What they do, not say: Pass-rush edition

First the news: ILB Rashad Jeanty signed a contract today with the Philadelphia Eagles. He went with the Eagles even though the Dolphins and the Jets also offered him similar one-year deals.

The reason the South Florida native went north?

A source tells me he was simply more comfortable with the situation in Philadelphia over that with the Dolphins and Jets. He felt he had a better chance to start there than in Miami or New York.

On another front:

If you are a Dolphins In Depth reader with any standing or memory, you know I've told you to be wary of what the club and its personnel say but always accept what those folks do as gospel.

We remember this lesson from the Gibril Wilson lovefest of last offseason that led to his departure. We learned it when Cam Cameron loved on Daunte Culpepper publicly while I told you the kid was on the outs -- and months later he was cut. We learned this when Dave Wannstedt went on and on about how valuable Dan Marino was and how he could write his own ticket in the waning years of his career and, meanwhile, the Dolphins had him come to their offices to void his contract and usher him out.

It is not always about what they say. It is about what they do.

Well, the Dolphins last year where seemingly thrilled with Cameron Wake exploding onto the NFL scene with 14 sacks. They repeated time and again how pleased they were with rookie Koa Misi's development as a pass-rusher even though he showed good-not-great ability and good-not-great results with 4.5 sacks.

(For the record, I think Misi will be fine as a pass-rusher. He's more an effort guy, a high-motor guy. He's not the most gifted guy on the field, but he'll get his stats because he never quits and works hard. And he'll probably be a bit better when he learns the game and techniques better.)

So the Dolphins seemed quite pleased with their pass-rush and obviously the 39 team sacks for the season was good enough to tie them for 10th in the NFL.

But ...

While the Dolphins seemed satisfied in what they said about their pass-rush, their deeds yelled otherwise.

Even as many folks were hoping GM Jeff Ireland would improve the offense during the season any way he could -- perhaps putting in a waiver claim on Randy Moss -- he instead went with a waiver claim on outside linebacker Shawne Merriman when San Diego cut him loose.

Obviously, Ireland and the Dolphins saw a need to improve the pass rush at the time even as Wake was going nuts on offensive tackles.

Recently, The Miami Herald reported, the club interviewed former linebacker Bryan Cox for a defensive line coaching position. Although the club has yet to finalize anything on that front, a club source says part of the intrigue with Cox would be getting him to 1.) help defenders upgrade their pass-rush skills 2.) bring a more aggressive and perhaps even emotional approach to the front seven.

So, again, pass-rushing is on the club's mind.

What does that mean?

Obviously, the team is not afraid of improving an area of the team that is already fairly stout. It's a good idea because, after all, the New York Giants long ago wrote the recipe for defeating Tom Brady and the Patriots and that was hurry him, rush him, sack him, and hit him time after time.

This also suggests we should not lose sight of available pass-rushers in the coming draft and eventual free agency. I won't go into names here. It's too early for that. Or you can do it in the comments section. But, I tell you, do not sleep on additions to the pass-rush this offseason even as everyone is focused on offense.

Sure, the Dolphins haven't said they want to add a pass-rusher. But remember, it's about what they do, not necessarily what they say.

[NOTE: This will be the last blog update until Feb. 28. The Miami Herald, you see, imposes mandatory furloughs on its employees to reduce salary costs. It does so twice a year, lately. I am on mandatory furlough this week so I will not be working for The Herald thus not allowed to update this blog.

That doesn't mean I'm off this week. I will still be on my morning radio show, Armando and the Amigo, every morning 6-10 from Monday to Friday on 640-Sports in South Florida and streaming live on the web. If anything Dolphins related happens, you can bet I'll be discussing it on the air and taking calls about it, too. So you can tune in or call, if you wish.

I will also be live on my twitter account which is under my name. Please follow me to get my tweets. Later this week I will be sharing information on the NFL scouting combine. I'll hope to be back here with you on Feb. 28.]

