Sparano: Henne didn't grade out poorly

Tony Sparano will meet with his players at approximately 1 p.m. today and go over what happened during Sunday's 34-27 loss to Detroit. He will tell them what everyone knows: The Dolphins did not finish well and the result was turning a 10-point lead with five minutes to play into a seven-point loss.

But one thing Sparano will tell his team most of us -- certainly me -- overlooked: Chad Henne didn't play terribly.

During his 14-minute Monday press conference, the Dolphins coach said quarterback Chad Henne did not grade out poorly.

Let that marinate for a second.

Henne completed 29 of 44 passes for 278 yards with 1 TD and 2 INTs for a 72 quarterback rating in a 34-27 loss to the Detroit Lions. He had a QB rating over 100 through three quarters. His fourth-quarter rating was like the Boston weather the Dolphins are about to experience Sunday when they play New England -- in the 20s.

But in grading the film, Miami's coaching staff came to the conclusion Henne wasn't as bad as everyone believed because the player got "only" six minuses. And that is his all-time best as the Dolphins starter.

"In two years it's his lowest," Sparano said. "Two years. I thought at the time the guy was throwing the ball into the wind really well. You guys were out there watching it. I don't know that you know the conditions and what it was like out there but they were pretty stiff during the course of that game. I thought he threw the ball pretty well at times and he completed whatever it was, 66 percent on the day. He had one or two of them that got away from him -- the deep ball to Brandon [Marshall] on the right sideline going into the end zone that he maybe overthrew a shade and a couple of locations. But other than that, it really came down to the last five minutes we didn't finish the game."

That is all true. All of it. Dead on accurate in every detail and fact.

But I think the truth is more important than the facts. So I want to know the truth. And I wanted to know if Sparano believed his quarterback, who was being serenaded with "Henne sucks" chants from the home crowd, played well against Detroit.

"We didn't finish the game in the last five minutes and he threw a couple of interceptions but other than that, one of the interceptions is not his, Armando," Sparano answered, no doubt wishing death upon me. "So yeah, I kind of think on the game, as a whole, when you grade the film, he didn't play poorly. Absolutely didn't play poorly."

Now, you may read theories elsewhere that Sparano was simply spinning the truth so as to not throw Henne under the bus. Not true. When the quarterback stinks rotten, Sparano doesn't defend him anymore. Shouldn't, actually. This is big-boy football and it's time for Henne to grow up.

On this occasion, the coach simply was trying to correct the perception of a terrible game by Henne because that's what the player's grade actually shows. And that's what he would then tell the team. And if he tells the media one thing and the team another, it ruins his credibility with his players.

So Sparano said that which is hard for some people to be convinced about: Henne wasn't awful Sunday.

Look, you don't have to like it. I don't. You know I no longer believe Henne is Miami's future at QB. And I also wouldn't give Henne a pass on that second INT that was returned for a TD because on the play, he had the choice of throwing to five different receivers and he picked the only one that was bracketed while not serving up an opportunity to the three facing man-coverage or Brandon Marshall against a zone.

Yet, the grade is the grade. And the grade did include some negative plays.

"That [first] interception was a combination of a few things," Sparano explained. "One, the decision wasn't great on the interception. Let me say this: First of all, Chad Henne probably, not probably, he only had six minuses out of the entire football game. One of them was on that play particularly and it was a combination of two or three things that happened. The tight end didn't sit down and he kind of drifted on him and they end up getting the ball in the short end of the field. We stop them, but we gave up field goal.

"We have a receiver open. He's open at the sticks and falls down. Slips. The ball ends up in [the defender's] hands. We're going to the right place with the football. He's throwing in the right area. The receiver falls down and they pick it off and we miss three tackles on the play."

I guess I got a football lesson today. A player can stink for five minutes and still not have his entire body of work in a game get slimed. So Henne maybe didn't play well when one considers the entire body of work. But he wasn't terrible, either, according to Miami coaching grades.

