I know what you are thinking: You are simply wondering why him?
If ESPN's report that Brian Daboll will be hired as Miami's new offensive coordinator (The Herald has not as of this writing been able to independently confirm this), then you're asking why coach Tony Sparano hired a coordinator whose team scored fewer points than the Dolphins broken offense in 2010.
The Dolphins also scored more points than Daboll's Browns in 2009.
I don't have an explanation for you at this time. I'm hoping to get an explanation at some point. It's a tough day for that as I'm flying back from Boston today so timing might be an issue.
In the meantime, I can tell you Daboll (35 years old) is younger than Dan Henning, whom he is replacing. And he is an enthusiastic sort as the video below shows.
Daboll's NFL experience is out of the Bill Belichick coaching tree. He was hired in 2000 by the Patriots as a defensive assistant. He became wide receivers coach in 2002. He left the Pats in 2006 to go with Eric Mangini to the Jets as their QB coach.
In 2009, Daboll again migrated with Mangini, this time to Cleveland where he served as offensive coordinator. Obviously, he was on the outs in Cleveland when Mangini was fired. And now he is apparently on the ins with the Dolphins.

Armando, this really makes sense. (sarcasm) Cleveland beat the Dolphins this season.....so why not hire the OC who beat the offensively poor Dolphins. The result the BLIND WILL LEAD THE BLIND.

IF YOU READ THAT ARTICLE ABOUT HIM IN NFL NATION BLOG ,HE COULD BE VERY WELL OUR NOLAN ON OFFENSE ,HE'S GOUND FLOOR GUY,BILLICHECK WAS IMPRESSED W/HIM ENOUGH ,HE MAD HIM A WIDE RECEIVER COACH IN 2002 BEFORE HE MOVES TO BE THE QB COACH FOR THE JETS .
I DECLARE MYSELF A FAN OF THE DOBALL

I'll tell you guys what...and I haven't looked for this on the net.....this is for the people who feel this is a good move....
Can you find another team that FIRED the OC and went and got one from a team that scored less points than they did.....
It might be out there

Could they please just kick us in the balls all at once and get this slow torture over with.almost laughable if it was not so sad our once proud franchise
Posted by: ashevillephinfan | January 17, 2011 at 07:40 PM
PLEASE, will everyone give this guy a chance.. he uses the middle of the field more, little seam plays= better use of tight end..there was a baltimore team a few years ago that had shannon sharpe that ran this same offense..they won the super bowl that year with trent dilfer, ill say that again, trent dilfer..lets see what a top 5 defense with a competent offense can do..this can work folks and be very effective..25 yard chunks with guys 6'5 guys like marshall and fasano and te we draft..i fully expect us to draft a te early,3rd or 4th round te..saunders looks real nice, he has background flaws, but please give this a chance ladies and gentlemen..thanks for hearing me out and either agree with me or not, i would love to hear your thoughts, good or bad.
Posted by: chris72 | January 17, 2011 at 07:41 PM
NO, NO, NO!!!! WHY, WHY, WHY??? ROSS, I THOUGHT YOU WERE HAND PICKING OUR OC SINCE YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN AGGRESSIVE AND MORE WIDE OPEN OFFENSE!!!! USE SAME BLUEPRINT WHEN YOU HIRED NOLAN... NOLAN HAS TURNED BADLY RANKED DEFENSES INTO TOP 10'S, WHAT HAS DABOLL DONE, BESIDES FALL FROM THE BELLICHEAT TREE??? HIRE CHILDRESS OR MCDANIEL. AT LEAST THEIR OFFENSES RANKED IN THE TOP 15... SAY HE WAS HIRED TO BE OUR QB COACH!!!!

I know the second a front office starts listening to the fans they get fired. But when a coach gets a chance in the NFL and does a bad job he usually has to take a step back and go back to what he knows before he gets his next chance. An example would of been if Sparano was fired he would of went back to the offensive line for someone Parcells has ties with.
Daboll did NOTHING in Cleveland to earn another shot in Miami. He caught the Pats unprepared and taking the game for granted much like yesterday's game. Peyton Hillis has a career day and Colt McCoy dinked and dunked. He did nothing special that game. And against the Dolphins I see a few people point out Ben Watson's big day who cares it was worth 13 points.
Miami picked the only decent candidate willing to coach on a lame duck staff, period. Daboll was over matched as an offensive coordinator in Cleveland. He will fit right in with Sparano. What a shame for Mike Nolan. He must feel he is with a room full of idiots in Miami.

