Maybe the Dolphins way isn't the best way

BOSTON -- On my way home today but before I depart, I want to share with you my thoughts of the AFC Championship game as it relates to the Miami Dolphins.

Look, in 2008 the Dolphins were better than the Jets. They swept the Jets. They won the division ahead of the Jets. They went to the playoffs and the Jets didn't. The Dolphins were ahead.

Today they are behind.

Does anyone argue that?

The Jets are going to the AFC Championship games ... for the second consecutive year. And the Dolphins are out of the playoffs for the second consecutive year.

And that is why I write in my column today that maybe the Dolphins should rethink, adjust, consider changing the way they do business.

I list for you in the column the many differences in approach between the Dolphins and Jets. The Dolphins, for example, rarely want anything to do with veteran free agents over the age of 30ish. They want younger guys who will be around for a long time and grow into being Dolphins.

This despite the fact Miami's most successful free agent acquisition since Bill Parcells, Tony Sparano and Jeff Ireland took over was a man over 30-years-old -- Chad Pennington, who had a near MVP season in 2008.

The Jets don't give a hoot about those limitations of age. They'll add LaDainian Tomlinson when everyone says he's too old.

The Dolphins also thought this year they were complete at WR after getting one very good one in Brandon Marshall. They believed themselves complete there. And they were wrong.

The Jets? They pile talent atop talent if they can. They had Braylon Edwards. Then they added Santonio Holmes. And they did it knowing that Holmes was about to serve a suspension and was a risk and was a guy coaches had to manage. They still got him and he has been their best WR this year.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said at his meeting with the media that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. No, it's not original by him, but it is worthy of attention.

The Dolphins have done it their way -- as I point out, in various avenues -- for three years. It's lately not working, folks.

They have to consider making changes and I'm not just talking about making additions or subtractions to the roster. I'm talking about how they make those additions or subtraction. How they think. How they approach it.

I'm not saying the Jets have the answers. I am not a fan of many, many, many things they do. I think their coach knows defense and teach it very, very well, but he is also a gasbag who is morally vacuous. The Jets have flaws.

But you cannot ignore the things they have done that have paid dividends. And, no matter how much your distaste for them colors your opinion,  you cannot ignore their results.

To all the football experts who post here...
You can blame the Dolphins troubles on Henne but if you saw yesterdays game... Tom Brady was on his a z z many times and he was throwing balls all over the place including many right at the ground and an INT.... the point is, when you are getting hit every play and your offensive line is sucking EVEN THE BEST QB'S IN THE LEAGUE make mistakes.... so don't put all the blame on Henne.... how about WR dropping passes, line not blocking, RB's dancing around not gaining a yard, bad play calling.. etc...
If Henne was in New England he would be a top 5 QB in the league.

The Jets rolled the dice and collected every talented malcontent, pending retiree and criminal they could find. They have a two-year window where they could win it all- but they could just as easily implode.

Against all odds, Ryan has managed to hold off the failed drug tests, DUI / gun / domestic violence arrests, paternity suits and/or injuries that will eventually cripple that team in the short AND long term.

The Dolphins suffered more than their fair share of injures and bad luck this year, whereas the Jets were very fortunate. You can say that they're better than the Fins and the results support that, but those circumstances could easily reverse themselves next year.

We have WAY more talent than we did in 2007, and the Jets / Pats are getting older. I like the direction that we're headed, though we do need to find an OC who believes in scoring and a QB coach who can coach Henne (or the next guy) up.

Best thing Sparano could do is...retire (lol, just joking). No, if he learns to play to win. Take all the chances week 1 you'd take week 16. Did you guys see Belichick, going for 2 at the END OF THE 3rd QTR? That's gutsy. I hope Sparano was watching.

joey's right, let's keep Henne, and get rid of the rest of the offense. Then we'll be better!!!

I will be the first to say that we need a QB, but lets face it the reason why the Jets are going to The AFC championship is because of there Defense. Defense wins games, look at all 4 teams left in the playoffs GB, Bears, Steelers and the Jets, they all have something in common, great defense. With Nolans help this year we improved but, we still need some work. The Jets pretty much shut down the two best QB's in the league the last two weeks, and put themselves in favorable field position, which made it easier for Sanchez to succeed. Thats why they one. So with that being said lets find a veteran corner to stand beside Vontae, and find a veteran pass rush Safety to stand beside Bell and lets imprve tha t secondary so we can hang with the big boys.

