Dolphins own free agent priority? Paul Soliai

Much of the unrestricted free agent focus surrounding the Dolphins' own players has centered around the offensive backfield in general and running backs Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams in particular.

I would tell you that is probably not the place the Dolphins should be placing their priority.

I would tell you the priority should be on defense. Right in the middle of all the action. At nose tackle.

Paul Soliai.

Soliai, drafted in 2007, is expected to hit free agency once the players' union and the NFL get their act together and agree on a collective bargaining agreement. He will not re-sign with Miami before a new collective bargaining agreement is reached, according to a league source, because he wants to maximize his earning potential and the 30 percent rule makes it hard to do that until after his current contract expires and he becomes a free agent.

So the Dolphins have "zero," chance of re-signing Soliai before he hits free agency, the source close to the player said Tuesday.

What does that mean?

It means the biggest body on the Miami defensive line, the player who started 14 games at nose tackle for Miami last year, will hit free agency assuming the league does not establish a lull period during which current teams have exclusive rights to negotiate with their own players.

I am told if Soliai hits the open market, it will be a free-for-all. He wants to remain with the Dolphins. But he wants to get paid. And there will be interest because there always is for a 355 pound defensive lineman that has proven he can play.

In talks between the Dolphins and agent David Canter, I am told by my source, the Dolphins are being cautious. Canter could not be reached for comment, but I'll keep trying. He is, after all, a weekly contributor on my radio show Armando and the Amigo.

I can understand why no deal has been reached yet. Soliai played better than he has at any time in his career in 2010 so he wants to be rewarded. The Dolphins are almost certainly guarding themselves against Soliai being a one-year wonder because he's been a reserve his previous three seasons.

Thus we have a gap that needs to be bridged.

Soliai was very good last year, tying Kendall Langford for the lead in solo tackles among defensive linemen with 33. He also led all defensive linemen with eight tackles for losses with eight. Bottom line, when the Dolphins lost defensive end Jared Odrick after the regular-season opener and needed to move Randy Starks from nose tackle back to defensive end, Soliai's play made that possible.

I imagine the Dolphins could retry the Starks at nose tackle experiment, but the bottom line is Soliai was more productive than any starting nose tackle the Dolphins have had under their current administration. So they should do everything possible to keep from losing that kind of talent.

There is also an inherent risk for the Dolphins in being overly cautious with Soliai. Unless they get that lull period, they could risk losing him to another team. And the New York Jets could be in the market for a starting nose tackle.

Just saying.

Yeah Darryl, it is a mess. And for teams like the Dolphins, it puts them even further behind.

we should let mike nolan decide how valuable paul soliai is and trust his judgement. sparano/ireland have made too many mistakes to trust their judgement on talent.

The 3 Amigoes!

Wolfman1313...

Excellent points @ 12:30....hadn't really thought of it like that....in those terms.....

Kris..Good point. If the Phins think any of these guy are the future they will pull the trigger. I may disagree. But luckily for us I don't get a say in player moves.

At least in a holdout situation, the rookies get their own camp, and attend mini camps. They can at least get familair with the playbook, and get some reps. Now imagine if you throw a holdout onto this year as well? It could be week 4 before some of these rookies join their teams.(this scenario seems unlikley because I think part of the CBA will include a rookie salary scale)

Ross should just fire Sporano and hire Nolan it makes sense after all thats happened to the coaching staff as it would be an obvious upgrade and you could flip flop a few more coaching positions while your at it i thihnk the towel boy is up to be the next DC just give T Sporano Parcells old job... its not like he did anything anyways so no losses

Wolfman....Good stuff the last couple of days. I have enjoyed your posts...

Kris....Sweet someone got my joke!!

See you boys on the flip side...Got to take Eldrick(my bulldog) to the vet for a checkup. 4 1/2 hour drive there and back. The glory of living in the middle of nowhere Montana.

Darryl, coaches are forbidden to have any contact with players until new CBA gets done. Camps and playbooks are contact.

Cam Newton for starting Miami Dolphin QB

Chad Henne as serviceable back up

Period

have a HARRPy day :(

WOLFMAN131,

IS THE NEW FOOTBALL CZAR ON THIS BLOG .

Cocoajoe...Yeah, I was talking about in a regular year where there is no lockout. The rookies at least get to go to mini camps, and get their playbooks. I should have worded it different...See ya!!

ALoco - LOL....now you went and put the pressure on.

