You know, I'm going to try to remain composed here as I share with you today's latest slap in the face move against the Miami Dolphins that, unless handled correctly, has the potential to be quite embarrassing and make the organization look like a convention of clowns.
Earlier today, several media outlets, including The Worldwide Leader in media platforms reported that San Francisco 49ers president Jed York intends to contact Dolphins consultant Bill Parcells and ask for advice as that team conducts a general manager search.
Let that marinate for a second ...
So, basically, the head of a competing organization intends to call a person whom the Dolphins pay approximately $4 million per year to consult for Miami and ask him to consult for San Francisco for free, with no benefit to Miami.
Really?
What are the Dolphins? The court jesters of the NFL?
The Dolphins pay Parcells and he would gift advice to one of Miami's 32 competitors?
The nerve.
It is insulting to the Dolphins. It is galling that the 49ers think they can do this with a Miami employee any more than they can, say, Bill Belichick or A.J. Smith or the man running any other NFL outpost. And the bothersome thing is folks around the league think this is perfectly acceptable.
Remember last year when the Jets made the playoffs and Rex Ryan said he was going to contact Parcells for advice on how to handle the playoffs? The Jets, for goodness sake! The *&%?=#@$ Jets!
Thankfully, in that instance, Parcells put the kibosh on the whole deal by graciously declining to become involved. The hope here is he does the same thing this time around, regardless his relationship with York.
Otherwise, it makes the Dolphins look like a bunch of incompetent foofs who wrote themselve terrible contract terms with Parcells and now still pay him while other teams use him.
We all know Parcells is no longer involved in the day-to-day operations of the Dolphins. He doesn't really watch practice film any more. He isn't calling GM Jeff Ireland every day, advising him on what moves to make next so that this disappointing season can be salvaged next season. I get that. We all have to accept that.
But to get paid by the Dolphins and give his future Hall of Fame opinion to someone else in the NFL? That's a slap.
Let it be known that Parcells is not parsimonious with his opinion. He called University of Miami athletic director Kirby Holcutt during Miami's coach search and gave a resounding endorsement of Al Golden. Parcells loves Golden's work ethic, thinks the young coach can recruit, and comes from great stock.
But UM isn't competing with the Dolphins for players or victories. The 49ers are a different matter.
Yes, Parcells has a sweetheart contract. He is reportedly being paid and can continue to be paid next year even if he walks away from the Dolphins and goes to work for some other team. But guess what? He hasn't chosen to go work for another team at this particular point in time.
That pretty much makes him a Dolphins employee -- albeit as a consultant -- until such time that he decides to go elsewhere.
And so I propose this: If York insists on making that call, the Dolphins should file a tampering charge against the 49ers. I have no idea if they could make it stick. But I do know the move would send a loud and chilling message to the rest of the league that Parcells is Dolphins property and he is not to be contacted without permission.
There is, of course, one exception to what I propose: If Parcells promises to advise York to trade his first round pick for, say, the quarterback the 49ers so desperately need, then go ahead Big Tuna, give the San Franciscos your two cents.
If Parcells can convince York to take Chad Henne for a first-round pick, then the conversation is worthwhile to the Dolphins. Otherwise, this conversation should never really get beyond, "Thank you," Jed, "but no thank you. I'm under contract to the Miami Dolphins."
That's really the only two ways the Dolphins don't come out looking ridiculous in this instance.
[UPDATE: 760-AM radio reporter Ken LaVicka, who asks tougher questions than most on the Dolphins beat, asked coach Tony Sparano about the topic just now. Sparano confirmed Parcells is still an employee of the Dolphins but declined to comment further.]
[UPDATE 2: An NFL source tells me there has been to this moment no contact between York and Parcells. Another source close to Parcells -- well, sort of close -- tells me Parcells has not ruled out speaking with York but will tread carefully. According to the source, Parcells believes York wants more of a handle on GM candidate Trent Baalke, who Parcells hired in 1998 to be a scout for the New York Jets. Parcells won't let the conversation seep into advice going forward that might give the 49ers an edge of the Dolphins, the source said. Makes sense.]

