Ireland's words about Chad Henne not an endorsement for him being the Dolphins starter

Calm down. Breathe.

I'm sure by now you've seen the tweets and the hyperventilating online headline, "GM: Henne could remain starter," and gone into something of a panic thinking the same Dolphins that are promising all this change will come back in 2011 with the same quarterback they lined up and failed with the past two seasons -- Chad Henne.

And now you're freaking.

Well, calm down. Breathe.

The Dolphins are not blind. They saw the season unfold as you did. They know Chad Henne was the fourth-best quarterback in the AFC East last season -- which wouldn't be so bad if the AFC East didn't have only four teams.

They saw the frustrating miscues. The ball to a wide open Kevin Curtis that sailed 10 yards over his head. The pass to a wide open Anthony Fasano in the Baltimore game in the end zone just prior to halftime that sailed way over his head. The pass to Brandon Marshall in the opener that was so short, Marshall had to stop and wait for it to come down. The deep pass to Brandon Marshall in the second game at Minnesota on the same play that was, again, underthrown and forced Marshall to slow down for it. The deep pass to an open and streaking Brian Hartline down the sideline in the first New England game that, again, was too far out there. I'm pretty sure there was another such overthrown pass to Hartline in another game, but I don't have the time to go through all the play-by-plays right now. You get the point.

The Dolphins saw the batted passes, after batted passes, after batted passes that killed downs and sometimes drives. They saw the 19 interceptions that overshadowed the 15 TD passes.

Guys, this is a team that benched Henne and made him share snaps in the season finale. The Dolphins know what's up.

So don't get your hackles up over a news site headline that tells you Henne could remain the starter, while leaving out that important detail that he also might not remain the starter.

I've told you since the season ended that Miami's plan is to keep Henne, for now, and work with him and try to squeeze whatever ability he has to see if that ability adds up to him being a good starting quarterback. This is not news.

It was not news when GM Jeff Ireland told reporters in Mobile for the Senior Bowl:

"He's shown some aggressive tendencies, he's shown some exciting throws. He's got all the ability in the world. We've just got to put a plan together and an offensive philosophy that fits Chad Henne, and I think we'll do that."

Of course they'll do that. Henne is the only quarterback on the team right now! They have no choice right now.

But you know what they Dolphins will also do? They'll try to find a quarterback to replace Henne. If you ask me, that should have been the headline, although that is not exactly news, either. You've known all along the Dolphins will be quarterback shopping this offseason.

And Ireland admitted as much.

”We’ll evaluate what’s out there like we do every position in free agency and the draft," Ireland said.

The only reason a team is evaluating the talent at the position is to add talent at that position. You think the Dolphins are evaluating top-tier talent at left tackle?

The headline could just as easily have been: "Dolphins to evaluate new quarterback talent." And that headline wouldn't have been news, either.

The facts are whatever Ireland said Tuesday can and probably will change three times before the 2011 season begins. You remember last year when he said the team was confident Gibril Wilson, terrible his first season in Miami, would play much better his second season? Everyone took that to mean Wilson would be on the Dolphins. He was cut a few weeks later.

Also, how smart would it be for Ireland to come out today and say, "We really, really need a quarterback so we're going shopping."

That would have been poor business because it signals the Dolphins are shopping thus are probably desperate for help. That would weaken the Dolphins. And in the NFL, the weak get eaten. So, of course, the GM's mentioned looking everywhere else for a QB as something of an afterthought.

Henne is in the plan right now, folks.

And the plan is to work with him until it is time to give up on him. Nobody knows when give up time is. But the plan is also to go out and find a possible replacement and probably two -- one for the short term, one for the long term. The plan is let everyone compete for a starting job in 2011.

The plan is to start the best quarterback on the team in 2011.

Sure, that might be Henne.

And it might not.

That other overthrow to Hartline was against the browns and it ended up as an INT.

