Fins expect looong sellout streak will continue

The last time the Dolphins did not sell out a regular-season home game in time to lift the local TV blackout?

You have to have a looong memory ... or a media guide.

It was October 18, 1998 when the St. Louis Rams came to town and were dispatched 14-0 by the Dolphins.

The Dolphins have sold out 99 consecutive home games on time over 12 seasons since that long-ago game against St. Louis. And, after much hand-wringing and persuading and negotiating even, the team is now hopeful that streak will reach 100 consecutive sellouts that lift the local blackout when the deadline arrives at 1 p.m. Thursday.

The Dolphins believe Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills will be sold out in time to lift the local TV blackout.

If it happens, as expected, it will have come with much work. The team will almost certainly get a guarantee from local station CBS-4. That guarantee will mean the station buys whatever number of unsold seats remain so that the game can be shown locally.

It is a win-win for everyone. The station has on its air what will certainly be the highest-rated show of the week in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale market. The Dolphins get their sellout. And local fans that cannot afford or cannot get out to the game for some other reasons, have an opportunity to watch the game.

Good news for everyone.

God, I love when a plan comes together.

[ALERT: Thursday will be a very busy day. On this blog, you'll get an update from the coordinators, you'll get whatever information comes out of the locker room and you'll get the best of Coach Tony Sparano's presser. On my radio show Armando and the Amigo, we'll have Dolphins defensive end Kendall Langford, Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network, Kansas State basketball coach Frank Martin, ESPN's Mike Wallace for Miami Heat talk, and a special surprise guest. I'll be gassed by the end of the day.]

Watching the games on TV the stadium always seems empty. Living in CT I wish I had more opportunities to go. Let's fan-up locals, they will need you!

THE PIZZA GUY WAS SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY .....THE FIRST TIME HW WAS SUSPENDED UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR .NOW SOUND LIKE FIRING.

DID JASON TAYLOR LEAKED THAT INF ABOUT PLANNING TO TRIPP TO ZACK TOAMHS ? NOW ZACK LOOKS SMART .

Not sure if Sparano can keep his job with an 8-8 record because it means we'll have to lose to either the lowly Bills or Lions, and I don't think Ross has the stomach for another wave of boo's and empty seats at home games.

TDecker77,

One of the reasons it looks empty is because numb nuts (Mr. Ross) has made the inside amenities so damn nice. The new addition has bars, restaurants and TV Everywhere. When it is hot, go sit in a nice chair or Bar stool and watch the game in the AC. I am not saying it is good, fans should know that staying in the stadium bowl helps their team... But this is Florida... and people love to chill out and take her easy here.
Watch after half time.... the stadium is nearly empty, No one leaves (Unless its the Chicago game).. they go hangout and eat and drink and chill.... I find the whole thing dumb, if I wanted to sit in a bar and watch the game I'll be damned if I would drive 55 miles South of me and then have to drive home after. I would go to a local Dolphins sports bar (there are Hundreds) and watch it there....

Chew on this: if we hadn't been robbed by the refs in the Pitt game we'd be 8-5 and looking to clinch this weekend.

dolphins games are too expensive. and they arent that good. its not that people are lazy. if the fins were good, every game would be full

what's the cheapest tickets? $70? plus 20 for parking. Who has that money to go watch the fins lose?

I think all the no-shows are because there's so many obese people in Miami/South Florida. I'm serious.

I know the 'party line' is that South Florida is full of slim, attractive, and fit people but Forbes Magazine actually ranked Miami as the FATTEST city in America just last year.

I think even among the fanbase a lot of these obese people buy tickets but rarely go because they're just too lazy and can't be bothered.

By the way, if I remember correctly Seattle had the slimmest population.

STEPHEN, BARROW the money and go to the game, support your team .

Rx(To ton)Ryan ordered th code red.......

The reason the place looks empty is because it is empty! The team is barely mediocre, and with money tight for everyone, who is going to waste money on a ticket for a barely entertaining football game by a bad football team? Have loved the 'phins for 30+ years, but the truth is the truth.

yeah, ok ALoco. No one is a bigger fins fan than me. But I refuse to support a garbage product. And i refuse to pay higher prices to watch a garbage product. If you loan me the money for a ticket and parking, i will drive the 3 hrs south from orlando to watch the game.

A poster from PFT:

This guy is talking out of his ___. First he says that there’s a team upstate (just say the Pats, your not being clever), that lines up their defense. He then goes on to say that they line up their whole defense and that if you watch it you’ll see it.

Ok, then he says he hasn’t looked at anybody’s sidelines for years… but he knows apparently that the Patriots and “A number of teams do it”.

And finally this leads to “I didn’t even know we were doing it”.

Wait, so you knew that the Patriots do it all the time, but you don’t see 8 guys standing in a line on your own sideline?? Westhoff is an idiot, and instead of just owning up and saying yes we do it, he decides to go the other road and put all the attention on other teams and SPECIFICALLY, the Patriots. What a joke.

