Ross at Dolphins camp Monday, meets with Sparano, Ireland

The meeting Tony Sparano and Jeff Ireland were to have with owner Stephen Ross began in earnest this afternoon.

Ross arrived at the Dolphins facility at 1 p.m. Monday and stayed for several hours -- outlasting some employees that left at the close of business, The Herald's Jeff Darlington is reporting.

I am reporting Ross met with Ireland first and Sparano afterward.

Ross was in the company of club Chief Executive Officer Mike Dee.

It is reasonable to believe the club owner is allowing Sparano to give his version of what happened with the Dolphins in 2010 and a plan for addressing everything that is wrong -- including whether he would fire or relieve any assistants and what his plan would be for addressing obvious definciencies on the team, including the quarterback position.

It has been known for weeks that Sparano's job is on the line. The season-ending three-game losing skid, including the 38-7 loss to New England in the season finale did not help matters for the incumbent coach. A 1-7 record at home is also an issue that Ross was unhappy about this season.

"It was a productive meeting," Ross told Darlington this evening while at Sun Life Stadium for the Orange Bowl game.

On Monday, Sparano met with the media and gave few details on what he planned to tell Ross, with few being defined as none.

“I’m not going to get into that," Sparano said. "That’s going to be between me and Mr. Ross and we’ll go through that. But, I’m not going to get into all or any of those things right now.”

Sparano was asked how he would convince Ross he is the right man to coach the team going forward -- even as potential candidates Jon Gruden and Jim Harbaugh were working at Sun Life Stadium tonight, one as an announcer for ABC, the other as the Stanford head coach leading his team during the Orange Bowl.

"I’m not going to get into my plan with Mr. Ross," Sparano said, meaning he wasn't going to share the plan with the media.

The fact the meeting with Sparano was likely happening one day after the season ended suggests Ross plans to move fairly quickly in making a decision about the coach.

Bobby,

Give me your firsthand experience of what you think of Andrew Luck. Really curious to see what this kid becomes and what you think of him.

Craig M

Yeah Andy Reid probably won't let go of Kolb for anything less then a first rounder and yea asking for 2 was just insane. I heard that too. I was just throwing that out there as what will they do if Miami don't draft a QB.

I mean I expect Sparano to be gone and a new regime always brings in their guy and I can't see anyone wanting to inherit Henne and make him thier guy by his body of work. But even if Sparano is retained I think he makes that change too. He already benched him but Pennington was injured. I think Thigpen had a serious shot at starting but getting shut out on a nationally telivised game runined any glimmer he had.

SPARANO ENDED HIS NEWS CONFERANCE WITH WORD........GOODBY.......

ANOTHER CLUE ,HE COULD BE OUT BUT THAT BEFORE MEETING W/ROSS

Haven't you ever heard of....RYAN LEAF, HASSELBECK, AND HIS BROTHER, TRENT EDWARDS, RYAN FITZ-PATRICK, ALEX SMITH, KEVIN KOLB, JOHN BECK, PHIL SIMS SON, REX GROSSMAN,

Need I go on.....cause I bet I could come up with a TON more bust...if were playing that game

I am indecisive on the HC situation. I like Sparano, but I like the phins more. What I would like to see is:

1. Stability within the organization.

2. Consistent double digit wins like the good ol' days.

3. A superbowl would be nice.

Whatever decision Ross makes, I am going to get behind and hope other fans do as well. Afterall, the man is a self made billionaire, he is probably a little smarter than we are.

HAHAHA ARMANDO YOU REALLY CRAPPED THE BED ON THAT LAST ARTICLE YOU POSTED.

MANDY, YOU GAVE MUCH PRAISE TO THE PATRIOTS AND THEIR STELLAR ORGANIZATION.

YET YOU MISSED THE POINT. WHEN YOU SAID A HALL OF FAME QB ISN'T AROUND AFTER SPOT 15.

WHAT ROUND WAS BRADY DRAFTED? FREEMAN? RODGERS? TO NAME A FEW.

THIS TEAM LACKS EVALUATION SKILLS. AND AN OFFENSIVE VISION.

Ed,i agree. I watched Cam Newton in a game the other day and he was horrendous. All he did when the ball was snapped was run and even then it was for afew yards lost.

Personally,i want a QB who stands in the pocket and delivers his passes with poise and i dont see that with Newton.

Sparano should be given the chance to finish out his contract. He's got one yr left and will have a new oc going into next yr. Io think this will be truly his first yr of doing the way HE wants without the parcel influence, he deserves at least another yr.

you can't coach speed.....

