Did Ingram kill himself by running slow? No Did it help? No

The Dolphins are in the market for a running back in the NFL draft.

The Dolphins are also in the market for speed on offense and the NFL draft is expected to deliver that as well.

So it stands to reason if general manager Jeff Ireland can find a running back who is fast, he can meet two needs for the price of one pick. That's the reason Alabama running back Mark Ingram was such a popular guess as the Dolphins first round pick (15th overall) according to many draft gurus with opinions. The marriage just seemed to fit.

And then Ingram ran the 40-yard dash as the NFL Combine on Sunday. And his time was a pedestrian 4.62 in one clocking, which raised some red flags and eyebrows because, well, it's never great news when a smallish back cannot run away from bigger defenders.

So is Ingram, the 2009 Heisman Tropy winner from Alabama, thus eliminated from Miami's list of possible draft day targets?

Former NFL defensive back Corey Chavous, a draft guru in his own right and founder of nfldraftnasty.com, doesn't think so. In fact, Chavous now thinks Ingram has joined some very good company.

"A lot of running backs that are the greatest of all time that haven't had the greatest of 40 times," Chavous said today on my radio show, Armando and the Amigo. "Emmitt Smith ran high 4.5s and low 4.6s. Walter Payton was also 4.5 type guy. And that's kind of what [Ingram] has got to be compared to now if you're saying he's going to be an elite running back. You look at some of the better running backs that have played with that same build and stature that haven't had great 40-yard dash times."

You can listen to the complete Armando and the Amigo interview yourself on the podcast right here. Chavous also discusses the quarterback that most impressed him during the combine.

One thing that Chavous did point out is that Ingram was not supposed to run slow. It was indeed a surprise -- obviously not a pleasant one.

"I was surprised because Ingram ran 10.7 in the 100 meters in high school so him running a 4.6 surprised me," Chavous said. "It seems he got into a stride too early and didn't stay in his explosion phase long enough."

That suggests Ingram can rehabilitate that time when he has a pro day at Alabama or a personal workout for various teams -- including the Dolphins. But even then, the 40-time is not a tolling bell of doom.

I do repeat, it is a red flag. Remember that Ingram spent parts of the 2010 season battling injury concerns. So teams will want to know if the 40 time is an outgrowth of lingering injury issues.

But will it erase him from Miami's radar? Probably not.

My take? I personally believe the Dolphins are in trade down mode already. I believe they want to add a second round pick and the only real way to accomplish that is trade out of No. 15 to lower in the first round and add a low second rounder to boot.

But you obviously need a partner to participate in that scenario. Barring that scenario presenting itself, the Dolphins will obviously still consider Ingram -- although it is hardly a certainty they will take him.

Aloco...I don't see MSFT out of this country, simply for security reasons. HP who knows. Its far cheaper building plants and facilites abroad. One thing I will say, from years of personal experience...yes the Indians and Chinese are very well educated, they are hard workers, and most of the ones I worked with were really cool people. On the other hand, I have just found the Americans to be the more efficient workers, the more urgent workers, more productive, and the more imaginative workers. I don't say that to offend anyone, I respect everybody. But my observation, having lived in 4 different countries, worked in 3 different countries, is that Americans are still the more innovative, free thinking bunch. The culture in the US seems to breed something that I didn't see in the Europeans or Asians. Yes that may sound racist, but I assure you I am not racist in anyway and respect everyone equally.

I know it's a longshot, but if Julio Jones is there at #15, the Fins should take him. Did you see what he did at the Combine? http://bit.ly/RiseFallNFL

Rob...neither you or I can really know Ingrams time. We are obviously both reading from different sources.

Assuming we have to pick at 15, of the players that are likely to be available, who would you choose?

You guys should all go back and read 0x80's post at 10:53pm SLOWLY. A lot of REALLY good points brought up by him. I just don't get why some of you would take the risk of not improving our running game by taking a back early on. YOu criticizie this regime left, right and centre for making bonehead moves and yet one of the most glaring voids on our team you want to fix by hoping you stumble on an Arian Foster. I got news for most of you guys for Foster that's out there there is way more Parmallees or some of the other clowns we've drafted in the fourth round on.

bill, its more retarded leaving your team with no starting rb...you want to risk taking whatever leftover junk there is in round 3 or 4, fine...just don't complain later.