WOLFMAN,

THERE'S A FEW LEVELS OF FOOTBALL KNOWLEDGE ON THIS BLOG;

1-CZAR
2-VERY KONWLEDGABLE
3-VERY GOOD
4-PEOPLE JUST FILLING THE PAGES
5-2WATT

It's funny how things come full circle. My position is the guys (CraigM, bobbyd12, others) who were pushing for the return of Sparano this year for continuity and stability had a point. I disagreed (didn't think Sparano was the guy to make things happen), but Ross made his choice. So, I'm HOPING Sparano doesn't screw things up and gets canned next year. I'm HOPING he turns things around and solidifies his job.

Not sure if you guys (wolfman, DD) were on that side (Sparano's or not), but now you're (or at least someone did) thinking Sparano gets canned in 2011, so wait it out (to draft a QB).

So, I used to be the pessimist, now you guys are making me into the optimist.

I want to draft a QB this year because waiting another year just makes it another year longer said QB will play. Sure, there probably won't be OTAs and mini-camps, but there's the WHOLE season for a rookie QB to take snaps in practice, learn the playbook, sit on the bench and watch, etc.

Only reason NOT to take a QB this year is if there isn't a QB available that you want. Otherwise, bite the bullet, take a QB, see what happens.

Two words. Franchise tag.

Franchise him, 1 year at a top salary and gives you time to negotiate

Bobby where in god's name did you come up with that load of crap??? Did you not read Mando's post yesterday? This team has done a good job not great but good when it comes to drafting. Much better than the previous 2 administrations. They do not make a lot of stupid decisions outside of Pat White so relax they will get it taken care of. I have faith in Ireland I like what I've seen thus far.

Also, if Ross fires Sparano next year, it'll be another in a long line of horrible decisions. People, TIME MATTERS! These guys aren't getting younger (even though it's a young team). And with free agency, you're not promised tomorrow.

Starting over next year pretty much will say in retrospect Ross was willing to throw 2011 into the wastebasket of history. He'd have put up all that money on salaries and everything for what? For a coach you weren't fond of and got rid of the very next year anyway? That's stupid to me. This was the year to fire Sparano if you wanted him gone.

Now, it's pretty much sink or swim with Sparano (unfortunately for greg z. and others). Miami hasn't gone to the SuperBowl in 30+ years, they shouldn't be wasting even 1 year like they would be if Sparano gets canned after 2011.

the right thing to do for soliai is TO SIGN MULTI YEAR CONTRACT WITH MIAMI W/DECENT MONEY .I THINK HE WILL BE SCARED TO BE FRANCHISED .

No chance in hell or the SFLA heat that Ireland let's Soliai escape. He'll pay him.

One year wonder? I doubt it. Soliai's play improved over the first 3 years because he grew up. Fergy as a mentor had a hand in that.

The second toughest position to fill is NT, behind QB.

ALoco - I wish the AM radio gods saw me in that light. about 7 or 8 years ago I wanted to try to break into AM sports radio. I had a little experience in that a buddy of mine and me had a once a week 1/2 hr AM gig talking about accounting....yeah, I know...boring...which is why is lasted all of a couple months. Anyway, I got myself this little side kick deal on a Sat morning show....like as in 3:00AM morning show. Unfortunately, I don't really follow a lot of other sports, but I love football. Being part of the show though I had to research a lot of other sports I wasn't too interested in. On top of that, I think my passion...even in football focused topics wained a bit due to the fact that where I'm at everyone wants to talk HS football, Broncos, Cowboys, or Raiders.

Needless to say, didn't last too long...I think it was about 4 weeks. At least I got my Sat mornings back though.

aloco, remember, just because it says water proof paint on the label, you still have to empty the pool before you start painting the walls and floor of it.lol

and no aloco. you can not explore the surface of the sun at night k.?.lol

DC - I was pretty on the fence in RE to Sparano. I'm the one who said earlier he would be gone after 2011 so to wait. I can see your point but at the same time I have concerns that (and this is of course dependent on Sparano not making it)....Fins draft a guy and next year the whole coaching staff and FO changes....direction of the team changes...new coach says that's not my guy, etc.

I certainly hope the best for Sparano simply because I want to see my Fins win. But I do have some qualms with a FO and coaching staff in a state of flux going after a franchise QB. It seems to me that it could cloud their judgement resulting in poor decisions.

It seems to me that rooky QBs (and players in general) fair better on teams who have some stability in place (FO/coaching/team direction/identity, etc). Until the Fins can stabalize at the top, nothing good can happen....sh$%t roles down hill fast!

I just don't get all the harping on Ireland's mistakes by posters and the SFLA media.

Just don't get it. As if every high round draft pick every NFL team makes works out.

