Dolphins address offense but try not to wreck model

The Dolphins have asked and received permission to interview Chargers tight end coach Rob Chudzinski for their vacant offensive coordinator job, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune and that could be the first of a slate of interviews coming in the next couple of days.

The Dolphins have certain openings for offensive coordinator (because Dan Henning and the team parted ways) and quarterbacks coach (because David Lee left for the University of Mississippi). The club may also have one and possibily two more openings on its coaching staff in the coming days, with special teams and the tight ends position being closely reviewed.

Chudzinski is also an offensive coordinator candidate in Carolina, where Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera is expected to be hired as early as Tuesday as the team's new head coach.

Coach Tony Sparano is expected to make a decision on those issues soon. Sparano, however, expects to have Assistant head coach Todd Bowles remain with the staff. Even though Bowles is said to be on the radar for a job in Dallas, a source said Monday that at this time, Sparano expects Bowles to return to Miami.

The search for an offensive coordinator should be an interesting one. It is also expected to include Dallas tight end coach John Garrett, who is a former Dolphins quality control coach who went to Dallas in 2007 and worked on the same staff with Sparano that year.

Garrett's brother, Jason Garrett was recently named head coach of the Cowboys. Jason Garrett also coached with the Dolphins in 2005-2006 and was on the Miami roster as a backup quarterback in 2004.

The fact both Chudzinski, who played in the 1980s at the University of Miami, and Garrett coach tight ends could call into question George DeLeone's status with the Dolphins. DeLeone has coached four years in the NFL while spending most of his career coaching at Temple, Mississippi, Syracuse and Holy Cross.

Other candidates for Miami's vacant offensive coordinator job could emerge.

The Dolphins are rumored to be interested in coaches currently serving on Sean Payton's staff in New Orleans, including offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. Carmichael is the team's offensive coordinator in title but Payton is indeed the play-caller for the Saints.

Sparano and Payton are close friends.

The Dolphins are clearly intending not to stray from the type of offense they have run in the past -- one that follows the lineage of Don Coryell, then Joe Gibbs, Ernie Zampese and Henning. Lately Norv Turner has taken versions of that offense to his various NFL stops including Dallas in the early 1990s, Washington, Miami, and now San Diego.

One supposes whichever offensive coordintor Sparano picks will install his system that springs from the blue-print of those previous coaches but might employ personal tweaks.

Scrapping an offense altogether is a dangerous proposition this year in the NFL. The uncertain labor situation has left open the possibility of an owner's lockout of players. That would mean teams that make changes to their staffs or schemes might not be able to implement those changes on the field with players until a new labor agreement is reached.

And that means the teams installing significant changes will fall behind teams that retain the players, coaches and schemes from the previous season.

The Dolphins expect to make significant changes to the offense beyond the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The club expects to go searching for a new quarterback, at least one new running back and some help along the offensive line and possibly at tight end.

Interestingly, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is apparently giving his input into the kind of offense he wants the Dolphins to run. This despite the fact he has never coached football at any significant level.

"I’ve told Tony that, to me, I want an aggressive, creative (offense), not playing just to keep it close,” Ross said on 940-AM. “Where, people are a little bit more unpredictable, and opening it up. That’s what I think South Florida wants, and that’s what this climate demands."

"We have one great advantage in Florida as the Miami Dolphins, that other teams don’t have, and that’s we have the weather in August, September and October,” Ross added. “Our players are training in that weather, let’s take advantage of it. Let’s go with a hurry-up offense, let’s wear them down. We’ve never done that. This isn’t the north, where you want to just take it 4 yards and a cloud of dust. I think I look for a different brand. Seeing the Dolphins, how fans want to see it, how we win, we’re going downfield, the days of Dan Marino, the days we all want to go back to.”

Interesting on two levels. It was Ross who, in effect, de-clawed Miami's weather advantage by petitioning the NFL the ability to play early season games on the road while playing its early-season home games either at night or the late afternoon.

