« Is it the money that drives Jim Harbaugh? | Main | Dolphins' ridiculous order of business continues »

The biggest loser? Stephen Ross

Joe Robbie had issues and some of them came out of bottles of alcohol. Wayne Huizenga was duped by Jimmy Johnson, Dave Wannstedt, Rick Spielman, Nick Saban and then duped Bill Parcells.

Stephen Ross?

He's the worst of all.

In the past week, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has turned the bitter disappointment of a 7-9 season into the good ol' days. He has lacked wisdom. He has misled and deceived. He has overestimated. And those were his resoundingly good moments.

Mostly he has embarassed the Miami Dolphins, his coach, his fans, and himself.

In a nutshell, he has stunk like a skunk.

Ross arrived back in South Florida early Friday morning and landed his private jet at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. He had spent the previous 30 or so hours trying repeatedly trying to convince Jim Harbaugh to become Miami's new head coach. By all reliable reports, he failed.

Ross couldn't sway Harbaugh in northern California.

Ross couldn't sway Harbaugh's agent David Dunn in southern California.

Ross took a giant swing and whiffed. He also whiffed on Jon Gruden. He also whiffed on Bill Cowher before that.

So Ross returned to South Florida a defeated person. But he mostly returned to South Florida a reviled person.

Reviled, you might ask? Yup.

Consider:

Remember I have reported to you Ross met with Bill Parcells on Saturday to ask his opinion of what to do with Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano. He left that meeting after indicating to Parcells that he was keeping both the general manager and coach. And then he went about the business of trying to replace the coach.

So Ross has crossed Bill Parcells.

It obviously can be argued Ross changed his mind after that Saturday meeting and reactied to Sunday's 38-7 defeat at New England. That one, after all, could have caused the owner to reconsider what he had told Parcells.

Wrong.

You see, Ross met with Sparano for several hours on Monday. And when he left that meeting, he gave Sparano the strong feeling that he would be retained. And then Ross went about the business of wooing several coaches, particularly Harbaugh.

That's his prerogative, right? He's just doing his due diligence, right?

Well, sure. But why mislead and misdirect? Why give an indication that points north and then go south? Why sully the honor of your word with men who value honor and the bond of one's word, men like Parcells and Sparano?

Ross could have easily left his meeting with Sparano by saying, "Coach, I understand you had issues this year and I understand everything you've just explained, but it's my duty as owner to go look around for the best coach I possibly can. So I'm going to take the next couple of days to do exactly that. I hope you understand and can be patient while that process plays out. If you can't be, I understand that, too."

Sparano would have had no choice but to accept that. And he would have respected the way Ross was handling it. But Ross never uttered words even remotely close to that. He just smiled and glad-handed Sparano and upon leaving his company, went about the business of trying to replace him.

However you feel about that -- even if misdirection doesn't bother you -- the process Ross then undertook was, well, kooky.

He approached Cowher and reportedly offered mega-bucks to get the Super Bowl winning coach. But he wanted to saddle Cowher with an unaccomplished general manager and defensive coordinator Mike Nolan.

Is anyone surprised Cowher turned Ross down? Please speak now if you are suprised. (You are alone if you raised your hand. Go face the wall.)

Ross also reportedly contacted Gruden or his "people" to gauge his interest. Gruden's interest is said to have been located at around the $10 million range. Outrageous, right? Even for a great offensive mind and former Super Bowl winning coach, that price tag is exorbitant.

But Ross is a billionaire three times over. He just offered around $7 millionish to Cowher. What's another $3? That's a total of $12 million over four years. That was too much for a multi-billionaire? That's like shopping for a Rolls Royce but walking away for not wanting to pay extra for the air conditioning.

Then came the Harbaugh debacle. This one makes 38-7 seem palatable.

Ross made a run at him here in South Florida and got rejected. And then Ross flew across country to San Jose, California to make a run at Harbaugh at his home turf. And despite offering more money than anyone else, Ross still couldn't close the deal.

A warning: When or if Ross finally speaks on this topic -- he refused to do that Friday morning when his plane landed -- he will likely say he never really offered Harbaugh a deal. He will probably paint this fiasco of a trip as an exploratory mission to feel out Harbaugh. It was, he may say, an interview of Harbaugh.

