Why not the Dolphins? Let us count the ways

The Dolphins are officially in "Why not us?" mode for the third consecutive year.

What is "Why not us?" mode you ask?

It is defined by not being consistent enough early in the season to have a clear and certain path to the playoffs late in the year. The team asking the question finds itself teetering on success or disaster late in the season. It is defined as being bad enough to be in dire straits, but still good enough to perhaps pull off the improbable and sneak into the postseason.

And that is exactly where the Dolphins see themselves today on the eve of Sunday's possible season-defining meeting against the New York Jets. The Dolphins are 6-6 and longshots to make the playoffs, but coach Tony Sparano is selling his team on the idea that a longshot sometimes sneaks into the playoffs in the NFL.

So, why wouldn't it be the Dolphins?

“This is an important game," Sparano said Friday. "My message to the team is that, the team that we’re playing was 6-6 last year at this time and ended up losing in the AFC Championship game, so … ran off a bunch of wins at the end of the year. We’re still in the hunt, somebody from that group that is in the hunt right now can possibly do that. So, why not us.”

OK, if you are a fan that only wants to read the happy news, please stop reading now and go to the comment section to agree the Dolphins have a solid chance to get in the playoffs. It's all good, see you during the live blog Sunday.

If, however, you want the truth, stick around. Here goes:

Why not the 2010 Dolphins?

Well, for one thing the comparison to the 2009 Jets is ridiculous on so many levels I cannot believe Sparano went there.

First, the Jets had one of the NFL's best running game last season. They were No. 1. Their defense was also dominant. They were No. 1 in the NFL in total yards (not important) and points allowed (very important). And New York still required had to profit from the fact both Cincinnati and Indianapolis basically laid down -- playing reserves for a majority of their games versus New York -- for the Jets to back into the playoffs.

The Dolphins have neither the running game at this point nor the defense to carry them into the postseason. And, the chance a couple of teams will lay down for them at the end of the year is not great. The Patriots might, might do it if they've already clinched home field advantage before the regular-season finale, but there is no assurance of that.

Barring that, Miami must travel to Foxboro where New England is undefeated this year and just administered a 45-3 whipping of New York. So the comparison between the 2010 Dolphins and 2009 Jets is just not logical.

I will tell you that "Why not us" mode worked for Miami in 2008. The Dolphins struggled mightily early in the season before finding their identity and rolling to the AFC East title. But, again, that team enjoyed a different and much more favorable situation for turning "Why not us" into "It is us!" than today's Miami team.

The Dolphins had an easier schedule in 2008. Their running game was superior than it is now. Their quarterback, Chad Pennington, didn't make mistakes and ultimately was in the conversation for league MVP. The Patriots didn't have Tom Brady, who was out for the season with a knee injury. The Dolphins were healthy almost top to bottom. And the Jets collapsed.

It was a wonderful sum of all the right circumstances that led Miami to the playoffs.

This year, the Dolphins are not a healthy team. Just Friday, the club announced both right tackle Vernon Carey and wide receiver Brian Hartline are out for Sunday's game.

So the Dolphins might once again be asking everyone "Why not us."

Unfortunately for them, this year there are myriad reasons why not.

Ah, could somebody please post "first" so I can make a comment?

Geeze!

"Why not us" That's the song Sparano will be singing when he no longer coach the Dolphins, and it will have a chorus line "Why ME"..

Great article Armando. I am puzzled by the Dolphins, each game on offense is mind boggling.
The TE has a catch here and there, the WR has a few catches here and there, and of course the RB only had 1-2 game where they had a good game. When is it that you are going to hear Henne to Marshall or Henne to Hartline for TD, there is a lot of games where you are asking yourself who is going to win the game on offense?

I've read a lot of Homes posts and I just watched and episode of Jesse Ventura's Conspiracy Files.

It's all sudenly becoming crystal clear to me. I've been lied to my entire life.

The media, Hollywood, even my Mom and Dad with that Santa Claus garbage.

At this point in my life it sucks having to reassess all of my major beliefs.

I don't even believe Horton Heard a Who anymore!

Why Not Us!!!!

