Ross to make last-minute pitch to Harbaugh

I've seen many strange situations with the Dolphins. I call it the theater of the absurd. This one ranks right up there.

Imagine Dolphins billionaire owner Stephen Ross, general manager Jeff Ireland and former Kansas City Chiefs president Carl Peterson on the same private jet pointed toward San Jose, California. All of them are of so vastly disperate backgrounds and experiences. All of them are convinced they are like-minded in their purpose.

And their purpose?

Hiring college whiz kid coach Jim Harbaugh away from Stanford University -- out from under the nose of the San Francisco 49ers.

By offering him around $7 million. At least $7 million.

All this while incumbent coach Tony Sparano, apparently out in the cold despite previous assurances from Ross, waits helplessly  back in South Florida for a fate that seems more likely to include a firiring than a reprieve.

That's how it looks if this ESPN report from late Wednesday is completely accurate.

The report gives me a strange feeling because it shows to what extreme Ross is willing to go to get the coach he clearly has targetted as of 7 o'clock hour (EST) Wednesday to become Miami's next head coach. (That is not a bad thing, by the way, but the timing is intriguing considering his search began Monday.)

Ross would be making his second run at Harbaugh because I have confirmed the Dolphins spoke with Harbaugh already and he wasn't all that impressed with their first pitch. The fact is the Dolphins felt they had other options than Harbaugh after that first, failed pitch because I have confirmed the Dolphins were planning to make a run at Jeff Fisher.

But Fisher is apparently staying at Tennessee -- although not official. Harbaugh, meanwhile, wasn't totally blown away by the San Francisco 49ers in a meeting he had with that team Wednesday. So both sides are giving each other another chance Thursday morning.

This bothers me.

It bothers me because Ross is trying to create a monster.

Some background: I have confirmed Ross met with Dolphins consultant Bill Parcells over the weekend as my column last Sunday said he would to discuss the state of the team and gain advice on a next move. And a person whose been told some details of that meeting tells me Parcells told Ross the team is capable of getting into the playoffs if he's patient and stays the course for 2011. Ross indicated to Parcells he was going to give both Sparano and Ireland one last year in 2011 to turn the Dolphins into a playoff team.

But on Sunday, the Dolphins got pummeled by the Patriots and, as this ditty said, that seemed to change everything for Ross. Ross decided to keep Ireland but try to upgrade from Sparano.

So where's the monster?

Continuity and change are opposites. Ross is trying to make them brothers.

Ross is effectively trying to put a new coaching head on the remnants of the personnel department body Parcells left him in Ireland. He is trying to match Harbaugh with Ireland. He is trying to make the new coach the face of his franchise and putting him atop a personnel department that gave the Dolphins a 7-9 record in 2010.

Here's a question: How is it Jeff Ireland has been completely spared of review but not Sparano? How is it the coach is up for being replaced because he didn't get enough out of the players, but the general manager who provided the players that didn't deliver gets a vote of confidence?

What about Ireland made Ross tell Bill Cowher -- BILL COWHER! -- "we want you but only if you accept coming with our general manager already in place."

Are you kidding me?

There are, of course, no sure-fire moves. You should remember there has been no Super Bowl winning coach who won another Super Bowl with another organization. But, you should also note that not too many college coaches, which Harbaugh is, have made the successful leap to the NFL lately.

At any rate, Thursday should be interesting.

Ross, Ireland and Peterson will make their pitch to Harbaugh. Ross will offer to throw gobs of money at Harbaugh, certainly more money than either San Francisco or Denver are likely to offer. Ireland may promise to get Harbaugh the type of talent he failed to get Sparano. And all of them will try to Harbaugh a comfort level with a club structure that seems strange perhaps only to me.

Ross is on the line here. He's picked his sword. He has decided to listen to Peterson and not Parcells. He has annointed Ireland while casting down Sparano. And now he has one last hope of luring the attractive coach he covets.

