Cam Newton to Dolphins? Hard to believe

Heisman Trophy winner and National Championship winning quarterback Cam Newton announced Thursday evening he is leaving Auburn and will be eligible for this spring's NFL draft. And by this morning the buzz around Dolphins fans will almost certainly be that he's our guy!

The Miami quarterback issue will now definitely get solved because Newton is awesome and athletic and tall (no Chad Henne batted passes) and mobile and awesome and yippie!

Stop.

Newton is a great college football player. His 30 TD passes and 20 running TDs is testament to that. But I should not have to tell you college greatness -- especially when limited to one season -- does not certify NFL anything. It doesn't mean Newton will be great in the NFL. Or good. Or mediocre. Or ... anything.

Here is the truth about Cam Newton. Barring an electrifying spring in which he simply blows away at least one personnel man with full say over his organization and a draft pick before the 14th overall selection, Newton will be there when the Dolphins select in April's first round.

And if Jeff Ireland learned anything from mentor Bill Parcells, he probably will not select Newton. But, but, but why you cry aloud?

Because Newton doesn't fit the profile. He's played one season. That's a red flag or it should be. He's been all about the spread option formation and NFL quarterbacks have to be under center. There will be questions about Newton's footwork because of that system he played under, questions as fundamental as, "Can this guy operate under center?"

There are also questions about whether Newton can read defenses. He didn't do very well in the one or two games he was presented with something other than a single-high safety read.

Was he a product of a great system? No, not entirely. The man is supremely gifted athletically. But is he Josh Freeman all over again? There are serious questions about that.

There are also serious character questions.

This from ESPN's Kevin Weidl:

"Newton was arrested while at Florida on a charge of possessing a stolen laptop computer; there have been rumblings that he had academic issues while with the Gators; and the NCAA investigation surrounding his recruitment out of Blinn College and the fact that his father was attempting to solicit large sums of money in return for Cam attending Mississippi State will all be investigated thoroughly by NFL teams.

The NCAA has cleared Cam Newton of any wrongdoing in the recruitment scandal, but the influence of his father will be a consideration for NFL decision-makers.

Something that bothers me: Newton, his dad, Auburn University and even the NCAA agreed that it would be best if Cecil Newton did not attend the BCS championship game between Auburn and Oregon. Auburn's Athletics Director even released a statement saying Newton was not at the game. And yet, several media outlets shot pictures of the two Newton men, father and son, in a celebratory embrace after the game on the field.

So much for the Newton family word.

The point is there are so many questions and flags here, I would not be surprised if Newton drops like a lead pipe in the draft. And I would not be surprised when the quarterback-hungry Dolphins pass on Newton and select other options.

Can any of the NFC teams beat any of the AFC teams???? Pats,Jets,Ravins and steelers I think could beat any of the NFC guys....

NFC. I want Green bay and Seattle.

Not sure why Seattle.

Green Bay because I would love to See Rogers start to help eclipse Favretard.

McNabb is a step backwards.

To the point of "we need to pick a QB in the 1st round", (notably Kris), there is no logic in that. Heres QB's picked in round 1 since 1990:

jeff george, andre ware, dan mcgwire, marinavich, klingler, tommy maddox, rick mirer, bledsoe

shuler, dilfer, mcnair, k. collins, j. druckenmiller, manning, leaf, couch

akili smith, mcnabb, mcnown, culpepper, pennington, vick, carr

harrington, ramsey, palmer, leftwich, boller, grossman, losman

eli, rivers, rapistberger, alex smith, a rodgers, j campbell, cutler

leinart, VY, jamarcus, quinn, flacco, m ryan, sanchez, stafford, frreman, bradford, tebow more to come...

bobbyd, gotta control those anger issues. no need to attack anyone;everyone here has a diiferent opinion on how to make our team better. there are a few guys on here who are very touchy.

Mallet>Newton

C'mon, armando!!! Really with the parcells video, are you seriously trying to make us feel worse for keeping the family tree alive here in miami for another year. And dont be surprised if they stray away from their usual pro-typical approach in drafting players now that the grandfather clock(Parcells) has been broken, considering that sparanos and most likely irelands extensions hinge on what this team does next year....which as of now wont be anything but the status qou from their last two years!!!!