Ross said he did this so that fans didn't have to sit in the heat of Sun Life Stadium. Unfortunately, the team cannot take advantage of the heat if the owner is getting games changed to times that are relatively cooler.

Also, in the same interview, Ross says he's learned not to "micromanage" the football operations.

Let's all look at the QB that the dolphins draft in the first round, at least two of them that I know about are HOF, look when flaco Ryan got picked pro draft gurus and they turn ok, I now every QB pick in the first round you don't hit on, that's why you have to have good people with knowledge about QB to help IRELAND AND SPARANO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE THAT'S ALL WE VAN HOPE FOR BUT WE NEED TO DRAFT A QB BRCAUSE OUR SECOND ROUND QB WE PICK IN THE PASS HASN'T WORK OUT!!

This is a problem that needs to be addressed by Ireland this year. Our draft picks this year weather by sure genius, or luck need to out perform this past years class. Now obviously the jury is still out on all of them.Carrol, Jones, Misi all played well at times, and other times like rookies.(not to mention the young recievers) But to contend, your draft picks need to play a much bigger role on your team then ours did last year. Dying I understand your point, and to me it makes a lot of sense. Usually 1-2 round guys can be counted on to be starters. We must have production out of those spots(I know we don't have a 2) With the guys from 3-5 if we can get production from them then the draft looks great. Anything 6-7 is just a bonus. I know that injury played a big part as to why this past class deserves an incomplete. But we have to do better this year.

Craig M,

12 is only 2 sl;ots from top 10. 16 is squarley in the middle of the pack. A gm is a total idiot to give up a 2nd rd pick to move to middle of pack. You may get a 4th rd pick from a smart gm and a 3rd pick from the dumbest one.

If our gm gave up a 2nd rd pick to move into middle of the pack 1st rd position the fans would have his head on a platter. Even if a team is sitting at #32, the upside on a player sitting at 16th isnt great enough to part with your 2nd rd pick to get.

Hey whats up fellas?

Coaching search? Should be interesting. I would be in favor of the offensive cordinator from Univ. of Wisconsin. I would rather not become Dallas Southeast. Wisconsin has a heavy run offense out of various formations and a power running attack. Granted you need the big boys up front and Miami needs to add at least 2 new starting linemen particularly Center.

If Miami wants to be a running team I have no problem with that. I want the elite personel to do it. I have lost all faith in Ronnie Brown. He is a tip toe runner and is pushing 30. He never showed me anything consistantly anyway. Miami needs to go get an elite RB for an elite running game. My choice is either Mark Ingram at 15 or if Miami trades back Ryan Williams would be a steal at the end of round 1.

OUR draft picks this year will be great as long as there's no ODRICK.

100% with you, Bob.

Anyone wanting to trade Jake Long is outta their mind. That's not how it works. Trade an ELITE Left Tackle to get a few picks and draft a potential bust at QB or a QB who becomes a deer in headlights after he is blindsided because he has no LT.

Not a good option fellas.

The thing about Odrick is although he did break his leg and have a history of injurcy concerns he was still the best player on the board when Miami picked. I know the injury hostory has to be taken into concern and I am sure it was.

Getting Odrick back next year is just an extra bonus. He is sort of like part of the 2011 draft class because he is young and new again.

How you doing bud? Yeah, I'd be fine with either of those running back choices. My preference is to move back and get a second round pick and somewhere in there we end with a RB/WR/TE/OL. The fallback for me, if we can't trade back is to take Ingram at 15. To me that would be the worst case scenario and to me that would be pretty good.

Mike, I disagree. Ireland only ever looked a part of the picture. He would NEVER have drafted a DeSean Jackson because of Parcells' prototypical-player silly idea. Nor a Chris Johnson. Also, Parcells said he HATES drafting 1st-2nd round WRs (he feels there's fine WR talent later). So there goes the dynamic, impact players.

