Can we be real?
Conference Championship Weekend is upon us. And if the Miami Dolphin are ever going to again participate in one of these weekends, it will take TALENT on the field. Yes, it is interesting the team is hiring and firing coaches this week (check out the previous couple of posts).
But the players are the thing.
The players make the plays. The players make the difference. The players, the players, the players.
Because that is true, I am starting to shift to player-talent mode on this blog. That means the focus will be less on the coaching (not sure whether that makes coaches who read this blog happy or sad) and much more on the players (not sure whether that makes players who read this blog happy or sad).
We start today with some future prospects. The NFL has granted 56 talented (most of them) players special eligibility to enter the April 28-30 draft. Each player met the NFL's three-year eligibility rule and submitted a written application renouncing their college eligibility. The deadline for turning those applications in to the NFL was January 5.
So this is it for the underclassmen entering the draft.
Consider the players:

DC,
Yeahhhh REPRESENT!! lol. The Philly game is in Miami. My friends are already salivating going to South Beach for this one. I am going to try to get down there but at the Skins? That might be a possibility if I can't get my fiance's co-workers place in Miami again.
Posted by: Andy NJ | January 21, 2011 at 10:34 AM
I think I will be at the skins game this year, it is in DC right? My buddy is a huge skins fan, so we might go together.
Posted by: Poizen | January 21, 2011 at 10:36 AM
Poizen I willl aggree but at the same time you cant take away the mass of knowledge that guy has . He isnt considered the most accurate passer for nothing . The guy knows how to make reads and that is something our little Frankenstein doesnt know nor will a drafted QB most likely either
Posted by: Richard | January 21, 2011 at 10:37 AM
Good Morning Guys, Just one "Q" from the Cuban, Doe's anyone thing the current staff can draft a quality player this upcoming draft????????, I have ZERO confidence in these guys....
Posted by: Cuban Menace | January 21, 2011 at 10:41 AM
Andy in NJ,
Were you saying that's the only game you've been to in Miami or the only game you've been to to see the Dolphins. I've yet to see them play in Miami but it's on my list of things to do evey year. One of these years! I'm a little afriad I'd be the only guy cheering for them...LOL.
Andy, you don't think after what we saw from the Jets last week that they can confuse Big Ben the way they confused Brady? They thew so many different looks at him that they confused the Hell out of him. I'm also not sure that they can run on the Jets and that's a concern too. I think it will put too much pressure on Big Ben. I see a close game too but right now I'm seeing a 17-13 Jets victory. I think the Jets will frustrate Big Ben all day.
DC, I really like A.J. Green. I just think he'll be gone top 5, maybe to a tem like the Bengals, who will probably lose Ocho Cinco and T.O. this off-season. He'd be great on this team but I think we would have tanked in order to get him.
Posted by: Craig M | January 21, 2011 at 10:42 AM
Richard,
I agreed to not get into the QB debate today or until we get another QB to talk about but what a classic line "little Frankenstein" LMAO!
By the way I agree with you and now I am locking my fingers to no more Henne bashing talk until FA or draft.
But I will be pumping up Mallet here and there.
Posted by: Andy NJ | January 21, 2011 at 10:43 AM
i know, i would like CP as QB coach. Just being a little silly.
Posted by: Poizen | January 21, 2011 at 10:44 AM
Wouldn't it be wiser to discuss established guys we already know about, rather than guys we have no real clue about?
RB: D. Williams, M. Bush
WR: Breaston, Floyd, Jacoby Jones, James Jones, Edwards, Holmes, Lance Moore
TE: Zach Miller, Owen Daniels
OL: Daryn Colledge, Ryan Kalil, Willie Colon, Mankins, Nicks, Chris Chester, D Lutui
OLB/ILB: Woodley, Harris, Session, Manny Lawson
CB: Kelly Jennings, R. Marshall, C Rogers, I. taylor, E. Wright,
FS: Q. Mikkel, A. Bigby, E. Weddle, D. Landry, C. Peprah, M. Johnson, D. Grant, E. Smith, B. Poole
Posted by: Joe Schmoe | January 21, 2011 at 10:45 AM
Andy, I'm gonna try to get down to Miami for a game too. Lucky I can crash with my family if need be, so no worries there.
Poizen, yeah dude, do it! It's in DC. I'm THERE! These sorry fans won't know what to do with 2 Dolfans there. No, there'll be more, there are a few in this area. I hate the traffic around FedEx field, but I have to admit, it's a pretty raucous crowd if the game is good.
Cuban, lol. A stopped clock is right twice a day, so there's a glimmer of hope there.
Posted by: DC Dolfan | January 21, 2011 at 10:45 AM
Joe, it would, if any of those guys would be available before the draft. And, unless the CBA gets signed, they won't. So we should probably act like there will be no free agency until an agreement is in the works.
Posted by: DC Dolfan | January 21, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Joe, you forgot N asomooghalalala
For some reason he's a FA now
Posted by: Marc | January 21, 2011 at 10:48 AM
Joe, I have said many times.
If we do not draft that kid from illinois...
I would like Ronnie Brown, Michael Bush either way.
To add I want the illinois running back, if not, and the price is right we go get Reggie Bush for return/change of pace.
Why? You can never get enough bush.
I love bush.
If your haveing a terible season, but you still have plenty of bush, there is still happiness.
Posted by: Poizen | January 21, 2011 at 10:49 AM
Craig M,
Yeah the jets definitely can pressure Big Ben like Brady but honestly Big Ben has better overall weapons to work with. Take away Welker and the TEs and the Pats have nothing. Yeah it was a cute story to see Woodhead make plays but he isn't on Mendenhall's level. And I'd take M. Wallace, Ward, Emanuel Sanders, Heath Miller over the Pats. And I take the Steelers D over the Pats.
I think the wheels eventually come off the tracks for up and down Sanchez. I gotta give it to Sanchez he is a gamer. He sucks a lot but comes up big when it matters as he did time and time again in games late this year, playoffs last year and also this year. But I think he comes back to earth in this one. Not that I think the game is too big for him just the defense will be too good.
The Steelers have a better chance of establishing the run then the Jets do. And as far as pressure on the QB you don't think the Steelers will expose the loss of Damien Woody at RT? The Pats had no legit pass rusher the Steelers have bookend rushers.
Posted by: Andy NJ | January 21, 2011 at 10:49 AM
Jason Taylor is not and never will be a Dolphin again in my eyes and as a fan I have every right to feel that way. Quite frankly I can't stand him.

