Report: Williams, Brown not very elusive

Earlier this week I wrote this column stating the Dolphins intentions of remaining a run-first team and telling you how intriguing that is, considering the Dolphins don't have any proven starting caliber running backs on the roster.

Yes, the club can always re-sign Ricky Williams or Ronnie Brown or both. But I wrote that I wouldn't count on either being back.

This despite the fact coach Tony Sparano made very clear during his meeting with the media that he had no problems with the way Brown and Williams played last year. He actually said they played well.

Of course, I've reminded you time and again not to get too caught up in what the Dolphins say as much as what they do. If Williams and Brown played so well, how come the club opted not to re-sign either one before the labor agreement fell off the cliff into an abyss of pending legal challenges?

Well, the able folks at ProFootballFocus.com have crunched the numbers and they'll be happy to tell you why neither Williams nor Brown were priorities -- their numbers confirm what your eyes should have been telling you:

Neither Williams nor Brown were very good at gaining yardage on their own last season. Neither was good at breaking tackles or running away from tackles.

ProFootballFocus refers to this as its elusive rating. It measures a back's ability and performance independent of the blocking in front of him. This rating is a great equalizer in that it removes the advantages running backs that play behind great offensive lines have over those who do not.

PFF further states their elusive rating filters out coaching and playcalling, as well as the other 10 guys on the offense.

So where did Brown and Williams rate in 2010?

Bottom 20 of 58 rated backs.

Brown rated No. 48 of 58 with an elusive rating of 20.8. Keep in mind Ladell Betts had the worst elusive rating, according to PFF.com, with a 3.1. LeGarrette Blount led PFF's elusive ratings at 89.8.

Brown, the website said, gained 58.6 percent of his yards after contact or 2.2 yards per carry. That's bottom-third ordinary. Blount gained over 73 percent of his yards after contact and Oakland's Darren McFadden averaged 3.5 yards after contact.

For perspective, understand that Adrian Peterson gained 877 of his 1,298 after contact last season. Brown gained a total of 734 yards.

Ricky Williams fared better. But not much.

He ranked 40th of 58 backs, with an elusive rating of 26.7. He was in the same company with backs such as Willis McGahee and Michael Bush.

Williams averaged 2.5 yards per carry after contact, according to PFF. He had 404 yards after contact for the season -- meaning 60 percent of his yards came after contact.

The stats would suggest that if the Dolphins want to bring back the more effective back from last year, it would be Williams. The problem is no one can predict if Williams, who turns 34 in May, will simply fall of the table with wear because of his age or continue to provide semi-acceptable play.

The elusive rating article doesn't mention Brown or Williams except for one instance but it is interesting.

One more thing: DeAngelo Williams, the back many Dolphins fans are eyeing because he's scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent is not on the 2010 report because he was injured much of the season. Williams had an elusive rating of 42.61 in 2009, which was 15th best in the NFL.

More like it.

Die u dumb phucker

Does Pro Football Focus keep similar tabs on RB in college? I'd like to know the score comparison between Mikel Leshoure and Mark Ingram.

That would be interesting

Who cares what Sparano says? The Phins should be concentrating on getting younger at the running back position. Ronnie, and Pipe are both on the wrong side of the best they have to offer. Running backs closing in on thirty, or passed that number are best used as F.A.G.S(football anaylist guys)Not churning out 3 yard runs, and making fumbles.

We have to get younger just to give us a shot to be more dynamic. Imagine another season with these 2 plow horses? Add the thought of Henne checking down to Lousaka Polite. And wow that is some offense! Now I don't think that Sparano, or the Dolphins really believe that retaining either of these 2 is a good move. The problem is, we have nobody on the roster to play running back. So short of drafting a few rookies, and signing a free agent(when the time comes)What do we do?

