Maybe the Dolphins way isn't the best way

BOSTON -- On my way home today but before I depart, I want to share with you my thoughts of the AFC Championship game as it relates to the Miami Dolphins.

Look, in 2008 the Dolphins were better than the Jets. They swept the Jets. They won the division ahead of the Jets. They went to the playoffs and the Jets didn't. The Dolphins were ahead.

Today they are behind.

Does anyone argue that?

The Jets are going to the AFC Championship games ... for the second consecutive year. And the Dolphins are out of the playoffs for the second consecutive year.

And that is why I write in my column today that maybe the Dolphins should rethink, adjust, consider changing the way they do business.

I list for you in the column the many differences in approach between the Dolphins and Jets. The Dolphins, for example, rarely want anything to do with veteran free agents over the age of 30ish. They want younger guys who will be around for a long time and grow into being Dolphins.

This despite the fact Miami's most successful free agent acquisition since Bill Parcells, Tony Sparano and Jeff Ireland took over was a man over 30-years-old -- Chad Pennington, who had a near MVP season in 2008.

The Jets don't give a hoot about those limitations of age. They'll add LaDainian Tomlinson when everyone says he's too old.

The Dolphins also thought this year they were complete at WR after getting one very good one in Brandon Marshall. They believed themselves complete there. And they were wrong.

The Jets? They pile talent atop talent if they can. They had Braylon Edwards. Then they added Santonio Holmes. And they did it knowing that Holmes was about to serve a suspension and was a risk and was a guy coaches had to manage. They still got him and he has been their best WR this year.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said at his meeting with the media that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. No, it's not original by him, but it is worthy of attention.

The Dolphins have done it their way -- as I point out, in various avenues -- for three years. It's lately not working, folks.

They have to consider making changes and I'm not just talking about making additions or subtractions to the roster. I'm talking about how they make those additions or subtraction. How they think. How they approach it.

I'm not saying the Jets have the answers. I am not a fan of many, many, many things they do. I think their coach knows defense and teach it very, very well, but he is also a gasbag who is morally vacuous. The Jets have flaws.

But you cannot ignore the things they have done that have paid dividends. And, no matter how much your distaste for them colors your opinion,  you cannot ignore their results.

Denny, you're saying Henne isn't the only reason Miami's offense is not like the Jets. And that Sanchez is not much different than Henne, that's what I got out of your post.

I'm saying, while he might not be the only reason, he's the MAIN reason. Not the OC, not the QB Coach, not the WRs, not the oline. Henne. Put Henne on the Jets, and you have a team that's not in the Playoffs. Because Henne isn't a leader. Henne doesn't play UP to a game, Henne doesn't have that killer instinct.

The other things you're calling for will or already did happen. OC, gone. QB Coach, gone. The WR position here is fine as it is, maybe needs 1 more guy with elite speed, but otherwise, they're set. They need a QB that they trust that has confidence, and right now they don't have that.

Building is a function of making changes, evaluating them properly - keeping the ones that worked and shedding the ones that didn't pan out. Sporano has an excellent chance to continue making upgrades this year.
The FO and HC made some good decisions this year (i.e. DC Nolan, Dansby, (defensive play-caller, Wake (CFL),and Marshal) We should also see major benefits in this coming year by the replacements of the OC and Special teams coach. We have three promising players coming back from injury that should bolster our squad. The DB's made strong gains and are growing into the job as well. Obviously the biggest area of concern is the QB position. There will be a few possibilities to secure an improvement out there. I love the Missouri QB but we will see. The new OC and New QB coach have a bit of a challenge to coach up Henne but I still think it can be done.

We need to forget the Jets and the Pats and focus on our efforts.

yomama, the only problem with that is that the the Jets behavioral ways stem directly from the coach and the players they sign. So you're saying we should sign the same vets and I'm saying that those same guys are pieces of s**t who caused all kinds of problems on their other teams. They were locker room cancers. Even LT in the end was bitching every day in SD causing his teammates to walk on eggshells.

Ryan apparently can handle those types of players, does anyone believe Sparano can? Show of hands? So no, doing the same thing as the Jets wouldn't work down here.

