Jason Taylor makes a push for the Super Bowl

The New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers will play in the AFC Championship game Sunday evening and for Dolphins fans the most compelling part of that might be that long-time Dolphins defender Jason Taylor will be involved.

You remember Taylor?

JT played 12 seasons for the Dolphins. He never got past the divisional round of the playoffs. He's in the AFC title game in his first season with the Jets.

So how does that make you feel?

Most long-time Miami fans invested much full-throated support on Taylor. Those same people probably invested as much in rooting against the Jets. So how does one reconcile that?

Before you answer, remember some facts.

Taylor was a free agent this summer. He wanted to return to the Dolphins. The Dolphins did not offer him a contract and gave him no guarantees they would. The Jets did. He signed with New York because he wanted to continue playing.

We're beyond whether the decision by the Miami braintrust was a mistake or not. But we are not beyond how Taylor will go down in Dolphins history, go down as a Miami all-timer. The guy was arguably the most effective pass-rusher of the past decade (2000-2010). He will be a Hall of Fame candidate some day.

I, frankly, hold nothing against Taylor. I wish him the best. I personally want the Dolphins to succeed anytime they play the Jets. But the Dolphins are long gone from the picture this season. So I'm not about to use energy on rooting against a guy who is a good man and was a fine player for Miami and still loves this town.

So where are you at with this?

Stop. Again.

Let me plant this seed for you: How do you feel about Larry Csonka as an all-time Dolphin? Do you hate him? How do you feel about Paul Warfield? Jim Kiick?

The truth is those three are esteemed among Miami all-timers. Csonka and Warfield are in the Hall of Fame and the Dolphins claim them as favorite sons despite the fact they played elsewhere. So if you love them and claim them, how can you possibly say you won't claim Taylor some day?

I know, I know. None of those guys played for the reviled Jets. I get that. But you know what? They left the Dolphins in their prime to chase more money in the WFL. They left for selfish reasons, however way you cut it. And in doing so, they probably dashed the chances the Dolphins had of repeating as Super Bowl champions for an amazing third consecutive year in 1974-75.

The Dolphins lost a thisclose game to the Raiders that year in the divisional round. I'm saying if Warfield, Kiick and Csonka had been on the team, the Dolphins might have, and probably would have, won.

[Correction: The trio of Csonka, Kiick and Warfiled played in the game against the Raiders and migrated to the WFL following the game. Sorry for the error.]

Before you make your final decision and post a comment. listen to the interview Taylor did today on my radio show Armando and the Amigo on 640-Sports. Judge the words for yourself. Click to listen. And then do what you do in the comments section.

And, oh by the way, I'm picking the Jets on Sunday.

I Still have Zero, AND THE CUBAN Means ZERO confidence in this current regime...........

I second the Men-ASS

Irrelevent post about an irrelevent player on an (after Sunday) irrelevent team! From a write who is quickly (since he started his little talk show on the radio) becoming irrel...(Well, you get the picture).

And, they pay you to write this crap, Mando? You didn't even bother to get your stats correct! Man, what a gig! You spent, what, all of two minutes writing this post, pulling stuff outta your butt, making up facts that aren't true to support your opinion, and you've still gotta job there at the Herald? Parcells taught you well! Do nothing, get paid, laugh all the way to the bank, but be prepared to bail if they start to figure it out!

Smoke and mirrors, Mando, smoke and mirrors! Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, eh?

Ted, very nice design ideas. I see you put a lot of thought into it. You sound quite knowledgeable on fashion. Are you in the business? Maybe you work for Andrew Marc or Vera Wang?

i remember when Zach was being courted by the Pats. I believe it was the 08 season when he eventually ended up in Dallas. I also remember Zach saying he wouldnt go to a division rival as he felt his dolphin ties were much stronger than riding the coat tails of a contender. Zach was and always will be a stand up guy in my opinion.