AGREE 100 PERCENT 0X80......GOD BLESS THE US .SOME HOW ALL THESE COOL IDEAS LIKE TWITTER AND FACE BOOK CAME FROM AVERAGE AMERICAN STUDENTS NOT VREY SMART MATH OR SIENCE STUDENTS .

ANOTHER QUESTION,,,, IF YOU HAVE THE POWER TO HIRE ONE LAST GUY TO WORK FOR YOU ,WHO WOULD YOU HIRE ,THE CUBAN OR OSCAR ?

I'm going to listen to you, Bill? Like I listened to you when you said Sparano and Ireland were gone? When you told me that Cowher was coming? Or when you told me Harbaugh was coming? Or that Henne would never start another game in this league?

There's others but I'm forgetting them all now...

odinseye,

Make a run at Young since he has intangibles and some mileage left and/or a QB like Stanzi, though a first round pick might be high for him. My point is to be pro active and challenge the status quo until we find the answer and stop thinking other positions will make up for a crappy and dull QB.

0x80 @ 10:53

As for his 10 split time of 1.53 that was nice. The way you describe it seems turned around in my head. If you have a good split time your burst means you start fast. That is from the handoff spot or in the open field from a standstill. The fact that he tops out at a slower top end speed which accounts for his more pedestrian 4.62 means he will get caught or run down by defenders in open field.

Said another way... getting the "extra yards" you spoke of in open field has more to do with top end speed than burst as he would already be up to speed imho.

What I know abut Ronnie Brown is this. He can block and does a pretty good job. I think his "loss of speed" has more to do with lack of holes and 8 man fronts vs the Wildcat than his being so much slower.

I believe (this answer goes out to Craig M as well that is always asking for specific plans) we will be just fine on those 12.5 carries a game at RB by resigning Ronnie to a lesser contract. Also improving his OL blocking, schemes and play calling can be huge as well. All of which should be new and different as there is new DC.

I think the rumors of Ronnies demise has as much to do with the overall OFF woes as his personal falling off or losing a step.

I would take RB Ronnie Brown in a second racing head to head vs Mark Ingram. That is with the extra 12-17 lbs, injuries, wear and tear etc.

Cheers,

Here's Bill coming on to take the wind out of everyone's sails again.....doom and gloom!!

Last I checked we haven't lost a game since the Patriots game, Bill. That was a long time ago. Get over it man!

And it has NOTHING to do with me thinking I'm a better fan than you. You can do or say what you want. But I'm here to enjoy life Bill and part of that is to cheer for my beloved Dolphins. As I told a couple guys today, I don't let Jet or Patriot fans tear my team down and I won't take it from guys like you either. If you want to butt heads with me over this stuff, I'm game!

never said harbaugh. did say they were gone and cowher was comin. cowher wanted job, but retarded ross wouldnt fire ireland. i underestimated how dumb ross was. and i predicted exactly what their record was last season while u kept hyping them up as some great team. and im sticking to my guns that henne wont start again. im guessing at some opoint before the 2012 season they will realize there only chance to save their jobs is to get rid of garbage henne

Ok,

Lets take Mikel LeShoure 1st rd. Even if it's at #15. "IF" we get a 2nd rd pick, lets take Ponder.

3rd rd lets grab one of these not so great olinemen left around. Rd's 4-7 let's piss in a leaky bucket and call it a golden shower.

im guessing ronnie and ricky are gone. id take palmer over young. but palmer would cost us something

THE NEW GANG OF DEFEAT MEMBERS;;

1- BILL OCONRS
2-ROB IN OC

hilarious, craig we havent played a game since then. your starting to sound like a royals fan when they say "we didnt lose today!, course we didnt play today either"

i guess craig u dont get it. we arent tearing down or in your case hyping up this team. we are suppose to be talking reality about the fins here, and think most anyone can agree its not very good right now.

0x80,

No, the NFL "official" times were very well documented and covered bit during the regular coverage as well as on many websites.