DC if it happens, 1st round on me!!! I think it will happen!
Posted by: Poizen | January 21, 2011 at 10:52 AM
anybody could put up the list that armando put together. all you need to do is go on any draft site and see who the top players listed for each position are according to those sites and pencil them in. it doesn't take a genius to the that. the best teams, however, are able to find talent among the other players and have them listed on their draft boards. among the other players miami should have on their draft board are: jerrell jernigan, randall cobb, derrick rodgers, bial powell (check this guy out, most underrated back coming out this year), benjamin ijalana, john moffett, lee ziemba, zach hurd, jason pinkston, chris hairston and how can armando leave out andy dalton. others that deserve mention are vincent brown, jeremy kerley and greg salas. let me reiterate what i have stated before; if miami can get a 2nd by trading down and get torrey smith in the 1st, ryan williams in the 2nd, somehow get jernigan pick up one to two of the OLinemen mentioned and get derrick locke in a round 5 they will have done very well. that would be a draft they can be proud of and, if they don't pick up anyone on the defensive side, so be it. loading up on offense is no crime and, if they could pull it off, they will have some really good players to build the offense with. next year they can fill in the gaps on both offense and defense thru FA and the draft. as for now, if i was picking, it would be strictly on the offensive side.

LOL @ DC, I might try to make it down the belt-way to see the mighty Fins, I catch the game up here in NY for the past 12 years, and the past 3 were great......

if your in Miami hit me up I'll have tickets to the game . I try not to miss any even took my 2 year old .