STORY

Beerphin and Dying Breed,

LeShoure played against lesser defenses no doubt. Still, I don't think it's necessarily accurate to hold that against him.

He's definitely an intriguing prospect. People saying he'll never be more than a backup are just taking shots in the dark.

I'm sure nobody expected that guy in San Diego to come on like he did. What is that guys name?

Anyway, LeShoure reminds me of that kind of guy.

LeShoure is a known slurper. Will never bond with hte lockerroom unless the team has a few gay players.

I have ALWAYS posted with my real name, not only here, but in Blogs with somewhat more serious content, and here I am. NOBODY can harm you in the Real World for posting your opinions in Virtual Space. After all, they are only opinions.

seriously, this is the weakest draft in decades. stop trying to elevate players way above their abilities. this draft stinks.

Aloco,

I drink Budweiser, ALOT!!!!(spoken in the voice of the guy from Idiocrasy).

Are you saying I need a beating? DAMN! Rough crowd.

My friend told me about a Heineken Mini Keg sale at Big K(of all places). I "invested" in 16 mini kegs. I even tried to buy the display rack. They wouldn't let me.

Anywho, I've already drank 4 of those mini kegs. I love Heineken, it taste great even at room temperature.

It's truly Viking beer, it's brewed in Holland!!!!

Heineken! Heineken! Heineken! Heineken!

DB,

I've read the last 4 pages and everybodies posts, including like, all hundred of yours. For somebody who claimed to leave until draft, you have come back with a vengence, and a overtly swollen attitude. You couldn't pick a straw from a haybale if your life depended on it.

You are all over runt Hunter one post, and then back to Ingram, then eye-balling the microscope over any other mock pick we here suggest.

What - LOL - gets me is, you spend the luxury of adding FA, and trading picks to justify your adle-brained selection of players.

Sorry, but you are not the Owner, GM, but just a simple lazyboy recliner (rocking chair?) gurru. Nothing more, nothing less.

Ps. I looked at the Youtube link you posted (pg. 17) regarding Hunters highlights. 3 min 39 secs. of a total of 5 runs. Did you not notice all 5 runs were filmed at 3 different angles? And yes, for the sake of reel time, they speeded up the film on several dashes for either time factor, or for effects. Likely effects. WOW!

And as you said in an earlier post - maybe your fiftieth at that point - you said that LeShoure might look good at the college ranks, but the NFL is far more potent (a universal understanding; absolutely no enlightenment there dude), but that situation applies to every single player, in every single draft.

Hunter, does not escape this same threshold... I really like how you justfied his runt stature by claiming he is so small that he would get lost amid a ton of killers in the trenches, and run for glory. What's he gonna do, run beneath their legs?
He's gonna get slaughtered, and you wont need a microscope to see that coming.
He-he
You ain't tryin' to work with anybody.

I prefer German beer, odin, you know, less stink...

Beerphins/odinseye,

Ive never seen LeShoure play. If by some chance he ends up a dolphin I know we all can only hope he's the real deal.

If drafted by us I would support him as I would any dolphin player. But we all know how this fan base is when any highly drafted player turns average or less.

To tell you the truth I really dont mind who draft if the guy turns out to be a gem. All any of wants is a winner!

heineken is too sweet. the best beers come from belgium and germany. Pilsner Urquel -Czech - is also awesome. Heine's are for hineys.

HEINEKIN .......BEST BEER BY FAR .

BUDWISER
MILLER LIGHT
BUD LIGHT...............FOR THE CHEAP HOMELESS.

While in Manhattan, somebody recommended the "Silver Bullet". I tried it and marveled at the justness of the advertising, it sure tasted like water to me.

