It's 2011: The New Year's resolutions!

Happy 2011 everyone! This is the day many people put forth New Year's resolutions. They are meant as promises to improve. They are goals to reach for.

My resolutions? Eat less. Work out more. Make fewer mistakes in print. Make fewer mistakes on the radio. Update this blog more often. Update the songs on my show more often. Update my wardrobe.

Show more kindness and patience with those I love. Show more kindness and patience with my enemies and the haters.

As you did not come here to read how much I need to improve, let me share with you how much our teams need to improve and how they might get about the business of doing that:

The Dolphins should resolve to stop using running plays up the middle on third-and-goal from the 14.

The Dolphins should resolve to stop running the ball with running backs that aren't special anymore. Find a dynamic RB. Please. Otherwise give up on being a running team.

The Dolphins should resolve in their postseason evaluations that the fourth remake of the interior offensive line in four years probably isn't a great idea. Add a guard, move Incognito to center and stick with Jerry, folks.

The Dolphins should resolve to get a young, new, aggressive offensive coordinator who is also the quarterback coach. Let's face it, Dan Henning is a great wide receiver coach and a good coordinator, but his game-day play-calling is often frustrating at best and his scheme is starting to show its age.

So would that mean for QB coach David Lee?

The Dolphins should resolve to thank coach Lee for the Wildcat. They should resolve to thank him for always being prepared and diligent. And they should resolve to thank him for his services as he leaves the organization.

The Dolphins should resolve to replace Lee because he is seemingly more worried about his guys making mistakes than making plays. They should resolve to find a quarterback coach who can, you know, actually develop a quarterback. They should resolve to find a QB coach with nerve and boldness because what I'm seeing is too much David Lee in Chad Henne. And I don't like it.

The Dolphins should resolve to get Brandon Marshall some help. That means getting him a legit speedster on the other side and a quarterback that is confident and daring and won't take any crap from him and let him know who's boss.

Chad Henne should resolve to have a conversation with Drew Brees. You figure it out.

Henne should resolve to have conversations that don't include the phrase, "I mean."

And Henne should resolve to play with passion and emotion and daring and aggressiveness, because the way he did it last year and the year before didn't work.

Sean Smith should resolve to catch some interceptions this year. Instead of heading back to Cali or partying or just hanging in the offseason, he should catch 100 passes every single day until the 2011 season opener. And he should resolve to do this not while he's standing in front of a jugs machine, but as he's on the move and winded and under duress -- like he would in games. If he had resolved to fix this last offseason, he'd have eight or nine interceptions now and be in the Pro Bowl.

Tony Sparano should resolve to stop telling us how much he "likes this group," of players who have failed to the point his job security is in question.

Sparano should also resolve to stop saying, "I'm not that smart." Not saying he should tell us he's a genius, but we definitely don't want a coach who isn't smart.

We have some resolutions for the teams we follow for various reasons as well.

The Hurricanes should resolve to find a quarterback that completes fewer passes ... to guys on the other team.

Bill Belichick should resolve to prove how great a coach he really is by trading Tom Brady ... to the Dolphins ... for the 199th overall selection in the coming draft.

The Florida Panthers should resolve to become relevant. Maybe one way to do that is make the playoffs for the first time in a decade. Or even get out of last place in the Southeast Division.

The Miami Heat should resolve ... oh, never mind. They don't have to resolve squat. They're showing everyone how it's done right now.

Kris, I'd like Cowher but I don't think he'll bite because of the QB situation here. And that includes the limited options of getting one.

Outside of that, Nolan would be my choice. Not a good W/L record but he was green then and I think he's picked up a thing or two since.

Edwards? If memory serves, I didn't see anything impressive when he was with the jets or KC.

Sorry meant Kris

Got it Cocoajoe...i'm not big on the big name coach who has won the SB before...History says they have never won a SB with another team....so that means the odds are STACKED against us...especially since that can be interpretted as a former SB coach has a 100% chance of getting "burn-out" before he wins the SB again....

I woudn't be upset with Nolan either...my ideal coach is a guy with experince and hunger...Denny Green anyone???

You can categorize me as "full of myself" if you wish but I have little doubt that you and the rest here have multiple postgraduate degrees and a highly successful law practice as I do.

It is simply a statement of fact that I am better equipped to offer counsel and advice to the Miami Dolphins.