You all know that I think Lex Hilliard should be the President. He needs to play a part in this new backfield. If Daboll can turn Peyton Hillis into a 1000 yard rusher, Hilliard can at least come in and caryy the ball 5-7 times a game, and catch a few passes. He can definitley do better then the less the 3.5 ypc that Brown and Pipe gifted us with last year.

But this doesn't solve the problem(I always try and get some Lex propaganda in when I can...sorry) Who is going to be the go to guy, or guys? I would like to see us wait and draft a running back(or 2) until the mid to later part of the draft. Go after a free agent, and let him start. Give the 2 rookies a chance to figure out how to play, and once they are ready get them rolling. Expecting any rookie selected in the later rounds of the draft to start right away is foolish. They too need time to learn the craft, or they would have been first rounders and expected to start now.

Penith Lamb Sausages...that's Ricky and Ronnie

Tony should have been fired

Darryl Dumphy, it is what it is, we all talk to much, except me! YES, we need a new QB and RB, plus others in supporting roles!!! I think this was predicted on the Mayan Calendar as well!!!!

Armando, in case you haven't noticed, our O Line hasn't opened up many holes for the RBs to hit

Armando, in case you haven't noticed, our O Line hasn't opened up many holes for the RBs to hit

Forget about Lex. He was a sixth round pick and they waived him, then brought him back on the practice squad. Only reason he ever had touches was because Ronnie was injured. He is a 3rd string back period. Its time to flush Cobbs and Lex, they wouldn't be starters anywhere period. Time for fresh blood.

Sheets, & Hilliard deserve DECENT SHOT, GB Rb, Texans RB, & TBB RB ar eall proof that soem top notch guy outta college is not teh definite answer. AFter close evaluation I have come to a relization as to why teh doplins hav estruggled for some time now . You may be surprised to hear wht I beleive is a legitimate reason but it is a glaring one to me when compared with teh otehr teams in the NFL. Ready ??????????? We lack adequate "eyeballs" Basically our talent scouting is horrible. How is it that GB, TBB, Texans, Lions, raiders, ((wont even mention pats) can get guys in teh late rrounds that pruce & we get guys early that fail & 4get late rounders. In recent years the biggest steal is probably Wake, Bell, > who makes these calls? PaT white, Ginn, jason Allen, even Ronnie Brown wasnt the best RB on his team that year it was Cadillac & we had teh #2 pick

Soprano pretty much said I dont give an f, gonna pound the ball this year. He is so dumb, we have a small line, bad QB's and no proven running backs. I heard someone say this year will be a disaster and I think Nolan will be HC by week 9. Henne wont get it done and Marshall wil freak out and demand a trade. The only positive point is Mini Soprano at QC may turn out to be worth the 100K Ross pays him. But he is only like 25 so that will not end well. At least the Marlins have some hope w the new stadium next year. I am ashamed to wear m Phins jersey and I dont see that changing in the next year.

Ronnie Brown is an all-pro that has had one down year. It'd be a huge mistake letting him go.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYckF_YF4oE&feature=fvst

yup, we need 2 rb rookies whatever, we need to keep ronnie at the very least to mentor them if not to show that last season was a one off crap one, remember any time ronnie or ricky looked like they were on the cusp of a hot performance they got pulled for the other one

but he could do with an incentive based contract and ronnie himself maybe happy to walk

ts's comments about "his nature" should be music to any rb who wants the ball

armando's making a good point here, but the point is if there's decent blocking the rb doesn't have to be so elusive to make yards, ronnie's style last season was to run expecting the block, if it's not there he runs into a tackle early

Ronnie and Ricky show is cooked. I am a fan of both. Reality is that the team needed them to break more tackles. It forces teams to react to them. But opposing defenses could stay in their lanes because they knew they could stop these straight ahead bulldozers. And the Wild Cat sucked this year because of the lack of lateral speed.
Where was Minnesota before AP? I don't even remember that they had a back. And that right there tells you what a game breaking back can do. If anything a great back takes pressure off of your qb and oline. A great back opens holes.