-Westhuff was trying to exonerate himself on ESPN talk radio. In so doing, he implicates himself totally, Doh. I betcha his Mommy wasn't proud of his wonderlic score! This guy fits right in with the wets, classless, clueless and brainless-ROTFLMAO!

My cousin Ammonia Jones will be playin for the Dolphins next year. He good.

Rex(Two Ton)Ryan ordered the Code red....

todd neal hit the nail on the head. the fins are a garbage football team. highschool football is more entertaining. I grew up with marino and the marks brothers, and as frustratig as fiedler's teams were, at least we had a dominant D and were in almost every game. God, feidler sounds pretty good at this point. this team is a joke. they are panicky and sparano sucks

all i want for xmas is some good football players, and a progressive coach who is willing to use smarts and cunning to beat another team. not the same plays over and over so that the other team can call out what we're doing before we do it. Take a page from pop warner and how he used the carlisle indians

I had season tickets for nearly 25 years before moving away (now in Philly).

If I still lived there, I'd still have them regardless of any frustration with the team or annoyance with Ross's obsession with B-list celebrities. Hell, I still get to 2 or 3 games a year anyway.

Going to the games was (and is) as much a social event as anything else. You see the same people year after year---get to know them---and enjoy their company. Am I passionate about the game? You bet. Been a Dolphins fan since I was 8-years-old. But I also understand it really isn't life and death and ultimately means nothing.

Hey, if somebody only wants to attend when the team is going gangbusters that's their right and it's fine. There's nothing "noble" about that, however. It's pretty much the definition of 'fair-weather fan' actually, even if I don;t have a problem with someone being that.

Todd Neal... there are some empty seats, but you are wrong, the place is no where NEAR empty, I have attended all but a handful of games over the 20 years and have NEVER seen the attendance below 60,000. Usually for the Marque games the attendance is around 68k to 71k... for lesser games it is between 60k to 68k. Considering it can hold 75,192, that is not bad for a State with NCAA sports and other Pro franchises in the State, 3 NFL, 2 NBA, 2 NHL, 2 MLB and god only knows how many NCAA teams.
They announce attendance right after the Half at every game.... so I know the numbers, the number the announce is what is THERE... not what is sold.

My cousin Ammonia Jones will be playin for the Dolphins next year. He good.

My Cousin Bobby Bleach too will be with the fins next year, Those two will certainly be Toxic to opposing teams I'am sure.....

my sister WINDEX WILL BE playing for the dolphins next year .

Derek,
Sorry but I have to respectfully dissagree with you. I have watched every game for as long as the Sunday ticket has been around and have even came and attended a few. All the pan shots of the stadium during home games show plenty of empty seats. And not just right after halftime before everyone gets back to their seat. Also, when they anounce attendance you will note that they call it "paid" attendance. Which means tickets sold, not butts in the seats.

Does anyone know the rule?

Are strength and conditioning coaches allowed in the box?

How about the Vikings/Bears playing at the Univrsity of Minn. next Monday Night.... BURRRRR, But I bet thy'll be a packed house there.......Just saying..

ODIN,

THE BOOK RULE IS THIS.... THE COACHES ALLOWED AND DRESSED PLAYERS ...WHAT WE HAVE HERE ARE NOT DRESSED PLAERS W/ONE ASS COACH FORMING A WALL ......THE PLAYERS SHOULD BE DRESSED UP FOR THE GAME TO BE STANDING IN THERE .THAT CLARLY NOT THE CASE AND THE JET SUSPENDED THE PIZZA INDEFINITLY TODAY WHICH MEANS IS FIRED .

I think it's awesome the Vikes will be playing outdoors again (even if just for a game)

Watching late-season televised games from there as a kid (and they were on a LOT as a perennial contender) were always memorable visually.

I despise domes. Anywhere.

Oden, Apperently in New York they are(And also in New England too according to what's his name)

Suspended indefinitely? After admitting it was organized? What's the delay in just firing the guy??? In the real world people get fired for far less. How do you keep him on the team next year? He must be getting on his knees for Rex.

That a-hole should have been fired on the spot once they had the video evidence and he admitted it. In other words, immediately after the game.

The Jets organization is taking on the same classless stench as Ryan himself.

Derek

thanks for answering a question ive had for quite awile! After halftime kickoff it looks like everyone went home. Never could figure it out. I thought maybe the line for the can was a mile long and nobody could get back in time :)

0x80, Got a feling the NFL wont allow the Jets to 86 this guy,I think they want to dig into this thing to find out how high this goes up to.....

Todd...

TV does not show you what and who is inside the air conditioned portions of the stadium. I'm a season ticket holder and attend every game... What you see on.. TV, is very limited. There is a potion of the stadium they added a few years ago full of bars, couches, tables and chairs, TV's and all manner of food and fun... the place is JAM Packed every game.... trust your... TV... Or trust a season ticket holder... I have nothing to gain or lose by telling you what I know to be true.... Keep watching that.... TV... Todd... I'm in section 245 (Home side Club Level) row 8 seats 1,2,3 and 4... stop by and say hi.

