Cam Newton to Dolphins? Hard to believe

Heisman Trophy winner and National Championship winning quarterback Cam Newton announced Thursday evening he is leaving Auburn and will be eligible for this spring's NFL draft. And by this morning the buzz around Dolphins fans will almost certainly be that he's our guy!

The Miami quarterback issue will now definitely get solved because Newton is awesome and athletic and tall (no Chad Henne batted passes) and mobile and awesome and yippie!

Stop.

Newton is a great college football player. His 30 TD passes and 20 running TDs is testament to that. But I should not have to tell you college greatness -- especially when limited to one season -- does not certify NFL anything. It doesn't mean Newton will be great in the NFL. Or good. Or mediocre. Or ... anything.

Here is the truth about Cam Newton. Barring an electrifying spring in which he simply blows away at least one personnel man with full say over his organization and a draft pick before the 14th overall selection, Newton will be there when the Dolphins select in April's first round.

And if Jeff Ireland learned anything from mentor Bill Parcells, he probably will not select Newton. But, but, but why you cry aloud?

Because Newton doesn't fit the profile. He's played one season. That's a red flag or it should be. He's been all about the spread option formation and NFL quarterbacks have to be under center. There will be questions about Newton's footwork because of that system he played under, questions as fundamental as, "Can this guy operate under center?"

There are also questions about whether Newton can read defenses. He didn't do very well in the one or two games he was presented with something other than a single-high safety read.

Was he a product of a great system? No, not entirely. The man is supremely gifted athletically. But is he Josh Freeman all over again? There are serious questions about that.

There are also serious character questions.

This from ESPN's Kevin Weidl:

"Newton was arrested while at Florida on a charge of possessing a stolen laptop computer; there have been rumblings that he had academic issues while with the Gators; and the NCAA investigation surrounding his recruitment out of Blinn College and the fact that his father was attempting to solicit large sums of money in return for Cam attending Mississippi State will all be investigated thoroughly by NFL teams.

The NCAA has cleared Cam Newton of any wrongdoing in the recruitment scandal, but the influence of his father will be a consideration for NFL decision-makers.

Something that bothers me: Newton, his dad, Auburn University and even the NCAA agreed that it would be best if Cecil Newton did not attend the BCS championship game between Auburn and Oregon. Auburn's Athletics Director even released a statement saying Newton was not at the game. And yet, several media outlets shot pictures of the two Newton men, father and son, in a celebratory embrace after the game on the field.

So much for the Newton family word.

The point is there are so many questions and flags here, I would not be surprised if Newton drops like a lead pipe in the draft. And I would not be surprised when the quarterback-hungry Dolphins pass on Newton and select other options.

I know.

Trade Up And Get Nick Fairly! LOL...........

PAT DEVLIN!!! come this upcoming combine, i guarantee this kid shoots up in QB rankings. Has good size and a quick accurate release. Very mobile too.

Here is a list of the teams picking ahead of us who need a QB.

1. Carolina
3. Buffalo
5. Arizona
7. San Fran
8. Tennessee
10. Washington
12. Minnesota

Three of those teams will probably trade for Kolb, Orton, or Young if there is a new bargaining agreement. If there is no new agreement, you'll likely see Mallett, Newton, and possiblly Gabbert all gone by the 15th pick.

How is the RB Class this year? WR's?

No Joe, actually the dumbest statements come from out of town Fuks like you who I have to read day after day. The little biatches who don't spend a penny on this team and cry about the fact their DirecTv. Honestly, I've said it before and I will say it again. If you don't live here and have season tickets or don't go to the game, ur opinion means shyt if all ur going to do is cry and whine like a little girl all day. Now why dont u grab a shovel and do something in that God Forbidden ShytHole of a city called NY. And if u really wanna help keep all ur stinkin fukin NY neighbors and their Democratic policies out of my state. Thks and I hope u freeze ur ass off and it snows all winter

Ladies & gentleman, we have just witnessed an outburts by a disgruntled, menopausal woman. Need we see MORE evidence? LMAO

Look Barbara, I know this tage in your life is tough but take a breather, take your metamucil & get your panties out of a knot. It's gonna be OK.