Hunterwould be before Harper but I'd like to see DeAngelo Williams or Bradshaw with Ronnie being the spell

I NOTICE MEN DRING BUDWISER AND MILLER LIGHT THEY NEVER HAVE A NICE HAIR CUT BUT PEOPLE DRINK GERMAN OT DUTCH BEER THEY ALWAYS HAVE A NICE HAIR CUT W=EVERY FEW WEEKS .

Marooned...any hot easy young gals out that way?

Marooned on a Deserted Island@ 10:44 PM.

Absolute genius post and give the honors of post of the year to you sir!

"Sorry, but you are not the Owner, GM, but just a simple lazyboy recliner (rocking chair?) gurru. Nothing more, nothing less."

This couldnt have been articulated any better. Dude your entire post had me rotflmao because so much of it was so true! LOL............

ALoco..It is sad that Bud Light(for that matter any light beer) is the biggest seller by case in this country. In my little bar we sell between 80 cases(on a busy 2 weeks) to 60 cases(normal order)..For my money the best beers are brewed in California. Steelhead extra dry pale ale being the best. For imports, Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale, or Taddy Porter are my favorites.

DD.

I BELIVE WHEN YOU SAY BUD LIGHT IS THE BIGGEST SELLER FOR IT'S THE CHEAPEST PPER ON EARTH TO SATSFY THE MINERS WHO COME TO YOUR PLACE AND ENJOY YOUR BEAUTIFUL FOOD .

THE CHEAPEST BEER ON EARTH

I am quite sure that all GM's have exactly the same information about players. Then, how do we explain that some(GM's) are more successful than others? Just saying..

NO ONE CAN DENY THAT OSCAR HAS A TALENT FOR PSTING WITH LEAST WORDS AND BIGGEST EFFECT .

Once, I felt a strong need for bubblegum, and I ordered a Bud Light.

oscar..I'll tell you the secret. LUCK. period. It's a matter of the team needs and whats available at the time. Every single season every single team misses on picks....it isn't an art, its voodoo.

DB,

I think "desert" was looking for a different response. People get mad when you find their antagonisms humorous. NICE!

The rocking chairs are overated. I got a chase lounger(?)w/built in dual recliners.

I do my lazy a s s arm chair general managing in style.

PS: Just for the record, I personally rate Ingram SLIGHTLY ahead of LeShoure. But, it's like you said, whoever they draft I'll root for and pray they end up rookie of the year. OL, ILB, WR, QB, whoever it is, they'll be a Dolphin so I'll be a fan!

odinseye,

If desert was looking to antogonize me he's a little late. Seems the older I get the more broken my "react" button becomes. LOL...........

Yeah, DB, the Virtue of Patience is acquired...

marooned obviously has impotency problems.

Flying Dog!

I drank some Flying Dog Ale last week, it was awesome!

It's made in Maryland with imported German ingrdients.

If you want to grow some hair on your arse or punch your boss in the face-Drink some Flying Dog Ale!!!!

Ye-HaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaW!!!!

Oswaldo,
No, nothing pretty washed ashore with me. Just an ugly gal. Some might say she's a double bagger.
I do not have any grocery bags, so I use a coconut...
DB, I see you can take a joke.
No harm intended.

odin what if i just want to boink my neighbors daughter?

Night Train....It's a mean wine! J. Blues....

That would be my suggestion Zilo.

Oswaldo,
I have 4 kids aged 9 to 21. If I catch you near any of them I will sic the dog on you. You are perverted.

Odin, guys! Drink whatever beer you want! Then drink Yuenling Lager! The oldest American beer! It is still family owned, check it out, it is a great beer! Made in the USA, since the 1800's.

Talking about the Oscars(how about that, they picked my name for that!), the only good movie I've been able to see is The Social Network. It is the story of Mark Zuckerberg, a little Jew boy with a computer for a Mind and a wringer for a Soul, who founded Facebook. Well worth watching.

Tire Bite Golden Ale brought to you by The Flying Dog Breweries.

If you're a true connoisseur, you'll find a way!

