Sparano shadow fades only in the offseason

Me? The head is spinning because another offseason has dawned and a handful of Dolphins players are going off on coaches, on each other, on anything and everything they believe is wrong with the organization.

Again.

Over here, you have Ricky Williams whining because, in his opinion, coach Tony Sparano preached too much about scoring touchdowns in the red zone and not fumbling or making stupid mistakes. Of course, Ricky believes this was wasted energy of the zen demon screwu because the Dolphins clearly didn't need to hear about scoring in the red zone or fumbling.

Then Brian Hartline does a radio interview with former University of Miami quarterback Gino Torretta on WQAM and complains the Dolphins are apparently too regimented and stick to the game plan too closely and need to "make some plays off schedule" to be more effective.

And Brandon Marshall finally explains comments he made after Sunday's season-finale in which he said the offense was not speaking the same language and on different pages. I specifically asked him, by the way, to explain what he meant by speaking a different language during his press conference Sunday and he didn't wish to be specific.

But he got specific on the Michael Irvin show, explaining that in his relationship with previous quarterbacks the understanding was that even if a read called for the ball to go elsewhere but he had man coverage, the QB would throw the ball up to him and he'd run under it or outfight the cornerback for it.

Marshall's complaint is that quarterback Chad Henne wouldn't do that, but rather would go through his progressions as taught to him by quarterback coach David Lee.

"Henne, the way he plays the game is he goes exactly through his reads, no matter the matchup," Marshall said. "Then you get to the sideline, and it’s some conflict there because they don’t like it."

When Tyler Thigpen got in the game Sunday, however, Thigpen apparently blew off the proper read and threw it to Marshall anyway. And that made Marshall a Thigpen fan. And it also led to an argument between Marshall and Lee on the sideline.

And all that is fair to say, but I still think if men are men and they want to stand for something and actually help the team while the season is still salvageable, it should be said during the season.

Yet we hear nothing -- with the exception of a hint here or there from Marshall -- during the season. By the way, I respect that Marshall said what he said during the season. He made his points and no one argued or had the nerve to contradict him in public. So he gets a nod for some honesty and openness.

Everyone else ... where'd this stuff come from? Where was it all season?

I say all that to say this:

This is the second consecutive season Miami players go into open rebellion after the season is over. Last year, Joey Porter went on a scorched Earth campaign against Tony Sparano and his teammates that ultimately got him a one-way ticket to the waiver wire -- twice.

Channing Crowder also chimed in with certain complaints the genesis of which I can't even remember now and don't give any import to, anyway.

But all of Porter's and Crowder's griping came after the season.

And perhaps a surface analysis of this now two-year trend is that several players don't especially love the way the Dolphins are run and don't necessarily agree with the way Sparano does thing. That could lead you to believe Sparano has lost the locker room.

You'd be wrong.

It should lead you to the exact opposite conclusion.

The fact no one seems to have the guts to speak up during the season, while they are still under Sparano's supervision, says all those complainers and bitchers -- not including Marshall -- feared saying anything. They feared what Sparano might do. They were wary of crossing the coach while the season was still in flight.

It was only after the season ended and they were no longer under Sparano's control that they went off on the team or teammates or the coach.

Again: When the season was on and Sparano held the reins, no one other than Marshall said a peep and even Marshall tamed his comments. It wasn't until after Sparano was out of sight that anyone felt like they could, you know, speak.

That, like it or not, is control.

It isn't always like that in a football locker room.

Cam Cameron lost control of his locker room around the middle of 2007 and before the year was over, players were challenging him on the team plane and cursing him out in meetings. I know of no such incident with Sparano's Dolphins.

Remember that in Nick Saban final season, he lost control of the locker room. He got into an expletive-filled argument with quarterback Daunte Culpepper during practice and players were questioning his intentions the last three weeks as Alabama rumors swirled.

Dave Wannstedt lost the Miami locker room early in 2003.

Jimmy Johnson lost Dan Marino around 1998, perhaps earlier, and the two waged all-out war in 1999, with most of the locker room siding with Marino.

Yet in-season, Sparano rides herd over Miami's locker room. Players may not like him. It's impossible to get 53 gifted people to like one guy telling them what to do, anyway. But none of them showed much desire to criticize Sparano or anything else until they got out from under his shadow.

Control.

Craig M - I don't think you can stop with drafting just one QB in this draft. If you want to have a serious competition at the position next year you need to 1) Hire a new OC and QB Coach FAST, and 2) audition as many college recruits at the position as you can between now and the draft while also keeping your mouth shut. Now that Sparano knows who the bad seeds in the bunch are he can move on.

