Dolphins a loooong way from being good enough

The question the Dolphins were asking, the question I was asking, the question you had to be asking as the New England Patriots dismantled the Dolphins 38-7 on Sunday, was ARE THE DOLPHINS THIS FAR FROM BEING PATRIOTS GOOD?

Make no mistake, the Dolphins do have talent. Their defensive line is good and deep. Their specialists (punter, kicker, long snapper) are among the better ones in the league. Their wide receiver corps is one good deep threat from being outstanding. The corners will be good once they figure out how to catch interceptions.

But this game was such a total butt whipping, such a domination, that it had to raise questions about, about ... everything.

Remember the Patriots didn't play Wes Welker, or Deion Branch, or Aaron Hernandez. Remember they turned the lights out on the offense in the fourth quarter -- running instead of passing on third down, and running one fourth down when they could have kicked a field goal.

And still the Patriots looked like they're a great team while the Dolphins looked like a bottom drawer team light years from competing for a title. Understand that New England won twice as many games as the Dolphins this year. Twice as many!

And they're rebuilding. And they have three picks in the first 33 selections of next spring's NFL draft. And they have six selections in the first three rounds.

The Dolphins, meanwhile, will be without a second round pick.

Miami will have the No. 15 pick in the first round behind Carolina, Denver, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Arizona, Cleveland, San Francisco, Tennessee, Dallas, Washington, Houston, Minnesota, Detroit and St. Louis.

Can the Dolphins pluck a super star at No. 15 that will bridge the gap between them and New England? Only if that guy is a future Hall of Fame worthy quarterback. But those don't typically hang out until the 15th pick in the draft unless several folks in several NFL outposts are blowing it on draft day.

The point?

No matter what happens in the next couple of days. No matter who the next coach or general manager is -- be it Tony Sparano and Jeff Ireland or someone else -- this Dolphins team isn't borderline title ready.

They think they're close.

They think they're one or two players away. I believe they're five or six players away. And as we saw on Sunday, that's a far, far way from the team the Dolphins have to beat to win their division.

C'mon, We'll draft an O-Lineman before we draft a QB.

In all serious, We have to resign Tony Mcdaniel.

We get Odrick back next year too. I'd say defense is almost set, maybe add some late potential players in draft. I'd look to fix Oline late in draft or through free agency also. Need to draft speed and QB this year.

its 9 am and the circus is still in town come on mr. ross what are you waiting for?

Your wrong again armando, remember we lost 4 home games we should have one pittsburgh, cleveland, buffalo and detroit had we had a better Oc and Qb we would have made the playoffs. It starts from the top Sparand makes the decisions who to start and who makes the play calling. If we were playing for something we would have showed up I believe. I don't understand why if our offence of line was week why didn't we go with thigpen and use his mobility to extend the plays. sparano has to go Period.

Problem is Armando, that they have been 6 or 7 players away for 10 years. When does it end? I really don't think Ireland is a good talent evaluator and don't think Sparano is a good coach. They aren't terrible, but in the AFC east, that's not acceptable. There were many personnel moves that we as fans question and turn out to be correct. That's not good. Look at yesterdays game where Belichek was playing chess and Sparano was a checkers player. It's not even close. The gap in personnel is big but lump in the gap in coaching and talent evaluation and the gap is huge. A change needs to be made.

Brady was the 199th draft pick and Ryan Leaf was #1 - numbers don't always determine production

At least the Miami loss & the Raider win guaranteed New England doesn't pick in the first round before us. Man, the Pats really blew it.

I am still waiting for the Offensive Cordinator to retire. If he doesnt retire today he should be fired inmediately. Also Channing "the big mouth" Crowder should be released as soon as he can be released. That would be a great start for the offseason. Anyone disagree??

Hirchman, I agree. The problem is that the Fins, currently, do not have the ability to identify Brady like talent! Fix that and we fix a lot of problems!

I hear everything but it honestly seems that if we had a decent QB and OC, and a head coach that WANTED to score TDs instead of FGs, we could have easily been 11-5. For our D to be highly ranked being yet on the field so much...but our secondary still needs work. We can't cover tight ends. Just baffling how no one can turn this thing around. Starts at the top.