I'm not mad at Parcells, he's just doing him. The person who SHOULD'VE had Miami's best interests at heart was Wayne Huzienga. How do you give Parcells such a sweetheart deal? And how do you NOT say, "ok, Bill, if I sell the team, we'll still pay you through your contract, but there's this STIPULATION here that forbids you to work with any other team while you're getting paid by Miami." That should have been a simple line in the contract. If it wasn't put in, SHAME ON HUZIENGA, and SHAME ON MIAMI!!!

In true post-holiday spirit,
Mr. Parcells, we want our money back.
Posted by: fansince72 | December 29, 2010 at 03:19 PM
Ih henne stays another year, the man better be COMPETING against another QB (weather young or veteran like) to REALLY earn the right to stay a starting QB here, cuz right now we dont have one on the roster to push him into desperation mode.
Posted by: superPHIN | December 29, 2010 at 03:19 PM
Zach Thomas was the first in the film room and the last out for 10 years. I'm sure he knows EVERYTHING about DEFENSE ya freakin' idi0t

NOLAN WAS FIRED AT SF WHY WE WANT HIM FOR COACH. MAKES NO SENCE HE IS A DC NOT HC HE PROVED THAT.
Posted by: Shoe | December 29, 2010 at 03:21 PM
There's about 20 other QB's I'd rather see under center, including McNabb

MACNABB CAN WORK AS DEFENSE LINEMAN
Posted by: ALoco | December 29, 2010 at 03:23 PM
Bill Belichick was fired from Clevland...What a flawed argument
I personally don't care about NOLAN for HC.
He can't be worse than Sparano
I would love to have THOMAS as a DC though!
Posted by: Marc | December 29, 2010 at 03:23 PM
ALOCO...Please don't even talk to me. You're the biggest idiot I've ever seen on here. Wanna complain about how little Henne makes?
Guy's horrible
Posted by: Marc | December 29, 2010 at 03:25 PM
Aloco, give the Nolan defense in San Fran a rest. You continue to make yourself look like an as*.
Look at what he's done in his last 2 stints as a D coordinator. Live in the now bud. Maybe, JUST MAYBE, it was the team and not the coach? How could we expect you to think logically for a change!
Based on what he did in Denver & what he did in Miami this year, it's pretty obvious it was the team & not the coach.
Also, please post under 1 name. Multiple names are for children.

Well, as a matter of fact
YES!
The Dolphins Suck
Period
Now go out and play in the chemclouds!

Z Thomas WILL BE a DC one day. That's why he wouldn't share his notebook with Crowder
Posted by: Marc | December 29, 2010 at 03:27 PM
ALoco, what did that 4mil a year get you for that legend? A turnaround year, great (that was worth 4mil). And then 2 sub-.500 seasons. Looks like the Falcons (who were also in the Parcells hunt) won out. They passed, took someone who knows TODAY'S TALENT from NE, and have gone to the Playoffs 2 out of the last 3 years (including this year).
The point isn't the money, it's having SOLE PROPRIETORSHIP of Parcells' services.
Posted by: DC Dolfan | December 29, 2010 at 03:28 PM
ITS TRUE HENNE MAKE SO MUCH LESS HOW IS IT FARE DO YOU SEE OHTER QB SALARY? HENNE NEEDS BETTER CONTRACT AND ONE YEAR MORE FOR SEE MAYBE HE CAN BE GOOD AND WE DONT WASTE PICK NOW. SEEMS SIMPLE THIS WAY. AND NEW OC.