I recall the rationale at the beginning of the season to retool the offensive line was three fold; 1) The priority was establishing better pass protect for Henne or whoever, 2) Shifting a lot of the offensive burden away from Ricky and Ronnie because of durability issues late at the position late in the year (anyone remember last year? little depth behind Cobbs and Ricky at the end of last season), and 3) Money, Jake Grove commanded a huge salary. Given these factors the coaching staff made changes to the offensive line and yes some of those have not worked out but some also have.

Again, going into a QB heavy draft, it makes little sense to tear down this team in the media and with the fans. That would mean Davone Bess and B-Marsh are both failures. No man, I don't buy it, not for a second and I think Ricky and perhaps others did. Sometimes the hardest part of being a manager is knowing who you can trust. This off-season, if Sparano is retained, the organization will have little doubt about that as well. Oh and on those nit-picky attention to details things, tell that to Davone Bess or YB or KD. They know that it is the details that get you there, to that next level. The media Spin Cycle usually cares little for that too. Peace.

I hope he is out of SF but we will see. I can't see Sparano coming back after all of these players say what they did. The question is who is Ross going to listen to more B. Marshall or Sparano. My money is on Marshall. And as far as Thigpen changing plays good for him give the coach the finger and try to create something. In all seriousness that's what I like to see in a QB.

Craig M.....I stand corrected...Sparano was the HC for DIV 1-AA Boston University....He now meets all the qulifications...of leading 3rd tier talent...not thoroughbreads....not million dollar babies....not an NFL team.....we have seen what he can do....and it ain't pretty.

THERE'S A RUMOR IT SAYS,

HARBAUGH HAS AGREED TO COME TO COACH THE DOLPHINS .

Dr...good luck.

The #1 compliment you can give a woman is about her eyes.

...followed by her lips.

Knock it out of the park!

LOL @ kris 11:39

Good Luck Dr. Roberts....Where I work its like a little city....fine proffesional women to the left...fine proffesional women to the right.....

Kris,

First of all I don't know all of the offensive line coaches in the NFL. Second of all it's very unlikely that I would hire an OL coach to be my Head Coach. But sorry Chris, I have to think that after all his years of service that Parcells knows more about this stuff than you and I put together. I don't know the reasons for the hire Kris but you have to admit at the time the fact that Ireland, Parcells and Sparano all new each other well and had familiarity sounded like a great idea. There wasn't won guy on here complaining and whining about it at the time and there wasn't one guy whining and complaining after our 11-5 season. So why is it OK fro everybody to play MMQB now? Hindsigh is always 20/20. Where were all the guys complaining about all the moves AT THE TIME them moves were being made. Exactly....NOTHING!

And guys I realize that Raheem Morris was hired to be defensive co-orodinator but he never coached a single game at the poistion. Surely we're not going to call him a DC.

Also, Mike Tomlim, perhaps one of the best young coaches in the NFL was a DC for ONE year in Minnesota. A lot of people could have questioned that move at the time but it worked out great, obviously!

Where's the article claiming Cowher is out of the picture? If it's true, great! But I don't see it anywhere.

TAKLKS HAS STARTED BETWEEN REGGIE BUSH'S AGENT AND THE DOLPHINS

Harbaugh has "agreed to coach the Dolphins" despite the team not even conducting an interview process or following the rooney rule?

Sorry, not gonna bite on that one.

Montreal...read jeff darlington's twitter feed.

ALoco, where did this rumor come from with Harbaugh?

REGGIE BUSH COMING TO DOLPHINS TO BE NEAR HIS GIRL FRIEND KIM KARDASHIAN .lol

Gotta run fellas.....been fun!

ALoco, what's up with all these rumors you're starting?? Reggie Bush?? LOL!! The playoffs haven't even begun bro.

bleacher report , poizen

Craig, you left before responding. Come back and read my post at 11:02 and try to tell me Miami hasn't tried to already fix the offense 3 years in a row. Thank you.

Hey...rich rodriguez just got fired by michigan...if this whole harbaugh deal falls through we could grab him....NOT

Hue Jackson getting interviewed by the 49ers...Mike Mularkey (remember him?) by the Broncos.

d f m,

don't blame me for the rumors ,blame the media

#1 its was a tweet from darlington

Dear Mr. Salguero

What about Dan Henning ?