Go out and get Vince Young the man just needs to get away from Fischer who was playing mind games with him and all he did was went 30-17 and dam near carried his team to the show.He has the size the running ability and can throw come on man you fools need to wake up.Then the Dolphins on a great running back at #15 and working on the offensive line. And please Mr.Ross keep Coach Nolan around and get him another linebacker next to Dansby.

OK, Joe. I'm not sure of any of them. But of the two that interest me I am more sure of Pittsgurgh than of NE.

I said I wouldn't enter this convo today, but can't help myself.

Garbage, I think you just made kris' case. 12 out of the last 19 have been pretty good QBs in this league. That's 63% chance of landing a very good - franchise QB. I think a logical case can be made from that list to picking a QB in Round 1.

Now if you said, "THIS YEAR," then maybe other factors would play into why a QB pick in Round 1 would be too unreliable since we need a sure thing. But, I see plenty of logic in picking a 1st-rounder just from the last 3 lines of your list.

thats 48 qb's. Leaving out the most recent 5 drafted in the last 2 years because of small sample size, that leaves 43 with a decent body of work.

Of that 43, about 15 (give or take 1) would qualify as either above average or pro bowl. That means if you drafted a QB in the 1st round in the last 20 years, you had about a 35% chance of that QB being above average.

Even if you throw in the replacement level/mediocre guys, you're only up to 50%

Pick the right guy. Not (necessarily) the 1st round guy

I dont like the fact that Vince young quit on his team like 2 years ago, then had theat nervous breakdown.

Last year he was pissed about fisher, but did not act professional at all.

It seems if things don't go his way he implodes.

Oscar, I'm sure of them in my own mind. I certainly wouldn't take those bets to Vegas as a sure thing lol

I just can't bring myself to root or want to see the Jets win.

Everyone wanted Brady Quinn if I recall?

I am out, have a good night and good weekend all.

Even if you wanna throw sanchez, freeman and bradford in there, its still well under a 50/50 proposition. Stafford and tebow are unknowns at this point

That percentage would be even higher DC if we compared those named to QBS miami has drafted/or brought in since the golden boy marino....

MY COUSIN CLOROX JOHNSON BE PLAYIN FOR MIAMI NEXT YEAR. HE GOOD.

I think the Dolphins have whiffed enough on QBs to learn their lesson when it comes to guys like Newton (or I would hope). They need to start looking for QBs that aren't just "athletically gifted" but guys that are "smart" and "NFL-ready." I agree they should draft a QB this year if they can find one with lots of potential in the later rounds but I don't think this crop of QBs is worth a high pick. I'd much rather see them sign McNabb in the off-season and have him, Henne and Thigpen battle it out in training camp. See if any one of them can become "THE MAN" next season and if not, do whatever it takes to get Andrew Luck in the 2012 NFL Draft.

lol Garbage, why leave out the most recent 5. Sanchez made the Playoff's EACH year he's been in the league. That's enough for me. If we can draft a QB to take us to 2 playoffs, I think he's worth it no matter what else he does (sure beats any of the other #1 picks we've taken for the last decade).

Also, Freeman, Stafford, Bradford haven't shown you enough to know they are franchise QBs for their teams? These guy TOTALLY turned around their programs, so, that's enough for me.

That's why Bellichick says stats are for sissies, you can make them say whatever you want, just depends how you manipulate them.

Armando your crazy,Cam Newton is going to be a great Qb,at the end of the day winning is all that matters and he did it 2 years in a row even though one year at jc.Our fans have it all wrong we need to fix our offensive line first.Pick Nate Solder first,Move him to right tackle and move Carey over to guard, also put Incognito at center with Jerry and Long our line is set.In the third round we can take a flyer on Colin Kaepernick Qb Nevada{check him out},and bring in a vet to compete with Henne.from there we can use the rest of our picks on offensive speed RB,TE,and Wr

Garbage, your final point was the right one. We need the right guy this year and every year onward. But especially this year for lots of reasons. And, unfortunately (since I'm a draft a QB guy), that might not be the best option, I'm coming to believe that.

