Dolphins' ridiculous order of business continues

If you listen to my radio show or follow me on twitter, you know what's coming next: Cue the circus music. Send in the clowns.

Are you ready for this?

You probably know by know several reports, including this one in The Miami Herald, are saying the Dolphins have decided to retain Tony Sparano as Miami's head coach. Awesome! I've been advocating that all along quite forcefully, I believe.

But I have no issues that owner whatshisface has sampled the market to see if he could find an upgrade at coach. Nothing wrong with that. I have, however, a distaste for the manner that was done. And today that distaste grows.

The fact is that while sources within the team and close to owner whatshisface have leaked to various media the fact Sparano was to be retained, I know that no one told Sparano this.

Think about that ...

So the sources are telling the media. But they are not telling the principle person involved most affected by the news.

Stunning. Embarrassing. More embarrassing, actually. Head-scratching.

I do know there is a meeting planned for today between ownership and Sparano. I don't know when or where, but I assume the purpose is to break the news to Sparano that was broken first to the media.

One can assume Sparano will come out of this meeting the head coach of the Dolphins. But I cannot guarantee that. Who knows what other things owner whatshisface has up his sleeve and might want to spring on his coach.

And who knows if Sparano, hung out to dry the last four days while the Dolphins chased other coaches across the country, might not agree to be retained.

Strange? Thy name is the Miami Dolphins in January 2011.

Craig, yep, the only think that will maintain or increase Luck's and harbaugh's stock is if they win it all next year. High risk/high reward scenario. Both of them will get NFL jobs if they don't win it all, but they will leave money on the table, no doubt.

Is Craig M secretly Belicheks nephew? Think about it.

there are better ways of handling this situation than the way Ross chose to do it. I know, he's the owner, so who's to tell him, right?

But if Sporano quit, I'd bet you anything he'd get a job somewhere else for just as much if not more money. Of course, the point is moot, I know Sporano won't do it, but not because he's too afraid of not knowing where his next meal is coming from. LMAO.

Mark in Toronto,

Not ruling it out, just doubting it happens at 15. Trade back, we get an extra pick and a couple of those guys are there then maybe. For my money I like what I've seen in Gabbert. good arm, plays with fire and moves well. Might end up being the best QB in this draft amd someone who's not getting a lot of attention. Walter football had us taking DJ Williams in the 4th....I wasn't impressed with him the other night but of course you have to consider him.

Chip Kelly is the Scoreoregon HC. He was quoted once talking to a sideline reporter saying 'FG's? No. I want TD's'

He is going no where considering how successful his team is and that no one has an answer for his scoreoregon offense. We will see if Auburn can deal.

Mark Helfrich is the Oregon OC. I'd love to see him land in Miami. Though unlikely for the same reasons.

The best option in my opinion is Orton right now.

Kolb in my opinion will not be traded. His salary is so low for this year they may as well keep him.

Here is a weird flyer out there, Jeff Garcia is finally healthy and might actually want to come back this year.

The truth is all, We need to fix the O-line more than anything in my opinion. That is the primary focus. A great O-line with a slightly above average QB HAS won the SB in the past. a team with an average to poor O-line has never won one, recently at least.

Navy, it was a joke, he knew it, and we already crossed that bridge pages ago.

Sparano should tell Ross to F**k off and test the coaching waters on his own.

Let's step back for a moment and review what has happened this season during game-days. The play-calling has been predictable, clock management has been terrible, offense unable to score, offense unable to block, no cohesiveness on the offense, Quarterback coach has destroyed the QB, etc, etc.

Just these things alone suggests that our Head Coach is not capable of preparing for or managing a game properly and is not willing or able to override the O.C. which is too conservative and predictable.

Stephen Ross should fire the HC, OC, and QB Coach and try to get this organization to regroup and start to compete.

No offense to Armando, but our HC does NOT have what it takes to be a HC in this league.

Just sayin,

Craig M,

No way on Leinart. He couldn't succeed with Fitzgerald and Boldin. No way!

moving on...

Who are the candidates for OC? Even though I've loathed him, Josh McDaniels might be the bet option. The other possible candidates I've heard about aren't that appealing (e.g., Childress).

Even if B. Marshall had issues with McDaniels before in Denver, I'm sure he'd welcome his arrival after working under Henning for a year - because he knows that McDaniels will get him the ball and take chances.

dont know how true it is but its being reported here in new york by parcells buddy mike francesa that sparano was given the choice by ross to be fired or to wait out the coaching search and see what transpired and sparano elected to stay on and wait it out but who knows

My thoughts on how to Fix the Fin's in 2011

Sign Kitna for 1 year to stablize QB's for a season

Bring in D. Cooledge at LG, Kalil @ C & let Carey & Jerry duke it out at RT

Sing Denagelo WIlliams and or Michael Bush. Draft another Rb for Depth

Sign S. Breaston or B. Smith for a speed WR & St returner

Darft a QB at some point

Try to draft an OLB who can rush to help Wake

Sign Richard Marshall and/or Kelly jennings as CB's

Sign a FS like B. Poole, A. Ball, D. Landy, M. Johnson, A. Bigby or D. Grant

Last thing I will say to the Sparano apologists: Good coaches stop the bleeding on a bad situation. They don't need to do translpant surgery after EVERY off-season.