Is he in the same holding cell as Tony Sparano ?

Can Dan Henning make bail by retiring ?

Will another Team Bail Dan Henning out ?

Dan Henning....like a warm glass of milk...puts you right to sleep.

Soiled :)

Crag M

Your loyalty is commendable...you would make a great friend....but this is buisness and we can and going down with the ship ended in the pirate days....

True..I loved the Tuna comming here...and who ever he brought here...I was all for it...never questioned a single move....now my roster is filled with ex-cowboy scrubs, a 4 year starter QB who has been programmed.....old RBs.....the worst O-line in the NFL....and a servicable Defence.....

Craig...How many times do you have to touch the stove to know that ITS HOT!!!....We have been burned byu this crew...badly...3rd degree burns....and Parcells leaves because he knows it suck...but you expect his henchmen to stay.....

Mr. Ross is sending a message...I may not agree with it...but i understand it.

Joe - we've already been down that road at 1-15. No thank you. Next.

Notice the only ones to come out and complain about the attention to detail are guys this regime didn't bring in. That is why it's important to take guys who fit the mold and why it's important to keep a system in place. Look at the Patriots, Bellacheat seems to be a attention to detail - grinder type. But his system is in place and they take mostly players that fit the mold. I believe that's also why over the past three years we've sacrificed some athletic talent for more mentally tough guys. I think it could work if given enough time to get the system fully in place and on autopilot.

“I’ve never been a fan of micromanaging,” Jason Taylor said on the air. “If you talk to anybody, not only in sports … no one likes to be micromanaged. In sports, when you’re micromanaged so much, I think it gets to a point you’re so afraid to fail, you don’t give yourself a chance to succeed.”

One name popped to my mind at that point: Chad Henne. Indeed, that’s where JT was going with this critique.

“For a quarterback like Henne … when your quarterback is so afraid to make a mistake or so afraid to throw a pass because there’s a chance it could get intercepted or a chance it could be incomplete, when you’re so afraid to make that mistake, you don’t give yourself a chance to have success,” Taylor said. “It goes back to the old cliché, ‘You can’t steal second with your foot on first.’ It’s stuff like that.

“You have to let people relax a little bit, have fun. You take the fun out of the game, don’t play anymore. It’s not worth playing anymore. I think it bordered on taking the fun out of the game based on the atmosphere, the negative vibe, being so tense.” Berardino

SO CONTROLLING A LOCKER ROOM MAKES A COACH GOOD? Even though they loose 7 home games and look pathetic?
I would rather have a coach that has lost control of the locker room but has control over the game.

Craig M....your ducking me man...lol

OK, we have to move away from this we can't draft a QB in the 1st round because it's too big a chance. I just looked back at every year the Dolphins had a 1st round pick when there was a QB with a 1st round grade on the board since Marino retired. It happened 5 different times when teh Dolphins had a 1st pick, there was a 1st round grade qb on the board and they passed.

The 5 qbs were:

Jimmy Claussen
Brady Quinn
Aaron Rodgers
JP Losman
Drew Brees

The 5 players miami selected were:

jared Odrick
Tedd Ginn
Jamar Fletcher
Ronnie Brown
Vernon Carey

OK, so I grant 2 of those 5 qbs were complete busts and a waste 1st pick. So were Ginn and Fletcher. But 2 of those qbs became franchise players. None of the 5 players Miami drafted when they forfeited the chance to pick a qb became pereenial pro bowlers.

Claussen and Odrick get incomplte grades and can't be judged.

So in retrospect wouldn't it be wiser to draft a Qb who may become all world instead of drafting a guy who may make one pro bowl in his career???

Enough - if there's a qb on the board with a 1st round grade, let's go!!! I rather take that 50/50 chance that the QB becomes all world or busts out completely. After all - went this year without a 1st pick and it didn't hurt our defense much. We now have enough solid support players and we need the gamebreaker and there is no bigger gamebreaker than a QB!!!

MR. ROSS TO CONTAT MR. SPOCK FOR ADVICE..HE WILL ((TELL HIM0))BEWARE THE HYENEA COWER!! VERY SNEEKY HE WILL TAKE 100 MILLION OF DOLLARS FROM YOU AND GO PLAY GOLF AND SUN BATH.