Aloco, fired after one season? I think not. Double check that for yourself. Also, Singletary suffered the same fate. Is it the coach or is it the team? Nolan was tied to Alex Smith. 1 bad move. He would not be drafting for us.

Nolan makes sense because of the money he would command would be significantly less than the other names. Ross has to be miffed by the money he owes Tuna & his henchmen.

Unlike Sparano, Nolan is an X's & O's guy. If he can produce a top 10 defense on this team full of new players & young players, it speaks volumes about his abilities to teach.

I think it's fair & safe to say other coaches have gotten second chances & worked out quite nicely don't you?

THE 49'S SAID , THEY DON'T HAVE ANY INTEREST IN COWHER THE HYENA .

We have to thank some of our opponents in pointing out our deficiencies, "That guy(Jason Allen) is a liability out there", Terrell Owens(Thanks, he no longer withus). "Your QB stares down receivers", "we know what play is coming", several of our opponents(thanks, but there's nothing we can do about it, Pennington got hurt.

JOE, I AGREE WITH YOU IN FEW POINTS BUT NOLAN GOT FIRED AFTER ONE SEASON AND TI HIRE HIM NOW IS UNWISE FOR HE'S NOT HUMBLE ENOUGH YET ,

P.S.......MIKE NOLAN WAS THE FIRST COACH IN THE NFL TO WEAR A DESIGN SIUTE AND A TIE BY REEBOOK IN HIS FIRT GAME IN SF W/THE 49'S .AFTER THAT THE NFL SAID NO MORE .

If you believe the old adage, Leadership Starts At The Top, then the only conclusion is to relieve Sparano of his duties. I just don't see him being the one to lead the entire coaching staff. You can't just bank on having excellent coordinators to carry you and make all the necessary adjustments, you have to lead them and keep them on course.

"JOE, I AGREE WITH YOU IN FEW POINTS BUT NOLAN GOT FIRED AFTER ONE SEASON"

Like I said, double check that for yourself, you're wrong.

I AM GETTING MY DINNER READY ,LATER JOE I WILL CHECK IT OUT

Aloco, he was head coach from 05-08...3.5 seasons.

MIKE NOLAN COACHED 3 FULL SEASONS IN SF ,I FOUND A NUGGET FOR YOU JOE;;;;;;;; THE SF DEFENSE WAS THE WORST DEFENSE DURING MR NOLAN TENURE, THAT TELL US HE BETTER STAYS WHERE HE CAN MANGE ONLY ONE AREA WHICH IS THE DEFENSE .

Aloco, LOL Yes because both teams are identical therefore, the results are guaranteed to be exactly the same. This gets funnier with every post.

I have a few ideas and guys dont kill me for saying them it's just a thought. First everyone is saying that we need a TE that can stretch the field. I have the solution switching Roberto Wallace to TE. He has the size, strength, and speed. I'm not sure if it would work but it may be a good switch. Second I think everyone pretty much knows that all of the top tier QB's will be gone when we draft. So my question is this what does everyone think of Colin Kapernick, Ricky Stanzui (super accurate and a leader), Pat Devlin, or TCU Dalton

xxxxxx

MR NOLAN NEVER BEEN IN THE PLAYOFFS W/49'S.

SPARANO HAVE ..........

ESPN's Chris Mortensen was asked about sparano's future in Miami...he gives him 50-50% chance of staying.

When asked about Cowher's move from the broadcast booth back to the sidelines, the first and ONLY team he mentioned were the Miami Dolphins....

BK, I don't think it's a bad idea. We do have bad experience w/Wilford trying to make that switch. Granted, Wallace is supposed to have superior speed but as a fan of this team, we need guys who are ready now. We can't keep bringing in guys & trying to make them something they've never been.

Wake, although it turned out well is the exception. Misi, jury still out. Francis, haven't seen him on D in ages, Wilford, released. This is part of the reason why we are average. We need guys who we know can step in & play. We can't keep developing guys in hopes someday they become something.

