Report: Williams, Brown not very elusive

Earlier this week I wrote this column stating the Dolphins intentions of remaining a run-first team and telling you how intriguing that is, considering the Dolphins don't have any proven starting caliber running backs on the roster.

Yes, the club can always re-sign Ricky Williams or Ronnie Brown or both. But I wrote that I wouldn't count on either being back.

This despite the fact coach Tony Sparano made very clear during his meeting with the media that he had no problems with the way Brown and Williams played last year. He actually said they played well.

Of course, I've reminded you time and again not to get too caught up in what the Dolphins say as much as what they do. If Williams and Brown played so well, how come the club opted not to re-sign either one before the labor agreement fell off the cliff into an abyss of pending legal challenges?

Well, the able folks at ProFootballFocus.com have crunched the numbers and they'll be happy to tell you why neither Williams nor Brown were priorities -- their numbers confirm what your eyes should have been telling you:

Neither Williams nor Brown were very good at gaining yardage on their own last season. Neither was good at breaking tackles or running away from tackles.

ProFootballFocus refers to this as its elusive rating. It measures a back's ability and performance independent of the blocking in front of him. This rating is a great equalizer in that it removes the advantages running backs that play behind great offensive lines have over those who do not.

PFF further states their elusive rating filters out coaching and playcalling, as well as the other 10 guys on the offense.

So where did Brown and Williams rate in 2010?

Bottom 20 of 58 rated backs.

Brown rated No. 48 of 58 with an elusive rating of 20.8. Keep in mind Ladell Betts had the worst elusive rating, according to PFF.com, with a 3.1. LeGarrette Blount led PFF's elusive ratings at 89.8.

Brown, the website said, gained 58.6 percent of his yards after contact or 2.2 yards per carry. That's bottom-third ordinary. Blount gained over 73 percent of his yards after contact and Oakland's Darren McFadden averaged 3.5 yards after contact.

For perspective, understand that Adrian Peterson gained 877 of his 1,298 after contact last season. Brown gained a total of 734 yards.

Ricky Williams fared better. But not much.

He ranked 40th of 58 backs, with an elusive rating of 26.7. He was in the same company with backs such as Willis McGahee and Michael Bush.

Williams averaged 2.5 yards per carry after contact, according to PFF. He had 404 yards after contact for the season -- meaning 60 percent of his yards came after contact.

The stats would suggest that if the Dolphins want to bring back the more effective back from last year, it would be Williams. The problem is no one can predict if Williams, who turns 34 in May, will simply fall of the table with wear because of his age or continue to provide semi-acceptable play.

The elusive rating article doesn't mention Brown or Williams except for one instance but it is interesting.

One more thing: DeAngelo Williams, the back many Dolphins fans are eyeing because he's scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent is not on the 2010 report because he was injured much of the season. Williams had an elusive rating of 42.61 in 2009, which was 15th best in the NFL.

More like it.

dying breed is a pharmacist who gives flue shots to the elder .

why is it that so many people say that we need to get a franchise quarterback in the first round and you can't keep taking quarterbacks in the 2nd round because they don't work out but they would be willing to trade for kolb who was a 2nd rd pick in the same draft as john beck?

Aloco...if your gonna continue to imposter me (8:01 AM)...your gonna have to do it in BLUE.....just like old times......

Fool me once.....you know the rest.....

pat white, john beck and chad henne were just poor selections by our braintrust as were many other early picks. kevin kolb is highly thought of and probably the best available option at this point. he's had a few years to adjust to the pro game. i dont see a true franchise qb in this years class and no one that would be ready by sept if there's a season.

kolb has a total of 19 gms of nfl experience in the four years he's been in the league. he's thrown a total of 319 passes in that time and has 11 td's and 14 int's for his CAREER. last year he had 7 td's and 7 int's and almost 1200 yds passing in 7 gms. before he was benched in favor of vick.
so, how is that an upgrade from where we are now? i would rather stay with henne than give up a first rd pick for this guy. with the guys that are coming out this year i would be happy with someone like mallet, ponder or kaepernick in the 2nd round. but, only in the 2nd rd.

@dm1
Because Kolb has shown that he can play in the NFL. He has like 10 - 300 yard games already , he is young and could be the next super star QB.
Didn't he get drafted like 2 picks before John Beck! So he is ready to lead a team. This kid is my vote for who we should get. Your telling me if Kolb was in the NFL draft this year at 15. We wouldn't take him? Then why not just trade our first this year or next year for this kid.
Yes I understand that Phily is a west coast offense but kolb still has an arm no matter what style we play and he has never had a WR like Marshall !
Look just do it, this isn't the AJ Feeley again.

