Why not the Dolphins? Let us count the ways

The Dolphins are officially in "Why not us?" mode for the third consecutive year.

What is "Why not us?" mode you ask?

It is defined by not being consistent enough early in the season to have a clear and certain path to the playoffs late in the year. The team asking the question finds itself teetering on success or disaster late in the season. It is defined as being bad enough to be in dire straits, but still good enough to perhaps pull off the improbable and sneak into the postseason.

And that is exactly where the Dolphins see themselves today on the eve of Sunday's possible season-defining meeting against the New York Jets. The Dolphins are 6-6 and longshots to make the playoffs, but coach Tony Sparano is selling his team on the idea that a longshot sometimes sneaks into the playoffs in the NFL.

So, why wouldn't it be the Dolphins?

“This is an important game," Sparano said Friday. "My message to the team is that, the team that we’re playing was 6-6 last year at this time and ended up losing in the AFC Championship game, so … ran off a bunch of wins at the end of the year. We’re still in the hunt, somebody from that group that is in the hunt right now can possibly do that. So, why not us.”

OK, if you are a fan that only wants to read the happy news, please stop reading now and go to the comment section to agree the Dolphins have a solid chance to get in the playoffs. It's all good, see you during the live blog Sunday.

If, however, you want the truth, stick around. Here goes:

Why not the 2010 Dolphins?

Well, for one thing the comparison to the 2009 Jets is ridiculous on so many levels I cannot believe Sparano went there.

First, the Jets had one of the NFL's best running game last season. They were No. 1. Their defense was also dominant. They were No. 1 in the NFL in total yards (not important) and points allowed (very important). And New York still required had to profit from the fact both Cincinnati and Indianapolis basically laid down -- playing reserves for a majority of their games versus New York -- for the Jets to back into the playoffs.

The Dolphins have neither the running game at this point nor the defense to carry them into the postseason. And, the chance a couple of teams will lay down for them at the end of the year is not great. The Patriots might, might do it if they've already clinched home field advantage before the regular-season finale, but there is no assurance of that.

Barring that, Miami must travel to Foxboro where New England is undefeated this year and just administered a 45-3 whipping of New York. So the comparison between the 2010 Dolphins and 2009 Jets is just not logical.

I will tell you that "Why not us" mode worked for Miami in 2008. The Dolphins struggled mightily early in the season before finding their identity and rolling to the AFC East title. But, again, that team enjoyed a different and much more favorable situation for turning "Why not us" into "It is us!" than today's Miami team.

The Dolphins had an easier schedule in 2008. Their running game was superior than it is now. Their quarterback, Chad Pennington, didn't make mistakes and ultimately was in the conversation for league MVP. The Patriots didn't have Tom Brady, who was out for the season with a knee injury. The Dolphins were healthy almost top to bottom. And the Jets collapsed.

It was a wonderful sum of all the right circumstances that led Miami to the playoffs.

This year, the Dolphins are not a healthy team. Just Friday, the club announced both right tackle Vernon Carey and wide receiver Brian Hartline are out for Sunday's game.

So the Dolphins might once again be asking everyone "Why not us."

Unfortunately for them, this year there are myriad reasons why not.

You people are idiots. Who in the F is "DAN DARLINGTON"? Jeeeeeeezus H..........

Sometimes the idiot is the person who sticks up for a stranger he never met.

And then there's the idiot reporter who twists someones words to fit into his grinch who stole Christmas story. Sparano said the Jets were able to come back from 6-6 to make the playoffs so why can't they. What he didn't do was directly compare the Jets from last season to the Dolphins of this season and claim "we're just as good". NO,,,,,,, HE DID NOT DO THAT. He was simply comparing two teams records to show that it's not over yet. So now we have a bunch of idiots. The one who wrote the article and the ones who can't see past their own agendas to actually understand what was written.

Sorry Aloco, I didn't realize you were the only one saying that and I didn't mean to be harsh. You're all right in my book bud, simple mistake, no biggie.

