Franchise, transition tags out today but not for Dolphins

NFL teams can begin applying franchise and transition tags to their most valued projected unrestricted free agents starting today (Feb. 10) and that is notable to the Dolphins and you only because of my post yesterday about Paul Soliai.

Following that post, several of you e-mailed me suggesting the Dolphins use either the franchise or transition tag on Soliai to keep him locked to the Dolphins in 2011.

Um, not likely.

First, it must be said that franchise and transition numbers have not been officially released by the NFL. Secondly, the NFL players' union has vowed to take the NFL to court over the placing of the tags without a new collective bargaining agreement being in place. Finally, the idea doesn't make much financial sense.

The franchise tag, you must remember, is valued at the average of the top five salaries for players at that position. The transition tag is valued at the average of the top 10 salaries for players at that position.

For a NT/DT which is where Soliai falls, the projections for either tag are staggering. According to the good work of Brian McIntyre at Mac's Football Blog, the projected franchise tag tender in 2011 will be a whopping $12.3 million. The projected transition tag tender will be a whopper junior $9.4 million.

There is no way on earth the Dolphins will guarantee Paul Soliai that amount for one year.

There is no way, by the way, the Dolphins will guarantee any of their unrestricted free agents that kind of money. Thus you can be relatively certain the Miami Dolphins will not use either their franchise or transition tags in 2011 unless the rules or projections change somehow.

Why, you might wonder, would it cost so much to tag a defensive tackle that much in 2011 when the franchise tag number in 2010 was $7 million and the tranisition number was $6.35 million?

Blame Albert Haynesworth, who skewed the averages when his 2010 salary was $24 million.

Simply, the Dolphins aren't in make-Paul-Soliai-instantly-rich mode this offseason. They want to re-sign him. They've made him a couple of offers. None were exceedingly impressive to Soliai. None are said to have been worth even half of what a projected 2011 franchise or transition numbers might be worth.

So why would the team use either tag on him?

Oh, by the way, there is at least one nose tackle in this league worthy of a franchise tag -- Haloti Ngata of the Baltimore Ravens. He'll very possibly get tagged and will not be on the market when/if it opens following a resolution of the labor dispute.

What does that mean?

Good news for Soliai because that's one less NT teams will have the opportunity to sign, thus increasing his value. This kind of reminds me of the year the Dolphins had to pay Vernon Carey.

They didn't love the player. But there were really no other choices in free agency and the team wanted to address other issues in the draft. So they paid Carey. And he's been inconsistent since.

I get the feeling that is where we may end up with Soliai.

Kudos to Soliai..he played well in his contract year. It puts the team in a tough situation. It is a better option than if he flailed and we were in total limbo at NT. I'm sure the team will do everything within reason to sign him. I doubt many teams will be using this franchise tag before the CBA is resolved. Some may be forced to. But nobody knows what the deal will include. It isn't out of the realm of possibility that the franchise tag is eliminated meaning those contracts would be void. Who knows. That could be one of the reasons the NFL FO. has reccomended teams wait until after a deal gets done.

Well, if Soliai ends up walking then Starks has a season ending injury the run defense will be f*ucked in 2011.

I dont know what the answer is but I sure do know what it isnt!

That's some great inside story on our NT situation...............

George Washington was half-Chinese and half-Italian.

I hope that we can keep Soliai... But I am also just as aware as the Miami front office that Soliai was a Knucklehead for 3 year, allowing himself to balloon up like some sort of fat nightmare Samoan who sat around the village eating pork and bananas all day.
I can also recall very recently that he was unable to play more then 3 or 4 plays without needing airlifted off the field to the bench for 600 Liters of O2 and a bowl of palm hearts and Rice.
Then he gets into a contract year and keeps himself lean and mean and makes great plays... Like I said, I'm glad he did and I hope Miami keeps him. I also feel Soliai is 70/30 (bad for us) to go right back to bad habits and mediocre play. If Miami pay's the man... And I hope they don't back the money dump truck up to his house, but if they do pay the an and he goes all "Fat Albert" strikes again...

I hope they have not front loaded the contract with a bunch of signing bonuses and easy money. I would give him whatever he may want money wise... but tie every bit of it up in performance clauses.

