The Dolphins have a coach under contract at this hour. But they don't necessarily have a coach.
The negotiations I wrote about in the previous entry on this blog were apparently going fairly well around 3:30 this afternoon when the Dolphins decided to call a media roundtable for 4:45 p.m. to discuss the events of the past week and put a smile on all that has made you frown.
But ...
... at around 4:15ish those talks became a little heated, I'm told. They went astray, I'm told in that you had two sides pulling in different directions. They hit a significant snag in that the sides definitely were not agreeing on a final outcome. And so at that time, the hammer was dropped and coach Tony Sparano or his representative let it be known he wasn't comfortable returning to the Dolphins in 2011.
That serious.
And so, as I said earlier, the Dolphins still had a coach under contract because Sparano is tied to the team for 2011. But they didn't have a coach to put in front of the media with owner Stephen Ross and perhaps general manager Jeff Ireland.
That happy family portrait the Dolphins wanted and intended to put on display was not ready for public viewing.
So the Dolphins called off the round table indefinitely. A spokesman said it could be reconvened in five minutes or five days.
[UPDATE: Dolphins have just rescheduled the roundtable for noon Saturday. This suggests the hurdle the negotiations hit earlier has been overcome, or perhaps overcome to the point sides are very confident they will be resolved by noon Saturday.]
That's all I know.
I do not know the particular topic that caused the gap that kept the sides from having an agreement. I do not know if it was just legalese in a contract that eventually will be overcome by the legal experts -- I'm not betting on that one.
I am told, however, that the sides hope to get this resolved at some point.
So a state of uncertainty exists.
And you thought you'd seen uncertainty with the Miami offense? Ha.

Aloco you have much credibility as the national enquirer!

Aloco has connections with the secret service. He knows things before everyone. Its all in his mind of course, but his life is so trivial he hopes that bloggers will look up to him and admire him. Simple.

Posted by: sam1971 | January 07, 2011 at 09:31 PM
Tony really should take the job. I'm not sure Parcells is looking for another puppet with another team.....I bet this entire situation and fallout with owner Ross began when Tony wanted to retain his OC Dan Henning. How dumb is that!

hes right sparano now signed through 2013 hahaha we suck
Posted by: we doomed | January 07, 2011 at 09:32 PM
Bryan, I highly doubt Nolan would have been a problem for any new coach. The problem was, is & will continue to be, Ireland.
How Ross can pick Ireland, a tuna hencman, over a proven guy like Cowher is mind boggling. This is why Steve Ross is out of his league. The NFL isn't like real estate, I think he learned that today.
Cowher, by reports by Jason la Confora, refused to interview until the position was vacant. Prospective coaches don't interview while coaches have jobs. When we hire a coach next year, Ross will have learned his lesson.

Miami Dolphins: Tony Sparano now signed through 2013
by: Mike Berardino January 7th, 2011 | 9:15 PM
A fragile peace appears to have been brokered between Dolphins coach Tony Sparano and General Manager Jeff Ireland.
How long it will last – and how effective they will be as a tandem going forward – remains to be seen in the wake of the team’s failed pursuit of former Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh.
For now, it should help that Sparano’s contract has been extended two years, through 2013, according to a Dolphins source. His $2.8 million salary is believed to remain in the same range, and he will also have an “expanded role” in player personnel decisions.
Ireland, as before, will have the final say in that area, including how the Dolphins will use the 15th overall pick in the next NFL Draft.
“There’s no problem there,” the source said Friday night of the Sparano-Ireland dynamic.
Their relationship dates back eight years to the Dallas Cowboys, where both men worked under shared mentor Bill Parcells. It was Parcells who brought them to the Dolphins, but with Parcells out of the day-to-day picture, things have grown more complicated.
Posted by: Box of Kleenex | January 07, 2011 at 09:39 PM
Parcells like the godfather! He takes jobs to repay favors to asst coaches. Leaves them and moves on! No matter how bad they are.

NEXT WEEK THE DOLPHINS WILL RELEASE THE FIRST 3 PLATERS THROUGH WAIVERS .
Posted by: ALoco | January 07, 2011 at 09:40 PM
They can sign him to 2023, he's still the biggest lame duck coach out there. How do you extend a coach who has shown an inability to do nothing well & not excel at anything? Reminds me of Wannstedt. Extended & he resigned midseason. LOL We could hire any coach right now and get the same results with the exception of Rich Kotite.
God, we are just obsessed with mediocrity. I have no other explanations LOL
Posted by: Joe Schmoe | January 07, 2011 at 09:40 PM
I hope chowder is first to go!

Aloco, enjoy the mediocrity. You seem to enjoy not being a winner.