While I'm not opposed to the transition, there isn't allot there to make me feel it would work.

LOOK! ITS PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!!! HENNE HAS SLIGHT POTENTIAL BUT HE HAS LOST GAMES FOR US ALLLLL YEAR! GIVE ME A BREAK GUY! LOOK AT BREES, RYAN, BRADY, MANNING. The best teams in the leauge are ran but great QBS!!!!! HENNE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO PLAY AT THAT LEVEL!!!!!!!!!! WE NEED CHANGEEEE

Sparano has been to the playoffs with the Niners? LOL In all seriousness, you've made it clear you're not a fan of Nolan for HC.

And contrary to my post earlier, your grammer & sentence structure has fallen apart in recent posts.

I don't think Ross has the balls to fire Sparano...

JOE,

DO YOU UNDERSTAND ENGLISH..I SAID......

NOLAN NEVER BEEN IN THE PLAYOFFS W/49'S

SPARANO HAVE W/THE DOLPHINS.............

DID I SAY I AM TRYING HARD JOE ,FORGIVE ME .

Ok guys, I've reflected long and hard. I've gone back and checked all the comments over the last few days, and here's my unvarnished, unbiased, unabashedly non-partisan take on the matter:

The right thinking here is mine and those that think like me. The wrong thinking is all those who don't think like I do.

I went back and forth on it, and trust me, I diligently, judiciously took both sides and made my conclusion.

Now that I've done such a stellar job on that analysis, I think we should rally around my position and close the book on the matter.

If Mr. Ross comes onto this blog, he should be reading a UNANIMOUS DECISION.

So I implore ALL OF YOU to think the way I do and those that think like me.

Think about it.

THEY CALL NOLAN IN SF...THE SUIT, THE EMPTY SUIT .

THEY CALL SINGLATRY ........THE EYE DOCTOR

ALoco....YOU HAVE THE CAPS LOCK ON...PLEASE USE LOWER CASE LETTERS AS ITS HARD TO READ WHEN EVERY STINKIN WORD IS CAPPED!

By the way, where's my man Mark from Toronto? What's up Mark, you think you can go on vacation in Oh Canada somewhere without access to the internet? WHAT TYPE OF FAN ARE YOU? MARK, beckon my clarion call! Appear.

Oh, one home loss and you throw in the towel? Ok, I see how it is Mark. Maybe you've gone to the dark side, Buffalo.

lol NH, you're JUST realizing that now about ALoco? Where you been the past couple years homey?

Been here...its just now starting to bug me:-)

Aloco, LOL I do understand English! It's your English I'm having trouble with.

Also, I assume you meant to say: I did say I was trying hard, forgive me.

I'm trying really hard to decipher your comments. It's a team effort.

wish granted NH ,

we are going to move up in the draft to number 14 if we lose to new england .

Yo DC...U think Ross has the balls to fire Tony?

I don't think Ross has balls or he would have canned him already.

Folks, Aloco is a joker...he switches from good English to phony English all the time and he uses several handles here. See 'TH TRUTH' above, there he takes the opposite side of everything he says as Aloco. He is just playing with you all and you all are biting!

Thank you ALoco....I like the new look.

Yes, we draft at #14 which is a good spot...not in the top 10 where the $$ has become crazy.

All you geniuses go read Tim Graham's article at espn.com. He says we're one of 7 teams NOT to draft a QB in the 1st round since '98. That's a DECADE +. And you schmucks don't want to draft one this upcoming year either. Like our last 1st round picks have been SO OUTSTANDING. Other than Long, WHICH 1st-round pick exactly has been so great for us. That's TWELVE years of busts or blunders, when we could have taken a chance ONCE on the most important position on the field.