In truth, it was a Harbaugh interview of Ross. And Ross failed the interview if nothing changes in the next couple of days and Harbaugh does not run back to the Dolphins to become their coach.

So now Ross goes back to Sparano. I would tell you that was his fall-back plan the whole time. Not true because that would require you to believe Ross had any plan to begin with. I will not insult you with that.

Ross told Sparano upon leaving that meeting that he would get back with him on Tuesday and it would all be resolved by then. Tuesday came and went. Wednesday came and went. Thursday came and went. And the two had not talked.

Sparano was reading accounts of what was happening in the media. Of course, Ross may tell Sparano those accounts were wrong and he never talked to three different potential replacements. The owner may tell Sparano he has his confidence and it's always been that way.

Sparano is smart enough to know better.

And here's the kicker:

When Ross went on his cross-country coach search, even as he hung Sparano out to dry by offering a job that was still filled, the owner was something of a hero to one segment of the fan base. Fans that wanted Sparano out appreciated what Ross was doing regardless of the slimey manner in which he was doing it.

It angered fans that saw it as a classless, low-life, back-stabbing move. But it made fans of change enthusiastic about Ross.

But having failed to successfully make change, Ross has now alienated fans that didn't appreciate the manner he was going about trying to make this coaching change ... and he has now alienated fans that wanted the change he seemed to be working on but failed to accomplish .. and he has now aliented fans that didn't want any change to begin with even though there is no change being made.

He's solidified the entire Dolphins fan base! Everyone hates Ross for one reason or another.

He either embarrassed you or he embarrassed you.

Maybe Ross should offer to sell the team back to Huizenga. Or even Robbie. Either would be better than him. And, yes, I know Robbie is dead. He still had a better week than Ross.

So true.

S Ross should sell the team today. He is a disgrace and knows nothing about owning a football team. All we have now is Dan Snyder 2.0. I thought people of his ilk were supposed to be smart but its obvious if Ross' parents weren't rich he would have been cleaning streets for a living.

next thing you know he'll be trying to get south florida taxpayers to fork over $200M to refurbish his stadium... oh wait...

Ward (Armando)
Don't you think your being a little hard on the Beaver.

Spot on Armando. Thank you for saying pretty much everything THOUSANDS of Dolphins fans feel right now.

The only thing you left out is how we will react to this garbage:

WONT GO TO GAMES

WONT BUY DOLPHINS MERCHANDISE

Add to the list of failings the established football fact that a coach on a 1 year contract is known as a lame duck. We all - Mr Gross excepted - know how that ends up & it isn't good. Look at it this way, we will be well placed to draft Andrew Luck next year!!

if s ross wants to improve the fan experience how about he lower ticket prices

he also should give sporano a contract extension so he'll be able to sign free agents, coaches, etc.

He should still fire him and bring in another coach. Tony has been neutered.

Wow... This is just plain pathetic. I will however rally behind Sporrano. He has shown to be a solid guy. I really would like to see hum get an extension and a viable OC. I believe that once this roster is full of 'his guys' he'll have success.

I hope he turns this thing around then gets offered lots of money to coach elsewhere and walk.

Armando,

Parcells an honorable man?

What have you been smoking? Parcells is the complete scum that left Sparano and Ireland out to dry when he realized his experiment had failed and skipped town while collecting another 4 million next year and consulting for other teams.

As to Sparano, how can you feel sorry for a guy that was to collect 3 million dollars this year regardless of what happened and being a fraud as a head coach. He is so overrated and overwhelmed. As thousands of fans have already stated, he is an offensive line coach that was promoted by Parcells to HC as his puppet. He had no hc experience in the NFL and once the last place schedule of 2008 was replaced with a normal schedule, we have seen his true record 7-9 followed by 7-9.

I do not hate Ross for trying. I only wish if you are going to buy a sports team, that you at least understand the sport enough to make intelligent decisions on your own without the likes of scum suckers such as Parcels, Peterson and Ireland.