LIKE MR. PARCELS SAID YOU MUST LET ME TAKE THE GROCERYS IN THE STORE IF YOU ARE GOING TOP THE STORE FIRST!

ok cowboys;;;;;;;

DOLPHINS HAVE SPOKEN TO MR GRUDEN ON MONDAY AND TESDAY AND HE ASKED FOR 7 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR AND DOLPHINS THOUGHT THAT WAS TOO MUCH ...HE'S OUT FOR NOW.

HARBAUGH ASKING PRICE IS 7 MILLION DOLLARS ..TO BE CON

It's Weds afternoon and DAN HENNING is still employed...

Marshall is a cancer, dissapointed in hartline too. I knew it was not all on henne, the kid might have a chance if we get some new coaching.

We knew this half way through the season about Henne and now I know why Marshall was so careful about his critique involving Henne. Marshall knows he's playing scared but at the same time you can tell he puts most of the blame on the coaching staff for that. He didn't play scared in college so what happened? It's obvious. The kid isn't a hall of famer but he can play the game of football. Here's hoping we find some real teachers before his career is lost. At least at that point we can make a proper evaluation of his ceiling.

Espn has a article under their rumors section about coaches that the fins are purusing for the HC position. They are saying that Sparano is toast LOL. Unfortunately I'm too cheap to pay the money to see the candidates. I wouldn't object to the chargers QB coach he has helped form numerous qb's (Rivers, Warner, Bulger (when he was good), etc)

MR HARBAUGH HIMSELF PUTTING THE WORD OUT THAT HE WAS OFFERED 5.2 MILLION AND HE SAID NO..........HIS ASKING PRICE 7 MILLION ........I LOVE TO SEE WHERE IS THIS GOING A YEAR FRON NOW IF HE GETS FIRED AND GET PAID 30 MILLION.........

I SAY KEEP SPARANO...

FROM MICHIGAN THAT IS HE WAS OFFERED 5,2 MILLION

Well, let's break it down

Ricky throws teammates, fans, and coaches under the bus

JT finally speaks his mind

Hartline, our THIRD WR speaks out

Crowder spoke out last year

MARSHALL throws teammates and coaches under bus

HENNE throws TEAMMATES under bus, not coaches

This franchise is a joke that ostracized the ONLY 2 stars they've had in a decade

People are feeling sorry for Sparano because Ross is shopping for a new HC???

How is that ANY different than Sparano/Ireland churning the roster on a weekly basis?!

Cow-Head wants complete control over all decisions and his own staff, IE: Nolan would have to go. Stay in the booth, your not that good. Gruden wants 7 million, for what? Unless you bring Tony Dungy in to pick the players ur worthless to. Harbaugh, 7 million for a guy who hasn't coached a NFL game? Is he worth that much? I say NO

5.2 million seems fair....7 million seems high.....lets cal it 5.8 or 6 mil and get this thing done!

You guys crack me up, henne should just do what he wants........LOL yeah right players who do that don't last long. Why don't you go against what your boss says at work? Yeah i thought so.......

The Colts sure did let Manning air it out and take his lumps early. Being made to be so afraid of making a mistake that you can't make anything happen has to be stifling.

No one thinks. Well, what if Sparano quits b/c of the media s*** storm that has been drummed up by the Media and the supposed fans? What then Miami? Will you be kicking yourselves when the Phins have no clear H/C next year and Nolan leaves too? You really think Harbaugh is coming here over SF or DEN? You think Nolan is going to want to deal with this owner as a H/C after this debacle. Kinda like Ricky turning on the team. What other teams will then take a chance on Ricky after what he said? You think another team is going to sign him to a big contract and then risk another Haynesworth episode b/c he doesn't feel he is being used correctly? What say you supposed Miami FANS??!??

IT IS LIKE IN SPAIN THEY SAY OH DOS MEO...THE HYENAE COWER IS SNEEKY WAITING TO TAKE ALL MR. ROSS MONEY THEN RETIRE TO BAHMAHA ISLANDS. CALLING MR SPOCK COME TO PHONE M,R SPOCK!

THE LADY ON BEWICHED TOO CAN HELP

WHY JASON TAYLOR DIDN'T SPEAK ABOUT HIS VIEWS ABOUT REX RAYN'S WIFE TAPES ? WHY HE SPEAKS NOW ABOUT OUR GOOD COACH ?

P.S ,...THESE GUYS JT,HARLINE AND THE CANCER MARSHALL NEVER MISS A CHANCE TO BE IN THE FRONT OF A CAMERA

Joe - we've already been down that road at 1-15. No thank you. Next.

HUH? Are you Craig? I didn't even addressed you.