I agree Miami does have some good talent but they also have glaring holes. The QB situation is as ugly as it has ever been. All you Henne supporters aren't watching the same game as the rest of us. Henne isn't a starting caliber QB in the NFL. He can play decent in spots. He has some decent moments but c'mon open your eyes. His lack of pocket awareness, leadership and add to that accountability now, Henne stinks.

Miami has a chance to find a really good player and they need to go best player available. That is best player whether it's offense or defense because Miami isn't one player away they are several.

I think we need to find someone who can fix our injury problem. Just finished reading a book that briefly touched on this as it related to other teams. In a chapter called Injury Proofing the Body out of the book The 4 Hour Body by Timothy Ferris, he mentions how the Falcons, Colts and Bears "injury proofed" their teams by hiring an injury specialist who uses the FMS system by Gray Cook. The Falcons went from 7 season ending injuries in 2007 to 1 in 2008.

We probably need a new quarterback - Chad Henne's confidence is gone, but preventing all of these injuries we've had the last couple of years would have gone a LOOOONG way to improving our record, in my opinion.

The weird thing is that last ears p0ost at this time was about HOW CLOSE WE WERE....rember....we all thought we were the jets mirror image...and the jets were in the AFC Championship game....thats what we used as the measuring stick....boy did we come up short.

Bill Belichek has one again shown the AFC and the NFL why he is the best in the game....and they are the only measuring stick needed....we aimed low....and we hit our target....now lets wise up and put together a team that can compete with the PATRIOTS...not the jets....If we do that we will competing for championships year in and year out....and not giving a dam about some silly rivalry

The Dolphins Suck

Seems like the Dolphins r not the only things falling out of the sky

Straight up Dolfans
Chemtrails in South Florida which have been absent for months, Thank God

R now back with major onslaught
Was tossing the rock yesterday out back in South Florida
Huge chemtrail straight lines and Xs 6 to 8 at a time stretching across Broward county
Not contrails
Lasted for hours right b4 sunset and all white lines acroos the sky slowly opened up and formed toxic chemclouds

Keep your eyes towards the sky
look for large invasive white chemtrails
They will not dissipate like short contrails
They will slowly open up and expand

this is nuts and must be addressed

Seems like toxic chemtrails in the sky over Arkansas also:

(CNN) -- Arkansas game officials hope testing scheduled to begin Monday will solve the mystery of why up to 5,000 birds fell from the sky just before midnight New Year's Eve.

The birds -- most of which were dead -- were red-winged blackbirds and starlings, and they were found within a one-mile area of Beebe, about 40 miles northeast of Little Rock, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said. Birds fell over about a one-mile area, the commission said in a statement.

As of Saturday, between 4,000 and 5,000 birds had been found dead, said Keith Stephens with the commission.

"Shortly after I arrived, there were still birds falling from the sky," said commission wildlife officer Robby King in the statement. He said he collected about 65 dead birds.

Sorry Armando I don't believe this game is a true indicator of ANYTHING. It's pretty obvious the team mailed it in yesterday. I didn't see the game but by all reports there was very little effort from the boys in orange and aqua. And honsestly, I'm not surprised. What EXACTLY were they playing for yesterday? Not to have a losing season? To beat a division rival? These are all small consequences after a very disappointing season. I get the 'got to be professional' and 'have to lay it on the line every time you cross the lines' stuff but these guys are only human. They're as down as us fans....maybe worse. We lost some games this season that we SHOULD have won and I think the team knows they came up short big time!

The Pats make a LOT of teams look bad. They beat the playoff bound Jets 45-3! They beat the playoff bound Steelers bad too. They're a GREAT team!

Last thing I'll add....we were missing soe important people too....try Dansby, Hartline, Carey, Will Allen, Merling, Odrick and others. We have to have a full lineup and play these guys perfectly to have any chance. You're right, we're still 5-6 players. We can all argue what positions those guys should play.

Home sucks

What a total overreaction Armando, I'm sorry but Miami's d just doesnt fall apart in one week when they were ranked 3rd in the league.
Its obvious to anyone watching yesterday's game these players simply quit on Sparano.

No matter what they have said publically TS has lost this team, they issued a public statement yesterday that things are wrong behind the scenes at the Dolphins that Mr Ross needs to fix, ASAP before the likes of Harbaugh, Cowher, Fisher etc are gone.