Sure the Pat Turner in the 3rd and Pat White pick in the 2nd were bad decisions.

But consider starters Ireland found in FA, Wake and Bess, Starks and Icognito.

He hit on Langford and Merling, Davis and Sean Smith, Jake Long and Misi. Odrick the jury is still out, Jerry too.

McDaniels for next to nothing in a trade.

Plus Hartline and Clemons, two late round picks who are starters, 4th and 5th rounders.

And folks discount the FA signing of Marshall and Dansby, but you have to have the Cap Space to make those moves, the GM is responsible for that.

Why doesn't someone, like Armondo who is pro sportswriter, do a comparative analysis of all the draft picks of all NFL teams over the last 3 years and compare how many of those picks worked or not. And inlcude all FA signings in the analysis. That should either shut people up or prove that Ireland is incompetent once and for all.

Cant they franchise tag him?

Actually wolf, that's a very good point. If we DID get a new HC, and he didn't like the QB, then that'd be a wasted pick.

So, it's tricky. But I don't think any Coach wouldn't want Cam Newton (if he was available). He has too much to offer.

Sign the poor guy.. We don't need any more holes to fill....

I don't think Ireland is the problem besides his mistake w/ Dez Bryant I believe he is making good draft decisions TS is the only one I am harping on at the moment

Those are very good comments, wolfman. Thankyou, hadn't thought about them.

Nah, it was mainly Bill Parcells that has made most of this Team.

Fat Paul has finally come into his own
For a large NT mammal he is in good shape
Fat Paul has developed well and made quite a few great plays thru out the year

No Brainer
Re Sign Fat Paul

and photograph the chemtrails you ignorant stupid dumbed down sheeple

Yea
Those big giant white line that linger for hours & "drip" and expand into chemical clouds every F!@#ing day

U know the ones that u idiots think are frozen water! LMAO!

Last year, Halloween fell on a week-end...

Some guys are just gamers. Soliai has gone through 3 seperate coordinators in 4 years, not to mention the Nose position is the hardest position to adjust to in the switch from 4-3 to 3-4. He barely got on the field until last year. Anyone who plays as hard as this guy does is not a one year wonder. Miami needs to lock him in for a good period of time, because if they franchise him his value will only increase. He has the potential to play at Ngata's level.

Coaching staff blows

For anyone who cares, this was posted on ESPN. It explained that numbers wise Henne was the second best QB in the AFC east. Dirty Sanchez had 15 dropped int's last year making him "lucky" to be where he was. Below is what was said about Henne.

Who was the unluckiest quarterback this past season? Henne. He threw 19 interceptions on the season but had only one dropped interception. That won't happen again. Henne remains a talented player, and the odds of his experiencing a rebound next season are pretty good. Before GM Jeff Ireland decides to blow a first-round pick on Jake Locker or Cam Newton, he may want to consider investing in more linemen and receivers to help out the QB.

Also get some good coaching around him...

dishpan, with the addition of tony sparano jr, and a few other inexperienced coaches, they should all be too dumb to screw up as bad as last year.

Really, DC, I didn't feel anything.

Mark my words ... Soliai will become Miami's Wes Wexler on the defensive side of the ball.

Unbelievable that they can approach his imminent free agency with "caution."

I keep praying for lightning to strike the Dolphins headquarters in Davie, but ...

Fat Paul is not a one year wonder
That is another ignorant statement from the Dolfan sheeple

Fat Paul has finally developed and is taking his profession seriously. Fat Paul had a lot to learn about his position and different techniques of a NT becoming effective

Fat Paul now is an accomplished NT
Not a one year wonder

ps
Did u see any chemtrails in the sky today
or did ur blind dumbass forget to look up again

Poizen, that's why my new bumper sticker will read:

HENNE FOR 2020!!!!

Let's sign him to a 20-yr. contract, and let's not even bring in any competition. We don't need a 2nd or 3rd string QB.

Chad effing Henne! I'm psyched!

Seriously though, Chad Henne made me forget all about Dan...Dan...what's his name again? Marino, that's it!

DC is silly, dont be mean my friend. I am just trying to get the masses more comfortable with what we have.

I just want to win, Dont really care about Henne.

QB Cam Newton will put Miami back on the map

Newton to Marshall, Bess & Hartline
not to mention improved TE performance

Wildcat w Cam Newton & Ronnie Brown

C`mon Man!

6.6 255 lb QB Cam Newton or
NOTHING!

When can Home buy the jersey!

