Two vastly different opinions on Brian Daboll

I have a great amount of respect for Bernie Kosar. He was a star the minute he stepped on the practice field at the University of Miami as a reshirt freshman. He carried that stardom to a national title, a great NFL career, and a Super Bowl ring.

I also have respect for former Dolphins fullback and current Saints running back Heath Evans. He's smart and tough and he's got a Super Bowl ring as well.

So it's jarring that two guys who usually view the game through a similar prism disagree so vehemently on their opinions of new Dolphins offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

Kosar knows Daboll from the offensive coordinator's last few years in Cleveland. Kosar was commissioned by Browns owner Randy Lerner to study the Cleveland offense and identify that which was right and wrong with the unit. Kosar came away convinced Daboll was among the things that was right with that offense.

"I know I've gotten a bit of a reputation for disliking and criticizing the way some offensive coaches have been doing their jobs lately, but I can honestly tell you Brian Daboll is not among those guys I would criticize too much," Kosar said during his regular Friday morning segment on my radio show, Armando and the Amigo, on 640-Sports in South Florida.

"Brian is a guy who knows the game as well as anyone. You can sit down with him, as I have, and talk about offensive football and strategy and come away pretty impressed with his ideas and his approach  ... Brian's work with Colt McCoy was one of the reasons he played better and better as a rookie."

Well, that's reassuring, especially coming from a former quarterback who played in Cleveland, Dallas and Miami. It gives hope that if Daboll was a big reason the game didn't seem to big for McCoy, perhaps he can help Chad Henne climb out from under his struggles of the past two years.

But later in the afternoon on Friday, Evans went on ESPN 760 in Palm Beach and shared an opinion of Daboll that was nearly the polar opposite of the one Kosar shared.

"The Dolphins probably just got worse," said Evans, who played in New England from 2005-2008 thus was there while Daboll was a receivers coach for Bill Belichick. "... When he was in New England, he was never a guy I considered the brains of the operation.

"Now, listen, obviously there's been a lot of growth from his stint with [Eric] Mangini. He probably learned a lot under [Mike] Holmgren over the last year he's been there with Clevleand. As soon as I saw it, I second-guessed the decision. A franchise that is really just struggling for success, why do you take an unproven commodity? ... I second-guess it ... In the coaching realm, I'm not sure that was the right decision for an offense that already lacks a lot of the things that it needs."

And so we are left hanging for now. We are left, I suppose, waiting to see Daboll do his work to measure what the Dolphins new offensive coordinator has to offer. At that point, we'll see whether Kosar or Evans are correct.

These (TS as HC and new OC) are gap-fill, i.e., transitional transactions until CBA is finalized. Ross did not have an epiphany on TS, he realized that BIG names are not moving until CBA. Contract extensions and hiring low-salaried OC are tactical moves not strategic.

If you are selling a product and the product is rejected by its consumers and the market, keeping and 'doubling down' on same mgmt team will not create more consumers or change the marketplace. "We understand and hear our customers' dissatisfaction with Product X. Therefore after long meetings with stockholders and executives, we have decided that the customers deserve more of the same and will extend the existing mgmt team to move forward with the exact same plan. Mediocre Products believes the customers just do not understand the product yet and a few more years of it will be what the market needs."

This is the message to the marketplace (AFC EAST) and to the fans. Or, its a reuse and Ross is finding that BIG NAMES will not move until CBA is in concrete. I am going with the concrete. Otherwise, Ross is Ralph Wilson's long lost child.

Mando, you act like these opinions are on par. Even after you listed their credentials?!?! As a long time cane and fin fan...whose opinion here really matters here? Someone thats seen it all and whose job it is to pick these things apart? Or some role player that was on the team where Daboll was an even younger coach just cutting his teeth? Kinda shows how Evans thinks about people he thinks are beneath him. Thats the definition of a HATER. I'll take Kosar's word everytime. BTW-did Evans ever sit down with Daboll and discuss professional offensive philosophy? Bernie has experienced and forgotten more offense than some journeyman fullback. Give this fiery young coach whose obviously driving to make a name for himself a chance to see what he can do with our boys!