His only mistake is not hiring Cowher because he wanted to bring his own personnel man and replace the useless Ireland. I believe we must thank the smelly tuna for that one as well for convincing him to keep Ireland, is your mother a ? The very questions tells you how tactless and classless this individual is.

Either way, the fans are the real losers here. Another frustrating season likely 6-10 with an overrated offensive line coach masquerading as a HC for the last time.

Take care

How likely is it that any successful coach--like a Gruden, Cowher or Harbaugh--going to want to join an organization that would show so little honor in its treatment of its head coach. This has done damage to the organization's reputation among perspective coaches that will be hard to undo.

:::::: Standing Ovation ::::::

Well put Armando!!!!

However the media dress the story up we're still not a very good football team that isn't very well coached. That's what's got lost in all this - we're lightyears away from the Jets let alone the Patriots and we won't be getting any better this year

The biggest loser?

The Fans.

Another year of the Tri-Dummies!!!!

6-10

Biggest embarasement coming to Ross - 50,000 empty orange seats for home games. Would you pay to watch the garbage they are going to put out??

this team is so disfunctional from top to bottom. Letting Sparano twist in the wind and actively go out and court another coach to be your head man and then not seal the deal has set this franchise back so much that they may never recover under steve ross. What repitible coach or football man will ever work for Ross knowing the way he handles his business. Im predicting a 1-15 year or 2-14 at best and watching how the players will not preform for lame duck sparano will only reward us in one way. Hello Andrew Luck in 2012.

I attend a road game every year and have been to many venues including Detroit, Buffalo, New England, Cincinnati, New York, Cleveland, and Seattle. Ive also been to many home games flying to Miami to do so Next year i will cheer on the dolphins as i always do, but they are not getting my money to attend a live game. I cant support the circus like atmosphere that has now been created by an owner, coaching staff and general manager. I hope the Fins can turn things around soon, but this manuver has me doubting that.

Now Next Year The Dolphins will be in a Coaching Hunt all over again....as the Players know the Coach is a Lame Duck...

YES....we are ALL the biggest Loser....but at least it looks like your buddy gets to stick around Armando.....now if only Jason Taylor would come back to town...you guys could be like the "clap, clap....THREE AMIGOIS"!

"And, yes, I know Robbie is dead. He still had a better week than Ross." Love that statement!

And yeah, it is funny how he wants to have taxpayers pay big bucks for his stadium and in the same time is throwing money around for coaches like there is no tomorrow.

Poorest sign of leadership I have ever seen, I expect Carl Peterson to be partially to blame, he already runied the Chiefs franchise.

Not a happy fan

-

I'm sure the message will get accross to Ross in one way or another by all.

A.F.C.East had two teams with class, Miami and Buffalo, not any longer. N.F.L.is shaking heads over what is taking place in Miami. Interviewing coach's in public when you have a coach, at least do it behind closed doors. Shame on you Miami for disrespecting a man who worked his tail off for 3 years trying to win with the junk he was given. Classless!

Anybody know the lowest attendence of an NFL game? We will shatter that record next year.

Shame on Ireland who as a G.M.let his coach be treated in that manner. Or maybe Peterson is the G.M.

Armando,
I couldn't agree more with your rather brutal assessment of Ross' people management skills. Now the only way for him to get out of this mess is to give Sparano an extension.

Ross could give away tickets next year and I bet many fans would still stay home. What a disgrace. I am totally embarrassed to be a Miami Dolphin fan!!!

We didn't know you were at the meeting with Sparano and Roos.

Ross should make the season free of charge for this mess, and give TS,Coaches,Players and Fans a public apology. How about Jeff Ireland where is this clowns loyalty?

All too much embarassing...

Maybe the only good thing is Dolphins won´t have to pay for former and current GM and HC.
But, as you said, if Ross is a billionaire, it wouldn´t matter ...

Mando, I suggest a NEW POST TO CLARIFY some fundamental ISSUES. In your oppinion, who was responsible :
1) for the failures in selecting bad picks (ex.: W. and J. Allen, Ted Ginn, Pat White, J.Beck, Henne...) / priorize wrongly (ex.: J.Long instead of Matt Ryan):
Parcells or Ireland ? Was it also Sparano´s fault or not ?
2) for choosing a bust like Henning for OC: Parcells, Ireland, Sparano ? All of them ?