Authentic German Ingredients put together with good ole American Craftsmanship and know how.

How could it be any better?

(Wow, you'd think I own stock in the Brewery or something)

I should be writing add campaigns. I guess when you believe in a product, the adds practically write themselves!!!!

ValHalla Mutha Forkers!!!!

PS: Armando, get a haircut.

Jeffy, please don't "Interview" any of the Blue Chip Prospects at the combine.

Tony, add the middle finger to your fist pump and point it at Ross's luxury box every chance you get this season.

Chad Henne, go beat up a Nun or something. Find your mean streak and bring it too the game this season!

I've been typing one handed for awhile now and it sucks when you don't have your joystick in the other hand.

Nosiree! I broke it punching Debo in the head. That's one tough PitBull, I'm telling you boy. He didn't even blink.

Of course I cut my cast off early because my Stratocaster kept taunting me.

Lord have mercy. If it wasn't for Heinekens and Vicodins I don't know what I'd do.

Bottoms Up!!!!

Howdy Fellas,

Just catching up on all the blog reading...

cocoajoe @ 5:28 -

How right you are bro. You brought up a good point. I was a bigtime TE Jimmy Graham fan and wanted him as my 2010 pre draft mock archives would attest. The fact that we are now paying/thinking of paying a 30 year old TE with a track record of inury major $$ when we could have had a serious athletic TE that we needed in the 3rd... tisk tisk.

DB @ 6:52

Jahvid Best had not one but two turf toes. Some guys don't play with one and he fought hard all year to stay on the field. Even with the injuries he still gashed our Fins for a long TD. He was my choice as a 1st rounder last year. We went BIG, TOUGH GUY Odrick as the big guys never get hurt...Ooops, never mind. Best will be better next year and Detroit is already my darkhorse choice next (if there is a next year).

FYI to DD, 0X80 and whoever... from 8:30 to 8:36 it wa an imposter you were talking to. Aloco and I go back a ways and he knows I NEVER beat up on him. He's a friend on the blog here. Notice they are short posts as I get busted all the time about being too long.

It sux as I try not to bash anyone and let others have their own opinions including the "others" that join the board. I guess it was bound to happen but, I had never had an impersonator up to that point.

Darryl Dunphy @ 8:34

Thanks for the props on TE Julius Thomas bud! He has a certain poor mans Gates feel to him and is extra similar with the basketball background. Because of his limited playtime background and smaller school he may not go in the 4th but I would be suprised if he didn't go before the early sixth round (5th most likely). Natural pass catching player at TE that looks the part.

Cheers,

If speed is what they want then they shouldf draft Ricardo Lockette in the 7th rd. He is the 100m national champ and totally unheard of cuz he droped out of school to train but he should be running at the combine and is probably going to break records. 6'2 207 looks like he could be a great return specialist

Lockette supposedly already ran a 4.3 it'll be interesting to see how he does at the combine

I had read about it, of course. But my first job in the Health field was as a phlebotomist at Miami Heart Center in Miami Beach. Soon, they appeared, indelible the n u m b e r s God

Trust me, we would have a VERY hot time together. You'd be bucking your hips and groaning in ecstasy.

I bet most of you guys are pretty flabby and gross, though.

Shock first and some time after that, indignation; then depression, and finally, the realization that we are and will forever be Animals.

I realized that the first time I bent over, and I'm good with it now.

Good, to the other oscar canosa. By the way, how many oscar canosas are in this World? I thought I was the only one. Does not matter, we can learn from each other(except the bending over, at least from this oscar canosa).

Stop me if you heard this before........

A Impact NFL player walks in to the Miami training facility with EVERY INTENTION of either signing with or being drafted by the Miami Dolphins.....It just so happens that these players are not only WANTS....but they fill even GREATER NEEDS......

After taling to and being insulted by our GM and FO personnel they leave Miami feeling insulted and under valued and move on next season to either have a break out rookie year....or be a key peice in a SB run.......

