Did Ingram kill himself by running slow? No Did it help? No

The Dolphins are in the market for a running back in the NFL draft.

The Dolphins are also in the market for speed on offense and the NFL draft is expected to deliver that as well.

So it stands to reason if general manager Jeff Ireland can find a running back who is fast, he can meet two needs for the price of one pick. That's the reason Alabama running back Mark Ingram was such a popular guess as the Dolphins first round pick (15th overall) according to many draft gurus with opinions. The marriage just seemed to fit.

And then Ingram ran the 40-yard dash as the NFL Combine on Sunday. And his time was a pedestrian 4.62 in one clocking, which raised some red flags and eyebrows because, well, it's never great news when a smallish back cannot run away from bigger defenders.

So is Ingram, the 2009 Heisman Tropy winner from Alabama, thus eliminated from Miami's list of possible draft day targets?

Former NFL defensive back Corey Chavous, a draft guru in his own right and founder of nfldraftnasty.com, doesn't think so. In fact, Chavous now thinks Ingram has joined some very good company.

"A lot of running backs that are the greatest of all time that haven't had the greatest of 40 times," Chavous said today on my radio show, Armando and the Amigo. "Emmitt Smith ran high 4.5s and low 4.6s. Walter Payton was also 4.5 type guy. And that's kind of what [Ingram] has got to be compared to now if you're saying he's going to be an elite running back. You look at some of the better running backs that have played with that same build and stature that haven't had great 40-yard dash times."

You can listen to the complete Armando and the Amigo interview yourself on the podcast right here. Chavous also discusses the quarterback that most impressed him during the combine.

One thing that Chavous did point out is that Ingram was not supposed to run slow. It was indeed a surprise -- obviously not a pleasant one.

"I was surprised because Ingram ran 10.7 in the 100 meters in high school so him running a 4.6 surprised me," Chavous said. "It seems he got into a stride too early and didn't stay in his explosion phase long enough."

That suggests Ingram can rehabilitate that time when he has a pro day at Alabama or a personal workout for various teams -- including the Dolphins. But even then, the 40-time is not a tolling bell of doom.

I do repeat, it is a red flag. Remember that Ingram spent parts of the 2010 season battling injury concerns. So teams will want to know if the 40 time is an outgrowth of lingering injury issues.

But will it erase him from Miami's radar? Probably not.

My take? I personally believe the Dolphins are in trade down mode already. I believe they want to add a second round pick and the only real way to accomplish that is trade out of No. 15 to lower in the first round and add a low second rounder to boot.

But you obviously need a partner to participate in that scenario. Barring that scenario presenting itself, the Dolphins will obviously still consider Ingram -- although it is hardly a certainty they will take him.

This is better than one of those 1-900 numbers....

ingram isnt the right pick for us. trade down and pick up a 2nd rounder. why this makes u so mad i havent a clue. u want ingram, i want to trade down. neither is right or wrong on this so far

and for the record ive never seen craig write anything on here that has actually happened. he predicted a div winning season thbis year. ripped me in sept and told me how good this offense was. so its hilarious when he tries to bag on others predictions

Hey Armando, Who wrote that headline? I understand it is the editor not the columnist in most cases/ But with the tragic loss of Duane Duerson, how about a little forethought?
Juss saying' that's all.....

Bill,

If you've read any of my posts I've said that I am favouring a trade back, whereby we draft a running back in the second or at worst third round. I like Williams personally but I would be Ok with LeShoure. Ingram at 15 is my fallback. If we can't trade out of the spot, I don't se how you can pass on him.

If never said Henne is good. I've said he's COULD be good with some help and some weapons. Hopefully he gets that this year.

As for wins this year? I don't know yet. I have to wait to see what they do in the draft and free agency.

so now we know also craig has predicted henne will be good, ingram will be a stud, and the fins will make the playoffs. i have said henne will suck, fins will win 5-6 games only. and no way fins take ingram or will he be anything more than a decent nfl rb. remember those fellas cause craig will change them

ALOCO ORPHA WINFRY SAY DONT BREAK TEETH TO CRACK A NUT. PEEL BANANA AND NOT BREAK A NAIL. MARGRETA PARTY ON APE CITY BAMAHAS. HEYNA COWER MAKE FAT ON MR ROSS $100 MILLION. LIPPY THE HERO SAYS JOINS US. PASSPORT FREE.

NEW BLOG UP.....

CRAIG M....YOUR NOT GONNA LIKE IT.....

Bill I NEVER said how good this offence was. I did comment how hard the team was playing after the first two games. How together they played and the effort and focus that was there. NEVER said anything about the offence.

Still waiting for the post that talks about how wrong you were on those predictions Bill.....still waiting...

Exactly.....never going to happen...

kris,

I just saw the headline...LOL.

Hope he doesn't call me out....LOL.

odinseye,

I'm glad you pushed me on this, no worries...I'm actually not huge on Newton either...a salesman as far as I'm concerned. I would just like a bold chance at the right guy, not a "diamond in the rough" situation. I trust certain teams to find later round gems, just not ours. I'm enjoying this drama and hope we get it right.

for all those haters out there .... if ingram is taken in by Miami some of you won't like it and some of you will but if he does not live up to expectations then it was management fault,, right??I really don't understand how you people call yourself Dolpfans !!!! It really pisses me oFF just support your Goddamn team and stop crying and bitching about it....... 'cause at the end of the day WE have no control whatsoever ........... just saying!!