Aloco I apologize buddy! I see the report on the sentinel
Posted by: erocku | January 07, 2011 at 09:44 PM
i agree joe this move is to appease the morons haha sparano will never coach this team past 2011 if even at all ever again
Posted by: lc | January 07, 2011 at 09:44 PM
In case you missed anything, read about it tomorrow in the National Enquirer.
Joke isn't the word for it.
Posted by: DC Dolfan | January 07, 2011 at 09:45 PM
I say #15 pick ia a .............linebacker! Yay!
Posted by: sam1971 | January 07, 2011 at 09:45 PM
And fyi Aloco, an extension for a lame duck coach means nothing. More likely than not, the writing is on the wall. Playoffs or bye bye. With NE, Pitt & Baltimore, without 11 wins MINUMUM, Miami isn't sniffing playoffs. Which means you, Craig & Bobby can cry it out together next year when he gets canned LOL
Posted by: Joe Schmoe | January 07, 2011 at 09:46 PM
what a freaking disaster
morono for three more years
that should be good enough to kill off the season ticket base
Posted by: test | January 07, 2011 at 09:46 PM
Can't wait to see what Sparano does with the oline next year. Baited breath.
Posted by: DC Dolfan | January 07, 2011 at 09:46 PM
test don't worry, he won't be here that long.
Posted by: Joe Schmoe | January 07, 2011 at 09:47 PM
DC, about the oline, look to see which cowboy linemen are free agents. LOL

Posted by: ALoco | January 07, 2011 at 09:49 PM
Tony's a big boy. He can handle being benched. Like he said, " People like to be proven wrong."
Posted by: b3372yeah | January 07, 2011 at 09:49 PM
Talk to him about what ALoco? How to force the I-formation down teams' throats? If he could just figure out how to go through Ray Lewis. Right through him.
Posted by: DC Dolfan | January 07, 2011 at 09:51 PM
JOE,
NOW IT'S TIME TO GET BEHIND YOUR TEAM ,TS WE WILL LIVE W/HIM FOR AN EXTRA 3 YEARS .2011,2012,2013 .
Posted by: ALoco | January 07, 2011 at 09:51 PM
contracts are meant to be broken, they give extensions just to appease. sparano is done done done by game 10 2011. some people are way too happy with loserse
Posted by: rotor router | January 07, 2011 at 09:53 PM
ROTFLMFAO!!!! Sparano got an extension thru 2013. I'm not arguing with ANY of you dopes ANYMORE!!! Sparano is here for 3 more years. This maybe the BEST thing that has EVER happened to the Dolphins since 1972. Stability, FINALLY. This franchise now has a long term strategy and future. Sweet dreams gentlemen!!! What a GREAT day!!
Posted by: bobbyd12 | January 07, 2011 at 09:53 PM
Forget 2013, let's give him the decade. At least that should be enough time to get some consistent offense.
Posted by: DC Dolfan | January 07, 2011 at 09:54 PM
Aloco, put down the crack pipe man LOL If he makes it out of 2011, I'll be VERY impressed. How naive are you & some of these guys to put any stock into a 2 year contract extension for a duck?
They tried to hire 3 different coaches!!! All said NO. That's the only reason Sparano is still here. The extension is to try to lure a good OC with the thought of having stability. GOOD LUCK! LOL
Posted by: Joe Schmoe | January 07, 2011 at 09:55 PM
Thank god for 12/21/2012! Go mayans!
Posted by: sam1971 | January 07, 2011 at 09:55 PM
SPARANO NEW SALARY............... 3,300,000
Posted by: ALoco | January 07, 2011 at 09:55 PM
People, this team will be improved next year. They have a win or else mandait now. They will def bring in another QB, throw money at the O-line until it is fixed, probably pick up Marion Barber when he gets cut, and draft a guy with speed to back him up, and get the best OC money will buy. Its not like they can afford to do nothing. The Bears were in the exact position last year. Worked out pretty good for them right?
Posted by: Jon | January 07, 2011 at 09:55 PM
What'dya think Joe? Wanna bet me Tony can create an explosive offense by 2020?
Posted by: DC Dolfan | January 07, 2011 at 09:56 PM
Stephen Ross you stupid retard you just tore down this once repectable franchise in a matter of days. AL Davis of the East but worse, your worse than Al Davis and Dan snyder put together. Roger Goodell should fine your butt and send you packing to that puke whole of NYC. Tony Sparano should get up to the podium tomarrow regardless of the situation and tell Ross and Ireland to kiss his ass and walk off. I guarentee 90% of the league and fans would stand up and applaud you.
Posted by: Marc Leddy | January 07, 2011 at 09:58 PM
Here's Bobby on queue to tell everyone he was right about sparano AFTER they failed to hire 3 other coaches LMAO LMAO LMAO
Bobby, are you playing dumb or just the arrogant blind fool? LMAO La off aloco's crack pipe. You're in La La Land.
Before you heap praise on yourself, remember Dave Wannstedt. Good night Betty.
Posted by: Joe Schmoe | January 07, 2011 at 09:58 PM
DC, if you gave me 2025, I'll take that bet.
What about special teams?
