Cam Newton to Dolphins? Hard to believe

Heisman Trophy winner and National Championship winning quarterback Cam Newton announced Thursday evening he is leaving Auburn and will be eligible for this spring's NFL draft. And by this morning the buzz around Dolphins fans will almost certainly be that he's our guy!

The Miami quarterback issue will now definitely get solved because Newton is awesome and athletic and tall (no Chad Henne batted passes) and mobile and awesome and yippie!

Stop.

Newton is a great college football player. His 30 TD passes and 20 running TDs is testament to that. But I should not have to tell you college greatness -- especially when limited to one season -- does not certify NFL anything. It doesn't mean Newton will be great in the NFL. Or good. Or mediocre. Or ... anything.

Here is the truth about Cam Newton. Barring an electrifying spring in which he simply blows away at least one personnel man with full say over his organization and a draft pick before the 14th overall selection, Newton will be there when the Dolphins select in April's first round.

And if Jeff Ireland learned anything from mentor Bill Parcells, he probably will not select Newton. But, but, but why you cry aloud?

Because Newton doesn't fit the profile. He's played one season. That's a red flag or it should be. He's been all about the spread option formation and NFL quarterbacks have to be under center. There will be questions about Newton's footwork because of that system he played under, questions as fundamental as, "Can this guy operate under center?"

There are also questions about whether Newton can read defenses. He didn't do very well in the one or two games he was presented with something other than a single-high safety read.

Was he a product of a great system? No, not entirely. The man is supremely gifted athletically. But is he Josh Freeman all over again? There are serious questions about that.

There are also serious character questions.

This from ESPN's Kevin Weidl:

"Newton was arrested while at Florida on a charge of possessing a stolen laptop computer; there have been rumblings that he had academic issues while with the Gators; and the NCAA investigation surrounding his recruitment out of Blinn College and the fact that his father was attempting to solicit large sums of money in return for Cam attending Mississippi State will all be investigated thoroughly by NFL teams.

The NCAA has cleared Cam Newton of any wrongdoing in the recruitment scandal, but the influence of his father will be a consideration for NFL decision-makers.

Something that bothers me: Newton, his dad, Auburn University and even the NCAA agreed that it would be best if Cecil Newton did not attend the BCS championship game between Auburn and Oregon. Auburn's Athletics Director even released a statement saying Newton was not at the game. And yet, several media outlets shot pictures of the two Newton men, father and son, in a celebratory embrace after the game on the field.

So much for the Newton family word.

The point is there are so many questions and flags here, I would not be surprised if Newton drops like a lead pipe in the draft. And I would not be surprised when the quarterback-hungry Dolphins pass on Newton and select other options.

VOICE OF REASON:

Newton is to stupid to read defenses in the NFL.He will be another Jamarcus Russell, once he gets the money, he wont work to improve. The choices he and his Dad made, shows you how he was raised. No way the Fins draft him.

Just say "No" to little Homey and his chem trails....

Poizen,

Tight End for Cam Newton is interesting but I think he is a QB. He is going to have to prove everyone wrong that he is mature enough to be a NFL QB. He can't do what many QB's do when they come to the NFL which is rely on their college athletic ability carry them because it don't work. It didn't work for rocket arms QBs like Ryan Leaf and Jeff George or athletic freaks like VY and Mike Vick. You have to put the time in if you want to win on the highest level. Vick was a SportsCenter highlight player up until this year when he actually showed he could throw the ball some but eventually got exposed toward the end of the year. 1 year of studying and being a NFL QB off the field can't make up for a lifetime of just relying on athleticism and skill.

No to Newton. But, yes to any available offensive player who can produce day 1. Hard to guarantee allot of money to someone who has such a bust label surrounding him.

I'd package up Langford or Merling & our #1 this year to move up and draft a less risky QB if he's there.

After watching the Parcels video I can see why they picked Henne...he is boring and would never have any of the distractions that come with a celebrity QB like Romo.

But...he cannot manage the game, cannot get his team into the end zone and above all, he does not know his players.

Cam Newton IS a celebrity QB and after watching the game on Monday, did not sway me onto his bandwagon.
Athletic, YES...but so was Jamarcus Russell....enough said!

I personally think Locker is the guy anyways that will stand out as the best QB in the draft... Mallet should be on their radar too

orange in aqua pants. F-U

really bro, I did not say i was a college QB, someone in here asked me where iwas getting my opinion and evaluation from, so I told them.

