David Lee leaving Dolphins for Ole Miss

David Lee did wonderful work in bringing to the Dolphins the signature offensive package that helped carry them to the playoffs in 2008 -- the Wildcat package.

And in doing so the quarterback coach did something perhaps no NFL quarterback coach had done before: Find a way to make your offense more explosive by removing the quarterback from the equation.

Well, Lee is taking his Wildcat scheme back to the college ranks where he first used them. Lee has parted ways with the Dolphins to become the offensive coordinator at Mississippi a source confirms.

Great!

This is a good thing for everyone.

Lee, you see, put his stamp on Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne the past two years in that Henne became a tireless worker. Henne spent countless hours preparing. Henne knew the playbook and his assignments and reads backwards and forwards.

But ...

Lee, a cautious sort, seemed to turn Henne into something of a cautious, undaring kind of quarterback. Henne didn't often dare go with his gut or heart and simply fling it. He trusted the book instead of his eyes.

And that turned Henne into something of a robot. It clearly did not work. It needed to be broken up. And now it is.

The Dolphins may not be done. There is an obvious need to upgrade the special teams and Assistant head coach and secondary coach Todd Bowles interviewed with the Dallas Cowboys lately.

It is possible Darren Rizzi, who took over as special teams coordinator when John Bonamego was fired could also leave. But just as likely he will stay while the Dolphins look for more help as in a fulltime special teams coordinator.

Bowles?

I'm told he will stay with the Dolphins. That's good. He's got a lot of work to do with a young secondary that limited mental mistakes in 2010, but struggled to catch potential interceptions that could have changed the direction of games.

The Dolphins thus have a opening at offensive coordinator and quarterback coach and could be looking for a special teams coordinator.

The Wets have an excellent o-line and plenty of speed at WR and TE. Sanchez would look worse than Henne with the crap the Fins have on O right now!

Gabbert needs to improve his strength I don't see him being a 1st rd pick but some people have him top 10. He reminds me of Clausen... Locker seems more of a player to me

Incompetent leaders yield incompetent results. That is what we have, so until that changes, the results won't change either.

most have gabbert going at number 4

Bill,

Yeah Locker

Great News!!!! Addition by subtraction.

Yea I'm just not understanding that about Gabbert I don't see him being better than Mallet Newton or Locker at all

kolb want's a trade if vick is the starter. don't know if that means much.

kolb wants to be traded, just on the lead on espn. ok, this is the dolphins chance. use the first round pick.

0x80,

Can't argue your points, I see the same things you do. My hope is that new coaching breathes some life into this kid. I jsut want to see that "will to win" come out.

We definitely need the best competition available to push him or unseat him.

well mallet is 6'6 so that basically tells us we dont want him. in the history of the nfl no qb over 6'4 has ever done anything. austin a first rd pick for kolb, thats insane. just stop

F that Jay Feeley all over again DO NOT Trade 1st RD pick for that guy maybe a 2nd rd. pick but we don't have one so i reiterate F That

Does everybody really believe that Vick is a lock to be re-signed by Philly for big money??? He got worse as the season went on and that is probably the most talented and fast O in the NFL.... Kolb might be the starter next year after all! Would Vick look all-world behind our crappy o-line and with our slow WRs and RBs???? He'd likely look worse than he was in ATL!!!

I agree 110% that Henning & Lee needed to go, but now all of the coaches sans Nolan are going. HEll, we should have sent Sparano packing and let Cowher come in and build the coaching staff around him! It obviously didn't work with Sparano the first time around. And he was too loyal to his coaches to not make changes when it was painfully obvious it needed to be done. Not sure he's going to find good coaches that are willing to come to this 3 ring circus!

TEBOW WILL BE OUT O DENVER OR ORTON ,ONE OF TWO WILL DO /

Phil Rivers is 6'5 i think he is doing pretty well for himself

Kolb has played in 5 Games?
Showed a little in a high powered offense. Jury is still out on him.

He really hasn't done anything worthy of a first round pick?

BOBBYD12, YOU NOTICE 99 PERCENT OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE CALLING TO GET READ OF HENNE AR ONE GUY HIS NAME COULD......DB

I say we sign a vet QB as insurance for Henne, and draft either Mark Ingram or Julio Jones.

We need a RB and we need another WR threat to take coverage away from Marshall. There are no stud QB's in this draft with Luck going back to school.

I personally wouldn't dare take mallet, newton or locker at 15 overall. I would even consider trading down in the 1st to pick up a 2nd rd pick as well.