I remember 2 or 3 years ago VY impressed me with how he threw the ball, but with all these other issues around him, who knows? I think in a way in present day football we also need psychologists to evaluate players and coaches and owners. Too much pressure?

DC, Rick Mirer was rookie of the year. How'd that work out?

I agree with you, I think those 3 look good. I'm simply counting guys with a larger sample size. And if you take those 3, you have to take tebow and stafford. neither would qualify as above average at this point, so it doesnt inflate the %'s very much

LOL greg z.....lot of NY Dolphin experts seem to have it all figured out.

Teresopolis, Brazil (CNN) -- It was like a tsunami from the sky in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro state as floodwater gushed through hill towns and giant boulders catapulted from hillsides, instantly crushing cars and houses.

At least 517 people have been killed and another 10,000 people living in what used to be picturesque mountain towns popular with tourists have been affected by the torrential rains that began at the start of the year, civil defense authorities told the official Agencia Brasil news agency.

Rescuers have not been able to reach some hard-hit areas and many more people are feared dead, the agency said.

Conditions were so treacherous that rescue teams called it quits Thursday night and resumed their search and recovery work Friday morning, their efforts have been hampered by more rain falling overnight. The rain is predicted to continue for several days in areas already submerged in water or slathered with mud.

Cam Newton MIGHT be great in the pros. He also might be a total dud.

People need to stop saying a guy "Will" be this or that, unless their last name is Manning or Elway. I'd bet there's been 100 other guys you thought were going to be great, too, who are totally forgotten today.

thanks DB for your nice post about the west offense last night ,thank you ..

How many drafted QB's came from losing college programs? Obviously, a guy good enough to be drafted probably was a lot better than 90% of the players around him and probably oversaw a lot of winning games against inferior opponents.

Has absolutely no bearing on winning at the next level, though.

OK, Joe.

We definately need to get more Offensive line help, but we also desperately need a quicker, up start RB also, Tyron Smith and Nate Solder, and Demarcus Love should see plenty of attention this coming draft year if miami is smart at in that department,

RBS are interesting also, shane Vereen , Ingram, and williams from VT are all good prospects in that regards, I also believe miami should look at De-Angelo Williams from carolina when he becomes a free agent this year.

If Mallet or Locker arent available, then I would like to see those mentioned above be picked up or at least considered aggressively becuase if you cant run the football, we cant have an effective style of offense if we even know what that is anymore with this regime!!!!

I foresee Rex Ryan smelling de-feet Sunday.

Newton is not right from the neck up to be a great NFL QB. Drafttek.com does not even have him as the #1 QB in the draft. Right now they have their #1 QB as Ryan Mallett, 6'6", 238lbs., Arkansas. And they have the Dolphins selecting him.

If we draft can he better be swapped to T.E. then maybe he can help w the wildcat once in a while.

DC all I'm saying is its illogical to just say "we need a qb in the 1st round", (not that you said that) It doesnt necessarily solve the problem. Odds are out of Mallett, Newton, Locker and Gabbert, 1 is gonna be pretty good, 1 is gonna flame out completely, and 2 will be in between. Good luck picking the right one. And will that one even be there when Mia picks? I just dont see that cant miss guy in this group. Makes it a real crapshoot

I saw cam Newtown on tv and he is awesome!! he can throw very long passes and is very big and strong. everbody is STUPID that dosent want him on the Dolphins and they didnt even see him on tv!! I never even heard of the other guys you talked about

GarbagePlate, that is why we NEED better DAMN scouts out there watching these guys perform becuase whatever formulas they concluded in drafting henne sounded more than an actual crapshoot to me, it sounded like they didnt understand the differences between what styles of offense were better suited for the role of a QB in this system.

Spread QB's SUCK in the NFL.

Two words: Pat White

I wouldn't take Newton until the 4th ruined at best. He is NOT an NFL QB!!!!!!!!