Here's cheering for JT and the Jets this weekend, let's hope they can beat Pitt. I'm sick of following such a mal-run organization like the dolphins.
Posted by: Richard3000 | January 21, 2011 at 10:55 AM
marc, no way in hell Miami goes after that guy. That's why he is not on the list. Come to think of it, I should scratch Holmes & Edwards off also.
DC, I know what you're saying but, let's face it. None of us have any clue about these College guys. I think pretending to do so is an utter waste of time.
With that said, enjoy your day fella's!
Posted by: Joe Schmoe | January 21, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Andy,
All good points. Can't disagree with anything you had to say. However, weren't you surprised that the Pats werent able to do something similar to th Jets to what they did a few weeks earlier to the Jets. I think that's why I say the Jets are a very well coached team. they go their doors blown off by the Pats 45-3 and figured out a way to confuse Brady lat week and pretty much make him ineffective. I read they dressed THIRTEEN DB's last week. Very impressive and great coaching! I'm not so sure they can't come up with something similar to that this Sunday against the Steelers.
Posted by: Craig M | January 21, 2011 at 10:56 AM
Joe S,
Happy Friday pal. Yeah man I like a few of the options too but FA is tough there are obviously other teams competing but also franchise tags where certain guys aren't going anywhere like Woodley and Weddle.
An interesting thing is that a team like Carolina has both DeAngelo Williams who I would love to land and Ryan Kalil both play for a miserable team. They can only franchise one and might not franchise either. Offensive linemen are grouped together in franchise tags and paying a Center 8-10 millions is insane and Carolina also has RB depth with Stewart and Goodson so a possibility is there to solve at least one major position issue there.
Also like the chances of landing Nicks if not the the Carolina guys because the Saints just made Jahri Evans the highest paid guard in the NFL last season. No chance he is franchised and he has a Super Bowl ring so now it's time to go get paid. Miami's expenisive linemen acquisitions haven't panned out with Grove and Smiley so third times a charm.
Posted by: Andy NJ | January 21, 2011 at 10:56 AM
also, if they have a choice between jernigan and ryan williams in the 2nd i would rather see them take jernigan. they could get a chance to take bilal powell in the 3rd or 4th (he is rated as a 5th rd pick at this point but will probably move up) and then go OL and finally derrick locke. they need speed and these guys will give it to them. put marshall in the mix and it will tough for any defense to keep up with the speed they would have on offense.
Posted by: dm1dolphan | January 21, 2011 at 10:59 AM
A boy can dream can't he Joe?
Could you imagine N Asamoglalala and VD...Let SEAN SMITH play the third safety to cover TE's...

Andy,
I'd be all in if Khalil is there. I say pay the guy. I know we've got burned by Smiley and Groves previously but I don't think you can win in the league if you can't protect the QB or run the ball. I'm all for improving the line. I don't want D'Angleo Williams. The guy is a talent, no doubt, but he's been too banged up the last couple of years and can't stay healthy. I'd rather we draft a young running back in one of the first three rounds this year and RB is a poistion where you can get guys later in the draft (see Starks from GB and Foster from Houston).
Posted by: Craig M | January 21, 2011 at 11:08 AM
mass KNOWLEDGE my roast .if chad.p did any thing ,he sabotaged henne.
Posted by: ALoco | January 21, 2011 at 11:08 AM
Craig M,
Yeah absolutley Rex Ryan is pushing all the right buttons with his mind games and superior defensive mind but being honest no I wasn't surprised by the outcome. I wondered when the Pats lack of playmakers at WR and RB would get them. I thought the Pats would win don't get me wrong but thought they would lose to the Steelers in the AFC chip.
And just a prediction but I say the 17-13 score is a litte more one sided then the score says. I think the jets get a late TD or something to make it look close. I love James Harrison and Woodley. The jets o-line is very good but without Woody and a banged up Brandon Moore they are hurting along the o-line. I say the Steelers throw down in typical Steelers fashion and their defense dominates the jets, shutting down the running game and making Sanchez inaccurate because of the pressure and Polamalu gets all the credit he gets because he makes the difference game after game.