There is another QB that can be picked up in later rounds that is just as good if not better that newton. Collin Kapernik from Nevada. This is who the phins should select and save their first round for a solid RB.

Ha!

bobbyd12 = Major DHead with less brains. Miami is a pit, I've lived there...I like the fins but the city sucks, a bunch of different ethnic groups that all hate each other, nobody gets along, witness this doosh boobbyd. And nope just because he is foolish enough to support a losing team with his money doesn't make his opinion any more valuable, it only makes him look dumber, if that is possible.

I think the RB in illinois looked pretty good, weird name, can't think of it right now. I think we could sign Ronnie Brown and get exactly the same if not more out of him than Ingram.

I am to lazy to look up this guys name right now.

Joe...Sporano will evolve or get fired.....should make for intresting TV.....either way WE THE FANS WIN.....

We will either have an exciting team that scores points AND makes the playoffs.....or.....

We will get a NEW coach next year and we can watch the drama unfold again.....

WIN-WIN!

It seems to me there a lot of QB prospects this year. Always the more the better. Just saying.

boobyd didn't belittle everyone when they sent their condolences when his father died. i figured that might set him straight a bit but nope, he is back to his highly arrogant and ignorant self.

Agreed - Plain stupid is plain smart here...

Look guys, they guy that came here trying to Mock me started all this name calling crap. dont feed into it.

Lets keep the blog about football and not personal attacks. We are all here to support the Dolphins.

Even i bought into the name calling. I'ts not getting anyone anywhere.

Kris...shhhhhhhhhh, not too loud. Bobby may step out of la la land to tell you what an idiot & moron you are.

Bobbyd12,

What are saying? Anyone who cant afford season tickets should not be allowed to be Dolphin fans?

Bobby, it great for those who are fortunate enough to have the extra income to dump into season tickets. Some are less fortunate in life than you.

I give you all the kudos in the world that through your hard work you have earned this position in life and able to enjoy that which some can not. But for some when it comes down to paying the mortgage or purchasing season tickets, the mortgage is the major priority.

Does this mean that they should be considered less of a fan than the super rich like you? If you were the super rich fan that youre coming accross as being. Why dont you just volunteer to purchase 10 season tickets for the less fortunate fan.

If every super rich blow hard fan like you did that there would be standing room only at every home game. If super rich guys like you arent willing to show that kind of super loyalty to the team. Then you're no better than diehard super wind bags too.

Guess this is what our me-me-me society has come too.

OK Guy's, The Cuban has arrived back in the city so nice they named it twice, What has been going on in here?????

What up tho'? (LeVar Arrington's salutation)

I'm tired of the QB debate, so not getting into it today.

But did anyone else see Schefter's article on espn.com? Talks about how Tomlin was a finalist for the HC job with Cam Cameron that year. Not going to say anything would have been different (that's speculation, but I think what they've done since gives you an idea).

I wasn't aware we could have had Tomlin. CRAZY! So, we passed on Tomlin, Brees, Ryan, Santonio Holmes (we could have gotten him for cheap last year), and countless others.

Whomever we draft (especially with the #1 pick) doesn't really matter, or is only secondary, to the fact that we can't be WRONG! The guy drafted at #17 CAN'T wind up being one of the best in the NFL, while we get somebody solid, but not a game-changer, and not as good as someone drafted after.

I won't be looking at our draft this season and seeing if we did good JUST by the play of our guy. I'll be looking at who was drafted afterwards, and did Ireland get the BEST guy available. When I mean "best", I mean game-changer.

I guess an OL guy can be a game-changer if he leads to us having one of the best run games in the NFL, but usually game-changers are RB, WR, QB.