It's 4.62 in the 40...OFFICIAL as it gets.

You can ask other bloggers though, don't just take my word for it.

The part about you losing the race on different days to the other kid when you guys were both about the same speed is a better arguement. He could have had an off day.

Maybe he continues to keep super dieting, training like a track star, and get down to 207 lbs and put up a 4.57 at his pro day.

Would that be better? Different day...also different circumstances.

Cheers,

I REMEMBER BILL WAS SAYING TONY IS GONE AND COWHER THE HEYNA IS COMING ,HAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HA HA

yup aloco, dont u wish ross would of just fired his friend ireland and hired cowher. think of how different the mood would be right now in here. everyone would be pumped for 2012

yes rob it was 4.62, that is painfully slow.

huge win for players with the judge ruling the owners cant take the money from the tv contracts today

THE HEYNA WOULD COME AND GRAP ROSS'S MONEY AND RUN , NO THANKS

Rob in OC,

That's a pretty bold statement to say you would take a 29 year old Ronnie Brown, who has suffered some serious injuries over a 21 year old Mark Ingram. I'm sure you're well aware of that magic number of 30 where running backs typically hit a wall. I believe that is what's happened to LT, despite a strong first half to last season. It's what happened to Shaun Alexander and others.

My question is then, at what point do we look to find a younger replacement? If not this year, then when? And what happens if Brown, who I think showed very little last year, with not a single 100 yard rushing day, falls on his face this year. How does that help Henne or whoever is playing QB.

It's been since 2005 that we used a high pick on a running back. I think it's high time we took one in the top three rounds this year.

i wouldnt want ronnie over ingram if i had to choose one. lets hope we dont have to have either one

stop thinking other positions will make up for a crappy and dull QB.

Posted by: TC | March 01, 2011 at 11:10 PM

Well OK. One question though. What makes you think VY and Stanzi aren't crappy and dull? One just got ran out of town because he's a basket case fading fast and the other has never taken an NFL snap. Dooh!

I'm not defending in the least, but ah, your plan ain't the best I've heard either.

R.BROWN HAS MADE 70 MILLION PLAYING FOR FINS.WITH TOTAL OF 2 YEARS INJURED DURING HIS TIME WITH DOLPHINS .

true though, it all starts at qb and we dont have one right now

Rob, we can debate it for hours but only time will tell.... If you watch how Ingram runs, patient, lets the blocking set up, finds the creases, than 10 burst has him behind the dline...yeah he can get caught, but I can see him racking up lots of yards. Lots of 4 - 10 yard gains. I can see him eating up the clock, and I can see him wearing down defenses in the 4th quarter. My friend, I can not agree with you on Ronnie, he never lived up to the expectations, he ain't going to start now. Lucky if he stays healthy half the season as well.

WE DON'T A MISSILE TO RUN,WE NEED A SMART RB WHO HAS PATIENT TO FIND THE HOLES .

brown has made around 38 mill in his career

Rob...sounds to me more like you are eager to believe the worst than to consider everything. Big deal, one 40 time means squat, I know that. Nobody who runs a 4.5 is going to run that 10 times in a row.

You know what? I seriously don't think we will pick Ingram anyway. Whether we trade down or not, Ireland seems bent on doing the unexpected. One way or the other, we will see how Ingram turns out...and let's bet a beer on it.

Every Large Corp. would leave the US if the Tax Breaks aren't right and...if they could do so without suffering Consumer Backlash.

That's just part of Capitalism.

Yazzi.. that Microsoft threat was only to avert the government trying to break them up. Microsoft is a major security matter...no way they are leaving the country, they are a rare exception.

HENNE MADE 344 DOLLARS PLAYING FOR THE FINS .

MSFT WILL NEVR LEAVE THE COUNTRY,AGREE

Aloco,

Dissapointed in you man. You and I are kewl with each other except when I disagree with you?

Whats that about? Tisk tisk...

I will gladly join your gang of defeat club (ALL CAPS OF COURSE)!!!!

I am not going to be bullied, brow beaten, torn down and tuck my tail between my legs and start spitting out names that "The masses" accept as gospel in a freakin guessing game like the NFL draft.