JOEY I don't know if they passed all of the time. There were more than a few times we tried to land someone who turned us down because they wen to teams that weren't rebuilding. Good players, vets in the declining years of their careers want to go to a team that has a chance at a ring. 9-7 was the Dolphins ceiling this year n matter how anyone wants to spin it. No aging vet is going to sign with a team he knew would be in a fight for a playoff spot.

But they certainly have missed on many free agents that did sign (Green,Wilford,Groves, etc) and they have failed to build a good o-line event hough our head coach was known to be an offensive line guru.

Does that not make everyones head explode? We have to find a C, RG, and possibly upgrade RT in the fourth offseason of a rebuilding project that was supposed to start on the o-line!!!!!! Oh my God that is just the epitome of complete failure and should have proceeded a change of head coach and GM!

LOL RK, I'd agree with you except the fact that those teams you mentioned had to score over 21 points to win. Yes, defense is great, but if you can't score in the NFL, you're not going to win. Teams tried that way before (all defense), and once a decade, yeah, some defense is so beastly it can compensate for no offense.

But, we could have had this same defense, and just a little better offense, and be in the position any of those teams is in.

This organization has depleted the offense for years (not just the Trifecta). And nothing. Maybe it's time to improve the offense some.

BEWERE OF BROWN DONKYS LIKE DC,MARK THE CRS DRESER,THGEY WILL MEKE YOU THE THE DALPHONES ARE IN LAST PLACE BUT THERE ONLY 18 PLAYERS FROM GIOING TO THE SOPER BWOL.I HATE BROWN MONKYS

HAHAHA I knew dc was going to jump on that one. Yeah, it was a little shortsighted.

before we get too carried away with "the jets way" of doing things and following their blueprint lets not forget they changed alot of what they were doing all year in these two playoff games regarding coverages and not blitzing as much etc. sometimes a good way of doing things is just to change what you were doing when no one expects it. the one thing i would follow of theirs is get a good o linemen for each position and stick with him not keep switching

ALoco someone is impersonating you (i wonder who;) so why don't you sign in on type pad so no one can use your name. You will be in blue. You seem to have this problem a lot and it's confusing because the thing is, sometimes they're not too far off on things you say! But you could do yourself a huge favor by setting up your own screen name.

Denny, yes, that makes my head explode. The oline was the highest paid group on this team. They've been tinkered with for the entire 3 years the Trifecta has been here. They've used high draft picks on them.

Joe and others said they want long-term success on Miami. But, in year 3, the Dolphins oline regressed, NOT improved.

That's my point. Improvement is hard in today's NFL, because there is no continuity. One year you have a player, next you don't. Ireland/Sparano's style also isn't helpful in continuity. They keep changing people around. That's also why our special teams sucks year in and year out.

Yes, for those reasons, they shouldn't be leading this team. Unfortunately, they still are. Will they learn from their mistakes? Time will tell.

Dont get me wrong DC Dolfan, I agree we need to upgrade our offemse as well and it seems we are headed in that direction. But I just want them to make a few upgrades on the defensive end as well, and not loose sight that we have some talent there and with a few adjustments they can be real badass.

The last time the Jets won the SB was in 1969 which was followed by the Perfect season 1972 Dolphins...

If history repeats itself... Well... It would be nice to have the 2014 Dolphins perfect along with the 72 Fins in Perfectville...

BRING IN COWHER AND LET HIM HIRE WHOEVER HE NEEDS TO GET THE JOB DONE.

DENNY, I TRUST YOUR INTELLIGENT TO KNOW THE REAL ALoco FROM THE FAKE ONE .

DC Dolfan@10:59....Great Post.I agree with everything you said. Was going to post something similar but you East Coast guys get to start your day before the sun even rises here. A lot of excuse making, and finger pointing on this side. Just results for them.

Yeah, cause our team is FULL of good christian boys...

3 DUIs
1 assault on a police office
2 Domestic Violence
1 Truck in ditch
1 repeat offense pothead

That was just the past year, and that's what made the headlines!