You are a f'n waste of space anyway, come here talkin crap about other people. Get a life.

LMAO !!!
Did you guys see this statement from most awesome quarterback Cam Newton on ESPN?
I think he knows our own blogger, Home!

Auburn released a statement Thursday night announcing the quarterback's decision following his lone year as a major college starter. Newton led the Tigers to their first national title since 1957 and a 14-0 season with a 22-19 victory over Oregon on Monday night.

"This decision was difficult for me and my family," Newton said, adding that he made it after talking to coach Gene Chizik and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn.

"It's been a blessing for me to be a part of something so great," he said. "Any time you win games it's a big deal, but for this school to win a BCS national championship, what a way to make people happy. Auburn is a special place, just like home."

Heres the thing that scares me.
* Fourth player in NCAA history with 40+ rushing and 40+ passing touchdowns in a career
* Second player in NCAA history with 4,000+ rushing yards and 5,000+ passing yards.
* One of five players in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 1,000 yards in a season. (Accomplished twice, 2006 and 2007)
* Has started a total of 40 games during his 4 year career.
* Starting record of 34-8 is unmatched by any quarterback in WVU history and sixth in the NCAA in most career victories as a starting quarterback.
* Only quarterback to have started and won 4 consecutive bowl games.
* His 4,400+ yards rushing are the most among any quarterback in FBS history
* He has accounted for 100+ touchdowns, which is a Big East record for any position.

* Has a W/L record of 7–2 against top 25 ranked opponents.
* Has a W/L record of 2–1 against top 10 ranked opponents.
* Has a W/L record of 1–0 against top 5 ranked opponents.

Thats pat White.

Yes, obviously im not watching it on a projector in a film room. tape, video, highlights, just different words, they're all the same. I'm not trying to be a draft anyalyst either. I made a very siple observation based on what i was watching. You dont hav to be mel kiper to do that. U still didnt answer my question by the way.

Miami should trade back & then out out of the 1st round all together and acquire a bunch of picks for this year & next year in the process. Then use them to have some leverage in next years draft & multiple high picks like NE does this year.

That's how NE built a winner over the years. We should follow suit. If we are gonna stink this year, might as well stink it all the way up.

With so many holes to fill I wouldn't mind if we took a long look at some of the later round QB's including Colin Kaepernik.I believe a RT is very necessary as well as a blazing fast RB.I would love to get that 2nd round pick back!

Andy, Just an idea that came to mind. Newton ias a hell of an athlete. If he can put it together at the pro level he could be great. Just seems to be more of a project. someone witll take a chance on him. If it is us, then I pray he figures it out. :)

I have seen in most mock drafts they have Miami taking Mark Ingram who I like a lot. I especially like him for this team who wants to be a run first, control the line of scrimmage team. At least get an elite runner to play that game. So that means Miami won't draft Mark Ingram but someone in round 4 or 5 at RB and resign that slow, plodding, ballerina Ronnie Brown. Maybe Ronnie will take off the ankle weights before the games in 2011.

But the QB I see people mocking to Miami is Jake Locker. He didn't have a very good Senior year and I am not saying I am in favor but any thoughts on Locker?

"Any time you win games it's a big deal, but for this school to win a BCS national championship, what a way to make people happy. Auburn is a special place, just like Home."

Just like, "Home"

LMAO !

And we gave white all but about 21 snaps total before people called him a bust.

There is nothing wrong in speculating about the Draft. Personally, I have been wrong so many times that I prefer to read your comments(I don't like to lose. To anybody).

I can't take this article seriously!!!!!

Andy, Ingram is a good RB but is not a speed threat. I'd rather see us acquire Deangelo Williams or Michael Bush IN FA and then draft a RB late for depth.

PAT White is 6 inches shorter and almost 60 lbs lighter than Can Newton

C`mon Man!

I would prefer a smart QB over an athletic one any day. Can you say Manning? Can you say Brady? Can you say Henne...NOT!

"Newton, his dad, Auburn University and even the NCAA agreed that it would be best if Cecil Newton did not attend the BCS championship game between Auburn and Oregon. Auburn's Athletics Director even released a statement saying Newton was not at the game. And yet, several media outlets shot pictures of the two Newton men, father and son, in a celebratory embrace after the game on the field.

Who freaking cares weather his dad was on the field or who said or didn't say his father was going to be there?