Henne is German for jeffe

greg,
kolb only has 2,082 yds passing in four years. he had one 300 yd game last year and two in 2009. henne had (3) 300 yd games in 2010. he also had 3 in 2009. he threw for more yds and more td's last year than kolb has thrown for in his four year career with the eagles.

If the question is Kolb or Henne.......I'll stick with Henne.....

Guys a big NO to going out and getting Kevin Kolb. Philly does a great job of getting value back for guys on their team. Amazing that they were able to get a second (did they also get a 4th?) for McNabb last year. Everyone criticized them for trading McNabb within the division but the reality is they knew exactly what they were doing. Andy Reid and company will eat our guys for dinner. If they are trading Kevin Kolb there's a reason. To be honest, the kid's nothing to date that makes me think he's a first round pick. Forget it and build around Henne for another year.

Craig M...agree with you 1000%.....

It's pretty obvious what we have to do guys. We NEED to have a good draft and then we NEED to do it again next year. It's not rocket science....it's right in front of our noses. The teams that had success last year are the teams that had impct from their draft choices. Take a look at what Tampa and Kansas City did. they hit on every one of their draft choices and got impact from all their new guys, including Freeman from the year before. Detroit's reason for turning things around? Look at the impact that Suh and Best had. What did we get from our rookies last year? Nothing from Odrick and Edds. Contributions from Misi, Carroll and a little bit from Jones. It's not enough.

No to going out and drafting a first round quarterback, who won't play next year and we're not even sure if any of these guys will be any good. Go get some guys that will be impact guys and if that includes Ingram then so be it. I'd still like to see the tradeback option but if not go and get someone like Ingram.

i second that emotion

By the time we reached game 13 last year we went out and got McQuistan from Footlocker and immediately made him a starter.
A week later we signed Mickey Shuler away from Walmart and made him a starter also.
If Belichek did that to Brady he'd be fired and probably hospitalized.

Great!!!!! As the rest of the NFL gears up for the new passing style offense we will once again be slow dinosaurs plodding along averaging 15 pts per game........boy this team makes me want to have my tattoo removed!!!!

Darn Craig...now you lost me......

You make excellent points on drafting....and the importance of drafting well.....but to use KC as an example....for me doesn't work.....My CAN'T MISS PREDICTION for 2012 (if theres football)....KC turns back into a pumpkin and the Chargers return to dominance over the division.....KC reminds me of the 2008 Dolphins...THE PERFECT STORM......

I'm not even going to tpuch the QB thing...to early in the morning....

And for all the guys that keep harping that 'we should have drafted Bryant' and 'our guys are idiots for passing on Bryant', can we just wait a couple of years on this guy before we annoint him. Great talent, no question but this guy has already had issues this offseason and there's an awful lot of talk that this guy is going to be a headcase off the field. Deon Sanders has already turned his back on this guy. You guys want to rip Ireland for picking Odrick last year and having him miss games. Bryant was hurt a lot last year too, so fair's fair. Like Odrick, I think we have to wait a couple of years to find out what Bryant becomes.

Maybe, just maybe Ireland isn't as stupid as the majority of the guys on here like to make out he is. Maybe, just maybe he knew what he was doing avoiding Bryant. God knows he'll never receive credit from anyone on here for possibly doing the right thing.

Take a chill pill MM.
When Indy drafted Manning they started the new era of offense in the NFL: Build the offense around the strengths of the QB.
NE did that w Brady, Pittsburgh did it with Roethlisberger, B'more w Flacco etc.
Now 13 years later we are doing it. That is why all of the previous offensive coaches were fired and Daboll was brought in.
Henne's skill set was enough for him to break all of Brady's Michigan passing records and all of Brees's Big 10 passing records. The previous offense did not match his skill set, this new one will.

kris,

The Chiefs had 51 games started by rookies last year (only the Pats had more with 57). Look at the guys that they drafted lasy year. Eric Berry, Dexter McCluster, Tony Moeaki, Kendrick Lewis and Javier Arenas running back kicks. On top of that Asamoah made contributions and is seen as a future starter.

You may be right, KC may slide back this season but they made great strides last year and had a very solid draft. Another one this year and look out. Think they'll be rolling the dice on a guy like Newton or Mallett this year? Not a chance!!