To ashevillephinfan: Preach on brother!
But don't worry, the Mayan calander says the world will end in December 2012, we only have to suffer through two more drafts and a season and a 3/4s before we are put out of our misery.

bobbyd12 I don't know if you've been told or not but they sell these things called jackets, gloves, and scarfs that not only keep you warm but too warm at times. Also, waaaayyyyyy up here in the frozen tundra of NY we've figured out how to heat our homes and cars in order to stay warm. It's a simple concept really, using electricity, gas, or forced air we are able to heat our living spaces to a comfortable degree.
And you had better hope we "out of staters" keep rooting for the Dolphins because you in staters are doing a piss poor job. You couldn't even fill the stadium last year for a huge game determining our playoff fate. And when you are there, you're asleep.
You know all the whining you always complain about? Thank your hometown reporters for creating the whole sky is falling mentality year in and year out. David Hyde is the king of all whiners. And I do believe he writes and lives in FLA.
Your out of state shtick is boring and nonsensical.
Posted by: Denny | January 17, 2011 at 07:50 PM
This bothers me mostly not because a big name wasn't hired but again I wonder where the Dolphins will form their identity. This past season Miami had no identity. The Defense did the best they could with captain turnover QBing for Miami.
But as an offense the identity was lost. What exactly was Cleveland's identity? They were 21st in rushing and 29th in passing then was behind a better offensive line then Miami's.