JC, Breese beat out a rookie Rivers. But good point nonetheless

darillo,

I didn't say Henne will be another Brees. What I said is there is evidence that a QB can improve from twp mediocre first seasons in the league and the original argument was that coaching can also have an impact on a players development.

prrrtttt!!!!...some of you guys are really telling mefor example, that those 2 STUPID int´s he threw in the final 3 min of 2 different games, when we need just a first down to win those games are a BAD COACHING problem??? no, no and no... after 20+ games as starter and 3 years in this league, i can tell you HENNE IS A JOURNEY MAN AS QB, HE IS NOT BREES, HE WILL NEVER BE BRESS, AND WE NEED TO KEEP LOOKING FOR A NEW QB OR GET A SUPER "D" LIKE RAVEN´S OR STEELEERS if we want to be in playoffs

He was not fourth best his qb rating is better then sanchezes

and everybody is talking about using 1 st and 3rd picks on offense... com'on i think we just need another olb ( a real good one) and cb or safety to get it done.... odrick is back, starks is a probowler, soliail is getting better, wake looks for real, vontae is learning and we have a good def. cord.... lets get the killer Bssss back!!!! or something like that...

Henne should be released. He is not the answer.

Sagneul, Koa Misi was selected to the Pro Football Weekly/Pro Football Writers of America All rookie team. He had a very strong year as a complete linebacker.

he is just trying to give other teams that might be interested in trading for him a slight reason to maybe misbelieve what we all saw as u said this season. I think it is possible a team more desperate than us might forfeit a 3rd rd pick or player for him... I think Chad knows his days are numbered in Miami and he has earned that

Armando, Who do you like at QB out of the ones available in the draft/ FA...? If you had to pick one and why

way to repeat the same thing over and over in every paragraph....do some editing dude.

I really like the way u write Armando!! Dont listen to them! Keep up the great work '

I hope they trade Henne and he goes on to win the SB with some other team.

Mando! Glad you're back amongst the living again. We were afraid you'd gone into the witness protection program or something.
Would love to see us draft a good young QB (Cam Newton, etc.) and pick up a good vet (Orten, VY, etc.)But the biggest thing that I hope for is that the Dolphins lighten up and have some fun! It is a game after all. The teams that do that tend to have some success. (See Sexy Exy's bunch up north, or Bella-cheat).
As for Henne, hopeful that Daboll takes off the shackles, handcuffs, whatever that made himregress. I know that it's got to be hard running a vanilla offence where everyone knows the play before the huddle breaks. And, then trying to do what the coach tells you even if you know you're putting a square peg in a round hole. Sophmore jitters are over now, he knows the playbook, he knows some of the weapons at his disposal. Time for the game to slow down for him a little, so he can concentrate on making the plays, not running for his life, or waiting for the check-down to clear.
Would love for us to put it together this year. And, I think we can! We're not that far off. We bea Green Bay and lost to the Steelers by one point! It is do-able, people! Go Fins!

Great mando, I'm not a hater, but I told you in preseaon that henne wasn't the man, and that odrick wouldn't be back in two weeks after his injury! Btw, did odrick ever come back, or did henne ever win a critical game?
Anyway, we can agree on the fact that the dolphins need help at GM, coaching and talent...,,that's a big ball of wax, ain't it?

0x80 and Craig M,

I lived down in SD at the time as well. You guys are both right when you blend both of your arguements. They were shaky on Brees. Brees was not thought of as badly as Henne in my opinion. The Bolts didn't draft Rivers, they drafted Eli Manning...then traded for Rivers from Giants in a rape I thought. I like Rivers better out of college.

The proverbial light did go on for Bress after they picked Rivers. His play was such that the Chargers kept Rivers on the bench longer than they wanted. The freak accident created a convenient way for the Bolts to let Brees go and play their highly drafted guy. Brees had a similar injury to Pennington with the labrum. The Fins and many others thought that Brees would be another Pennington (copy cat league).

Saban got to Brees first and would have nabbed him but med staff said his arm may never come back. The rest as they say...

I would never go so far as to say coaching and scheme mean little or nothing but, I am on the "good players get it and make things happen" side way more often then not.