First! There ya go Odin

Thought that I would help ya out there my friend

Sparano just don't get it. "Why not us" simple stupid its Henne is why not us and also your OC and your self. Have the balls to make moves by benching Henne next year and firing that OC that you have and hire some one more creative with the running game. Hopefully Mr Ross recognizes that He need a new head coach and maybe it's us soon. IMO.

We should intentionally lose the remainder of our games so we can make an attempt to draft Cam Newton.

Come on guys, ease off of Sparano, the guy is trying everything to save his coaching career. Trust me the guy is not thinking about the playoffs anymore, the guy is thinking how do I save my job. Truth is he is in desperation mode and not why not us mode.

For some reason this team got the crazy idea tat they could go away from the running game and sling the ball around like the days of Dan Marino. One problem, Henne is not Marino. What people don't realize is that even if Pennington was healthy and starting the out come would not be any different because the lack of a running game. Pennington can't carry a team with his arm, nor can Henne and nor can Thigpen. This team made a huge mistake throwing its identity away like that. Instead of building on what they already had, they went back into rebuilding mode.

Tony wants to keep his job that is all

He isn't going to go to reporters and say, we are done for the season and looking forward to picking 8th. So of course he is going to say, Hey lets win one for the Gipper. Henne is going to throw for 400 yds per game. The r & r express is going to run for 200 yards per game and every team is going to be beat 48-0. Carpenter misses a kick so we can have a controversy.

I'm also tired of the Sparano bashing. He's a good man.

As a matter of fact, the criticism of his enthusiam makes me want to puke.

Would you prefer a coach that didn't give a crap?

Sorry, but I absolutely want this man returning next year over some fraud like Jon Gruden.

And since I own a block of 20 season-tickets, you can be DAMN sure I'll be exercising whatever vote I get in the matter.

(rest assured it's more than a blog entry)

First of all Armando is an idiot for posting a bunch of BS comparing the Jets of 09' with this years Phins team. The play-offs are not quite out of reach just yet. We have a slim shot but at least we have one.02. The only way we can get in is if the Ravens, Jets, Steelers, Colts and Jaguars all tail spin and lose a bunch of games. Out of the 5 teams mentioned, two will win their division (Colts & Steelers) that would leave the Phins, Ravens, Jets and Jaguars fighting for the last play-off spot.
Miami has the easiest schedule but needs to beat the Jets and hope they self destruct (lose all their games and end up 9-7). The Ravens have the Texans, Saints, Browns and Bengals. If they lose three of those games, then we have a shot at getting in. The Jags have the Raiders, Indy, Redskins and Texans. We need them to go 2-2. So here is the recap: The Phins have to go 4-0, Jets have to go 0-4, Ravens have to go 1-3 and the Jaguars have to go 2-2 for the Phins to get the last play-off spot. The Jets are hurting a lot worse than people see and Sanchez has been exposed. If the Phins make the play-offs, I hope every idiot that posted negative comments on how bad of a season we've had shuts the hell up and starts supporting the team.

Let's see if you guy's can do something right this week end and beat the New Jersey Jets! Blitz on every play for the first Qt. and give that Q.B.something to think about and you can beat them. Nothing to lose, get mean and nasty and slap someone around.

I am adopting "volcano spits the tangerine bra" as my personal credo.

Thank you, King Harold.

I'm not worried, everything should be alright now. Ross took the players for a steak dinner and went to see the play Lombardi for inspiration. Well that should fix everything! Why not talk to Shula for inspiration! Or Marino ( maybe on how to throw the ball ) ! Csonka to inspire the run game. Maybe Clayton and Duper to inspire the receivers.Or even the 72 team on how to play and win as a TEAM!!!! Hell no, they go to New York to see a play about aa coach from Wisconsin who's dead now. So actually if they get inspired it will be by a bunch of people acting like footbaall coaches and players - DAMN. I get it! The plan is to get this team to act like football players too!!!

