Dan Henning takes another step in his career

It has been a week of breathless anticipation by fans and participants alike, as folks have been waiting to see what goes down with the Dolphins head coach job. And in the midst of offers to Bill Cowher and talks with Jon Gruden and talks with Jim Harbaugh and more talks with Harbaugh, we have overlooked the other news.

Dan Henning has left the Dolphins.

Henning, the offensive coordinator in Miami the last three seasons, agreed with coach Tony Sparano that it would be best to part ways, a source close to Henning said Thursday night.

It is not clear if this is a retirement or simply a parting. Henning, you see, is said to want to take some time to reflect on his current situation, but may remain open to future work if the right opportunity comes along.

Henning has served 31 years in the NFL and five of those with the Dolphins, the last three under Sparano. He was previously the offensive coordinator in Carolina, the New York Jets, Buffalo, and Detroit. He was the head coach in San Diego (1989-91) and Atlanta (1983-86).

Obviously the Dolphins now need to hire an offensive coordinator. But at this hour (check the time stamp on this post) the team has not fired Sparano nor made a contract offer to Harbaugh.

HALELUJAH!!!!!!!!

You gotta be kidding me ! It took these geniuses a week to figure this out ? Sparano could've bought some good will from those of us who think he stinks by doing this monday. Now he looks like a even bigger field goal cheering doof.

Buh BYE!

Thank God! I've been calling for this since 2009 and FINALLY it has happened. Miami has a top 16 offense now because he is gone.

Thank you!!! now Db wont know which routes im running before the snap!

"reflect on his current situation" ???
LOL

Cartwheel Fist Pump!!!!

Nah-nah, nah-na-nah-na, hey-hey-ey....
GET LOST!!!

Thanks for nothing, LOSER!

That wolf didn't hunt.

THANK YOU GOD!!!!!BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNEEEE!!!!!!!Best News of the year thus far mando, keep it coming!!!!

Don't worry Dan. Parcells will find you another gig with San Fran. Go screw up their offense, won't you Poppi!

Wow...this is the smartest play call Henning has made all year.

I'm sure Parcells' phone will be ringing tomorrow....

Good luck. I don't know if it was you Mr Henning but I have a pretty good idea when my wife was calling your plays before you ran them.

Article should have been titled "Dolphins receive offensive boost"

Relief, finally!

Good.now bring sparano and ricky with you.I tell you finatics if we land vince young and a great running back in the draft we will win 10 games.I think this year was the borringest season for offense ever.

Thanks for neutering our offense this year, Dan. You will NOT be missed.

Now that's GREAT news!!

I just don't see how this is an upgrade at all!! And to keep Ireland?? Really? This is Saban 2.0 if I've ever seen it, we'll be in this same situation 3 years from now sadly.

What about Lee? Was he one of the coaches who's packing his stuff?

Funny thing is that with all the circus that is going on right now, and with the Dolphins keeping the idiot Ireland on board, Henning's departure doesn't mean anything right now.
We have bigger things to worry about than celebrating Henning's departure...
What a travesty this thing has become.

IS IT TRUE COWHER HIS CHIN IS COMING OUT AND HIS TEETH GRINDING IN ANGER.

DENNY , THANK YOU FOR THE ROUX

Well if they are in the same situation 3 years later I doubt it would be because of Ireland. He has got to be on a short leash too.

No more prevent offense....hopefully.

THE COLLAGE COACH ALERT....... HE'S HAVING A MEETING WITH STANFORD PRESIDENT ........... COMEDY CENTRAL

It must be hard for Parcells to see all his hard work being dismantled unceremoniously and to see his men being led to the guillotine.

In the immortal words of Nelson: HA-HA!

why did it take sparano 3 yrs. to figure it out? sparano took 2 yrs to realize pasqualoni was bad too??? funny the fans can see it before a coach who makes millions for these inept decisions.

Thanks for nothing Dan.

Now please,go and beg Belichick for a job will ya...

"Obviously the Dolphins now need to hire an offensive coordinator. But at this hour (check the time stamp on this post) the team has not fired Sparano nor made a contract offer to Harbaugh".

Not true and that is pure speculation. They don't have to report what they're doing until it's actually done. No one knows if Tony was already told he was being let go and no one knows if a secret contract offer was made.

Henning, I'm sure you will be in great demand with your phone ringing from all those teams looking for an over the hill OC! LOL! Maybe Harbaugh will be able to keep Nolan and find a good OC and ST coach to return a high level of play from the Offense and special teams, if not we're stuck in mediocrity land for a long while to come! At least he has experience in developing QBs, something that Lee and Henning failed miserably at this year!

This should be the main news for phins fans this week, even if Sparano stays or if Harbaugh comes in, the team will seek for a more agressive OC (as they did with Nolan on Defense), the offense should improve a lot and the equation should be solved, playoffs and /or a winning season.

bobbyd12, when referring to the media calling this embarrassing you're talking about opinion radio and media, not fact. They have their opinions just like the rest of us but the problem is not one of us have the inside track on what's going on. It's an embarrassment why? Because Tony hasn't been fired?

So who in here knows Tony Sparano or Ross personally? Anyone in the media hang out with them and have family get togethers? Point being Ross could have told Tony he was letting him go. Tony could have said I'll stick around until you get a new guy just so I can see my assistants out and finish up some last minute business. Or Ross could have said I need you hear because A. I'm still paying you so you still are employed by the Dolphins or B. I have the president of Michigan U flying in tomorrow and I want you to show him what kind of program you built here so we can try to get you the job.