JT,

THE STAR OF 1-15

Who cares? We suck. We're going to suck until AT A MINIMUM HENNE/HENNING/IRELAND/SPARANO are gone

And we'll probably still suck unless we stumble upon the next Lombardi, and/or Brady

THE END

Dear Mr. Salguero

Why doesn't Mr. Ross put Harbaugh up in a nice place, Have Ireland score a couple of hookers and see how things go from there ?

I'm sure everyone would be on the same page...right ?

Soiled :)

Mando, it's just the tip of the iceberg. If we can figure it out, don't you think the players are at least as smart?
Frankly, I'm surprised it wasn't worse.

As far a new coach goes, Ross with his insistence of keep Ireland (big mistake) and Nolan, he has limited his choices. I understand Nolan but not Ireland. But the overall situation limits many coaches who want their own people. getting a good coach is almost as difficult as getting a godd QB, Ross is making it even more difficult.

knowing the fins are obviously looking at head coach candidates i dont see how sparano can come back here geez ross just fire the poor guy already

I don't really understand this theme that Mando has been sounding the last few days. Players are not supposed to call out each other, the front office or the coach in public during the season or otherwise. It's a team sport. To come out and say Henne sucks as the #1 receiver isn't courage, it's misconduct, and possibly sabotage. I believe Marshall is 100% correct, and I respect his desire to win and his efforts to get the offense on track during the season. But I don't like watching the team turn on itself like an animal caught in trap. Nobody even Marino ever dared to call out Coach Shula during the season or otherwise. And he put together the only perfect record. Not a coincidence. To win as a team, you have to stick togehter when it gets rough. I don't like this.

For $7 million I'd rather have Cowher & No Ireland. He has experience & a proven track record in personnel & winning.

Harbaugh is a new face, hot topic. He is right to demand top $$$ but that doesn't mean we have to be suckers & pay him what we can pay a proven winner.

Ross, make a move & let's get on with it either way. This is getting absurd.

yesterday mando criticized ricky williams for not speaking up during the season and today he says that show sparanos control of the players. so if ricky had spoken up during the season would he be saying sparano had lost control?

This is our answer fellas. Ross has just hired Joe Buck as our HC. Ross just announced it on air by saying "I offered $6 million but he wanted $6 million and a snow cone every day for the first year, so I caved in to the little twerp" Looks like its Super Bowl next year or bust.

Yea....Gruden isn't worth 4 million Dollars.

--He won the SB with Dungy's players

--His overall record was around %500
When HE STARTED DRAFTING the Bucs STOPPED going to the Playoffs (Only two '1 and donez' in 6 years)

--None of the players in the locker room ever trusted what he said.

THE GUY GOES ON TV AND LAUNDERS MOST OF HIS CAREER !

Do you really want him ??

CONFIDENCE, is one of the most significant traits in the ability to achieve any single goal. Confidence is built by preforming a task and galvanized by repitition with continuing success. that being said, last years team was confident until they were shown to have NO quick-strike or big-play potential(saints/colts). miami re-instills confidence in the offseason by aquiring brandon marshall to insure against similar situations. now think!... chad henne and the offense lacks this confidence. why?... the offense needed to build the confidence of their young QB, but took away the ONE reciever henne was confident in throwing to. GREG CAMARILLO! every cook has a staple recipe, the confidence for the offense should have been built around the solid chemistry and confidence that was already in place with camarillo, and enhanced by the aquisition of marshall which would have spawned more confidence! if you want to figure out who needs to go(coaching/front office), find out who was responsible for releasing camarillo. whoever it was does NOT have a winning thought process. this was as bad a decision as was the welker move. next offseason we do NOT need to waste a draft pick on a reciever, bring back camarillo and the confidence, keep one of the two rookies(moore/wallace)and draft o-line(center/tackle/running-back) draft a QB in the 5th round, get rid of david lee. the offensive coordinator needs to go to new england. you know, if you watch the tapes of each game from this season, in order, you can actually see a team that actually led the division and looked great, morph into what it is now, with some close losses to big teams as the main culprit that derailed the season, the will, and the confidence of this years team. by the way, watch these tapes, miami isn't as bad as you think, and neither is henne. good luck to all.

He has control over nothing. He is a puppet planted by Parcells. Hartline is speaking out. Ricky spoke out. Marshall has spoken out. The way this team is approaching this coaching thing is reminiscent of Wanny, Saban & Cameron. The only difference is Sparano is the only one who wants to stay. All the others were happy leaving.