And yoyoma if you've been a fan for a while you will remember like Joe pointed out Shula tried the same thing in 95. Didn't work. Doesn't work for every team.

I love when a team starts winning and everyone says "oh my god, we're doing it wrong, we have to do it like them". As if it's that simple. There are so many factors and varying degrees of philosophies that make that winning possible.

The Jets will be a flash in the pan. These older men will need to be replaced, and with their shortage of draft picks the team will fall off. Miami on the otherhand is young, full of potential, and incomplete. I still believe Miami's methods are better. However, they must find a QB.

Denny, I'd rather suckle on Ryan's feet LOL

Garbage, don't be fooled by rankings. Miami may have finished 6th, but this defense has work to be done yet. We weren't good against good teams & we were good against bad teams. That is not the signs of an elite D. It's the signs of an average D.

I love your optimism. However, considering we need an interior oline, 2 rb's, 2 qb's, a speed wr, a speed TE, a FS, a nickel Db, an OLB who can rush like Wake, an ILB & a return guy...I can't see how you say this team is close.

DC we will have to agree to disagree on that one. I believe that you give Henne all of the weapons and coaches Sanchez has and he immediately becomes a better qb. And the thing is, we will never know because he will never get the chance to perform in that type of environment. One in which the coaches play to win, not play to keep it close. So we just have a difference in opinions that can never be sorted out so we will have to respectfully agree to disagree.

Well, society is worse than the Jets, and it's really not "many" that make the rules, it's the 1% that make the rules, the other 99% follow them.

He's immoral because he uses profanity? I'd venture to say that 90+% of all adults do.

Because he has a foot fetish? That beats the fetishes that Catholic priests have...Namely, little boys. And those priests are the one's telling you who's moral or not.

QUESTION EVERYTHING!

REBEL, REVOLT

Why? They know what they're doing, we don't.

And there you have it in a nutshell. It's possible that Ireland/Sparano might get to be very good at their respective jobs someday. Maybe. Someday.

Just to make it clear the Jets still suck. Don't be fooled. They will lose one of the next two.

Armando,
I think you need to go back one more year. The Dolphins and Jets both were rebuilding. The Dolphins went youth, the Jets went out and got Alan Faneca. The two teams committed to opposite approaches to rebuilding. After one year, it looked like we were right. It's clear now that the Jets were.

Denny, what you're witnessing is adult fans who have better things to do than curse and throw a tantrum. Maybe saying, "I hate the Jets" and throwing a bunch of symbols in your post is therapeutic for you, but me and others just want to win. We don't care about hating on a team when they're in the Playoffs and we're on the sideline because we see the childish nature of that.

My desire for my team to actually win more games than they lose is stronger than my desire to "sock it to my enemies." We beat the Jets twice last year, yet, they were still in the AFC Championship game, and we were playing with ourselves.

Hating the Jets puts you one step closer to nothing. I'd rather get worked up on things that my team can control and that will improve my team (so, the personnel, the coaches, the winning philosophy, that kind of stuff).

I'm glad there are others here who think like that.

DC, you left out competent o-line, above average TE, and top 3 rushing attack. Those things are kind of important to a qbs success. Especially a young qb. Sanchez has all of that, Henne doesn't and never will. They will not be able to build all of those weapons before they are forced to give up on Henne to save their own careers. Henne has been in the league "starting" for one full season. The coaches have decades of experience yet still didn't surround their young (2nd round qb) with the same pieces that have helped Sanchez win games.

OMG, Marc, Again I agree with you!!!!!!!!!!! Is this The Apocalypse????

Keep up the good fight marc. Even if you can never win. God that must be so exhausting. :)

Marc, 2012 is just around the corner, Can you give us a glimpse on how it will all end???

And don't think I'm calling you out Denny. Like you said, it's two ways of thinking.

I've been hating on the Jets and Pats forever it seems. Especially the last decade. But they're where they are, and we're where we are.

Until I see a passionate team and franchise that respects itself and does what it takes to win, I'm not gonna be the pitbull I used to be for this team. That's what happens when you play not to lose or lose at home. You start losing the passion of the fanbase. And frankly, my passion is waning until I see a product on the field worth being passionate for.