Only a fool or a team way to loose with cash would do any less....

Dying Breed...

If there is any position on the Miami Dolphins that I feel the team has multiple options... That position on the Defensive Line.

Mike Nolan ran a true 3-4 less then 1/2 the time this past year depending on the team they played. When playing teams like the Jests and Pittsburgh, Miami stacked the box and had as many as 6 guys up front. With Langford, Odrick, Starks, McDaniel, Baker, Merling & Rose on the roster for D-Line. And Starks a pro bowler and Langford leading the line in tackles (Over Soliai, McDaniel & Starks) and McDaniel having a 36 tackle/3 sack season... The D-line would survive losing a player who may be getting one hell of a pay day but who has only shown 1 season that he rates such a deal. I hope he stays... I really do. But if there was ever a player with the potential to burn Miami's ass with a "One year wonder" ... It is Soliai.

Derek = Derek4Dolphins ex blog hot head madman, in the mold of resident psycho bobbyd. Proceed with caution.

Derek, I am with you. Solai has a real potential to burn the fins and destroy the morale of a hard working defense. I can just see a fat Albert situation blooming as soon as he signs a big bonus. The fins need to sign him at a reasonable price. Otherwise they would be wise to let him walk just like the Steelers do when a free agent wants to be over paid (see Porter).

Mac's Blog? That is what you are quoting now? Mando, come on...LOL

Armando, wow.

I see. This is becoming the Soliai blog. I guess not much to do but wait until the draft. CBA and greed will destroy 2011 anyway. Going to be a loooong offseason.

ARMANDO,

I HOPE YOU R GOING TO TALK ABOUT ELIZA KRUGER THE 17 YEAR OLD THAT SANCHEZ HOOKED UO WITH ,YOUR RATING WILL SHOOT UP IF YOU TALK ABOUT IT .

MOST LISTENERS ARE CREEPY,THEY LIKE THAT STUFF .

Haha aloco... well you are the one asking for it, does that make you creepy?

HOHUM.

NO, I AM TRYING TO HELP ARMANDO QUEST FOR GREATNESS . THERE'S ALSO A TON OF QUOTES BY THE GIRL ABOUT SANCHEZ VERY FUNNY .AS THE QUOTE OF HIS HOME WHICH LOOKS LIKE A TRASH DUMP .

Better story out now. Henne was stopped in a parking lot at 3am fondling a naked manikin, apparently stolen from Macy's, while drinking chocolate milk.

I'm with Derek. The D-Line doesn't scare me half as much as the O-Line. Now there's a problem.

But do you give up your only true NT? Soliai should be the last one to let go.

NT & Island Boy Fat Paul knows about chemtrails

Fat Paul and his people of the Island Nation
Are trying to stop the chemtrail aerosol spray program over their sacred homeland island

Often u can see Fat Paul pointing up at the toxic chemtrails that the average American idiot believes is just "smoke" from the jets or "frozen water"

Why the chemtrails go from one end of the sky to the other and then expand into toxic chemclouds is a question the dumbed downed ignorant oblivious slaves cannot answer.

Fat Paul gets very angry seeing the toxic chemtrails sprayed from planes with no normal flight plan whatsoever.
Fat Paul sees the planes making large Xs and grid patterns with toxic Aluminum Oxides & Barium Salts thru aerosol spray nozzles on the wings of the planes

Other than a chempilot or two there are no passengers on these unmarked planes, only large drums of chemicals installed where the passenger seats used to be

Fat Paul knows the chemplanes fly wherever they want because they are in "military airspace" and they answer to no one other than the global evildoers that are running the biggest undercover operation known to this planet.

Who will be the reporter willing to dig deep enuf and unmask the global chemtrail aerosol Armageddon, the biggest conspiracy in the history of the world?

Must See & we can together can stop the chenmtrail aerosol spray program over Miami Dolphin country and every NFL city

Thanks for your support Fat Paul and the rest of the Miami Dolphins on having the guts to unmask the biggest environmental crime in the history of our planet

ATLANTA -- Thousands of Atlanta citizens have united and are standing strong in numbers believing the U.S. government is spreading toxic chemicals from planes. They call them chemtrails and there believe the toxins are damaging the environment and our health.