Do i hate Taylor for what he did in going to the Jets?. No. But i lost alot if not all respect when he said in an interview that he would first retire before going to the hated Jets. I guess JT's words are just that and money speaks louder than anything that comes out of his mouth. When hes retired i will cheer him when the dolphins honour him, and most likely place him in the ring of honor, but this will always leave a stain on his career with me. Not because of going to the jets, but because he stated he never would and retire before doing so. No integrity from JT towards fins faithful and the city.

Dying, I said this year for them was rebuilding. You bring up he needs 1-2 peices usually to be elite? There are about 8-10 new STARTERS in 2010 than in 2009. He won 14 games.

Let's also go to the roster which has 18 new players compared to 2009 which is 33%. Yes, I just compared the 2 rosters.

18 players and about 8-10 starters is only retooling? LOL yea, OK. Bellicheck made more moves this season with the roster than he has in the last 3-4 combined. Retooling is a MAJOR understatement.

Why are we afraid to say he is more of a coach than Sparano could ever dream of being? With so many new players & to win 14 games. Makes us a 2nd rate club.

hee hee, WANG

cuban, did you see what the pimp called you ,men-ass?

Cuban, how much confidence do you have in Hissoner's ability for snow-removal in the outer bourroughs?

Mark--That's correct, but the Toronto WFL franchise (the "Northmen") never materialized and wound up being moved to Memphis, where they ever-so-creatively renamed them the "Southmen."

Know what's always been amazing to me? None of those three (Csonka, Kiick, Warfield) dominated at all in the WFL and their team was an also-ran in the short history of that league.

Hope you read this Jason, behind you 100%, you gave your all for the Dolphins, hope you come away with the Big Prize, you deserve it.

Ted, how old are you? Tradition isn't everything but it comes close. Why don't you redesign the American flag while you're at it.

DC, Not sure about your people in DC but the guys here in NYC are pretty good at snow/Garbage removal, must have something to do with the "Family", Though I cant confirm it I believe it is, That's why "Organize crime" sometimes is helpful...My Advise, Make your criminals more organized, Should be easy in DC....

Armando,

Your manlove for JT sickens me. I am abhorrently disgusted by it(is abhorrently a word?).

I suspect this blog may have been fueled by some Bathtub Gin Armando. Writing about Taylor after a few too many Gin and Tonics is not a good combination for you and your manlove obviously. It makes you write things like:

".....however way you cut it"

and

"......they probably dashed the chances the Dolphins had of repeating as Super Bowl champions for an amazing third consecutive year in 1974-75."

The grammatical and factual errors aren't so bad Armando but......ah......Gin or no Gin, you can speak for yourself when it comes to offering JT your "....full throated support"!

Just Saying...............

So, from the sound of the "stirrings" I now believe Vince Young will be a Viking before all is said and done. And while many here will be delighted at that news, it only means that the #1 prospect then becomes...the dreaded Donovan McNabb (only 1 year younger than Dan Henning). I don't want us to make the same mistake as the Redskins.

Cocoajoe--I am nearly 50 and have been going to Dolphins games since before most of you were born.

I've already said I respect the tradition, but in all honesty I think the Dolphins logo is a bad cartoon and the uniforms themselves could have a much sleeker and classier look.

I don't see how having a grimacing, cartoon porpoise wearing a helmet (Jesus!) jumping through the sun makes this team more relevant.

We can respect the past but still design a better look for the team's future!

If I was still 12 I might think the logo was cool.

Odin, You Old Norse Warrior, How have you been????,How's the Pillaging and Looting business treating you??

Hey Cuban, what's the diff between organized and un-organized crime? I'm thinking the un-organized bunch does a sloppy job and no union.

Sounds like the words from a guy living in the cushy South Bronx. Ask your brothers-in-arms on Linden Blvd, Queens bro. Do you know how long it took to clear their streets after the Xmas storm? They're STILL waiting, lol.

By the way, did you have anything to do with that huge bust? You must be hating it. Now the Gambino's are done, the Colombo's done, who's left to police? The brothas in Brooklyn?