IT'S THE QB STUPID!
Bill Clinton

Miami's talent scout needs to be canned immediately...we need someone with skills to find great players

ANDREW LUCK.........LET SEE THE FUTURE 20 MILLION A YEAR MAN

Running quarterbacks are not the way to build your franchise. Look at Vick. He was great the first 7-8 games. Then a few things happened. 1, he started taking a lot of hits. @ defensive coordinators had enough tape on him they began to figure out his weaknesess. This is a reason I think we should forget about Kolb. Philly would be dumb to let him go, and if they did the price is going to be to steep. Also say the league decides to extend the schedule to 18 games. The likelyhood that a running quarterback stays healthy through that grind is almost zero. Most pocket passers struggle to make it through 16 games.

Aloco.....you need to back away from the bong dude! The Ted Ginn pick got Camoron fired.......that panty-waste is a bust a SF as well. The Odrick pick should get Ireland fired; how do you not know about a 'previously broken leg'; he is a 4-3 end, not a 3-4 DT! What a bust!

Dismissing a QB because he has escapeablity is closed minded and ludicrious.....

Dolphin fans have had their wish of a pocket passer with Marino....and sice he has retired...the game has changed...times have changed.....the better QBs now a days can move....think Big Ben...Aaron Rodgers...Mike Vick...Who by the way spends more time in the pocket than ever in his carreer....Matt Ryan......Flacco....and the list goes on....

Stop thinking that a QB with athletic ability is a "running QB".....think of him as a QB with play making ability...something we sorely miss.....or just hold your breath dill we draft the next Marino

HaHa!, LaPhins!

A Harbaugh/Luck combo...I'm drooling. But most likely wishful thinking.

Let's keep this simple. Who ever chose to draft Chad Henne should be fired. It shows an inability to select talent. My guess is that it was Parcells' decision and he over powered those he was mentoring. However if Ireland was involved and agreed to drafting Henne then he should be fired. Well what about Pat White another debacle! Who wanted him drafted? These are the questions that owner Ross should be asking!

A QB WITH RUNING ABILTY IS LIKE A GUY MAKING LOVE WITH 2 WOMEN EACH IN ONE ROOM AND NIETHER KNOWS ABOUT THE OTHER ,THE GUY HAS TO RUN FAST BETWEEN THE 2 ROOMS

I'm out......

and remember.......

IT'S THE QB STUPID!
Bill Clinton

But there is a big difference between a 'Scrambling' QB and a 'Running' QB.

A Scrambling QB is a guy that stands in the pocket and will only run if ALL other options are unavailable.

A Running QB is a guy that has no interest throwing the ball and instead, will just run,in which case limits the production from the WR's and TE's.

I see Newton as the Running QB,and thats why i would'nt like the pick if selected.

MARK , WHAT SHOULD WE DO ?

Aloco Says:

"THE man who handle the money side of things is MIKE DEE and for him to be at the meeting is very telling."
-----------------------------------------------------

YOU Sir... are VERY preceptive cause MIKE DEE knows NOTHING about FOOTBALL OPERATIONS !!!

He is Strictly a Sales & Marketing guy...

One of the PLATINUM RULES OF LIFE states that...
Whenever a Sales & Marketing Guy is allowed to influence these kind of decisions... COMPETENT PEOPLE ARE TERMINATED.

I really hate to say this...but I now believe that Sparano is as good as
G O N E.
.
.

Kris..escapeability is great. I love a mobile qb. But when this is your number 1 attribute, and we are going to draft you as a first rounder. A guy like Newton is a great college player no doubt. But there is no way to project how his skills are going to translate into the NFL. He plays a totaly different game. For example. His reads are always out of the shotgun. He has two or three pre snap reads and the ball is out. The schemes are basic. How will he do in a pro offense where you have to identify so many things at the line of scrimmage, and make quick decisions with your eyes, keeping them downfield and then go through your progressions? There is a reason that these running quarterbacks have not won a championship. Sure they can beat middle of the road teams. But when it gets thin, and the rubber hits the road. The better teams defend these guys with no problem. The better teams have speed that equalize. They have size, and can tackle. The coordinators are smart, and take away their strength and make them play a game they are not comfterable playing. A game that is in the pocket.
If Newton is your guy, that is fine. I'm just offering my opinion as to why we should stay away from him. I think he is fools gold. uch like Tim Tebow.

I get it Armando. If someone disagrees with you the day before, you censor his later opinions when you are trolling through the blog. Very Democratic and a good way to see varying opinions.

So when Ross asked Sparano about Henning, I wonder if he used the word "tremendous"? That should end the meeting right there.