This article would be more appealing with less I. There is no I in t-e-a-m. Less "I told you" such and such. Just report the facts and stay out of the story.
Other than that, this was a new stat I hadn't heard of before, so in that way it was useful.

I can't think of an upcoming season that I have been more down on our prospects. And yes, it just feels embarrassing to be a Fin fan now. And not because of our record the last two years. Because of dismal decisions on and off the field that time and time again just make you scratch your head. So now the team is gonna hang both Ronnie and Ricky out to dry, and probably as unceremoniously as JT and Zach, who if money and popularity is your end-all as an owner...that's where your bread was always buttered. About Ricky's opinions, I think most fans knew, he is just a consumate nice guy as a person and was just a little more courageous than others to speak the truth...such as saying Sparano's approach to micro-manage turned counter-productive. I think Mando's article adds to the debate about keeping either back (and yes I too wish he'd just report in the third person, not the third... but the guy just loves to sing his own praises...), but tell me this. What's the likelihood you will have anyone better on the roster than either Ronnie or Ricky come September? At perhaps even more to the point, what's the likelihood that either or both will play much better for another team. To me, not breaking more tackles upfront is a lot harder than after you've hit a hole full speed, and it doesn't play into every backs strengths...otherwise every team would be looking for the next "Fridge" (remember him?). My take, a constantly piss-poor way to manage players and their egos and create team unity continually has our best players under-performing. And yes, obvious, doing the dual R and R show...why the heck did you not try to favor whoever had the hot hand? What would that have done to the stats? Again, just so many head-scratchers... Somebody, anyone, please, save me from this agony of being a Dolphin supporter...

Excuse the typos...

"AND perhaps even more to the point"

and

"DURING the dual R and R show"

Typing too fast...

DyingBreed is a mafia boss, priceless .ha

Ricky is probably finished here unless we draft Ingram. Then they would ask him back for one more year.
They say we need speed huh well why did we trade Lorenzo Booker?? That kid was going to be good if he got his chance. Any ways if Miami takes any other back in the draft I am sure they will give Ronnie a incentive laced contract for two years.

I just don't want to see Ronnie go to New England and run for 1300 and be there work back. He is the type of player spygate master likes.
So in short Ronnie had bad year comes back but not as starter. If anyone deserves a chance on this team Ronnie should get it.
Remember the ravens game?? Was running all over that defense and had 1 carry in the second half. How's he supposed to fix that???
Any way. What do you guys think??

I don't know how they do their calculation as far as th line in front of the backs but our line sucked last year iy would not surprise me to see Ricky and Ronnie go somewhere else and have a big year, they both are solid backs. Our coaching has not been very good and the decisions about personel especially on the o line have not been good the line 2 years ago was pretty good we were something like 4th in rushing and for some reason we got rid of most of the starters on the line from thtat year and now we just cannot seem to move anybody.

THEONLY THING WRONG WITH THAT REPORT GOES BACK TO THE COACH.

RICKY AND RONNIE ARE MASHERS THEY BOTH NEED THE BALL ALOT TO START GETTING IN THIER GROVES.

THEY're WORK HORSES AND IF YOU DON'T RIDE THEM IT DOESN'T WORK.

RICKY AND RONNIE I'M STILL WAITING FOR BOBBY AND MIKE. OK I GOTTA COOL IT DOWN.

ANYWHO.

THIER BEST SEASONS AS FINS CAME WHEN THE OTHER WASN'T IN THE PICTURE.

Tony should have been fired

Nuff Said

My Mock draft 2011

Trade back to late 1st rd and pick up a late 2nd rd pick

1st RD RB Mark Ingram
2nd RD C Steve Wiseniewski
3rd RD OG WIS Moffitt
4th RD TE DJ Williams
5th RD Best ILB Available
6th RD RB UM Berry
7th RD BPA

I'M NOT SURE SOMETIMES IT'S JUST AS SIMPLE AS THE COACH.