LOVE the draft talk!! Let's be honest most of us don't have a clue about (most teams don't even know what they are doing) but it's SO much better than than the doom and gloom off the daily conversations on here. At least there's a glimmer of hope, as we try to figure out which of these guys can help us next season and beyond. Excited to see what the Dolphins do and what this team can become.
Posted by: Craig M | January 21, 2011 at 11:13 AM
Andy,
Again all good points! OK, you might be swaying me. I'll chew it around some more. I know most people are picking the Steelers, Im just really impressed with what the Jets are doing and their passion and the precision in which they are executing. If things are going badly Sunday night I might be cursing you....LOL.....just kidding!
Posted by: Craig M | January 21, 2011 at 11:17 AM
ALoco I think David Lee, Henning and Henne himself damaged Henne.
Posted by: Richard | January 21, 2011 at 11:19 AM
I think that it will be a miracle if A.J. Green is available after pick #10. However, if he is, the Phins need to trade up from 15 and get him. Like I read earlier on this blog, Bess should have a great games with Marshall & Green on the field with him. Also, we need to sign free agent TE Cornelious Ingram out of Florida, he's been injured for the past 2 seasons, but he is fully receovered and this has sure hands, runs routes well and runs the 40 in 4.5 secs. So, come on Phins let's get this done!
Posted by: sardi214 | January 21, 2011 at 11:22 AM
Draft the QB from TCU. Do not go digging thru the trash for somebody else's rejects. Been there - done that!!!! Fix the O-line and add a kick/punt return specialist. We will be on our way then.
Posted by: LA Phin Fan | January 21, 2011 at 11:43 AM
All,
Not really sure the OL needs better players as much as it needs time to jell. They haven't played together all season yet! Lets remember that Tony, I rotate my linemen during games, Sparano will have to get his line together early in camp just for the sake of his job. No more rotating the linemen TS! Pick em and stick with em. Many other teams have our castaways and they're doing great. On a side note, I really believe that some of the Dolphins Brass pays attention to this blog.
On January 6th I made a post with the last line being "THE DEFINITION OF INSANITY: DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER EXPECTING DIFFERENT RESULTS." Ross actually used this analogy on Saturday January 8th when talking about the past years offense. This can't be coincidence. He or someone close to him read it. It just goes to show the higher ups read this and maybe get some fresh ideas from all of us.
Posted by: Dbmfins | January 21, 2011 at 11:53 AM
Armando you really are a clown. Nobody cares about any coaches or players who may read your crappy little blog.
Clearly you believe you are much more important that you really are.
Posted by: Tron | January 21, 2011 at 12:01 PM
If the coaches do read your blog i think we found our problem. But lucky for you i seriously doubt they take the time to read something some hack wrote on the internetz.
Posted by: Borners | January 21, 2011 at 12:02 PM
The jets did lose the game after Parcells gave their coach some pointers, just saying.
People just want to whine and cry about anything and everything
So are all these players juniors and sophomores? Kind of hard to figure anything out with all these names just from their school and in alphabetical order.
Posted by: corners | January 21, 2011 at 12:10 PM
Yeah you have to have good players but if the coaching isn't up to pair then all go's south how many allstar studs team have been put together and failed to meet the mark because their not united and no chem has been created by coaching/mangement!
Posted by: killerdolphin | January 21, 2011 at 12:20 PM
And how many teams with good team chem and great coaching get it done this combo works more often
Posted by: killerdolphin | January 21, 2011 at 12:22 PM
"This can't be coincidence. He or someone close to him read it. It just goes to show the higher ups read this and maybe get some fresh ideas from all of us"
Huh? I'm all for new ideals but if any of them read from these forums on ideals to run the team then im nervous.
So many people are quick to point the finger, very impatient and jump on the chance to throw players and coaches out in as little as a season or 2. Thats irrational. 21 snaps isn't enough for any position but to fans it seems to be. We want change but people want to draft a qb at 15. Unless something falls to us i dont see how any qb at 15 will be any better then we were the last few years
Posted by: corners | January 21, 2011 at 12:31 PM
Jon Baldwin and Jaquizz Rodgers should be drafted for our offense they would be immediate impact players
Posted by: beerphin | January 21, 2011 at 12:32 PM
Players absolutely make a difference but to keep this in perspective ask yourself these two questions.
1) Would Danny Woodhead have had the success in Miami that he's had in New England?
2) Would the Patriots EVER in a million years trade a young Wes Welker to the Jets or Miami?
The Dolphins need to close the gaps between themselves and the playoff teams with better players on the field and better decisions off the field. Given the events from the past month, that won't be anytime soon.
Posted by: T. Martin | January 21, 2011 at 12:34 PM
We don't need any of these players as long as we have the Cowboys trash pile and Footlocker to sign starters from.
Posted by: PriceMaster | January 21, 2011 at 01:11 PM
dm1dolphan I luv your list. the phis need speed to make the field shorter with special team or strike from anywhere.

