Sparano shadow fades only in the offseason

Me? The head is spinning because another offseason has dawned and a handful of Dolphins players are going off on coaches, on each other, on anything and everything they believe is wrong with the organization.

Again.

Over here, you have Ricky Williams whining because, in his opinion, coach Tony Sparano preached too much about scoring touchdowns in the red zone and not fumbling or making stupid mistakes. Of course, Ricky believes this was wasted energy of the zen demon screwu because the Dolphins clearly didn't need to hear about scoring in the red zone or fumbling.

Then Brian Hartline does a radio interview with former University of Miami quarterback Gino Torretta on WQAM and complains the Dolphins are apparently too regimented and stick to the game plan too closely and need to "make some plays off schedule" to be more effective.

And Brandon Marshall finally explains comments he made after Sunday's season-finale in which he said the offense was not speaking the same language and on different pages. I specifically asked him, by the way, to explain what he meant by speaking a different language during his press conference Sunday and he didn't wish to be specific.

But he got specific on the Michael Irvin show, explaining that in his relationship with previous quarterbacks the understanding was that even if a read called for the ball to go elsewhere but he had man coverage, the QB would throw the ball up to him and he'd run under it or outfight the cornerback for it.

Marshall's complaint is that quarterback Chad Henne wouldn't do that, but rather would go through his progressions as taught to him by quarterback coach David Lee.

"Henne, the way he plays the game is he goes exactly through his reads, no matter the matchup," Marshall said. "Then you get to the sideline, and it’s some conflict there because they don’t like it."

When Tyler Thigpen got in the game Sunday, however, Thigpen apparently blew off the proper read and threw it to Marshall anyway. And that made Marshall a Thigpen fan. And it also led to an argument between Marshall and Lee on the sideline.

And all that is fair to say, but I still think if men are men and they want to stand for something and actually help the team while the season is still salvageable, it should be said during the season.

Yet we hear nothing -- with the exception of a hint here or there from Marshall -- during the season. By the way, I respect that Marshall said what he said during the season. He made his points and no one argued or had the nerve to contradict him in public. So he gets a nod for some honesty and openness.

Everyone else ... where'd this stuff come from? Where was it all season?

I say all that to say this:

This is the second consecutive season Miami players go into open rebellion after the season is over. Last year, Joey Porter went on a scorched Earth campaign against Tony Sparano and his teammates that ultimately got him a one-way ticket to the waiver wire -- twice.

Channing Crowder also chimed in with certain complaints the genesis of which I can't even remember now and don't give any import to, anyway.

But all of Porter's and Crowder's griping came after the season.

And perhaps a surface analysis of this now two-year trend is that several players don't especially love the way the Dolphins are run and don't necessarily agree with the way Sparano does thing. That could lead you to believe Sparano has lost the locker room.

You'd be wrong.

It should lead you to the exact opposite conclusion.

The fact no one seems to have the guts to speak up during the season, while they are still under Sparano's supervision, says all those complainers and bitchers -- not including Marshall -- feared saying anything. They feared what Sparano might do. They were wary of crossing the coach while the season was still in flight.

It was only after the season ended and they were no longer under Sparano's control that they went off on the team or teammates or the coach.

Again: When the season was on and Sparano held the reins, no one other than Marshall said a peep and even Marshall tamed his comments. It wasn't until after Sparano was out of sight that anyone felt like they could, you know, speak.

That, like it or not, is control.

It isn't always like that in a football locker room.

Cam Cameron lost control of his locker room around the middle of 2007 and before the year was over, players were challenging him on the team plane and cursing him out in meetings. I know of no such incident with Sparano's Dolphins.

Remember that in Nick Saban final season, he lost control of the locker room. He got into an expletive-filled argument with quarterback Daunte Culpepper during practice and players were questioning his intentions the last three weeks as Alabama rumors swirled.

Dave Wannstedt lost the Miami locker room early in 2003.

Jimmy Johnson lost Dan Marino around 1998, perhaps earlier, and the two waged all-out war in 1999, with most of the locker room siding with Marino.