People get to high on coordinators when they have success at their one true strength in a team and when they fail it becomes easier to second guess but Nolan wasnt cutting it as head coach in san fran, cam moron Certianly didnt equate to anything of a head coach at all here in miami after having succuess with san diegos offense, and sparano just cant seem to have the handle of Leadership and toughness to make this team truly competition for a SB run, he allows strings to be pulled by higher powers and like someone said, he is a poor gameday planning coach.
Posted by: superPHIN | December 29, 2010 at 03:30 PM
How much more do you need to see to know that Henne sucks?
Watch ANY OTHER NFL team and their QB's...They are light years ahead of Henne who was a four year starter in college, and has started almost 2 years in the NFL now...
Posted by: Marc | December 29, 2010 at 03:30 PM
Let Bill Parcells take his special "BSB" type of football out to the bay area. Yeah, 49ers fans who remember the Montana and Young days will love that "big, slow and boring" football. He'll make the 49ers into the Dolphins of the west coast. Big, slow and boring with a 7 and 9 record. Congrats Bill you really know how to take a bad team and make it mediocre.

From the latest SI power rankings, Dolphins #18:
My favorite statistic of the 2010 NFL season? The Lions won more games in the state of Florida this year (two) than did the Miami Dolphins (one), the state's 45-year-old flagship franchise. I don't see how Dolphins owner Stephen Ross goes status quo into this offseason. Something significant needs changing in Miami, where the Dolphins have regressed in each of the past two years after going 11-5 with a soft schedule in 2008.
Posted by: Joe Schmoe | December 29, 2010 at 03:32 PM
Fact is Nolan's the only comprhensible coach we have. His interviews are actually refreshing compared to dumb and dumber
Sparano would be good as a quality control coach. He keeps track of snal counts like no other...That's what he's good at
Posted by: Marc | December 29, 2010 at 03:34 PM
sjbites,
cruel but very true, parcells defines *BORING* to watch play the game of football, besides he would just build up their O-Line all of next draft anyway, it was said earlier, the man likes to think inside the BOX.
Posted by: superPHIN | December 29, 2010 at 03:36 PM
PARCELLS IS JUST A NAME...Nothing more
His "discliples" are just around because they're tied to his name...
It's like politics
Name recognition...

"However, in Henne's eight second-half cracks at the two-minute offense, the Dolphins have thrown five interceptions (three in their own territory) and run out of time on the other three occasions.
Zero points. Zero late comebacks.
"

#18 seems awfully high?
Posted by: The Seer | December 29, 2010 at 03:43 PM
I wonder if Good old bailin bill was coaching this team right now on the sidelines if he would have indeed stuck with henne all year or kept henning calling plays on offense......His rep would say No therefore his ego would take over.
Posted by: superPHIN | December 29, 2010 at 03:43 PM
Henne sucks, why? Well, he's inaccurate, he's immobile, etc.....
So, who do you want to bring in? McNABB? LOL! You mean the guy who's inaccurate and immobile and played his entire career in the West Coast offense and is at the very end of his career? THAT McNABB?
Look people, way down there in Miami, McNabb might look good. But with my vantage point, 20 minutes away from FedEx Field, listening on the radio EVERYDAY, watching the local sports news, EVERYDAY, I can guarantee that bringing McNabb here would spell even FURTHER disaster to this team.
Orton, Palmer, Kolb and almost anyone else with a pulse would be a better choice than McNabb. Hell, I'd rather draft a walk-on than see McNabb overthrowing Fasano all day.
McNabb is DONE! Get it through your thick skulls.

All the talk bout Henne
and Home still sees Henne starting next season for the Fins
Actually think Henne gets better
There is no one else in our trading range or in FA
KEEP IT REAL
Henne will get better
and 1 WR + TE did slip and that is what caused the INTs
Now the play calling when up by 10 points w 5 min left
Leaves a lot to be desired
In that case would have been better of running the clock out w the Wildcrap
... Just Saying
Posted by: Home | December 29, 2010 at 03:44 PM
Being a good player is NO QUALIFICATION WHATSOEVER for being a good coach. There never has been a connection between the two and never will.
Anyone remember Dwight Spephenson trying to be an OL coach with the Dolphins years ago? Couldn't cut it. How about Bart Starr with the Packers? Terrible.
It's one the most astoundingly stupid things fans believe, yet they repeat it year after year.
In reality, some of the best NFL coaches never played the pro game at all or where thoroughly mediocre during their career (like Shula).
Brilliance on the field means absolutely NOTHING in relation to coaching ability.
Posted by: jim | December 29, 2010 at 03:44 PM

Doesn't make sense (I meant hire the services of..). Better.
kris, let's hear it. You're close enough in Baltimore to hear the word on McNabb. What do you think?