Our 1st-rd pick in '09 was Vontae Davis. Good CB, should be great in the league. Also a position of need. BUT, we COULD have gotten CLAY MATTHEWS. ANOTHER position of need and I'd say a more impactful player (as of now).

So, I guess you're right, Ireland has been good. I'd rather have EXCELLENT.

Good afternoon guys, Lets just hope they pick a "ALPHA" OC like mike Nolen, I have Zero confidence in the head coach and the owner of this team to go better then 5 and 11 next year IMHO, Then again what do I know.............

I'd also be fine with Brown back on a one year contract as an additional guy in the backfield. Ricky can hit the road!

WHO EVER wants to trade long should go to see a dentist .

doesnt really matter who we get because we're still run by the ireland/sparano combo who were rewarded for doing a poor job.. now we know tony cant trust jeff. our whole front office is miles behind the one man wonder(bill bellichek) and i dont see him slowing down.

Aloco, is the gang of Defeat growing any new members???? LOL..

I'll refrain from indicating who I want as OC. I thought Brian Billick would have been ideal, with Jim Fassel as QB coach but there may be other things at work here. These guys hit a homerun with Mike Nolan last year. I can only hope they do so well this year adding an OC.

Craig M,

What's up bro? Yeah that would be fine with me as well. If Miami trades back and takes Williams tho. I don't want another meat and potatoes guy. I know those guys make the skill players work so it goes hand and hand but at some point you have to add an ELITE playmaker through the draft and those guys can be found in later rounds too but round 1 needs to be Ingram at #15 or Williams in the 20's

The a large determining factor some of us omit is not only where youre placed in the draft. It also has a tremendous amount to do with the quality of that draft. No two back to back drafts are rarely the same. It's the quality of that draft that determines how many premium players are available.

For instance, the 1983 draft. 5-6 qb's(including Marino) drafted. There's probably a draft where a qb was projected to go 1st overall. If you could take that guy and lump him into the 1983 draft that same guy may now become a 2nd rd pick in the 1983 draft instead of 1st overall in the draft class he comes from.

Quality of draft determines much of how high a guy is rated more so than the level of skill that guy actually has. Have to be so careful not to fall in love with guys based on how high they are rated alone.

Dolphins address offense but try not to wreck model

LOL at the title, Wreck i......,Destroy it Please

We'll probably never now who drafted who. Remember, there was BP, Ireland, TS contributing input on the selections, and Ross. The most I can make out is that Henne was Parcells' mistake and the rest, others'.

A New name for LIL Aloco, Ray... LMAOROTF

A player's heart and desire should be rated as high as his skill level. Because no matter how great the guy's skill level is if he doesnt have heart passion and great desire for the game he wont max out his potential anyway.

There should also be a away of measuring a player's football I/Q. If thats way off he'll almost always be doing something to hurt his team.

cuban menace alredy on drugs early .

DC you misread my post, I would love that back, I was replying to you saying winning championships which we unfortunatly did not with Marino. But i still think O-Line is the most important thing these days.

Youre a much better man than me. No way am I going to try and figure out who all of ALoco's self incloned friends are. Aloco could lead a million man march on the nation's capital being the only guy in line! LOL..........

Bill Parcells once said, "If a player is all about money I try to get rid of them", (talking about Deion Sanders).

play w/some one else, you r not fooling any one ,

the reason fans want henne or thigpen is what they had in the past feely, sage, cleo, beck, culpepper, green, and the black qb from the jets.can't remember his name or choose too.

Mike Mayock is FOS.

Marino woulda.....

If Henne is the starter then we will all have to hope that You, Crag M, and BobbyD are right....and I will be among the first to come on here and say so.....having said that...your playing with the facts....Henne did indeed have about 5 seconds to throw the ball for about the first 10 games of the season....We coudn't run but our line was among the best pass protecting in the league through about 10 games....

If your QB can be whipped like a slave....do you really want him to be your QB.....what happens when he has a 2 bad games.....of heaven forbid the crowd starts booing.....what do we do then with our mental midget of a QB?