I dont care who you are, your parents should be there. The kid was still in college, hes not a pro athlete, so stop picking his family apart like he is.

You cant help yourself with the self made drama you report or make up?

Sparano can ruin Cam Newton's career in just one year.

I don't know if Newton's skills will translate well into the NFL but I do know that I am sick and tired of hearing people compare him to JaMarcus Russell...that to me is just idiotic and baseless.

Some Mock Drafts are now predicting no QBs will be taken in the Top 10. A couple weeks ago I mentioned a couple articles that said Newton was a Mid Third if there was some more actual QB talent out there. Cam Newton certainly was not that impressive out there during the BCS. The only QB I still like is Gabbert. Locker, Mallet and Newton all have serious flaws that will take awhile to fix, if they can be fixed. Again, drop out of first round, gain some picks and get some offensive weapons would be my choice

"

Miami should trade back & then out out of the 1st round all together and acquire a bunch of picks for this year & next year in the process. Then use them to have some leverage in next years draft & multiple high picks like NE does this year.

That's how NE built a winner over the years. We should follow suit. If we are gonna stink this year, might as well stink it all the way up.

Our fans and reporters dont have the patience to do this.

Speaking of qualifications
Other than taking the job cuz it paid peanuts

What r Armandos qualifications to keep hating on Everything Dolphins & promoting suck wind time wasting Sophomoric Latino Hyena radio show?

... just saying

and yes there were obvious chemtrails in Broward yesterday bout 4:30 and were in the sky til sunset

U Idiots!

gabbert is 6'5 210 dude is going to break just like pat white if he doesn't start working out

I am not saying I would want either QB but, if I was looking for a Cam Newton, I would probably go Vince Young similar type QB but with NFL game experience. If they (Titans) release him in March we would not lose a draft pick either.

Now, now, Joe, trade Kendall Langford? I might suck at predicting good future players but I know who is good NOW.

I'd package up Langford or Merling & our #1 this year to move up and draft a less risky QB if he's there.

You would trade away one of the few working parts on this team and our 15th to move up a few spots for a qb we might have drop to us at 15?

Sounds like the same crap we did last year. Stop messing with stuff that aint broke

Say no to Mallet and Newton. Both have major character issues. Mallets too big and has problems re-setting his feet after moving in the pocket which will be a disaster for an nfl qb. Locker has too much bust potential. Gabbert is the safest qb choice in this draft. We can't afford another bust.

Guys...we pay talent scouts plenty of $$ to evaluate college QB's to see if they have what it takes to play at the highest level.

We are all "armchair quarterbacks", and while we may THINK Cam Newton has the goods, we lack all the data and hard intel to back our claims.

There is only so much info you can gleen from a TV screen.

Let the talent scouts earn their keep and in my humble opinion, I believe they will do the right thing and PASS on Newton.

Guess what all u chumps also said Tebow would not make it in the NFL and would be taken in 3rd round or later

Also said he is more like a half back

See u r so F!@#ing jealous when some one else does good and id a good person!

Tebow only threw for almost 10,000 YDs as Florida Gator

Yet u chumps say he cannot throw

Save your jealous breathe for your inflatable blow up date

Cam Newton Will Be A Miami Dolphin
Period

Pat White should never have been even tried at QB he could've done something at WR i thought but I guess he was a worthless pick. Still pretty shocking we even went after him a year after we took Henne in the same round

(1) NCAA and college football as a whole make millions of dollars off of their sudent athletes (2) Parcells makes millions for advising, hooking up his jersey buddies (qualified or not), and for jumping ship....(right or wrong-not for me to judge) the kid's father was shopping him around....so therefore, according to the ncaa and auburn, the kid's father has to stop being a dad and not attend the heisman or the championsip game...once in a lifetime achievements and the man that intoduced him and taught him the sport, is not allowed to share it with his boy.....wow!!!!! what am i missing here???

Oh yeah u thought this QB would suck inthe NFL also
Didn`t U Armando

Funny Thing
Home thought Tebow would be just fine!

On July 29, 2010, Tebow signed a five-year contract with the Broncos that had a base value of $11.25 million (he can make as much as $33 million through certain performance-based incentives). The contract also included $8.7 million guaranteed.[94]

On October 17, 2010, Tebow scored his first NFL touchdown, which was a five-yard running play against the New York phooking Jets. On November 14, 2010, Tebow threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Larsen on his first career NFL pass attempt, as part of a 49-29 home victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. He also added a one-yard rushing touchdown in the game. His performance against the Chiefs earned him his first Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week honor.