We'll see what happens.

sorry mando your boy TS is gone! bring JH to clean up this mess...

3 Million dollars buys a lot of pizza dough!

Idk DB, I'll tell you Sparano really lost control of this team weeks ago. I wouldn't be for plan b at all or a 2 year contract extension for a 25-23 coach.

My point is that this whole thing looks bad from the stand-point of how it been done vs how it should have been handled.

Tony had his turn, subpar HC that made no effort to correct the deficiencies or to replace his OC mid-season when it would have counted.

That's my two cents.

Miami close to landing Harbaugh, firing Sparano
Jason Cole

By Jason Cole, Yahoo! Sports 2 hours, 9 minutes ago

The Miami Dolphins are on the verge of hiring Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh to be their next head coach, according to multiple sources.

The team has yet to fire current head coach Tony Sparano, however, multiple sources within the Dolphins organization said the firing appears imminent and that several assistant coaches have already left the staff as of Thursday morning.

Dolphins officials declined comment.

The San Francisco 49ers have “lost Harbaugh” in the past two days after believing they could strike a deal, according to sources within that organization. Harbaugh interviewed with 49ers owner Jed York and new general manager Trent Baalke earlier this week.

The 49ers were shifting their attention to former Baltimore Ravens coach Brian Billick and other candidates as of midday Thursday, a source said.

Harbaugh is one of the hottest NFL job candidates after posting a 12-1 season at Stanford that culminated with an Orange Bowl victory on Monday. He’s 29-21 in four seasons at the Pac-10 school.

Sparano, who has a year left on his contract, is 25-23 in three seasons. The Dolphins finished 7-9 this season, and were 1-7 at home.

was his confidence shot last year when all they had to do to make the playoffs was to win the last 3 games? what did henne do? he choaked. they lost the last three and he did the same thing he did this year threw picks and cost them the game. bottom line is that is what he does. he is not elite, he is not a franchise qb, he is very average at best.

I AM SURE YOU CAN BUY A NICE PIZZA PLACE IN FL AND HIR RIZZI AND PASQUALONT AND DAN HENNING TO MAKE SOUP.

LOOF FOR JASON TAYLOR AND RICKY TOO START SAYING THEY WANT TO PLAY HERE!

Stop with speculation, its a done deal

I believe the Sparano "lost the respect" of his players thing has been blown way out of proportion. Both Ricky and JT only staed they didnt like the "micro-managing" style.

Guys, that's a looong ways from assumming it means his players no longer respect him. Both Ricky and JT endorsed him other than the micro-managing thing, which is very correctible.

Hell, there were a few things about my parents I didnt like but it didnt mean I no longer respected them. LOL............

You want to know what probably saved Ireland's job? He was probably the only guy in the draft room three years ago saying draft Matt Ryan when the other idiots in the room said no let's pick Jake Long instead. While Long is a great player, he can't throw passes or score touchdowns. Not having a good quarterback in the NFL will get the head coach fired quick. Too bad Sparano had to find out the hard way. When you passed on the franchise QB (Ryan), you basically fired yourself. You won't see any more NFL teams winning superbowls like the Ravens did with Trent Dilfer. Without the right guy at quaterback you're dead.

If I was a top tier player (or their agents) who'll be available in the next few years, I'd take notice of the Dolphins because their owner pays!

1. $1.1B for the team
2. $7M/yr offer for a rookie coach
3. $50M for Marshalls
4. $43M for Dansby

Extra Bonus: free Broadway show!

P. Manning, are you paying attention?

Do we know for sure that keeping Nolan is part of the Harbaugh package?

I like our Defense...there are a few holes, but the entire scheme is solid and Nolan seems to command it quite well.