3 Years Of This Regime and This Team Is Not Better Or Even Close To The Pats and Jets , We Need a Change At The Front Office At Least One More Year Won't Make Us Better Than The Jets Or Pats , Henning Has To Go And why Not Hire Some Talent Evaluator To Draft For Us , Too Many Misses By Ireland Or Parcells , 100 Million Dollars Expend Building An Offensive Line and Is worst Today That When Grove And Smiley Were The Starters, But The Thing That Bothers Me The Most Is The Drafting Of This Team Only two Players You Can Say For Sure Will Be Here For A Long Time Vontae Davis And Jake Long , The Rest of The Picks Nothing Especial , Average at Best

I'm a clueless idiot, can I play?

You make it tough though when you say us idiots can only pick one coach, one free agent and one draft.

This idiot needs at least two finger points for each category.

Coaches: My first two picks are Dan Henneing and the pizza boy Pasqaloni. These two have combined to show a level of incompetence that hasn't been witnessed since the expansion Tampa Bay Bucaneers. Execution? Execute the both of them.

Free Agent: I have definately have to go with Girbil Wilson and Ernest Wilford. These two acorns contributions rank somewhere between none and single handedly costing us games.

Draft picks: On this one I'll only point one finger. The idea behind the pick, and how high of a pick was wasted, it should definitely count for two. Pat White, yehaw! Looking back in hindsight, Pats biggest contribution could be summed up by saying he maybe more than anyone else helped expedite the new "cheapshot" rule. He got knocked the F out so hard they had to medvac him! He got hit so hard it hurt me, literally. When I saw it, I curled up in the fetal position, rolled off my "coaches couch" and hit the floor with a dull thud!

Face it...our team has been rumbling, stumbling, bumbling to the heights of mediocrity! And, next year may be more of the same.
I love the Dolphins (always have) but, we're a team of blue-collar, lunch pail toting, journeymen with just a couple of big-time players. Until we get better at the skilled positions, we're gonna hover around the 8-8 mark. We went 7-9 last year, we're 6-6 so far this year. We are who we are. It'll take another year or two of decent drafts and FA to change that. Sure, a few INT's that were actually caught and things coulda been different, a few passes for TD's and we could be 10-2 at this point. But, don't get yer hopes up.

If I were part of this so called brain trust, you can bet your a s s Brandon Marshall would have more than one touch down.

I would find creative ways to get him in the endzone.

Just last night I came up with my best one yet.

Fist and goal inside the 5. I line up Marshall at fullback and Solia at halfback.

Henne takes the snap and hands off to Marshall. Solia picks up Marshall and drags him in for six.

Huh? Henning couldn't come up with stuff like this in a million years!

why not us? tony's got to look in the mirror at himself;he's the main man who's trying to learn how to be a head coach in this league. he is a parcells disciple who won't change his ways. he does the same things over and over expecting different results. we've had several opponents say they knew the plays coming by the formation we were in. those are "tells" veteran teams abstain from. we still don't have an oline;vernon cant move. we cant run the ball. our qb doesnt want to play out of the shotgun because he's not comfortable etc. we use a rb or 2 to max protect henne who cant find a receiver. our qb cant sell playaction because his play fakes are so bad. still cant throw a simple fade to the back corner of the end zone. the list goes on!!!!

Miami has a good defense, but not an opportunistic defense. There's a difference. This defense drops interceptions as if they were boiling hot baked potatoes and doesn't strip and recover fumbles to the point where other teams offenses start playing tight just to avoid the turnover. Turnovers are oftentimes just luck, but the Dolphins lack play makers on defense outside of Cameron Wake's sacking ability. Joe Haden for Cleveland made more impact plays against Miami in one game than both Vontae Davis and Sean Smith have made in the last 6 weeks.

Everyone forgets that Ireland and Sparano got Jake Long and Cameron Wake, we actually have a really great defense. Yes, Henne and Henning are not the answer, but we are getting there. Everyone wants instant these days, oatmeal, fast food, etc...no patience! I Know field goals are really nothing to jump up and down about, but maybe our coach is trying to get the players motivated, Sparano shows more enthusiasm than most of our players, with it were contagious!