I hope there is a lockout next year so the draft in 2012 is decided purely by lottery and somehow by the power of destiny and luck we land the #1 pick and select Andrew Luck as he goes on to be our next Dan Marino. As it stands, that's the most probable way we will even ever smell the AFC Championship or even the Playoffs for that matter.

Goes to show we are not as far away as some of some of you think.

We did beat both the teams in the AFC Championship game this season!

"My desire for my team to actually win more games than they lose is stronger than my desire to "sock it to my enemies."

And talking about what the team needs to do on a football blog is going to get them those wins? Well you keep plugging away at solving our teams problems. For some reason the guys in charge of the team aren't listening.

I'm going to keep hating my rivals. Make sure to but your Jets jersey before the game Sunday.

Denny, I agree that all hands involved were responsible for destroying the heart of this franchise. Management, coaching staff, players, all helped in making this a perfect storm of mediocrity.

ARMANDO ,

3 WEEKS AGO YOU WROTE AN ARTICLE SAYING THAT YOU TAKE SPARANO OVER REX RYAN AND DAY OF THE WEEK AND LISTED THE REASONS ..... WHAT HAPPENED ?

DID YOU IGNORE ALL THE MORALES YOU BELIVE IN OR YOU JUST TRYING TO STIR THE POT ?

I have watched every Dolphin game for the past few years and continue to be frustrated with the coaching staff. Too many times the coaches called plays that make a novice wonder if he couldn't do better.
I would like to blame it all on Henne (and he does need to shoulder quite a bit of blame) but I have seen way too many drops by receivers who's only job is to catch the ball. We need to catch the ball!
On the defense side, we make good plays, but we don't make great plays. I used to tell my son when he played (safety) that knocking down a pass is a good play, but a pick off, or forced fumble CHANGES THE COURSE OF THE GAME. We have left way too many chanced to change the game on the field. Any many times, we pay the price.
Getting rid of an awesome OL last year is frankly just baffling. I have no retort for the moves they made there.
Now to Henne. The coaching staff decimated this prospect. Henne has all the tools, yet they have him so scared, that as soon as he is pressured, he either goes down or tosses the ball away. We need a QB to make big plays while making sound decisions. Henne has a huge arm, yet we dink and dump all game. Now, when he does throw deem, he short-arms the ball and under throws the ball. I don't understand, especially since we have Marshall, who really should be opening up the field for Henne. Marshall, Hartline deep, Bess and Fasano (we need to get a good TE) underneath (Cobbs and Ronnie underneath also). In order to open up the run game, you must be a deep threat or at least some type of pass threat. Not to mention (although I did briefly) Henne had NO time to throw. But Henne, at this point, is not the answer and we need to bring in competition to either improve his game, or prove his game.
Special teams is a joke. Bluntly, we are horrible and lose games on field position.
Finally, the coaching staff needs to STOP PUTTING DRIVES TOGETHER TO KICK FIELDGOALS! We always settle. We need to play hard, smashmouth football and score touchdowns.
Get rid of the coaching staff
Retain Henne, but bring in viable competition
Upgrade the OL, Long is the lone standout
Revamp the special teams
bring in speed at the RB position, get rid of Williams.
I will always be a Dol-Fan, we dont need to be like NE or NYJ, we need to be better.

"Those who refrain from change or due to wallow in there own Mediocrity"....Cuban Menace 1998

And talking about what the team needs to do on a football blog is going to get them those wins?

Denny, do you realize there was a huge controversy because our Owner went to Cali to talk to a hot new Coaching prospect, right? Why do you think he did that? He heard from the fanbase that they weren't happy with the product on the field. They were chanting for Henne's demise. They were ridiculing the play on the field on the offense side.

So, yes, I think the fanbase does have some ability to demand change by doing the very things we're doing here (or at the stadium).

dc just read your post at 11:52. Fair enough, and I understand your point. Been a fan for 30 years now so I understand the frustration. I live in NY so please understand that after sitting in a bar FULL of Jets fans last night the last thing I wanted to do was come in here today and read about how great the Jets are! :)

I thought I was going to come in and be able to vent about them and it's a big love fest!Hhahahahaha Oh well, ski trip to Vermont tomorrow, I'm sure all of the Pats fans around there will help me out with some hate.