Here is a proposed Dolphins helmet that is different from my color scheme but still FAR better than what is currently worn.

See for yourself (even though I'm sure you'll be hostile to it):

http://cf.juggle-images.com/matte/white/280x280/miami-dolphins-unused-logo-primary.jpg

Just seeing the word Gin makes me sick. Had a bad experience when I was a kid, and never got over it. I'd like to, but that whole Snoop "Gin 'n' Juice" era passed me by. What's a good gin drink for someone that hates gin? Other than a rhum and coke.

LOL At DC, close, Brooklynn actually, and dont worry about the "Family", They bust one and another steps in.... They do a great job at "Removal" in all aspects., if you know what I mean, And I think you do....., Coco,Bingo...

Martinis have gin and they are disgusting...Gin is pretty horrible.

Did you guys get much snow in the NY area? Very little here in Philly...probably a little over an inch total.

That reminds me of the Penn State Nittany Lions redesign (work with me Ted, I think abstractly). But I like it.

Have to correct you on one thing though. Last email you called a dolphin a porpoise. While small dolphins are commonly referred to as porpoises, they differ in that porpoises have flattened, spade-shaped teeth, while dolphins conical teeth, and shorter beaks.

How has Mando not taken this post down yet..or at least corrected it? I wish I could be this wrong about something at my job and still keep it.

Ted, I have to say I actually like that helmet!

Was it considered by the team?

Ted I agree but rather go with a black instead of grey . That would look bad ass

Steve-Oh, yeah..I just noticed Mando's big mistake as well.

Csonka, Kiick, and Warfield were definitely on that team. Pretty big mistake even if I get his point otherwise.

Cuban, I know EXACTLY what you mean!

Marc, agreed. I tried to be all royal and high-class at an Inaugural Ball I went to. Had the Tux, so thought it would be "distinguished" to order a martini. Took one sip, and spit it out (right next to a Senator on one side and Franco Harris on the other). Everyone laughed though. I stuck to Scotch the rest of the evening thank you very much!

Ted, I was here when the lottery (contest) was won naming the Dolphins. Orange has always been a Florida color. Dolphins are in the rivers and the ocean here in Florida.

I don't know if that redesigned helmet was proposed by the team or just made up by someone in cyberspace. Found it a few years ago by Googling info about alternate Dolphins jerseys/logos.

I like it, too, even though I would go with a silver/aqua scheme and ditch the orange.

Ted silver/aqua over black with a mean dolphin would be kick a@#

Silver and Orange and ditch the aqua...Fagela color

I'm kinda diggin' Ted's vision here though. It has a certain je ne sais quoi. Doesn't look so...Nathan Lane in The Birdcage.

Damnit Ted, you've won me over there. Total redesign. Maybe not this year, but I could definitely get with it next year. If Sparano's out, it will be good timing too with a new Head Coach, new direction, new look.

Mando, can you push this angle for us? Maybe get Ted in front of Mr. Ross? He's right, it's time for a color scheme that doesn't make Rainbow Brite blush!

whata bunch of weak pitiful lame mental midgets you freaks are. if you hate jason taylor you are a complete effin moron goon box of cheap wrenches!!!!

FATBOY DIDNT WANT HIM!!! CAUSE HES SUCH A MACHO MAN AND HOMOPHOBE AND DINT LIKE THE BEST PASS RUSHER IN DOLPHIN HISTORY!! A WARRIOR!!! TOP FIVE SACK MASTERS IN NFL ALL-TIME HISTORY!!!

so he went were he WAS wanted - got paid and is playing for the afc championship.

i hate the jets too. but if you hold that against JT you are an embarrassing waste of good human skin. and stop breathing my good air!!

I know all about the history and how they were named, cocoajoe.

As a matter of fact, if you want some REAL trivia I could tell you the runner-up names were "Missiles," "Moons," "Marauders," "Mustangs," and "Sharks," among others.

I'm not saying to rename the franchise, just revamp things a bit and get rid of the cartoon character. It looks childish to me. It can always make "return engagements" for Throwback games.