WELL, DIMWITS, time has come, WE'RE DRAFTING A QB 1st ROUND come HELL or HIGH WATER. Now shove THAT in your pipes and smoke it!

passerby, we are fully aware of Aloco's multiple personality disorder. I personally find him quite entertaining.

NH, yes, I think he does. But those in the know say it's about 50-50. I think it matters who would come here. He doesn't have the balls to dump him for another 1st-time or no name coach (which would be my preference frankly). I think if Cowher/Gruden agree to come, then he'll do it. If not, then Sparano will be here next year.

DC, but what if all the good ones are gone? Are we going to take a 3rd grade QB in round one just to say we did? Haven't we learned from drafting guys WAY to high like Pat White, Patrick Turner etc?

Joe, how do we know passerby isn't ALoco? Trying to get ahead of things.

DC...question is:
Do we move UP to grab a QB or stay put at #14?

Thank goodness Christmas came when it did. That beer making kit should come in handy during the off season. Think I'll forego the NFL tonight for the Insight Bowl and see if Gabbert has what it takes to be the next star QB for the Miami Dolphins.

DC, valid question. For all we know, I could be him.

ALL IT TAKES IS LOCKS CAP AND ENGLISH BAD EVERY SO OFTEN TO FOOL EVER ONE!!!

I had lunch today with Ireland. The game plan will be to trade down as much as possible, draft a bunch of later rounders and look for some acorns. No QB #1, sorry.

the first 10 teame to draft;

1-car.........luck
2-det...................no QB
3-cin.................. QB for sure
4-bills.................QB for sure
5-ariz................ QB mallet
6-cowboyes......... QB????????
7-DENVER............ NO QB
8-SF.....................QB.........Alex smith was declared bust.
9-min.................. QB for sure
10.browns............. qb for sure

now that looks like we got to move up if we need a qb .

That's why you trade up Joe. Point is, we've tried everything else already: drafted a 2nd-rounder or later, traded for a QB, upgraded a backup, etc. There's NOTHING left to do but what we HAVEN'T done, which is draft a QB with our 1st pick. Again, I'm not a talent scout, but I bet there's 5-8 possibilities out there who could be good QBs in the NFL. If we pick 14-15, then you're telling me 3/4 of the teams ahead of us will pick a QB? Doubt that. I don't believe the hype. There WILL BE a QB at LEAST as good as Henne out there (who could turn out to be much better or even a franchise QB).

But you'll never know if you never try, that's my point. Unless we're getting the best at another IMPORTANT position of need (i.e. RB), then there should be no other reason to draft a QB. I don't think Odrick or Allen were really MUST HAVE picks we couldn't have done without. So, since NO DOLPHINS GM knows how to pick a 1st-rounder (unless it's the #1 pick), then it's worth a try, even if he's a bust.

what passerby ?

So your saying 7 of the first 10 picks will be QB's?
Never in the history of the NFL Draft has QB gone 7 of 10...EVER!

if ALoco's right and the Cowboys draft a QB (which they won't, they have 3 fine QBs), then we can take one of theirs.

But, I don't think the Cowboys take a QB. I don't thin k it's a lock Cincy or the Bills do. Or Minn or Browns (they both have young QBs, Browns took a QB last year).

So, my math says there are maybe 3-4 teams who will get QBs 1st-round before us most likely if we stay where we are.

Exactly NH. Also, no one's talking Cam Newton. Just like no one talked Tim Tebow (even me). But, Tebow played last few games, RIGHT? And he won last few games, RIGHT?

Shows what we all know!! Sorry, I'll believe my own eyes before I believe all you fake scouts and the real scouts who are right about as much as my local weatherman!

NH, we got to think like how the nfl of today thinks,a qb means the team toady...look what ryan did for falcons ....i am saying there are about 5-7 team looking for a QB ,they can follow the bellichick recipe to fill the other crappy spots .

To me I don't care what your grade is. If your team loses its a poor grade. I don't know how many points you get deducted for throwing 2 picks to lose a game in under 5 minutes. But if that doesn't change your grade from an A to an F then the grading system is flawed.