If I was scheduled to make $3 Million dollars my boss could go shopping for whoever he wanted. I'd just sit there thinking "Man, I hope he doesn't fire me"

Tony Sparano is the "Peter Principle" defined. If you don't know what that is, google it.

Stop hating...we ain't that bad. True dolfan, whatever the circumstance is. We will be good in '11. Hope is all we can have, any given sunday.

Ithaca Phin Fan,

It's not impossible but I don't see McDaniels as being a fit in Miami. Not only did he have an ugly relationship with Marshall but also with DC Mike Nolan. I know Miami is the laughing stock of the NFL but there has to be some sort of end to all this incompetancy, right?

Miami have taken the Raiders spotlight this offseason as the the joke and punch line organization. Just when they make a dumb mistake and fire a coach who actually made his team over acheive regardless that un-dead Al Davis thought it was a playoff team.

We need to sign Michael and Reggie Bush.

you can never have enough Bush.

I love Bush.

If we sign ronnie we will even have a

If Sparano wants to trade places with me, i will gladly let Ross treat me like that for $3 million a year. There's one way not to be treated like that....WIN!

Posted by: Craig M | January 07, 2011 at 01:46 PM

Exactly. Sparano has no business whining to Armando. Anyone on here would trade places in a second.

I'll add I have zero issue with Ross going after an upgrade. Sparano has been a failure and is under contract.

Sparano WOULD find another job in short order, I don't dispute that at all.

But it sure as hell wouldn't be as an NFL head guy at those kind of dollars...not even close.

I'm not at all suggesting Tony was treated right here. I think Ross comes out looking AWFUL in all this...just saying those who think he should just walk away from 3-million bucks are being complete hypocrites because I think there's ZERO chance the would do it themselves.

"Quitters never win and Winners never quit."

Sparano is a decent Coach.
Maybe he can succeed in spite of this mess.

Kitna is staying in Dallas, so, that's that.

Harbaugh is OBVIOUSLY retarded, his stock will not rise.

Sparano is the HC TODAY! There's still a lot of time before next season, and playoff teams that have staff that cannot be interviewed. It would not suprise me in the least if he's not the coach next year.

Poizen, LOL!!! How about George W?

DyingBreed, the post was just a joke not a defense of Henne. I backed Henne to sit and learn the first year, then to learn from Pennington the second year, then as a starter. I know football is a team sport and the Dolphins had alot of problems this year, but. Henne showed nothing this year, as a matter of fact he digressed,I'm not happy about it. Even if he was missed handled by the HC and OC he should have shown more. And whats worse theres no one really out there.

If we would have kicked less field goals in the red zone we would be in the hunt today, also remember the kind of team we were three years ago

Ross did what he had to do, if the team turns around next year he will be call a genius and Sparano deserves the lack of confidence he got.

Stop bitching, if you are reading this you love the Fins and like me will be desperate for Dolphin Football by June.

Yeah, I'm not so sure Sparano has other offers on the table. If he did, he might have walked. A bird in the hand is better than 2 in the bush. If a nothing's guaranteed league like the NFL he doesn't have the reputation to up and quit and be assured another job...Much less a HC position.

How do we know Kitna is staying in Big D?

Joe Schmoe, good plan but it would cost over $100m dollars, if not a lot more.

Look the canadian starts bringing up past preseidents in the US. :)

I agree, this team is such a mess up and down from personel that fits a system from the late 80's to flat incompetancy.

It's like many people have been saying on here. It starts at the top. The Steelers, Pats, Eagles, Ravens and Packers all have an off year here and there but are consitant in their approach and have smart strong leadership.

Mark, I know that. Sadly, that's basically what is needed & I don't trust Ireland 1 lick to find more than 2-3 guys at most in the draft.

Can anyone tell me what decent OC or free agent would take a job knowing the HC will be gone soon. There will not be a franchise QB at pick #15 and we (Ireland & Spot man) would not recognize one if he was handed to them. All in all we as Dupfin fans are screwed for a few more years.

Home seems real, real pissed.Did he really leave the blog in disgust with Mando?

Joe I agree, BUT, try and keep in mind, Ireland will dratft with tony and a different OC this year. No Fat-Cells. they can see the crap in the last 2 years have not been stellar. they may have learned something.

The optomist in me.