derrick locke RB 4.39 40 speed
Jernigan, Jerrel WR 4.34 40 speed

mice list jrblak!

The New england pats should get J.J WATT with the 17th pick and trade our 28th overall pick and the second round original pick too move up in the first round and draft A.J Green!!!! Tom Brady will be ecstactic.. And for sure we will have the jets back in 3rd place in that division like they suppose too be behind the Pats and the Dolphins!!!
Posted by: really real | January 21, 2011 at 01:44 PM
Right on it, t Martin.
As for the list, I don't like the players that have been mentioned recently in this post, I like dion Lewis as a steal, I think Ryan Williams will be the best back out of the entire class, and I love Julio jones as our first pick of Ryan mallet or cam isn't available.
Anyone else notice how weak the underclass tight end selection is? Makes sense with all the talent that went last year.
Posted by: inimounts | January 21, 2011 at 01:47 PM
@ T.Martin: Well said.......Thanks for the news flash Armando. Really? you need good players to win? Whats tomorrows blog? Todays news, you need oxygen to breathe. Coaches matter...alot!
If Miami and NE switched coaching staffs and played 10 times, is there any doubt Bellichik and co. would take Miami's roster and beat NE 7 out of 10?
Posted by: GarbagePlate | January 21, 2011 at 01:50 PM
Why the Ingram pick makes the most sense:
First let me say that I'm not personally in love with the pick...on the plus side for me is the Dan Patrick interview with Emitt Smith, where Smith stated he saw a lot of himself in Ingram. Another plus is that while it is a 1st rnd pick, it's not a top 10...I hate when RBs are taken in the top 10. Anyway, here's my attempt to illustrate why Ingram seems to be the consensus pick on the majority of mocks I've looked at.
1.) It fills a need. Ricky won't be back and I give Ronnie 50-50. Even if Ronnie is back, he is 30 and pretty much out of gas. The only way he's back is with a substantially reduced price tag and role.
2.) This draft is not deep on 1st round caliber skill position players. Most if not all will be taken by 15. As I see it, at 15 we're looking at Ingram, Locker, Mallett, Newton (I'll explain my QB thoughts in another post). I believe Ross will apply pressure to get a skill position/sexy pick rather than taking an OL/DL. I would love for Julio to be there...but he'll be gone for sure. That really doesn't leave much left at 15.
3.) The Dolphins won't take a QB...though I believe Locker is worth a look (I will explain in another post). I just don't see a coach and gm on the hotseat taking a QB in the first round. First, they would pretty much be admitting that their previous "franchise" pick was a complete waste....doesn't bode well. 2nd, a rookie will need time to grow and make his mistakes...no time for that when everyone is in a win now mentality and careers are on the line. They will most likely look at FA to find some veteran competition for Henne.
3.) Just to re-iterrate....I think Ross will apply pressure to take a skill position player. I think he's fed up with taking line men year in year out with nothing to show and who could blame him. I think he's really going to push to get someone who actually puts points on the board. Personally, I would rather that push be Ingram than say.....Newton.