Sparano, the Dolphins, it's fans are all dillusionals. This is a team whose favorite play is the Field Goal. This is a team playing 80's offense and still talk about running game. Running game ? with whom are they running the ball with. Defense are not scare of Henne. They know Brandon Marshall can't beat them by himself. Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams don't scare anybody anymore.

sparano is always looking for these stupid comparisons. here's an idea. coach to win games instead of just keeping it close. take it to a team like we did the raiders. we used more offensive formations in that game alone than we have the rest combined. be the aggressor.

before long he'll be comparing himself to wade phillips. he sucked but someone was stupid enough to hire him again.

mike nolan for head coach;let him start assembling a staff.

instead of why not us. How about why not just improve on Coaching, better play calling better excecution better strength trainning to cut down on injuries. oh and better blocking better qb. better special teams. um forget it!! never mind

By the way windy and rain for the game... miami cant play in the rain..... 6-7

you are right Armando no way the fins reel off 4 in a row and even if we did it still might not be enough, but it would feel good.Better QB play and we are a playoff team we are not that far away go fins

Why not us? Because you did not get the right players in free agency... You only got 1 each for Offense and Defense and thought that a miracle will convert our mediocre WR, RB, SS, FS into pro bowl caliber players.... Thats WHY, until you are able to beat the elite teams with good drives, with poise and look like a pro team..... Not a bunch of kids who trip over themselves.....
OH and by the way CHANGE THE DARN UNIFORMS ITS 2010, STOP LIVING IN 1972 MODE!!!!!!!!!

Dear Mr. Salguero

Instead of "Why not us" why don't they use the song by Johhn Prine called "In spite of ourselves"

Sample

"In spite of ourselves
We'll end up a'sittin' on a rainbow
Against all odds
Honey, we're the big door prize
We're gonna spite our noses
Right off of our faces
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes.

Great song and a great video....U tube

Soiled :)

These last 4 games to me aren't about the playoffs it's about the future .Let's see how Henne plays how sporano coaches, how this team finishes, if they win 3 out of 4 or better i'm
encouraged if they go 8-8 or worse not so much, then the need to take a hard look at the team.

Our defense could hold up the "Why Not Us" scenario, but they don't have the offense or ST to do it, plain and simple.

And, like others said it's not just personnel, it's coaching and injuries too. Defense has been able to overcome injuries, not so on the offensive side.

"Win 1 game" should be the motto from here on in. Just win this next game, and take it like that. No need to look ahead when you can't do anything about the outcome.

Miami 10-6,and we make te playoffs, why NOT us?. Is there anyone out there, that holds hope, that when the Dolphins hit the field, tomorrow at the new meadowlands. That we might be a improved team? better execution? a running game? other teams improve week by week, the Dolphins look good one week, and lousy the next week. I like Coach Sparano, and not because were from Connecticut, I do think their is lack of Disipline on this team. Ross needs to have a long talk with Sparano. Remember Mr. Ross predicted a Super Bowl appearance this year. and we all know Miami is NOT going to the Super Bowl, I can't help but wonder, how much of a Negative effect this will have on a young and impressionable team. NO More Coaching Changes,( except Henning). I believe Sparano should be given (1) more year, if they make the playoffs, give him an extention, if not, then you go Coach shopping.

3 years it's supposed to be 3 years!! Henning ruined this team!make no mistake with a half decent OC the team is 8-4 right now! Is it really that unfathomable for Miami to run the table?? We win here. Great!! Jets moral is down. Kick em when there down. Well roll off two tough wins an New englands got home field and we cost past there back ups!!! Bam were 10-6 an were on our way to Pitt for some revenge!!??? Any takers??

I don't know if I can take watching Rex Ryan on the sideline with no shirt on twisting his nipples again........

Team has regressed every year under Sparano.
We still don't have a passing game, and we have lost our running game.
Stupid Trifecta told that the fundation of the franchise was in both lines.
Look at who we start in the OL: Long and 4 street free agents. Where are the young guys we drafted? What about player development? The future of the franchise?

THE ONE COACH WHO'S KNOWN FOR NOT HAVING ANY THING TO DO WITH FIST BUMPS IS TOM COUGHLIN , HE'S RUMORED TO BE FIRED IN THE END OF THE SEASON AND PLACE COACH SPARANO IN MIAMI .

you cannot ask a young QB to develop without a decent running game.
Sparano messed up the OL and that's on him

I would also like to say. If we can some how sneak in the playoffs, we would make some noise!! With the teams ability to win on the road!! Seriously! I guarantee a wildcard win! Even against the colts!! I believe that much!!
An just so you all remember. Miami was tied at 7 with NE at the half. Before our ( little white bus) special teams said here. Would you like a free game!?!! If we lose to the jets it's over anyway and they will start playing back ups next week.