Craig M....I was hammering and yammering for DEZ BRYANT...and would dtill love to have him on this team.....as of late he has done some bonehead things.....but often supreme talent doesn't equal supreme intelligence.....and DEZ is proving that once again....

but when he gets on the feild....nobody will care what happened in March....

BTW....didn't this regime draft Philip Merling....the PREGNAT WOMAN BEATER......just asking....

I'm not bringing that up to put you down or say Ireland can't draft ( look at the C0wboys)....he knows talent.....

My point is...these things happen...

kris,

Merling was cleared of those charges. They were dropped. So careful about what you're throwing out about guys.

No question that Bryant is an on field talent but the guy may be a total headcase. We don't know that yet. Keep in mind he may not be just like Randy Moss on the field, he may be like Randy Moss off the field too. Several teams now couldn't wait to get rid of Moss and I thin he'll be lucky to get a job this year, largely because I think his skills have diminished. A reminder, nobdy has ever won a thing with Randy Moss on the their team. I'm just saying, like Odrick, let's let this play out a couple more years before we write the story on this guy.

I think you put too much credibility in the elusive part running game and backs-you just need RBs that can provide the thought of a threat, pick up blitzes, and catch the outlet.
Our problem is the QB and the deep passing game.
GB won a SB with no RB, the Pats won SB with cast-off RBs. We try to spend #1 picks on RB and not QBs - we need to stop doing it in reverse order.

What would you guys give up for Sam Bradford?
A lot?
HENNE BRADFORD
2010 Games 15 16
2010 Yards 3300 3500
2010 Cmp % 61 60
2010 Yds/Att 6.7 6.0
2010 Rate 75 76
2010 Wins 7 7

Da doooFinzz are a garbage team with NO TALENT, why even write about em?
This team won't break 500 for at least a decade.
They have no second round pick and they hired a buncha clowns to coach thier team.
Meanwhile New Haven Papa apaganose is grinnin all the way to the bank. "i gocha money Ross" whatcha gonna do naaa?"

Andy Reid is the MASTER of making payer moves in the NFL. He says of Kolb, 'he's a player who can win a championship'. Really? So why can't he get off the bench in Philly? Must be because of all the championships they have won over the last few years...LOL. If he was that good, they wouldn't be looking to trade him. Bottom line on this guy....he's just another guy. There is ZERO proof you can win a championship with this guy. They drafted him in the second and they will likely get a first for him before he walks as a FA. That's getting value for a player, who quite frankly still has question marks about him.

Reid's taking advantage of a need out there for a starting quarterback. He'ss going to play him up and very likely get his first round pick. Good for Andy!

Stay away from this guy Ireland....he'll eat you for dinner!!

Good points guys.keep up the good work .

PriceMaster,

I've had that same argument on here. Evryone has already annointed Bradford as the 'next' QB, as a 'franchise' QB and they are ready to run Henne out of town. Makes ZERO sense to me.

Not elusive? Gee wha happen to the might wildcat?
The awfulensive line that's what. A buncha popwarner players blockin for an old man and a beatup slow rb.
Da doofinz haven't drafted a tailback, they've been busy (7) useless linebackers an oardick and a patridge in a pair tree. Thier defense was suppose to be good but they were blownout at the end of the year. I guess smoke and mirrors don't fool everybody.

I'm out for awhile guys....enjoy the day!!

Price Master,

just love your post @ 10;02 AM .

Craig M....let me clairify myself....If you go back and read the blogs when the news about Merling came out....I believe I was on of very FEW...that defended him...and stated he was guilty of nothing until he was convicted in court......

I'm sure somebody can go back and re-post those comments.....

but to my point....you are doing the EXACT same thing with bryant....he hasn't even been arrested...but you are on here telling us of his character issues....at least with Merling we had pictures of a guy in cuffs.....

I'd like to know what Chris Johnson's elusive rating was being that he's a speed back. How is that accounted for?

Craig M....these were my thoughts when Armando posted a blog about Merlings troubles....
------------------------------------------------------
This clearly is a hanging blog.

Have you guys ever heard of innocent until proven guilty. Not on this blog I guess.

For all of the people out there who obviously have little or no control over thier own lives/jobs. In the real worl you don't just cut somebody just because. We did a bad enough job with Porter. Why let something go for nothing.