For some "odd" reason, I place more value on what a quarterback(s) say. Kosar and Pennington have both raved about this guy and his ability to work with QBs, I consider them both pretty smart offensive minds and reliable sources...Evans well he's a running back so I'm pretty sure he didn't work a lot with the QB or receivers coaches in New England...Bottom line if Beligenius liked him in New England then I'm sure he's good. Mando get a quote from Belicheck on what he thinks of the guy. Maybe then you won't get so many people hating on your weak post!

Btw- when it comes to evans and his mouth...Why dont we take a look at the current trajectory of the 3 careers we're talkin about. Daboll, Kosar, Evans. Daboll just secured a top level position with OUR Dolphins due to his energy, creativity, ideas, and qb development abilities. Kosar is a legend that will work for whoever he wants, whenever he wants. And what is Evans doing lately? Wait who is he again?

We do not need or want another ONCE WAS GREAT couch that will insist when things don't work out that everything else with the got in his way. PErfect example, Big Tuna=Big Turd.

I only know one thing for certain of our new OC; he must make good, he must push himself and his players at all cost, for this stint with the Dolphins is his once in a lifetime second chance.

I will take this couch fighting for his proffesional life over and retread past hero who is to cool to care.

Dolphin Fan since 1970!

Gonna give the new OC da baldy a chance.

Draft Cam Newton
Period

and another shameless plug for Bernie Kosar & da Laughing Latino Hyena radio show

I will go with heath evans comments, i expect the dolphins to be at the bottom of the division next season.

Come on man , bernie kosar is a cleveland and miami dolphins fan only and idiot would believe him.

lol about this story and the posts that follow it... i agree with FWE... ultimately, we'll just have to grin and bear it... there is nothing that we can do to change it... he is the OC and that is that... the ENTIRE serious of events surrounding the Dolphins in the last month are extremely discouraging not the least of which is the Daboll hiring... my dilemma now is my approach to my fandom for the Dolphins next season... i don't dare schedule any trips down to Miami from J'ville for any games anytime soon but i do currently still want my 3 boys to grow up to be Dolphins fans... CURRENTLY...

Kosar, has one a national championship, but what did he do in the NFL. He was mediocre at best. Another Joey Harrington in my opinion. But, I would take his opinion over Evans who has practically done nothing other than get lucky enough to be on a championship Saints team.

All these years we have been told how great we were going to be. This is one off season where I/many have zero expectations from the Dolphins. I actually have no expectations as long as Ross owns this team. He does not know what he is doing just like Ireland and Sparano.

It is sickening to know the jets are the best team in the AFC.

***series of events, not serious of events!

Another make believe story by some jackoff on a blog with no F'in life

Why isn't there a post about the new RB coach???

PFT NOW IS REPORTING THAT THE LOW LIFE HEATH EVANS HAVE HARSH WORDS FOR BRIAN DOBALL .......... SOME PEOPLE HAVE NO SHAME,ANY THING TO GET THEM IN THE PRINT FOR FEW DAYS.....NO SHAME

Abraham Lincoln I want dinner at McDonalds . The Giants under Eli Manning when they beat NE in the Super Bowl. Eli is not elite nor was the defense

NOTICE THAT KOSAR ISN'T GETTING ANY AIR TIME OR PRINT ,ONLT THE NEGATIVE SELL ......OLD GAME

There is something about Cleveland that brings out the worst in everyone who is associated with that city. Lebron James, Bill Belechick. Both have been trashed by Cleveland. Oh Art Modell, owner of the Browns before he left for Baltimore and then won a Super Bowl. No one is good enough for Cleveland. I think Cleveland fans should take a look in the mirror. How does a coach like Belechick suck but now he is considered by many as one of the greatest coaches in NFL histor...go figure Cleveland

IF there is a season, the Fins will go 5-11. 3-13 at worst, 7-9 if they excel.

We got Daboll because nobody else wanted to be here and the FO didn't want anyone who might take the stage from Tony. Heck, McDaniels even refused to interview here.

No really good FAs will want to come here because of the QB, FO and HC and how they view the fiasco this team has become. This means no immediate improvement on the O-line where it is needed most.