Tebow started his first NFL game on December 19, 2010, which was a 39-23 road loss to the Oakland Raiders. Tebow completed eight of 16 passes for 138 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown pass. He also rushed for 78 yards, 40 of which came on a touchdown run in the first quarter of the game. It was the longest touchdown run for a quarterback in Broncos history and the longest touchdown run in NFL history for a quarterback in his first start. Tebow became just the third quarterback in NFL history to throw for a touchdown of 30 or more yards and run for a touchdown of 40 or more yards in the same game.[99] He finished the game with a 100.5 passer rating, the highest ever in team history for a professional debut.

Tebow's first career victory came in his second start on December 26, 2010. The Broncos defeated the Houston Texans, 24-23, in Denver. Tebow helped rally the Broncos from a 17-0 deficit at halftime, as he finished the game with 308 passing yards and one touchdown pass. He also added a fourth quarter rushing touchdown, which capped the comeback.[100] Tebow received his second Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week honor following his performance.

Home knows Football
Home knows what the Dolphins need
Home was right on Marshall & Dansby
Home WILL be right on Miami Dolphins QB Cam Newton

Oh YEAH!

Tebow finished his rookie season playing sparingly in six games as a back-up (primarily on plays involving the wild horse formation, which is Denver's variation of the wildcat formation) before starting the last three games of the Broncos' season. He threw for a total of 654 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. He also rushed for 227 yards and six touchdowns. Tebow became the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for a touchdown in each of his first three career starts.
Statistics

Home, Newton looked like garbage in the biggest game of his career. He has never worked from under center and has footwork and accuracy issues. We don't need a project and the Dolphins won't wait 3 years for this guy to be nfl ready when their jobs are depending on their record next season. Wake up would ya. Stick to talking about chemtrails.

Home, are you telling us that Tebow has "made it" in the NFL already? He made it to the NFL but I think the jury is still out.I am not doubting him and I never have I just think it is still a little premature to say he "made it"

Oscar & Corners,

That's why it makes perfect sense to trade 1 of them. Both contracts are up next year & we have Odrick in line. Miami won't wind up resigning both of them & you already have their replacement on the roster. It makes PERFECT sense.

Also, let's not go crazy here & think Merling or Langford are anything spectacular. They are adequate DE's. That isn't saying allot. Considering Dline is the only area of depth on this team, you use it to get what you lack.

You have a glut of DE's & no QB, RB, or WR. If there is a good QB prospect worth taking at 9-14 in the 1st that you're sold on, you trade one of those guys. No Doubt.

sammy29...ok, we'll let the jamarcus russell comments take a rest.

how about Pat White or Todd Marinovich and Dan McGwire (1991) or Tim Couch and Cade McNown (1999)or Ryan Leaf, or Akili Smith.

Great college QB's who FAILED once they hit the NFL.

Newton is a GAMBLE...plain and simple.

the only reason its hard to believe they will draft Cam Newton is becuz of their track record of never picking up anyone with superior offensive talent... this article is starting to make sense... Same reason we didn't draft Dez Bryant when he was obviously the most talented player on the board. Wonder what Ireland will spew about needing another DLine or LB such a parcell cronie

I agree with Ron Wolf that teams should draft at least one QB every year.

Armando,

Who should we draft ????

Home...we love u and your insanely quirky comments, but you are WRONG on the Cam Newton issue.

Flacco was a gamble and now look at him he seems to have payed off for the Ravens

Poizen,

Yeah He is a super athlete. I wouldn't be mad if Miami picked him. Playing it safe has gotten Miami to 7-9 in back to back seasons and one abberation/Wild Cat season. I am not saying Newton is my pick but just his potential alone is 1st round worthy. At 15 there aren't too many sure fire can't misses.

In order I would take:

Mark Ingram RB Alabama - complete 3 down back, I compare him to Edgerrin James, Armando told me Edge had a lot more speed yet Edge had like only a handful of 20 plus runs in his career but was still elite.

Julio Jones WR Alabama - just a coincidene 2 Bama guys not a Bama fan. He isn't a true speed WR but is fast enough. You put him on one side and Marshall on the other amd that would be the best WR combo since Duper and Clayton in Miami.