IF DOLPHINS FINISH 10-6 AND JETS FINISH 10-6 DOLPHINS GO TO THE PLAYOFFS THE JETS STAY HOME THAT'S A FACT!

Wy not us? I'll tell you why. Risk vs Reward. We don't risk so we don't see enough rewards. The teams we need to beat have learned how to minimize mistakes when they risk. But, they are willing to risk to be able to reap the reward.
I am not one of those that blames our O.C. For our misfortunes because Henne does have the choice to call the play that he deems correct. It's just that with his accuracy issues, he is better off not risking anything. There are a lot of QB's in the league that are able to throw that fade route to the corner of the end zone to people who are not called "The Beast" and reaped the reward more times than they have made mistakes because they have better accuracy and location with their throws. If you are accurate, you minimize the risk.
It's just not enough when our competitors have learned that reaping more rewards than mistakes is smarter than no rewards and no mistakes.
I think that this coaching staff fears risk and is afraid to move in a direction that places emphasis on what they need to do to get to the reward.
I am not going to try to convince anyone that Thigpen is the answer, but, there were times when the offense gave him some protection that he looked very accurate. Thigpen may not be the answer, but, with his accuracy, he could be a step in the right direction if given the chance. If we don't get to take a look at him now, we won't get a chance later.
Accuracy minimizes risk, maybe Parcels should add that to his criteria for a Q.B.

I have been shouting WHY NOT US!!!!! since training camp.

Armando, sometimes I feel like you steal my stuff...to many coincidences

every player needs to play like they have a set.

The offense plays like their in a witness relocation program.

Lets face it our season is done the rest of the games are about pride and seeing how Henne responds. Its almost time to start thinking of the draft. Im guessing that we will be picking around 14 to 16 range in the draft. I say lets move down get a second rd. That should probably move us to the early 20's. There are several options here. We can try to trade down again to get more picks or we can draft OL, a CB, or RB. I have a feeling that Will Allen and Al Harris will be back to compete for the nickel spot and nolan carrol hasn't been bad in coverage. I say try to trade down a few more spots to get either another 2nd or 3rd rd. In the late first rd get Penn State C Wisneiwski. In the 2nd go with either a good pulling gaurd or possibly best available RB. In the 3rd we have to draft Iowa QB Ricky Stanzi! He has all the intangibles and has the leadership quailities that Henne lacks. He could push him for the spot. In the later rounds I like Kentucky RB Locke. And the rest of the draft is BPA.

Kris ,

armando didn't steal any thing.SPARANO USED YOUR WORDS TALKING TO THE TEAM ON THE AIRPLANE HEADING TO NY .HE WAS TALKING ABOUT THE JETS MADE TO THE PLAYOFFS IN ONE OF THESE YEAR WHILE HAVING RECORD OF 6-6 BUT FAILED TO POINT OUT THAT TERE WERE NO OTHER TEAMS WITH RECORD OF 10-2 OR 9-3

"Why not us" is the way Sparano has to approach it this week. Of course comparing this situation to the Jets of 09 is apples and oranges. The Jets had an easier road to finish. They also hadn't lost to everyone above them. Also, the top wildcard teams hadn't seperated as they have this year.

Unless I am figuring incorrectly if we lose any one of our remaining "cupcake games" and Baltimore wins any one of it's "gauntlet games", we're out. That simple.

Aloco,

It doesn't matter.....its not like they were copy write protected.....when did you becomes so sensitive.....and good at english?

DAN DARLINGTON JUST REPORTED THAT HE ASKED MR ROSS THIS QUESTION ..... DOES TONY SPARANO HAS A JOB SECURITY ?

THEN THE SECURITY PEOPLE STEPPED IN AND PUSHED DAN AWAY ,STUUNED , HE LOOKED AT ROSS WHO SAID ..I LOVE THESE GUYS .