Yet in-season, Sparano rides herd over Miami's locker room. Players may not like him. It's impossible to get 53 gifted people to like one guy telling them what to do, anyway. But none of them showed much desire to criticize Sparano or anything else until they got out from under his shadow.

Control.

Let's use our 1st-rounder on a guy who's rated the best at his position on the board, WITH A BROKEN LEG!!! We're WINNERS!

Home, where's the garantee with Cam Newton?? I'm not saying he will fail, but for all the Josh Freeman's and Ben Roethlisberger's there's also the Jamarcus Russell's and to a certain extent Duante Culpepper. BIG doesn't GARANTEE success...

D FAN M,

YOU GOING TO KEEP THESE CRAPPY DRAFT PICKS IN YOUR POCKET TO DRAFT UNKNOWN PLAYER LIKE ODRICK AND PAT WHITE.

P.S,,,,,,,,,KATINA CAN BE MY DAD ,COME ON PEOPLE THINK FUTURE NOT MIDDLE AGES .

yes joe i would. my salary would be tripled. id be in south florida. oline plenty of free agents out there. qb can be drafted and bandaid with a vet. rb cant get any worse than what we had this year. everyone said why cowher when i mentioned him in november, they said hes already won one so he wont with another team. now harbaugh and people say no cause he hasnt coached in nfl. well hes hungry and would run a much much much better offense. ireland is still the problem that has to go, tony is already gone

Let's use ANOTHER 1st-round pick on shoring up the highest-paid squad on the team already, the oline. Maybe THIS will work!

Yes, I'm so psyched! We'll have the best oline in the league...protecting a literal terd on the field.

Joe, agreed 100%. Drafting better is a MUST for Miami if they want to even compete with the Patriots and the rest of the top teams. O-line is a total mess. Running back is something they must take care of, draft or free agency. Tight end, Fasano is OK but nothing more. A speedster to keep defenses honest is another need. Another pass rusher. A play making defensive back. Lots of work to be done. LOL!

solari and mcdaniels are the 2 huge free agents we need back. lose those 2 and our d falls way back. id resign icog also if price was right.

"if men are men and they want to stand for something and actually help the team while the season is still salvageable, it should be said during the season"

WHAT?

NO ARMANDO, IT SHOULD'NT BECOME A DISTRACTION DURING THE SEASON....BUT THAT WOULD BE BETTER FOR YOU THOUGH. RIGHT?

just name mike nolan the headcoach..

I think there's a difference between losing the locker room and losing "control" of the locker room. You can keep control with fear of consequences but to get people to go to war for you takes respect and admiration. Which of those two does Tony still have?

D FAN M,

OK,LET'S GET PLAYERS THAT YOU WANT LIKE KITNA AND ALL 35 YEARS PLUS TO PLAY FOR US .

WHAT DID DRAFT DID FOR US LAST 3 YEARS ?

mike nolan,lol

ALoco, I keep the draft picks to draft great young talent. Not to draft unknown players as you call them that don't pan out. It's pretty simple stuff. The top teams have a history to draft good, productive players. The bottom ones don't. That's why it's so important to get our front office situation settled so they can start working on the upcoming draft. That's my opinion.

Brian Billick over Cowher over Hairball. If not, Sparano stays put. Billick would be my choice if we cut ties with Sparano. And, get a new GM, OC and QB ASAP!

billick, come on. first off tony is already gone. harbaugh is the first choice, its his job now if he wants it. he said he would announce where he will coach next week

None of this would be happening if the team was winning. Losing builds dissention and frustration. This isn't unique to our team and it has nothing to do with Sparano. Having said that, what these guys are saying is right. I don't have a problem with them coming out now and saying it. They are just being honest. And nobody is saying it can be fixed. They are just being obvious. Maybe the players are just playing scared that somehow Henning sneaks through to next year and they're stuck with this setup again next year. This problem can be fixed. Make the necessary changes and this team will start winning again and they'll be a happpier bunch.

ALoco, look at Kitna's numbers this year and you'll see that he had a pretty decent season. Do I think he's the long term answer? Heck no. But asking a rookie QB to step in and deliver is kind of difficult. Kitna would be a great teacher and would fill in until our young guy is ready. A bit like Pennington did in 2008. Kitna could do the same thing.