I don't care what the players do in their offtime, as long as they WIN!

and Denny. I am easy...Just ask ALOCO's mom ;)

We play good teams just bad enough to lose and bad teams just bad enough to lose.
If we would have beaten the Steelers, then won against the bills, browns and lions (all should have been wins) we would have been in the playoffs.
We are getting close, but we need the big wins to get us there. We beat the pack this year, but we cannot maintain consistency and I believe that has everything to do with coaching and game planning.
With a good QB (and that could be Henne if he is coached correctly) we could be there. However, after this year, we need a lot of help in other areas.
I am the biggest Steeler's fan this week, I really hate the Jets, they must lose.

Icc good point. They were talking about that in last nights game. Ryan was smart enough to change his entire defensive philosophy against Indianapolis. Took out the blitzing full out and went with more mixed zone coverages. Confused Manning and impressed the hell out of me.

I'm to used to seeing a blue haired OC yell at us about how his plays should work every time if the players on his team run them correctly. STUPID EGO. Never allowed him to see that a change could confuse the opposition so they aren't lining up next to our receivers and telling them which routes they're about to run!

And that's another reason I want to see Henne compete in training camp with a veteran and draft pick! If what that DB said was true, how in the hell is Henne supposed to throw less ints when the opposing defense is already aware of the routes that are being run by our receivers? Has anyone thought about that?

MARC,

DID YOU TAKE YOUR DRUGS TODAY ?

Aloco, Could the imposter be Dying Breed???(OMG a imposter claiming there's a imposter, It truely is the end of times).....LOL

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the Dolphins get screwed out of a win against the Steelers and beat the Jets at NY? A couple of bounces here and there (and a dropped interception or two), it could be Miami in the AFC championship game. These teams are a lot closer together than some think.

DB and ALOCO were definately interchangable last night. I believe that cover is blown. Of course, you have a point Cuban. We'll never know all of your handles.

WHEN MARINO WAS AROUND ALL FANS WENT TO THE GAME AND POINTED AT MARINO TO THEIR KIDS AND SAID ,HE'S MY HERO EVEN WE DID.T GO TO THE SUPER BOWEL....WE ENJOYED WATCHING THE DOLPHINS ..........SPOAR IS A GREAT THING ....

FOR MARC TO ASK US TO FORGT THAT IS ASING US TO FORGET HIS MOM IS A WHOR ...

Denny/ALoco and others, here's what I'd need to see not to be in the Gang of Defeat:

- Sparano sticks with ONE oline ALL year (barring injury and substitution). This way, they have a chance to gel.

- Have CORE ST players (and a designated kick returner that ONLY returns kicks)

- Initiates a "Play to Win" strategy instead of a "play not to lose" strategy.

- Use free agency wisely (as you did with Marshall, Dansby). Realize a rookie out of the draft won't always improve your team as much as a vet can.

- Ireland destroys the "prototypical" player model.

- Henne does things in the offseason to better bond with his teammates. No, not just at OTAs. Not just throwing the ball around. But other things that brings his players together and helps them understand each other, their personalities, what makes them tick, etc.

- Henne works with a QB Coach in the offseason to improve the accuracy, ball placement, footwork issues that have hindered him.

- Marshall, Bess, Hartline, Fasano and the ENTIRE Defensive Back unit catch 1,000 balls a day.

- Sparano learns who to dress on game days, and doesn't always bring 100 olinemen that won't do much when he has WRs, CBs and RBs that can help the team more.

These things would be a good start to changing the culture and turning things around here in Miami.

Henne needs to be given another chance to compete. He is a proven starter (true freshman starter at Michigan) and can be good if they coach him right, ie let him make decisions in the game he is playing. A QB needs to be able to dissect a defense and make the throws that open up. Henne was too busy trying to stick to Henning's plays to make his own.
The best QBs in the league are able to adjust to the defense and take advantage of their mistakes.
Henne has the tools, just no power to use them.

Dedicated return specialists aren't necessary. MANY teams use starters as returners. Never understood the hesitation to use a starter back there. Teams have been doing it forever.

Now, FINDING that guy is another story.