There are more than a couple folks on the blog that make mad excuses for Henne's faults and lay those faults squarely on sorry coaching. I have a hard time giving coaching that much credit. I believe I have seen enough over thrown balls, skipped balls, looking at the pass rush sacks, lack of awareness letting the DEF jump completely offsides and then get reset with no snap, staring down a receiver, That CRAZY throw to a wide open Fasano before half vs Balt still haunts me. That was a shot put dud!

I always thought oh boy, if Henne comes in for Penny then Tedd Ginn and the deep ball will be a knock out. Hell, Pat White's inc pass to Ted Ginn was closer than most of Henne's deep passes to all receivers. I thought well, we lack weapons... enter BM... enter he doesn't get his 100 catches despite doing it with 3 different QBs in Denver 3 years running.

Coaching and scheme can be blamed but not as many times as plain execution in my humble opinion.

Henne will be on the team in 2011. I would imagine the Fins sign a vet and draft a guy. I like Orton first, VY 2nd and Flynn 3rd.

I think QB Colin Kaepernick has loads of workable talent and should be the mid round QB the fins draft.

Let them all fight it out and may the best QB win!

Craig M and 0x80... declare the debate a tie?

Cheers,

Too many issues all at once from top down. 2011 is a wash year. Zero expectations. 2012 they could be back on track if they can attract a coach with a clue. It took them 3 years to decide oh we want an exciting offense? Genius.

rob in oc,
go back to sleep

Hey Rob, just by chance swinging by here early today. You have a good way of being even tempered with your agreements/disagreements. I'm not so sure you are saying anything much different than me, other than perhaps I was not as clear on the coaching side of things because that wasn't my focus. Sure, coaching can help, a second year player can get better, but like you, I put way more of the emphasis on the player than the coaches. Saying Hennes problem was mostly the QB coach or OC's fault is just a bit of a stretch for me. I can not remember anyone saying Brees needed a proper coach or needed to be fixed. I've heard that Brees comparison one too many times, and personally just didn't think it was an accurate comparison to keep throwing around. Anyway, good comments...I'm fine with accepting the arguments as you made them a tie :)

zorin is really 0x80. I accidentally started typing in a signon here instead of another page and didn't change it afterwards. Cheers. 0x80

Just get better at the rb position. We need speed out of the backfield. There are really no qb's worth taking risks on anyway. Don't trade away the future for a might be.
An Adrian Peterson type player would be a game changer for everyone on the team, including Robo-Henne.
Add a couple of good run blocking lineman and we are on the way.
Besides, everyone that has trade bait thinks that the Phins are going to give up the farm.
Winning teams win with tweaks here and there.

the RB position is not what killed the run game it was the lack of any run blocking from the interior line. I didn't see a single hole all season broken from the middle

YEAH CHAD YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!

This may sound stupid but at this point our special teams could use anything ti spark them. I was ready an article on Fo sports and they have an article about Hershal Walker claiming he's in the best shape of his life, better football shape than when he was in his 20s he says.......why don't we give this guy a serious offer and look to just return kicks and punts? i mean whats he going to hurt? he doesnt keep up u cut him right?

Armando, so what else is new? Henne will never be a starting QB in the NFL. He is to slow with his feet and gets nervous when it counts. There are some things that people can not be taught. Henne is Parcells mistake and Big Bill is gone. The Dolphins are lucky to have ego maniac Bill Parcells gone. Now they can work on getting some skill players on offense without the old school Parcells.

Do you think maybe Sanchez who has the same stats as Henne is better because they tell him he's doing okay and that he can just throw and not have to worry about turnovers(which will happen regardless). If you were told over and over don't turn it over and you might be replaced wouldnt you become more conservative?? Our team is a product of a coach that is conservative and never saying were gonna win but just easy going and that's how we play. Rex Ryan always says were gonna win, our team is great, sanchez your doing fine and we believe in you!! Our coach changes qb's and we will see never heard a were gonna win comment yet!! We nee more optimism on our team!! If you think your middle of the pack thats where your gonna be!! Coaching is Everything,, Don't like the Jets,, but,, Love there attitude!!

THE FINS NEED TO DRAFT A NEW FAN BASE.