Does that sound familiar to anybody......

The speed deficiency is transparent. It is needed to shatter the celing that bedevils franchise Miami, division AFC East.

Recall the origins in the REBEL LEAGUE with Bedouin tribesman JOE ROBBIE setting forth on desert plain a NEW VISION forged in sentient and experimental times.

Brought forth a CONCEPT team of men gathered in a UNITED PURPPOSE to scissor and hacksaw through the mealy bread and cookies of the old NFL with valor and purpose.

Zum Zum was the food product in the Orange Bowl as the elders gathered to witness. Empty suitcase pigeons flew off in terror from their previously unoccupied perches now filled with chasms of noise crescendo up and down echo across to Little Havana and onwards to Coral Gables and Sea Monkey Estates waves of aqua, waves of aqua, waves of aqua unrelenting.

ireland missed on alot of talent in last years draft. he passed on safety earl thomas and dez bryant in the 1st to grab a guy with a broken leg(odrick);also missed on tight ends gronkowski and hernandez etc. we coulda used brandon tate or a mike williams outta syracuse who the bucs scooped up. ireland drafts acorns;nothing more.

I;m not even going to go into the past years mistakes....lets look at the last 6 months......

Pass on R. Moss.....which I agreed with (after all he's a FA this year...sign him then)

Put a claim in for Shawn (I CAN ONLY STAY HEALTHY ON THE JUICE) Merrimen...he lasted what 3 plays in his 1st practice in BUF.....

Entered the 2011 season with a back up QB who gets HURT on his 2nd play from scrimmage.....what doctors are evaluating this guy......can he/sh read an MRI???????

Ordick....nuff said!!!!!!

Our medical staff should be put under the microscope....it takes more than 53 to win A GAME IN THE NFL.....

It takes the COACHES, FO, TRAINERS, DOCTORS, EQUIPMENT PERSONNEL, ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE DUDE HE SPAYS THE GATORADE IN THEIR MOUTHS during Time outs to all be competent, and on the same page.....

How can this medical staff be SO WRONG..SO MANY TIMES.....

pass on brees
bring in culpepper
sign ofF on rookie with broken leg (#1 PICK)
Allow Chap P, to collect pay check wuth spaghetti holding his shoulder in place....

Do you guys really question why were 7-9?

I do.....No RB....No QB.....No O-line.....I don't know how we didn't repeat 1-15.......

Maybe Coach Tony CAN COACH........

Sullyfins...from yesterday P. 19......

I disagree with your assesment of Sanchez to this point....and your hate for the jets seems to greatly slant your view of what they have....

we can only deal in facts...not what if's....

The fact is sanchez QB'd his team TWO times to TWO CONSECUTIVE AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES.....stats be damed...its all about winning......i would give Henne a reach around for a play-off win......

sanchez plays well when they take the leash off of him.....he ACTUALLY LED GAME TYING OR GAME WINNING DRIVES ....

To us Dolphins fans those words are sound strange...because we Henne or any other QB in a FINS uniform looked like one half of Laurel and Hardy every time we were in a 2-min situation.....

But more to my point.....and I have posted it many times.....

I don't give a DAM what kiper/mayock/lombardy/(insert whoever calls themslves a TV expert)........says......whatever they THINK they know....shoudn't be like a candle compared to the SUN in terms of what NFL GM's know.....a COMPETENT NFL GM........

I'll use sanchez again.....played one season surrounded by talent at USC.....none of them saw him having this much success so early....BUT THE JET GM DID....

FLACCO.....small school out of Deleware......passed on by 17 teams.....finds his way to Baltiore and has gone to the playoffs 3 staight years and has 4 play off wins.....

Aron Rodgers...drafted 24th.......

Drew brees falls to the 2nd round.....