And that first rounder is in debate right now whether we go for a QB and wait a couple of years for him to develop, or trade it for a veteran QB such as Kyle Orton. All this while the Patriots get 6 picks in 3 rounds. So don't try and get our hopes up too high too soon. Let's be real, we have a lot of upgrading to do!

A couple thoughts on the QB class of 2011:
First let me preface with 1.)overall I think this class is mediocre for the most part..not that there won't be a couple successfull QBs come out of here, but it make take a few years of grooming for all these guys. 2.) I'm well aware that most mocks have Locker falling fast and to the 2nd round; I don't think it's going to happen so bear with me here. I think once workouts, combine, interviews, etc start, he will move up...no top ten here but he will go in the 1st.
I've made some changes to my board since yesterday. Yesterday I had Gabbert going to Redskins @ 10 and Locker to Minn @ 12. I could be off on this, but I no longer have any of these QBs going in the top 10. I think once we have the combine and teams start working these guys out they will shy away from any top 10 picks for this mediocre QB class.
Gabbert - I now have Minn taking the first QB of the draft and taking Gabbert @ 12. Personally, I think this guy will have a pretty steep learning curve. He plays in a spread offense and is usually in shot-gun. He will have to learn how to work under center...footwork...planting, etc. Yes, all that can be coached but don't look for him to come out of the gate guns a blazin'. When I think Gabbert....for some reason images of Alex Smith start popping into my head.
Jake Locker - For me, this guy could end up being the surprise of the draft for whomever takes him. That's not to say he won't need some development....which is only one of the numerous reasons Miami will pass on him with the 15th. This guy has tremendous upside. He is a speciman to be sure and has all the tools....arm strength, size, etc. His biggest issue is that he is most comfortable on the move. His pocket awareness is lacking and need to be coached up on his footwork. Keep in mind that this guy was projected a top 10 pick last year. He hasn't looked as good this year...IMO because he's been playing behind a patchwork line and has been playing injured most of the season. Like I said, Miami will pass....I have him staying local and going to Seattle @ 25 where he will be aforded a year or two behind Hasselbeck before being thrown into the fire. Not to mention Coach Pete likes this guy and is very familiar with him from his USC days. Hope I'm proven wrong but something in my gut tells me that 2 - 3 seasons from now we'll be wondering how we passed this guy up...another lost opportunity. Think Drew Brees with a prototypical QB body and arm.
Newton - I've seen more than a few mocks with Miami taking Newton. Unless Ross forces this pick, I just don't see it happening. Sure, from a purely athletic standpoint he's intriguing. He is a winner and a leader. But he's also an option QB that will have a tremendous learning curve in the NFL. Another red flag for me is that he's only had one year as a starter. I think this guy could have benefited from another year at Auburn...still, something tells me the days of taking an option QB early is coming to an end. If Miami passes (please!!!) I look for him to drop to round 2.....perhaps the Titans....the Vince Young clone may be much more pallatable as the 39th overall pick.
Ryan Mallett - I know there are a lot of Mallett fans on this board and for good reason. He's a monster with a monster arm. He's also immobile and has a slow release....bad combo. He also has accuracy issues (if you watch some games you will see that he almost always makes the receiver work for it) due to horrible footwork. Coachable...maybe! But I ask, why hasn't the footwork and throwing motion changed during his college career at all. There has been no development there. Could be the coaches he's worked with but I feel more likely that it is an unwillingness to learn these things and to simply rely on that howitzer of his. His stats are eye popping but he's also surrounded by some outstanding talent, including an outstanding O-line. No way he gets that much time to throw in the NFL. Miami passes and Mallett goes 2nd round....I'm thinking Cardinals @ 38.
One interesting note here....if indeed Locker is around at 15, it may provide an opportunity to trade back to 25 for Seattles pick...if indeed they want him and they indeed think Miami might take him. Then again, they might just say whatever...we're calling you bluff...and even if you're not bluffing we'll just take Mallett.

They need to take a close look at Jacquizz Rodgers out of Oregon State. He would be a brillant third down back, he has fantastic hands catching the ball out of the backfield and he's a very shifty runner. Plus the guy is an incredible work ethic