I WONDER WHAT WHAT MR IRELAND IS DOING IN HIS OFFICE RIGHT NOW ?

IS HE TRYING TO MOVE UP IN THE DRAFT AND GET US THE QB WE WANT ?

OR ,HE'S HAVING MINT TEA TRYING TO GET US ANOTHER NO NAME PLAYER ?

Happy new years. Agree with the RB part. cut ties with one of them and get some speed in the back field.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

The Dolphins should resolve to replace Lee because he is seemingly more worried about his guys making mistakes than making plays. They should resolve to find a quarterback coach who can, you know, actually develop a quarterback

Armando...I like this one because it goes with my belief of not "hiring from within"....I think if you do that you just get more of the same.....Who do you think his mentor was....

Nolan being the exception for now because he is still an outsider and most important not a Parcells hand picked cronie...but if he is still the DC next year he should be considered indoctrinated an therefore a "hire from within"

Aloco, he's updating his resume.

LEE IS A NAME NOT FOR A COACH ,DOESN'T SOUND RIGH ,AS YOU say ,(( I PRESENT TO YOU , COAch lee )).i don't know .

"The Miami Heat should resolve ... oh, never mind. They don't have to resolve squat. They're showing everyone how it's done right now".

How's that? Completely ignore developing players from the draft because your scouting department sucks and instead just sign the biggest names in basketball.

So they aren't showing people jack s**t, the Yankees have been doing this for years and are always in the running. Yes Miami Heat fans, you are now the Yankees of the NBA. If you lose everyone will laugh and ask how you could lose when you have the best players and if you win everyone will say it's only because you signed the best players.

By the way, if you think you're getting by the Celtics or Lakers for a championship please come back to reality.

DaBulls--

Had Chicago done exactly the same in the offseason (which they ATTEMPTED to do) you'd be eagerly defending them and enjoying each and every trouncing of an opponent.

You can save your piety and sanctimonous nonsense for people dumb enough to buy it. Maybe a Cleveland-based board would suffice.

staff coaches not to lose. thats why they will always finish 7-9 or 8-8. ross will fire them lets hope

that was beauty Armando !! So true all of it. Have a Happy New Year !

D Man Canada Out !!

I resolve to hate the Jets even more.. I raised a new high this year so I need to raise the hate ceiling.

i think henne and marshall both are married ...i think they should have kids this off season and that will make them nicer toward each other .

Well maybe Miami should become the heat of the NFL and start drafting, playing, and winning...go spend some big money this offseason mr ross...you've got to spend money to make money..and that's what mr kraft does for the Patty's.

Great article 'Mando!

To all the Marshall haters:

NO, NO, NO... you have it wrong. 3rd most drops? That's as misleading a stat as Henne's that say he's a good QB. Marshall had four drops that were his fault. Four. The rest were because Henne overthrew, underthrew or threw behind him. Did you folks watch the games this season or do you just read the stat sheet on ESPN? By your standards, then, Henne is as good as Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Colt McCoy, etc.? Come on. Stats only mean something when taken in context.

As for Cowher or Gruden. Not my bag. Dungy, yes. Garrett, perhaps. Nolan, perhaps.

(Sadly,) I think Sparano will be kept on, Garrett will be brought in as OC (please, not McDaniel - although he and Ireland would make the dynamic duo of inappropriate behavior - and talk about making BM unhappy!), Nolan (if they can keep him) will get a pay raise.

Henne will be kept because of the lack of choices out there but will compete.

Draft and FA-wise, if Ireland can pull his head out of his patoot, he'll look for interior line help - and, possibly, a RT and move Carey (although I like Jerry), a speedy WR to compliment and free up the Beast, a speedy, lateral runner (if Sheets isn't the answer - I still think they should keep Ricky - he's underutilized and is by far better than Ronnie), a pass-catching TE, more depth at corner, more depth at safety (or a starting FS, with Jones going to SS to eventually replace the aging Bell). I like the idea of trading down for more picks. Our organization is abysmal at stockpiling picks. How do the Pats continually do this?

I do not think they will draft a QB. They should, but, if Sparano is still here, Henne will get the call, again. Maybe they bring in an Orton-type guy to compete. A lot fo people are calling for Kolb. I haven't seen enough to justify the picks this would take. We lack picks so badly and I'm not sure they give up more for a guy who isn't named Manning/Brady/Brees.