Greg Z,

You do realize Sparano doesn't call the plays, right? He let's Henning calls the offence and Nolan call the defence. The ofence is obviously pretty anemic, so there will be changes. To have changed the OC in mid-season would have made no sense. Who them would we have had calling the play? I think Tony recognizes there are problems. Changes will be made and I expect we'll have a better product on the field for next season.

Amazing some want 1 more year to see if there's some kind of magical transformation. To those few that believe this, I would like to ask you why? What do you see that makes you believe next year will be any different under the same regime?

After an embarrasing 24-3 SBV loss to the Dallas Cowboys the 72-73 Dolphins team motto didnt seem to be "why not us." It seemed to be "Why Not Them." As everuy team they played the following season would feel the sting of losing.

Why not us? How about turning that around Fins and say Why not them? Havent you experienced being losers for long enough?

Can't wait for Chad Henne to make a lot of you guys eat your words. Give him a better Oc and a better running game and he'll be a better running back. The problem is when he does become better none of you guys who ran him down will admit you were wrong. It's the same guys who bitched and complained when we didn't draft Brady Quinn and whined about it for months and never admitted they were wrong. The same guys who roasted this organization for not drafting Dez Bryant last year. Well guess what guys....Bryant might have had a nice showing when he played but can this guy stay healthy? A lot of you guys are really quick to criticize but never come clean when you are wrong. How's Brandon Graham working out in Philly these days guys? How about C J Spiller? Where are all the guys who just KNEW these guys were going to be stars and have disappeared. You're gutless!!

the should have read 'a better quarterback'....

Why not us? Dolfans everywhere should be sick of hollow cliches. Remember "Feed The Wolf?"

After nearly starving to death in Miami the Wolf has went back to chasing the 3 Little Piggies. Enough of the hollow cliches, just play some damn real football mental midgets!

Amen brother....it's been all talk and no action from these guys....we're almost as bad as the Jets in that regard.

Soiled..A little John Prine for breakfast, nice.

Armando, I have to disagree that our Defense isn't "playoff caliber". Look at the point totals this year and we have done well. Imagine if we had some sort of running game, and a quarterback that knew how to take care of the ball. They have been put into some difficult spots, and to my eyes have played well. Have we won any of the "turning point in the season" games this year?

Why Not Us? Why dont we just begin with a few more first downs on offense and a few more third down stops on defense and see where that leads us.

Also the next db to drop a sure pick or pick 6 should be made example of in public execution. A db publically drops a ball then we pubically "drop" him, as in "drop dead you bum"!

Any of you guys checking out the Villanova- App State game. This kid Matt Szczur has 3 tds rushing 1 passing. He looks like Wes Welker but faster, and bigger. He crushed the Griz in the second half of the Championship Game last year and I hated him for it. But this kid can PLAY. If this kid is around in the 4th or 5th round he would be a steal. Remember his name, because he will be in the Senior Bowl this year.

Stephen Ross himself had apirations of playing for the "Lombardi" this season, not going to the "Lombardi" play.

The dumbass Parcellian will probably break out the champagne and have the team shower itself in bubbly right there in the theatre house. I wonder how far will they perpetrate this fraud. Will Roger Goodell be there too?

With all of the hollow cliches and gimmicks Im becoming fastly convinced Tony Sparano would make a fantastic "HIGH SCHOOL" head coach. First we have our "pep rally" on Broadway, then the "why not us" rah-rah-rah speech.

Give us a f^cking break already will you!

I'm still waiting. Please tell me why we need to keep this bunch?

How good of a play fake can a guy make on 3rd and lomg? This isn't on Henne, it's on Hennings senility!

How comfortable can you get in the shotgun when you're offensive coordinator calls it about 4 times a season? 3rd and long and if Henning doesn't call a run play, he calls a play action pass. Not only does the defense already know better, they know the routes the receivers are running because of Hennings lack of creativity even in drawing up formations.