Isn't it interesting how fans want to dump draft picks to get certain players every year and then turn right around and moan about NOT having picks because the team did precisely that.

It's comical, really.

D FAN M,

HOW AFTER THIS SEASON CAN ANY ONE DOESN'T SEE THAT WE R IN DIRE NEED TO SETTLE THE QB SPOT BY ANY MEANS FIRST AND SECOND AND THIRD .

ORTON
DRAFT A QB IN THE FIRST ROUND
KEEP HENNE

dont see kitna. i see collins or palmer

Home, where's the garantee with Cam Newton?? I'm not saying he will fail, but for all the Josh Freeman's and Ben Roethlisberger's there's also the Jamarcus Russell's and to a certain extent Duante Culpepper. BIG doesn't GARANTEE success...

No Offense, Pal
But there R NO guarantees in anything in life

Think if u like Mike Vick or u like Tebow
Take a look at this stud

U want some old overpaid retred
Dude
We Need a Franchise QB

and sad to say
Henne aint IT

Our WRs and the rest
THINKS HE SUCKS
Period

Whatever It Takes
Draft Cam Newton or NOTHING!

I'd be fine with Harbaugh but in all honesty why would he choose Miami over San Francisco?

This is a young guy with a family that's already settled out there. Grew up in California as well. Plus, the Niners have made it clear they'll meet his financial demands.

I just don't see where the Dolphins have much leverage here, realistically.

Here is my take on everything. All of you Monday morning QB's and everyone who thinks they know better. You blame the coach. Players play the game, if they don't execute, they get beat.... Blame the damn Players too! WAA WAA WAA everyboby quit your whining

How can Sparano possibly remain? They are publicly shopping around for something better, a total slap in his face. They should have terminated him first. Now he is in a lose lose situation. He has no chance of gaining the locker room back now if he stays, they've taken away his dignity. Ross's first move with Parcells out of the picture is not showing much class or forethought.

If u think BIG is all Cam Newton has to offer
Than U R A F!@#ing Moron!

... Just Saying

D FAN M,

WHILE THE PATS THINKS FUTURE ALL THE TIME,FAST ,LEAN AND DESTROYING EVERY TEAM .WE STILL TALKING KATINA IN 2011.......

TRAGDY IN THE MAKING

home. what's ^ with all of these dying birds?.1000's.

Ireland must have compromising photos of Ross...why else would Ross be so insistent on him staying?

Morning Buzz is SF has put together the dream package for Harbaugh and his chances of landing in Miami are fading.

...Cowher is the last "Star" coach out there who fits Ross's idea of a game changer who can fill the 20K empty seats.

So, Ross must decide: Do I hire Cowher and lose Ireland & Nolan...or keep Sparano/Ireland/Nolan for another year and risk another .500% season and more empty seats?

LIFE IS FULL OF TOUGH CHOICES!

ALERT,

PLEASE NO BLOGGER SHOULD BRING UP THIS CRAP ABOUT CHAD.P AND KITINA ...WE LIVE 2011.......2011..............2011.WE R GOING TO FILL THE STADIUM W/KITNA ?

He may have the locker room but the game is played on the field & he has certainly lost them there. Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, & the cherry on top at New England. Keeping your mouth shut does not translate to effort or skill on the field.

Home, you're right. I'm a F!#ing Moron and you're the genius. If you're so sure if guys out of college are going to be great or not why aren't you employed by an NFL team? You could make a fortune. Just saying... LOL!!

Anyone else think Harbaugh and his agent are probably just using Miami as a bargaining chip to drive his price up?

I don't think he has any intention of coaching anywhere but San Francisco. It just lines up too perfectly for him.

Collins or Palmer

R U F!@#ing Nuts !?

Why not just bring back Bernie F!@#ing Kosar or some other broken dick

Beam Me the F!@# up Scottie
There is NO intelligent bloggers here

Draft Cam Newton or NOTHING
Period
Exclamation Mark

Wow mando, you came up with that on your own? Huh control, they lost control after the NE debacle or rather in the 3 losses prior to that.

I didn't see an ounce of respect for any of the coaches in those looses.