HIT FREE AGENCY AND GET BETTER REPORTERS.

CHAD'S FAULT

IT WAS CHAD'S FAULT THE REFS DIDN'T GIVE US THAT CALL VS PITT.

MATTER OF FACT IT WAS HIS FAULT THAT PITT MARCHED DOWN THE FIELD.

IT WAS ALSO HIS FAULT ON THOSE MISSED TACKELS AGINST NEW ENGLAND ON SPECIAL TEAMS.

IT WAS HIS FAULT WHEN HE DIDN'T BLOCK THE SPECIAL TEAMS FROM BLOCKING ALL THOSE PUNTS.

WHAT ABOUT ALL THOSE TIMES WHEN HE DROP THAT PICK 6 THAT COULD HAVE WON A FEW GAMES

OH YEAH WHAT ABOUT WHEN HE MISSED 4 FIELD GOALS IN THE SAME GAME.

ARMANDO:

THE NUMBER 9 PASSING TEAM IN THE LEAGUE.

HOLD UP OUT OF 32 TEAMS THERE'S 8 BETTER THAN WE WERE PASSING THE BALL.

THEY ARE GETTING BETTER AND YOU WANT TO MESS IT UP.

THAT'S WHY WE NEVER GET ANYWHERE.

OH AND FOR THE PLAYOFF TEAMS.

GREEN BAY HE BEAT.

PITT STOLE ONE.

HE BEAT THE JETS.

OH AND THE BEARS WAS ALL HIS FAULT BECAUSE THEY JUST PUSHED HIM AROUND ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL.

Ok Mando, you hate Chad Henne, got it loud and clear. But I really think you're fishing for less by wholesale annual changes in coaching (which we luckily avoided) and quarterbacks. Give the kid a chance with an O.C. who will take the chains off and a healthy offensive line whose best player can use both his arms. Anything else is starting over - and my cardiologist has forbidden me to go through 1-15 again.

How about Costanzo then move Vernon Carey inside?

I HATE THE JETS BUT I LOVE THEIR SWAGGER.

THEY WALK AND ACT LIKE FOOTBALL PLAYERS.

REX ACTS LIKE HE'S A FOOTBALL PLAYER.

I WANT TO PLAY FOR HIM.

IT SUCKS LIVING IN JERSEY AND WATCHING THIS STUFF
REX IS REAL AND SAY'S WHAT HE MEANS

WHILE SPARANO ACTS LIKE MOST OF YOU.

JUST TALK TO BE TALKING AND WHILE HE IS SAYING SOMETHING IT MEANS NOTHING.

ASK BOTH WHO WANTS TO WIN NEXT YEAR ANS REX WOULD SAY HE IS.

SPARANO WILL SAY WE WILL DO WHAT WE CAN TO WIN.

REX IS THE TYPE THAT WILL GO INTO HIS ENEMIES

TOWN AND GIVE THEM THE FINGER AND WALK OUT UN

TOUCHED.

THAT'S AN AMERICAN MAN RIGHT THERE.

The fact is no one knows if Hennes light will go on or not and he starts to play balls out.

Personally I don't see it unless his personality changes. There is a reason people call him RoboHenne.

He doesn't show any emotion out there. I know that's good on one front that he doesn't show how scared or stupified he is,

but

he also doesn't bring any emotion to the team to fire them up. How animated are the good QB's out there. They show when their upset and when they're excited. They get their team moving when needed. I never saw that in Henne.

Personally I would very happy if he figures this out, but until then we need to pick up some more QB talent to make a push at upgrading the position.

Dont forget about over throwing a streaking hartline in the 1st play aginst the jets (1st game, when we to 14-0 in the 1st few minutes)

Hey Justin, Henne didn't play in the Bears game!! That was the Thigpen project game.

henne is a fckin loser. if he is starting at the beginning of the season, im not watching. he is obviously pathetic

We're screwed

I'm willing to allow Henne to start and remain all season. That's the ONLY way that we are ever going to get rid of the left over TUNA'a.

