The day-after QB frustration and tripping indignation

The Dolphins remain a hopeful bunch this morning.

Coach Tony Sparano will hold his day-after press conference in a couple of hours and, at some point, likely point out that the Dolphins remain in the playoff chase with a handful of other 7-6 teams and so, "Why not us?"

The Dolphins should win the next two games. They host the Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions. Those teams have combined for six wins. But it is that season-finale at New England that looms difficult for the Dolphins if the Patriots are of the mind to play all their players and not lay down.

That game could be the difference between 10-6 and a chance to be in the playoffs, and 9-7 and practically no chance to be in the playoffs. Of course, the Dolphins must do work against Buffalo and Detroit first. It is still a long shot and, as I point out in my column today, Miami's quarterback situation is not good right now.

Don't get me wrong. Miami's QB play is fine compared to the reeling Jets. But compared to playoff teams, particularly the New England Patriots? Not so good.

The truth is it seems Chad Henne is regressing. He used to have one good game, one questionable game. Since coming back from his knee injury, he's had one good game (Oakland) and two bad games (Cleveland and New York).

Very frustrating for any Dolphins fan hoping for a franchise QB, hoping for playoff relevance, hoping for a chance to have their team do something special.

Dolphins fans, by the way, were angry Sunday evening after Jets strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi tripped Miami special teams flyer Nolan Carroll along the Jets sideline. It was a dirty move and Alosi eventually released a statement in which he apologized for the "unsportsmanlike" move.

But while Carroll, who eventually got an apology from Alosi, didn't think much of it, several Miami players were indignant. Consider their reaction in this Miami Minute courtesy The Herald's Jeff Darlington:

Odin, I see ur upset with the Alosi decision. Considering all the factors I'm actually OK with the decision. After watching his press conference and his mannerisms, I really believe he was sincere. But I don't believe this was a Jets decision, Pretty sure NFL put the pressure on.

Henne does exactly what he was told to do. he protects the ball at all costs, throws it way out of bounds if nothing is there and rarely gets to throw it long per the coaching. So the defense crowds the line knowing he isn't going long and then we can't run either. We leave 8 guys in the backfield to protect since our line sucks and that only leaves three targets. Most of them can't catch. That's the problem. It's not Henne "regressing", it is the pathetic game plan calling for maximum protection with only three possible targets, running the ball as little as 7 times in a game, and playcalling. Henne has better statistics all last year than Sanchez and now this year also. How is Sanchez the guy everyone is raving about to take them to the Super Bowl and somehow our better qb sucks?

Whats Wrong With This Picture:

Michael Vick gets a year in prison followed by a one year nfl suspension. His real crime:

Teaching kids it's ok to cheat.

Alosi gets 4 games and $25,000 fine. His real crime:

Also teaching kids its ok to cheat while jeapardizing another's livlihood for the rest of thier life.

OK, you'll argue Vick killed dogs. But these dogs were only bred for one thing. To kill or be killed. Would you have rathered they give the dogs away as family pets and some unwary kid gets mauled to death?

As I said, I dont condone it, but these dogs were bred to kill or be killed. It's unlawful and worst case scenario teaches its ok to cheat. Add To Alosi teaching its also ok to permanently jeapardize another's livlihood.

Tell me this doesnt at least warrant a firing. What a double standard society we have become.

Finfan23 -- YOU ARE RIGHT ON.

Plus if you add in Vick's one year suspension and would have made at least $5million. Folks that's at least a $5million dollar fine to boot.

The roof of the Metrodome collapses and Brett Favre's starting streak comes to an end.
Freaky man just freaky.

Dying, the difference in my mind is Vick did it over and over for an extended period of time plus he tortured those dogs when he was finished with them. Alosi, terrible, disgusting thing he did but emotional moment and he screwed up. If he in fact really injured Nolan, no doubt he should have been fired. The guy has to pay a hefty fine and is suspended without pay. He is not a player and pretty sure he isn't making a large pay. Nolan Carroll was pretty graceful here too. Sorry, but IMO a multiple offender who breaks the law over and over knowing it's wrong vs. a guy who made one really dumb mistake. I don't believe there is a comparison.

The New York Jets NFL football organization in its entirety should be criminalized.

Bobbyd12,

Have an emotional moment and cuss your boss out and see what happens. Whatever good years you have no longer matter does it?

Bobbyd12, for all we know is the team pays his fine and still pays him his salary underneath the table. Then jokingly nickname him "the dolphin killer" as he now has increased popularity inside the organization.