Do you really believe Henne came into an NFL rookie camp and told the Trifecta that he's uncomfortable in the shotgun? Parcells would have be-atch slapped him and called him worse things than he called Keyshawn!

Henning made this statement in response to reporters questioning his conservative(retarded) play calls. Henning was on the hotseat and as usually threw the player under the bus.

Henne has his OWN shortcomings, that's obvious. He has a ways to go. But, the cold hard fact is, you can see the decrepid hand of Hennings behind MOST of Henne's struggles.

Everybody wants to pile on Henne, yet he's been consitantly put in ridiculous situations since becoming a Miami Dolphin.

Craig M.. There was only 1 person who was waiving the flag for both Graham, and Spiller. And that was Rob in Oc. But because they haven't workes out yet doesn't mean he was wrong, or an idiot. Spiller can't block, but when he learns how he can still be dynamic. Graham is a rookie that is learning, and on a good team that didn't need him to be a starter this year because of the depth at that spot. If your going to give Henne a pass for being young an undeveloped, you certainly must do the same for 2 rookies.

Guys I fear watching the Lombardi play will be about as close as we'll ever come to a Lombardi as long as this regime is in place.

We're now 13gms into the season and now the big pep rally on Broadway and the rah-rah-rah why not us speech to the team. Reminds me of the old days underneath the bleachers with a dumbass cheerleader! LOL.............

"We're getting off the bus, why not us! We are making no fuss, why not us? A win is a must, why not us! Team.....s-p-i-r-i-t, whys not us!"

Sounds so high schoolish doesnt it?

I guess this what we get with a gm only a few years removed from high school himself! LOL.........

Odin, they won't let Henne audible but they do let him 'check with me'. IMO, Henne doesn't trust his own judgement and that's a bad thing for a NFL QB. Has Sparano hurt his developement? Yes. He's had it drilled into him, do not make a mistake and that's got him playing scared.

Hey, Henne might not have ever made it even with good coaching but with this bunch, we'll never know.

Dan Henning is high school principal at Miami High. He certainly old enough. LOL.........

2007; Record 1-15 (nuff said).
2008; Record 11-5 was mirage that set unrealistic expectations for the future. It was the perfect storm (Weak strength of schedule, Tom Brady’s knee, Jet’s choking, no Dolphin injuries, no turnovers, & Pennington falling out of the sky). For conversations sake, consider the following: What if Pennington had not signed with the Phins? McCown would have started we probably would have finished 5-11 instead.
2009; Record 7-9 (Strengths: Dominant running attack & chew the clock. Weakness: Limited offense, Team not built to come from behind, Defensive meltdowns, & Lots of injuries). Sporano’s first cover your arse move. D- Coordinator is fired.
2010; Record Prediction 8-8 (Defense has 5 new starters and new D-Coordinator. An impressive turnaround and playing lights out D. Multiple Special Teams disasters. ST- Coordinator is fired. Sporano’s second cover your arse move. Offense has digressed. Suspect play calling, lack of execution, no run game, non-cohesive O-line, and inconsistent QB play). Ross will keep Sporano another year. Sporano will fire the O-coordinator.
2011; Look for an Offensive overhaul. Expect to see a new C, LG, RG, & RB. They will bring another QB to compete for the starting position. Phins must make playoffs or Sporano and Ireland are gone for 2012 season. Sporano will have no one else to blame but himself.

If OC is fired as I suspect he will, coaches from all three facets of the team will have been replaced within 3 years. What does that say about the Big Tuna’s choices of assembling a coaching staff? I do see overall progress consider where we were at in 2007. But it’s not spectacular.

I'm not convinced we should can Sporano. I can say for the first time, I have seriously started to think about it.

Henning should have never been brought back from being fired the last time. Retirement my a s s. A spade is a spade, call it like it is. Dan Henning, you didn't retire you maggot, you were FIRED!!!!

As far as your questionh Cocoa, last year we brought in a new DC and drafted almost all defense. It has worked out real well so far. I'm hoping the same thing happens with the offense this off season.

If were as sucessfull at upgarding the O as we were the D last year we'll be competing for the playoffs for years to come.