If I said it once I said it 1000x80 (snuck in a quick joke=) times. Beauty in this flesh and beef pageant is on the the beholder. Since my own eyes are forming my own independant opinions (not bandwagon hopping like so many...ahem)... my eyes tell me for sure 1000% don't make Ingram the pick our beloved Fins. The combine did more to back that up as I don't give running angry points for grunting and groaning as some of the pundits did with Ingram.

Mayock (whom I think is one of the better evaluators out of them all) was TOTALLY wrong of the UNC DE Quinn as well. He said soooo many times... "I thought he was just going to blow this combine up".

You can't be much of an expert if you change your mind all the time and he knows that. So when Ingram runs a slower than expected 4.62, he says "I don't care...I'll take him!" This helps to protect the guru aura.

How many times has the REAL draft hit and silence fell when all the "PROS" had the draft figured out, only to have a guy like Tyson Alualu go early and blow their minds? He had a good year and was not a bust as so many 1st rounders are.

Sorry if you can't accept that we don't vote the same way on every player.

Cheers,

I think we should make the rb from 20,000 Ton Of Granite University our 1st rd pick. His name is Cant-Block Runner-Catch III. That should make many of you here very happy. LOL...........

THESE DUMB BRITISH ANCHORS AS THE GUY WHO REPLED LARR KING ,JUST ANNOYING AND HE THINKS HE'S IT ,,,SAD ,NO AMERICAN LEFT TO WORK AS ANCHORS .

bill @ 11:20 and 11:21 thanks for the confirmation!

I also believe that that ruling will ahve as much to do with speeding up this CBA BS as much as anything. It would be huge of all these Billionaire owners don't have a stash of $$$ to rely on to wait out players.

Could loom large.

Cheers,

Bill will tell you we're the worst franchise in the league and yet there were 14 teams that finished with a worse record than us this year.

He'll tell you that we have the worst QB in the league, and yet the kid is working hard with the new OC and getting ready to learn a new system. The kid's excited about it but Bill will say he shouldn't even try because he doesn't have it.

It's all doom and gloom from Mr Connors....24/7

ROB,

YOU HAVE A POINT ,I WAS QUICK TO ATTACK YOU BUT I HOPE YOUR BIG HEART WILL FORGIVE ME ...YOU NO MEMBER OF THE GANG .ONLY BILL AND DYING BREED .

Rob... I see you have a lot of passion for football. I see you realize we all have our opinons, points of view, perspective...no way everyone is going to agree. With that being said, I think maybe you are taking certian things a tad too seriously. I could be mistaken, but there seems to be an unnecessary edge to some of your posts, bordering on anger. If I'm wrong, only you would know, I withdraw the comment, otherwise....I get the feeling you might go off the handle a bit for no good reason. It's all just fun, exchange thoughts. Heck the experts, the GM;s and coaches are all wrong even more than us bloggers!

ALOCO F-UUCK YOU DIRTY BIOTCH!!! LOL..........

ALOCO ES DURTY LIOTTLE PEECEE BAOSTURD. LO1.....

For the Ingram haters:

Why does EVERY mock draft out there have Ingram going to us at 15? Why does EVERY mock out there have Ingram as the first running back in the draft?

And yet guys want to say 'Ingram's not a first round back' or 'he's garbage' or 'he's slow'. What makes YOU guys the experts you think you are when the actual experts are saying otherwise.

Craig M,

I would stand behind my Ronnie Brown racing Ingram in a second, injuries and age, extra weight and all.

You have already answered the question. I personally would do whatever to trade back and get better value. EVEN if we can't and I am not a big believer in can't I would say there will be some mighty fine RBs in the 3-4 round range. Some killer blazer types too like like Noel Devine, Derrick Locke, Dion Lewis.

Heck I would take Kendall Hunter OSU, Alex Green from Hawaii or Johnny White of North Carloina with a mid round pick in a second and be fine teaming them with Ronnie Brown resigned to a lesser deal. They ALL ran faster than Ingram.

In that instance Ronnie Brown becomes the new Ricky and comes off the bench to fill in.