You kjnow i want competition here. but not wasting a 1st round pick on one of these guys.

i understand Henne believers and also do see this year being his last chance to prove his worth but not drafting a QB becuz you wanna take that bet is stupid. Having a #1 talent QB is a good thing becuz if nothing else he still has trade value or gives great depth in case of injury. It becomes a Rivers Brees situation where you make an educated decision next year ahbout the future at QB rather than not seeing a yrs progression and guessing on the draft next year all over again if Henne fails. Having 2 good QBs is a good thing not a problem... Eagles are prolly going to get picks for Kolb and look at NEw england and how they fared trading Matt Cassell 1st rd talent is what is needed at the QB position on every NFL team .

Moisture

thats why alot of people have New England selecting Locker at 17. They have Brady but they also have the luxury of grooming 1st rd talent under a great QB If Brady were to play for the next 6 yrs they'd still have that 1st rd trade value at QB behind him which i'm sure some team will need. QB= most valuable player

Henne just needs a little help around him. If we can add Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Logan Mankins, Nick Mangold, Vincent Jackson, and Antonio Gates, he could be good, could be.

OPEN LETTER TO DC DOLPHAN;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

SO YOU WANT HENNE IN HIS FIRST YEAR AS A STARTER TO MAKE YOU FORGET DAN MARINO W/18 YEARS AS THE FINS QB ?

YOUR COMMENT IS A CLASSIC COMEDY ,YOUR HATE FOR HENNE IS VERY CLEAR .

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND ALL WHO DEPENDS ON YOU ...AMEN

LOL Poizen. You know I gotta give Henne a hard time. He deserves it for putting us through Weeks 13-16. We'll see what he does next year. I'll give him a chance during the season though to prove himself (that's the least I can do, right?).

DC IS TAKING THE LEADERSHIP ROLE AT THE GANG OF DEFEAT JOINT .DB LEFT THE GANG LAST NIGHT .

There is a complete idiot at the Sun Sentinel that specializes in slanted sports reporting and even publishes bogus reports on his fav players. Makes me wanna puke.
Omar coconut head Kelly still thinks sean smith who has dropped at least a dozen easy potential interceptions that hit the POSER BOY CB in both hands, is constantly out of position, cannot tackle, sucks on STs and has a grand total of one misfired junk breadbasket garbage interception in 2 full seasons of attempting to make something out of this Shucking & Jiving Ghetto Mouthed Homely Monkey Boy Fraud CB is actually going to be voted as one of the absolute best CBs in the AFC and is a lock in the NFL Pro Bowl

R U F!@#ing kidding me!?

Put down the Kool Aid Omar Kelly and get a grip man!

have a HAARPy day :(

OPEN LETTER TO ALOCO;;;;;;;;;

REFRESH MY MEMORY. DAN MARINO ALSO HAD A ROCKY FIRST YEAR (WHERE HE CAME IN MID-SEASON FOR THE STARTER), CORRECT? WHAT DID MARINO DO IN HIS FIRST FULL YEAR AS QB? OH, YEAH, I REMEMBER, 14-2. PLAYOFFS. MVP OF THE LEAGUE.

I GUESS IT'S TOO MUCH TO ASK A 1ST FULL YEAR QB TO SHINE, YOU'RE RIGHT, MY BAD.

FURTHERMORE, YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. HOW DARE I EXPECT MORE FROM A FOUR YEAR STARTER AT ONE OF THE PREMIER TEAMS IN COLLEGE. WHO BROKE EVERY RECORD THERE (SURPASSING NAMES LIKE BRADY.) WHO WAS THE 3RD BEST QB IN HIS DRAFT CLASS. WHO SAT AND WATCHED A MASTER AT WORK FOR A YEAR. I'M ASKING TOO MUCH!!!!

Henne will be a good back up
Anything else is foolish

6.6 255 lb QB Cam Newton will bring Miami back to "Something Special"

DC,

IF YOU GOING TO MESURE EVERY QB TO MARINO THE GREAT ,THEN YOU R ASSUMING THAT ALL QB'S PICKS AT THE DRAFT ARE GREAT AS MARINO ,THIS IS A FAULTY EXRSISE .

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND WHO DEPENDS ON YOU .AMEN

ALoco,

I'll accept being the leader of the Gang of Defeat, as long as you accept being the leader of the Gang of Repeat (as in, Repeat 7-9 record. Repeat mediocrity. Repeat watching Playoffs from home).

Agreed?

DAN MARINO IS IN A LEAGUE OF HIS OWN .YOU CAN'T COMPARE THE GREAT ONE WHO COMES EVERY 100 YEARS TO ANY OTHER QB.