And I know it's not an exact science, just cause a guy is good on one team doesn't mean he'll be that good on another, but it's a good start. That's what Ireland should and will be graded on to see if he deserves to stay any longer.

Someone should tell Barabara(Bobby) that there are probably more Dolphin fans in the NY area than there are in Miami.

Anyone who claims to be a fan, yet attempts to diss his own fan base with childish antics, is a waste of good sperm.

Bobby, I can't comment on all the anger you have stirred up here,

Your comment responding to the "He was succesful in college he will be succesful in the pros" was a little weird I agree.

But the personal attacks are a little rough.

thanks for your support from the clown atttacking me tho, I appreciate it.

whats up DC...

Guy's do you think Ireland will ask Childress what his mother did for a living????

2010 stats:

Collin Kaepernick had 3,022 yards and 21 TDs

Cam Newton had 2854 yards and 30 TDs

Both are 6-6 and are duel threats.. the only difference is that kap. had done proven himself for all four years of college...not a one year wonder.

Cuban, nice!!

How would he phrase that one. Was your mother a WW1 Cannon blower?

Poizen, Bobby has probably just been out in the Miami sun too long today. Don't take him too seriously, nobody else does.

I know nothing about Kaepernick. Nice numbers though!

Hey, Poizen, don't get these suckas get you down man. You've got good opinions and they're valued, so forget the enemies you make here (I've made some, everyone makes a few if you're on the blog enough).

Fight, fight! White and a white! The white guy wins and we all jump in! LOL............

Good attitude, Bobby. Some of us on here are former residents of Miami (i.e. me), alot of out of towners have many different types of connections to the city or team. You're sorely mistaken if you think the true passionate fans only reside in S. Fla.

And btw, some of us also enjoy winter up here in blue state heaven. See you on the slopes

People keep bringing up that Julio Jones kid (the WR from 'bama right)? Is he fast? I know the kid can catch and has great YAC, but I wasn't aware of his speed. Is he a speedster?

JHON FOX IS SAYING A LOT OF GOOD STUFF ABOUT TEBOW AND THAT MAKES ORTON MAD .

IRELAND SHOULD BE WORKING HARD TO GET ORTON NOT JUST SITTING IN HIS OFFICE DRINKING COFFE AND EATING GARLIC BREAD .

Garbage, based on what we see during home games, I think it's pretty clear that the really passionate fans aren't in S. Fla.

The most passionate S. Fla fans are Jets fans who take over the stadium & make more noise than Dolphin fans.

Is there a 12 Step Program for "OVERLY ADDICTED" FANS? Company headquarters should be erected in Miami!

It's glorified backyard football we all played as kids. Except for guys actually now get paid mega millions to play. Geesh guys get a grip!

Guy's, Who will you be Rooting for this weekend, The big game being the Pats VS Jets, I hate to root for the jets but if they dont take it to the pats it could be a long few years and more championships for billy and Tommy, What gets me about that team is this was supposed to be a rebuilding year for them.... They have 6 picks in the first 3 rounds next year too, they could winn another 2 or 3 trophies in the next 6 years... How do they do it???? WITCH CRAFT I guess....

Ha!

kris,

You need to take a pill, man! We don't agree on things therefore the mature way to handle it is to get into name-calling? Pretty mature, man!!

You think we only win by drafting a QB in the first round, I disagree. There are countless examples of that around the league.

I have an issue when your owner starts getting involved in the personnel side of things and starts dictating what style of offence is going to played and the guy knows NOTHING about the game. He might have been a successful business guy but he's accomplished NOTHING in the football world! There are countless examples around the league of owners who have tried to do this, with little or no success.....see Synder, Davis and Jones. There is NOTHING to be gained by an owner at the beginning of January saying 'we are going to play a more open brand of football next year'. Who is he trying to kid? As things stand right now we don't have the personnel for this. Our receivers aren't quick enough, our line can't protect enough, we can't run the ball and our QB is having trouble reading defences.