Love the team and the history, just think it's time for a revamp, that's all!

tell us how you really feel scotty?

Easy Scotty or you'll bust a blood vessel...

My hatred of the Jets is much stronger than my love for JT, so sorry JT I would not like to see you win this weekend, go Pittsburgh!

Frankly cocoa (and this is for bobbyd12), in the REST of the country, Miami's uniforms are seen as a joke and not impressive. They actually just did a bit on sports talk radio up here, and listed the best and worst uni's in the NFL, we were rated one of the worst. I've heard that a lot too from other people.

So Ted has a point. These uni's instill no fear in any opponent (or maybe it's just Chad Henne instills no fear in any opponent, lol).

jason taylor is another dirty jet ,will never win any thing .

Ted....loved the post about possible new design for Fins Uniforms...hated the link and the actual picture......

But I think you got something with YOUR vision....I think the only way to make our Dolphin look tough is to make it look more like a mix between a man and a Dolphin....on ROIDS

I'm 4th gen Floridian and a amateur Florida historian Ted. So, you probably couldn't tell me anything about Florida I don't know.

How's that new fight song workin' for you?

screw taylor and screw parcells for letting him walk

DC, thanks and LOL at the "Nathan Lane" comment!

Seriously, if I had a way to post what I'm envisioning I gurantee you most of you guys would dig it.

Nothing crazy or flashy. Just a cleaner, tougher look that gets rid of the cartoony element of the logo and improves the color scheme.

You'd still recognize them as the Miami Dolphins!

My Question is how do you make a dolphin fearsome looking???????????

be careful guys asking for a redesign of the uniforms while these bozos (Ireland & Sparano) are still here calling the shots we might end up with a giant acorn on the helmets with these idiots around

Those of you on this blog who are hating on Taylor are morons...Taylor gave everything he had while he was in Miami and if it was only up to him he would have continued to do so. Taylor left because Parcells did not want him here...you want to blame or hate on someone then blame Parcells.

As a Phinfan for over 35 years I can never ever root for the Jets...I hope they lose to the Steelers or who ever they play in the SB should they make it there. However, if they do win the Super Bowl (which makes my stomach turn just thinking about it) then I will be happy for Jason Taylor that he was able to accomplish something even Marino or Zach never did.

Ken, post of the day @ 4:07pm. Giant Acorn. LMAO.

DC, I could not care less what the sports shows 'up there' think. I'm here and lovin' it.

cocoajoe, not sure why the hostility but as far as Florida roots, nope, you do not have me beaten there.

I'd also go up against you in Florida trivia ANY day and ALL day, buddy.

Miami Acorns........

Armando....are there any plans to have any current players come on your radio show......i asking in all seriousness......

The local teams radio station here in Baltimore is 105.7 THE FAN....they have never ONCE HAD A STEELER PLAYER ON......at least not while i was listening...they have the opposing teams coach....and reporter thru-out the week...but never thier chief rival players.....whats up with that....

And who said anything about the fight song?

One thing has nothing to do with the other.

LOL @ Ken.....

Ok Ted. Here's a easy one. Who was Henry Perine?

My Question is how do you make a dolphin fearsome looking???????????

----------------------

I don't think you can without making it another cartoon.

What CAN be done, though, is a more graphic version that erases the silly anthropomorphic qualities.

Undefeated 72 team authenticates the present Dolphin helmet look. No matter what change was made the correct players to wear the helmets are also needed. Better yet lets just blame the bath water for the baby being dirty! LOL...........

Cocoa, I'm sure the uni's go perfectly with your ballerina slippers and your sequins leotard.

I hate to educate an amateur historian and all, but Dolphins tradition died when Shula left. Last couple decades more resembled Tampa's creamsicle tradition. Maybe it's time for a change dude. It'll still be the same team. Just a new look and focus to maybe bring the WINNING tradition (the only tradition that matters) BACK to Miami. That's all we're saying here.