THE COACH SAID HIT THE A GAP.

THE RUNNER SEE A DEFENDER THERE SO HE SIDE STEPS TO THE B GAP. HE GETS 45 YARDS BUT GETS YELLED AT FOR NOT HITTING THAT A GAP.

SOME PEOPLE JUST WANT TO BE IN CONTROL OVER EVERY LITTLE ASPECT OF THE GAME.

I THINK WE PLAY WITH NO REACTION.

IF YOU'RE GOING TO DO A 10 AND IN BUT THE SAFETIES SITTING ON IT WHY NOT CUT IT UP OVER THE TOP OF THE SAFETY.

OUR TEAM WOULD KEEP GOING ACROSS THAT MIDDLE THE BALL WILL GET PICKED OFF. CHAD'S FAULT NO

BESS HARTLINE OR MARSHALL GETS CREAMED.

NO YARDS AFTER THE CATCH.

BK

YOUR MOCK DRAFT SUCKS.

I MIGHT HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE FEW WHO WASN'T MAD AT ROSS FOR LOOKING FOR A COACH THIS YEAR.

I WAS HOPING THAT HE GOT ONE.

Armando? Interesting article. I did not know they recorded these kind of stats.

Here is my questions. Ronnie was asked to run in between tackles more, obviously because he does not have the same speed. Our O-line was terribly inconsistant at creating any kind of hole due to shuffeling and injuries last year.

Ricky would be the outside the tackles guy, and it seemed that most of his yards came from the wildcat outside runs where the D banked on oniie running through the tackles.

Wouldn't this skew those numbers to exactly what we are looking at? Ricky was more dependant on the mistakes of the line backers going after ronnie and the receivers blocking, which our receivers were average at.

Ronnie is dependant on the tackles and they were awful last year.

If this is possibly a factor, i think it just points that both players were equal for the most part...

either way, the O-line and play calling need to get better and more creative even if we had d'angelo here...

you needed pff to tell you that. genius. anyway here's mine bk:

rd 1 torrey smith
rd 2 ryan williams
rd 3 greg little
rd 4 bruce miller
rd 5 dion lewis
rd 6 ryan bartholemew
rd 7 johnny white
rd 7 jt thomas

in my mock you have the speed receiver who is the deep threat in torrey smith, williams who runs with speed and power and is "elusive", greg little - a receiver with great hands who is a bull to bring down, bruce miller as their right side pass rusher, dion lewis - "quick as a hickup", ryan bartholomew - the bull for center, johnny white - hard runner and great hands; can catch ball on third down out of backfield and jt thomas who will excel on special teams.

bp,
brown has only had one year where he rushed for over 1000 yds. when you consider his production it isn't exactly what you would want for a high first rd draft pick.

dm1, wake up dude. we have no 2nd round pick and getting a second in a trade down is highly unlikely from our 15 position.

Justin,

The many that were mad at Ross for persuing another coach were mad because he failed, not because he tried.

If you'll remember, he couldn't convince any of coaches he sought to sign on.

Which leads me to believe we'll have problems convincing the better FA players to sign when the CBA is contracted.

VY will not sign here. Neither would Kolb, Palmer, and a bunch of others.

Hell, you might even see a draft pick hold out, kicking and screaming, "Oh, hellll no!"

DB, Fin4Life,

I was reading through the last blog saw that I was impostered last night.....

The last post from me was the one about how Gabbert is now the 2ND COMMING.....when he wasn't even in the conversation in late January.....

DB....proir to that I stated that you take both sides of the argument.....I stand behind tat statement....but I also gave you props for for having alot of football knowledge...so it all evens out....

However DB....I didn't call you ugly or insult you in any way....that is childish....and there is only one poster on here who constantly uses the word ugly....along with brown, and donkey's....i'm sure you know where I am goin with this....