Jo Kitna: 1/15/2009: Signed a four-year contract extension through 2013.

Ron, you answered your own question. If the OC does not succeed it is not on them it is on the HC, If they do succeed the HC position is much closer for them. It is a no lose situation.

What OC would NOT take a job knowing the coach is on the outs? That's an opportunity to do well and MAYBE get promoted QUICKLY!

Craig, if we could snag a DJ Williams (College football TE of the year - won mainly on his receiving prowress) - that would be a nice snag. Mallett in the 1st, Williams in the 4th. Could be worse.

marc, thanks. I had read somewhere he'd bea FA. I guess that would be under the assumption he'd be cut to not pay him. I guess he could become available this off season but right now, he's under contract. Thanks.

Ron from Cuse,

Exactly! What coach would want to come here knowing he might be out after 1 year. Also what OC would actually think they could succeed with so little in just 1 year.

Yes,I think so Home is pissed off at Mando for attacking Dolphin players ans owners.

Im just sitting here listening to my CHARLES MANSON ALBUM! Yup Google it!

I'm wondering what happened to my once proud, winning and consistent Football Team?

Wondering what happened to the least penalized, only had a 1 losing season Dolphins?

Reflecting on the firing of Shula, The JJ Burnout, Marino the 1 day GM, Wannyball, Satan in a golf hat, Cam and the family, Ownership GM changes every other year, failure to draft or attain a "game changer on either side of the ball in a decade, including the Bong.

In my last run-on sentence I should also mention the inability to evaluate and attain a franchise or even servicable qb besides Penn and maybe Feidler?

We are a Dolphin family over here, through and through. My 22 year old kid never got to really see the greatness of the Dolphins.

Armando picked up on another point I have been trying to make. The rest of the NFL talent, coaches included don't want to come here anymore. Are we going to have to overpay like in Drop Marshall's case?

They change the stadium name every other year.
Maybe it's time to change the team name?

Miami WTFs ?
Miami Head Scrathers ?

Lastly I don't feel sorry for a coach who punts or kicks field goals on every 3rd and short. One that defers the opening kick off every game. One that can't manage the clock. One that Handcuffs his players not to make a mistake instead of encouraging them to play balls out within the system. One that can't develop any continuity in his baby, the offensive line and running game.

Charles Manson...have we fallen this far???

Kitna is under contract, will be 39, and openly said that he wants to finish his career backing up Romo.

While, we all know that players lie, just like coaches, just like OWNERS...

Kitna aint happening.

Homes is off the chain! Did you read his posts earlier,he is pissed with armando.

Andy, some have suggested the false premise of an extension would fool everyone in the NFL that Sparano would be around long term. As if that stopped Wanny from resigning the next year! LOL

Ross is a lot shorter to spell than whatshisface jackass!

the only thing that can salvage this mess is if i hear that we traded our 7th rounder (if we have one) and Henne for VY.....and Ireland for a prostitute

LOL The prostitute would certainly seal the deal!

this just in. video of miami's 2011 first rd pick:

Mark in Toronto,

I beleive it was me and you who were in agreement with Miami has to eventually pick a 1st round QB to stop this ongoing disaster at QB.

Let me ask you, do you really think Sparano who has to win NOW would take a QB and not address other huge positions of need like RB or WR or fix his prized o-line for 5th or is it 6th time?

I would love Mallet in Miami or a 1st round worthy talent like Cam Newton but do you see it really happening?

I am not embarrassed by the search. I am disappointed by the way our local media is dragging our organization, owner, and coach through the mud.
Unless there are some sources or citations I am missing, this sounds like a lot of speculation presented as negative facts. Seems like the entire local media is doing this right now and I don't get it.

As far as I know, none of the Dolphins beat writers or columnists were in on the meetings, and by their own admissions don’t have good enough contacts (can not even get injury reports before national media) to actually know what was said between Ross, Ireland, Peterson, Sparano, Gruden, Cower, or Harbaugh. I haven't heard any of the parties involved say anything negative about the process.

Do we know that Ross didn’t say, "Coach, I understand you had issues this year and I understand everything you've just explained, but it's my duty as owner to go look around for the best coach I possibly can. So I'm going to take the next couple of days to do exactly that. I hope you understand and can be patient while that process plays out. If you can't be, I understand that, too." We don’t know unless we received some inside information from Ross, Ireland, or Sparano for the first time… ever.

I also haven't heard any players say anything negative about retaining Sparano. It doesn’t seem like they have lost any respect for him, though the local media continue to force metaphors of scorned girlfriends, neutered animals, and whatever dangles in the wind upon us. I haven’t seen any player hint that they would not play hard far him as a result of this search. Maybe they will even rally around him.