MCNAB IS REAL VETERAN. HE CAN TUTUR HENNE THEN WE HAVE STARTER AND BACKUP. WHY IS EVERYTHING THEY SAY HENNE FAULT?
Posted by: Shoe | December 29, 2010 at 03:47 PM
nh,
I'll take the 25-1 odd bet with henne being the starter. So I bet 10 bucks and if he is I win 250? Where do I send the check for 10?

Marc, i see palmer ,hasselback, macnabb.orton, smith .....they all suck w/record much worst than my hero henne.

What I find downright hilarious is that people are pointing to disciples of the man we know as Tuna, as winning Superbowls in recent times. Peyton, Coughlin & Bellicheck.
What people fail to realize is that all of those coaches have evolved WITH the nfl, not against it like Sparano, Henning & Parcells. They ALL realized you need to create big plays in the passing game. They assembled teams with explosive capabilities.
Essentially the Saints run as a diversion most times. The Pats run to rest Brady's arm. The Giants can run, but when healthy, they are a DYNAMIC passing offense.
So, it's true Tuna's disciples have had success, but, unlike the coaching staff in Miami, they also learned they had to adapt with the current NFL. That's why these guys need to go.

The guy KNOWS defense
PLEASE STOP BRINGING UP THE WR and TE ISSUES
UNLESS
You're going to bring up the fact that DB's and LB's were jumping routes all day long and SHOULD HAVE had about 6 INTS! Including the sole TD pass!

Does everyone realize that Parcells NEVER coached the Miami Dolphins? He took a more cush GM position and brought in friends. Parcells was not on the sideline once running the show for the fins. Sparano really has been the HC. Point is, can't really compare his time here to his time as coach on other teams. No way he would have run the same sideline circus that TS flounders around with.

The list of great players who couldn't coach worth a dime is endless.
Some fans believe that ability transcends but the reality is that they're two ENTIRELY different jobs.
Cripes, remember when people were floating the idea of having Marino as a QB coach? (as if he'd give up the cushy tv money, anyway). Even DAN admitted he didn't have the right temperment for the job.
To repeat: There is ZERO correlation between ability to play and ability to coach. And it can be PROVEN endlessly.

No its not all HENNES fualt, it always seems to be someone elses fualt, the play was misread, the reciever slipped when the ball came out, mis-communication in the huddle, QB-WR werent on the same page,it was just a bad decision, ive heard this all damn year from him and this offense, from week one of training camp to now going into week 17 of the season finale....Henne has masked this entire offense under the mold of the coaching staff like sparano and dead henning* We just lack speed, plays, players,ect.....when is it anybodys fualt but the people who are put in charge of it.....
Posted by: superPHIN | December 29, 2010 at 03:56 PM
Marc, what would you want to see happen with the coaching staff after the season?
Posted by: Joe Schmoe | December 29, 2010 at 03:57 PM
Work ethic and dedication are great attributes, but a 3rd-string CB who had a one year pro career (or never made it at all) could have those SAME qualities in abundance...but without the talent to sustain a football career with it.
Didn't Dwight Stephenson possess those qualities? Bart Starr? Where did it get them as coaches?
Nowhere.
Not saying a great player CAN'T be a great coach, only that there's zero relationship between the two.
Zach Thomas as a COORDINATOR?? How about he starts as a low-level assistant like any other coach. To suggest he could just jump into a job he's never done is borderline ludicrous.
Posted by: jim | December 29, 2010 at 04:01 PM
