Coach talk of the day, but QBs are the thing

The topic of coaching is apparently a big deal in Sunday's Miami Herald, with one columnist ripping the idea of retread coaches while also applauding the fact Bill Belichick doesn't hire retread coaches -- and thereby forgetting Belichick himself was a retread when New England hired him after a fiasco in Cleveland.

Don Shula, by the way, was also a retread. He won more games than any coach in the history of professional football but the Dolphins recycled him after Shula fell out of favor with Baltimore owner Carroll Rosenbloom, who no longer wanted Shula.

Dick LeBeau was a bust as the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals. The Pittsburgh Steelers recycled him as their defensive coordinator and he's helped them win two Super Bowl titles since 2006 and Pittsburgh has the stingiest defense in the NFL this year.

So recycling isn't so terrible if you put the right person with the right situation.

Sheesh.

In my column, I tell you the hiring of offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is a Hail Mary by the Dolphins based on his history and the players he's likely going to have to work with in Miami.

Speaking of players, and finding players and adding players -- that is more important for the Dolphins to do this offseason than anything else. This column gives you names of a couple of veteran quarterbacks the Dolphins will absolutely consider this offseason, assuming labor peace is finally achieved.

Frankly, I'm not excited about any of the veterans likely to be available. Orton? Young? McNabb? Bulger? Flynn? Maybe Kolb, if you overpay?

Let us start out understanding that certain QBs are primarily West Coast offense types. And the Dolphins do not employ the West Coast offense. So I don't think the Dolphins will be hot in pursuit of Donovan McNabb.

Other QBs don't make sense based on what it will cost to get them. Kevin Kolb could be the starter again in Philadelphia at some point next year. Yes, the Eagles are apparently going to try to re-sign Michael Vick, but one does not get rid of a good player because you have another good player on the roster.

So the Eagles are approaching this with the idea of keeping Kolb, barring a significant and advantageous trade offer. If you are the Dolphins, do you trade a high pick or picks for a player as unproven as Kolb? Tough.

Kyle Orton? He was good last season with 20 TDs and 9 INTs. He has some chemistry with Brandon Marshall. He really does make the most sense of any veteran out there. But that assumes the Broncos are going to make him available. That assumes the price for acquiring him is not outrageous in Miami's view. That assumes much desperation by the Dolphins ...

... well, I guess he's a fit.

Carson Palmer? ESPN reported today he will ask to be traded from the Bengals. He will apparently threaten retirement if he isn't traded. The Bengals may be open to trading him, but again, the price is not going to be a bargain. Also, what has Carson Palmer won in the NFL?

This column also makes the point that adding a vet is not the only order of the day for Miami. The fact is the April draft is likely to come before a labor peace is forged. And so teams will go into the draft assuming they must address their needs in that draft without the benefit of a certain free agency ahead.

In the past, free agency came first, then the draft, then the remnants of free agency. Teams went for it in free agency, fill in with the draft where free agency failed them, and then filled in further with the last vestiges of free agency.

This time, if free agency is delayed as expected, teams will hit the draft as their first and best hope for soliving problems. And so, should the Dolphins take this approach, they will be adding a quarterback in the draft.

Who?

No idea. You know the names. Cam Newton, Ryan Mallet, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert. The Dolphins will look at all of them.

Hopefully they pick the right one ... this once.

Good article about how far the Dolphins are from being elite: http://thefloridagridiron.com/2011/01/how-far-are-the-dolphins-really/

Armando, who do you like as the best pickup at QB for the dolphins out of the big 4 coming out of college this year?

Mike, I read that article last night, and agree it is as close as it gets to an accurate evaulation of our franchise.

As beerphin asks Armando, which QB?

I'll share my choice(s) in order of preference...in the likely event that my favorite is drafted ahead of the Fins.

Bring it on Mando, bring it on...

Hmm, where'd I lay that darn fish-finder?

Just food for thought . Flacco, Ryan , Rodgers , Stafford , and Bradford all had immediate impacts on there team. There is a possibility that drafting a QB and tightening line could benefit

the more you see roethlisbereger in the superbowl a mobile qb thats big tall and get extend the plays .. the more appealing cam newton becomes

There is no rush to make a QB decision.

Let us see what happens with Henne, now that the QB coach and the OC are out.

I don’t think is his entire fault.

Definitely he needs to work better under pressure, but he has shown flashes of the franchise QB he can turn into.

There have been commentaries by some teammates stating that he was not allowed to think out of the box, he was asked to stick with the play calling and not to improvise.

The OL is not even close to being considered decent, and that is because the team’s coaches and FO got rid of 3 starters from the previous season, which was a good season regarding the rushing attack.

This year the ground attack was just ineffective and the OL is a big part of this mess.

I think the Dolphins made a mistake by not firing Coach Sparano and then go out to the market to find his replacement. No coach will accept a job when there is no vacancy.

Even though I think there is no rush (because I don’t see any QB on the draft to be taken on the first round), if the price is right, the Dolphins should explore vetran free agent QB’s possibilities.

The Dolphins need to add the more quality players they can through the draft, and do not waste a pick on a QB that is not going to be that good (look what happened with Pat White).

I can not figure out why the majority of bloggers here think the "job-save mode" regime is looking to draft a QB this year!! LMFAO!!!!!!That's akin to a sales manager who is told "Turn it around, or, else!" hiring a green, novice salesman to boost his numbers and save his job. Some of you guys are really dreaming about drafting a QB this year. Miami will sign a veteran, free agent QB to try and save the coach and GM's jobs. Don't take much stock in the contract extensions. Those were given out to create a safe, cozy atmosphere for player and asst. coach signings. C'mon!! Wake up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Orton ears a oooh!

If I had a magical-crystal-ball, I'd still not know what this organization will do in the off season...

For that matter, even if I lent the ball to FO, they'd likely break it on accident and get it all wrong anyway.

That is not true what you said about Shula. Shula wanted out of Baltimore and had a friend (I believe it was Charles Bricker) approach Joe Robbie if he were interested in Shula. Robbie called the Colts, but Rosenblum was out of the country, so they talked to Rosenblum's son who granted the Dolphins permission to speak with Shula. Rosenblum was extremely upset when he returned and discovered what his son had done, I beleive he even sought legal action to keep Shula from leaving.

First and foremost we don't need the has been McNabb or the dive Young. Henne can be successful look at Breeze's first two years and all the failures arent on Henne even though he did make mistakes. I still think he is the answere. GO PHINS FOREVER!!!!!!

I'll take orton in a heartbeat

The top QBs in the draft in order are;

1. Mallet

2. Newton

3. Ponder

4. Dalton

5. Gabbert / Locker

I can't figure out what people like about Gabbert and Locker. Both those guys sucked last year.

If we decide to go RB instead of QB with the first pick, then we should take Mikel Leshoure from Illinois. That kid is a beast, 6'0" 240. He had 1,650 yards rushing last year for 127 ypg and 6 yards per carry in the Big Ten. Everyone loves Mark Ingram, but this kid is much better. Ingram is solid, but I'm not even sure if Ingram is the best running back on his own college team.