DaBulls...hey man you left an NBA team out..the Magic..the magic are going to beat all those teams this year..watch and see my friend

Happy New Year guys ! Hope everyone and their families had a great night last night and a great day off today!

jimmy jam , i didn't even finished your post when i saw it's a misleading state that MARSHALL THE 3RD MOST WR IN THE NFL W/DROPPED BALLS .

WHAT IS MISLEADING IN THAT STATEMENT ? THAT'S WHY HE PICKS FIGHT W/HENNE AND YELL AT THIGPEN TO TAKE THE SPOT LIGHT OF HIM .

WHY ARMANDO DOESN'T WRITE POSTS ABOUT;

1-MARSHALL DROPPED BALLS
2- THE FIGHT BETWEEN THE TWO PLAYERS

WHY ARMANDO ???????????

Well maybe Miami should become the heat of the NFL and start drafting, playing, and winning...go spend some big money this offseason mr ross...you've got to spend money to make money..and that's what mr kraft does for the Patty's.

----------------------

Actually, that's not at all how the Patriots do things.

Along with the Steelers, they usually have the most uneventful offseasons in the NFL. Rarely making any big signings in free-agency, seldom making trades aside from those to acquire more draft picks, and never throwing big money around to snare fading players.

Their payroll is actually in the middle of the pack.

I think the type of offseason you're talking about is how the Redskins do things. And it never works.

HAPPY NEW YEARS EVERYONE!

Best of all changes start tomorrow night after the game!

Sparano isn't going to be fired.

The big change will obviously be at OC, where Henning will simply retire sometime next week.

Kubiak is now out of the mix for that job, which is a shame. Not sure who they'll interview.

Mando, who's decision is it to fire Sparano? Yes, Ross gets the ultimate decision. But other than everyone hypothesizing, you haven't said anything about Ireland yet.

Do Ireland/Ross have a good working relationship? Has Ross said anything about Ireland's future/effectiveness/etc.? Because Ireland is Sparano's boss. So if Ross says to Ireland, "I'm keeping you, so it's your choice," and Ireland (probably) asks Parcells' opinion, he'll most likely tell him to retain Sparano. That would be VERY inciteful if you could uncover that info Mando.

Aloco,

I like you, man, but really, you need to watch BM and you'll see that only four passes were dropped. Not sure on the 3d most passes dropped but I think that was what you had said? At any rate, the stats on the dropped passes aren't good but the reasons they were dropped are largely Henne's fault. A dropped pass whould be one that is "catchable," but that doesn't mean on target or perfectly thrown. Most of these passes were horribly off target.

I agree that BM has to do a better job but he is near 1000 yards on the season and that is from a garbage QB who thinks that if you can get it within ten yards of a WR then anything other than a catch is the WRs fault. Devone Bess and BMarsh have helped Henne so much by catching passes that were ridiculously off target.

Have a Happy New Year, Aloco.

Here's hoping that whatever the Fins do, it makes them competitive, improved, and interesting.

Nad's

After rewinding the season and a cooler head prevailing, I'm not tentatively aboard on bringing Sparano back for another season. Listen guys, there are pros and cons for going into either direction. My greatest concern about Sparano is gameday management. That's why Im so tentative about bringing him back.

This gameday coaching is where Sparano himself needs to study to step up his coaching game. Because no matter how much more talent is added to this team Belichick will always have the edge on us if TS doesnt step up his game too.

Tony, we all know a few more pieces still need to be added, the pieces here need to step up thier game, and coach Sparano so do you!

Happy new year!

I don't think sparano gets fired no matter what happens up in NE.
For OC I doube we get mcdaniels because I have a feeling he'll go to KC.
Kubiak is out. What about brad childress or karl dorrell?

HAPPY NEW YEAR JIMMY JAM . I SEE YOUR POINT THERE .

Hey Jim...well I waist meaning just the money aspect..the Patty's seem to have a well oiled machine over there. All the draft pick moves and such are more where I was going with that statement. They are doing something right over there and someone on miami's staff should take a few notes. It starts and ends with Tom Brady...if you have an elite QB most of the tine you can win being just average in other areas. In my mind there's no doubt that Marshall would be well over 1000yrds with a bunch more TD's I'd we actually had a QB

Db, I think sparano has said as much. That he's going to take a very close look at what he does in every aspect and make changes if they are necessary. I don't think sparano is a bad coach. I think he'll get one more year.
Fixing the offense will be tougher than defense because you need a QB.