I hope we lose all the games which would translate into;

Ireland aka is your mom a prostitute
Soprano aka Rose colored glasses
ALL the coaches that these jokers hired EXCEPT our DC who we keep.

Ross finally hires and gives total control to COWHER and let COWHER bring in what HE needs to make the Dolphins as great of a team as the Steelers were and continue to be.

Lastly, we draft Luck.

By 2013 we will be competitive and it will be lonnnnnnggg lasting.

To all you naysayers on COWHER... Before you bark go take a look at what COWHER accomplished and what the Steelers STILL are enjoying from what COWHER built before retiring.

In Cowher’s 15 seasons, the Steelers captured eight division titles, earned ten postseason playoff berths, played in 21 playoff games, advanced to six AFC Championship games and made two Super Bowl appearances.

He is one of only six coaches in NFL history to claim at least seven division titles. It has become an article of faith among NFL pundits that the Steelers do not have a bad team two years in a row – they have never lost 10 or more games in consecutive years since the 1970 NFL merger. At the conclusion of the 2005 season, the Pittsburgh Steelers had the best record of any team in the National Football League since Cowher was hired as head coach.

Win-Loss Record 149-90-1
Winning % .623
Games 240

The Dolphins will name WR's Coach Karl Dorrell the new QB'S coach. Never coached or played QB in his life but he will be the QB'S coach. Go figure. This team is high on something.

Drew Brees was garbage his first two years in the league. Anyone who says otherwise is full of it. Henne did not play well last year no doubt. But, just to be fair how many dropped balls did he have? How was the O-Line? Other than Long, Carey and maybe Incognito (Who played well towards the end) They were inconsistent and banged up. Either you are a fan or not. If you are not happy, go root for another team. A little more patience please.

Anyone who thinks Chad Henne will become an NFL star is on crack... That or knows absolutely nothing about football...

and what makes you the smart one dolphin fan in montreal ?

Other teams let their young QB's go out there make mistakes and work through them.

The Dolphins tell their young QB's you better NOT make any mistakes.

x,not smarter than anyone...But I do know one thing. All great QB'S have one thing in common...They can hit an open WR. Henne CAN NOT. And I'll take Brandon Marshall's opinion of a QB over any blogger on any web page.

2 things that stand out to me in this post...

1) "We've just got to put a plan together and an offensive philosophy that fits Chad Henne"

basically they force feed Henne Hennings/Lee philosophies, and just coached him up bad. i pointed this out to you Armando during a live blog and your answer was exactly what you stated in this post, high throws/inaccurate arent the coaches. however they mess up this kids head and i think it showed in his play. now i am not saying Henne is all that, but i think w/better coaching, we would have seen better play.

2) Weak get eaten....

this orginaztion has already shown how weak it is to the league, the players... agents... free agents and DOLPHIN FANS! after that circus that was after the season ended they are well on their way to showing how weak they are and at times clueless.

Jeff, Mando just highlighted a BUNCH of times Henne was NOT handcuffed. He was asked to let it fly. He found the open receiver, great. He had time to throw, terrific. The receiver didn't slip, looking good. And then...overthrow, underthrow, batted pass, poor placement, poor accuracy. This wasnt't ONE time, TWO times, it was dozens and dozens of times. THAT'S why a 2nd-year QB is on the brink of being a bust. THAT'S why Ross embarrassed the franchise with him coach hunt.

You guys really need to get off this "it was all the coaches" thing. Yes, coaches weren't helpful at ALL to Henne's progression. Now there are new coaches. We'll see what that does. But there's still the errant passing problem, the leadership problem, the evasive problem, the seeing the defense and field problem, there's still lots and lots of problems.

BUT, that said, Henne's on the team. He gets a shot. He gets to show if he's legit. It's dumb for all of us to debate if Henne should get a shot or not, he WILL. He's signed, he's our only QB, and the CBA will limit FA, so Henne's a Dolphin in 2011.

What we should be debating is will he have "real" competition (i.e. a seasoned vet like Orton, VY, etc. and a GOOD QB prospect) or will he have the fake competition he's had last few years (Thigpen and Pennington). That's the key to finding the right guy at QB.