It's kinda funny. The team is in shambles. Didn't we just lose to three of the worst teams in football at home? Didn't the Pats second string players destroy us? Isn't every sportswriter in America saying Sparano is on the hot seat? And some of you continue to wonder why. I've seen countless reasons on the blog showing how Sparano has repeatedly erred, yet, like puppy dogs some of you are still giving him unconditional love. Whatever reasons or explanations you have, personnel, coordinaters, remember it all comes back to the HC. He needs to oversee and LEAD everyone, including the common scapegoat Henning. Sparano has failed, which is why he is on the hot seat. Notice that all teams that do well do not have coaches on the hot seat. The whole point is to do well, not average with excuses and saying we are 5 players away, that is rationalization, doing well is results. Don't you need to all show results at work? When you get a big HC salary, only results count. This team is not closer, anyone who things so is blind, this team is further away now than it was 3 years ago. I'm of a generation where if you failed the test, there was no make up exam, no do over, if you fail, you fail. Period. Sparano has failed, nice guy yes, I was rooting for him too, but the team is in shambles, and one has to blame the leader not the side show. The sooner we get a competent INTELLIGENT coach, the better. With Sparano this team will repeat all the same issues next year, because Sparano repeats them every year, he does not learn from his mistakes because he has yet to recognize him. Sparano maybe the most likable coach since Shula, but he is also the most ill prepared, green and yellow, the worst combination possible.

ALoco,

We should either give Henne another shot and try to surround him with alot of weapons and a line that can block or we give up on the whole Henne thing and just draft a QB in the 1st round.

Just my opinion buddy

ALoco @8:44 That is the best post ever..Thank you for the laugh. I have tears in my eyes.

MARK,

IN CASE THIS HENNE THING DOESN'T WORK , WE SHOULD PUT ALL OUR EFFORTS TO DRAFT A GOOD QB IN FIRST ROUND OR SIGN ORTON IF HE'S OUT THERE .

Well I suppose it's safe to say that Sparano will be back as the HC. However, there are lots of stuff that needs to be addressed. 1st the OC 2nd the QB coach and then starting to scout for FA and the draft.

I have a feeling that regardless of who is there at 15 we will still trade down. Our draft could look like this:

1st G Pouncey
2nd C Wisniewski or Odowd
3rd QB Kaepernick or Best RB available
4th QB Nathan Enderle or BPA
5th Best RB available
6th Best TE available
7th BPA

Henne is so great bloggers are wanting to get Orton now, LOL! Man people just avoid reality like the plague!

Machiavelli once famously penned that it is better to be feared than to be loved.

When Parcells first approached the practice field on his golf cart, the players and Cameron sat up. They took notice because they feared him. Parcells understood fear as a motivation. He played mind games, he insulted and chewed out players like Simms and LT to motivate them.

Does Sparano instill that sense of fear? It's hard to see that when you're fist pumping over field goals. Sparano needs to take notes from 'The Chin' and 'Chucky'.

Now it's all fine and dandy if the players like Sparano, but really who cares? Playing for a likable guy gets you a 7-9 record and a 38-7 shellacing. Playing with fear and pride gets more mileage.

Actually Germany did not whip the French in WW1 as most people think. The French had a slow start in 1914 but stopped the Germans in their tracks at the Battle of the Marne. This saved Paris and pushed the Germans back. After that France fought well and was not overwhelmed at any point on a "being whipped" level.

ALoco,

I like your thinking mate but i'm alittle against Orton to be honest. He's probably gonna cost a draft pick (possibly a 3rd) and not sure if he's good enough. Dont get me wrong,i think he's ok but is he the QB we really need? I'm not sure.

A guy i really like is the guy in Green Bay....no not Rogers lol but the other guy...Flynn is his name? He looks pretty good.

DARRYL,THANK YOU.

I GOT THE FELLING HARBAUGH IS ANOTHER JUST A COACH WHO GOT LUCKY LIKE PETE CARROL ,STANFORD LOSING 9-7

Cote says it well:
http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/01/03/1998977/miami-dolphins-also-need-upgrade.html

ANY ONE WHO EATS PIZZA TO GO SHOULD GO TO JAIL ONCE A WEEK.

THE PIZZA COMES TO YOUR DOOR COVERD IN VYNAL BAG AND STEAMED AND YOU TAKE OUT IT'D MOSH SOFT CRAP ASIDE THE SAUCE TASTE LIKE IT WAS COOKED W/CAR OIL .

bk,

Whose going to be the trade up partner that's willing to give up thier 2nd rd pick to only move up to 15th?

I really see no one wanting to move up to 15th that badly. The guy has to be a cant miss prospect. Arent many of those usually available at 15th. Think about it.

It's so scary that that pinhead Stephen Ross is actually making football decisions for this franchise. This is the same guy who gave away the homefield heat advantage because he didn't want his old lady friends to be hot at the games.

Only scenario I see for gaining a 2nd rd pick is trading away Marshall and that still doesnt make sense for us.

A great QB does not need to be coached, in fact, he coaches you.

MARK, I GREE W/YOUR LAST POST BUT FLYNN ,GB WILL NEVER LET GO B/C ROGERS CONCUSION .IF HE HAS ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE HE WILL RETIRE .