I love Sparono's way of coaching (never throw anyone under the bus) but there are other ways to let the fan base know that you are not oblivious to everything around you and your record. One minute you say you are disappointed, the next its no ones fault. Everyone graded out. Its one or the other. If your OK with grading out as opposed to winning.. then I will take any one new that wants to coach the Dolphins.

Bottom line if you can't get Cowher in here.. who you gonna get? Hopefully Sparono is just not tipping his hand and he drafts a qb or an interior line early. As for this week go Patriots! Better draft picks Fins.

PS to Crowder's statement the other day. We are not fair weather fans.Fair weather fans means you only come out when the team is winning. We are there..you can hear us booing you. Do you expect to hear cheers when you lose to teams with 4 or 5 wins?? Play better and you will hear the cheers again

Well the people in New Orleans are happy that they weren't as impatient as the dolphans here. Sean payton goes
10-4
7-9
8-8
The first 3 years. And by most of your arguments here he should have been fired cause they regressed. Then he wins the super bowl the next year. Change for the sake of change is not always good.
I bet Ross stays put.

Min ...in dire state for need of QB
bills....in dire state for need of QB
Browns will die to get a qb..they still regret the jets getting their hands on sanchez.
Carolina will get Luck.....it's a givin
bills,,,,in dire need for a qb

NFL Talent scouts know who all the top QB prospect are...they rarely miss on talent.

Here are the AFC playoff QB's and their draft position...(Note the Pats just plain know how to pick talent)

Brady - #199
Rolisberger- #11
Manning - #1
Sanchez - #3
Flacco - #18
Matt Ryan - #2
Matt Cassell - 7th round

With the expection of Bill Belichick and his crazy ability with draft picks, every other team has a QB drafted in the first round.

....I'm starting to see the light here folks, if a QB is available @ #14 that is widely known as a NFL caliber QB, we pick em.

This article sums up the last 9000 blog posts:

Craig M,
You and I are on the same page. I think Henne has all the potential in the world to be a great quarterback. It's just going to take some new coaching and play calling to build his confidence. And a run game to open things up. The Patriots have a nobody at running back, Woodhead, Green-Ellis, Sammy Morris. No superstars there but the play calling and everyone working as a unit opens the whole offense up and Brady benefits from it. I don't what he's got this year lik 33 TD to only 4 INT.

NHFINSFAN let me ask you something... You think it's sheer luck that the pats got great qb's in such late picks?? No... Bill bellicheck and the rest of the pats coaches are hands down best in the league.... They would have made jay Fiedler look like Dan marino

Henne is not a leader. Sparanos positive attitude towards everything scares the crap out of me

I AGREE!
Hope that the PATS, this Sunday, RUN OVER, CRAP ON, CRUSH, and DISMANTLE(of course EMBARASSING THE TEAM IS A GIVEN) the Fins if it will in any way contribute to ROSS FINDING HIS BALLS and circumcising the PATHETIC COACHES AND PLAYERS(and being wise enough to keep the best) in this organization.
OFF WITH THEIR HEADS and OFF WITH THEIR BALLS!
ROMPER HAS SPOKEN

A couple of things about Henne:
1. Any time any QB throws +30 passes the likelihood of INTs and / or poor performance doubles. Blame the OC for the calls

2. I watched Drew Brees make 2 costly INTs in the 4th qrt and motivate himself to bounce back and lead his team to a win. Henne folds like a lawn chair. Blame the QB.

This team is a good QB (leader and difference maker) away from being a legit contender. Augmenting the O-Line will help the run.

DOLPHiN FANS UNTiL WE GET RiD DEM iDiOTS n Da FRONT 0FFiCE-EXPECT EXTREME FUTILITY FOR 2011-Da PATRI0TS WILL EXP0SE EVERY D0LPHINS WEAKNESS AGAIN!