"It definitely angers me," said Ali Valente of Buckhead. "Some days there's only four [chemtrails] some days there's eight. Some days the whole sky is enveloped in milky white substance."

When Valente began noticing a bunch of white lines in the sky blocking the sun she searched for an explanation online and found a world of truth in regards to the chemtrail aerosol spray program.

I am sure Soliai will do whats best for Soliai....but it may not be what is best for Miami....Somebody said yesterday that we should "trust Nolan's Judgement"......that may well be the best advice the Dolphins can take.....

Nolan above all others (except maybe postion coach) will know wether or not Soliai fits in to what he wants to do with the "D" next year...Nobody but Soliai knows if he is willing to put in the work ethic....all of these questions and doubts are generated by one person...and one person only....the man in Soliai's mirror, and no one else......

Cheap shot at Vernon Carey. If everyone associated to the Dolphins' franchise (including fans, GM, coaches, scouts, AND YOU MANDO) performed to the same level as Carey has over his career, we would have made the playoffs more than once over the past 10 years. he's been an excellent Dolphin and if his play has eroded it's because he's played tough and through many injuries and when he was finally placed in IR last year - he was physically broken.

Have some DAM RESPECT MAN!

Owner's and Player's rep refuse to meet today....

They were scheduled to meet for 5 hrs TODAY......

No meeting.....

Perhaps....and the Billionaires VS. Millionaires...hissy fight continues.....

Yes
But Carey also can be a fat lazy lethargic under performer.
The guy has the talent but does not train hard enough
Many times Carey lets himself go and shows up out of shape or tired
Carey has been blown out and embarrassed many times last year and in previous seasons
However the fat lazy lardass is player with good talent
Believe Armando is right on the Carey assessment but wrong on not uncovering the Chemtrail Aerosol Armageddon in South Florida

Boy I wonder how much Washington regrets that Albert Haynesworth signing LOL

Mark...You blast Marshall at every oppertunity....

Surely you have watched Vernon Carey kill drives all by himself....I know I have.....There are times when he doesn't even seem to be making an effort to run or pass block.....and for me thats what it's all about the effort.....

I think so many people (including myself) are on the Soliai wagon because we saw maximum effort from him this year.....amost every down.....almost every play....and we needed tha from him.....it was a pleasing surprise.....shocking if you will....

I understand to each his own and its your right to NOT be a Marshall fan..and TO BE a Carey fan....

and I am bias...because if you have read any of my post...you already know I am as much against Carey...as you are against Marshall.....

Still...I didn't know he was hurt all year...and I need to take that in to consideration next time I see him completley whiff on a run block....or get torched on a pass play.....

As of now Vernon Carey is bout 30 yrs old, on injured reserve, out of shape and grossly overweight

Lets see whats in store for the overpaid lardass in the 2011 season

After of course we sift through what is left of the New World Order HAARP weapons of mass destruction created and steered severe weather target, the destroyed & decimated country of Australia

Correct me if im wrong... I think our last franchise tag was Marino!! It blows my mind the length of time our incompentency has lasted. And Im afraid we need another ownership change to really get this team tured around. Wow NE Buffalo and ny are going to start pegging us as automatic wins for yrs to come.

Well said Kris

and if u had Chad Henne throwing the ball too far ahead of u,behind u or misfiring all together
U like B-Marsh would be pissed off each and every week

Now 6.6 255 lb QB Cam Newton to B-Marsh

C`Mon Man!

No complaining there

Whats that?

oh

another batted down, too low pass by ... Chad Henne

F!@#ing Loser!

Sign Cam Newton

The rest is conversation

Id like Soliai back, but like some have mentioned on here, it is suspect that the one good year he had was a contract year. The draft is deep on DT's this year and I have a feeling they will draft one regardless of what happens with Soliai.

aloco. chocolate milk does not come from black cows btw.lol

NO NEED HIM. WHO IN THIS LEAGUE OVERPAY HIM?
LET HIM GO!!

Careys play has eroded because he stuffs his disgusting fat body with too much food and wallows around whiffing because he would rather be slouching in his sofa , testing the structural fortitude of said sofa and eating another couple dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts

If you guys got 4 mins to spare and want a laugh...watch the link below on You Tube....I don't know what Dolphin's fan put this together...but its good...and funny...