BRADY WAS SACKED 6 TIMES LAST NIGHT ,IF THAT WAS HENNE ,THE GANG OF DEFEAT WOULD HAVE A FEAST ON HIM ,HENNE THAT IS .

No, DB. I didn't take my drugs today. I left them at your mom's house. Since you live there could you check her nightstand for me?

All the blow I did was off her ass, so, there should only be a few pills in there...

and don't steal the vi@gra and try to r@pe her cat.

No OTAs this offseason unless bargining is resolved. No offseason programs at all. People thinking we will have some drastic makeover on the offense have another thing coming. Can it be done? Maybe. That is why I think Chudzinski makes the most sense.

MD Dolfan, sometimes, if you feel you're right, you empower yourself. I'm sure Bess has broken off a route to be in a better position than the route would have put him. That's not the coach's decision, and Bess was undrafted. But he did it because he empowered himself, and did what was necessary to get the job done.

If what you guys say is true, that Henne never had the power to overrule the coaches, don't you blame ANY of that on Henne being such a wuss he can't listen to the coach, and then overrule him?

And, guys...Please.

HENNE SUCKS, just like SEAN SMITH, and I don't give a dang what PFF says.

I'd rather copy the Green Bay model for success. They've gone with youth and built through the draft. Very few free agents. What they do have is a QB who knows how to throw it down the field, and receivers who know how to pick up yards after the catch. By the way, I hate Green Bay

PIZZA WITH MEAT BALLS
CHEESE CARMEL CAKE

Darryl, What will you being doing this off season being up there in the black Mountains, Just wondering??

DC, i think you gotta forget about henne;you cannot teach all that he is lacking. he was coached up ad nauseum for 3 years and regressed as sparano defended him after every bad game. sparano has to grow a set and become an nfl coach quickly. we are falling further behind as the front office trys to put another plan in place. i've lost confidence in the parcells disciples.

Here's an interesting FA article:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/571538-2011-nfl-free-agents-20-players-teams-should-avoid-signing

WHOA, WHOA, WHOA now. Never again do I want to see Denny/ALoco written as if we're the same person or even remotely close in our opinions! No offense, I love ya ALoco, but even you have to admit we're on two different planes of thought.

And ALoco, don't ever trust that I'm "intelligent enough". You're probably wrong ;)

ALoco, if Henne got his team to a 14-2 record (like Brady did), then the Gang of Defeat would have understanding if he got sacked 6 times and didn't win the game.

But when Henne got his team to 7-9, not once, but twice, yeah, he gets more blame than a Tom Brady would (that shouldn't be very surprising).

P@S, They have a pretty good QB in green bay..

WHY ANY ONE SHOULD BELIEVES THE BLEACHER RPORT CRAP ?

WE GOT TO HAVE OUR OWN CHOICES .

DC Dolfan
Yes, I do. I put a lot of that on Henne. But they torched a true talent by making him too jumpy to make mistakes and / or take chances. That is why I said Henne is not the current answer to our QB woes and we need to bring in competition to either push him in or push him out.
I honestly dont care if you make a mistake now and again to try to make a play, but he has been mistake ridden. Despite all that, I still have hope for Henne, but only one more year of hope. If he does not improve, or get his confidence back, he needs to go and we need to start fresh.

2011 NFL DRAFT

Roger Goddell - We have a trade. The Miami Dolphins send the #15 pick to the Seattle Seahawks for the #25 overall pick and #57 overall picks. And with the #15 pick the Seattle Seahawks select Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama.

5 hours later.............

Roger Goddell - With the #25 overall pick of 2011 NFL draft the Miami Dolphins select Orlando Franklin, Guard, University of Miami.

Kiper - Well Miami seems to have reached bit with prospects on the board like Tyron Smith of USC and Anthony Constonzo of Boston College it seems Miami could have addressed their o-line with better prospects.

Back in Miami......

Sparano - Well Alonz....Orlan....Orlando Franky gives us some much needed versatility and depth. He is big enough to play Guard but smart enough I think to play Center.

Ireland - Orlando Franklin is another building block for this organization. Remember, it isn't who is the best player but who is the best player for this team. Plus he fits our size requirements and he is a Senior.

Ross - Franklin is a local kid and should get the local fans fired up. I will deliver a winner.