What kind of idiot doesn't know how to turn off the caps lock?

The worst kind i suppose. I guess it helps me to avoid reading those moronic comments.

TOM CABLE IS AVAILABLE! BRING HIM AND HIS MEAN LEFT HOOK TO FIX THIS SOFT TEAM!

Ingram is not a 30 touch back he is a spell at best if we get him we need to keep Ronnie and then it still is a waste of a pick at 15 for a spell RB. Oregon State's RB 3rd rd if he is still there Jaquizz Rodgers is going to be like Chirs Johnson or Ahmad Bradshaw and he carried the ball for the beavers 30 + times and holds records check him out he will go late 2nd maybe early 3rd but if he has a sick 40 time could be 1st

id take williams easily over those 2 at rb. hes from vtech

but my first 2 choices for pick 15 would be blackmon at wr or one of the qbs

Dishpan,

I would take Mallett, but agree with not selecting the others. Trading down wouldn't hurt my feelings either.

I disagree on ingram, but Jones would be interesting to look at.

also like that gator kid at RB can't remember his name though

Don't know about Sheets next year, but we definitely need an explosive type back that can catch.

Dolphins will more then likely trade down for a lower 1st and a second if the past holds true. Locker is total shyt and Mallet is barely above him. Gabbert is the only one who looks like 1st Rd material. We will sign a vet FA QB and probably draft a lower RD QB to compete with Henne. Straight up, Michigan Ross is not going to let Michigan Henne be thrown under the bus. Ross will spend the money for the weapons and coaches to fix and help Henne. But Henne WILL be competing in camp for the starting position. Watch and see

I heard Williams was a problem he failed RB conditioning tests and was late to meetings I'm not sure he is going to be available in the 3rd either he seems to be the 2nd or 3rd best at RB & Rodgers had better numbers and is really elusive and quick I'm not really a fan of his plus he was injured this year so...

We have Patrick Cobbs for running back and returns next year. We are set.

@ Aloco

i'm wit u brudha! I believe Tony Sporano is a good enough coach to lead this team. It is the players that dictate and represent who they are and yes the coach plays an significant role but it does sound like the players are bought into sporano's philosophy but just gave up against New England. ONE THING I WOULD LIKE TO GET OUT OF MY SYSTEM IS THAT WE NEED TO DRAFT/PICK UP VIA FA A QB!!!! I'M NOT SOLD ON CHECK DOWN HENNE WHICH WE NEED TO GET RID OF QUICKLY!!!!!!!!!!!

Any word on who our next offensive coordinator will be? The Minn Star Tribune yesterday said that Josh McDaniels is likely to go to Miami.

Don't know how accurate that is with his history with Nolan and Marshall.

I see Locker being the starter for 2012 if we draft him let Henne have another shot next season and resign to be a backup for 2012. He definetly needs some work but after Newton he is the only QB i'd say is worth a 1st.

if we keep check down Henne for another year i will lose ALL confidence in the dolphins and especially Tony Sporano......PLZ GET RID OF HIM TONY!!!!!!!!

Do we really know how good he is as an OC. Does he have innovation or is he simply a benefactor of the Patriot system.

Chad Henne vs Tyler Thigpen
Completion % CH
Acuracy TT
Foot work TT
Arm strength CH
Throw on run TT
Knowledge of play book CH
Can throw more than one pass (lobs, floaters and fades) Definitly TT , Henne has only one pass he can throw and thats the fastball. Henne can't move in the pocket and have you seen him try to throw on the run? terrible. Work with Thigpen on his defence recognition.

Sparano has been using Cobbs as a returner for 3 years now, the guy couldn't break one against the girl scouts. I ask you what kind of coach is happy with Patrick Cobbs as a return man?

henne can't succeed in his own dreams.

I GREE W/YOU LOSO204...I JUST READ THE FIRST 2 LINES OF YOUR POST AND STOPPED B/C WE AGREE.

HENNE IS THE MAN

The Dolphins need to hire a quarterback coach who can convince Henne that he is not indeed a robot. Good luck climbing aboard that sinking ship.

Enough with the Thigpen, he is a FA and he ain't coming back.

i say lets NOT use a draft pick on a RB. We have Lex who is capable of makin big plays. Lets mix up Ronnie and Lex! It will change up the game a bit and make defenses second guess. Lex can also be used on passing plays too, and not just all running plays!

thots?

phins need someone new returnin punts n kickoffs, which would in gettin better field pos

@ Aloco

Huh? I'm not a Henne fan what so ever!!!!!!!