I'm quite sure we passed on all of these guys (except sanchez(.....and we have need a QB for all of those years.....even when Feidler was winning....WE NEEDED A FRANCHISE QB!

My point.....do your homework GM's.....because one if not 2 of the big 4 QBs will be there.....they always are......

GREG Z HAS A GREAT POINTRE IRELAND MISSING GOOD PLAYERS IN THE LAST YEAR DRAFT.WHAT IF WE DRAFT MARK INGRAM AND THEN HIS LAST KNEE INJURY APPERS AGAIN AND OUR DUMB DOCTORS MISS IT LIKE THEY MISSED ODRICK LEG INJURY .

POINT RE IRELAND.

KRIS... GOOD DAY TO YOU .
DO YOU THINK A NICE POST LIKE THE ONE YOU WROTE @ 8;02 DESERVE A BETTER TIME POSTING IT ? IT'S 8;00 AM AND MOST PEOPLE STILL A SLEEP AFTER DRINKING THE BUDWISER AND THE MILLER LIGHT .

Sullyfins....just to bring the point a little closer to home...DAN MARINO.....LAST QB TO BE TAKEN IN 1ST RD......LAST ONE.....

So you don't have to get the "expert opinion" #1.....teams just need to get the guy the want.....

THE DOLPHINS WILL NOT SIGN SHOKEY ,REMEMBER THE SAINTS COACH IS CLOSE FRIEND OF SPARANO .

SHOKEY WILL SIGN WITH PANTHERS AND REUNITE WITH HIS EX COACH ROB CHUDINZKI AT THE UM PLUS HE WILL HAVE MORE OF A ROLE THERE THAN HERE IN MIAMI.

Mr. Aloco.....

I understand your point about the posting time and people being asleep....hopefully they will wake up to a nice read and perhaps agree or diagree on a few points I tried to make.......maybe I will re-post later if necessary......

With Armando being off there really isn't a set schedule this week....except for you, DB, DD, and a few other nigh owls after 11 pm.....much to late for me....i need my beauty sleep...lol

Good morning to you sir!

PAUL SOLIAI HAS SIGNED THE OFFER BY DOLPHINS FOR 12.5 MILLION FOR A YEAR.BECOMES HIGHEST PAID PLAYER ON THE TEAM AFTER B.MARSHALL.

P.S......HENNE STILL HAVE THE SPOT FOR THE LOWEST PAID FOOTBALL PLAYER ON EARTH.

lol @ Aloco @ 8:20.....thats too funny.......

The Miami Dolphins are really developing a strange history. Look at the last decade. Even with the owner going after the 'supposedly' best coaches available, each time it ended in failure.

JJ - was wanting to quit before he even got his shoes tied. Huizenga had to beg him to stay on.

Wanny - took handoff from JJ and fumbled. Ran Ricky left, right and up the middle 19,438 times, passed twice, resigned mid season.

Saban - cracked when wasn't deliverd the right brand of cupcakes in his office. Blatantly lied about his intentions and quit.

Cam - Fell fast backward. I guess maybe his plan worked, the team could only go forward from there.

Parcells - Took over all football operations, yet never communicated a word to the media or the fans once he started. Remained in hiding his whole tenure. Expected players to accept contract terms on the spot that were scribbled on post-it notes. Was long gone before anyone even realized it.

2011 - lets face it, its a wash year for Sparano. Further compounded by the cba which won't get settled until right before the season should start, the team really has even less of a chance than they normally would. Prediction, Sparano's fate will be sealed by Thanksgiving.

Bold suggestion - why waste this years picks on a lame duck season and a lame duck coach? It isn't even one of the better drafts. Trade ALL picks for picks next year. Let the new regime get off to a solid running start with plenty of picks and all the new cba rules straightened out ahead of time.

0x80.....good post and a quick recap that any Dolphin fan can quicly read and understand.....

I fear your right about Sparano....but the fan in me won't let me admit defeat.....i get more optimistic with each passing day....