A day and 3 hours into round 2.....

Some black guy from the NFL front offices - With the #63 overall pick Miami selects Jarvis Jenkins, DT, Clemson.

Kiper - Well Miami clearly wants to address both sides of the line but with prospects like Ryan Williams (RB, Va Tech) slipping into round 2 and speedster Torrey Smith (WR, Maryland) sitting there you have to wonder when Miami will add a play maker to this team.

Back in Miami.........

Sparano - (PUMPING HIS FIST) I like the versatility of Johhny Jenkins he can play the 5 technique and slide inside on passing downs.

Ireland - we want the best 53 guys on our roster for us. We don't worry about who the WORLD thinks is the best. We want football players plus Ryan Williams wasn't a Senior. We plan on evaluating some acorns to spell Ronnie Brown (resigned 3 years 15 million).

Ross - I will deliver a winner. I predict Super Bowl.

Greg, I have forgotten about Henne. The problem is the team hasn't. He's still employed by Miami and will be next year. They will get someone else for competition, but he'll be the backup at worst. So, one way or the other, he can come back to hurt the team. Therefore, best thing for us Henne-haters is for him to be coached up as much as possible. I don't want to see him starting, but if god forbid the starter gets injured, and Henne has to come in, I want him to be better capable than he is now.

I am not, I repeat I am not a card carrying member of the 'Gang of Non-Defeatists' or the G.N.D if you prefer.

By the way, I tried to join but ALoco wouldn't let me in due to my defeatist attitude toward our O-line.

This blog needs new blood!

LOL @ Incompetence 101...That's about spot on!

LOOK FOR MIMI TO GET JHON GARRET AND DRAFT THE GREAT JACORY HARRIS THGIS UPCOMMING DREFT,THEN ALL THE BROWN MONKYS WILL SE HIOW ITS DONNE

Incompetence, that's scary how realistic is was, lol.

Lets add our two cents..

1st : How do you bring back BOTH Ireland And Sparano

2nd : I do believe that Henne has all the tools but has been coached by idiots, Sanchez has not been.

3rd : Cowher is STILL available, but Ross is boss, and for some unknown reason, he wants to keep Ireland, which has shown me nothing !

Its a sad day when 3 years ago, we were at least even with the Jets, and today we SUCK and theyre going to their 2nd Championship game... SAD.

Incompetence.....I read your post and laughed because it was funny.....then I thought about it and cried because its probably true.....

Sign vj or malcom Floyd sd can not keep both , get von miller or a stud linemen sign jocby Jones he can get down field

Yes, ALoco, that's the spirit. Let's bring in ANOTHER QB that has more INTs than TDs to compete with our CURRENT QB with more INTs than TDs. That's the ticket!

J. Suarez
Amen brother, Cowher should have been courted a bit before giving Sparano an apology extension

DENNY,

YOU INTELLIGENT IS VERY CLEAR TO BE ABOVE MOST BLOGGERS , STILL I DON'T BLAME YOU ON YOUR POST @ 12;56.

DC, IF HENNE HAD 16-0 AND WAS SAKED 6 TIMES AND LOST HIS FIRST PLAYOFF GAME AS BRADY YOU WOULD CALL HIM OVERRATED QB .

dC QUIT TRYING TO BE YHE LAEDER OF THE GANG OF DEFEET, YOUR A BROWN DONKY THAT SHOULD MATE WITH A BROWN MONKEY YOU WOULD CREATE A NEW SPECIES KNWOWN AS A MONEKEY.

chris loves marc at night .

"DENNY,
YOU INTELLIGENT IS VERY CLEAR TO BE ABOVE MOST BLOGGERS , STILL I DON'T BLAME YOU ON YOUR POST @ 12;56."

Ahhhhhhhh, you're a sweet kid there ALoco.

Fellas,
the Dolphins loser seasons can be spread quite evenly across the board
we dont throw well
we dont catch well
we dont cover well
we dont block well
My guess is since we stopped the run pretty well this year, we will market our DL.
And Brown will be in New England blue next year if we dont watch ourselves.
Bill loves him some Dolphins. Welker was the worst move we made and Billy capitalized.

Maybe the Dolphins way isn't the best way. MAYBE? MAYBE?