Let's do the talking ON THE FIELD, instead of this false hope that the owner wants to spout on January 5th, when we don't even have an OC in place and we have NO idea what kind of offence we are trying to run. I'm not a fan of the owner and I think we'll see pretty quickly this guy is a clown and doesn't know how to be a successful owner in the NFL.

OK, if I have an opinion about that kris, or do you want to get into name-calling again?

ill agree with the post. i dont want newton. id take a shot on mallet or gabbert though. but no way on newton. locker is my first choice but im sure he will be gone

Booby is a dooosh and a pr!ck. This isn't new. He is a Parcells/Giants fan that lives in Miami. And he's a civil servant. He doesn't make that much $. In fact, the fact he WASTES what little $ he does make to watch this pathetic team play makes him an even bigger idiot.

With that said. Do we have an iffensive coordinator yet?!

Cuban, I can't see NE losing this weekend. I also think the Pack, Chicago & Steelers will win.

That would set up 2 very good Championship games.

That's what got us in this personnnel situation now; fitting Parcel's and Ireland's profile. Merling, Odrick, S. Smith, P. White, and on, and on, and on. Get Newton!!!!!!!!!!!

I will root for the Jets based on my bias against Bill Belichick.

I saw Kaepernick play a couple times this year, he's a real nice college player, but he's in the VY, Newton mold. It's just not a recipe for success in the NFL. Even Vick who is quicker and faster than all those guys was limping around by the end of the year. He was really beat up. And now you're looking at an 18 game season. Classic pocket passer is the way to go

If I'm not mistaken VY was fantastic his first couple of seasons until he lost his mind...

im not excited about childress. he might even try and bring old ass mcnaab. guessin childress knows sparano is on borrowed time and would have shot at head coach, lets hope not

I think it's a mistake when guys think a guy was successful in College that it automatically transfers over to the pro game. There's been a long list of former Heisman trophy QB's who couldn't cut it in the pros and for my money the jury is still out on Tim Tebow. If you are going to draft one of these guys you've got to make damn certain they are going to be successful because being wrong can set your franchise back for years.

DONAVON MCNABB evryone!! Draft a rookie qb and let him develop for 2-3 years uner McNabb. McNabb is the answer for this team, he can take us to the playoffs with the talent we have, he has a few good years left in him, and you draft one of the young QBs coming out and let Donavon guide him into the starting postion.

GO PATS GO PATS GO PATS GO PATS.

I hate the Jets more than any other team in sports.

Used to be from NY. :)

I would like to see Baltimore win, because I think they have the best chance to beat the Pats after the Pats embarrass the Jets.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste.......

dolphin101

I like the name, here is the thing about McNabb. He went to Washington where they had a real solid O-line, and he actually had stats worse than Henne's.

then he was outplayed by Grossman with the same team, I am not sure about him anymore, just my 2 cents there.

VY was never that great of a passer. Those types will win you some games because they are athletic freaks, but that type of play only gets you so far. What running QB has had real post season success? I cant think of one. Guys like Steve Young and Steve McNair turned themselves into good pocket passers and then had success. But they were passers 1st, run if needed.

I meant to say I see the Jets losing.

Man, The blowing cannons in WWI was much funnier in my head I guess... I got crickets here.

mcnaab is garbage now. old and out of shape

Poizen, No, it was good......

Cuban, I want the Falcons and Seattle (so we can feel good about our 7-9 record), Pats and Steelers.

Nah, Joe, if you are sure about something, write it down.

i hate the Pats, but, not nearly as much as the Jets...Of course, I meet more Pats fans in Orlando, but, still hate the Jets...I suppose Pats this week, but, hope they lose out. I'm on the Seahawks wagon. 7-9 to the SB!

I think M. Vick is trying mighty hard to become a pocket passer. Lookout!

Oscar, I'm sure. Pats, Bears, Packers & Steelers win.