There you go again (The Gipper)!

Miami LOVES small ball. They're like a Jewish grandmother, haggling at the store. In case no one realized, but our best DE 2 years ago (Randy Stark), kinda mellowed last year (even though he made the ProBowl anyway, probably for what he did in '09). Maybe it has something to do with playing out of position. Like, umm, Jason Allen, who was moved around more than hockey puck, until he eventually got caught as an expert in nothing.

Miami is 19th in player salaries. And, predictably, that's pretty much where we are in the league (maybe a bit better than that). No, you don't need to pay top dollar in this league to get maximum effort, but you need to pay better than 19th (obviously) to make the Playoffs (there were no Playoff teams which paid their players less).

Make it an incentive-laden deal, but just pay the man. He worked hard, lost weight, played his heart out last year, he probably deserves to be in the Top 10 NT's based on that. Plus, it tells other players out there something. It tells them that your name doesn't have to be Marshall or Dansby to get paid. Plus, I never hear about them small-balling an olineman (and frankly, I could have rounded up a bunch of fatties from my neighborhood to play oline for Miami and they would have come dirt cheap compared to what this last group got paid).

I'll wait and see to reserve judgment, I don't mind the FO trying to see if a guy is slippin', but obviously Soliai knows the deal, is looking for a payday, and Miami has loads of dough with which to spend, so I say SPEND IT!

Fat Paul played great last year w a great tude
Give him some money, man
Give him some money

Saw that Hitler parody b4 on the Dolphins Kris

Yes
Is very good

Now what bout those chemtrails in Atlanta CBS news is talking Feb 2011 w sexy young chic outside her high rise condo?

Mark, bad news man, read the afc east section on espn.com. Looks like we're full steam ahead for the worst of all possible choices, a 1st-rd RB (what a joke). They're saying at 15, there's no QB in the draft better than Henne (is there such a thing as a bubble for athletes, because Henne is about to be this year's 'Tulip Mania.'). And they say there's no olineman worth a #15 pick either.

Frankly, if they don't get an olineman or QB, I'd MUCH rather get a Safety, OLB, even a CB over a RB.

They say we'll get a developmental QB in the later rounds (so basically a younger Tyler Thigpen). SO, what I'm saying Mark, is get the knives ready!

I copied and pasted it on google and pressed search

Finally the sheeple are noticing what the Hell is going on in their skies above their big empty dumbed downed and drugged up Humpy Dumpty skulls.

The chic in the video is pretty smart and cool.
She has great pics of the Chemtrails Air Armageddon & Invasion in Atlanta, not far from the Falcons stadium (at least the stadium is indoors)

Like how the media tries to downplay the truth and the fat guy paid by the government saying "what chemtrails LMAO!

Home....I have watched the Chemtrauil videos..and I have seen them outside of my house on a Saturday Morning.....I took pictures on my phone.....I know they exist.....

Just like tje Illuminatti and yes I understand distractions....there is no way the Chem Trails shoudn't be front page news.....

But they won't be....until people demand it......and we won't demand it because peole are scared of pointing out something different....cause you will be called "crazy"...or a "conspricy nut"....

As long as we remain scared...they win.....how "crazy" is that?

Soliai is young.

His performance is trending upwards (2010 best season by far).

He plays a high demand position (far more people looking for big body NTs than there are players to go around.)

The Dolphins have enough gaps to fill on offense without having retool their DLine as well.

Not sure, what the discussion is here. Pull a Vernon Carey and sign the guy.

DC....I woudn't put to much stock in to what the experts predict we will do.....We are guaranteed to do the exact OPPISITE....who predicted Ordick.....nobody was even in te ball park.....

And don't be brain washed into thinking the QBs are no good.....what the heck do they know....

In DEC..the Top 4 QB....witht the exception of Newton...were all day 1 starters.....now after no longer playing...there 5 year projects.....its all for show....nothing more and nothing less....

I trust your judgement as muh as I trust theirs....the difference between you and them is that they get paid....your giving your opinion for free....THATS IT....

No consequences for them when their wrong.....