If there's a prolonged work stoppage/lockout, then very little of this talk will matter at all. Any team (like Miami) installing a new offense will be at a severe disadvantage early with players who haven't had time to learn any of it.

Although, if I had to pick one, I think Mallett is the best of the bunch. I'd have a hard time arguing against him at #16.

But I still say this draft class is risky. Give Henne 1 more year. Like someone said earlier, alot of QB's figure it out in the 3rd year of PT. The numbers bear it out. If there isnt a significant improvement, then move on to a vet FA or draft one next year. Its supposedly a better class anyway

And that ordeal makes the Sparano extension all the more nauseating.....if that does happen RTH!!!!

Had Jake Locker left school and entered the draft last season, he would have been a top ten pick. He may have fell as low as 12 or 13, but he would have gone early.
By returning to school, and to a team who had lost several seniors on offense and defense, Locker placed himself in a very compromised situation and in the end he made the wrong choice. Locker still is an enigma to most talent evaluators. He has "It All" where the tools are concerned, He can make every throw and is mobile. He has the look and ability to be an elite QB, but, like all young QB's, he would need some developmental time... he could get that with a vet starting in front of him for at least a year..
Bottom line to me is this... Whether it is Locker or another "Pro Style, Not spread" guy. Even if its our own Tom Brandstater who is a QB on par with every guy in this years draft. (Brandstater was taken by Josh McDaniel's who knows how to pick and develop QB's)...
Miami's fans and team has developed a "Psychosis" of sorts... it is an unreasonable and paralyzing fear of drafting a 1st round QB. Thing is, Shula drafted QB's "Good ones and fair ones" It is apart of the game we thought nothing of it. Shula took guys, kept some let others go. But at no time under Shula did I ever feel we had an issue at QB. However, Miami has not seen a first round QB try since Marino. That sort of fear will keep this team from EVER getting what they need. Since 2003 we have had three "High 1st round picks"... we used them on Ronnie Brown (Average)... Ginn (Bust)... Long (wrong guy, Ryan was the "right" guy)... and passed on filling the most important position on the team.
Running backs are available all the way through the 4th round. These days the idea of Elite RB's has more to do with the guy you chose and the system you run him in then what he did in the NCAA. Competition in the NCAA is too erratic. talent evaluation is where RB are found... not NCAA stars.
WE NEED A FRANCHISE QB....NOTHING or NO ONE should be more important then getting that position filled. Until it is... no coach is safe, no O-Co will succeed, No Owner will look like he has a brain. No HC will be able to compete. No WR Corp will look like they are any good. No Defense can hold another team long enough. We will never see or win in the playoffs.... and damn sure will never see or win a Superbowl.
Without a Franchise QB..... The Miami Dolphins will only continue to embarrass and frustrate it fans.... Without a Franchise QB..... WE ARE DEAD IN THE WATER...... All the other argument or reasons are just a Big "Toss-Off".... Period.

Henne went right around where he was projected in that draft...not considered a reach at all.

That doesn't mean he was the right guy, but Miami's scouts didn't grade him above or below where anyone else had him and he would have been selected very soon had Miami passed.

Remember, the odds of hitting it big on ANY of these guys aren't very good. Henne is fairly normal in that regard.

Mando, I completely agree with you. I would not take this guy, too many red flags for me, especially the character issues.

F%ck that give henne one more year BS...... Have somebody push this kid to EARN the right to be the starter and stop hand feeding him ways to succeed, if the QB aint in the draft this year, then go out and give Orton or Palmer, or yes even Vince Young a shot at this JOB.......Henne does not deserve the privlege of just being called the starting QB here in miami after this year!!!!

how about bringing in Seneca Wallace as a backup or in the worst case scenario a 1 year stopgap. he won't cost a lot and can manage the game pretty well.
for RB bring in Jerome Harrison if at all possible. He tore it up in cleveland last year then was sent to the bench in philly. He's not the full time answer but it would be nice to see someone dynamic in the backfield for a few snaps a game

superPhin: its an inexact science. I know its hard to believe now, but in '98 it was pretty much 50/50 on who to take 1st. Leaf or Manning. And I mean 50/50 amongst NFL GM's and front office people.