St Louis were in a far worse position than us last season, add a franchise QB in the 1st round and voila, they're relevant again, an offense heavy draft and a young offensive minded head coach with a good knowledge of QB's, Jim Harbaugh, Chad P as QB coach, find an OC, next season we could be relevant again too.

I'm tired of Miami being ignored, if it wasn't for the fact we were so bad yesterday that TS is firmly on the hot seat nobody would be talking about Miami at all.

The Dolphins Suck

I'll say it again - a good OC made Cassel in KC look like a superstar. Last year, he was a mess, and the OC was gone.

Henne can still be very good. he showed too much last year.

And B-Marsh is not as great as he thinks he is. He couldn't keep his feet in, in the back of the endzone in a game that the Dolphins should have won, and didn't play hurt.

hey marino there were close games we won that could have easily been losses too so that argument has two sides dont try to sugar coat this mess

But the players "play hard for Sporano".....there goes that theory

2 years in a row, we are 7-6 and we finish 7-9. Sparano is obviously unable to get the best of his players when it counts. I hope he's gone asap.

We are at least 2 years from contending. Time to find (and develop) a QB, a RB, a FS, a TE and fixing the OL.

And all the guys calling for the Dolphins to trade for Kevin Kolb don't know what they are talking about. Did any of you guys watch the game yesterday? 3 picks, one in the red zone, a fumble and another losing effort. This guy has shown nothing in the pros to make you think he is going to be a good pro. He has trouble reading defences and he misses open receivers. It's the same you blame Henne for and Kolb's supporting cast is much better. On top of all that, it's likely going to take a first round pick to get this guy. This is organizational suicide!

I just heard on espn this morning that at least 5 new teams make the playoffs each year. Just goes to show that quick turnarounds happen in the nfl. So I don't think the Fins are that far away if - IF - they make some good decisions. Like not just getting a new OC but an entire new offensive philosophy. They need to play to win, they need to find a QB who protects the ball AND airs it out. so I am hopeful that the Fins are close to being a playoff team in 2011.

That`s right Homes, we are back and spraying like freaking crazy!
Any moron could see this is not normal.
However y`all are way too stupid.
Besides the media is forbidden to say anything about what we do. Screw all of you fools.
I`1l be spRaying chemtrails all day, AGAIN TODAY AND NOTHING WILL BE REPORTED!

what sparano could say; henne had only 6 minus plays and graded out fairly well. we'll watch more film and correct those mistakes. we have a really resilient bunch in there. they get it,they really do. clemons had 46 offensive plays;only 2 mistakes(for touchdowns). we're getting ready for next year.

Craig M....your the eternal optimist and I respect that...but the reason they had nothing to play for is their own fault....if you win early...you can play late...and they did neither

of course lousy overrated players like crowder are gonna stick up for sparano because theres no accountability with him you can play like garbage and not do your job and the bonehead sparano will still stick up for ya why wouldnt they want him to stay

The Dolphin Suck

How bout them Patriots!

Now thats a football team

and the depth, WOW!

Here is the formula for success:

1) Move up to the top 5 and draft Cam Newton. It might cost this year's 1st & 3rd & next year's 2nd, but it's worth it to get a franchise QB.

2) Up-grade the O-line through free-agency

3) Re-sign Ronnie and Ricky

4) Draft a speedy wide-out in the fourth round

5) Draft two O-linemen in later rounds

Here we go with 'St. Louis added a franchise QB' stuff again. Bradford? His numbers aren't that dissimilar this year to Henne's and the team's finished with identical records. Did you see his numbers yesterday in a 'must-win' game, against a defence that has been giving up over 30 points a game, consistently? Less than 50 per cent completion percentage, one pick, ZERO D passes and 165 yards passing. Pretty lousy day! I like the kid but can we STOP with the 'franchise' QB stop. He's accomplised nothing yet!

Chuck, Henne sucks, period. He is a career back up. They need to trade Maarshall as well, for picks. He isn't what they need, especially without a QB. Bess may actually turn out to be just as good. They need speed and playmakers everywhere. So trade Marshall, Starks or whoever can get them picks. They need a new coach and GM and let them go to work. Parcells would have been good for them 15 years ago, not now.

Why the QB carousel yesterday?? did we turn into a college team running the option QB?