DC Dolfan, you're wrong. Everytime Henne overthrows or underthrows an open WR, it's because the QB's coach didn't teach him well...LOL!

NY "G"

i agree on Cowher. i dont get why people say he cant win the big one. ok he lost to the Chargers and Pats a couple times in the AFC title game and some other team( think Den) but i wish my team was a reg in the AFC title game and a reg divison winner and plus, this Steeler team still has a lot of Cowher's team.

i would take him in a heart beat!

and F that talk no coach has won w/2 different teams. Shula got there w/2 teams so did Tuna... Holmgrem. past history has nothing to do w/anything in this situtation

Also, to balance my view, I LOVE that Ireland didn't throw Henne under the bus. That's what Shanihan does to his players in the media (and how's that working out). He pretty much lost ALL value for Donovan McNabb by the way he treated him, and also negated any real trade value for Fat Albert.

So, Ireland SHOULD be putting Henne in a positive light. Because, if Henne isn't the starter this year, people will still wonder since he's only had 2 years if he could be a player. If he's not torn down, the team could find some trade value from him.

So all I care to hear from mgmt and the coaches about Henne is "all the talent in the world" and "he can make all the throws." That's music to my ears. Whether those statements are true or not will be evidenced by who's the starter Week 1. If it's not Henne, there might STILL be teams interested in seeing if he could help them.

I guess if Marino or Brady or Peyton had David Lee for a coach, they all would have been awful. Thats what some of you are saying. By the time you get to the NFL, you should be minor tweaking away, not 3 years and counting of tweaking and fixing and blaming the OC.

Rob and DB..great to see more fans on board with Kaepernick! I like this kid better than the first rounders. My fear is that he has a great senior bowl and a great combine and puts himself in the second round.I think the cat is already out of the bag though...this guy can play QB.

shadow, amen brother...

by no means am i saying Henne is all that... but neither was the coaching.

blind leading the blind

Defenses love henne too because hes easy to fool

One thing Henne needs is patience...All I see in Chad Henne is panic.I don't know if this can be taught.

bobbyd you are correct!!!. chad henne is the man, but he was coached so wrong that it looks like its his fault. trust me this kid isnt bad. he was taught to do the wrong things. lol I know it sounds crazy but hennings horrible predictable play calling mixed in with sporanos "lets play not to lose the game" with a touch of david lee "dont throw the ball UNLESS HE is completely open" really isnt a formula to DEVELOP I REAPEAT DEVELOP A QB.

Idiot someone should do a run down of all your crying and whining about Taylor, Sparano, and everyone else under the sun! The reason Henne will get a shot is simple. He showed a ton of promise as a rookie in camp, he showed a lot of promise his first year as a starter. Obiously he was horrible last year. So the team needs to find out if it was a sophmore slump, coaching, or was his first year a fluke. Simple. If he was horrible his first year, he would be gone! But they do no know which Henne he is yet.

"The Bolts didn't draft Rivers, they drafted Eli Manning"...
Posted by Rob in OC...

Thanks...thats what I thought but I was to lazy to look it up.....Eli also got a ring first.....the Chargers can'r br happy about that.

Very Very Dissappointed in Armando.

You failed to give the proper recognition to the best Left Tackle in football, Jake Long.

Jake Long was announced as the Associated Press All Pro Tackle. This isn't the fraud Pro Bowl where guys make it because idiot fans and 4th graders vote for their favorite players.

Armando you have taken time out of your life to write on the chronicles of Jason Taylor the biggest fraud in Miami Dolphins history.

You should be blogging about the fact that the Dolphins got the Jake Long vs Matt Ryan pick right. Jake Long played with a torn shoulder muscle for most of the year and started off with a high ankle sprain and still made the Associated Press's All Pro Team.

Well Jake Long thanks for being a pro's pro and for being the best Left Tackle in football on a team with little offensive talent.

I'm still pounding the drum for a legitimate TE.If Henne is gonna start next season then I believe he will need a "beast" of a TE to check down to.