Finnally, I don't condone places your heands on anybody. Especially women. But lets keep work and personal buisness seperate. Merling like the rest of us are entitled to mistakes. Nobody is dead or raped. So lets take it down a notch till we find out what the real deal is.

-------------------------------------------------------
That was my stance then.....and its still my stance now....spelling errors and all......lol......

Same applies to Dez Bryant and Joe Public.....

I know I have done enough stuped stuff in my life time to either be jailed or dead.....

So I won't be castting any stones at any one ele's alleged transgressions......

We should trade into the top 10 and draft Chad Henne. With the 4th rd pick take Ted Ginn because it cost us our 3rd pick to trade up and get Chad Henne.

Then with the 3th rd pick take Anthony Fasano because he's the bpa of the 5th rd. In the 6th rd take Gerbril Wilson, this guy really tore up the combine workouts this year.

In the 7th rd take Patrick Turner. He's hands down the bpa of this rd. After this draft lets all make super bowl reservations folk! LOL.............

I'm a lifelong, dedicated Dolfan. However, this year, for the first time, I'm routing for the Dolfans to lose = what's best for the team - Sparano must go! Ireland must go!! I'm offended that Jeff Ireland is GM of my team. I'm embarrassed everytime Sparano opens his mouth. Not Rex Ryan-type embarrassment, at least there are surprise and fun elements to that. It's sad what's going on in the NFL right now, and it's devastating what's happening to this once proud franchise.

Dolphan in waiting,

Fans that root against the Dolphins are called "Jetfans". Youre on the wrong blog you goof! LOL..................

I love drafting late rd offensive line. I know that very soon I can get thier autographs in between flipping burgers at McDonalds! LOL...........

Hey guys,

Meet me at the Ted Ginn/Chad Henne Hall of Fame ceromonies!

Late rd drafted olineman Donald Thomas is the greatest olineman ever CUT by the Dolphins! LOL.................

LETS JUST KEEP DRAFTING AND CUTTING THOSE LATE RD OFFENSIVE LINEMEN. WOOHOO!!! LOL.............

or meet me at wal-mart parking lot where i sell hot dogs .

LETS JUST DRAFT ANOTHER BUSBOY TO PLAY NEXT TO JAKE LONG! WOOHOO! LOL..................

I Hate the Jets - just can't stand watching Sparano anymore. Maybe I was a little rash saying I'm routing for Dolphins to lose - let's say, that I'm going to take a break.

RESIGN RONNIE BROWN AS PART OF THE GOVERNMENTAL OBAMA HEALTHCARE PACKAGE! WOOHOO! LOL...................

RONNIE BROWN LOVES OBAMA CARE! LOL............

A PAPER THIN WILTING WEED BLOWING IN THE WIND HAS A GREATER CHANCE OF STAYING HEALTHY THAN RONNIE BROWN. RESIGN BROWN FOR OBAMA HEALTHCARE! LOL.....................

THE IR(INJURED RESERVE) SHOULD BE CHANGED TO THE RB(RONNIE BROWN) LIST. ALL INJURED NFL PLAYERS WILL NOW GO ON THE RB LIST! LOL............

RONNIE BROWN'S CLAIM TO NFL FAME WILL BE HAVING THE INJURED RESERVE LIST RENAMED AFTER HIM. IT WILL NOW BE KNOWN AS THE RB LIST! LOL............

RONNIE BROWN WAS CHIEF LOBBYIST FOR OBAMA-CARE. HE KNOWS HE'LL BE THE CHIEF BENEFACTOR FROM IT.

SOON OBAMA-CARE WILL BE RENAMED RB-CARE! LOL........

the eagles traded mcnabb and decided on kolb as their starter with vick backing him up. when kolb was injured vick seized the opportunity and performed convincingly to become the starter. kolb wants and opportunity to start in the nfl and the eagles want a round#1 pick. he's better than anyone we can draft and a significant upgrade to henne who has regressed over 3 years. kolb can be a franchise qb.

RESIGNING RONNIE BROWN IS A STRONG VOTE FOR OBAMA-CARE! FREE HEALTH-CARE FOR ALL, RONNIE BROWN GETS IT EVERY OTHER SEASON! LOL............

CRAIG M:

GUESS YOU WERE TALKING TO ME. BECAUSE I'M THE BIGGEST DEZ FAN.

I NEVER HEARD ANYONE SAY DEZ WAS THE NEXT BIG THING.

HOWEVER WE NEEDED AND STILL NEED A WIDEOUT AND HE WAS THE BEST ONE IN THE DRAFT.