More proof that this coach doesn't really know what he doing....if Henne was "nicked" up...he should have just sat him......

Craig M,

I actually like Kolb. He was playing with 4th and 5th receivers, back up TE, and 3 back up offensive linemen. However, you are right the ransom the Eagles are going to want is too ruch for my blood. He should be at most a 3rd rounder with a 2nd round conditional in 2012 seems fair but Andy Reid won't do that. Vick always gets banged up since his early years with the way he plays. I would just franchise Vick (no long term deal)and keep Kolb

Should have taken warning
It's just, people mourning, running, hiding, lost
You can't find, find a place to go
So it's chem skies at night, chem skies at night
Wo oh, wo oh oh oh oh

Craig, I watched the game and the Rams receivers dropped 5 or 6 catchable balls. Most would have resulted in big gains too. Bradford will be three times the QB Henne is.

I agree with mando on this one.
We need 1 guard and 1 center (at least, if not 2 guards), a RB, a QB, an ILB (to pair with Dansby), that makes 5, probably a deep threat WR and a 2nd TE, plus a lot of special teamers (plus an offensive staff and maybe a head coach), we´ve proven on the field this year that we aren't a top team, right now we´re an average team, sadly but true

We just suck. Flat out. It's not a few players here or there. It's the entire, pathetic organization. We can't pick the right players, there's no continuity, no identity, no spark. This entire organization needs a makeover. Unfortunately, that's what we've been trying to do for the past decade and beyond. The team sucks, henne ducks, the coaching sucks, the GM sucks, Parcells sucks, Ross is acting like a fool with all this celebrity glitz and glam, the fans suck (sorry, but our fan intensity and identity is pathetic). Basically.....it f#*king sucks to be a Dolfan right now.

Mike B agree but

Ronnie rushed for a whopping 14 Yds and
Ricky rushed 6 times for 5 YDs and a fumble

Hey Mike B

The FBI ... would call that, a clue

Homey D Clown

I wonder if Sporano was in his office at 2 AM getting ready for next SEP...."I can get this thing turned around"...

I'm more with craig on this one. Yesterday's game shows us that NE is ready for a playoff run and we're done. The defense had nothing to play for. And when they saw the offense not do anything they mailed it in.
I'm not sure if sparano stays or goes but this team is a few players and some good coaching away from being in the playoffs.
Go Phins!

The biggest problem on offense was the QB's inability to throw the ball down field and the o-line's inability to run block. Ronnie and Ricky still have legs left, but need blockers. Fix the O-line in free agency and the latter part of the the draft. Get Cam Newton by moving up and sacrificing picks from this year and next year's draft. Do this, and we are in the playoffs next year. We are NOT that far away if these things are done.

Fist Pump & Ball Boy Ninja Mutant Teenage GM:

Peter Principle personified. Given jobs by Tuna wayyyy over their level of competence.

Henne: Never had it. Never will.

Henne had QB rating of 21 in the 1st Q yesterday

Any Questions?

Homey D Clown

Mike B....re-sign ronnie and ricky...why?

Up here in NE, the Pats rule the day...even above the Celtics.

I'm afraid the Fins have lost that all important "winning attitude".

Tom Brady & Bill Belichick HATE losing, it's just not in their DNA.

Every team is as good as the people running it and this is true in every sport & every organization.

We need NEW people in key postions starting with our GM & talent evaluators.

HC & OC are second

QB is third.

Put NEW BLOOD in these key positions and we will change for the better.

Mike B,

With all do respect your draft plans suck lol. I don't even have a problem with trading up for a QB. Keeping Ricky and Ronnie though, no sir! Ronnie averaged like 3.6 a carry and ran not to get hurt this year. He is done in Miami. I wouldn't mind resigning Ricky and drafting a guy like Mark Ingram or LaMichael James if they declare. I also like Mikael Leshoure from Illinois but with no 2nd rounder and the 15th being too early I'd go Ingram and James. There are also free agent possibilities, Michael Bush (Oakland), D'Angelo Williams (Carolina), and to a lesser extent Jerome Harrison (Philadelphia). But Ronnie sucks. I can't even say he was a dissappointment. He never carried the load in college and although he was 20 or so pounds heavier then Cadillac Williams he wasn't the short yardage or goal line back at Auburn. Ronnie is a change of pace back but let him carry the load, he can't.

jrljr2 - I can see and understand why most view Henne as a failure. I can live with differing views.