Here's to another off season of hopes and dreams!

Guys, the Miami Dolphins are the #1 high school football team in the nation. Jeff Ireland is so proud of himself! LOL..........

Jeff Ireland is so proud himself for building a high school team that can compete on a professional level.

You guys thinking Im being overly harsh and critical but examine the evidence to see for yourselves!

The Miami Dolphins are now a college recruiter's dream. Thanks Jeff Ireland!

We are now a NCAA rules violation just waiting to happen for some under handed division one collegiate program! LOL..................

Dying, got one better than that. Henning thought that they were going to see Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadian orchestra last night.

I wonder if Michigan would offer Chad Henne a scholarship now after playing for the #1 high school(Dolphins) team in all the land?

I'm trying to be serious for once.

BUT, as usual, Your posts are triggering my ADHD and I'm ROTFLMAO!!!!

Another what if:
In 2007 Tuna takes the Falcon's job instead of the Phins. Falcons do not draft Matt Ryan, and Falcons are not 10-2 today.

Maybe under a different rigime Phins would have drafted Ryan, and the Phins would now be on that head bobbing school bus commercial.

Maybe thats why our db's drop so many picks and pick 6's. Theyre still developing that skill at the high school level. LOL.........

Cocoajoe, Odin... All quarterbacks have to be able to check out of plays. Even high school QB's have this option. If the only check system is a check with me. This is a total inditement of Henne. Is he that dumb that he is the only professional quarterback in the history of the league that isn't allowed to audible? The only play that stuck out to me in the Tyler Thigpen game(V. the Bears) was the pass to Hartline where he checked out of the run, and hit him on the sideline for a big gainer. Sad that this is the offensive highlight for me from that game. If Henne cannot be trusted to audible. This goes along way in confirming my thought that he is the reason the offense is so Vanilla. This would tell me the coaches don't trust him with the whole offense. Well it is time to cut those chains. How much more can He blow it?

I bet Henning dreams about eating chocolate pudding and wakes up with a spoon in his butt ! Ireland's spoon...

"We're getting off the bus, why not us! We're making no fuss, why not us! A win is a must, why not us! Goo0.... t-e-a-m-s-p-i-r-i-t!

Why not us.........yay..............!"

That explains how so many of our alumni keeps ending up in places like New England, New York and Buffalo!

Darryl Dunphy,

I dont know. You say even high school qb's can check out of plays....but is difficult to say when Dan Henning is school principal.

We always send them packing come graduation time. LOL...............

Great Cocoa's joinig in.

Man I would give anything to see the look on Hennings face when he relized Guy Lombardo wasn't going to make an appearence-

I want to get this straight. Henne has to check with Grandpa before he can check out of plays???? If this is fact, this is insane! Doesn't the radio contact in thise helmets get cut off after 30 seconds? So Henne gets stuck in a play and that is it? This makes no sense. Can someone explain this to me.

An AFC East Coaches Comparison:

Sparano: Full of slogans with nothing to back it up with. Great sideline cheerleader for the cameras.
Ryan: Tough talking, obnoxious narcissist who's setting himself up for another humble pie in the face.
Bellichick: Quiet, unemotional, brutal competitor who does all his trash talking on the field.

I'm sick of envying the Pats.

"We're getting off the bus, why not us! We're making no fuss, why not us! A win is a must, why not us! Gooo.... t-e-a-m-s-p-i-r-i-t!

Why not us.........yay..............!"

Odin, of all of them, liked Sparano the best. Green HC but showed real desire and there's nothing without it. Year one, it was all Parcells and that was fine, he needed the help. Year two, more of the same and you got to give him a pass, he's still learning. Year three, Parcells gone and you think, it's time for him to break out....put his stamp on this team. I was hoping to see him finally be the HC.

But slowly it started to sink in, he was chosen by Parcells because of the same mindset. Unless and until he can understand the game has changed, he'll be the bigger is better, keep the game close type coach. I still like Sparano but I believe he missed an opportunity this year and it maybe his last with this team.