JB - Here is the Marshall quote:

“Henne, the way he plays the game is he goes exactly through his reads, no matter the matchup,” Marshall said. “Then you get to the sideline, and it’s some conflict there because they don’t like it (changing routes on the fly).”

“You know, the quarterback coach is doing his job, but he didn’t know that me and Tyler were on the same page as far as seeing the same thing out there, and that’s the concern,” he added. “If I would’ve caught that third one, there probably still would’ve been a debate (on the sideline). We just got to get on the same page.”

Aloco, please stop with the Marshall dropped balls thing. I've explained that one to you before: behind, over, under - most were Henne's fault. Marshall actually had very few drops that were properly thrown, accurate balls. If it were not for Marshall and Bess making some seriously acrobatic catches, Henne's numbers would've stunk even more than they did. I don't have a crystal ball... perhaps Henne is far better than his play showed over 30 games. Perhaps he is the second coming of Joe Montana. Maybe all it takes is a new QB coach to bring that out in him. I truly have no idea. :-)

LOSO204,

very good list but i wud keep thiggy and hartline. Hartline opens up the field a bit (but has the worst feet EVER) and thiggy is a good 2nd stringer IMO..... If we can get a good QB coach, he will teach Thiggy the proper way in playin the QB position.

JIMMY JAM,

MARSHALL IS TRYING TO TAKE THE SPOT LIGHT OFF HIS DROPPED BALLS ,SECOND ON THE LEAGUE WITH LOVE.PLEASE TELL MR MARSHALL TO PLAY ONLY AND COACHES WILL DO THEIR JOB .WE DON'T NEED A CANCER IN THE TEAM.

CANCER W/25 MILLION GUARANTEED .

David Lee going back to work with Houston Nutt who he coached with at Arkansas. That is a good move for him. For one it gives him job security because if Sparano has a bad year he and his entire staff will be looking for jobs and also maybe Lee is better in working with young college guys then NFL QBs who have been mentored by other coaches throughout their college careers.

No hard feelings to David Lee. He is the MAIN reason Sparano even has a 11-5 season to fall back on. No Wild Cat meant 7-9 for Miami. Lee has done more for Miami then Sparano. That is not an opinion that is a FACT!

Best of Luck David Lee. Thanks for GETTING us to the playoffs.

Go back to the best sport in the world, College Football!

LOS0204,

FOR THE LAST 120 YEARS WE KEEP SAYING THIS GUY (( OPENS UP THE FIELD )) ,MARSHALL HAVE 3 TD AND WE ARE STILL TALKING ABOUT OPENING UP THE FIELED .GIVE ME A BREAK .WE NEED 6 PEOPLE TO LINE THEM UP AND THROW THEM THE BALL , THEN THE FIELD WILL BE OPEN .

PATS NEVER USE THIS OLD QUOTE , (( OPEN UP THE FIELD )) .

I like Gabbert to end up being the best quarterback in the draft but I don't want the Dolphins to take him at 15. Too many other needs. If Henne can't make it work this year under a new OC and QB coach, then we draft QB next year.

Incidentally, good news about David Lee. With Lee and Hening both gone and Sparano and Ireland back, the off-season has gone exactly as I would have hoped so far.

Aloco,

trust me i'm not! r u related to check down Henne? Dude, we gotta get rid of him! He shows no confidence in himself! Without a mobile QB in this pass happy league u r DOOMED! u CANNOT have a pocket passer to lead ur team if ur name ain't Manning or Brady!

David Lee, don't let the door hit Iu in ur ass. The one and done playoff wasn't worth the two lousy years of coaching you did with Henne.

I am not sure if Lee was any good of a QB coach. I do know he is the MAIN reason Miami even has made it to the playoffs in a decade.

Thanks for the Wild Cat and thanks for getting Miami to the playoffs. Best wishes bro.

Bill Connors making predictions again.....the kiss of death!! Have you got any right yet Bill? Sparano gone? Irleand gone? Cowher coning to town? Hope nobody is putting any moeny on Bill's predictions, they would have lost their shirts by now!

Bill, what game is Sparano getting fired after next year, so we can come back and talk about it?

Another site is reporting that Nolan has sent a letter to the league asking for permission to make a lateral move to Dallas - any truth? I sure hope not but after last week, you can't blame him for wanting to walk away from this wreck of a team.

bobbyd12,

You have no idea what Lee did in all fairness. Yet we do know that Henne has a turnover in 21 out of 27 starts and 14 straight games with a turnover. Yeah must've been all on the coach.

OPEN your eyes people, Henne stinks!