I agree with everything else you wrote. I think Marshall is a mistake (he's good, but not explosive) and I think we have enough depth at D line to trade some.

I just keep wondering why the best offensive game this year was without B-Marsh. And 4-4 at the turn, versus some really tough teams, had me believeing we were on a good path.

I like Sporano, but not as our HC.

the calls yesterday were horrible as always. 3rd and 14 and we're in a 2 wide reciever set? So both recievers are double covered so henne has to throw it double coverage and it got intercepted. That destroyed the game. Our defense mailed it in after that play.
henning was the biggest problem with the phins the this year. He was also the problem last year. I said it if sparano doesn't fire henning he will bring him down. And now sparano is fighting for his job.

Chad Henne's first-quarter rating was 21.4

Dolfans and nonobsevant chemtrail watchers,

Fact is:
If you're 0-1, throwing your first pass in the mud, your QB rating is 39.6

U Get That, Huh?

Any Questions for the sheeple?

I didn't say I don't like Bradford, I'm saying I'm not convinced YET he's a franchise QB. All he's done is take his team from 2-14 to 7-9, no small accomplishment, but don't forget that is an AWFUL division and he plays those teams six times. Can we all just ease up on the 'franchise' QB talk for at least one more season. It's a term EVERYONE loves to throw around and the reality is there are very few of them out there.

Andy, I know you are one of the guys that likes Kolb and I know you are one of the ones that has advocated trading for him. You and I can argue all day as to who the better QB is, the reality is if Kolb comes here, under the exact same conditions that Henne played under this season, he will struggle and we'll hear a lot of the same stuff that we hear on here about Henne. We have a broken offence and a broken system and it's time to start working on it. No Kolb!

trade this years draft and next years for a QB. this team is young enough to do it. NOW IS THE TIME !!!!!

If the true measuring stick are the Patriots then look at the one constant that they have had. Great QB play. Tom Brady has been consistantly great since he came in the league. The one constant the Dolphins have had is below average to horrible QB play. The one year where the Dophins got some exceptional QB play was also the year they won the division. That was also the year that Brady was hurt.

My point is, the best way for this team to make huge strides is to vastly improve their QB play. The Dolphins have been fooling around with all these different quarterbacks for so long it is time we really looked for a long term solution.

Bradford threw a beautiful bomb that was dropped by his anonymous WR. Had a couple of other drops.

Henne NEVER connected on a bomb this year, save perhaps the underthrow that Hartline bailed him out on.

I'd take Bradford right now ----far better than Henne already.

If Luck stays at school, I would hope we could trade this years 1st for a third / second this year and a first next year.

I think taking a QB late in the draft, would be ok, too. But the O-line and speed are my priorities. Speed can be WR or RB or TE. But one or two for sure.

According to ESPN:

Kubiak is staying put in Houston
Garrett is staying in Dallas
Mangeni is fired in Cleveland
...& Sparano is in "serious trouble" down in Miami.

I think Sporano should stay, even after yesterdays' debacle. Why? Because he's shown with the right QB he can lead the team to the playoffs and he makes changes when they need to be made. People are so focused on the offense being bad, but nobody talks about what a turn-around he made to the defense. Not only with Nolan, but also changing the LB's coach. People are so focused on the home record, but nobody gives credit to the away record. Before going up to play the best team in football(who dominate EVERYBODY) yesterday we had one of the best road records in the league. Nobody seems to care about that. Special teams still needs work, but since he made the coaching change it HAS gotten better. How many people could take a 2nd year QB, with a shaky/injured OL and an over the hill OC and go to the Super Bowl?! 3 years ago we were 1-15. How many people REALLY thought it would only take 3 years to win a championship after that?! EVERY SINGLE player WANTS to play for Sporano and thinks he's a good coach. There is something to be said for that. I realize they played terribly yesterday, but it's the last game of the season with nothing to play for and guys are banged up and they're playing a team that is light years ahead of everyone else in the league. That equals an ass-whooping. If Sporano stays and we get a high-quality OC, draft some speed and get a decent QB, what do you say then? How long did it take Cowher to win his first SB??????????