No consequences for you either....

They are the weather men of sports....

Kris, please apply @ WIKI LEAKS. We need more soldiers with your courage and wisdom.

Some of you do analysis of 1st-rd QB vs. later rounds. Can someone do an analysis of the RB position? My initial investigation shows there are 2 1st-rd picks in the Top 5 RBs of 2010 (Peterson, Johnson). The others are Foster (UNDRAFTED), Hillis (7th rd) and Charles (3rd-rd).

Is anyone saying Ingram is anywhere CLOSE to the caliber of a Peterson or Johnson? Otherwise, what a waste of a pick (in a long line of wasted picks by Miami) at 15.

hey its not my money. Pay them all I say.

kris, I'm hoping against hope Ireland isn't listening to "the experts", but I'm getting worried when all I see is us picking Ingram. I might bite my tongue off and eat it with chicken livers and fava beans if that happens.

DC...lol.....don't worry...we are guaranteed to pck a D-lineman from East bumf*k state....that nobody has hear of.....

Ingram is safe.....

I`m sick of the chemtrails over Dolphin stadium in Miami!

How come the Miami Herald has done nothing on this issue and posted no pictures when we are getting sprayed with these toxic chemtrails almost everyday!

Finally, understand why this plan will succeed. The vast majority of people on the planet are unaware of what’s happening simply because: (1) they have been conditioned to believe that what they see in the sky is normal; (2) they aren’t told by the TV news that it is not normal and, in fact, the chemtrails are highly toxic. If it’s not reported on the news, it’s not real.

Last week, a TV segment on chemtrails was presented on a CBS affiliate out of Atlanta. Although the story was presented as a conspiracy theory, TV news reporter Jeff Chirico issued the following invitation at the end of the segment: “Now, we know that a lot of you have pictures and videos of chemtrails. We want to see them. So, send them to us at: pics@cbsatlanta.com. We’ll post them on our website.”

Boulder the only problem with the "pay the man" philosophy is the cap...

and we have to be cautious when were we put our money.....

Miami Dolphins In Depth

"Cornerback Will Allen recently restructured his contract, which should allow the 10-year veteran to continue playing for the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins planned to release Allen, who missed all of 2010 when the team placed him on injured reserve following a knee scope he underwent in the exhibition season, but Allen's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, got the Dolphins to rework his contract.

Terms of the deal weren't available, but it's expected to be more team-friendly than his old contract.

"We were able to do something we thought was fair to both sides," Rosenhaus told WQAM Thursday morning.

Text alerts: Get Miami Dolphins news on your phone

Allen was due $5.5 million in 2011, which was the final year of an extension he signed in 2009. The only players on the Dolphins roster due more in base salary next season are receiver Brandon Marshall, who is slated to make $6.5 million, and Pro Bowl left tackle Jake Long, who is expected to make nearly $11 million.

Allen, who started 54 straight games for the Dolphins, now gets to continue his role as mentor to Vontae Davis and Sean Smith, who started the majority of the past two seasons as the Dolphins' boundary cornerbacks.

Allen, who has started all but one of the 125 NFL games he's played, intends to compete with Davis and Smith for a starting spot. However, it's more realistic that this 32 year old will battle Benny Sapp for the nickel spot in the Dolphins nickel and dime defensive packages." O.K.

WHY WAS ARMANDO NOT FIRST ON THE CHEMTRAIL NEWS?

Chemtrails CBS Atlanta 2/2/2011 on YOU TUBE!

Is Ingram all that bad? I understand he isn't a break away speed back, but isn't it best to have one of each? One speed guy and one tough power runner? So IF he is BPA, why not take him? Ronnie or Rickie isn't going to provide much if either is back, so we desperately need a serious rb, at least one! Can always look for a speed back in FA or heck, so you address that next year. No way to fill 12 slots with 7 picks. Can't do what you can't do. I can't say I am the biggest Ingram fan, but looking ahead, may very well be a good idea to have someone like that in the backfield the next 10 years. When trying to preserve a 4th qtr lead and eat up the clock, when you are trying to grind out one more first down to keep the ball away from the d in the final minutes, a power back is quite valuable, and arguably more durable than the smaller speedy guys.