Parcells is out, Ireland is in. Henning is out, Sparano is in.
Because until we clarify WHO was responsible for each failure, we can´t clean the garbage,
don´t you agree ??

PLEASE, ANSWER THIS ONE !

Hey Buffallo Bill...why don't you go find a bills blog....you guys got enough troubles.....

Should be plenty to discuss there...in bills land....Of course I have no idea what that would be...because I DON'T GIVE A DAM ABOUT WHAT THE OTHER 31 TEAMS ARE DOING.....

What do you expect, the guy's a New Yorker!!!

@Hey Krissy,at least we have class!

But he's still better than Al Davis!

Ross = Ford.

Miami = Detroit.

Total embarrassment. No wonder Parcel's left. You will all be crying for him in your sleep. Get used to 1 - 6 win seasons as long as Ross is here.

Question. What coach is going to want to come and work for a) Tony Sparano or b) Ross after this debacle. And your GM, well he is a snake in the grass to say the least.

Why does everyone assume that Ireland threw TS under the bus?

Maybe one of the reasons that Tony didn't get the ax right away is due to Ireland talking him up to Ross.

Ross is a bucket of slime. I knew that as soon as he started selling little bits of the fins to all those B list celebrities. As far as I am concerned he should start looking for a buyer because he has done some major damage to this franchise.

That said I am still a huge Dolphin fan and will always be.

I Think Dees has something to do with the celeb stuff.BUT HE'S TURNING THIS TEAM TO A CIRCUS. WELL WE NEED CLOWNS SO ..WE NEED TO SIGN OCHOCINCO..BRETT FAVRE OR VINCE YOUNG..AND GET REGGIE BUSH..LOOKING FORWORD TO THE 2012 SEASON...NEXT YEAR IS JUST ANOTHER YEAR LIKE THIS ONE WAS...NOW WE WON'T BE ABLE TO WIN ON THE ROAD..SOMETHING TELLS ME WE START 3 AND 5 THAN NOLAN IS MADE COACH..

I bet Big Tuna is disappointed with tuna helper. Showed no loyalty to they're guy.

Asmando....your pretty good at writing scathing reports about people you will never get to interview (Ross) and guys who you knew were on their last legs (Henning).....

How about some of that venom during the season...you know.....with this coach....Coach Tony....

who ended the season with 3 STRAIGHT LOSSES....

Blown out by pats...and team showed no fight for their coach...

Author of the leagues worst coring offence....

Author of the leagues worst HOME record......

Starred in the leagues newest coaching video..."How NOT to run a 2 min drill"...

Had multiple delay of games...AFTER WE CALLED A TIMEOUT...

and who could ever forget......

Calling a TIME OUT to see if he wanted to challange a play.....

didn't see any articles about that this past season.....good thing for us and you, looks like our leader will be back and you will have multiple chances to right these wrongs......

WEEL, ARMANDO.....

I SEE ROSS AS A HERO NOT WHAT YOU DESCRIBE HIM.HE WENT OUT AND HAD THE WISDON TO FIGURE IT OUT THAT ALL THESE COACHES ARE NOT BETTER THAN OUR GOOD COACH,HE HAS THE COURAGE TO SAY I AM WRONG AND I BETTER STAY THE COURSE ,YOU R VERY HARSH ON HIM .

Buffallo Bill...class and 4 WINS...don't forget the 4 WINS.......

I WISH WE HAD 4 WINS AND PICK AT NO 3 AT THE DRAFT .

LET'S FORGET THE PAST AND STAND BY OUR TEAM AND MR ROSS AS GOOD LOYLE FANS ,OUR TEAM NEEDS UNITY .

@Hey Krissy, who is your daddy, DC Dolfan?

I REALLY DON't CARE.

THE OFF THE FIELD STUFF IS WHAT IT IS.

SPARANO HAS BEEN DOING THE SAME THING SINCE HE BECAME THE COACH>

MAYBE THIS WILL TEACH HIM AND HE WILL BE MORE DIRECT WITH HIS PLAYERS and THE FIN FANS.