On Henne: I think the kid is a waste of a roster spot BUT with an ELITE O-line, and a system that only asks a minimum of intelligence, awareness and only mediocre technique plus another ELITE receiver and an ELITE running back, Henne might be just okay and we could go 9-7... wth an ELITE O-line, RB and WR and an easy peasy system

If you get cut by the great one (belichick), then you must truly suck...

Why does this matter at all? These are just two guys opinions. They may as well come on this blog and say their peace. Sure both of these guys are credible, and we are all just a bunch of folks here for the debate. But in the end, nobody knows how Daboll is going to work out here. Since it is a done deal, why continue to worry about it. One point that gets overlooked He saw something he liked, and that is the only opinion that matters.

WTF Armando..why was my post edidted? There was no foul language, or suggestive statements. It was condensed, and the best part removed?????

The only way we are going to get a superstar QB is to have a bad year next season and draft in the top five. All these stupid moves by the Dolphin front office will only ensure that happens and it will seal the fate of of HC and GM and that's what fans want, so let it happen. Just enjoy next year's failures and find happiness in the fact that these guys will be gone under there on undoing. Next season I will enjoy football without having to worry about Fins making stupid mistakes and blowing games because I am resigned to the fact they will not improve over 2010. And I have the future to look forward to because Ross will not continue be embarassed much longer when he is with his NY business associates and friends. He will put an end to this maddness. Just one more season, that's all.

Jimmy Jam as much as I love the Phins even if we had elite evrything I think this year is going to be tough . Have you seen our schedule . I'm telling you we pissed off the Football Gods man its rough . The Miami Dolphins will host home games featuring the Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins. Away from South Florida, the Dolphins will travel to play the San Diego Chargers, Kansas City Chiefs, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys. Not to mention our normal dose of Buffalo,New York and New England

just fond out that ross gave the gm an ext

As I said when Daboll was hired...wake me up in a year because I don't think I'll be able to watch them in 2011. By this time next year we'll be talking about our new coach, his new staff and who we're going to pick with the #1 draft choice. In the meantime, we'll continue to be the laughing stock of the league. Too bad we can't replace the owner!

the OC isnt your problem it is a non NFL calibur QB, no running game, that is just the offense..

Clark I partially agree . Yes an Elite QB can change the play at the line but you still need a good OC as well

A MULTY YEAR DEAL DNT NO HOW MANNY YEAR OR HOW MUCH $

Fix the O-line, get a better TE, and even Henne will improve.

Our draft should be used to fix the o-line and special teams.

Pick up a proven RB maybe two if you dont resighn Ronnie and Ricky, and bring in Young, McNabb or Linnhert in free agency.

I think I would Sighn McNabb and Linhert. McNabb to get us through to the point when Linhert or Henne is ready.

Go Dolphins!! We get an O that can score 21 points a game and we are in the playoffs where anything can happen. To many people over reacting I will hold my breath till Free agency is over.

NEXT YEAR WILL BE HENNE'S YEAR ,IF YOUR AT HIS NUMBERS YOU WILL FIND GREAT FUTURE IN HIM ,HE'S NOT A BUST LIKE PRIVOUS QB'S .IN HIS SECOND YERS HE'S ABOVE 500 ,NO CLUB GIVES UP ON A QB LIKE THAT .STAY TUNE.

WHY I FEEL SOMEONE IS TALKING TO HIMSELF?

ALoco you have a good point . I admit his numbers arent that bad considering who was calling plays and coaching him , but I still think he is to robotic. After 3 years you should be able to read a Defense and call some shots. At 6-4 or whatever you shouldnt have passes batted down . Those are his faults and they need to be fixed

I HOPE MARSHALL IS PRACTICING HARD NOT TO DROP THE BALL.
I HOPE FASANO IS PRACTICING HARD NOT TO DROP THE BALL.
I HOPE HARTLINE WILL BE WAVIED

ALoco agree bout Fasano and Marshall but not Hartline. That boy is probably the fastest guy on the team , if he could learn to catch he could be a beast. My prediction is that he is the sleeper on Offense this year that Wake was on Defense last year

Richard, this going to be the year the future of the people would be on the firing line ,

sparano........................... 2.8 million ....... 5.8 million if he gets fired
nolan.............................. 1 million
doball.......................... 800,000
henne........................... 28 dollars.................. 3 dollars guaranted
marshall...................... 50 million........... 25 million guaranteed
dansby............... 48 million...................... 17 million guaranteed..

still,i believe next year we WILL BE IN PLAYOFFS,NO WAY WE WILL DO WORST THAN 1-7 AT HOME.