Further more who had the last word? The players, they made Sparano look like the wounded winged bird he is. Good riddance.

Amazing. Only you could spin this into a vote of confidence for the head coach. Never mind that QB's, receivers and coaches are not on the same page. Never mind that Marshall says screw the play book, just throw me the damn ball. Never mind that the coaches can't make changes to the routes on the fly and defenses know it so they can dictate plays to the offense by changing coverage rather than the other way around.

Nice job of sticking your head in the sand Armando and seeing that it doesn't matter that there are a myriad of problems with the coaching staff and pointing out that all that matters is that no one is willing to talk to the media about it until the offseason. Yeah, that's the important thing.

chemtrails & HAARP elf waves have poisoned them and microwaved their bodies, blogger 2 watt

However
Dont ever expect to get the truth

The birds have been radiated
Either a test or simply collateral damage

Peace Bro, 2 watt

Any player that publicly throws their teammates and coaches under the bus needs to go, it is as simple as that.

A lot of you are crying about the coaches but what we need is more unselfish players.

BM wants to be TO and he will destroy any team in the process unless he changes. No wonder Denver wanted to unload him.

Our minor league owner is not helping things by how he is handling this. Dolfans, pray for our team. This is going to get ugly.

DATE OF THESE PLAYERS BIRTHDAYS;;;

CHAD.P........ 1890
KITNA........... 1888
COLLINS......... 1910
PALMER.......... 1940

Home, haven't you been reading my posts for the last 2 weeks?? I've been saying NOTHING will change until we get a franchise QB. But here's the problem dude. They don't EXACTLY sit and wait at the unemployment office for a phone call. You have to draft one. Teams aren't going to let them loose to sign with someone else. Look at the price we'd have to pay to get Orton or Kolb. Do you thing any of these guys are considered FRANCHISE QB's?? I never said Newton would be a failure, I'm just saying there's no garantee, you can't just get carried away by someone because of his size. That's all I'm saying.

Bill, I know Ireland is a major issue. His bigger is better mantra is killing us. The question will be can Harbaugh have input into the type of player they draft, not just the position that is needed. He will have a different mind set than Sparano. Can he & Ireland coexist? They will need to hammer this out before they bring him on, if he's the guy.

If Harbaugh has no say in the type of guy gets brought in, I wouldn't take the job if I were him.

BRANDON MARSHALL IS BI-POLAR!

Harbaugh and the new Niners GM have the same agent.

It's obvious to me that's where he's going. Makes all the sense in the world from his perspective and he doesn't have to uproot his family at all.

I won't be angry if Ross doesn't land this guy. I don't think we have ANY shot at him and are just being used as a bargaining chip.

Plus Mando, don't you have opinions about your bosses that you keep to yourself or share with a loved one.

It's hard to believe that 2 years of complaining from the players is BS? It's a problem, let's hope Ross does right and gets rid of this dimwit and his cronies excluding Nolan.

I mean Has Tony done anything about Henning yet? No, because to him everything fine the way it is. Upgrade Ross and get rid of Ireland too.

i agree joe. ireland is complete garbage and messing up any progress we stand to make

well then tim ross better give ireland his walking papers and call cowher back.

Should have been #1 Blowfish fan in Montreal lol
At least then u would be known as #1 Dolphin Fan in Montreal

For the record my well known #1 draft pick last season was 6.5 340 lb offensive lineman Mike Iupati

Iupati would have played right next to Jake Long for the next decade

Iupati has turned out to be a Supreme Rookie Talent mauling defensive lineman and getting to the second level and putting linebackers on their back

Now How Would U have Like That #1 Pick For The Dolphins Offense instead of "Broken O`Dick" !?

Agreed about Harbaugh, Tim.

What's Ross supposed to do, offer the guy 50 million a year to go someplace he very likely doesn't want to be?

He's virtually a lock to be the Niners coach and I think you're right that Miami is probably just a bargaining chip in this process.

Tim, to answer your question. Yes, I think they are using Miami.

Bill, Collins is done & Palmer will cost picks and/or a LOT of money. Considering he is under contract to another team, I'd rather Miami go after a guy they can sign rather than trade for.