If we get Harbaugh, keep Nolan, and completely revamp the Offense....I will be a happy man!

dolphin77, I dont want to get personal on you, but if your going to state facts put thought into them. henne was not the only guy on the field. Henne was not the OC, Henne was not blocking on the O-Line to protect himself, although sometimes it looked like he was. MARSHALL SAID IT HIMSELF, he was specifcally told to go through the exact progression called, do not break it or else. Until he has protection, and good play calling and a running game that works how the hell can you blame him for everything? You make no sense.

DB,

By control I meant W vs L not what the players though, but by how they played.

Again, I am not saying he is the answer, but for people to blog this crap about HOW BAD HE SUCKS AND ONLY HE SUCKS is ridiculous.

C'MON MAN!!!!

d-dense,

Maybe I fall underneath the category of when you're stupid youre the last to know. LOL

But most are stating we quit against the Pats, IMO I believe it was more lack of talent compounded by being outcoached than they quit.

Thats what I saw and we wouldnt be the only team this year pounded by the Pats so effortlessly it "appeared" we quit! LOL

Come on Poizen anyone can see Henne sucks.

For all the fans that wanted Wayne to sell. Look what we have now. Offering Harbaugh $7 million, telling Cower to take Ireland as part of the deal. Ross is all glitz. put on a show. The whole organization looks like a bunch of horses azzes. what do we have if Harbaugh turns them down. Do we think Sparano is going to give it his all. What an embarresment

DB,

Sprano receiving an extention would be the only wat that he could be brought back at this point.

I'm not endorsing that, just saying that's the only way he would get ANY credibility back.

Dont feel sorry for Sparano. He does the same thing to players all the time.

Guys,

If Jim Harbough is such a great coach and widely regarded as the hottest college coach on the market....why is he only 29-21 in 4 seasons in Stanford??

I'm not criticising the guy because i dont want to pretend i know college football. I just want to know why he's as good as everyone says he is...

Good Night all, I'm out, thanks for the discussion.

I was completely useless today. Got nothing done. Thanks everyone, we might have a new coach, but if there's no electricity in my house, how can I appreciate him?

Sorry the previous post was intended for D-dense

DB,

I agree, it's appears we quit. That says a lot about the coaching don't you think?

It's also all these blown picks from Parcells and Ireland. Whats Pat White up to these days?

WELL ROSS' PERSONAL PLANE IS ON THE MOVE...

GOING TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA...

HERE'S THE LINK:

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N510SR

Wondering if Hue Jackson is in that part of town...(Roonie Rule)...

Thoughts?

JB,

I agree with what your saying as well. How do you bring him back without it?

Pat White is under minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals....

OK, He's headed from San Jose to Burbank...

Mark,

Ross is enamored with Harbaugh because of the Michigan connection. If we get him I hope the best. Because like I said to ALoco the only colors I bleed are aqua and orange. However those are interesting stats or better stated, lack of stats you brought up. LOL.........

DB,

I think it's also the fact that he W the Orange Bowl and he went 12-1 this year vs his whole 4 year record.

As far as the phins quitting against the pats.

They beat the Jests 45-3, and the Bears 36-7 in a blizzard.

Maybe the Pats are just that damn good.

yes dolphins officials still in cal where they are expected to interview hugh jackson, to comply with rooney rule then make the offer to harbaugh.

Yeah Jb that's true, but the Lions and the Browns?

JB,

Thats exactly what I was stating! You would also have to assume those teams quit on thier coaches too! LOL.............

DyingBreed,

Hey dude,i told you i know bugger all about college footie LOL.!!

d-dense,

The reason we lost to teams like Lions and Browns wasnt that the players quit. Thats how badly our offense sucks. HUGE DIFFERENCE! LOL..........

Broncos want to interview Harbaugh....

Mark--

His job at Stanford is considered successful because of the difficulty in winning big there. They have some of the most rigorous academic standards in the country and unlike some places, they do NOT treat it like a football factory and make it easy for their athletes to avoid the books (and good for them for that).

Stanford was completely in the dregs when JH took over, so to get them at this level is a pretty remarkable job.