I've heard this talk of the Jets approach to "Win Now" since Mangina and the moves they made then with the Guard they traded for and some LB I believe...Every year they're going to fall apart the next, they won't have the money, they've mortgaged their future, and yet...THEY HAVEN'T! Guess what else? When you WIN some players negotiate for LESS MONEY, some FA take LESS MONEY, some players re-structure contracts...

and to whoever said the Ravens almost NEVER do much via trade/FA

BOLDIN, TJ Houzyamomma?

DC, forgive my snarky tone. Rough day today, took a beating last night from Jet fans, all of whom knew I was a Dolphin fan and were acting like their usual classless selves.

JETS HAS A WORST HISTORY THAN 99 PERCENT OF THE NFL TEAMS .FOR US TO BE GUIDED BY THE JETS B/C JT JOINED THEM SPEAKS OF IGNORANCE AND DEFEAT.

"Building" for the future is now in year 3, When will the "Future" be???????

Cuban, you wrote that in '98? LOL, more things change...

Denny, I understand your frustration. Believe me, I despise the Jets. Would NEVER root for them (which was why I was for the Pats yesterday, who I'd never root for, UNLESS they were playing the Jets).

All I'll say is the best revenge will be to beat them to a pulp next year twice (both of them). But to do that, this team has A LOT of improving to do in all facets of the game.

Oh S**t! ALoco in the house!!!!!!!!! With some old article facts used to call out Mando and his flip flopping ways? Atta boy Aloco,,,,,hahahaha!

THE DOLPHINS ARE CHANGING,I BELIEVE THE CHANGES ARE COMING AND TO BE GUIDED BY THE JETS IS TO ASK THE ANGELS TO FOOLOW THE DEVIL IN MARC .

"Building" for the future is now in year 3, When will the "Future" be???????

In the future.

Unless the Jets win the Superbowl, their season is a failure. All the talk & brash predictions have to be lived up to.

There are no 2nd place prizes. If the ultimate goal is to win the Superbowl every year & the Jets fail to do so, they will achieve the exact same result as the Bills, Lions, Dolphins, Bengals etc...How far they go is irrelevant. Fickle fans will use it as a trash talking point. Who Cares?

Only 1 will be a Champ, 31 will be chumps.

Agreed DC.

I don't think Mandy saying that he prefers Sparano to Ryan and then commending the JETS organization for the way they've succeeded is flip-flopping.

Two different ideas. Of course, I wouldn't expect that tard to grasp that.

IT'S A FACT...ARMANDO SAID... I TALKE SPARANO OVER REX RAYN ANY DAY OF THE WEEK 3 WEEKS AGO .

DID ARMANDO LOST ALL HIS MORALS THAT HE BELIEVES IN ?

I suppose I'm a Bears fan now. Hate the Jets, and GB and Pitt both have more Lombardi trouphies than anyone, maybe Dallas in there somewhere?

So, Da Bears!

Joe, exactly. There can be only 1!

Henning was horrible, Henne not much better. get a vet like Orton Hasslebeck or Volek and Draft Andy Dalton or Pat Devlin after taking a speedy playmaker like Jerrel Jerigan and pick up Hightower, Brad Smith and Kalil via FA then take a big durable back Daniel Thomas, Alan Bradford in later rounds. Take a flier on TE Weslye Saunders

MARC ,

DID YOU TAKE YOUR DRUGS TODAY ?

I agree that we can change this team around with some veteran players, but we need to build young players also. If we got some veteran winners maybe the younger players will learn from them and continue there success. We need first a great offensive cordinator and then a great team leader in a quarterback who can deliver, read defenses and not throw the ball away so much. We will need a revamped running game with Ricky most likely leaving. There are alot of ifs and were seein what the Ireland and Sparano and ross can do to make improvements. Dolphin Doug.