I am calling BS on that fact that Ingram ran a 10.7 100 meters in high school, no way. He ran a 4.62 40 and looked tense and wasn't fluid near the end of it. This isn't a guy that would run that fast... I think Ted Ginn ran a 10.6 or something in HS, do you think they are close to the same speed?

The Fins need to pass on Ingram, he is no upgrade over Ronnie, he is just shiney and new so people think he is going to be great, don't fall for it! He is coming from a powerhouse school that usually dominates, he won't be a star.

Emmitt played for the Cowboys when they were on top with the best line, he is a product of the team, he wouldn't have been half as good somewhere else, the line made him look so good, he is no Dickerson, Sanders, Payton, etc...

I am surprised that is even a question. We should take Ingram and not look back

Ronnie Brown's 40 yard dash was a 4.43 at the combine. Just for comparison. I doubt Ronnie runs like that now though.

Speed does not a running back make...anyone remember the kid that Jimmy Johnson took that was stupid fast ,but, couldn't get out of his own way in the game? I'm drawing a blank on his name (big impact!) ,but, there was a magazine cover that year that showed JJ with his Corvette and this kid saying that JJ coveted fast. Not sayin...just sayin.

ingram could be our first pick under one condition and that is if he is still there in the 20's after we trade down in the first. it is pure suicide to pick him at #15 and wait until the 3rd rd to get another pick. it's been pointed out time and again that backs can be found in other rounds and it is no different this year. ryan williams and mikel leshoure are going to be there in the 2nd rd and either one of them will give us an upgrade at the rb position. we need to hit in the first round with speed at wr and that means either torrey smith or jon baldwin. they may not be the complete answer by themselves but they are key parts to the entire puzzle. add some more pieces and we begin to "build" and offense. that's what we need to concentrate on in the draft; building an offense. pick up pieces of the puzzle so we can begin to get better on that side of the ball. this year's draft will not solve all of the issues we have on either side of the ball but we need to make the right decisions on who we draft and when. there is no margin for error.

you know what i hate about the herald the most, and i guess other newspapers do the same thing... is to put a new headline on the front page or the sports page.... and then when clicked, it turns out to be a three or four day old article...

DM1, our biggest need is a QB, if not you get Ingram! If you get another great RB in a later round, trade Ingram after the CBA. There's a possibility we might do that off the books, unless Henne shoots his mouth off again in the mews media, and pick someone at 15 for another team, like the Eagles for example and then trade him for Kevin Kolb. Just a possibility, but I think Ingram would be another Emmit Smith and might save Henne's butt! Keep Ronnie trade Ricky....and I think, even though I am not a Henne fan, that we can be a contender!

I haven't the time to read the numerous pages here, but if no one here has mentioned Ryan Williams, RB VA Tech (injured last year)..I will.
He has elite speed, elusiveness and was the best back in the ACC 2 years ago. I don't believe he'll last through the 1st round, but if we can get him after a trade down...say 25th pick, I believe he would be excellent value. I normally agree to get a RB later, but this guys speed is just what the DR ordered. A better DeAngelo Hall.

i think the dolphins should trade down from 1. they should trade down from 15 to like 25 and get a 2nd round pick. then with the 25th pick in the draft the dolphins should select the best guard/center in the draft and his name is mr. mike pouncey florida gators. then in the 2nd round we draft a RB. then re-sign ronnie brown. so that way we have ronnie brown and and a drafted RB in the 2nd round. let ricky and cobbs walk in free agency. re-sign lex hillard. because as of right now we have no RB on our team except polite and he is our fullback. so we resign ronnie and hillard and then draft a rb in 2nd round and we go with that get rid of cobbs and ricky and then with our new line which we be awsome with long and carey on the outside and put pouncey anchoring the middle at center and then get 2 guards in free agency and draft 1 also then our o-line will be awsome again.

so the answer is: go 2-14 in 2011 and draft andrew luck as #1 pick. thank you.

mark ingram = sux and overrated!

Gary Stephens,
Jason Allen played at Tennessee (not bama) for Phil Fulmer, bamas most hated coach. Regardless, bama puts out pros. Drafting Ingram or Julio Jones at 15 would both be good picks. Ingram is drawing comparisons to Emmit Smith all over the NFL channel from ex-players. Ronnie and Rickie gotta go. Grab Ingram at 15 and look for a qb later as this is a strong deep qb draft. Anyone who doubts that please remember this post in the years to come. Locker was considered a better prospect than Bradford a year ago and look what Bradford did at STL. Locker is ranked 3,4, or 5 by many on the NFL channel now. The D tackles, dbs, and wrs are going to make up most of the first round, leaving a good qb pick for the dolphins later. Ingram will be a good pick and produce.

I would not be mad at all if we drafted Mark Ingram. If we stay at the 15th pick, we need to add a talent who likely be a big time player. And Ingram i feel has that chance. The forty time is exactly what i expected. I think he can run faster if he worked on it, but his speed is not what makes him great. He is great, because he is great at running in traffic. He is a down hill runner that will keep the chains moving. Beside Igram i feel he is the only legit back in this draft. He can carry the full time load. The rest of the backs are part timers. If not Ingram than i will wait until next year for a true big time back.