WE NEEDED AND STILL NEED A RETURN MAN AND HE WAS THE BEST ONE IN THE DRAFT.

YOU'RE RIGHT HE DID MISS SOME GAMES BUT I BET YOU CAN YOU TUBE SOME HIGHLIGHTS WHILE HE WAS A ROOKIE.

WE DIDN'T NEED A DE LAST YEAR AND ODRICK NEVER PLAYED A 3-4 DE ANYWAY.

SO HE GETS HURT BECAUSE SOMEONE SNEEZED ON HIM.

DEZ BRYANT PLAYED WIDEOUT AND HE WAS THE RETURN MAN YOU GET MORE VALUE FOR TELLING HIM TO GO DO WHAT HE ALWAYS DID.

I CAN'T SEE HOW YOU CAN TRULY THINK IT'S BETTER TO GET SOMEONE WE DIDN'T NEED TO DO SOMETHING HE NEVER DONE OVER PERHAPS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE DRAFT.

DB, didn't you know that most teams only have 1 first round pick each year? It would be wonderful if only we could have 7 1st round picks each year but it doesn't quite work that way. When you have a great need in one position only, then its easy to decide where to pick at #1, but when you have multiple needs, it makes the decision a bit more challenging.

We haven't drafted a great RB, or QB in the later rounds for decades now (or got one from FA!), so one could just as easily argue its silly to pick one of them outside of the 1st round or FA. One could make a better argument we need to change who's doing the picking!

P.S

WHAT KIND OF TROUBLE DID DEZ GET INTO BECAUSE THIS IS NEWS TO ME.

GREG Z,

In his only ever opportunity to start, Kolb lost his job to Vick. The Eagles drafted him 2nd rd, youre suggesting we give up a 1st rd'er for him.

I dont know if youre aware of it, but you're suggesting a qb that lost his one and only opportunity to become a starter. Is now worth a 1st(ours) and 2nd rd(Eagles) pick. Pleaqse tell me it aint so! LOL............

0x80

I THINK WE MADE SOME GREAT DRAFT PICKS I THINK WE NEED A TRUE HEAD COACH.

kris,

I have a big problem with anyone who hurts women or children. They're weak and their scum. No excuse for any of that stuff. If someone has a problem, then recognize it and get help. With that being said, Merling's appears to be an isolated incident and he was never charged. I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt THIS TIME.

However, as far as Bryant is concerned there were questions about this guy's character before he was even drafted. Guys ripped Ireland for him asking Bryant is his Mom was a prostitute. There's a REASON why he asked that question...obviously he had heard stuff and he wanted to find out what impact it had on Bryany. Perhaps it wasn't a very nice question and perhaps Ireland went to far but I'll never fault someone I support for doing their due diligence. Bryant wants to be paid millions of dollars, deal with it!! Can't handle it, get a job at McDonalds.

What I'm saying about Bryant, kris, is where there's smoke there's fire. It's the same thing with Mallett. You and others want to turn a blind eye to this stuff but in reality it's Ireland and others who are going to commit millions to these guys for the next several years. When these things don't work out it's you and others who are the first to rip Ireland for making mistakes. Pat White was a mistake. Maybe just maybe he's not passionate enough abot football and prepared to do what it takes to get to the next level. Same goes for Jamarcus Russell. Hell of a talent, but all the reports on this guy were that he wasn't a student of the game, wasn't a gym rat and didn't put the extra time in. Maybe just maybe if more diligence was done they would have found that out about the guy.

So I guess what I'm saying is with guys like Bryant and Mallett, you have to ask yourself, 'Is this a guy you can win a chmapionship with?', cause it's more than just the physical talents. People like to refer to a player having 'IT'. What 'IT' really is is does a guy have IT. Is he committed to being the best. Peyton Manning has IT, not just because he has great physical talents but because he's a great student of the game and has a will to get better. Physical talents aren't enough to get it done and that's why I don't want a guy like Mallett. Yes he looks to have it physically, but there's too much 'dirt' around him. That will become magnified when he comes into the NFL and is put under the microscope and everything he does is scrutinized by the fans and the media.

That's my thoughts kris. Don't take any of it as personal attack and sorry if it came across preachy. I feel strongly about it and feel free to disagree. It's what makes it a better world.

Cheers!!....

0x80,

I have no idea wth youre talking about. Youre making a statement to me I never posted anything about. Again, WTH are you talking about? LOL.............