Odin....from a few blogs back....the MAIN reason I didn't keep it goin with GulfDolphin was because he was tossing the "B" word around right off the bat....I have no desire to defend myself from someone who (at least that day) had little to no reasoning skills....seriously....typing a curse word to somebody....where do we go from there?

In any case...like I stated to GulfDolphin....I have agreed with many things he has written on here...that just wasn't one of them....I was surprised by his reaction.....(i imagined he was one of the more reasonable and intelligent poster's on here) but it just goes to show you that you never really KNOW anybody on here.

Regardless of what your impessions and opinion's might be....

Armando,

Good job on crunching the #'s......but i didn't need a stat to tell me they STUNK.....

What I do need to be told however, is did they stink because the line stunk....or did they stink because the game has passed them by.....

I'm not sure....its like the chen and the egg thing.....

I just hope Sparano and Ireland get it fixed....

CRAYO:

WE TRADED DOWN LAST YEAR.

chen=chicken

kris,
so joan chen's name translates to joan chicken. cool.

Dm1dophan....

Who's Joan Chen.....

Kris,

You were the one that jumped my post, and I merely defended my opinion. You were the one that told me to grow up.

And if you are so sensitive that you need to abbreviate the word "bitching" with a "B", then you need to get out of that dress, and into some dungerees.

Ps, Nobody impostered you last night. You would have reposted soon after that an imposter was speaking in your place. This is your weak ass attempt to try and weasel out of your own words.

How pathetic can one be...

kris,
she's an actress. boy do i feel old.

IT DOSENT MATTER IF WE TRADE UP OR DOWN.

JEFF'S JUST GOING TO GET IT WRONG.

LONG WAS THE WRONG PICK.

VONTAE WAS A GREAT PICK FOR THAT SPOT. I JUST WISH HE COULD CATCH.

TRADING BACK LAST YEAR WHEN WE COULD HAVE HAD DEZ BRYANT INSTEAD OF THIS BACK UP ODRICK

kris is the one who posts as many posters in here and blame aloca .

Kyle Rudolph TE. I just got a feeling that this is the guy Tony is going after.

Last years 12 was far more desirable than this years 15. There were many high in demand picks there. 15 this year is a different story. Who is going to be there that is so good you'd give up a second for? If a player falls out of the top 10 to 15 that is so good we'd be foolish not to take him. Lets get better, not worse (on behalf of the GHS).

Gulf Dolphin....

Disagreeing with you isn't JUMPING your post...what are you 5 years old and and think the world revloves around you.....seriously....is no one allowed to diagree with you.....

Clarly its not worth the headache of disagreeing with you...but you are serious emotional issues.....your therapist must love you.....

2nd....why would I stand behind one statement and not another....does that make any sense to you....it woudn't to a reasonable person.....

Unlike you....i actually care about what I put out there and do it in a respectful manner....sometimes it is straight forward and direct....but most times not disrespectful..

But I will ask you.....do you know me?

Was that your wife I Effed the other day.....you sure seem to have a hard on for me....lets see if I weasel out of that.....

and dez bryant was injured during training camp and during the season. who's to say he isn't going to be one of those guys who sits more, because of injuries, than playing.

GULFDOLPHIN:

I AGREE 100%.

I HATE THE WAY SPARANO COACH.

HE SEEMS TO HAVE NO FEEL FOR THE WAY THE GAME IS GOING.

Dm1Dophan....

I'm gonna goolge her.....

and age is a badge of honor.....at least thats what

A lot of ink has been spilled by writers chroniclling the epic incomptence of the Dolphins to land a starting calibre QB in the post-Marino world.

Relatively less has been written about their inability to land a high-quality RB over a much longer period of time.

REMEMBER: Lamar Gordon -- (perhaps the most Wannstedtian personnel move not named 'Eddie More)

REMEMBER: Brining in Lawrence Phillips or draftinc Cecil Collins (if arrests for B&E, Battery and Sexual Assault were TD's -- two sure fire hall-of-famers).