Richard - Good point. 5-11 sounds more reasonable in that light. Ugh.

Jimmy Jam lmao . Sorry bro but when I saw the schedule I just bout crapped . Somebody doesnt like the Phins. Maybe all our fair-weather fans and horrible Home Field atmosphere has pissed off the Eternal Football Deities

ALoco yes we can be 0-8 at home . Lmao Henne 3 dollars guaranteed

It will be a happy Thanksgiving next year, Sparano will be fired by then.

Nobody listens to your show Armando.
Chipmunk face = no tv time
Annoying hihgh pitch voice = Bad radio
Good at blogging though . except for radio plug ins.
Thanks again Mando , try not to delete.

For all you non-believers and whiners: Jeff Ireland was signed to a contract extension today. Mr. Ross said he has assembled a good young team.....Good for Ireland and the Dolphins. Article at PFT if interested

bobbyd12 what PFT so i can check it out

Herald is out to lunch as Ireland signs an extension.

IRELAND WAS AWARDED 2 YEARS CONTRACT EXT WORTH 4.8 MILLION FOR 2 YEARS...... NOW WE CAN TRUST HIS DRAFT PICKS.

I SAID EARLY HOW CAN WE TRUST IRELAND TO DRFAT W/HONEST IF HE HAS ONLY ONE YEAR LEFT ....

GOOD JOB MIKE DEE

THIS CONTRACT MEANS JEFF IRELAND WILL OUT-LAST MR SPARANO .

CORRECATION, ....JEFF IRELAND HAS SIGNED 3 YEARS DEAL W/DOLPHINS

WE WIL SEE A QB SIGNED VIA FA..........THAT'S A SURE THING NOW .

These were the available OC's: those fired by thier NFL teams and those fired by thier college teams.

lets see we have a coach and gm that cant build an offensive line going on 4 years now, they cant get their coaching staff settled going on four years now, their team pathetically tanked down the stretch for 2 straight years now and they both get extensions and theres some so called dolphin fans that are happy about this kind of "stability" all i can say is wow

Lord help me accept the things I cannot change (Anything Miami does)the courage to change the things I can ( Sypport my team no matter what )and the wisdom to know the differance (just suck it up and be strong ) :)Go Dolphins

Looking forward to Mary Tyler Moore tonight. TV Guide says that Phyllis and Rhoda get into a spat over Mary's affections. Then, of course, Carol Burnett is always good for a laugh.

With the Dolphins, I think we're going to run all over the Raiders in the AFC Championship game tomorrow at the Orange Bowl. I could even see Griese getting some scrambling yards behind that line. Probably won't have to pass much at all. I'll call it 27-10 Dolphins.

In the NFC, I like the Vikings.

Oh, and Nixon sucks. Did you hear those tapes? What a crook.

do we really expect any less from this ignorant organization. some of you act surprised... the big mistake was letting them do it for another year

ITS WAFFLE TIME ON VENUS!!

Contracts mean nothing, often they are only false votes of confidence with plenty of fine print allowing them to be terminated.

5-11..GO SLEEP....OUT TO WORK

Once the fire Sparano around Thanksgiving, Irelands job will be in jeopardy because most likely any new coach won't want a gm who spends 3 years building an oline that yields only one solid player.

ALoco...out of work is you...there isn't a time I pass by here that I don't see your silly posts. You have no life. I assure you my salary is at least double yours, if not triple...assuming you have something more than a minimum wage job.

Evans is right. Why would hire an unproven commodity? Actually he proved to be worse than Dan henning the last two seasons.

Flipper13 I say give him a chance. Any coach in the begining is unproven and he didnt have much to work with. Lets see what happens . Who knows maybe this guy turns out to be the Mike Nolan of Offense

Good players make the coaches look good, not the other way around. I have no idea how well Daboll will do, he is the least of our concerns really. If they don't seriously improve the level of offensive talent, he won't do any better than Henning.

0x80 I agree with you. Hopefully we will dedicate our draft and FA to doing just that .