BELICHEAT WAS IMPRESSED ENOUGH TO MAKE HIM WR COACH... THATS SUPPOSED TO IMPRESS US
Posted by: SureShockeR | January 17, 2011 at 07:52 PM
LETS PRAY ANDREW LUCK COMES OUT THAT WAY THE OTHER QBS DROP
Posted by: SureShockeR | January 17, 2011 at 07:56 PM
So on the Doball thing. As usual I will wait until he has a chance to prove himself IN MIAMI. I don't care what he did in Cleveland. Like so many people pointed out in the previous blog, sometimes it just takes the right mix of people to collaborate and get the job done.
I'm not saying this guy is going to succeed and I'm not saying he's definitely going to suck. Mostly because I do not own the crystal ball that so many others seem to possess and use every time a player or coach is brought in.
Yes people were right about Wilford and Green. And the same amount of people were so wrong about Bess and Wake. "Great, now we're taking players from Canada, WE SUCK", AND, "This kid is shorter than me and he played for Hawaii,,,yippeee what a find"!
So I will wait to pass judgment until I see what they actually do here in Miami. Can I get a crystal ball at Sharper Image?
Posted by: Denny | January 17, 2011 at 07:57 PM
YES, IT SURE DOES IMPRESS US THAT BILLIECHECK HAD TO NAME HIM A WR COACH IN 2002 AFTER WORKING FROM 200-2002 W'THE OFFENSE TO BREAK THE FILMS FOR THE COACHES ....HE WORKED FOR PATS UNTILE DURINGT THE GLORY YEARS FROM 2002-2007 AND GOT 3 SB RINGS WHILE MOST OF US SITTING ON THE SOFA EATING .
Posted by: ALoco | January 17, 2011 at 07:57 PM
Brian Daboll supporters,
Outside of "give this guy a chance" someone please explain what makes you feel a guy who was the play caller for a worse offense will succeed?
Posted by: Andy NJ | January 17, 2011 at 07:58 PM
And was Daboll sought after by many teams...NO he wasn't...so that is yet another reason that Miami settled on this guy. It's a shame...this is my prediction...2011 Miami has a horrible year, Tony gets fired, and then we are all back at square one having to hire an entire new coaching staff. This all should have been done after this years debacle...now we get to waste yet another year and watch the jets and Patty's surge into the playoffs...sickening, disheartening, unacceptable.
Posted by: cowkilla | January 17, 2011 at 07:59 PM
Wake and Bess were successful at their previous stops at their current posistions. He was not
Posted by: ashevillephinfan | January 17, 2011 at 08:00 PM
Daboll I mean. And ALoco that was a good pre-nickname. My vote is for "Dough-Ball". But only if he completely sucks here. If he and Tony find some chemistry I shall refer to him as "The Chosen One" or "Da-Baller". Not sure yet :)
Posted by: Denny | January 17, 2011 at 08:01 PM
Wake and Bess were both successful at their current positions at their last stops before Miami. He was not
Posted by: ashevillephinfan | January 17, 2011 at 08:03 PM
Andy...exactly. That's what some on here keep saying...give the guy a chance..give Tony another chance..how many years and chances to we have to sit through? I'm sock of it, at least 15 years of crap and mediocrity..when will some of you learn....when will YOU finally be sick and tired of so many years piled up with bad results?
Posted by: cowkilla | January 17, 2011 at 08:03 PM
Note to Sparano:it's a very soft real estate market in S.FL.,so you may want to go ahead and put your house on the market now--it sure looks like you'll be looking for a new job soon enough.
Posted by: Finsfan Ralph | January 17, 2011 at 08:06 PM
Did anyone actually support him Andy? I read a lot of lets see what happens before throwing hissy fit posts but no one that really said "Im so happy they hired him, he was the best choice".
Did I miss something? Did someone say something like that? It seems as though people are being more cautious with their approach seeing how it could go both ways.
Because seriously you could do some research and find out that plenty of offensive coordinators coached bad offenses but went on to coach good offenses.
I just think people want to see it play out before complaining all year over something that hasn't even happened yet.
Posted by: Denny | January 17, 2011 at 08:06 PM
IM GOIN TO WAIT TIL AFTER THE DRAFT OR WELL INTO THE DRAFT
LIKE I SAID IM NOT IMPRESSED WITH THE HIRE
I REALLY REALLY REALLY HOPE THEY PROVE ME WRONG I REALLY DO I WANT TO WIN AND PUT SOME NUMBERS UP THAT SCORE BOARD AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
I DONT WANT TO RUN THE BALL WITH 9MINUTES LEFT IN THE GAME TO KILL THE CLOCK BECAUSE WE RE UP BY A FIELD GOAL... I WANT US TO SCORE AGAIN AND ATTACK NOT BE SO CONSERVATIVE AND PREDICTABLE I WANT US TO BE THE AGGRESSOR AND STOP REACTING TO WHAT THEY GIVE US.. AND TAKE IT!!
I WANT TO CONSIDER GOIN AFTER PLAYERS LIKE I.E. SANTONIO HOLMES OR JASON TAYLOR(NOT THEM SPECIFICALLY) WETERANS THAT CAN STILL CONTRIBUTE IN PLACES WE NEED CONTRIBUTING
Posted by: SureShockeR | January 17, 2011 at 08:08 PM
The only thing that sucks is all the negative things being said by you all "so-called fans". Just because Cleveland's stats were comparable to the Dolphins, does not mean this was a bad hire. Look what this guy had to work with in Cleveland. We have a good team with good players, we just did not have a good season. Big names don't equal wins. None of us have any NFL coaching or GM experience, let the professionals do their jobs.
Posted by: Shon | January 17, 2011 at 08:08 PM
Actually, the very fact that almost everyone thinks this would be a bad hire, makes me think that it could be a move in the right direction! Everytime we think we're gonna be good, we suck! And, whenever we think we're gonna suck, we do pretty good! Think about it. Cam Cameron takes over, we say "Alright!". We suck! Culpepper comes to Miami. "Yes!". We suck. We go 1-15! "We're Doomed!". We go 11-5!
And, so...I'd like to thank all of you naysayers for giving me hope for the upcoming season! Lol!