These guys dont know that much more than the educated fan does. Alot of us can watch a guy play and give a reasoned opinion on why or why not he'll be a good NFL player. Its really just alot of luck

If we were a top 5 nfl team, had matriculated a #16 1st rd pick, and had an established 9-10th yr qb. I would say hell yes draft a qb and allow him to sit and learn for a couple season. We would have that luxury even if he looked like bust.

However, we're not that kind of team, dont even have a 2nd rd pick too boot, and some say potentially squander the 1st rd pick too. Knock-knock, the lights are on but is anyone home?

superphin, IS THE GANG OF DEFEAT LEADER .HE'S A PROUD MAN ,A PROUD FATHER AND A PROUD FIN FAN .

CUBAN...THANKS FOR THE GROUPER RECIPE .

Mando, I completely agree with you. I would not take this guy, too many red flags for me, especially the character issues.

Do you know how many times people said the same EXACT *quote* when referencing Micheal Vick out of prison transitioning back to the NFL......are second chances in life not allowed anymore in society????....not sayin Newton fits the bill but...lets not Pre-judge the man before-hand!!!!

lets keep talkong ourselves out of great players. idiots.

IF YOU LOOK AT FOOTBALL BOOKS AND FOOTBALL SITES THAT DEVOTED ONLY TO DEVOTED FANS NOT THE IDIOTS ,YOU WILL SEE THEY AGREE ON GIVING ONE MORE YEAR,THE MOST IMOPRTANT YEAR,HE COULD BE FLAYING TO STARDOM .

High Esteemed praise aloco......I thank you and your blogfulness for the honor of being the Gang of Defeated Empire!!*lol*

"Franchise QB's" : Marino, Kelly, Moon, Fouts

Not considered "Franchise QB's": Brady, Warner, Rypien, Hostetler, Brad Johnson, Dilfer

Franchise QB's dont win you Super Bowls, good teams do

You never know where good QB's are gonna come from, some are picked in the 6th round, some are bagging groceries at a supermarket in Iowa

Here's my proposal:

Say we trade back to say 30th in the 1st rd. Pick up a late 2nd rd pick(30th). Then if any of these qb's are still sitting around at 30th pick yake him.

At least this way, even if a qb with a first rd grade isnt available at that 30th pick, we can still draft some type of offensive player with a 1st rd grade on him. We then have an ever so light 2nd rd pick(30th) and it frees up up to look at maybe getting a Kaepernuck in the 3rd rd.

There really isnt a gaping difference from chosing Kaepernuck in the 3rd rd and choosing any of the 1st rd qb's possibly available at 16th. All need work and none are year one starters.

D4Dolphins awesome last paragraph in your last post! I couldn't agree more!

Does Kurt Warner have any relatives working in bookstores right now??? I think we should start opening up our QB searches to include Retail stores and Country Golf Clubs.....just sayin!!!!

Its possible if we traded back to 30th and picked up a late 2nd rd pick. Cam Newton may still be available at 30th 1st rd.

If you listen to the so called experts they are now talking Newton down all the way to the backend of the 1st rd. I think trading back to 3oth and he still available would be a great bargain.

I want Cher to be our quarterback. She still looks fabulous for her age and has amazing fashion sense. She is an inspiration.

Point is, so called franchise qb's dont just exist, they evolve into the role. And nobody knows who they are. Not you, not me. Not 1 NFL GM or scout deemed Brady or Warner to be a franchise QB. Not one! Pretty much all of them thought Ryan Leaf and Jeff George were.

Its an educated guess at best.

DOESNT MATTER WHO'S RIGHT OR WRONG ON THIS BLOG. OUR FRONT OFFICE WILL SCREW DRAFT DAY UP ANYWAYS. IM WILLING TO BET MONEY ON IT! LOL.............

actually out of the top 4 qbs, they have gabbert numer 1, locker 2, newton 3, and mallet 4.