Fire his ass and lackball his employment throughout the entire NFL. This is the right thing to do.

Bobbyd12,

Also Vick cannot be labeled a multiple offender unless he returns to dogfighting again. Would we have looked at Vick differently had he been white?

As much as I hate to say it I know some of us would.

Dying Breed- My niece was mauled by a Pitt Bull recently. Luckily she is ok, and the dog was rightfully put down. But I think you are a little overboard with this one. This was one moment of stupidity as compared to a pattern of brutality. You can't even compare the two. This coach Alosi is not a teacher of children, I doubt that there is going to be a rash of sideline trippings on the pop warner fields across the country anytime soon. Disposing a living being for your own amusement is demented, and sick. What sort of message does THIS send to children(if you want to get all it's about the children B.S.) Let this one go. I respect your passion, and your point of view. But your wrong comparing what happened yesterday, to what Mike Vick did.

Stephen Ross himself should be banging the mallett for Alosi's firing!

Darryly Dunphy,

Also respect your point of view. Most of us think only in the way society has imbredded us to think. But I've always been a free thinker and could care less for status quo.

I do not condone dog breeding for fight purposes. However once this has been done they are only good for killing or to be killed. They are not household pet material and pretty useless to keep around otherwise.

My primary reason for the two comparison is, BOTTOMLINE, in the end they both send a very harmful and terribly destructive message. Both should have been dealt with extremely harshly.

Vick's was! You mean to tell me this clown couldnt have at least been fired. Regular people get fired everyday and thier transgressions arent even exposed at the national level.

Actually I dont give a s hit what color, creed, or nationally the guys was his ass should be fired.

You can be citizen of the year and in one hot and emotional moment lash out and take another's life. Does this also mean you should get probation instead of life in prison like everyone else?

Find me a jugde or prosecutor in America that will go along with you on that one. LOL.............

Looks like the Dolphins are 5 point favorites this Sunday.

Maybe we should simulate away game conditions.
Bring in a bunch of 5 foot 285 pound bucked tooth hairy legged women to make it seem like we are in Buffalo.

Good evening gentlemen... I have absolutely no sympathy or concern for the feelings of Alosi. What he did is really really dumb, and could have injured a player really bad. Even ending his career should he hit just right.

He has been suspended for the remainder of the season. And, by league rules, is not allowed to be paid during that time. I know some of you feel that he will be paid, it will just be done on the Down Low... Unless the Jests organization is running a separate set of books (I doubt it in this day and age of Computed revenue breakdown and all the laws that go along with an organization like the Jests... It will not happen, there is no way the Jests owner or management is going to risk the sort of league sanctions and Tax nightmares for some idiot who did something he should have known better then to do.

Even the Pests are not sideways to risk that.

As far as we go, I don't know about the rest of you guys... But DAMN!.... I have done some crazy, stupid, illigal, immoral self serving shiznit in my days.... I have hurt some very nice people with my selfish shiznit and I have cracked a few heads of those who I felt desparatly needed it at the time... then later felt like some sort of animal for doing so.

You don't HAVE to like what he did, and you don't HAVE to like him... But do your concence and your Karma a GIANT Break.... and let it go. Its already cost him dearly, he is gone for the year and there is NO garantee he will be back. HE has to live with the embarresment of being "That Guy" who did that dumb Shiznit on National TV... He is the one who cheated, HE will have to wear it like a brand until the day finally comes that more people have forgotten then remember the matter...

If you have lived like I have... You already know what I am saying... If not... Try not to place yourself in the situations Myself and others have that taught us we are ALL capable of some pretty bad doings...

Besides.... WE still need a QB and Henning still Must go! Priorities Guys... Priorities!

I'm hearing the Dolphins picked up Kevin Curtis tonight. I would say that with Hartline gone for the season that's a pretty decent pickup. This team is going to kick themselves this season for dropping those two very winnable games to Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

Dying Breed- I may have misunderstood your original post. The Pitt Bull thing hits home hard. I'm all for anyone that has the opinion that this guy should be fired. It would be the right thing to do. But in the NFL, you have guys that have commited manslaughter playing on Monday Night Football. The rules are different for coaches, players in this league if they can help you win.