I SEA THAT ALL THE BROWN MONKYS ARE HERE,MENAC,DC,AND THE CROS DRESER MARC,TALK ABOUT YUR GANG OF DEFEET, YOIU ALL ARE HYENAS

IN A WORLD OF NO PRINCIPLES ,ALL DONKEYS BECOME WIZARDS ,

IT'S EASY TO POST ANY THING BUT IT'S SO TOUGH TO LIVE BY A PRINCIPAL .

Question, can we hire an OC now, or do we have to wait for after the SuperBowl? Just wondering what's going on. Are they interviewing and making their decisions, waiting for other prospects to stop playing, does the CBA have to be signed first (even though it's still in effect until March), anyone know the deal?

Truer words have never been spoken Joe. They better win because their window is closing. But I don't believe they were building the same way with Mangini. It seems they had a swift change in philosophy when Ryan arrived. I think Mangini was trying to be like Belichick and build slowly with an eye on long term success, not just one superbowl and back on the heap.

Not sure if you were the one talking about that and I don't feel like checking but wanted to mention this. And that doesn't just come from fan opinion. There are a lot of NFL people who say that the Jets have mortgaged their future for quick but fleeting success. Ofcourse no one knows this for sure, they could get theri lost draft picks back, they could replace all of their over the hill vets with slightly younger over the hill vets and be just as strong. But they won't have a lot or even high round draft picks to do it with. Their GM will need to be on his toes.

This article is not titled. "Why I love Rex Ryan". It's about how the JETS do business. I'm sure Mandy DOES prefer Sparano. They seem to both be pretty conservative, god-fearing indivuals.

I actually quite enjoy Rex Ryan's personality, and approach. I think he's hilarious. Sucks that he went to the Jets because I'm forced to hate him.

Now, I'm going to get a d@mn snack!

FAKE ALoco @ 12;13... could be marc THE DEVIL

Huh? Cuban, Marc, you guys understand any of that?

I love Marc and Alocos arguments! Now that's entertainment. I knew I could get you going marc, you're so easy!!!! lol :)

Let's be real here....Yes, the Jets added Edwards and Holmes....The Dolphins added Marshall and maybe should have added another veteran receiver....However, the Jets OL is mostly draftees as well as their DL. Cromartie was a good pickup....but the Dolphins added Dansby, a good pickup. The difference as always is at QB....While Sanchez statistically sucks in most games he does do enough not to lose games and wins some at the end. What the Jets upset showed is not how far the Dolphins are away, but how close. A couple of key free agents and better QB play will get them in the playoffs....I believe Henne can be that QB but long-term they will need more.......they need to draft one...

Shouldn't we wait til the Jets have actually won something.

DC they can hire when whenever they want. Shefter expects an announcement in the next couple of days.

JETS DID WELL LAS 2 YEARS AND DID WAY WORST LAST 260 YEARS.

DO ARMANDO REALLY WANTS US TO FOLLOW THE JETS AND JT ?

they can hire 'one' whenever they want.

The Dolphins suck because management has passed on MANY MANY talented free agents... The signing of Dansby and Marshall was great but clearly not enough to make this team a playoff contender. If you look at the number of players they (Dolphins) have passed up and look at the teams that did pick them up.... example: Jets, Baltimore, New England, Steelers, Colts... wow all of them where in the playoffs!!! You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out......

the bottom line is this team tanked down the stretch for two straight years and we have a coach that obviously loves field goals, just look how happy he was with the first two in the first quarter of steelers game i was sick over that he shoulda been fired right then and now he gets an extension we are the lions and saints of the past, sparano is not an nfl head coach

DC, Gotta be able to read "Aloconise", and I beilive that Lil aloco has sullied the good name of G.O.D(Gang of defeat) and included Marc....

Thanks Denny, that would be good. We need to get things in motion before the CBA ends.

CLEANED PROUD FANS DON'T FOLLOW THE FOOT REX FOR WHATEVER REASON.....REAL FANS DON'T CHANGE THEIR BELIEVE OR PRINCIPALS B/C THE JETS HAD 2 YEARS OF SUCCES AND 260 YEARS OF FAILURES ......