Von Miller OLB Texas A&M - Cam Wake is a beast but finished the season sackless in his last 2 games. He needs someone across from him who can be single blocking and IMO Misi has no move outside of a bull rush that don't work. Miller is the best pass rushing OLB in the draft IMO and although Miami needs offense they also suck enough to take BPA. Miller probably will be long gone.

Cam Newton - I don't think there is a chance in hell Miami takes a project QB with the coach and GM's rear on the line but maybe Ross's good buddy Peterson chimes in and tells him to make them take him. I would take a chance on super athlete like Newton and never look back. Playing it safe has gotten Miami no where.

After Newton I like Mallet and Locker and wouldn't oppose to either because of the need at QB but just what I would want with the previous 4.

NHFINSFAN, I must have gave you the impression that I was all for us drafting him....I am not.I just think it is unfair to compare him to a piece of dirt like JaMarcus Russell just because he is a big athletic QB...I think size and athleticism is where the comparisons should end.

I agree with Dave; they try to move down to pick up that 2nd round pick they lost and select an OL. If not they select a speed WR if its a value pick. I do like the idea of maybe trading Henne to Denver for Orton. Not sure how that would work or if Denver would be interested. Wonder what we would have to give up though. We also need speed at the RB position as well.

Ingram can't carry more than 15 times a game he is not a 3 down back

sammy29...I stand corrected and we both agree that J. Russell is a piece of trash.

okay, enough. newton has proven nothing. one year is nothing and sanchez is being protected by the oline of jets and not better than henne. if we are calling for henne's head and need qb we do it with kevin kolb or ryan mallet. enough of this hype talk of a qb that reminds me of tebow. tebow= excellent qb in college and long developmental project in nfl and even elway is considering getting a new qb for future and it ain't tebow folks! so, i will sit back and let the guys who get paid to make these decisions draft our team. some of you people just absolutely crack me up. thank god you are not running this team b/c we would go 0-16 then.

you position Josh freeman as a failure? I'd take him over Robohenne in a flash.

Who cares if his dad wanted to see his son play in the limelight? Only you, who would apparently rather have the Ginn family!

Newton is a better colleg QB than Josh Freeman was. He is a better athlete than Freeman.

He won't be an immediate starter in the NFL, but there is every reason to believe he can be an excellent NFL QB.

BTW - Sam Bradford played in the spread. He's been okay so far.

If Newton is available, Miami should draft him. He'll be the best talent on the board. And while there may be some concerns about his father, his teammates at Auburn seemed to love the guy and support him. And the guy won games. Time and again he was the difference during the season for Auburn. He's an enormous athletic talent who fits the size and arm strength mold for a franchise NFL QB and he's a winner - JUCO national title at Blinn, BCS championship at Auburn. If he's available, Newton should be Miami's choice.

OK, Joe, but if you are going to trade any of those two then, at this particular time although I think he has a lot of potential, trade Merling.

The talent scouts that get paid so much to evaluate talent sure S@#$ the bed year in and year out. This is the worst year in a long time to draft a QB and it looks like we may have to.Hopefully we get luck this time.

Joe S,

I like Michael Bush a lot too. DeAngelo is coming off a foot injury and might command top dollars in FA. I don't see Miami breaking the bank in FA again this year.

No matter the case they need to draft a RB at some point but knowing how bad this front office is they probably draft a RB in rounds 4 or 5 and keep Ronnie and his 3.6 average and falling after initial contact. (WATCH OUT RONNIE A MAC TRUCK IS COMING!! Oh no that is only 185 lb rookie Joe Haden pushing you around).

Big mistake to draft this guy. Let someone else make a mistake on him. We need to start HITTING on some of our picks, inside of missing all the time. Hit on a safer pick like a RB, a WR or an OL. These are all needs on our team amd we'd do well to add one.

The ideal situation is to trade back and get the extra second round pick but if we can't then we take the best player available but not QB. If you take Newton then you're tied to this guy for the next 4-5 years. We need to start getting these picks right and there's too much uncertainty surrounding him.

Chris in 623, what are they saying in Arizona? Will the Cards draft a QB or trade for a vet like McNabb?

Let's be patient and see how Newton does in both the combines and on the wonderlick.

...never, ever underestimate the value of the wonderlick score.

Tim Tebow is the starting QB for the awesome NFL Denver Broncos franchise

still jealous?