On Henne..These next three games could be the most important of his career. He has to overcome Hennings madness and prove that he can bounce back from the last two poor performances. This is important for his confidence, and it is important to the orginization to show that they can trust him with this team. If Henne plays out the stretch like he has the last two weeks it will certainly raise the red flag about his future here. It may force the hand of the franchise to lose it's sense and go after another "it boy quarterback" Hopefully Henne plays better, and he can put some of these scenarios to rest. He can go into the offseason knowing the job is his to lose. These 3 games may completley change the whole face of the franchise. The pressure is on.

Plain and simple, if Alosi has problems with self control at critical moments, he shouldn't be allowed to be put in situations where this lack of self control will be tested.

You don't want to fire him, FINE(bullshyt-lol).

Suspension and fine, FINE!

REGARDLESS, if your organization is so sleazy that you don't mind employing scumbags, the guy should still be banned for life from NFL sidelines. If as a strength and conditioning coach he can fulfil his duties without being on the sidelines, FINE!

If not, give him a pink slip and send him on his way.

Alosi is your average everyday sleazebag and if he hasn't learned anything about sportsmanship by now, he ain't ever going to learn.

craig

see Clovus'comment at 8:17pm.....NEXT!

Don't understand this NEED and desire for fans and the media to want to replace quarterbacks all the time. TJACK get a start for Minnesota tonight and the media jumps all over him that he's not a starting quarterback in this league and never will be. Huh???? Didn't he just win a game for Minnesota last week with pretty impressive outing? Fans and media are ready to run Donovan McNabb out of town in Washington. A lot of you guys want Henne gone from this team. Everyone says Alex Smith isn't the answer in SF and everyone wants Palmer gone from Cinci. I don't get this desire to have a constantly revolving door at QB all the time. It's not how you build teams or win championships. There are only a select few Mannings and Bradys in this world and they're awful hard to find.

tdeck,

I didn't agree with ANY of what Clovus had to say, other than Henning has to go.

Is there any reason why, after this idiot serves his suspension the rest of this season, that the owners of other NFL clubs, most notably Ross, can't ban him from the stadium for future games? Obviously you can't frivolously ban someone (imagine if you could keep Belichick at the gate) but this guy assaulted one of your players - one of your paid commodities. I feel it would send a helluva message for Ross and potentially other owners to make it clear to Commish Goodell that they don't want this a-hole on their private property.

Darryl:

"Disposing a living being for your own amusement is demented, and sick."

I used to hunt, but don't anymore because I don't get a kick out of killing animals. I guess all hunters, according to you, are demented and sick. many game species are shot and made into mounts, not eaten at all. If Vick had been a hillbilly living in the sticks, he MIGHT have received probation at worst. Many people in our society value animal life more than human life.

Texans need a turnover!

Johan, good point. Ban the A-hole. What I can't understand is why everyone is indignat and shocked.
I was reading the NY rags and some Jets players were saying that this is common amongst the NFL teams (popping opposing team's players when they are out of bounds on their side of the field). Can you believe that some guys making obscene amounts of money to play sports would cheat? What possible incentive would they have? Cheating where big money is involved? Imagine!

Stillhardcore- I could have phrased that better. I am a card carrying member of the NRA, and I too hunt. For food not trophy. I find trophy hunting a waste of the animal. this is my position. I do apologize if I offended any hunters as they are usually the most responsible conservationists I know. But to kill animals for the fun of just killing is wrong in my eyes.

What a game...Go Texans

Odin, great game tonight. Texans tied it, let's hope they beat the Ravens in OT!

Damn, Ravens won toss!

There is no living black or white, we all live in the "grey" area..we all have done good and bad in each of our lives...that's just how it is. Now I would have rather seen Chowder go over and kick that guy in the knee so he could feel some pain...

I hate the Ravens!

Yeah R

Me too R

AFter Checking Its Pretty We're Out Of the Playoffs.

Even if Jets lose final 3 games.

Chargers are next in line for a wildcard berth even though we all have the exact same record. They'll beat us in a tiebreaker.

Chargers last 3 games are 49ers(5-8), @Bengals(2-11), @Broncos(3-10)

So you see, there isnt very much chances of them losing any of thier final 3 games. Basically winning our final 3 games serve no greater purpose than possibly giving Ireland and Sparano at least 1 more year. Difficult to fire a guy after a 10-6 season.

Actually if both Ravens and Jets lose final 3 games we can get in. But problem is this is the Ravens final 3 game schedule:

Saints(10-30, Browns(5-8), and the Bengals(2-11)

So you tell me how likely it is both the Ravens and Jets lose thier final 3 games?