This eliminates Kolb, Palmer & Orton. Kitna had a good year on an underachieving Dallas team. For 1 year, Kitna may be the best option but they must bring in a young QB via the draft.

harbaugh loves the midwest by the way. wife and all her family are from or live near kc. hes a michigan guy.

Anyone else think Mallett move like Henne in the pocket?

Watched the game last night hoping Mallett would impress me...but I was luke warm to his skills.

He can make some nice throws, but his lack of mobility in the pocket made me think of our current QB...and that's what were trying to get way from.

"Armando out to lunch part 2" should be the name of this blog entry.

last year the defense spoke out because pasqualoni was a joke - that was fixed with better ocaching and we hear zip from the defense.

this year our offensive caoching is awful, the offense speaks out - now we have to get it fixed.

the only way these outbursts speak on aparano and ireland is that they wait until somehting is too broken and apparent to everyone before they fix it.

the pats don't wiat until something is broken to fix it - they launch pre-emptive strikes on their roster and coaching staff before it gets broken.

that's what makes them experts - and that's why miami's brass is barely better than the average blogger here. we depend tto much on genius co-ordinators like nolan in order to fix soething because our head coach is dumb and our gm is average.

Mark, agreed. They can't see what's in front of them until it slaps them in the face.

There is too much buddy system in Miami. Sparano is too gutless to axe one of Tuna's guys. HOw else could you explain Henning not being fired? He can fire Bonamego for poor ST but not Tuna's buddy Henning?

The sooner these crooks are run out of town the better.

Miami also needs some drafting savvy. They need to work the board. They need to trade back a few spots to get extra 1st & 2nd rounders next year. Once you do that the future is set. Watch how many time NE trades out of picks to get extras the following year because teams are more willing to trade future 2nd rounders versus this years. Get what you can for Crowder, Henne, & a DL. Bite the bullet and build 2011 through FA. Great teams are built through the draft & until they have leverage this won't happen.

Craig M....your right..its not unique among losing teams....but you will have to agree...it is usually the last straw before a coach is canned.....

Wait it doesn't matter anyway....Sporano is being humiliated to such an extent that if he were to some how stay he definetly will LOSE his locker room with the first 2 game losing skid....or if he is hovering around .500 after 6 games

I would try to trade Crowder & possibly Merling or Langford but I don't see them fetching much. Plus, you can't really trade them unless you have a replacement ready. It's not like when Pitt released Porter when they had Jerome Harrison waiting & drafted Lawrence Timmons.

We have seen that Dobbins is not a good replacement. If they sign Mcdaniels, I would absolutely trade Merling or Langford for a mid round pick. their contract is expiring next year anyway, may try to trade them to get something in return.

If Harbaugh is out, then the ONLY choice left is Cowher.

If Ross & Cowher cannot come to terms...then we are stuck with Sparano/Ireland for another year and the focus shifts to replacing Henne.

KEEPING HENNING DURING THE SEASON AND IRELAND..AND SPRANO SO FAR '/'SHOWS HOW PARCELLS STILL HAS A HOLD ON THIS TEAM!

Kris, if Sparano is retained, at this point he is such a lame duck, he'll be out by mid-season.

Anyone who wants Mallett (myself included) should be very happy with that performance yesterday.

Yes, he showed some poor footwork that led to that interception at the end. But that can be coached.

What can't be coached was that beautiful throw he made on that 1st TD pass. Right over the shoulder of the db, hit the WR in stride. perfect.

he also threw well on the run on the 2nd td.

Where he made the one mistake has been his achilles heel. with pressure up the middle, he had to move his feet and tried to force it into double coverage and because of poor mechanics - he threw the pick. This is ok, it can be worked with. By the way, this is also the big knock with Tom Brady. He struggles with pressure up the middle and has poor mechanics that lead to a pick. ANyone remember the 2nd miami-ne game last year? Anyone remember the giants-ne super bowl. The pats playoff game last year? He is worthless when you can pressure him up the middle and make him move. But NE builds an offense that takes that away from the defense more often than not.

We should not be moving away from this guy if we have a chance.