DC...you have been bring some good info with your post....but I gotta tell you....if you don't think Ireland can draft....then look at the Dallas roster....look at the body of work.....not just one season of ineptness

LOL At Breed, I wonder if Lil Aloco is on the secret service list for possible "Tea party Membership"

LOL @ DB @ 1:39......dam.....now I owe you money....i read somewhere on here that you had LOL copyright protected.....shoot

1. Bring in Vince Young to compete with Henne. Young is still a good QB. Just got cross-ways with head Coach.

2. Bring in gifted, young, hungry OC.

3. Draft speedy WR with hands with first pick(I for one, wish we would have kept Ginn, dumb move after bringing in Marshall.)

4. Draft RB in third

5. Pick up some LB's and DE's in later rounds

These would be steps in the right direction.

cuban menace must be on drugs .

Whaddaya mean, ALoco is the tea party. When exposed he has a backup plan to become the Green Tea Party!

Kris, Welcom to "G.O.D" Gang of defeat....Or as Aloco would say "GAGN OF DEFEET".... LOL At LIL Aloco....Love you bro, Cant help it though...

Why is no one talking about Josh McDaniels as a candidate????

DB should move to live in arizona w/his natural tea party killers .

Once China banned ALoco thier census count went down by a billion and a half people! LOL..........

I still think armando owes ross an apology and the hc SPARANO an apology .

DB @ 1;55 ....it's not funny...you CAN do better.DRUGS HELP.

kris, do you know for sure that was all Ireland (or any Ireland)? And not Parcells? Cause I heard Romo and D Ware were Parcells picks. Also, that same tandem had 3 drafts here.

I'm on record now saying I'd rather have Ryan than Long. I'd rather have Clay Matthews than Vontae. And I'm willing to accept Odrick is still up in the air.

So I'm basing my analysis on 3 years drafting (with stellar picks such as Patrick Turner, Pat White, John Nalbone and Jalen Parmele).

Breed, Is the count at a Billion????????, Gotta party with LIL Aloco bro, gotta be the biggest party in the world... Just sayin..

LoL @ Cuban.....

I'm just want a winner...the owner Mr. Ross said himself that he is tired of losing....and his actions lead me to believe he doesn't think he has the people in place to accomplish that....that concerns me as a fan....he knows BP fed him crap in wrapped in a cavier...

He will put his stamp on this team and "deliver a winner"....and if some how that doesn't happen NOBODY can say he didn't try......

ALoco was placed on the "no-fly" list simply becuase it's impossible to properly screen a billion and a half people thru air port security. Flights would be delayed for months if not years! LOL.........

LOL At Breed......................

If LIL Aloco was a sandwich world hunger would disappear....

Torchered one,

Arent you a little lost there buddy? Last I checked this was the Dolphins not Patriots blog! What a lost soul you are.

Im surprised your mother even let you walk thru the house alone as a kid! LOL...........

DC...to address your first paragraph....I woudn't be surprised if BP is just taking credit for Romo now because he is a success...I know you rember when he had to be ORDERED to play Romo....does that sound like somebody HE REALLY wanted.....As far a WARE....well he fits all the specifications....probably Parcells.....

But lets me be on record....PARCELLS WAS A HELL OF A CAOCH...but he didn't win SH^T without Belicheck....Belichek has been to 4 SB without him....Parcells time passed about 10 years ago....Jerry Jones knew it thus the quotes in the bar......I didn't know it.....thats why I was so high on him comming here.....

Parcells used ALL of us.....and he must have Armando still under his spell (promised interview).....can Ray Charles can see he built us a house of cards

Just when you think dinosaurs are extinct, Parcells, Ireland & Sparano build this Dolphins team to debunk the myth.

Dont know about a sandwich but ALoco did have a candy named after him. Do you remember the "Good and Plenty" candies? ALoco's favorite candies as a kid! LOL..........