Jets have Steelers(10-3), Bears(9-4), Bills(3-10). If the Jets fall Chargers are next in line to get in and have the weakest final 3 game schedule.

Previous post should have said "Its Pretty Official We're Out Of The Playoffs".

Just noticed I left out "official".

Rexy's stooge should have been banned for life. The guy involved himself in an actual play, he could have had an impact on the outcome. It's exactly why baseball banished Pete Rose (and rightfully so): not because he gambled but because his actions could have influenced the outcome of games he was involved in. The Jets players and coaches will simply take up a collection for the guy and he'll end up making money on the deal and be treated as a folk hero within the organization. It will become a joke, another sidebar in the Miami-NY feud and that's unfortunate because it's a serious transgression if you ask me.

What's going to happen when some other sideline employee decides to interject themselves into the action and "take one for the team"? What happens if a guy really does get seriously hurt? What if it happens during a huge game and it influences the outcome? What happens if it later emerges that the interloper had bet a large sum of money on the game? The mere possibility that this could happen, regardless of how remote it seems, means there must be an a zero-tolerance policy about this conduct in all circumstances. Penalize the team a first-round pick or, even better, take away a home game next season.

If I didn't know about this incident and you told me about it without mentioning the teams, I'd immediately know what team's employee did the tripping. Only one NFL team could be that slovenly and classless. It'd be the one run by the buffoonish slob whose father never won anything on his own either.

Even though the executioner is coming for us. It is important that we finish strong. especially for Henne. The whole franchise is going to go into freak out mode if Henne continues to play as he has the last 2 weeks. This pressure is on him now. It may not be right, or fair because there are some huge gaping holes in our offense. But this is the nature of the beast at the Qb. position. You get more praise then deserved, and you take all the blame when things go south.

Man, that one stupid call by the refs against the Steelers and the Cleveland debacle and this team is 9-4!!! Wow, that is pretty incredible. It's torture to think about it but they really are 2 stupid plays away from being in the wild-card lead!!! crazy league!

this team is NOT playoff ready, to sneak in would be another letdown for this franchise and the fans, its a false prophet if we get in, OUR offense is absolutely Horrible to watch, the defense cannot carry this team to a playoff victory let alone a SB appearence. Anybody who thinks this team is a legitiment threat to beat a QUALITY team in the playoffs is just hoping out for the best of optimism that our offense can spark it up in the last three games and beyond(Which is EXTTREMELY unlikely).....Now that truly is dumbfounded thinking, we need a capable offense along with a capable OC before we can really become legit!!!!

Please please....Henne cannot catch up to the SPEED of the game. The speed effects his ability to look at all of the WR's and find who is open. I watched some of his games at MI and he was able to keep up "somewhat" to the speed in college..there is no way he has that necessary tool to be a great QB in today's NFL. Watch some of our games from different camera angles online..it is amazing on how many open WR of our Henne misses in games, it's sickening! It's hard to see from the standard TV camera angle...look online and you guys be the judges...Henne just doesn't have it...

The only way henne can excell is if the team goes out and buys and drafts STAR caliber talent*lol* in the offseason cuz that way henne doesnt need to be the MAN or the IT factor in miami, Otherwise what you see in henne is what you get, give him 2 more years and i can probably bet there wont be much of a difference in the style and way he plays QB....we need some more competition at the very least in the offseason to light a fire under henne's @SS cuz the couaches seem unable to do that with most of their offensive players this year.

I agree

But that would have to be a perfect OL to give Henne 14 seconds when he drops back in the pocket so he can progress through 4 targets...

If henne doesn't dominate against the bills and lions I'm done with this f u c k biscuit

Cam EarthWake has now reached Homes mark of 14 NFL sacks as posted prior to start of the season

Really great to see Cam leading the NFL in sacks and still has 3 games left

Also if looking for weapons of mass destruction
Simply check out Alaska USA and the most unobtrusive weather weapon of mass destruction responsible for much of the severe weather disasters around the world

Educate yourself b4 it is too late on RF & Elf waves directed at any given target through the use of HAARP

Congrats to hard working Cam Wake
Great story on Wake & Bess coming from NOTHING & being the best thru Hard Work & Sheer Determination

I love Channing Crowder. Go Gators.

Henne is injured, dudes. Give him a break.