OH, THE SECURITY PEOPLE HAD ENDED THE INTERVIEW OD DAN DARLINGTON

KRIS, I THOUGHT THAT WOULD HELP .I DON'T CARE .

sporano is long on slogans and short on results. he is in desperation mode to save his job. he is clearly in over his head. that's what happens when you get your job because of cronyism instead of what you have accomplished. their evaluation of henne was atrocious. and who keeps a backup whose shoulder is so fragile that it pops out in their FIRST play from scrimmage in a game? if you picked a random, somewhat knowledgeable football fan off the street and gave them the GM position, I doubt they could have done worse than these guys have in the draft and free agency. again, let us hope ross finds this mediocrity unacceptable.

DAN DARLINGTON ON ROSS.....(( IT MADE ME FEEL LIKE TENAGE PUNK AND A THREAT TO ROSS SAFTY ))..lol

Why not us??????????/ what a joke. we couldnt beat the Browns for petes sake. We have had many chances to right the ship but we havent come thru. We have a moron for a head coach , how can even compare what the Jets did last year to us???? He is an idiot. This team is full of Fat Tony's mistakes, we are missing Hartline , do we go and pick up or work out another wide out??? Hell no, we go and sign ANOTHER OLINEMAN. Our head coach who wasan OLine coach still cant get it right. Why not us??? How bout us fans getting new coach, one named either Gruden or Cohwer. We are looking at 7-9 folks and hopefully chance to draft either Newton or Mallet as new QB

Heres a reason, The Dolphins have a reciver in Julius Pruitt thats 6'2" and can run a 4.40 and he sits on the sideline. mmmmm.....

Why not us??
Because we have a offensive minded coach that has no clue on how to run an offense and has got a senial old bag showing him how. Usually the teams with offensive minded head coaches like kubiak, or payton, or mcdaniels have really good offenses not good defenses. Not our offensive minded coach. Would any team hire Sparano as OC if he gets fired from the phins? I highly doubt it

(rest assured it's more than a blog entry)

Tool.......Or its tonys wife.

Why not them?.....because they have an inability to win the games they SHOULD win. They should have beat Cleveland at home last week and they should have beat Pittsburgh at home.....and let's forget the screwup from the officials. They were the better team in the Pittsburgh game and couldn't move the ball at the end with 90 seconds still on the clock. They don't DESERVE to been in the playoffs and that the end of the story. New OC next year, better OL, someone to play alongside Dansby and a better running game and we're a playoff team next year. Let's go.....get it done!!

Also, Crowder needs to go. Guy is a bust. Hes always hurt and the only thing hes good at is running his mouth and his career numbers are absolutely horrible.

crowder ON THE BROADWAY SHOW LAST NIGHT ; ((I DON'T HAVE A TUXEDO BUT I HAVE A NICE JACKET AND A SCARF ,I MAY IMPRESS THE ACTRESS,BTW I NEVER BEEN TO BROADWAY PLAY )).lol

ross refused to comment on THE FUTURE OF THE HC IS A SIGN HIS DAYS ARE NUMBERS.

Its flooded in here with the tears of horrible fans that would rather complain and point fingers then bother showing up at games and cheering for their team.
These fans answers to everything is one coach or one free agent, or one draft pick away from fixing the mess we were left with.

Suffering through trading picks for washed up qb's and horribad picks through free agency and the draft, but you still try.

Firing Sparano and bring in someone new wont fix this, you know that.

Cowardly weekend warrior couch coaches, like we should listen to you morons. One days its "Let Henne lose", next its "Why are we throwing so much?" Then its "Give the ball to marshall",then next its "Why are we trowing to him so much?" Idiots.Clueless.

Just admit it, you have no clue, then find a new team to cheer for.

Thank you and good riddens

Hey Flipper, Armando didn't compare the Dolphins to the jets. Tony Sparano was the one that compared the Dolphins to the Jets and Armando said that was ridiculous.

I think the idiot is the one that cannot comprehend what he reads.

Agreed. I would like to add that all though the Miami defense isn't as good as the Jets were last season, they're still pretty damn good. I believe they're ranked 4th in the league and profootball focus actually moved them to the number one slot this week. It seems that Armando is writing them off as mediocre when they are not. Offense is the problem and has been since Marino left. Our defense has been consistently in the upper half of the league.