Great post Armando - nice to see a writer with some balls!

It is obvious that Ross doesn't care about the Dolphins or their fans.

all he cares about is the money he can make and rubbing elbows with his B list celebrity buddies.

We need an owner that cares about winning for the sake of winning not just about the money.

If in fact Ross failed...if this is indeed true....all you can do is congradulate him...nothin more and nothing less.....When a BILLIONAIRE fails or succeeds they will do so in a BIG WAY.....he heard the fans voices.....he knew that his team was boring and stagnat.....he tried to make it BETTER for ALL OF US and his bottom line....on top of that HE was gonna pay top dollar....not you, not Armando...and not me.....

You know I don't care that they were looking while we had a coach. Frankly, the whole management system is jacked up. How does a ST coach get canned after two bad games but our last place OC manages to stay employed all year long? And good Ol Mando wants to stir it up. This is the first time I've heard that Ross gave TS the impression he was safe after their initial meeting. Every other reporter and network was immediately reporting if a better option could be obtained then it would be obtained. You shop for a new car when you already have one. You can't worry about one mans feelings when you have a million fans you are trying to please. The thing about this that irritates me is 1) for some reason Ireland remained safe through all this and 2)why the hell was Ross asking Bill "half ass" Parcells his opinion? Screw that fat idiot he showed his colors by packing his office and walking out leaving a job unfinished. So yes our franchise is now a mess but it's not just Ross's fault it's the trifectas fault as well.

Wow . That was harsh. Come on man this is a business . Coach did the same exact thing to his players. Ask a few of the offensive revolving door lineman. You try to get the best player and if does work out you keep what you got. Period!

@Hey Krissy, one of the 4 wins was on Dec 19th in your home park! Buffalo played with heart all year, can't say the same for the Fish!

11 Crash Jenson,

Please clarify how he doesn't care about the fans....that is an empty statement that you failed to even attempt to quantify....

He has given Tuna and company everything they have asked for....

100M o-line...you got it...

Best LB in FA...you got it...

Best WR in FA...you got it....

tell me again how he doesn't care about the team or fans....the bottom line is always money....but he spends it in an effort to satisfy both the fans and the team needs.....

All he did was try to get the best available.....it may not have worked....nothing more..nothing less

THAT THING WAS ABOUT TICKETS SALES ,NO MORE NO LESS ,THE DOLPHINS HAVE LOST LAST YEAR ABOUT 9 MILLION DOLLARS FROM THE STADIUM OPERATION ,,,,, GIVE MR ROSS A PASS ,HE WAS WISE ENOUGH TO NOT HIRE ANY HEYNA OUT THERE .

Kris,

Please dont speak for me. He didn't hear my voice, because if he did he wouldn't have acted like a D bag.

And your point about "HE was gonna pay top dollar....not you, not Armando...and not me....."

Really? I think he might have raised ticket prices to cover his expenses. (Thats how the rich stay rich, they get others to pay for them)

maybe letting sparano sit and think about everything will lead to a new enlightenment for him. he almost lost his dream job because he had his head in the sand. hopefully he will become a new man with a new future if he learns from it. he now knows ireland is a weasel and he needs an offensive guru.

Yes...Buffallo Bill....I hope you get goose bumps watching that....it was an epic battle of two less than mediocre teams.....good football....it had HUGE implications on the balance of power in the NFL

LOOK AT THE GOOD SIDE OF THIS..CHANNING CROWDER IS GONNA BE BACK!

There is only one word to describe all this, we used it in the Army- This is a Clusterf**k!

I now think Ross is the reason Parcells stepped down.

BLACKCEROTE exactly what my prediction is. I don't see TS lasting all season hope I'm wrong. If next season goes like this season get rid of all evidence of Parcells.

When did I speak for you crash? I asked you to quantify your post...and you didn't.....and that "YOU" i used was a collective "you" as in none of us will pay.....

If you want to say tickets will cost more...i'd say your probably right....everything has a cost...especially winning

Trade Crowder and a 6th rounder to Denver for Orton! and while you are at it hire Pennington as the new QB coach!