Let's see Coach Nolan has made a good looking unit out of the Defense in one season. I don't think another OC will make any difference in Henne's development. When pass plays are called and players are open Henne continues to check down and still throw the ball out of bounds. He is killing us on third down; third and 2, third and 3, mind you. He can't make a play for 3 stinking yards. That's not play calling. That's lack of play making. I'm not worried at all about the QB situation, I'm certain, Henne is a goner.

Henne hatred - having lived in the san diego area during Brees'first few years......most fans said the same thing about him. Funny cuz now he's one of the best.

The irony many of the anti-Henne posts is that guys like Carson Palmer and Kyle Orton are being mentioned as replacements for Chad.

Palmer sucks. Period.

Kyle Orton? As DyingBreed mentioned earlier, he was dumped by Chicago in his fourth year. DB goes on to state the Chicago gave up on him too soon- while stating that we should dump Henne? Really? Chicago gave up too soon- 4 years, but the Fins should give up on Chad after 2 or 3? Come on, gentleman.

DB, ALoco, Home, countless others- i'd like to introduce you to my friend, Rational Thinking. Rational Thinking, meet the Fins blog.

I watched the game on DVR again last night to watch Henne's performance. I wanted to get a good look at what was going on with his game yesterday. Here's what I came up on his incompletions. I went through all of them & came away OK with his performance. Here the ones I remember off the top of my head now:

1. Dropped pass by Marshall. Not perfect, but CLEARLY catchable. he also dropped a Ronnie throw as well.

2.Dropped pass by Bess(for a 1st). Led him perfect.

3. Screen to Ricky totally blown up by pressure. Throw into ground, originally ruled grounding, then taken away.

4. Screen pass to Ronnie in the late 3rd or early 4th...Hurried so he threw it away before Ronnie turned around. Play might have gone for big yards but the protection wasn't there. Not sure if it was Murtha or Mcquistan who whiffed.

5. Throw away to Marshall up the sideline. Bad pass but Taylor was in his face & planted him in the ground.

6. Taylor's dropped int. Actually, this was a great play by JT. Polite didn't engage Taylor long enough. Taylor fought his way off, dropped back a bit & made a great play. This was less about Chad's bad throw & more about a good defensive play.

7. Throw away in the end zone. Bess had Revis outside of him & a LB shadowing him inside. That same LB shadowed Marshall as well, along with another LB'er & Cromartie. Both in the same area of the field. Good throw away, only throw he could make.

8. The throw over Bess's head on the sideline. It may have looked like he chickened out or no one knew what he was thinking(Dan Fouts), but Pace was right underneath & could have undercut that ball and gone for 6. Fouts said as much. Henne might have made that throw but the motto in Miami is throw it away & don't risk making a mistake.

9. Threw late to Marlon Moore which allowed Revis to break up the pass. 1st read wasn't there, late getting to his 2nd read.

10. Throw into 3x coverage to Bess late in the game. 2 man Route, Marshall was doubled. Bess had a LB, safety & a DB on him. No where to go with the ball, HIGH risk throw.

11. Deep throw to Marshall into 2x coverage. Couldn't really see if anyone else was open but he took a shot.

Along with his 5 completetion, thats 16 of the 18 pass attempts. I can't remember the other 2. But, he actually played well considering all the max protects & 2 or 3 man routes. Everyone was blanketed all day. This offense is in a world of hurt.

Take from this what you want. Haters & doubters will continue to be but that was an objective analysis.

Give Henne another year but for goodness sake get him a good OC. A young QB is never going to learn when you only let him throw 18 times in a game. Soprano and Henning are so paranoid that Henne will throw an interception, they are just placing hamstrings on him. So what if he throws 3 or 4 or even 5 interceptions, that's how they LEARN. Let him rip it open for 45 passes. Lord knows the ground gain isn't working. I'm still convinced that Soprano should never have talked about this team being in playoff contention. Now they are covering their behinds and blaming everyone else.

Lets see what thigpen can do the remainder of the season cuz it cant be worst then henne.

Um, yeah, it could be worse. Remember the Bears game? Shutout.

Mando,
I like this post and it makes sense.
But keep in mind that the week 17 at the Patriots may actually be winnable. If the Patriots clinch the bye and home field advantage by then, they may be sitting their starters. Sure, they have a long streak of games won at home, but they care about a deep playoff run more.
Of course, the Dolphins may be out of playoff hopes by that point, even if they win the next 2 games.
But that's just something to think about.
P.S. Despite missing a game, Cam Wake leads the entire NFL in sacks with 14!

Change the OC before you change the QB