Because next year hasn't happened yet. And sharper image hasn't sent us our crystal balls yet so we don't have the benefit of seeing into the future like some others in here. That's why people are saying give him a chance.
Also because the alternative is bitching and moaning over something that is completely out of our control.

hopefully FINALLY " YOU BLIND FIN FANS" sound like your getting the picture AFTER ALL THESE FREAKING YEARS.........
THIS team is PATHETIC,
now you all better HOPE WE LOSE AS MANY GAMES AS WE CAN NEXT YEAR.,,
we need to get rid of these BOZOS, and get COWHER, and the 1st pick in the draft................

Off the topic: But notice that the Cheatriots haven't won a Super Bowl since they were exposed as cheaters? Interesting. Anyway, I think that this Daboll guy is the best Miami could get. I have a feeling that folks inside the NFL feel that it's a one and done job. BTW, as much as I hate the JETS, I LOVED seeing them beat the Patriots.

Sorry took so long to respond went on lunch break at work . I agree with you but his past record speaks alot as well . He did good at NE and NY . He didnt have much to work with and he has experience with wide recievers and QB so maybe can come up with way to utilize the few weapons we have . Your right he hasnt proven good or bad yet but past record leans to more hope than despair

You are what you are, Daboll was a "settle for" guy. You Daboll defenders will see in due time, then you will be on here complaining that we were as bad or worse than 2010...

What a great idea lets prove to the entire NFL how bad the Dolphins fan base is but refusing to root for our team so instead of the players saying hey the fans are behind us they think srew everybody and we continue to suck til the world ends
Posted by: Richard | January 17, 2011 at 08:18 PM
cowkilla the crazy thing is that you lose either way. If you are upset all year and the guy turns out okay you lose. Because you would've spent the entire year upset over something that didn't happen. And if he's bad you lose because your team will suck. So the stance you're taking only hurts you in the end you know? Think positively, it's better for the mind and soul. It's out of your control, just like other posters opinions. You can't change any of it and you will only drive yourself crazy if you try.
Posted by: Denny | January 17, 2011 at 08:18 PM
UH OH, bankruptcy ALoco? Hope you're not talking about yourself.
Posted by: Denny | January 17, 2011 at 08:20 PM
ALoco I agree there is nothing more dangerous then a Wolf caught in a corner . There will be change . Even if we dont make playoffs you will see some entertaining ball and some gutsy crap
Posted by: Richard | January 17, 2011 at 08:20 PM
Aloco...you have now truly gone insane...playoffs next year..I guess you haven't seen our division rivals play this year..you are absolutely crazy if you think we will even smell the playoffs next year, absurd

DENNY,
Also because the alternative is bitching and moaning over something that is completely out of our control.
AT WHAT POINT DO WE STAND UP AND SAY SOMETHING WHEN ITS TOO LATE?? NOT GETTING ON YOUR CASE BUT AT SOME POINT OUR VOICES SHOULD BE HEARD... JUST LIKE THE FANS DID IN CLEVELAND A COUPLE YEARS BACK!
IS IT REALLY OUT OF OUR CONTROL OR IS IT WHY JUST FIND IT EASIER TO KEEP OUR MOUTHS SHUT
Posted by: SureShockeR | January 17, 2011 at 08:22 PM
Is anyone really surprised Cleveland's Offense sucked, how many Quarterbacks have they gone through the past few years...hmmm sounds familiar oh yeah the Dolphins haven't found a QB either. At least this guy is experienced in dealing with quality (Pats) and not so much quality (cleveland) in terms of players. Stop crying haters, it's going to take more than a oc to make things better in miami
Posted by: I got the answers | January 17, 2011 at 08:22 PM
Denny good post . All the negative talk is pointless. Yes its frustrating when your team loses ( especially at home ) but a true fan loves there team regardless not only when its doing good. Hell most of my fav teams suck ( Mets , Ducks , Celtics) ok maybe not the Celtics :)but I love them all good bad or indifferent
Posted by: Richard | January 17, 2011 at 08:23 PM
DENNY, SHARPER IMAGE WENT TO BANKRUPCY TO STEM ALL THE LOSSES FROM THEIR STOCK DROPPING FROM HIGH 30'S TO A DOLLAR.I AM SURE OF THAT .