What about John Fox for OC? He's available now...

As I read it posted in another blog, we were only 1-2 plays away in at least 5 of our losses from turning defeat into victory. That a possible 5 more victories and in hindsight possible 12-3 record right now.

Although we could still be one of the weakest 12-3 teams ever because of obvious flaws that currently exist. But still 12-3 right now nonetheless. I would take 12-3 nonetheless right now! LOL.........

Tom Olivadotti for OC...not lol

How much do the Fins want to keep NOLAN?

I've read that the Broncos might want him as HC now that McDaniels is gone.

Can the Fins find someone as good if he leaves?

Is he content being the DC or would the Fins have to offer him the HC for him to stay?

I'd hate to see the defense go to hell next year.

Hey DyingB...well the only problem with that scenario is that Henne would for sure buckle under the pressure of a playoff game and probably throw 6 INT's

i kinda feel sorry for mike nolan;he's our biggest acquistion in the off season and has done a masterful job with the D. too bad he has to work under TS who cant find a way to keep the offense on the field for more than 3 plays. nolan is the only reason why this season wasnt a complete disaster. can you imagine if he was allowed to actually select his own defensive players??? nolan will make a great head coach this year for an NFL team;my hope is its the dolphins.

BoulderFin,

I dont think Sparano is a bad coach either. Just needs to really work on his gameday management. That's the greatest flaw in his coaching game right now.

But it still concerns me he's been making the exact same game management flaws for 3 seasons now. Makes me wonder at times if he's even aware when he does it.

We must keep Nolan...Ross better realize that he should give Nolan anything he wants to stick around...I'm my mind the only rival D to a Nolan coached D is...this hurts to say...a Ryan D, like in Baltimore...
We have one of the best, Ross betta keep him

Hey Greg..I think Nolan is one of the best Defense Coord. around, I'm not so sure he is as good in the head coach department

Cowkilla,

With the now you see it now you dont run game this season and inconsistency at #2wr. Even a seasoned vet would buckle under pressure in a playoff game trying to run this offense.

But as Marshall insinuated, it would take a qb with the balls to throw to him even though it seems he's covered. If you got a "beast" you have to trust him or you may as well have a tamed little kitty! LOL.............

GREG, .

NOLAN IS NOT THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH ,HE'S AVERAGE,IT JUST HAPPEN TO HAVE WAKE AND DANSBY ,OUR DEFENSE ARE TO BLAME FOR SOME OF THESE LOSES LIKE THE DET GAME .

WHEN NOLAN WAS A HC FOR THE SF TEAM THEY WERE THE WORST DEFENSE IN THE LEAGUE FOR 3 YEARS.LET'S NOT MAKE A SUPER HERO OUT OF HIM FOR A SEASON OF 7-9

DB: Sparano's game day management and O-line failure are just two good enough reasons why I've jumped off the Sparano bandwagon. Let's not forget the handcuffing of Henne (which Henning and Lee should be blamed too) and the playing-not-to-lose mentality as well. He's had three years to improve on game-day management and yet he's still horrible. He's shipped many players out in less than a season if they don't perform. So why should we give him another chance?

CHICKEN AND GRAVY!! IM GOING TO RIDE TOOTSIE THE TROLLEY TO DING DONG LAND!!

Regarding Nolan, like I posted in another blog, we have to be aware he may interview for the possible 8 or more HC vacancies out there and there may be possibility he lands one of those positions. I see no scenario where Nolan is paid like a top HC to retain his services. We have to prepare ourselve for a possibilty that life may have to go on without Nolan.

Marvin Lewis was a well respected Ravens DC before landing in Bungletown. He was the architect of that defense that won the Ravens a SB. Should we lose Nolan to a HC position Lewis would be the perfect candidate to replace him. Same style of defensive mentality and system. Plus Marvin Lewis is rumored to fall in Bungletown at seasons end.

the 3rd and 14 RUN... that's exactly it... That's what Henning called all the time in Carolina. we all act surprised, but that is who he is, and that's why he is the problem. He calls that so often it is no longer a 'surprise'.