Gotta think that Westoff knew about this, cant imagine a strength coach came up with this by himself, and another thing, why is the strength coach out on the field in the 1st place????

The fact the sellout streak is hitting 100 means little. There are frequently times that the stadium looks half-empty, as it did in Jacksonville on Sunday. So riddle me this local Dolphin fans, who is buying the tickets and then not showing up? The media? Local coporations? Rich fans? Why are people not showing up and why are they not showing up with more energy and spunk? I f corporations and media are buying these tickets just to make certain the games are on TV, then they need to start donating the tickets to charities or fans that can't afford to come out to the games, so that the stadium can start rocking again and the team can benefit.

Cuban the nfl can continue investigating whether he is on the team or not. Its strange to me with all this commotion and distraction they are dancing around with merely a suspension.

Derek,

I believe what you are saying but how come the place never sounds like it does in Pittsburgh or Denver or even New Orleans. Why doesn't it come across as the fans are going nuts and supporting their team? It just doesn't. The three prime time games this season were a big disapointment.

GUESS WHO'S GOING TO START FOR VIKINGS NEXT SUNDAY AT QB ?

PATRICK RAMSY WHO WAS RELEASED 2 WEEKS AGO BY FINS .

GRUDEN IS GOING TO THE CANES, ANOUNCMENT BY NOON TOMORROW.

CUBAN,YOU MAKE ME LOL

0x80, I wonder if two ton rex ordered "The Wall".........

Why the silence from the peanut gallery?

Where are all the mentally challenged wets fans? Oops, my bad, even the mentally challenged are smarter than wets fans.

Speaking of which, I haven't heard from any of the dumb a s s e s in over two weeks now. Go figure?

What else are you gonna do on a nice december south florida day? Too bad I live in colorado or I'd for sure be at the game. The team needs you phin fans.
But I guess after losing 5 at home it'll be tough to get the motivation. That's understandable

WHAT IF RAMSY WINS ON SUNDAY AND BECOMES GREAT QB ?

Aloco,

Ramsey is a Viking????

I thought he was a Bear????

Who cares...............And by the way aloco, ramsey has been in the league for like 15 yars....

DOES ANY ONE IN HERE HAS A MISTRESS ?

it's $25.00 to park and the stadium needs a major renovation. maybe if they had a franchise qb, and a nice stadium more fans would want to go to the games. yeah between $70.00 and $90.00 for nose bleeds.

"Suspension Increased" segment coming up on sports center.

BTW, Steve Young is a DOOF!!!!

dolphin77, how the rest rooms in the stadium ?

Wow, some segment.

The NFL under Roger Goodell is the new WWF!

He's turning this league into a joke!

Aloco-ROTFLMAO @ 6:35

Craig...

In that aspect you are absolutely correct, there are times the Miami crowed goes totally flat. I cannot give a reason, but it certainly happens. It has since they moved from the OB out to this stadium. Part of that issue is Miami's field sits back 40 feet on the home side and almost 75 feet on the visitor side (This was the way they could place a Baseball team in the stadium when they built it.
The field mics that are on the sidelines are really far away from the people, unlike domes and some of the newer stadiums where the seats are literally so close you can reach out and touch a guy who runs out of Bounds.... it is also very open and expansive, the noise dissipates very easy.
Lastly... once again... a bunch of the damn fans go hang inside and it really sucks, they also gave all the season ticket holders this new gadget that is like an I-phone that you can watch replays and other game going on...BIG MISTAKE... all the tech junkies sit and stare at that damn little screen and fail to do their job as a fan.

alosi is a big piece of fu$k pie! crowder sure talks a lot. it still blows my mind that not 1 player went over there and rearranged that bastards face!

Dolphin77 put the kid down and step out of the mens room

"If there is a 1 percent chance then there is a 100 percent chance!"

GO FINS!!!!

rest rooms are nice. the last time i went they ran out of beer and pepsi. the people they have working concessions are not the sharpest tools in the shed either.

WHEN M.VICK WAS SENT TO PRISON ,HE ALSO WAS BANNED FROM OWNING A DOG .

NOW HE SAID ... (( I LOVE TO OWN A DOG AGAIN W/ME IN MY HOME TO SHOW PEOPLE HOW MUCH I CARE ABOUT MY PET )) .

IT'S COMEDY .

The stadium may need "major renovations" to stay in the Super Bowl rotation but that's all about NFL greed and the fear that (God forbid) some corporate tycoons don't have raindrops falling on their precious scalps. What "major renovations" do you find necessary as a fan?

From my perspective, I find it absolutely comfortable and think the amenities they've added in recent years (like much wider concourse areas) to be nice.

Will NOT be attending "Club Liv" anytime, though.