Ridiculous? Why? Why is it that when people don't have any facts in a matter they IMMEDIATELY assume the worst? Couldn't it be that Ross is doing Tony a favor? I just came up with three scenarios off of the top of my head and cou;ld come up with 50 more in the next 2 minutes. Am I wrong? Does anyone know why Tony is being kept on besides Tony and Ross? NO

DENNY , THANK YOU FOR THE RECIPE .

MAY GOD BLESS DAN HENING AND ALL HIS KIDS AND MAY GOD BLESS HIM IN HIS NEXT OC JOB AND GUIDE HIM .

Can we please draft some players with SPEED. When was the last time we've seen a play go for 60 plus yards. The year of the rats!!! Please Speed.

JJ, Hey way to have hope man. So you're saying that everything that ever happened in the past is going to happen again? Where do you people come up with this drama filled exclamations?

So your answer I'm assuming is to hire a proven coach, say like Jimmy Johnson, because that's sure to work? Everything that has ever been done in any certain way has either failed or succeeded in the nfl. College coaches fail and succeed, established coaches fail and succeed, o-line coaches fail and succeed, first round picks as opposed to 7th rounders fail and succeed both ways. You can't say because a situation with a completely different team and person didn't succeed so this wont. Its ignorant.

These not this

It was a sad ending to an excellent career.

Denny, it's an embarrassment and it's not hard to figure out. If Ross is this set on finding another coach, he should have FIRED Sporano, not have him hanging around. Just like happened with Singletary and all the other coaches that been canned. Anyone with eyes can see Tony is twisting in the wind.

Denny,

C'mon man are you really saying that people should reserve making a judgement until they have all the facts??

If everyone did that how could you tell the difference between the intelligent ones and the "other ones"?

step one of many needed. please get the harbaugh deal done carl peterson

Please tell us he took Lee with him.

Anyone with your eyes BOOBY! Your opinion and insight is all that ever matters, right?

I really dislike you

he will bill. have faith!

I've been waiting to see this story since week 4...thank you henning for getting out of miami!!!

You got it Loco! And while I'm at it I have a bone to pick with you. I saw that you posted your wish list and appreciate it. But here's what I was thinking, you are basically taking a 50/50 shot right? Because either Harbaugh will fail or succeed. Well you want to be right because you believe this will fail (that's a whole other nut for a different day!) If you're right you say you're going to bring up that thread to prove how others were wrong.

YOU CAN'T DO THAT. This isn't like the lottery, you literally have a 50/50 chance of being correct, that's not exactly putting yourself out there is it?

It's like waking up with your wife not knowing if the paper boy through the paper on the walk or the bushes. Half the time it makes the walk and half the time it makes the bushes. So you two bet, fine you took bushes and it's there. That doesn't make you a genius it just means you picked one of two possible answers and got it right. IT'S CALLED LUCK.

SPARANO WILL BE FIRED TONIGHT TO CLEAR THE WAY FOR ROSS TO OFFER THE COLLAGE GUY THE HC SPOT

Tony is rich because of Miami and his jobs before this...tony isn't twisting in the wind..he's prolly chillin at home playing soduku on the toilet

how do I check the time stamp on the post? All I see is the date...

Make no mistake folks this is a last ditch effort by Sparano to win back Ross, don`t think it will work just make him look more inept, He needed to have had the guts to do this in the season, even if it ment having to call the plays himself and today everybody would have his back !!!!

Thank the lord!

Finally!

The last time we saw a long play was when Ginn was here. He may not have been able to catch a cold, but at least he did catch a few long ones including one called back because of Polite's penalty vs the Texans in 2009. Marshall, Ginn, Camarillo, Bess, and Hartline looked a whole lot better than Marshall, Bess, Hartline, Moore, and Wallace. I never thought the coaches used Ginn correctly......running him on slants and crossing patterns is like asking Bess to run a fly pattern. The coaching staff and front office were a bunch of clowns and I'll be glad when they're gone.

TONY SPARANO WILL BE FIRED TONIGHT TO CLEAR THE WAY FOR ROSS TO OFFER THE COLLAGE GUY THE HC JOB...

Bobby,

I like Sparano as a person as a coach and , based on what I know, am not fond of how it has been handled.

But, we as Dolphin Fans have suffered for too long. I don't know if Harbaugh comes to Miami he will turn things around. Bit, I for win am OK with however the sitaution is handled. The Ends will justify the means if successful.

I hear you John !!!!

we gotta stop wasting draft picks on lousy qb's; john beck, pat white and chad henne. seems we wasted alot of picks in 3 years.

TONY SPARANO WILL BE FIRED TONIGHT TO CLEAR THE WAY FOR ROSS TO OFFER THE COLLAGE GUY THE HC JOB.

Thank God.

Miami can't offer Jimmy a contract yet because of the Rooney Rule and the obvious that Sparano isn't fired yet.

its harbaugh or bust fellas. please sign this guy since u already blew the cowher hiring ross

Greg Z, I agree we should stick with the QBs we have...err...well, maybe not. They should stop wasting picks on bad QBs. If I was doing the drafting I'd draft a good one.

Do you know how to check the time stamp on the post? All I see is the date...

I believe it will be the other way around, he can`t leave Cali without securing him, then comes home and fires Tony before makng press conf.