Happy 2011 everyone! Armando, after the Minnesota game I told you that Marshall was scowling after that big win while everyone was cheering. I told you there was discontent. Marshall had a look that said "what have I gotten myself into...I miss you Jay Cutler!" If a lowly tv viewer could see that, why can't a 3 million dollar coach and his assistant see that? Throw a couple of jump balls at the endzone to the guy and make your 50 million dollar investment happy. Firing Sparano is not the answer. Even getting rid of Henne might no be the answer. But developing better relationships between Henne, Marshall and Sparano is. New years day can be any day...you just have to say enough and act on it. GO FINS

Henne doesn't understand what NFL-open is. With good cause. His inaccuracy is a huge problem when a receiver in the NFL is covered most of the time (a player within a few steps of him). So, Marshall can say, "trust me, I'll go up and get it," and Sparano can say that too, but the person who doesn't believe is...Henne. Why? Because he knows his abilities. He can't fit a ball in a tight space (with any sort of consistency). And he's increasingly HORRIBLE at passing to a moving target.

So, what's another year gonna do to fix that? What's a new QB Coach gonna do? What's a new Coach gonna do?

I really don't care about the Coach, the OC, the QB Coach or any other position on the field. Until proven otherwise, I'm focusing like a laserbeam on the QB position, and Henne's not standing up to the spotlight.

LAPhins,

That's why I say Im "TENTATIVELY" onboard with keeping him. Everyone knows my guy is COWHER.

If we cant get Cowher I rather stick with Sparano than go down flip of the coin paths with anyone else. Gruden could be the absolute worst choice of all. If he doesnt win rightaway I fear the locker room would be immediately divided because Gruden has never been a players coach even in the least bit.

You can make the case that a lot of teams would have different records(for better or worse) based on a few plays. The good teams find a way to make those plays. The middle of the road and sorry teams use this as an excuse. Also in these close games, there are many situations in which we did not execute. You could examine most of our losses and make an argument that a sack here, a penalty there. Or a poor play choice cost us. The bad plays add up. And when your team plays with almost no margin for error the big plays get magnified. To say we were 4-5 plays away isn't really true. We deserve the record we have. We have earned it.

The flower petals decay. Jim Hyde came up with the method to apply nuts to it. Representatives of the West Covina horse and fire unit use tax dollars to paint Marsha. She weighs as much as 2600 lbs. and hangs in the air. Bob is very gentle. Look, here's my buddy and his salad. Congratulations and well executed by Germany. It's a giant sized likeness of King Kameha Kameha. Dole is a marvelous company. They are based in Westlake.

Ask yourselves, in the Detroit game for example, how many slips did you see from their receivers? It wasn't raining, surface wasn't slippery, and even if they were, after one slip everyone would be changing to a longer cleat.

Why do our receivers slip a lot? Are they awkward and off-balance all the time? Doubt it. Are they not physical enough to stand up to a defenders pushing? Doubt it. Are they wearing tap shoes? No.

THEN....Sometimes people, you have to accept that 1+1=2. The problem is 3-fold.

Henne
Henne
and oh yeah..
HENNE!

I WONDER WHAT OUR GM IRELAND IS DOING IN HIS OFFICE RIGHT NOW ?

IS HE WORKING HARD TO GET US A GOOD QB AT THE DRAFT BY MOVING UP ?

OR IS HE SPENDING HIS TIME TALKING TO PEOPLE ABOUT CRAP ?

In chess, running on 3rd and 14 would be considered playing for the stalemate. It's both playing not to lose and playing not to win. You fail to see a way to win so the primary focaus is not to lose.

It's like a ho' having venereal disease and offering a 50% discount.

DOES FASANO STILL PLAYING FOR FINS ?
WHER IS HE ?

Henne's downfall will be this statement:
"you have to do what the Coaches say."

Why in everything that's holy would anyone need to see/hear anything else from this yahoo?

WHAT DOES A GM DO ALL YEAR LONG IF NOT GETTING A QB FOR US ?

ANY ONE CAN RELEASE AND SIGN CRAPPY PLAYERS ALL DAY LONG BUT TO GET A QB ,THAT SHOULD HIS JOB .

Asking Sparanderthal to improve his game day coaching abilities is like asking a baby to explain calculus. Somethings are pure futility.

DD,

The difference between other teams and us only being a play or two away from victory instead of defeat(execution). At least 3-4 of the losses were a simple fact of our db's holding onto picks.

What, we even ended up losing one when the db did hold onto the pick. Dumbass Benny Sapp cost us huge field position trying to pitch the ball to Vontae when he could have possibly scored on his own had he just followed the developing convoy. In the very least we would have been in chipshot fg position.