That said, I'm not about to tell you he'll come into the pros and replicate that success. We've been just as enamored with other big names in the past only to see them flop badly.

But that would be true of ANYONE they brought in. There are no guarantees even if we badly want to believe otherwise.

Guys,

To be honest I dont know who the magic pill for the Dolphins is. But I do know for certain it has to begin with better decision making abilities at both ownership and the GM position.

The franchise demise began with Huizenga and here's to hoping it ends at Ross. If not, prepare for another decade of mediocrity. That all I know! LOL..........

dr. roberts,

Thanks for the info buddy

I guess the only certainties in life are death, taxes and the Dolphins going through a whole season unbeaten...

dr Roberts,

Great info! LOL................

God,I hope Ireland didn't ask Harbaugh if his mother is a ho. Maybe that's why Peterson went along.

D-dense,

Personally I believe it's the philosophy of "being there in the 4th quarter" or or giving ourselves an opportuniy to win in the 4th quarter".

I believed in those for the simple fact that was our team and I am a true fan and get behind them in what they do. Unfortunately that didn't leave us much wiggle room for mistakes.

I still beleive Sparano was and is a players coach. He is a stickler for details, but what employee truly loves everything about their boss?

LOL @ LA

Ireland definitely getting more bad press with all this.

Look Sparano is not coming back after all this drama, if Harbaugh doesn't take this job it will be someone else but it won't be TS!! Guarantee it!!

Anyone else find it odd that Bud Adams (Titans owner) is saying he's still "evaluating" Fisher even after apparently taking his side in the Vince Young dispute?

If I'm Fisher, I'd seriously be looking to get the hell outta there. Title or not, this is a guy who is pretty much universally respected around the league as a great teacher and a coach that attracts some of the best assistants in the game.

If there were a ton of opening this year, there would be a line for him if he was out there.

Just curious to me they haven't made it official he's back in Tennessee.

THE NEWS WE'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR CAME IN!!

One Marion "Shug" Knight has been arrested in South Central Los Angeles for the murder of TUPAC SHAKUR!!!

This is too much to handle.

From what I've read, the Titans are waiting to see if any team wants to pick up Fisher in exchange for money/draft picks or a combo of the two. He has one year left on his deal. Depending upon how things work with Harbaugh, I have read the 49ers may make an attempt for Fisher. With no Gruden/Cowher, I think Fisher's value went up, and the Titans know it. Denver making a LATE run on Harbaugh....

THE MORE WE TALK ABOUT OUR COLLAGE GUY THE LESS WE FEEL GOOD ABOUT AND IT MUST BE THE SAME FEELING ROSS FEEL .EVEN SF OFFERED HIM ONLY 4.5 MILLION AND WE DON'T KNOW WHAT SAID TO THAT SO I AM DECLARING HE WILL NOT COME TO TOWN .

Yeah, but, who killed Biggie?!

http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/story/suge-knight-arrested-but-not-for-tupac-murder_1193796

P Diddy. Both Tupac and Biggie wanted to leave their managers and start their own thing. Diddy and Suge couldn't just let their meal tickets walk out the door.

THE COLLAGE GUY IS AFRAID OF THE PATS AND THE JETS .HE'S SAYING TO HIMSELF ,WHEY IN HELL I SHOULD FIGHT THE BRADY BOYS WHEN I CAN GO TO PLAYOFFS EVERY YEAR W/SF WITH RECORD OF 7-9

Was Fisher higher on Ross's list than Harbaugh??? Will that news of TN not 100% on Fisher coming back change anything???

Marc, why you wanna burst my bubble like that? What have I ever done to you?

How do we know the Harbaugh stories are true? Damn Internet is a lie!

Sorry man. I didn't mind TuPac so much..Biggie, on the other hand...Tragic

Danny Rodriguez, guaranteeing things again that he has no clue about. So your saying Sporano will walk away from 3 million dollars?