Ross knew what he had with Sparano. He tried to improve the situation by aggressively going after the hottest available names. He was unable to land them, so he kept Sparano. I like Sparano and think he can succeed with improved offensive play calling and quarterback play. I don’t view being the fall back to the hottest names in coaching, NFL or college, and making 2.5 million a year, after a 7-9 season no less, as a slap in the face. And it is much better than the merciful firing that was recommended by the local media. I also appreciate an owner who is willing to try to improve the team. It is not the first time an owner has spoken with potential replacements and while retaining the current coach. We don’t know what was said between Ross, Ireland, and Sparano.

I appreciate the local media, but they continue to be overly dramatic and negative. Now the problem is that perception becomes reality. Local media members, who don’t know what happened, for some reason are assuming the worst. National media members and casual fans, for some reason are assuming the local media’s speculations are facts and everyone is now “embarrassed.” Well, you know where the door is. Your local sporting goods store probably carries jerseys from all 32 teams. I for one will continue to be a fan. I am excited about seeing how this team improves, just like I have been at the end of every other disappointing season. Don’t worry; if we win some games next year, I’ll welcome you back from the ledge and show you where to deposit your Sanchez replica.

Ross is playing it just like Sparano would, SAFE.
He is kicking Field Goals and letting the "D" hold the game.

Now Tony knows how the fans feel! Instead of playing to win games and increase the score like they do in New England, Philly, and Indianapolis, Tony chooses to take the ball out of his offenses hands and hand the game over to the Kicker and the "D". Ross just did the same thing. Put a coach under contract in his back pocket (SAFE) and go searching for the holy grail. If the holy grail does not materialize Tony's back on. Ol' Tony gets paid a handsome sum no matter what.

Some folks may not like this, but it is good business. If Tony does come back one thing he knows for sure...major improvements this year or GOODBYE. As a life long fan I believe this is good pressure. Way to go Mr. Ross!

The people who think that Jeff Ireland is the reason we didn't get Cowher and even Harbaugh are not reading between the lines. The reason Ross doesn't want to give control of personnel to Cowher is because he has already given it to Carl Peterson. That is Ross' crony and the only reason he hasn't officially named Peterson vice president of football operations is because Parcells officially still has that position despite scaling back his duties considerably. As soon as Parcells is 100% out of the picture Peterson will assume that role and Ireland will be his puppet GM. What Ireland will focus on is scouting which was what he did with the Cowboys and throughout his career in the NFL. Peterson is a wheeler and dealer and he will have final say on contracts and personnel. That is the structure that is going to be put in place officially in the near future. So essentially if we want to find another coach we are going to have to get a good offensive or defensive coordinator who is not well known and hope he is a diamond in the rough because no established coach or hot shot coordinator or college coach is going to allow this structure to be forced on them by Ross. No one with any previous success is going to work for a loser like Carl Peterson NO ONE!!! So get ready Dolfans for years of at best mediocrity and at worst perennial losing seasons as the Steven Ross and Carl Peterson show has come to town and is here to stay for the foreseeable future. After twenty five years of loyal fandom I am done with this trainwreck of a team. Thank you Mr. Ross for ruining one of my favorite pastimes. Goodbye!!!

There's really only about a dozen GREAT QB's out there, but, there's about 25 or more that I'd take over Henne, and there's bound to be a few gems hiding on the bench SOMEWHERE.

marc, that's Jo Kitna, we want Jon Kitna :))))

Joe, personally I think if you draft 2 to 3 7-year starters every year in the draft - you are doing exceptionally well.

Think about it - there are 22 starters on a football team. If you draft 3 guys sho will start for the next 7 years, you are turning over your entire roster by the time a guy turns 30-32 years of age. Perfect.

Ireland to his credit has done that every year 2-3 long term starters and some solid depth players. Throw in 1 or 2 long term starters in free agency and that only adds to it.

Ireland has done the job - sure it could have been better. But he's a long way better than the previous regimes. however, the job will not be complete until he finds that 7 year starter at qb. Then the resume is complete.

Ben Franklin is the best president of the United States who was never president of theUnitd States.

Why do you want Vince Young ? So he can run around with his low scoring on the wonderlic, naked, running in the streets with a gun , calling for mommy leadership skills or the I quit playing for my teamates leadership skills. Read once in awhile!!

LOL @ all the people who are quitting and going away forever but will post a 2 or 3 more blogs from now.

Please stop it.

We bring you so much joy in the holiday season and then you throw us on the curb like common trash.

You people suck.

Andy, honestly I don't see it because like you siad, Sparano and Ireland are looking at 2011 and only 2011. And anyway, after seeing what this guy did to Henne and White, in some ways, I would feel better if the Qbpick was made by a different regime or one that has more stability, because it will be a 2-3 year project.

MarK. That's nice and all, but we have a few starters that SHOULDN'T BE!

First name off the top of my head....SEAN SMITH!