AS FOR FRANCE STOPPING THE GERMAN,FRANCE WAS VERY SMART THEY LET THE GERMANS COME IN THE COUNTRY WITHOUT ONE BULLET.ALL THIER NICE HISTORIC BUILDING STILL THERE ,THIER WOMEN DID A TERFIC JOB SLEEPING W/THE GERMAN MEN FOR HIGHER PURPOSE AND ENJOYED IT IN MEAN TIME .

NO WAR,MAKE LOVE

Deutschland, Vietnam, and Great Britian,

I was the first to kick France's a s s in 55 B.C.

Ross has to dump Sparano. This is a no brainer. The product sucks. Ross wants fans buying tickets. The Sparano philosophy to offense is pathetic. Henning is Sparano’s guy. Sparano signed off on the prevent offence for the last 3 years and he has zero idea about how to win in the NFL. Besides the Dolphins are boring to watch. Actually painful to watch.

No changes yet?, man WTF.

Should have at least heard something about the lousy OC.

Guys as fars as QB's go, there is nothing out htere right now that exciting. I keep seeing Flyn, Kolb, but man they suck too. Flynn has one good game and we want to trade for him like we have all the other crappy QB's we have tried the past 10 years.

Suck it up somehow and get a QB in the 1st Round, like Mallet, maybe we get lucky and they end up like Flacco and can start for us right away.

Saw the kid from Missouri is not in the draft too, so that might allow them to have another one to choose from

Heck, give away next years #1 and this years and move up in to the Top 10 and get what we want

I'm tired of all the retreads

Ireland has been mediocre at best. The only way this franchise is going to return to relevance is if an offensives aggressive HC is added and if the Dolphins can find a top tier GM.

If you really want a quick fix on offense, hire Josh McDaniels as OC, and trade a pick for Orton. Marshall already knows the system and has worked with Orton before, with great success. That's what I would try to do. You're not getting a QB at the 15th spot, anyone in the lower rounds will need to be developed, and the QB's that will be free agents are retreads, or over the hill guys with nothing left. Is Orton the long term answere? Probably not, but he'll do untill you get that guy, and as sad as it sounds, would be the best QB that has played here since Marino.

Are Jarred Odrick, Koa Misi, Nolan Carrol, John Jerry others picked in last year's draft any good? Somebody here, please, illuminate me!

Sign jocoby Jones from h town

THE DOLPHINS DRAFT PLAYERS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR MEDICAL NEEDS AS THE CASE W/ODRICK PLUS 7.1 MILLION GUARANTEED FOR 3 YEEARS .

MAKE LOVE NO FIGHTING LIKE MARSHALL AND LEE

Odrick looked decent, but he only played 2 games so its hard to tell. Misi is really good and should only get better. Carrol is likely a nickle corner and special teams guy at best. Jerry isn't good as a guard at all IMO. Never gets to 2nd level blocks. Might have to move to RT. Most likely a bust.

Talking about wars, Hitler's was mainly financed by the family von Krupp, one of the actual owners of the World.

I heard somewhere that Josh McDaniels was very good at designing his offensive sets to make the runs and passes look the same and confusing defenses.

Anyone know why Josh McDaniels was dumped?

The von Krupp's are an old family that deals mainly in arms trafficking. ALL WARS are economically motivated. Hitler said,- "I did not want war, it was forced upon me". Check it out.

Mr. Luck should strongly consider returning for his senior year. He has thrown behind his receivers all night, short armed his throws on his designed roll outs and has happy feet under pressure. Granted I haven't watched the kid play all year so I certainly can't give an objective opinion after seeing him for a half of football, but I haven't seen anything so special to make me believe he is going to step into the NFL and be a high caliber QB immediately. Overall his performance has been average.

Thankyou, Jon. I suck at knowing what draft pick is going to be good.

McDaniels thinks he is Bellicheck junior, and let's everyone know its his way or no way. Which you wouldn't think is a bad thing, but when you walk in somewhere never have won jack, that doesn't fly. Same thing happend to Mangini. Plus, trading away a franchise QB and one of the top 5 WR's in the game didn't help either. He's obviously better as a OC then a head coach

Oscar, so do the Dolphins obviously. Don't feel bad lol

Henne will look significantly better with a competent OC, QB coach and offensively aggressive HC.

The only way Henne improves is a complete restructure of the entire offensive system that suits his style.

That however means we committ to him, or draft someone in the 1st round that has the skills to run the same type of offense they restucture too in case he continues to fail, but I agree with Oregon Dolphin fan, he can improve with the right people around him, but that is the hard part, finding those people

Bottom line, they better figure out personel, schemes, etc...and have a plan to fill the roster to support those schemes

Obviously that means new OC, QB Coach and maybe even new HC
