griese because, I dont know if you'll remember, but upon his senior season in college he finished 2nd in the Heisman voting to Steve Spurrier.

However, Griese turned out to be an absolutely terrific pick for us.

Alex Smith will be a free agent, and the head coach may get fired.

He could be good competition for Henne, or strong back-up.

Much better NFL QB than Spurrier turned out to be, for sure.

I'm not knocking Griese in the least, only saying I really question if he'd be in the HOF today if not for all the team success (which he was surely a big part of). Had he suited up for the Saints or Eagles (to name two) I doubt he'd be in Canton.

It often works that way, rightly or wrongly. For instance, you look at Namath's career stats and they're VERY underwhelming, probably not HOF worthy at all--but that SB 3 win trumps all that.

I have huge concerns tha bringing in yet another young qb into a young qb unfriendly system will not work. PLus Smith may already have lingering emotional scars about his failures in Frisco. The combination of the two highly scraes me.

I watched Carson Palmer yesterday. Not saying the Bengals are all his fault. However, watching his two pic 6's yesterday, he looked lost, confused like a rookie, and not looking very confident. I think injuries have taken their toll on him. Not so sure he will ever be what he was before.

dr roberts,

Never question what has already been done. Why ruffle the wig over something that has never happened anyway. If you're anything like me there's enough things to worry about that are on the plate. LOL...........

henne better buy all of the defense a very nice christmas gift this year because they bailed his sorry ass out yesterday. the article says the dolphins SHOULD beat buffalo and detroit, don't speak so soon. with henne in there anyone can beat the dolphins, as we have already seen. the dolphins KNOW they must find a qb next season.

All I have to do is look at the won/loss record of the two quarterbacks to decide that Thigpen hasn't earned the right to start and Henne has. I'll take 14-12 over 1-12 any day of the week. Make any excuses you want for Thigpen but a quarterbacks job, like a starting pitchers job in baseball, is to win games. If you win, you play again the next week. If you continue to lose, you'll be benched. It's partly why the bashing of Jay Fiedler was never warranted. He wasn't the most talented quarterback on the planet but he had a good won/loss record while starting for Miami. Same with Big Ben. He doesn't dominate the stats every week but he puts his team in a position to win games. Let's remember this is not fantasy football but rather REAL football and winning is really all that matters. We did that yesterday.....NEXT!

Same feeling here regarding Smith. He's shown brief flashes but not a whole lot of 'em, frankly. I don't know that he's really all that different from Henne in that regard---certainly not enough to say he'd be a dramatic upgrade with any kind of confidence based on his resume so far.

With Palmer, I tend to agree with the "damaged goods" assessment but wouldn't totally discount him reviving his career elsewhere. Cincy is just such an abortion of a franchise.

I'd be fine with Alex Smith and playing backup to Chad Henne. I don't rate him as a star or anything more than average but he's a lot better than some of the options out there, like David Carrr his backup at one point this season, for example.

yeah big ben has two superbowls, and a chance for a third. henne? 0. and no playoffs. not even in the same category as ben.

Gotta check out, fellas. Nice shooting the breeze with you.

(and dear Jets: bite me)

Alex Smith had that same look in his eyes as Beck when he first came into the league, and that look(panic) stayed for quite a while. I think he has overcome that, and he is becoming a steady qb.

If we stick with Henne and he fails, Smith may be a good enough qb to get us wins, especially with our defense. Still gotta get a rookie somewhere in the draft.

crowder says if that guy tried to trip him he would have broke his leg. dansby says that was dirty, what i want to know is i thought you were supposed to stick up for your teammates, why didn't anyone go over there and knock that piece of sh%T's teeth down his throat?

My feeling is even if Henning retires we keep the same system in place, maybe even promoting within. As long as the same system's in place it wont be very young qb friendly. The best solution if keeping the same system is bringing in a vet like Palmer and continue to groom Henne.

If we get a new OC with an entirely different system, unless its an entirely young qb friendly system we may as well completely cut ties with Henne. Starting all over learning another young qb unfriendly system wont be the answer either. At least he's already learning this one.

henne has already failed. i didn't see a great game from him yesterday. 5 for 17 for 55 yards. that's downright pathetic. oh yeah it's the playcalling again. COME ON!