REMEMBER: Ricky walking the earth barefoot, smoking weed (or whatever the hell it was he did during his retirement/suspension/petulent self-induglent stage)

So many embarassments at the RB positon in such a relatively short period of time.

Sure, there were moments when we seemed to have -- at the very least -- a stopgap solution (Karim-Abdul Jabbar had his moments in the mid 1990's, and Ronnie Brown's pre-injury 2007 and Wildcat leading 2008 were encouraging signs).

But the fact is that the last time Miami had a backfield that you feared -- it included guys named "Larry", "Mercury" and "Jim".

Those days are well over 30 years behind us. So sad.

DM 1 DOPHAN:

AND ODRICK DID WHAT AGAIN.

AT LEAST DEZ HAS PLAYED IN A NFL GAME.

MY POINT IS A YEAR LATER AND WE STILL NEED

ANOTHER WIDEOUT AND WE STILL NEED A RETURNER.

Gary Stevens, Ricky in the early part of this decade was as dominant a RB as I've seen - then again, I'm too young to assess Kiick/Csonka/Morris.

Do we have a QB yet? better have one at least in the organization by the end of April and he better not eb a 2nd round pick!!

MR. GARY STEVENS

REMEMBER RICKY LEAD THE NFL WITH 1,800 WHILE HE SMOKED WEED.

SO THAT TELLS ME HE'S WAS A BETTER RUNNER HIGH THAN EVERY BACK SOBER.

Gary, The Fins had Delvin Williams in the 80s, Though if Iam not wrong they got him from San Fran, So never mind your right, The Mighty air breathers have not drafted a great runner for decades........

Dm1Dophan....

Just googled Joan Chen.....she is very beautiful.....Not sure if I saw the most recent pics....but the ones i saw she looed very nice....also read ker wiki page.....interesting....

THE ONE THING ARMANDO DIDN'T MENTION IS THIS:

ALOT OF TIMES WIDEOUTS MAKE QUATERBACKS LOOK BETTER.

A QUARTEBACK CAN'T MAKE A WIDEOUT LOOK BETTER.

ARMANDO SAID LOOK AT THE QBs THAT ONE THE LAST FEW SUPERBOWLS.

I WILL DO ONE BETTER.

LOOK AT THE WIDEOUTS ON THOSE TEAMS.

GREG JENNINGS AND DONALD DRIVER,
HINES WARD AND SANTONIO HOLMS
PLEXICO AND STEVE SMITH
MOSS AND WELKER

NOT ONLY ARE THEY ALL GOOD PLAYERS BUT WE CAN REMEMBER A GREAT CATCH OR PLAY THEY MADE IN A SUPERBOWL.

SORRY TO TELL YOU BUT HARTLINE AND BESS DON'T RUN BY ANYBODY.

YEAH THEY GET OPEN AND MAKE THE CATCH BUT THEN WHAT.

You know who's great at drafting RBs is Indy,Marshall Faulk,Our Homebot from the "U" James, and even Joesph Addai is'nt to shabby...

it can be a little hard to run the ball with
9 defenders in the box,
you have to back them up, we need the deep threat, and i'm not hinting at a fast reciever.
we have no accuracy deep. thats a big problem,

not to mention, have you ever seen any QB as bad at selling the play action ?

many, many of these problems will be fixed when we say goodbye to the robot

for the dolphins to move forward ,we need henne traded .

Guy's lets take a look at what the fins got, #1, No feature RB signed(Even ronnie and ricky did'nt make any defense shudder), #2, Chad(Fat neck)Henne,(See # 1),A Off. coach that satistically was worse then Dan(Dead since 1964)Henning,#3, A head coach that Loves the FG,#4 The worst red zone offense that the Mighty airbreathers have had since the start of the Dolphins#5 Jeff Ireland(Enough said), So what Iam getting at is I'll be happy with 4 wins this season......JMHO..
